Buddie Royalty AU… kinda

Idea: instead of a presidency, America has a monarchy, and Helena and Ramon Diaz have just stepped down as king and queen following King Ramon’s heart attack. Eddie reluctantly takes the throne at his parents’ behest, though they seem to be constantly hovering over his shoulders, waiting for him to mess up. Unfortunately, they’ve also talked him into this silly… competition? No, everyone was calling it The Choosing.

Eddie was to pick from the women candidates ages 25-35 his new wife and new mother of his son Christopher. Each candidate was to bring just one friend or family member along for support during the following weeks when he would choose the best woman for the job.

Just barely securing a spot through her parents’ signing her up against her will… Maddie Buckley, three years’ widowed after she killed her abusive ex in self-defense. Contractually obligated to see it through, Maddie chooses Buck as her person.

The thing is: Maddie doesn’t want to win.

The thing is: Eddie doesn’t want a woman.

The thing is: Buck loves kids and maybe really likes this one’s dad.

The thing is: Prince Christopher loves his new friend Bucky.

Enter Eddie and Buck falling in love at perhaps the worst time, Chris making a new best friend, political schemers trying to end the Diaz dynasty, Isabel Diaz trying to help her son and grandson find true happiness, Ramon and Helena being a pain per usual, and Head-Advisor-to-the-Throne Athena Grant-Nash being utterly fed up with everyone’s bullshit.

Some story beats:

- Chim is the on-staff head emergency medic. Once he, Maddie, and Buck meet, he sneaks them into some of the more restricted sections like the library or staff gym

- Buck meets Chris in the library after Christopher ditches his new tutor (Mrs. Flores?). They become quick friends, but, since Chris has been kept almost entirely out of the public eye, Buck doesn’t know who Chris is for a while

- Buck and Eddie meet by accident in the palace. They try to stay away from each other for very obvious reasons but are drawn to each other like magnets and form a clandestine relationship with a fast-approaching deadline

- Helena and Ramon are trying to lead The Choosing so Eddie will pick an appropriate woman to be his queen, like lovely Miss Marisol

- Eddie throws out most of his old advising team and restaffs with people he trusts, promoting Athena to Head Advisor since he knows she isn’t under his parents’ thumb and is damn good at her job

- Eddie hates the throne and Chris does too, but he doesn’t see a way out until Chris is accidentally poisoned when the political dissenters were trying to kill Eddie. Buck catches it quick enough from his firefighting work and ensures Chris gets an epipen in time

- Eddie decides it’s the final straw and he’s choosing this family he’s made with Buck once and for all, so he calls a press conference after talking with Athena and announces her as regent in his place

- Eddie steps down with Chris and goes to live with Buck as civilians. Maybe he takes on a dispatch role to support Buck without anyone seeing his face. Chris goes to real school and thrives socially. Buck proposes only a few months later :)

I HATE PPL SAYING EDDIES GONNA MOVE BACK TO TEXAS, I HATE IT. My man JUST had a plot about experiencing joy, why the fuck would he punish himself by moving back to texas, if he moves, thats his whole found family torn away from him.

Eddie moving back to texas to be with chris means he has NO support system, no friends, just his son and his parents, eddies roots arent there anymore its be like trying to put a tree in sandy soil. Yeah that tree grew up in hot climate and sandy soil, but then the tree got the right type of soil, a proper watering schedule, and is now FLOURISHING why would you take it out of its new pot to put it back in its old one? The old one that stunted its growth and suffocated it?Just because it grew there doesnt mean it THRIVED

Eddie moved away from his parents for a reason, and putting himself back in that position of being critisized for every parenting move, of being told hes not good enough, that hell drag chris down with him, and this time he wont be able to leave. I think the only good part about that would be chris seeing how shitty hus grandparents treat his dad

Also you thunk buck is letting eddie go anywhere? Buck? Mr. Abandonment issues galore? He MIGHT let eddie go to texas to get chris and bring him home without him. But move there? Permanently? Not a chance.

Im sorry but having no support system whatsoever, and tyen being forced to live in the place he left for a reason, with parents who dont act like they love him and a son hes convinced hates him does not sound like the recipe for a postive mental mindset, or having and experiencing joy. It sounds like a place depression and self-doubt can thrive, and no one there on his side seems like a way to get yourself a trip to grippy sock prison.

Im getting so passionate about it because this is a popular theory, and imo it seems like smth the show could do, which is what has me so scared. But to me, it makes no sense character wise. Let chris come HOME

Helena and Ramon both acting like they know Chris best, like they know what's best for him, but not only consistently treating him like he's still a little kid that can't do things himself, also guilting him into agreeing with them on their decisions and opinions. Contrasted with Eddie respecting Chris's boundaries, his decisions, and his independence, and actually treating him like the teenager he is by actually communicating with him instead of talking at him. The way he so clearly learned from his parents' mistakes and decided he wouldn't be like them, because he knows how it felt to have them as parents. And how he got Chris out of their house the second he realized they really were doing the same things to Chris they were doing to him. Just. Something about breaking cycles of abuse and generational trauma and the way you either learn to not be or become your parents. And Eddie chose not to be like them because he loves Chris so much and can finally see that he deserved better too, that he couldn't let Chris go through that. Because that's his kid.

“Oh my god Edmundo, is that a fucking engagement ring?” Adriana yelps, grabbing his hand.

“No fucking way, he would have told us,” Sophia hisses, leaning across the table. “Right, Eddie?”

“Um. Surprise?” Eddie offers with a grin as his parents enter the cafe. They stop at the counter, giving Sophia and Adriana a few more minutes to interrogate. He hadn’t wanted them to have to keep anything from their parents, as much as he’d wanted to call them straight away (because who wouldn’t want to brag about Buck wanting to marry them?).

The one where Eddie comes out to his parents and it goes about as well as he thought it would. Supportive Diaz sisters, confronting the Diaz parents, and Buck being...well, Buck. Plus, Buck finally gets the chance to do the proposal he planned.

I want Eddie to finally be able to yell his heart's content at his parents. I want him to finally reach a boiling point and take them apart with the kind of wet rage when you're crying for yourself but the anger outweighs it so you shout, scream with tears rolling down your cheeks.

I want him to feel exhausted and heavy but also lighter by the huge boulder he had been carrying for most of his life.

And I want Helena to see that. I want her to see it and decide to take advantage of that to strike back because she is horrible and I don't want to see her earning any kind of redemption. She knew damn well how much all of this shitshow hurt Eddie.

But I also want Ramon to snap. Not at Eddie. I want him to see that his wife — who swore up and down that this was best for everyone, who convinced him about this whole thing even when he wasn't so sure — as she retorts with twisted half-truths, willing to kick their own son when he's clearly on the ground already. Eager even.

And I want him to take Eddie's side. Because he had character development. And I don't want that to go down the drain. And I want Eddie to have at least one parent who, although nowhere near perfect, at least tries to be decent.
