Dragon headcanon time
A bunch of my headcanons for the hbg dragon au, because why not? I’ve included a little bit for everyone who has a design so far, and a few general bits. Very long post, be warned lol
Illumina: I haven’t gotten to show it off in much of the art, but his wings are purple on top and void black underneath. Makes him very hard to see from below at night, and added to the fact that he has partial night vision, he’s at his best in the dark. It’s also one of the reasons, alongside his very good navigational sense, that he’s one of the best at finding his way around Silverr’s caves.
Fruit: One of my favorite bits of Fruit’s design are his horns. They’re turned backwards like a ram’s so he can headbutt other dragons. He does this both as a show of affection and to start a fight, so naturally it’s very confusing to everyone else. Also interesting is that Illumina and Fruit’s eggs hatched right next to one another and they grew up together. It’s clear they aren’t siblings, and dragons don’t tend to leave their eggs close to one another for fear of the hatchlings fighting. So how did the eggs end up together, and why did they hatch at nearly the same time? Fruit and Illu have no idea, but surely it happened for a reason.
Feinberg: Fein’s egg was struck by lightning just moments before he hatched. What should have killed him instead turned his wings, horns, and tail into crystalline glass, and imbued his natural magic with electricity. As a result he can’t be near a storm without going feral from the electricity in the air, it drives him mad until he lashes out at anyone near him and calls him to fly directly into the storm until he’s so high up he can barely breathe. He’s since learned that if he’s deep enough in the caves the storms don’t affect him, but the first time it happened around hbg didn’t end so well…
Silverr: Every part of his design was about adapting to living in caves in complete darkness. He’s blind because his horns grew where his eyes should be, but his horns grew like that in the first place because they’re the main way he navigates a new place. They’re huge, which means he can bump into a wall and hit his horns first, not his face, and they’re extra sensitive to vibrations. They also funnel sound into his ears! His wings are made of a thicker leather like material, which makes them a little more resistant to being injured, but they’re still pretty tattered from being dragged along rough stone his whole life. Another reason it’s hard for him to fly, his wings aren’t really made for it. They’re more suited to being used as a buffer to figure out his surroundings, like his horns. That didn’t stop him from figuring out how to fly though. His magic also gives him some control over the stone and earth, which allows him to “see” anything happening in the caves through vibrations, like a virtual map in his head, and he can cause minor earthquakes.
Reign: He’s pretty much just a bear dragon. He comes from a giant forest with ancient and tall trees, and he’s a lot better at climbing than most other dragons because of it. Unfortunately forests are also very good places for dragons to live, and he spent most of his life before hbg fighting for his life. He’s pretty small, but he’s a smart fighter and he uses his size to his advantage. If you underestimate him because of it, he’ll make sure it’s your downfall. He’s pretty happy to not have to fight anymore now that he has hbg to back him up, but if he had to, he’s easily one of hbg’s best.
Fyroah: He’s made of fire. Literally. He was born in the Nether beneath a huge lava lake. His wings, tail, and mane are all technically fur, but he can turn on and off “fire mode” where they turn into actual flames. Needless to say, because he wants to cause trouble, he’s almost always in fire mode. Fire demon (affectionate). He‘s one of the few dragons that can stand to be in the nether for an extended period of time, most others get bothered by the ash and brimstone in the air, or the oppressive heat.
Nerdi: He’s really long and noodly because he comes from a jungle! It’s an advantage there to be small and quick, and he’s very much like a boa constrictor with wings. (Yes, he sleeps curled up on a branch like a snake. Yes, I do need to draw this) His wings are actually not used for flying, he flies more like an eastern dragon, just noodling around in the air by magic. His wings are long and thin because they’re actually used for steering, letting him make sharp turns and steep dives easily. He’s probably the most agile dragon in hbg. However, this doesn’t really lend itself to flying long distances, so he usually just rides along on Fein or one of the other larger dragons.
Mustard: He’s barely old enough to not be considered a hatchling anymore. Hbg found him wandering around a badlands, injured and weak, and decided the only appropriate reaction was to adopt him. Immediately. His hat was a gift from Silverr when they first found him, and he’s kept it ever since. All of hbg are unreasonably attached to him, and even though he can fend for himself just fine now, they will Fight anyone who even comes close to harming him.
Fulham: Even though he’s a water dragon, he’s fully amphibious. He doesn’t need the water to live. He does however very much prefer it. Underwater he’s the best swimmer, and he’s as graceful as Nerdi is when weaving between the trees in the jungle. Out of water, he’s quite literally the worst at flying in all of hbg. His fins are meant to shape ocean currents, not air currents. It takes him a lot of effort to get off the ground, and he tires a lot quicker than anyone else. He’s very good at strategizing though, and there’s a reason he’s one of hbg’s voices of reason in a fight. He knows how to account for his and others’ weaknesses and how to use their strengths to their advantage.
Couriway: His feathers are made of hollow gold, light enough to allow him to fly easily but they start to melt under the sun. As such, he mainly only flies at night, though he has a tendency to push through into the sunrise, leading to him coming home with lost feathers and Fein yelling at him for being reckless. He’s the unofficial leader of their flight, as much as he tries to deny it, it’s obvious that everyone else looks to him for any important decision. A lot of the time he feels like he was pushed into the position and wishes anyone else would take the responsibility, but then something goes wrong and he naturally takes charge because there’s no way he’s letting these idiots deal with something on their own. And there’s a reason they all trust him so much.
Raddles: She’s a cat dragon. She settled in hbg’s territory one day and refused to leave so they all just kind of accepted it, and now she’s as much hbg as anyone else. She’s also very good with potions and alchemy. A lot of hbg get annoyed with her constant requests for strange materials and ingredients, but it usually pays off in the end product. She also has a small black cat named Void, who is the beloved mascot of the flight.
Draconix: Most dragons have inherent magic. Fein can control lightning, Silverr can cause earthquakes, even TapL can infuse items with magic. Draconix however is overflowing with magic. It’s an energy that anyone around him can feel, an aura around him that speaks of danger, of power, of potential. They have very little control over how it manifests, other than the fact that it fluctuates with their emotions. At its greatest, his rage could level mountains, and his love could stop the flow of time. More often than not it works against them, and they’ve learned to temper their emotions to prevent it, but magic isn’t so easily fooled…
TapL: He’s one of the few dragons left that knows the art of enchanting, of taking one’s own magic and sealing it into an object. Such objects are highly sought after, and he focuses mainly on making golden apples, small and easy to hide, but incredibly powerful and able to bring a dragon back from the brink of death. They take a long time to make, and they deplete a large amount of his magic, so there’s a very limited supply. He still considers each one worth it though, since they’ve undoubtedly saved several lives. Hbg take great care not to give away his secret, and it’s one of the few things they all take seriously. If word were to spread that an enchanter still lived, he would be hunted to the ends of the earth for his ability.
Punz: Punz is a dragon of two worlds. He is originally from Dream’s flight, and valued very little outside of the safety of the flight and the amount of gold in his hoard. He regularly visits the sand vaults, an enchanted maze of tunnels holding a great fortune for any dragon brave enough to risk their lives to claim it. It’s there that Illumina saved his life, and later introduced him to hbg, unknowing of his allegiance to another flight. Despite their strangeness, Punz couldn’t help but be dragged into their little family, and he now lives torn between the two flights, neither knowing about his association with the other. Dragons do not belong to two flights at once. It’s an unspoken rule that the flight demands total loyalty, and he knows he can’t continue like this, but can he really abandon one family in exchange for the other?
Zylenox: He comes from a mushroom island! I explained most of his lore in his mcsrtober post but it’s very based on fungi and mushrooms. Silverr once gifted him some glowing mushrooms from his caves and they’re still one of Zylenox’s most treasured possessions. Since he basically grew up on an island with no outside influence, he doesn’t really understand normal dragon socialization. He’s actually pretty lucky he ran into hbg first, instead of random dragons that could’ve killed him if they didn’t realize he was just ignorant and not actively malicious.
Dylqn: His magic lets him have a symbiotic relationship with the plants that grow on him. He usually has bright flowering plants that provide him extra energy so long as he cares for them, but he recently picked up some more carnivorous additions, and he’s not sure how he feels about the bloodthirsty tendencies they seem to provoke from him. Unfortunately it’s very hard to kill the plants without killing him as well. No one knows if it’s related to the plants, but he also changes color occasionally. He’s usually green, but every once in a while he’s blue, or pink, or yellow, for no apparent reason.
Tekniik: Tek hatched on the very top of a mountain, far above the clouds, where his egg was always exposed to the harsh light of the sun. If Fein absorbed the energy of the lightning that struck his egg, then Tek did the same with the pure light. He can see all wavelengths of light, and the lightning patterned marks through his scales glow randomly and without warning. Sometimes it seems like he’s made entirely out of light. It’s occasionally helpful, but usually it’s just vaguely annoying.
Geosquare: His egg hatched in a stronghold, on the verge of the portal to the End. Because of this he’s not really. Fully there. His wings and parts of his body are made entirely of void, existing and not existing at the same time. He crawled his way above ground somehow, and has since forgotten the entire ordeal (or perhaps he was never intended to Remember). He has no idea why parts of him seemingly exist in an unending paradox, or why he can summon the void, or why there’s always a faint call to return at the back of his mind. He doesn’t really care. He has a home now, with friends and cacti, and that’s all he wants.
Extra fun facts
- Dragons outside of hbg constantly get confused between all of the purple dragons
- Dsmp and hermitcraft are also large flights like hbg. The three are aware of one another, but mostly try to stay out of each other’s way. Hbg and hermitcraft are on good terms, hbg and dsmp not so much, due to some past conflicts between individual members. Punz very much complicates this
- A lot of other runners/mcyt exist outside of flights. Hbg are stupidly friendly towards random dragons and it kind of freaks them out a bit, because since when are groups of dragons actually nice, but it also means hbg has random friends they can call on for backup
- The world functions very similarly to Minecraft, with the three dimensions and the portals between. Structures also exist, though many are remnants of some ancient society that lived and died long before the time of dragons. The only ancient structure that appears dragon made is the stronghold, the mythical place where dragons first crossed to the overworld when fleeing from the End, though no living dragon knows its location.
- Dragon eggs are very much influenced by the magic of the area around them. Most dragons never know their parents, since the eggs are usually left to hatch on their own, but even if they did it would be hard to tell family relationships based on looks. Siblings only tend to look alike because they hatch in the same area. Much more than genetics, a dragon’s appearance is determined by the area their egg developed in. Speaking of which, the overworld is much like normal minecraft but with more biomes. And those biomes have latent magic that interacts with dragon eggs, and gives them their appearance and powers.
- Hbg’s territory encompasses two mountains, the river valley in between, the surrounding forests, and more recently, the intricate system of caves below it all. They all live scattered around, though some live much closer together than others. Fruitninja live in a mountain cave together, and Couri and Fein also live fairly close to each other.
