PM Khan urges nation to wear masks, get vaccinated as dangers of fourth wave loom
Tumblr media
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday urged the masses to strictly observe the government's mandated COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) on the occasion of Eid ul Adha to keep the virus at bay.
PM Imran Khan warned the nation about the dangers of the Delta variant — which first emerged in India — and said that India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Indonesia are currently suffering because of it.
"Given the current situation in countries like Afghanistan, where there is an acute shortage of oxygen, I would like to say a few things to the nation," the PM said.
He said that so far, Allah has been very merciful towards Pakistan and even foreign publications like The Economist has listed Pakistan as one of the top three nations that were able to control the pandemic in an efficient way.
PM lauds masses for cooperating with government He lauded the government, particularly the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) for carrying out research and taking timely decisions to contain the virus from spreading.
He said that Pakistan was the only Muslim country that kept mosques open for two consecutive Ramazans — thanks to the efforts, monitoring, and preemptive measures of the NCOC as well as the cooperative attitude of the nation.
"It was also because of the cooperation of the Pakistani nation that the government could save the country from getting into a catastrophic situation [like other countries]," the premier said.
The premier said that at present, however, the coronavirus cases in the country are suddenly rising again after plummeting because of the arrival of the Delta variant in the country.
"Even though I know that people are fed up of following the SOPs across the world and I understand that, I would again like to appeal to the masses to [at least] wear a mask at all times so that the country could be saved from the possible fourth wave of the pandemic."
He explained that masks should be worn at all times whenever someone is in a confined space with other people — including wedding functions, restaurants, and rooms — because the chances of the virus spreading within indoor environments are extremely high.
"If someone is out in the open, for example in a park, they can take their masks off, but when they are inside a bus or a car with other people, for instance, they must wear a mask," the premier explained while holding a mask in his hands.
"It's a very easy job to wear a mask, and this simple step can save the country and our economy from disaster," he continued.
"I would, therefore, ask Pakistanis to mandatorily wear masks and observe precautions, especially during the occasion of Eid ul Adha," he said.
"The government exerted a lot of pressure on people to adhere to the SOPs and I appreciate the nation for bearing with us, but if you want to avoid further lockdowns and restrictions, then continue to wear a mask," he said.
Towards the end of his speech, the premier also urged people to get vaccinated. He added that even though Pakistan does not manufacture the anti-coronavirus vaccine on its own and the vaccination drive is not as quick as it is in the US, for instance, people should take advantage of the available vaccines in the country and get themselves inoculated as soon as possible.

“Purani Jeans Aur Guitar Mohalle Ki Vo Chhat Aur Mere Yaar”
This is a song from Pakistani pop singer Ali Haider. Whenever I hear to this song, I remember my childhood days in my quaint town. It was so in that town. My early days were spent through 80s and 90s. So much was happening in India those days. But as we know that a child is innocent and so were we. In our town, people from all communities used to live. There were Hindus and there were Muslims. In the present scenario, the talks about Hindus and Muslims always tend to get acerbic. I don’t know why, but it is so.
Today Eid al-Fitr festivities will kick-off in India. Yes, that is why I am writing this. Sitting quietly at my present home which is miles away from the place I spent my childhood, I started getting nostalgic about the days I spent at my home town. Those were the days of wonder. Like as we said “Mohalle Ki Vo Chhat Aur Mere Yaar.” There used to unparalleled jubilation when we used to celebrate the days of Ramazan and eventually Eid al-Fitr.
There was a reason for a connection between all of us. We know that we are a cricket-crazy nation. And we were not away from the game from cricket. There was a field nearby to my home. The boys from all communities used to gather at that place and play cricket. We all were passionate about the game irrespective of our religions, be it Hindus or Muslims. We had built a good rapport between all of us. I remember the games used to be played with all heart.
I must say we were away from the political dimensions of the country. One of my Hindu friend, whom I can also call as one of my best friend as I spent most of my childhood with him, was also a big time cricket enthusiast. He had his own kit which included bats, pads, gloves and helmets. He was an ardent Imran Khan fan. His love for Imran was so intense that he painted his pads in green. Those were the days when Imran had lifted the World Cup in Australia. Their kit in that tournament considered to be their best till date.
The bond that we shared irrespective of our religion was really amazing. We are all humans and we are bound to feel attachment when we spend our time together. At my school as well, I relished Sevaiyan from the tiffin of my friends whenever they brought it a day after the festival of Eid al-Fitr. I must that say that those days as well there were a trench between both the communities. But we as kids were oblivion. We just enjoyed our company. The days of wonder as I said.
As we grew bigger, we visited each others’ homes. We visited each other on occasions like birthdays, marriages, Holi, Diwali and Eid al-Fitr. I have very fond memories of the days of Ramzan. My friends used to call me to their homes for Iftaar. We used to go there. The hospitality that we received at their houses were out of world. We were served with many delicacies. I used to wonder how much effort it would have taken for them to prepare all those things. Moreover, they served us lovingly.
Sometimes we used to go to the terraces of their homes and sit for hours chatting all the things about this world. Eid al-Fitr was a big celebration. We used to visit homes of each of our friends celebrating the festival. We had to eat at all the homes. What a lovely days. I am missing that this year as I am away from my home town. As I write, I get more and more nostalgic. I am also wondering why there is a divide between the communities and why the differences are a fodder for many people. Why is it so? We all can live in harmony. Yes!!
Eid Mubarak!!

Eid-ul-Fitr amid Covid-19 crisis: What countries have announced so far - world news
Tumblr media
The Islamic holy month of Ramadan is nearing an end amid the coronavirus crisis. Scores of countries, including India, are under lockdown to curb the rising incidence of Covid-19 infections. Last month, during the commencement of Ramadan, governments across the globe and Islamic leaders had urged the Muslim community to offer prayers from home and not to congregate amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Mosques bore a deserted look in the absence of devotees owing to the global outbreak of coronavirus. With Eid-ul-Fitr celebration just around the corner, Islamic leaders have urged people to stay indoors and avoid large gatherings on the occasion of Eid. Also read: Timing, date of Eid and impact of coronavirusEarlier this week, Darul Uloom Deoband, India’s leading Islamic seminary, issued a fatwa urging Muslims to offer their Eid prayers at home instead of congregating at mosques. The fatwa said the Eid namaz can be offered in the same manner that the Friday prayers are now being read at home. The Muslim Council of Britain also issued a similar directive asking people to celebrate Eid virtually keeping the prevailing coronavirus situation in mind.Islamic and Gulf nations like Saudia Arabia have extended lockdown for the period of Eid holidays keeping the rising number of coronavirus cases in view.Egypt has said it will bring forward the start of its curfew by four hours to 5 pm and halt public transport from May 24 for six days during the Eid holiday.Shops, restaurants, parks and beaches will be closed for the extended holiday at the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Restrictions on citizens’ movements will remain in place for at least two weeks afterwards, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Sunday.Saudi Arabia too has introduced a nationwide 24-hour curfew during the Eid holidays amid the coronavirus crisis. The curfew will apply from May 23 to May 27.In Jordan, there will be restrictions of movement of vehicles on the first day of Eid. The curfew will now begin at 8 pm, instead of 10 pm, and will last till 6 am. On Monday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said a four-day lockdown, starting May 23, would be imposed nationwide, to prevent the spread of coronavirus during the Eid holidays. The month of Ramazan is the holiest of the year as per the Islamic tradition and lasts for around 28 to 30 days depending on the sighting of the moon. The month-long fasting or Sawm (fasting from dawn till dusk) is one of the five pillars of Islam and is observed by Muslims across the world during Ramadan. The day starts with partaking a meal at the crack of dawn and ends by breaking the fast after sunset and saying the evening prayer Magrib. The month-long phase of fasting culminates into the day of feasting after the moon is sighted and Eid is celebrated to round off the holy month. This year Ramadan began on April 23 and shall continue till May 23. This year, Eid is likely to be celebrated on May 24, depending on the date when the moon is sighted.(With inputs from Reuters) Read the full article

The Hindu woman who has been fasting in Ramazan for the past 34 years
A Hindu woman in Ahmedabad, India, has been observing fasts during Ramzan for the past 34 years. Pooriben Leuwa, 85, says that she and her Muslim friends ‘share a faith called love’.
She began fasting during the holy month after making a vow to a saint in Ahmedabad’s Jamalpur area, Bala Pir Bawa. After her husband’s death, she and her daughters moved some 2.5km from their old Tajpur Mominwad neighbourhood in Jamalpur. But her fasting tradition carries on unbroken.
“For the past two years, I have not been keeping well,” Pooriben said. “My family and my doctor have allowed me just three fasts this year – 27th, 28th and 29th. But I argue with them every day to allow me to observe the entire 30 days.”
She said her family had been involved in a property dispute with her brother-in-law in 1982. “I had vowed at the Bala Pir Bawa dargah that if I win the legal battle I would observe rozas,” she said. “We won the civil case in a year and I kept my vow.”
Pooriben’s bond with her old neighbours was forged in terrifying circumstances.
“During the 1969 riots, our Muslim neighbours formed a human shield to protect my family against riotous mobs,” she said. “I had six girls and each of them was kept safe by our Muslim friends. My husband and I and our children were given food by our Muslim neighbours for more than a month during the curfew.” In her new neighbourhood, Saujanyawas in Danilimda, she is often referred to as ‘Pooriben khala’.
“Mominwad families send kheer-sevaiyan for our entire society when Pooriben breaks her fast,” said Pooriben’s daughter Sarla Leuwa, 58. She said that Firdousben, Sugra aapa and Shireenben or their families from Mominwad still visit them.
Pooriben’s eldest daughter, Manjula Leuwa, said: “We remember as children that our parents never stopped us from taking part in Muharram observances.” Manjula said her family helped their Muslim neighbours handle guests during Eid. “We also got our Eid presents,” she said.

Originally published on Ramadan delicacies from around the world written by Zahra Hassan on Zahra Hassan
The holy month of Ramazan or Ramadhan has just started. It is the the 9th month of the Muslim Lunar calendar and it considered as the holiest and blessed of all the Islamic months. The distinguishing characteristic of this month is that Muslims all over the world are observing fasts during the holy month. From the Dawn till twilight they abstain from eating or drinking anything. Ramadan delicacies are what they break the fast with.
When after the whole day of fasting they break the fast, this occasion is known as iftaar and is kind of a celebration throughout the month. It is the time the whole family sits together and break the fast. Naturally after the day long fast one craves for something nice to eat. Therefore there are a number of special foods that are specially made during the holy month of Ramadan to make the people observing fast feel energized and contented.
In this article we discuss the Ramadan delicacies that are enjoyed throughout the world.  The Ramadan delicacies are the foods that are specially enjoyed in Ramadan every year.
Dates and dishes made with dates
It is considered customary to break the fast with dates because the Holy Prophet used to do it. dates are Arabian Ramadan delicacies. Date delight, dates with cream, dates with nuts, dates milkshake, dates halwa are some of the wonderful delicacies of Ramadan. Dates are known to give quick energy to the body. They would strengthen the body and take it out of starvation mode. One must take a date or two at the time of breaking fast as well as before the fast. In Saudi Arabia having dates with yogurt is a tradition that most families follow every day of Ramadan.
Yogurt drinks
As this year the Ramadan is coming in the summer season so there is more emphasis on the cool food and drink items. The yogurt drink or Lassi as it is commonly called is a mixture of milk yogurt and lots of ice. It is supposed to be served chilled. Combining the coolness of the yogurt with ice makes it an excellent coolant and would make the person fasting energized quickly.
Rooh Afza
Rooh Afza is a traditional Ramadan drink. It is a bright red syrup made from natural herbs and sugar. It has a high sugar content so people prefer it at the time of iftaar so that instant energy is penetrated to each and every part of the body. Rooh Afza is basically manufactured in the regions of Pakistan and India but it is exported to all the parts of the world. Especially the Muslim world as a champion of Ramadan delicacies.
Pakore
Pakore is another one of top Ramadan delicacies. These are small bite sized deep fried gram flour bites. While making pakoras the gram flour is mixed with onions, potatoes, lettuce leaves and a lot of spices. Then the mixture is taken spoonful and deep fried into delicious spicy balls called the pakore. Fettoush
Another hot favorite among the Ramadan Delicacies in the middle Eastern region especially the United Arab Emirates. This is a nutritious salad that is a full meal actually. Harira or Haleem
Harira as it is popularly called in the African and Middle Eastern region and known as Haleem in areas like Pakistan and India, it is a very rich stew made from a combination of various lentils. Rice, oats and wheat are also added to it. Also it has meat and all these items are cooked in low flames for hours so that the taste is fully soaked in every bite full. If you are a vegan you can ignore adding the meat, it is still full of nutrition because of lentils and oats.  Couscous
It is again a dish that originated in the North Africa but it is highly popular because of its unique taste and is popularly found in other parts of the world too. It is a dish that has grounded semolina as its main ingredient. It is served with fish, shrimp even pieces of chicken or meat cut over in small pieces. It is succulent because a lot of tomato sauce is also added to the fish.
Ramadan Kebabi
If you are lucky enough to spend the month of Ramadan in the beautiful city of Turkey, you will be treated to a number of Ramadan delicacies and among then Ramadan Kebabi tops the list of Ramadan delicacies. It is again a very healthy dish and people will love it if they try it. There is a lot of yogurt as well as tomatoes in the dish and there is mincemeat also that can chicken, mutton or beef. It is very juicy as there is yogurt and tomatoes both in the dish. You can enjoy the dish by dipping the pita bread in it or Naan.
