In this video, he subtly goes on about how Undead Nightmare is all a bad dream for John, and that that's why all the people he respects are relatively immortal. except his family, but i think that could be viewed as John feeling like he can never protect them.

Usually I hate the "oooohh, it was all a dreaaaam!!!!" trope, but i think it works with Undead Nightmare. It's obviously non-canon and simply silly and camp, and everything in the DLC somewhat perfectly represents John's beliefs. I'll ramble about that eventually.

But! Anyway! The "immortal people John respects" thing, is especially obvious with Ricketts, i think. He's an old man! (Affectionately), and I'm fairly sure he canonically dies in the two years between John's death and us playing as Jack. He was close to death anyways! And yet, he's immortal and fucking badass in Undead Nightmare. He lights dynamite with a cigarette and is living out his days exploding the undead in Casa Madrugada. All the other survivors are up on roofs or hiding out in their homes, and yet, Ricketts is out in the open and completely safe and fine.

I guess because John wouldn't be able to handle seeing someone he looked up to as a child die in his weird nightmares. Thank god Dutch didn't come back to life.

Watching a playthrough of ffii again and relearning that the dragoons had the ability to speak the language of wyverns... and despite there being a distinct lack of wyverns in ffiv, i can't help but wonder if kain was too young to remember learning wyvern tongue from his father or any of the other dragoons. in my mind, it's generational, latent knowledge, only emerging at the proper time.

I've been thinking of aapi heritage month and ppl posting culture stuff... it feels kind of disingenuous for me because the culture I grew up with and the culture I want to, um, post about and represent are so different. Well... I know there's danger in clinging to past forms of culture and searching for that legitimacy, but I also want to find a sort of Hui and Manchu culture that feels authentic, to understand it even if it's as a sort of outsider. The parts of my life (naval gazing now) that were influenced by it are impossible to unthread from the general Chinese Canadian experience, maybe it's 50% general Chinese Canadian, 40% Hui and 10% Manchu (mainly through racialization), but I feel such a distance from Chineseness. Perhaps it's spitefully so due to conflicts with those spaces. It's all in my head, but what is nationality (ethnic) but a mindset? My families are actually Very Hui and Very Manchu, but being raised in Canada ironically immersed me more in Han Chinese culture: surrounded by Han Chinese Canadians instead of a growing up in a closed Muslim village or Manchu autonomous region. I'm sure my life is better this way but somehow.... I'm a little sad.

3am portal 3 idea

i genuinely want more post-portal 2 content...don't blame me i'm just a sucker for exploration game especially because half-life 2 (and the other half-life installments) prove me that valve is capable of expanding their lore in a beautiful and cohesive manner.

i want a half-life-esque game where we play as chell, outside of aperture. remember the companion cube? what if it's also a storage cube, and there's a prototype portal gun in there, and ground up moon rocks, packed into a small bag? now chell has to be smart with the proto-portal gun, not only will there be less surface to conduct the portals on, but these very limited surfaces are unstable & have a time limit so you need to be quick. you can use the conversion gel but since they come in small amount you need to know how to budget them. there's also need of coordination on your part as the portal gun will be vital in defeating the abnormal creatures blocking your way. shooting range is now limited and you can no longer shoot portals up on the moon, or far away for convenient travel. no.

along your travel you'll meet survivors, learn how to survive (basic survival game stuff like foraging for food, getting water, medicine etc) (remember chell is 50k years into the future).

oh and maybe wheatley comes back at some point who knows, but he is barely functional except be a good way to provide a little bit of electricity and maybe radio. but how bout glados? well here is the fun part. you can communicate with her through wheatley's radio, but to do so you will need to recharge him. black mesa is/was rich, right? what if chell discovers one of their smaller outpost? so that's how you can get some of the needed supplies, and even teleport to another locations! remember, half-life 2 is about teleportation.

then maybe that's how chell will get teleported to xen— ok i'm very tired now i wanna go to sleep
