*squints eyes* i didnt need to get into another European competition, but here we are. Im looking up rally stuff now.... . Btw theres a rally race being held near the home of santa clause at the end of july. Are you excited? How do you get ready for a race?

I’m very excited! Although the rally has been postponed until October to keep everyone safe, I still have plans to head up to Jyväskylä for it as soon as we’re able! I haven’t competed myself for a long time, and never would be good enough to drive at this level! But you’ll always find me cheering so loudly from the sides that I can’t speak without rasping for a week after 😅

ECSTATIC KORHONEN CLAIMS SHOCK HOME VICTORY.

Jyväskylä, August 20, 2000 --- Finland’s Alex Korhonen stood on the top step of the podium for the first time in his rallying career after taking victory at his home event. The double Formula One world champion had been all but written off at the start of the weekend, starting in a distant P11, but had improved to P7 by the end of the first stage, making up an astonishing three minute gap. A podium seemed to be in sight for the Subaru team after fellow countryman and championship leader Makinen hit trouble on the special stage.

Heavy rain caught out the next few competitors who inherited the lead, until, unbelievably, Korhonen found himself leading a rally for the first time in his career. All the young Finn had to do was keep the car on the road and not make any mistakes, which he did, to claim victory in front of his adoring home fans. The normally cool-headed Korhonen was almost beside himself at the press conference, drenched in champagne by his co-driver Heikki Rautiainen.

“This feels just as good as winning the championship. We sadly don’t have a Formula One race in Finland, so to win this at home is really, really special--- I am so happy. Even though I grew up in Monaco, I am still Finnish, all the way. This means so much to me. If I only win one rally in my life, this is the one I want it to be. This is one of the best days of my life.” Korhonen was all smiles, in the face of rumors that he will be calling a day on his rallying career next year.

And what of the people who may call this victory a fluke, since it appeared to be Makinen’s race to lose? “I don’t care. I have had a lot of bad luck in my career, like that big accident in Japan, so I will take every bit of good luck that I am given. This trophy--- it’s going right next to my two Formula One championship trophies.” He grinned, to many cheers from the partisan crowd. Finland’s motorsport superstar adds another notch to his belt today.
