Ramadan is a great time to pick up a book by a Muslim author. If you're on Twitter and/or Instagram, a few hashtags to watch for are #ramadanreads, #ramadanreadathon, and #muslimshelfspace. I'm including a video about the origin of #muslimshelfspace. That hashtag was instrumental in helping me find, read, and share titles by Muslim authors back in 2017.

If you would like to read books by Muslim authors during Ramadan or anytime this year, here are a few we'd recommend.

This is really enjoyable and I highly recommend listening to it on audio. It's a great insight into the Muslim faith if, like me, that's not something you're very familiar with. Once Ramadan began, the Quran reciting race start! Growing up, all I was concerned about was how to complete the whole Quran in 30 days and maybe start another round. I realised this shouldn't be the way for me; Alhandulillah for the ability to recite my Quran everyday as much as possible especially in the early hours of the morning. But I told myself there should be more to it during Ramadan, so I started studying the Quran rather than just reciting like every other day, this has made it almost impossible for me to complete the whole Quran in 30 days, but it gives me a better understanding and connection to the words of Allah (S). This Ramadan is all about memorization, haha! Walahi this hasn't been easy but in shaa Allah I want to end this Ramadan knowing it wasn't like any other in the past. Anyway going on with #ramadanreads , the four names today bring to fore the Lord as a creator and highlight the magnitude of his presence ❤ AL-MUTAKABBIR - a name that reminds us that he is free of flaws and imperfections and if anyone has reasons to be proud, only he does due to his unmatched status. AL-KHALIQ - the creator and the omnipotent , he is the guardian and maker of all things on earth, in the heaven and everything in between. AL- BARI - he created matter , and everything else from it. Another name glorifying him as a creator and the caretaker , this name gives us reasons to marvel at his unflawed creations. AL- MUSAWWIR - He has shaped numerous creations in the most incredible and awe inspiring ways. He has endowed each being with unique attributes making him all the more praiseworthy. Overall , these names remind us of the mercies and miracles that we are bestowed with. We are blessed with so much beauty to eat , cherish , utilise and enjoy. Muslim Voices 2018

Last year I discovered the Ramadan Readathon hosted by Nadia at Headscarves and Hardbacks. It was a great reminder to seek out books written by Muslim authors. I read four novels and a memoir by Muslim authors during the month of June. I’m not a Muslim, but the readathon is an excellent chance to support Muslim creators and connect with others. It’s also a great way to find recommendations for some awesome books.

This year, the Ramadan Readathon is back and there are several other associated activities. There is a blog tour from May 17th to June 15th and there is also a photo challenge and a hashtag so people who aren’t necessarily doing the readathon can still have opportunities to participate. Visit Nadia’s blog to learn more about participation and to find lists to help plan what to read or to purchase for your library.

Another similar campaign is #RamadanReads. This was started by Aisha Saeed a few years ago and people use the hashtag to purchase, read, and promote books with Muslim representation.

Here are the books I have on my TBR this year and I am likely to add a few more:

Not the Girls You’re Looking For by Aminah Mae Safi Feiwel Friends

Lulu Saad doesn’t need your advice, thank you very much. She’s got her three best friends and nothing can stop her from conquering the known world. Sure, for half a minute she thought she’d nearly drowned a cute guy at a party, but he was totally faking it. And fine, yes, she caused a scene during Ramadan. It’s all under control. Ish.

Except maybe this time she’s done a little more damage than she realizes. And if Lulu can’t find her way out of this mess soon, she’ll have to do more than repair friendships, family alliances, and wet clothing. She’ll have to go looking for herself.

Mariam Sharma Hits the Road by Sheba Karim HarperTeen
