The Exeter Puzzle Jug, made in Saintonge, western France in the 14th century, found in Exeter, United Kingdom.

The Exeter Puzzle Jug is a 14th century jug found in Exeter, England but originating in France. The jug pokes fun at the clergy with two naked bishops (denoted by their crosiers) in a tower while ladies below dance to the sound of the musicians below.

Puzzle jugs are so named for their design, when tipped in a particular way they pour but if someone attempts to use them normally without thinking they will instead spill the liquid onto them due to holes placed strategically. Despite the name, the Exeter Puzzle Jug would function normally with the liquid going from the top, through the hollow handle and into the bottom where it could be poured with no issue.

I was fortunate to attend RAMM's August exhibition Gatekeepers to Heaven. Alongside several phenomenal illuminated manuscripts the exhibition also had the Puzzle Jug on full display, allowing visitors to see it from all angles. It's on permanent display but if you ever get the chance it's great to appreciate from various viewpoints, as it's such a strange thing (and likely larger than you may think from the photos). Seeing it in context with the other pottery found in Exeter, much of it travelling from mainland Europe also paints a great picture of how much trade was happening. Saintongue is famous for it's exports of pottery during the medieval era with multiple museums having examples from this time. I'll be keeping an eye out to see if I can find any more the next time I find myself looking at pottery shards.
