just throwing it out in a post that i miss y'all. i miss ffiv and the little nook we have here for that fanbase and i wish life would slow down just a little so that i could envelop myself in that game and its community again... it's so fun and so rewarding. i apologize for my absence as of late, but know i'm alive at the very least and do intend to come back... sometime. when i can.

I've been thinking of aapi heritage month and ppl posting culture stuff... it feels kind of disingenuous for me because the culture I grew up with and the culture I want to, um, post about and represent are so different. Well... I know there's danger in clinging to past forms of culture and searching for that legitimacy, but I also want to find a sort of Hui and Manchu culture that feels authentic, to understand it even if it's as a sort of outsider. The parts of my life (naval gazing now) that were influenced by it are impossible to unthread from the general Chinese Canadian experience, maybe it's 50% general Chinese Canadian, 40% Hui and 10% Manchu (mainly through racialization), but I feel such a distance from Chineseness. Perhaps it's spitefully so due to conflicts with those spaces. It's all in my head, but what is nationality (ethnic) but a mindset? My families are actually Very Hui and Very Manchu, but being raised in Canada ironically immersed me more in Han Chinese culture: surrounded by Han Chinese Canadians instead of a growing up in a closed Muslim village or Manchu autonomous region. I'm sure my life is better this way but somehow.... I'm a little sad.

Hi your workshop quiz made me feel a lot of things. Question 18 especially. I love to make things, but they aren't useful, and they aren't art, so I don't know why I keep doing it. I think because I hope they're beautiful?

if you want my take i don't think that things have to be useful or be art to be created... value appears in a lot of different ways and both the capitalist approach of monetary/labor value and the artist's view of value in emotional and artistic significance are shortsighted when it comes to that. something doesn't have to be good or fun or beautiful or useful to be worth it to you in some way or another. if you love to make things than the making is the value all on its own. what makes something art is arbitrary. what makes something useful is arbitrary. and when it comes to creating things i personally think the fact that it came from you is a kind of value of its own <3

3am portal 3 idea

i genuinely want more post-portal 2 content...don't blame me i'm just a sucker for exploration game especially because half-life 2 (and the other half-life installments) prove me that valve is capable of expanding their lore in a beautiful and cohesive manner.

i want a half-life-esque game where we play as chell, outside of aperture. remember the companion cube? what if it's also a storage cube, and there's a prototype portal gun in there, and ground up moon rocks, packed into a small bag? now chell has to be smart with the proto-portal gun, not only will there be less surface to conduct the portals on, but these very limited surfaces are unstable & have a time limit so you need to be quick. you can use the conversion gel but since they come in small amount you need to know how to budget them. there's also need of coordination on your part as the portal gun will be vital in defeating the abnormal creatures blocking your way. shooting range is now limited and you can no longer shoot portals up on the moon, or far away for convenient travel. no.

along your travel you'll meet survivors, learn how to survive (basic survival game stuff like foraging for food, getting water, medicine etc) (remember chell is 50k years into the future).

oh and maybe wheatley comes back at some point who knows, but he is barely functional except be a good way to provide a little bit of electricity and maybe radio. but how bout glados? well here is the fun part. you can communicate with her through wheatley's radio, but to do so you will need to recharge him. black mesa is/was rich, right? what if chell discovers one of their smaller outpost? so that's how you can get some of the needed supplies, and even teleport to another locations! remember, half-life 2 is about teleportation.

then maybe that's how chell will get teleported to xen— ok i'm very tired now i wanna go to sleep

So I read something the other night, a short piece that investigated Kain's experiences with having his mind invaded and controlled. That in itself was fascinating and I highly suggest the fic. However, what I was most interested in was the epilogue.

In the epilogue, Kain and Cecil bear witness to the hatching of a wyvern, marking the resurgence of wyverns and dragoons in Gaia (was Gaia ever canonically called anything? Did I make that up?? The entire world that ffiv took place in???). I don't have much of anything to say about it right now given I'm up to my ears in finals, but I'm throwing this out there now as both a reminder to myself to yap about this later and to encourage others to give it a read. My gears are turning-- I want Kain to speak with and ride atop wyverns.
