Procedural Generation in Concept Art: A New Frontier

Procedural generation is rapidly advancing as a critical technique in concept art, particularly within the gaming and film industries. This method leverages algorithms to automatically create complex environments and assets, significantly enhancing both creativity and efficiency in production.

In the paper PCGPT: Procedural Content Generation via Transformers, Mohaghegh et al. (2023) discuss the integration of transformer models and reinforcement learning into procedural content generation (PCG). These advancements allow for the creation of content that can adapt in real-time based on user interactions, marking a significant leap earlier static models. Such innovations are particularly valuable in open-world games and interactive films, where dynamic environments are crucial to the user experience. Although these ideas are very technical and difficult for me to wrap my mind around, being a concept artist, they are still an important aspect of what is happening at the forefront of our industry today, and since more and more 3D software is used by concept artists, these concepts and innovations in procedural generative technology is relevant for me to look into.

Similarly, in Procedural Content Generation via Generative Artificial Intelligence, Mao et al. (2024) explore how generative AI is being utilized to enhance procedural generation processes. The authors highlight the role of AI-driven algorithms in creating everything from detailed textures to entire game levels autonomously, showcasing the potential for these technologies to push the boundaries of creativity in concept art. Games like Minecraft and No Man's Sky are prime examples of how PCG can create expansive, unique worlds that offer endless exploration opportunities. With the new compatibilities of generative AI, this can be taken to a whole new level.

This is all useful to my own project because I frequently use procedural generation tools such as Houdini in my work, or substance painter with it's procedural texturing workflows. Thus it is a good idea to see what is at the forefront of these technologies in 2024.

WEEK 12 & 13 - TYING EVERYTHING TOGETHER

Week 12 & 13 were busy busy busy!

Once I had completed the prototype, I moved on to constructing the presentation. I gathered the video from Mim & the desk research from Ramezan as well as revisiting our stakeholder info & chosen SDGs – changing our second focus goal to ‘goal 13: climate action’ as it aligned with our prototype goals better (United nations, 2022)

I also worked on a more in depth and revised customer journey map & created a map of our ‘design thinking’ journey on illustrator so we could talk about it in each stage of the presentation.

Just before the presentation day, I realised that we did not have any promotional material apart from our promo video – due to this, I started to create promotional posters, social media posts and mock-ups to use in our final submission.

Take action now - Syrian Kurd under threat of execution in Iran

Kamal Hassan Ramezan Soulo, a Syrian Kurd arbitrarily detained in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, has been at risk of arbitrary execution for three years because ministry of intelligence officials refuse to acknowledge his real identity and instead are torturing and otherwise ill-treating him to make false “confessions” that he took part in an armed attack. 

Ministry of intelligence officials have falsely claimed that Kamal Hassan Ramezan Soulo is the same person as another individual, “Kamal Soor”, who was sentenced to death in his absence in November 2011 in connection with a July 2006 armed attack, which the Iranian authorities have attributed to the Party for Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), a Kurdish opposition group in Iran. However, Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Urumieh ruled twice, in September 2017 and again in June 2020, that he was not “Kamal Soor”.  

Over the past three years, the authorities have repeatedly subjected him to incommunicado detention and torture and other ill-treatment, including kicking, punching and beating with cables, in order to extract “confessions.”

They continue to seek his execution by claiming that he is a different man, despite two court rulings dismissing the claims. He must be released immediately.

Take action now - write a letter, email or Tweet the authorities in Iran to call for the immediate release of Kamal Hassan Ramezan Soulo, as he is being detained based on unlawful and intentionally false claims made by the ministry of intelligence about his identity.

WEEK 8 & 9: WELCOME BACK

Even though we stayed in contact during the mid-semester break, we unfortunately could not meet up to discuss the next stages of our prototype, this meant that we needed to spring into action when we finally met back up in week 9.

We discussed how we were going to tackle A2 and I added a few new documents to our google drive. This helped us all to easily contribute to the final project, each sharing our own ideas about the different elements of the assignment.

When reflecting on A1, I recognised that the workload was very skewed (with Ky and I doing most of the work) so we decided to delegate clearer roles for A2, ensuring that the workload would be split more evenly.

These roles were:

Ramezan – Desk research / statistics

Mim – Promo Video

Ky – Video voice over, video script & survey.

Chloe (me!) – Create the prototype, help with the survey & put together the final presentation.

Ky and I created a survey aimed at 12–25-year-olds to get their opinion on museums & find out how they would react to our proposed prototype. As a designer, it is important to include primary research when trying to solve a wicked problem. Esposito argues that primary research is the “most important method in design research” as it allows a designer to “validate their ideas with the actual end user” gaining direct user feedback (Esposito, 2018). Due to this, we aimed to get as much research as possible directly from our target audience, we shared the survey with family, friends and on the university discord.
