i MISS them so much!one of the best book in choices "Platinum"

Platinum Complete Soundtrack
I saw some people wanted to listen to the music again, so I uploaded all current tracks including instrumentals.
Have fun listening!
ââ
Did I spend a hot minute making a Spotify-esque playlist cover just to share the music files? Yes, yes I did. Haha! I felt extra and I had time. And I wanted to use the Berrify logo I made again. đ
Hereâs another one but I liked the one I uploaded better.

Tell the World
Pairing: Raleigh Carrera x Cadence Dorian (Platinum)
Prompt: Image
for: @choicesseptemberchallenge20 ⢠Day 25
Note: Hello! This is my first time joining a fic fest and my first time writing, too. It's not the best but I hope you'll enjoy it. Thank you!
---
Cadence wakes up as the rays of sun hit her eyes. She stirs and tightens her arms around the waist of the man beside him, unwilling to move and get the day started. It hasn't even been 24 hours since the last time she went on stage and she feels so tired. She groans as her phone buzzed once again making the latter chuckle from behind her and stroke her hair.
"Babe, you have to wake up. Your phone has been going off since earlier." Raleigh pats her back lightly as he inched himself away from her only to put a kiss on her forehead and on the tip of his nose. Cadence waits for his lips to land on hers yet she didn't feel it. So he opened her eyes and pouts only to see her boyfriend grining down at her. "Thought it's gonna wake you up and it did. Good morning, hermosa. Let's move now, shall we?" He says finally reaching to let their lips meet.
Cadence groans and hides her head on his neck once again.
"Can't we stay for another hour?" She protested and let herself nuzzle the latter's neck. Raleigh just stays still as she does, holding her tighter.
"You know just how much I'd love that but I bet Fiona would disagree." Just then, her phone buzzed once again. Fiona's caller ID appearing on her screen. Raleigh takes it and answers the call.
"Hey, Fiona." He answers brightly. His husky voice long gone. Cadence chuckles as Raleigh continues bickering with her publicist on the phone.
It was after a few minutes when Raleigh sets the phone down on the night stand that he rolls them over, he ends up hovering on top of her.
"My manager talked with Fiona and it's bad news." Raleigh smirks as he lowers himself to trace kisses on Cadence's neck. She giggles at the sudden contact, lulling her head back to give his boyfriend more access.
"How bad?" Cadence asked him as he goes to kiss her on the lips once again.
"Let's just say, a pap saw me walking into your house last night." Cadence hums and pushed him to sit. She moves to straddle him.
"That's not so bad." Cadence says unfazed, trailing Raleigh's neck and chest with her fingers as she follows them with little kisses. The man held her on the waist pulling her impossibly close.
"Except they saw me carrying a box of condoms." Just like a lightning, Cadence's expression changed as she moved away from Raleigh's body.
"They did what?!" She asked, obivously surprised. Well who wouldn't be? The press will eat this issue. Especially when both of them are coming out with an album next month. Especially when they allegedly broke up three weeks ago.
"They saw me walking into your house with a box of condoms in hand." Raleigh chuckles and pulls her back to him. He leans his forehead against hers and smiles. "It isn't that bad, babe."
"Raleigh, we broke up three weeks ago." Cadence says emphasizing the word broke up as if it'll knock some sense into him.
"That's what they know." Raleigh shrugs, Cadence hits his shoulder lightly and stands up. Grabbing clean towels and heading into the shower. "Oh in the shower? Again?"
"You're not joining me for shower today, Mr.Carrera!" Cadence says out loud just as he was about to enter. He laughs and moves away going back to bed as he waits for her to finish.
This will be a long day.
---
They arrived at Overknight early since they did not make any stops today, Cadence did not even speak to him during the whole ride. She just leaned on his shoulders and not say anything. Not that Raleigh would wish for anything else though. Holding Cadence in his arms is more than enough, but surely, being able to tell the world that she is a big part of his life rather than a phase would be great. They walked into the studio hand in hand. Cadence stayed quiet despite Raleigh's efforts to open up a conversation one after another. They sat side by side into a couch in front of Fiona and Raleigh's publicist, Edward.
"I said that you two should be careful." It was the first thing they heard from the two. Cadence's heart beats fast on her chest. Unable to make herself feel at ease because of the possible scenarios this event might lead up to.
She doesn't get nervous often, but then this might affect both of their careers, and she wouldn't like it if this will harm Raleigh's career in any way. She looks down as the publicists talks about the issue, thinking of ways to avoid further controversies.
"If we're talking about publicity then this issue is definitely doing great in terms of exposure. America loved their relationship, don't you think?" Edward scrolls through twitter showing that the netizens mostly had positivie reactions regarding this.
Some even thinks it's funny how their relationship is an open secret the company is trying to hide. Cadence plays with her hands, still unable of what to make of it. Suddenly, Raleigh's hand covered hers and gives it a little squeeze. When she looks at him, she saw Raleigh grinning at her. So she smiles, too.
They continued discussing with their publicists unable to come up with a definite solution, but with the current position of the issue, it seems like there's no way that it'll worsen. After an hour, Fiona decided that it was enough talk for a day.
"I can see that the issue has no significant effect on your standings. I'll leave it up to you both."
Just like that they were dismissed. They said their goodbyes and head home right after.
---
Contrary to what Raleigh had initially thought, today went by fast. They dozed off to sleep right after they reached home and they played a couple of movies during the afternoon, making out a few times in between. Yet, they still haven't decided on what they should do next.
It was night and Cadence is almost done cooking for dinner. Raleigh, on the other hand, is on the kitchen bar stool when he decided to bring the topic up.
"I want to go public." He says randomly as he takes in the sight of his girlfriend moving across the kitchen. Looking a lot more beautiful wearing her messy bun and without make ups on.
This is the kind of sight he would kill to see everyday. The kind of moment he would like to boast around the world. He's the lucky man who gets to eat Cadence Dorian's cooking every day, what's there not to be smug about? He chuckles when he realized Cadence still hasn't moved since he says it. He stands up and goes behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and leaning down on her shoulder.
"I want to tell the world that we own each other, Cadence." He says, placing a soft kiss on her exposed shoulder. Cadence turns the stove off as she looks over her shoulder to reach his lips for a kiss.
"What if some of your fans become mad again?" She says, now leaning her head into Raleigh's chest.
"They're not fans if they act like that. Besides, I don't intend on having fans forever. On the other hand..." he trails off and perched a kiss on top of her head. "... I plan to stick with you from now on."
Cadence chuckles at this, turning around and dragging Raleigh back into the living room where she pushed her boyfriend into the couch and she sits on his lap. Raleigh's arms are wrapped into her in seconds.
"Is this real? Raleigh Carrera being cheesy? Sounds like headlines to me." She teased as she loops her arms around Raleigh's neck.
"Make it a headline then, I don't care." He says nuzzling her neck. "If that's how you want to go public then so be it. Good way, too, since they'll realize I probably plan on marrying you."
"And do you?"
"Of course, hermosa." He chuckles placing yet another kiss on her neck. Cadence giggles and hugs him tighter.
"I love you."
"I love you more, Cadence."
"You go and tell the world how crazy you are for me then."
Raleigh placed one more kiss before the latter stood up and heads back into the kitchen. He follows after a few seconds hastily snapping and image of his girlfriend. Then he opens twitter and types, attaching the picture he just took, clicking on the tweet button once he's done.
He chuckles as their friends replied one by one. The people went crazy, as their names enter the worldwide trends in just a few minutes. Cadence confusedly looked at him as she unlocks her phone only to see his tweet.
"God, why is my boyfriend like this?" She frowns and placed their food in front of Raleigh who is still busy scrolling through the tweets. Cadence sits beside him and sends a tweet.
"What's this? You actually don't mean..." Raleigh trails off and shakes his head, moving closer to Cadence. "Nah, you won't break up with me." He says sneaking his arms around her waist immediately.
"Oh, who told you?" Cadence raises her eyebrows, bringing her tweet to life as he teased his boyfriend. Yet, Raleigh didn't budge. He still wears his confident smirk, inching himself closer to her. He leans his head on Cadence.
"You did."
They both laughed as they started eating. Finally relieved that they wouldn't be sneaking out for a date tomorrow, or the next few days, or ever. They happily ate dinner. Glad that they can finally date freely now.

IDOL | Chapter 5 [Unfinished]
Platinum x Ride or Die (AU) Crossover
Pairings: (Major) Ride or Die | Logan x Ellie (Minor) Platinum | M!Raleigh x Cadence Warnings: PG13+ Word Count: 11k+ A/N: I canât even begin to apologize that Iâm leaving this story unfinished. I tried to finish it, I really did but school is just so heavy right now that I barely have time to do anything else. And as Iâve said, the passion isnât there anymore. Iâll post up to whatever Iâve written and if given the time, Iâll definitely come back to finish it. If you decide to drop this story, I completely understand. Iâm sorry that I let you down :( @troublemakerinspace @raleiighcarrera @harrys-wheezys @raleeeighcarreras
âWow, when you said youâd pick me up I thought you meant your manager was going to drive us.â
âThe option was definitely there,â Logan grins as he pushes himself off of the yellow and black-striped 2005 Devore GT to stand in front of her. âBut I thought it would be nice if I drive.â
Ellie chuckles as she makes her way to the passengerâs door and takes her seat just as Logan slides into the driverâs seat.
âAre you a good driver?â Ellie asks teasingly as she buckles her seatbelt. âIf I get into a car accident and Mona finds out, sheâll call the ambulance and tell it to turn around.â
âIâm a great driver,â Logan chuckles as he revs the engine and he pulls out into the road. âDo you trust me?â
Ellie blinks at him for a moment before a smile tugs on her lips. âWeirdly enough, yes.â
The smile on Loganâs face strums the little tiny strings of her heart. Itâs absurd how good he looks behind the wheel. If he was handsome during the any normal setting, itâs magnified by tenfold at how easy and comfortable he is as he drives. She tries not to stare at him, telling herself that she has set ground rules for how sheâll interact with Logan, but she seems to be breaking them every minute sheâs in his presence.
âAs an honored guest of the Devore, you have the privilege of picking the song.â
Ellie chuckles as she pulls out her phone and scrolls through her playlist. âDo you treat every passenger like this?â
âOnly the pretty ones,â He glances at her with a devilish smile and a small wink.
She ducks her head to hide away the blush before her eyes light up at the instrumental track of Candy. She had asked Micah to send it to her so she could practice a little on her own before promotions truly start and theyâll have to start appearing on TV to sing it. She clicks on the song and the intro of the synth fills the car and a smile pulls on Loganâs lips.
âLogan, letâs do it live.â
âHuh?â
Logan barely has time to register her words when she starts to sing the intro of the song as she dances and does small body rolls in time with the beat. Logan lets out a laugh and he glances at her in amusement as he listens to her and waits for his cue.
Their voices fill the inside of the carâteasing, playful, flirtyâand Ellie feels light and free. Sheâs never had this before, someone she can sing along with without the pressure of hitting the right note or conveying the right emotions. Even when sheâs singing with Raleigh or Cadence, thereâs always a certain standard she has to hold herself around them. After all, her voice croaking in front of those two would send her into a spiral of embarrassment.
But she doesnât have the same worry with Logan.
Cadence had told her of this feelingâthe feeling of being able to sing with someone that youâre so in tune with that it feels natural when thereâs only you, the other person and the music. Cadence said that she has that with Raleigh.
And nowâŚEllie can admit a little that she just might have it with Logan.
The fourth verse comes in and he glances at her briefly, their gaze locking, and she grins as they sing out the next lines together in a perfect blend of light and husky.
I say, I want to be clear and simple I want to adjust just for you, oh yeah I'll give you something original I know how complicated you are
Logan attempts the sustained high note in the bridge and Ellie rolls her eyes because of course he still has excellent breathing control and can let out a perfect G#4 note even while seating down. At this point, Ellie feels like thereâs nothing this guy canât do.
The song finally finishes the last of its note and the playlist jumps to the next song on her list, a slow and soothing song from Cadenceâs new album. A comfortable silence settles between them and Ellie is once again amazed that even in the silence, it doesnât feel awkward or stifled.
âIâm probably the luckiest fan in the world,â Logan says as he turns into an intersection. âI get to hear you sing live with only me as the audience.â
Ellie smiles. âDonât sell yourself short. Iâm pretty lucky to hear you sing live as well. You have a great voice.â
âThanks,â He chuckles a little as he stops at a red light. âIâm really glad that I got to do this collab with you Ellie.â
âMe too,â She leans back and lays her head on the window. âWhich reminds me. I never got to ask. Why the sudden genre shift? The songâs great but itâs not your usual release.â
Logan nods with a small smile, a look of apprehension crossing his face in a blink of a second.
âI really donât like my songs. I just got roped into singing it because it sells,â He takes one hand off of wheel and gestures to himself. âAlong with the whole heartbroken bad boy image.â
Ellie nods and looks at him sadly. Itâs not that uncommon for companies to completely have control over an artists sound and image. Itâs usually for younger and newer artists where they have no power to truly choose what they want to do with their music. She was lucky than when she started out, she had Raleigh and Cadence backing her so whatever musical direction she was going to venture into was going to be supported by two music industry giants. But for artists like Logan? Theyâre perpetually bound to whatever their producers want for them until they can somehow break out of the image without alienating their current fans. Fortunately for Logan, their collab single âCandyâ is a big hit. Maybe this will even open up the path for him to finally sing songs he actually likes.
âAre you saying that youâve never had your heart broken then?â She teases. âIs that why you canât fully commit to the heartbroken bad boy image?â
âMaybe Iâm the one that breaks hearts,â Logan says, his voice almost pained, before the light turns green and he drives. âOr maybe I just donât like the bad boy title.â
Ellie chuckles a little. âYeah itâs pretty outdated. Plus, if you canât hold yourself to the same standard as Raleigh Carrera then why even try?â
âWhat? Property damage and grand theft auto?â He smirks. âI could totally do that.â
âHey! The courts cleared that up, the car was legit,â She laughs and leans back on the seat. âIt created a shitstorm in the company though and any car he wants to buy has to go through the suits now. Cadence was not happy.â
âIâll bet,â Logan snickers as he pulls up to the restaurant he had recommended to Ellie the night before. âCadence seems like she doesnât take any of Raleighâs shit.â
âYou have no idea,â Ellie chuckles as she unbuckles her seatbelt and gets out of the car. âBut I guess thatâs what makes them work.â
âYeah?â Logan grins as he opens the glass door for her.
âYeah,â She looks around the restaurant and sees that itâs practically empty except for them. âUhâŚyou sure this place is open?â
âYeah itâs owned byâVaughn!â Logan turns to walk to Vaughn coming out of the kitchen and gives him a hug.
âLogan!â Vaughn exclaims as he returns Loganâs hug and looks over to where Ellie is standing. âWoah, you brought your girlfriend? I thought you were bringing Ellie over.â
Ellie tries to rein in the blush on her cheeks but fails miserably as Logan stands next to her.
âThis is Ellie,â He turns to look at her with an apologetic smile. âSorry about him, heâs clueless when it comes to anything other than cooking.â
Ellie smiles as she steps forward and offers her hand. âNice to meet you Vaughn. Are you Loganâs friend?â
âCousin more like it,â Logan corrects with a fond smile.
âWe ainât actually related. But weâre family. Known each other for a long time,â Vaughn replies as he motions to the empty restaurant. âPick a seat! Iâll have the specials right out.â
Logan turns to look at Ellie expectantly as he points to the table hidden away from the glass windows. They take their seats across each other and Ellie is only now realizing how much all of this feels like a date. She banishes those thoughts as quickly as they came, this is just a casual hanging out with a potential friend and co-worker. Thatâs all there is.
âSo, do you always clear out restaurants when you bring girls out for lunch?â
Ellie cringes at herself and groans internally. She was thinking it of course but she didnât expect herself to outright say it.
âNot often,â Logan replies with a smile. âThis place is pretty popular. I had to ask some serious favors from Vaughn so we could have it for ourselves today.â
Ellie smiles a little. âYou didnât have to, you know. I wouldâve been fine either way.â
âI was thinking that a thousand pair of eyes constantly glancing at you while you eat would be uncomfortable.â
Ellie chuckles as she tucks her hair behind her ear. âYou overestimate how much I get recognized in public. People rarely ever notice.â
âLiar,â Logan grins. âI wouldâve noticed you from a thousand miles away.â
Ellie grimaces a little as she looks at him teasingly. âNot to be rude but are you always thisâŚflirty?â
Logan laughs as he looks at her face earnestly. âCanât help myself I guess.â
Ellie rolls her eyes a little. Perhaps thatâs why itâs so difficult for her to stick to the rules and guidelines sheâs set up for Logan when he seems to be so adept at making her break them.
The ping of Loganâs phone cuts through the silence and he grabs it from the table, astonishment and awe taking hold of his face.
âWoah,â Logan says as he turns his phone to her. âLooks like Candy has 80 million views on PlayMe now.â
âSeriously?!â Ellie exclaims as she takes his phone and stares at the number below the video. âThis is insane.â
âYeah I didnât think it would be this popularâŚâ Logan says in awe before his face softens.
âI did,â Ellie grins as she hands him his phone back. âAnd not just because of me by the way. The song is really great Logan. You should write your own stuff more often.â
âAfter this, maybe Iâll finally be able to,â Logan looks at her gratefully. âThanks Ellie. You have no idea how much Iâve wanted this.â
âNo problem. I really meant what I said back then. About how I can help you out and be your friend. If you ever need help just hit me up andââ Ellieâs eyes flick to the ringing of her phone and her eyebrows shoot up in surprise when she sees Monaâs name flashing on the screen. She had already informed Mona that sheâll be taking the day off so this call must be important. âSorry itâs my manager. Iâll be quick.â
Logan nods. âTake your time.â
Ellie nods as she grabs her phone and moves a little ways away from their table before she takes the call.
âMona hi, whatâs up?â
âAre you with Logan?â
Ellieâs eyebrows furrow in confusion and absolute fear. She hadnât said anything about why she wanted a day off. Was Mona just this good? Was someone tailing her?
âUhâŚyes,â She replies as she looks around the restaurant in apprehension in case sheâll see Mona suddenly pop out of nowhere. âBut its just lunch I swear! And weâre both sober and weâll stay sober. Iâm not up to troubleââ
âI donât care about that, put me on loud speaker. I need to talk to you both and make sure youâre alone.â
âTo usâŚboth?â Ellie asks as she confusingly makes her way back to the table. Logan looks at her with a question in his eyes just as she takes her seat again. Ellie shrugs before she pulls the phone away from her ear, puts in on loud speaker and places it in the middle of the table. âYouâre on loud speaker Mona.â
âGood. Logan, can you hear me?â
âUh yeah I can,â Logan looks to Ellie for answers but Ellie merely shakes her head signaling that she doesnât know either. âWhat can I do for you?â
âIâll cut right to the chase. With how popular Candyâs release is, the company has approved the music video. Weâll start production in two weeks.â
âSeriously?!â Ellie exclaims as she shares an excited and happy look with Logan. âThatâs great news Mona!â
âYeah and one more thing. We need you both in a fake relationship to drum up the release of the music video. I already went through this with your manager Logan. He should be calling you about this soon.â
âWoah wait,â Logan looks at Ellieâs phone apprehensively before he glances at Ellie. âFake relationship? This isnât. I mean I wasnâtââ
âMona you know how I feel about fake relationships,â Ellie cuts in, annoyance lacing her voice. âWhy canât we just promote the song the normal way?â
âThis isnât just about the song Ellie, itâs to clean up your image as well. Everyone loves you with Logan, heâll basically become your Cadence.â
Ellie frowns.
âIf Ellie isnât comfortable with this then I wonât do it,â Logan replies sternly.
âFine then, you both have until the end of the day to give me your final decision,â Mona pauses for a moment before her voice drops down to something soft and caring. âThis is good for you Ellie. I wouldnât have suggested this unless I knew it was going to work. Have I ever led you wrong?â
Mona doesnât afford Ellie the time to reply as she drops the call. Ellie lets out a heavy sigh and takes the phone and shoves it into her pocket, hoping that she wonât have any more calls to ruin her day.
âShit. This is fucked up,â Logan says as anger and annoyance takes hold of his voice.
âYeah but not uncommon,â She sighs and leans back on her seat as she thinks about it.
When Cadence revealed to her that the first time Raleigh and her started to date was actually just a fake relationship, she had vowed herself to never take that route. Mainly because she wanted to spare herself from the drama of being in a fake relationship with someone she had no feelings for. Pretending to kiss and fawn over a guy sheâll barely talk to outside of a few convincing texts to screenshot and post on Twitter to parade their relationship around like a prized horse.
She wants to be authentically herself because she owes it to the fans that love and support her.
âWhat do you think Logan?â
âI mean what I said Ellie,â Logan says as he leans forward a little and gazes into her eyes. âIf you donât want this then I donât want this.â
A small smile tugs on her lips. âSo if I was okay with thisâŚyouâd do it?â
Logan chuckles a little. âI meanâŚwould any fan pass up the opportunity to fake date their idol?â
Ellie laughs a little as she takes the table napkin in her hands and twists it around nervously. She weighs her options. Mona wasnât lying about the image clean up. Itâs no doubt that once her new album drops in the coming months, itâll be used to comb through all of her relationships in the past. So much of the songs she plans to record in the album revolves around heartbreak and recovering from that heartbreak that she knows full well that her critics will unfairly attach a guy to every track in that album. If she gets into a fake relationship with Logan and they âbreak upâ amicably, then all of it will just bounce back to Logan alone. Maybe they could even spin the story so that sheâs the dumpee which would then earn her sympathy and support for getting dumped by a truly great guy.
Plus, if sheâs being honest with herself, itâll give her a test run on the tiny crush she has on him without all the pesky strings of getting attached in a real relationship.
Itâs all just positives at this point so how could she say no?
âOkay, Iâve made up my mind,â She glances up at Logan shyly before she steels her confidence and clears her throat. âSo uh Logan, will you be my very first fake boyfriend?â
The way his eyes sparkle and the way the smile stretches on his lips makes Ellie momentarily forget how to breathe.
âIâll make you so happy Ellie,â He promises, more truthfully than he had initially intended before he reaches forward and offers his hand. âItâll be an honor to have you as my first fake girlfriend.â
Ellie laughs a little as she takes his hand, his palms warm against hers, and shakes on the deal just as Vaughn comes arrives with his specialties and sets it the down on the table with a big grin before he goes back into the kitchen.
âOkay, so how did it happen?â
Logan looks at her curiously just as heâs about to take a bite from his burger. âHow did what happen?â
âI mean how did we start dating? Why did we start dating?â
He blinks at her, confusion clear on his face. âBecause you like me and I like you back?â
âNot good enough,â Ellie says as she takes a bite from chicken sandwich. âIt has to be authentic and it has to be meaningful.â
Logan chuckles a little nervously, not really expecting her to be this thorough about the whole thing. After all, he was just planning to post a Pictagram post about it and leave it at that.
âLove at first sight then?â
Ellie coughs and thumps her chest as she looks at him in disbelief. âSeriously? Thatâs so clichĂŠ!â
âItâs plausible,â He smiles and looks at her pointedly as Ellie rolls her eyes.
âHow about this. We hung out a lot after the recording, we talked and realized that we had a lot in common and we ended up liking each other.â
âWhy is this so important?â Logan frowns as he throws a French fry into his mouth. âWhy is it anyoneâs business how we got together? Isnât it enough that weâre dating?â
Ellie scoffs as she takes a sip of her glass of water. âYouâve clearly never been in a fake relationship before.â
âNeither have you,â Logan replies as he playfully bumps her knee under the table.
âYeah but I got references,â She grins as she raises her phone and waves it a little. âPeople always love the backstory and weâll probably get asked about it a lot so itâs better to get our stories straight to really sell it.â
âRightâŚspeaking of selling it, is kissing allowed?â Logan asks cheekily. âWhat are my boundaries? What are the things I can and canât do?â
Ellie chuckles a little. âKissing should be allowed in public. I mean, how else would we make it convincing? Hugging and touching is fine tooâas long as itâs in public.â
âGot it,â Logan smiles.
âHow about you? What are my boundaries?â
Logan tilts his head to the side with a playful smile. âNo food in the Devore?â
Ellie laughs. âIs that all? Youâre easy to please.â
âIâm a simple guy I guess,â Logan hands her some tissues when some of the sauce clings to the side of her lips. âWe should probably also lay out all of our bad habits while weâre at it. Get it all out in the air so we donât annoy each other.â
Ellie nods. âYouâre right. Iâll go first. Iâm cranky during mornings and I hate food that feels mushy no matter how good it tastes.â
âHmmâŚâ Logan perches his elbow on the table and leans his cheek on his closed hand. âNo one drives the Devore but me and Iâm really particular about my hair products.â
âYou should tell me what you use in your hair. I donât know how you got it to be so soft,â An embarrassed flush takes hold of her cheeks when she realizes that she just brought up the night she had undoubtedly buried her fingers in his hair.
âI could take you out shopping,â Logan offers with a knowing smile. âPart of the fake boyfriend experience.â
âAnd Iâll make sure to drag you around multiple stores,â Ellie smiles teasingly. âPart of the fake girlfriend experience.â
Logan pretends to groan as he tilts his head back. âI feel like Iâm getting the short end of this deal.â
âHey!â She bumps her knee against his underneath the table. âYou get to fake date the Ellie Wheeler, not many can say they had the privilege.â
âYouâre right,â Logan answers honestly, his eyes gazing into hers. âIâm really lucky.â
Ellie smiles softly as a bubble of worry start to form itself in her stomach. âDo you thinkâŚweâll be fine? I mean, nothing bad is gonna happen right?â
âWhatâs the worse that could happen?â Logan asks with a shrug as he leans back on his chair. âWe get along and we make great music together. Everythingâs going to be fine.â
Ellie nods a little, her fears disappearing with his words. With how crazy her life has been in the past few months, this could very well be the first break sheâll get since the Colt scandal. In theory, nothing bad should happen if she just keeps her crush as just a crush and cruise through the next few months until their eventual breakup.
Everything is going to be great.
~*~
âIâm calling Mona right now.â
âBabe, come on. This is Ellieâs decisionââ
âShut up Raleigh,â Cadence leaves it at that as she moves to the kitchen of their penthouse and starts a heated discussion with Mona.
Ellie looks towards Cadence direction a little guiltily. After she had lunch with Logan and after ironing out the last of the details for their fake relationship, she decided to drop by Cadence and Raleighâs penthouse so she could give them the news herself rather than the subtle and suggestive Pictagram posts theyâll both be dropping within the week.
Raleigh sighs and runs his hand through his brown and messy hair before he looks at Ellie sitting on their plush couch. âSo how long is this going to go on?â
âAbout three months or so,â Ellie says as she takes some of the candy they usually leave out on their coffee table. âUntil Iâm almost finished with my album I think. Mona still hasnât told me the specifics.â
âHmmâŚâ Raleigh acknowledges as he observes her quietly. âWant some advice?â
âUh, I didnât know youâd have some Raleigh, you did say I should fake date him to promote the song,â Ellie grins as Raleigh glares at her lightly. âBut alright, give it to me.â
âTake it from someone who got fucked up from a fake relationship,â He motions his head towards the kitchen. âIf you have even the slightest feelings for him, donât do it or youâre going to end up hurting yourself.â
Ellie frowns. âBut you two worked out thoughâŚâ
âYeah but the shit we went through?â Raleigh sighs as he shakes his head, his voice a little pained. âI had to watch her get dragged by the media and I couldnât do or say shit because we âbroke upâ, then I had to pretend like I was over her and pretend like I didnât give a shit when I saw her kiss another guy. Even if it was a fake rel. That shit messes with your head, you know?â
Ellie nods sadly. âI wonât develop feelings for Logan. I promise.â
âGood, keep it that way,â Raleigh shrugs before the familiar playful and teasing smile makes its way to his lips. âBut if you start to feel like itâs there, itâs a good indication that its time to bounce.â
Ellie grins just as Cadence makes her way back into the living room with a huff and deep furrow on her eyebrows.
âI talked to Mona.â
âSounds more like it was yelling babe.â
Raleigh merely smiles at the glare Cadence sends his way before she sits next to Ellie and takes Ellieâs hands into hers.
âI understand why you did this. Iâm not going to say itâs easy but if this is what you really want then I wonât stop you. JustâŚbe careful okay?â
âYeah and have fun!â Raleigh says as he reaches out to the bowl of candy and throws it towards Ellie who clumsily catches it. âIâve met Logan, heâs a nice guy.â
âArenât they all?â Cadence sighs as she leans back on the couch. âIâm not saying that it wonât be fun. Sure, it will be but itâs also going to difficult when the real and fake justâŚblur together and thatâs when it starts to get less fun.â
âWhen did it start to blur for you Cadence?â Ellie asks innocently as Raleighâs eyes sparkle in absolute delight as he leans forward and looks at his fiancĂŠe with curiosity and affection.
âYeah Cadence when did it start to blur for you?â
Cadence rolls her eyes as a small smile tugs her lips. âThe charity function when we sneaked away.â
âAh,â Raleigh leans back with a fond smile. âThatâs a good one.â
Ellieâs eyes bounce between them and she already knows that sheâs effectively been shut out. Not that she minds, sheâs practically used to the two of them so attached and magnetized to each other that itâs not uncommon for her to feel like the perpetual third-wheel.
âRight, Iâm going home guys,â Ellie announces as she stands from the couch and unconsciously pockets the candy Raleigh had thrown to her. âI still have songs to write.â
âKeep up us updated!â Cadence calls out as Ellie makes her way to the penthouse elevator. âAbout the album and Logan!â
âAlways,â Ellie calls out just as the elevator doors close in front of her. She sighs and leans back on the elevator and lets her mind wander. Itâs not like she didnât have her apprehensions, after all sheâs well aware of the things she could be risking if she ends up falling for Logan.
But a part of her is undoubtedly curious. What kind of boyfriend would Logan be? Would he be just as cheesy and flirty or would she see a different side to him? Would she be able to pull some inspiration from their fake relationship for her album?
The last question makes her flush a little as she gets into the cab and makes her way back to her penthouse. It wouldnât be weird for her to write a song about Logan, after all an artist is supposed to get inspiration from the influence and their environment right? It would be weirder if she didnât have any songs about Logan on her album if they plan to fake date for three months or so.
Ellie doesnât have time to fully delve into those thoughts when she reaches the building her penthouse and she hurriedly makes her way to her floor. She goes through the motions of putting away her keys and flicking on the lights before she makes her way to her bedroom and flops down on the mattress.
She takes a minute to stare at the nonsense patterns of her ceiling before she reaches into her pocket to pull out her phone when her hands close in on a small round object. She pulls it out and looks at the red candy with confusion before she realizes that itâs from Raleigh and Cadenceâs place.
An idea suddenly hits as she quickly scrambles to sit up on the bed and takes out her phone. She tears open the wrapper and presses the candy on her lips. She turns the camera of her phone to her before she snaps twenty or so pictures before settles on one and places a filter to make it look a little bit aesthetically pleasing. A wide smile takes hold of her lips as she pulls up her Pictagram account and posts the picture with the caption:
Boy Iâm your candy. Tell me what youâre waiting for.
Itâs subtle and suggestive, just like they agreed on, after all itâs just part of the lyrics for their single âCandyâ and people could even say that Ellie is simply promoting the songâbut with no link to the actual single nor the usual words of âstream Candyâ attached anywhere, the comments that rush in quickly figure out what sheâs hinting on.
I knew it! I fucking knew it! This is folks, this is the sign we needed that theyâre dating. Oh my god Iâm so happy but Iâm so sad?? But Iâm so happy too omg If she breaks his heart, Iâm gonna kill her. I heard that thereâs gonna be an MV dropping. Will we get a kiss scene???
Ellie laughs a little as she lays back down on the bed and continues to scroll through the comments that come in. She skips through the hate comments, already immune to them at this point, and focuses on the love and support of their ârelationshipâ. She feels a little tinge of guilt that sheâs fooling her fans like this but at the end of the day, itâs her life and sheâs allowed to live it according to how she wants to. Â Â Â
A notification pops up in her screen and her heart races when she sees that Logan has posted something. She navigates to his page and when the picture loads, the little squeal of delight she lets out is both embarrassing and well-earned.
The picture is a shirtless selfie of Logan with a piece of candy trapped tantalizingly between his teeth as he looks into the camera with playful smile and sparkling brown eyes. The caption at the bottom reading:
Girl Iâm your candy. All I want is you my love.
Itâs far from the âsubtleâ that they had agreed on but itâs not like she dislikes it. In fact, it puts a silly smile on her face that she canât wipe away. Now, sheâs wondering if this truly is his first fake relationship because he just seems too good at it.
Ellie goes to look at the picture again, carefully trying to commit to memory everything about it, before she closes her phone and tosses it next to her. She knows that tomorrow, every celebrity gossip blog is going to start writing articles about their Pictagram posts and sheâll feel the full effects of their fake relationship once dawn breaks.
But for now, she allows herself to get lost in her thoughts and lets the exhaustion of the day pull her to sleep. Because tomorrow, sheâll be going through an experience sheâs never had before.
An experience that, that she hopes, will bring more good than bad.
~*~
âHelloooo? Earth to Ellie?â Ingrid huffs as she crosses her arms in front of her chest. âLook if youâre too busy to hang out with me and get pics for my Pictagram, we can always reschedule.â
âHuh? Oh, sorry,â Ellie replies sheepishly as she places her phone on the table. âMy bad Ingrid, what were you saying?â
âI was saying,â Ingrid says as she gestures her hand to Ellie, her sparkly pink nails glinting under the florescent lights of the cafĂŠ. âWhatâs up with you and Logan?â
âNothingâs up.â
Ellieâs phone pings with a new message and Ingrid narrows her eyes suspiciously as she leans in and swipes Ellieâs phone from the table. Ellie scrambles to get it back but Ingrid is too quick and sheâs already inputting Ellieâs password and seeing the new message.
âStill up for date night, El?â Ingrid reads in delight and shock before she turns to Ellie with a dramatic gasp. âEllie Wheeler youâre dating Logan and you didnât tell me? What, are we not friends anymore or something?â
âShh!â Ellie moves across the table between them and grabs her phone as she nervously looks around the semi-crowded space of the cafĂŠ. âAnd heâs exaggerating. Itâs not date night, weâre just watching a movie.â
âYeah because thatâs soooo not a date,â Ingrid rolls her eyes as she picks up her cup of tea and takes a sip. âWhatever. Iâm happy for you, heâs definitely an upgrade from all the assholes youâve dated in the past.â
âI told you weâre not dating,â Ellie says as she takes a peek at her phone and almost melts a little at the list of movies heâs already curated for them to watch later tonight. âAt least not officially, not until we announce it in three days.â
âAnnounce? Officially?â Ingrid narrows her eyes at Ellie before she lowers her voice. âSo itâs a fake rel?â
âYeah,â Ellie picks one of the movies from his list and sends him a quick message. âItâs just thatâfake. So we arenât actually dating.â
âThen whatâs with his Picta posts?â Ingrid pulls out her own phone and navigates to Loganâs page. âIn the past week heâs either posting about his car, his upcoming album or cryptic posts about you. I mean look at this,â Ingrid clicks on a picture and turns the phone to Ellie. âItâs a picture of him in a field of flowers. The caption literally has the lyrics to your song. Dude sounds like his halfway in love already!â
Ellie blushes a little as she looks at the picture Ingridâs showing her. She really does love that photo, itâs probably one of her favorite ones his posted. In the past few weeks, theyâve both been trying to be âsubtleâ about slowly enticing the public with their supposed relationship but Ellie has gradually learned that there is nothing subtle about Logan. All of his posts leave no room for speculation or doubt while she tries her best to be subtle when she posted a picture of her wearing a yellow and black dress.
âHeâs just really good at the whole fake dating I guess,â Ellie shrugs as her phone pings with another new message from Logan. She glances at her phone and a small smile tugs on her lips when she sees his message.
Nice, I wanted to watch that one. Your place or mine?
Yours, she replies with a small smile.
Ingrid frowns. âI feel like a third wheel and heâs not even here.â
âOkay, phone down now. Letâs take the picture because I need to go and finish up one more song for my album.â
Ingrid rolls her eyes as she motions with her fingers for Ellie to come closer so they can take the picture together over their array of untouched desserts on the table. Ellie smiles prettily, the kind of smile sheâll only ever use when sheâs taking pictures to be posted, as Ingrid tilts her head down a little and pouts her lips a little.
After twenty or thirty pictures with different angles, Ingrid is finally satisfied and flicks through the pictures before she finally settles on one.
âWhat should the caption be?â Ingrid says as her nails tap on screen. âGirls day out? One in a Million reunion?â Ingrid looks up from her phone and frowns when she sees Ellie grinning at her phone before Ingrid sneakily takes a candid photo. âWhen your friend canât get off of her phone because she canât stop talking to her fake boyfriend?â
Ellie glances up at Ingrid with a small frown. âOne in a Million reunion sounds better.â
âYou think?â Ingrid scoffs as she types out the phrase and posts it first. She then pulls up the candid photo she took of Ellie, writes down a caption and posts it. She leans back and observes Ellie and waits patiently for her response.
Ellie furrows her eyebrows before she looks up at Ingrid with blank face. âReally Ingrid?â
âItâs not a lie,â Ingrid smirks knowingly.
Ellie sighs as she reads the caption again under her picture.
Guess whatâs making El smile so much? Hint: itâs a date.
Ingrid is right at least, itâs not a lie that sheâs genuinely excited for her not-a-date with Logan. In the past week or so, theyâve gotten closer. A lot closer than sheâd expect them to be and sheâs starting to see howâŚcharming, caring and genuinely nice Logan can be. It has come to the point where theyâve been talking late into the night until sheâs basically fallen asleep on the phone.
And that terrifies her. Ellie doesnât want to admit it but the feelings sheâs starting to catch from him are starting to spiral into a dangerous territory and if she was smarter, a little more cautious, sheâd cut her losses and ask for this fake relationship to be cancelled and, as Raleigh advised, bounce.
But she doesnât want to. Not when she really likes the feeling of being able to unironically say that the Logan is her boyfriend.
âAnyway, I need to go,â Ellie pockets her phone and stands up from the chair. âLetâs meet up again next week if youâre free.â
âSure,â Ingrid waves her way and flips her blond hair over her shoulder. âBut next time actually pay attention to me, okay?â
âRoger that,â Ellie grins as she places her sunglasses, makes her way to the door and out of the cafĂŠ.

The ping of Loganâs phone sounds loud in the empty space of his makeshift studio in his apartment. He looks at it curiously before he moves the guitar to the side and reaches for the black device. A wide smile pulls on his lips when he sees the picture of Ellie grinning at her phone, his eyes flit to the caption below the picture and the smile on his face starts to physically hurt his cheeks.
He goes to message Ellie, his fingers typing out his thoughts before he can stop them.
Iâm excited too troublemaker. He pauses, deletes the message and tries again.
You look cute in the picture. He pauses again and decides fuck itâheâll send both.
Iâm excited too troublemaker, you look cute in the picture.
He waits with anticipation when he sees the three dots appear and disappear. When he reads her message, heâs sent into a fit of laughter as he lays down on the carpeted floor and holds his phone inches from his face.
Oh my god shut up. She follows up the reply with a cute sticker of a tiny bunny character repeatedly thumping on the chest of a taller bunny.
He grins lazily as he types out his next message. Are you bringing snacks?
Better, I made something.
Logan raises a curious eyebrow. He can confidently call himself an Ellie fan and he, embarrassingly, knows a lot about her. Her knowing how to cook though, somehow, escaped his radar.
Didnât know you could cook. Are you any good?
The reply is instant, almost as if she already knew that he would ask that question.
Of course I am. Donât you trust me?
I do. Because strangely enough, he really does. Careful troublemaker, you know what they say about a way to a manâs heart.
Logan, I donât need to be good at cooking to get through your heart.
Loganâs eyes widen, his heart picking up in speed, and heâs finding it a little difficult to come up with a reply. But his few seconds of silence mustâve set her in a panic when she hurriedly follows it up with another message.
I mean, Iâm already your fake girlfriend, right?
Right, he replies before he gathers what little is left of his self-control to finish his message. Iâll see you later El. I gotta finish up the last song before you come.
Okay, see you later!
Logan lets out a heavy sigh and drops his phone on his chest and lays his forearm across his eyes. His mind swims and he canât stop himself from finally admitting that he has the biggest crush on Ellie Wheeler.
And itâs not just a fan-crush either but a real, tangible, heart-stopping crush.
Not that this is a recent development or anything, heâs noticed that in the past few daysâheâs finding it increasingly difficult when heâs nowhere near his phone. Even when heâs recording the newer songs he wrote for his album that finally got approved (due to Candyâs success), he always goes to his phone after each session so he can reply to whatever message sheâs left for him.
Thatâs never happened to him.
Whenever Logan gets himself involved with a girl, heâs usually fine if they donât talk for a couple days. Hell, he even prefers it since he values his solitude. But with Ellie, it feels as if heâs going to miss out on something important if he doesnât reply to her messages or talk to her at the end of the day.
Itâs a terrifying feeling for him. They havenât even properly stared to fake date and heâs already catching this pesky crush that he canât seem to shake out. And Logan knows himself well. No matter how hard heâs going to try to mask it, itâs going to be obvious on his face when the Paps take their pictures.
He sighs and pushes himself off of the floor and grabs his guitar. Heâs been having trouble with composing his last song for the album since heâs been instructed to make it the kind of heartbroken love-pining that heâs known forâexcept make it R&B pop. He was excited at first, finally being able to blend what heâs known for and what he loves to create, but these days he just canât seem to write down a single word or strum out a single note.
The subject is about heartbreak after all but all heâs been feeling is flutters of butterflies in the past few days.
He strums out the first few notes and looks to his notebook to test out the words heâs able to somehow to write down.
âTell me once again, tell me you love me like you did that moment,â Logan pauses, reaches out to crush out a word, and he tries again. âTell me once again, tell me you love me like you did thatâtime? Fuck!â
Logan places his guitar down and weaves his hand through his hair in frustration. Heâs well aware that if he doesnât finish this song within the month, itâs going to get handed to ghost writers. Heâs also scarcely aware how important this album is. If the reception is good, heâll be able to continue to release songs that heâll actually love to sing on stage for once. No more grumpy producers telling him to cry in the booth and no more forced interviews where he has to pretend that the song is about a girl who broke his heart once.
Itâs finally going to be only him, his music and his own art.
The distant and muted sound of his apartment buzzer reaches his ears and at first, heâs a little annoyed that someoneâs here to interrupt his session but the annoyance is immediately wiped away when he remembers that itâs most likely Ellie.
He pushes himself off of the floor and takes quick and long steps towards the front door and yanks it open. He canât help the smile that breaks out on his face when he sees her standing in front of him with a light peach sundress and a Tupperware of something in her arms.
âHey, Iâm here for movie night.â
âDate night you mean,â He corrects with a grin before he moves to the side and motions for her to enter the apartment. âMake yourself at home. Iâm sure you already know where everything is.â
Ellie rolls her eyes with a smile before she makes her way to his kitchen. âHowâs the song going?â
âAwful. Iâve got a mental block I canât get over,â Logan sighs as he leans on the doorframe of the kitchen and observes her quietly as she pulls out plate and puts it on the counter. âAnyway, what did you make?â
âCookies!â She smiles with pride as she tilts the Tupperware full of cookies to him before she starts to place them on the plate. âI hope you like peanut butter cookies.â
âI love them,â If Logan is being honest with himself, his feelings towards any flavor of cookie is about average. He neither likes them nor hates them but if Ellie is the one that made them, somehow he can find himself to love them. He walks to the counter and plucks one cookie from the plate and takes a bite. His eyes widen a little as the flavor hits his tongue. âDamn, these are good.â
âTold you Iâm good,â Ellie beams with pride as she takes the plate and motions towards the living room. âAlso, whatâs blocking you from the song?â
âYouâ is what heâd like to say but heâs not sure if he can survive to the aftermath of that conversation. So he shrugs and follows behind her as they make their way to the living room.
âDonât know, guess itâs just one of those days.â
âWant me to help?â Ellie abruptly stops walking and turns around, almost sending Logan crashing into her. âI also want to bounce off some lyrics with you for a song Iâm working on.â
Logan thinks for a moment at the proposition. If heâs being honest, heâd rather not revisit the song until heâs let it sleep for a few days. But he does want to hear the new song sheâs working on and there is one song heâs been meaning to let her listen to.
âI have a better idea. I have this song I want to run by you, get your feel for it.â
Ellieâs eyes light up as she looks around a little to try and locate the direction of his studio. âRaincheck on movie night then?â
âSure,â Logan chuckles softly as he points to the door down the hall. âBring the cookies though, something to keep our brain going.â
Ellie nods as she walks towards the door he points to and enters his studio. Itâs a lot smaller than the one in her penthouse but itâs enough provide a good space for creating music. She places the plate of cookies on the table before she sits on the carpeted floor, crosses her legs, and pulls out her phone from her purse so she can find the instrumentals for the song.
Logan chuckles as he takes sits next to her. âI was going to offer you a chair.â
âNo way, I think better when Iâm sitting on the floor.â
Logan smiles softly, the little string of his heart tugging at the thought that itâs the same for him too.
âOkay here are the instrumentals,â Ellie starts, her voice serious, commanding andâfor Loganâextremely sexy. âIâve got the chorus down and the bridge but the first verse still sounds clunky.â
âSing it for me.â
Ellie nods as she presses play, latches on to the lyrics on her phone and starts the song with a few adlibs of soft and raspy ohs.
When I see you, I feel a sense of familiarity After a moment of thinking, I approached you Besides us, everything else has vanished Please trust this experience Match my tempo babe
She finishes and looks at Logan expectantly but he only looks back at her with awe.
âI still canât get over how good your voice sounds,â He chuckles softly when Ellie glares at him slightly. âHand me the lyrics.â
Ellie hands him the phone. He rewinds the song a couple of times and mumbles through the lyrics a little before his eyes catch on to the part where it feels a little clunky.
âHere, this part sounds a little off the beat,â Logan moves her phone closer to her, his shoulders touching hers. âMaybe something with one more syllable to hit the last note?â
âHmmâŚâ Ellie takes her phone and hums through the lyrics, her eyes intensely trained on the words, as Logan observes her with a soft smile. âHow about this? Please trust this moment to me.â
âSing it for me.â
Ellie nods and she gets through the first part quickly before she slows down at the end of the first verse and sings the new lyrics.
Besides us, everything else has vanished Please trust this moment to me Match my tempo babe
âThatâs it,â Logan says as he unconsciously moves closer to her, his face so close he can see the light peach blush on her cheeks. âSounds like a hit already.â
She turns to him with a smile but quickly looks away when she realizes how close their faces are. She distracts herself by typing in the new lyrics to the song. She goes through the entire song again a couple of times, just to make sure that thereâs nothing else he needs to comment on, before sheâs finally satisfied with the results.
âOkay, Iâm done with mine. Let me hear yours.â
Logan chuckles softly as he pushes himself off of the floor and moves to the keyboard in the corner of the room. He takes a seat just as Ellie follows him and stands behind him. Logan looks over his shoulder at her with a smile before he pats the space next to him.
Just as she takes a seat, his fingers fly over the keys and the soft and slow start of the song fills the studio. Although the actual song will have more layers to it, this is the best he can do for now. He drops his voice down a little as he tries to achieve the emotions heâs wanted to inject into this song the moment he composed itâsultry and enticing.
Itâs a little stuffy when I make eye contact with you Iâd like to dive deep into your eyes Iâd like to look into them but I canât If your fingers touch me, I feel like Iâm losing my mind.
He goes through the first verse with ease, the emotions in his heart easily flowing out and mixing with the beat and lyrics of the song and heâs terrified of how easily all these emotions come to him when heâs singing for her.
He glances at her knowingly as he reaches to the second verse, the lyrics of the song starting to jump out of the page and into what little space is left between them.
I think Iâm drunk Try mixing in another blue sapphire Let me know if thereâs an island for me in your sea Itâs like Iâll explode The blue spreads through all of me. You can fall for me, if you want.
He reaches the bridge and belts out a sustained high note and finishes the song with a few adlibs of ohs and lets the last of the note ring out in the studio.
âWow,â Ellie says as she looks up at him with wonder and awe. âThatâs an amazing song Logan. I feel like I already have a favorite song from your album.â
Logan grins as he gazes into her eyes. âNo changes then?â
âNone. Absolutely none,â Ellie unconsciously plays with the edge of her dress. âYou should sing for me more often. I like being your only audience.â
Logan laughs a little, his body unconsciously moving closer to hers. âDoes this mean youâre now a Logan fan?â
âRelease the full album first,â She replies teasingly as she tilts her head to him. âIâll decide then.â
âEllieâŚâ Logan whispers softly, his brown eyes searching hers, as he starts to move lean forward but he catches himselfâhis brain catching up to his erratic heart. He pulls away abruptly and tries to internally shake away the haze that sheâs brought on him. Anymore than this and heâll be helplessly falling into her arms. âAnyway, itâs getting late, donât you think? Donât want Mona to chew your ass out.â
âOh,â Ellie says, the disappointment clear in her voice, before she turns to look at the clock on the wall and is shocked that two hours had run by without her knowledge. âYouâre right, I should go.â
âIâll walk you out,â Logan stands from the chair and grabs the plate from the table. âIâll pack this up too.â
âYou can keep it, it was supposed to be our snacks anyway,â She chuckles as she makes her way out of the studio.
Logan follows dutifully behind her as they walk down the hallway and reach his front door.
âThanks for helping me with the song Logan. Too bad I canât give you the credits for it.â
Logan grins as he reaches over and opens the door for her. âMake it up to me by giving me a signed album.â
âCareful, thatâs how other artists end up taking advantage of you,â Ellie warns with a playful smile before she steps out of the door and looks at him a little apprehensively. âOur fake relationship is going to start in three days. Are you ready?â
âI am,â Logan says honestly, maybe even a little excitedly. âI doubt anyoneâs going to be surprised though.â
âThatâs your fault, I told you to be subtle,â Ellie chuckles softly before she turns to leave. She looks over her shoulder and gives him a small smile. âGoodnight Logan.â
âGoodnight Ellie. Message me when you get home.â
Elli gives him a small wave goodbye and watches her carefully to make sure she gets to the elevators without the any problems. When the elevator closes, he closes the front door and presses his forehead against the wooden surface. He squeezes his eyes shut and runs through everything that happened so far.
He groans a little when he realizes how close he was to kissing her after he finished singing his song. If he was a weaker man, he wouldâve done it. But she already set her boundaries. No kissing, hugging or touchingâunless itâs in public. And heâs going to keep that promise.
Although, embarrassingly, heâs already running through the best date spots for their first official date as a fake couple.
A date, heâs hoping, will end with a kiss.
~*~
âEllie! Come here!â
Ellie turns to look at the director in her chair as the make-up artist continues to touch up her make up for the music video shoot.
âComing!â Ellie replies as she stands from the chair and smooths out the orange and black jacket sheâs wearing before she makes her way to the director.
Once she reaches him, he gives a quick rundown of the scene needed for the shoot. She follows him around the set, an explosion of yellow, pastel neon and soft orange lights and dĂŠcor that mimics old 90s arcades, as he points out the different places sheâll be shooting her solo scenes. One where sheâll be inside a tube like structure, another is in front of a makeshift brick wall and the last one is a raised platform with fairy lights dotted in the background and foreground.
âWeâll shoot your parts first then we move on to Loganâs,â The director motions to where Logan is sitting in his chair having his final run through from the assistant director for his own scenes. âThe props should be in the tube.â
Ellieâs eyes light up when she turns to look at the tube structure and sure enough, there on the bottom is where a myriad of different shaped and colored candies in aesthetically pleasing glass jars wait for her. Itâs already pretty rare for her to eat anything too heavy days before a music video shooting so having the opportunity to eat on the actual shooting is a blessing sheâll never have again. Unless she titles all of her songs to something food-related.
âCan I eat it?â Ellie asks as she crawls into the center of the tube, takes the glass jars and puts it on her lap as she takes a seat. She twists open the lid and takes out a blue dice-shaped candy and holds it up to the light.
The director laughs. âJust try not to eat all of it. We start in five everyone!â
âYou okay over here?â
Ellie looks up and smiles when she sees Logan approaching her in a red and white hoodie, his white pants hugging is legs in the most distracting of ways. He reaches the tube structure and takes a seat on the entrance of the tube.
âGood, you?â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Logan smiles as he motions to run his hand through his hair before he stops himself when he remembers that his hairstylist has already spent hours on his hair.
âReady to eat something, Iâm hungry.â
Ellie grins as she offers him the candy sheâs holding. âWant a bite then?â
Logan raises an eyebrow before he leans forward and takes the candy between his teeth, his eyes never leaving hers as his lips touch the tips of her fingers.
Ellie is immensely thankful to her makeup artist for making her makeup just a little thicker today so it can survive the harsh lights. It turns out it has a dual purpose todayâsurvive the lights and hide away the blush on her cheeks.
âDelicious,â Logan comments with a cheeky smile as he runs his thumb over his bottom lip. âSave some for me later.â
Ellie doesnât have time to reply, not that she had any coherent words to reply with, when the director calls out for the first take. Logan stands from where heâs sitting and gives her a little thumbs up before he walks out of the frame of shoot.
Ellie takes a minute to get her beating heart to settle before she turns to the camera, her demeanor already changing, as she hears Candy playing in the background.
âAnd action!â
~*~
âGood job Ellie, letâs take a five minute break and reset,â The director calls out as Ellie hops off of the platform.
Just as sheâs about to go back to her seat somewhere behind the cameras, Logan intercepts her and offers her a water bottle. She smiles gratefully and drinks almost half of the bottle. Maybe being under the lights and nibbling on candy for forty minutes made her more dehydrated than she thought.
âWant me to get you another one?â Logan chuckles as she shakes her head no.
âIâm good for now,â Ellie twists the bottle cap close and hands it back to him. âReady for our shoot?â
âYeah,â Loganâs eyes flit to somewhere over her shoulder and he moves to her side, wraps an arm around her waist and guides her away a little. âCareful, thereâs a camera behind you.â
âHuh? Oh thanks,â Ellie looks behind her just as she sees the huge black device hovering near where she had been standing. A memory comes to her and she laughs a little. âEver hit your head on this?â
Logan winces at the thought and shakes his head no.
âI did, when I was shooting Easy,â Ellie chuckles as she unconsciously leans into him, his hand warming up the skin on her waist. âJust as I was really feeling the music, I turn to the side and bam! The makeup team had to do some magic to hide the red bump here.â
Ellie points to her right temple and Logan snickers as he gazes into her eyes with a soft smile, giving her waist a reassuring small squeeze. âIâll make sure we wonât get a repeat of that then.â
âThen youâre doing a fantastic job so far,â Ellie moves closer to him, the space between them nonexistent, and somewhere in the back of her mindâsheâs aware that she shouldnât be this close to him even if everyone knows that theyâre âdatingâ.
âLogan and Ellie! Letâs start,â The directors voice booms around the space of the studio and the spell theyâve trapped themselves in breaks. Ellie is the first to move a little away from his hold and Logan, reluctantly, lets his arm fall away from her waist. When heâs no longer in her space, he can already feel the rush of cold air that envelopes him.
âMake sure you donât get left behind,â Ellie comments as she looks up at him with a teasing smile.
Logan smiles and puts his hands in his pockets, the fire in her eyes both inspiring and addicting.
âNever troublemaker.â
~*~
Ellie takes a sip from her glass of wine, her back against the headboard of her bed, as she crosses her ankles and goes through the selection of movies on her TV for her next movie to watch. After the music video shoot that ran for close to three hours, she was finally able to relax for the rest of the day and sheâs been spending it catching up on movies sheâs wanted to watch for awhile. Although she wanted to hang out with Logan after the shoot, he had to quickly get to an interview with a popular podcast channel on PlayMe.
After she picks one from the thriller category, she blindly pats around for her phone on the bed. She goes through her Pictagram account and lazily scrolls through her timeline as the opening scene of the movie fills the silence of her bedroom. Since theyâve announced their relationship (with a cringy couples pose pic that had them laughing and wheezing the first few takes), most of her timeline has been full of their fans congratulating them and making compilation videos of whatever little interaction they had shown in public. Ellie doesnât want to admit it out loud but she really does enjoy seeing people so happily supporting the both of them. In her past relationships, most of her fans and friends disapproved of her choice (with good reason too) but with Logan, all sheâs getting is love and support.
Itâs painful for her to admit it but Logan is just that good of a guy and he really is the Cadence to Ellie.
Ellie frowns a little at the idea that sheâs the Raleigh of their relationship.
!!!!!!!! El, watch this!
Ellieâs eyebrows furrow a little when she sees PlayMe link that Riya, her closest friend even before she became an artist, has sent her. She pauses the movie and places her glass of wine on her nightstand when she sees the thumbnail of the video. She can already tell that itâs Logan sitting in a podcast room and if she isnât mistaken, itâs probably the interview he had to quickly run to after their shooting.
You sure this is all fake?
Ellieâs eyes widen a Riyaâs message before she quickly locates her earphones, plugs it in and plays the video. It starts off innocently enough, just going through Loganâs music history and talking about his most popular songs. Then it delves into Candy and, naturally, to her.
âSo, Candy and Ellie. Whatâs that like?â
Logan chuckles a little, a soft smile pulling on his lips. âWhich one do you want me to talk about? Depending on how much time we have left, I donât think we can get to both.â
The hosts laughs. âEllie of course!â
âYeah Ellie!â His co-host chimes in. âWhatâs it like working with her?â
âAmazing,â Logan grins as he leans back on his seat. âSheâs passionate about her work. She doesnât take any of my crap either.â
âAnd you guys are dating now! Whatâs that like?â
âItâsâŚâ Logan pauses a little, a soft smile tugging on his lips. âSurreal you know? I mean dating your idol is probably number one on the list of things that doesnât happen to guys like me.â
âI bet Ellie is just as lucky,â The co-host laughs.
âNah, Iâm the lucky one,â Loganâs voice drops down to something soft, something honest. âSheâs sweetâŚway too sweet for someone like me. She knows how to have fun too and itâs never boring when Iâm with her...it kinda feels like home sometimes.â
The host whistles. âWrite her a song while youâre at it.â
Logan laughs. âTold you Iâd only have time to talk about one.â
âIf Ellie is listening inâhi Ellie!âwhat would you like to say to her?â
âWhereâs the cameraâoh there,â Logan smiles handsomely directly to the camera, his brown eyes sparkling with amusement and affection. âMiss you already troublemaker. Letâs reschedule that date night already.â
The whole room dissolves into awws and Ellie touches her cheek, feeling the warmth of her blush heating up her palm. She doesnât even get the time to properly process what she just saw when Riya sends her a flood of messages.
Did you see it? El tell me youâve seen it. Was he really faking it? And why does he call you troublemaker? El!!! Reply already!!!
Calm down Riya! I just finished watching it.
Cool. Thoughts?
So many. Ellie probably has enough thoughts in her head to last her for the rest of the week. But how is she able to properly articulate all of them without giving away her crush for Logan? Nobody knows about itânot even Raleigh and Cadence, the two people she shares everything with.
I thinkâŚmaybe it isnât all fake?
I knew it! I freaking knew it! The way he looked at the camera? The things he said? Sorry but your boyfriend is hot El.
She wants to correct Riya. That Logan isnât her boyfriend but rather her fake boyfriend but surprisingly, giddily, she doesnât. So she immerses herself a little in the fantasy, in the belief that maybe there really is something more to them than just their fake relationship.
It wonât hurt right? After all, this is just a little crush. A feeling she wonât allow to grow into something more. After all, she promised Raleigh that it wouldnât get to thatâhell, she promised herself.
But a crush is something small and insignificant. Something she can easily overlook and abandon when things start to get sticky.
So Ellie flops down on her bed, a wide grin on her face, as she dials Riyaâs number so they can properly gush over her extremely hot boyfriend and talk about all the things sheâs excited to explore with her very much fake but not fake relationship with Logan.

Felices Los 4 (M!Raleigh x MC)
Summary: Inspired by Malumaâs Felices Los 4. Raleigh and Cadence need some time to finally figure out exactly what they are.
Warning: Explicit language. Some references to sex.
Word Count: 3200
Si conmigo te quedas O con otro tĂş te vas No me importa un carajo Porque sĂŠ que volverĂĄs
Raleigh woke up to emptiness by his side. He grimaced as he rolled over, soaking in the fading warmth that Cadence left behind when she awoke at the break of dawn and snuck out of his hotel room before they got caught. Two months after the âbreak upâ and he still could not stay away from her. He didnât mind the risks, after all hooking up adds to his bad boy persona. But if Cadence got caught, well her image would be ruined. This was all this was right? Hooking up. He was used to sleeping around, not remembering all the names of the women he had been with, but for a while now the only woman on his mind and in his sheets was Cadence Dorian. God, did he wish things were different.
He grimaced as he reached the bedside, hundreds of text filling the screen. At the top was one from
CadenceâHad a good time last night, sorry I didnât wake you up. You just looked too cute sleeping ;)â His cheeks warmed as he smiled.
He texted back, âDonât have too much fun with your bfâ To which she shot back,
âHopefully Jaylen âNotice me Raleighâ Riaz doesnât get on your nerves too muchâ
He rolled his eyes groaning as he remembered that his new girlfriend was none other than Jaylen Riaz. Boy was she annoying. The only thing he liked about that woman was her singing voice, but by now even that annoyed him.
Jaylen squealed as she lept into Raleigh arms outside the hotel, the bright flashing lights making him grimace. Or maybe she was. On cue he pulled her in for a deep kiss. He pulled away, putting on his sunglasses as Jaylen looped her arm with his and walked through with a flashing smile.
âRaleigh how do you feel about Cadence making it official with her One in a Million mentor Avery Wilshire!â
Raleigh sneered, about to answer when Jaylen interrupted, âWell you know Iâm the winner here.â She let out a giggle and snuggled against Raleigh who forced a smirk as he winked at the cameras through his glasses.
âJaylen how do you feel about being Raleighâs sloppy seconds?â Raleigh had to stop himself from laughing as a look of shock spread across Jaylenâs face. Of course it was his favorite pap. She looked at Raleigh for defense who sighed and rolled her eyes, âHow does Avery feel about being Cadenceâs sloppy seconds? Donât be sexist.â
Frankly he did not like that Avery was Cadenceâs rebound. Raleigh was not one to get jealous, but there was a part of him who knew that Avery would be a better match for Cadence. He swore there wasnât a single bad cell in that manâs body, except that maybe he was too nice. But maybe there was something that Cadence didnât see in Avery, because nearly every night she was in Raleighâs bed. Raleigh swore that by the time these relationships passed they would get together, and he would do things right. But life had other plans as time went on, and he found his bed getting colder more often.
It started with Cadenceâs tour and Raleighâs Vegas residency. Raleigh was practically stuck in a place that was made for him, while Avery could basically tail and support Cadence.
One night he found himself texting, âI miss you, come back to me. Wish I was with you.â But he deleted it quickly and instead sent,
Raleigh: âHowâs Parisâ
Cadence: âGorgeous, everything Iâve ever dreamed.â Raleigh turned on his side, grimacing as he tortured himself over not being there.
âCall me.â I miss you
âCanât Avery is taking me on a date on the Eiffel Towerâ
âHow clichĂŠâ
She didnât respond. Figures, she must have been falling deeply in love with that Ken doll of a boyfriend.
Raleigh sat up, reaching for the bottle of bourbon next to his bedside and taking a swig of it. There wasnât a label for him and Cadence, hell theyâve never even said âI love youâ to each other. He knew that she had her needs too, and he couldnât hold her back. The world is a lonely place for people like them, and he was sure that she had probably hooked up with Avery a few times.
He grimaced at the thought of this, and took a longer swig of the bourbon before slamming it down and grabbing his phone. He checked to see if Cadence responded. She didnât. Instead he scrolled down to Jaylen sending a rather regrettable text now that he thought of it, but she was in town and they were still fake dating.
âCome over.â He typed, suddenly not caring that he disliked every fiber in her being just for one escape.
He should have known better than to give Jaylen attention. They were at the Grammys and of course they were seated next to Cadence and Avery for the drama. Cadence grinned over at him, and he couldnât help but smile to as he went to say hi, when Jaylen interrupted him.
Grinning, she grabbed Cadence and squealed, âI donât see why you broke up with Raleigh, Cadence! I mean he is justâŚintoxicating.â Avery cringed behind Cadence as he shot Raleigh a look. What was that for? He wasnât doing anything wrong.
Cadence forced a smile, before saying shakily, âTrust me, I know, but uh good luck.â She gave Raleigh a prying glance before softly pushing Avery to sit on her other side, creating a wall between her and Jaylen.
How could she be mad at him? While she was doing worse things with Avery. They were backstage, about to present with Cadence Best Rap album. She was silent as she stared ahead. He reached out touch her, âCadence?â
âDid you sleep with her?â she said coolly, still not looking at him.
âWhat? Hello to you too.â
âAnswer me Raleigh.â
âSleep with who?â
âDonât play dumb. Jaylen.â
Raleigh took in a deep breath, âYes.â
âFor how long?â
âWell, geez do you want me to give you a whole report?â Raleigh chuckled as Cadence shot him an icy glare. âWhat donât act like you havenât slept around too?â Cadence scoffed as she rolled her eyes, âWith who? Shane who still hates me? Or Avery? I havenât in fact, not yet.â
âWhy are you so twisted then?â
âBecause you hate Jaylen!â And you love me, she thought. She guessed not.
âThere is such a thing as hate sex you know. Besides it means nothing to me. Also weâre not even a thingâŚâ Raleigh trailed off as he saw tears well up in Cadenceâs eyes.
Maybe she was wrong about everything, maybe what they had was only a spark. She choked on her tears, trying hold them back in order to not ruin her make up. He reached for her, and she numbly pushed him off. Walking towards the stage, leaving him trailing behind her. Maybe she should have known better to think that what theyâve had could be love. She read the words on the teleprompter with a forced smile, not turning to Raleigh when the fake banter came. She knew she looked stiff. She knew this was going to spin out as an awkward ex encounter in the papers. She didnât care anymore.
When they went back stage she pushed past him, gripping her gown as she scurried off, away from everything, away from all of the fake surrounding them.
Avery found her crying in some diner that night, and she let him comfort her that night.
âYou know heâs no good for you.â Avery said as he wrapped an arm around her waist as they laid in bed together.
âI just thought that what we had was real.â Cadence replied as she tried to focus on the man in front of her. But she couldnât. She knew that if she could choose she would be with Raleigh now, but she had to give Avery a chance.
âItâs hard to find whatâs real in this industry thatâs why I love you.â Avery said, not minding that that word slipped out of his mouth. Cadence didnât know what to say, so instead she pulled him in for a kiss.
Two months passed by, and Raleigh was now sitting up in bed, Jaylen snoring soundly as he grabbed his phone. He went to his old messages and looked at Cadenceâs name sorrowfully. Why does he ache like this? Itâs been two months and he still misses her, still yearns for her to just say hi to him. Unbeknownst to him Cadence was thinking the same thing,
Finally he texted, âI miss you, can we talk?â
20 minutes passed and finally responded, âNo.â
âThen why did you respond.â
âBecause I wanted to annoy you.â
âFunny, but seriously?â
âKâ
âCadence, I want you to know that I canât stop thinking about you. I care about you in so many ways. And I understand if you are falling for Avery, heâs a good guy. Iâm just grateful to be that spiteful yet friendly fake ex in your life. Just let me back in.â Raleigh texted, his heart beating in his throat. Was he in love with her. She responded, âI overreacted, I know I wasnât fair about you and Jaylen. I just couldnât help but feel jealous at the time. But Averyâs been good to me, and Jaylenâs been trying for you. It wouldnât be fair for either of them to go back to what we were doing.â
Fuck everybody else Raleigh almost typed, but instead he replied, âI know, just let me be there for you.â I love you. He was desperate, he wanted her, he needed her.
âMeet me for coffee at 9.â
Raleigh and Jaylen were scheduled for an late night interview, while Avery was going to take Cadence out on a date that would change her life.
Cadence giggled as Avery lead her down the beach. âI still donât understand where weâre going.â She adored Avery, she really did. He made her feel safe.
âWeâll get there when we get there now come along.â He lead to a secluded spot, where there were candles all around and a white blanket. âSex on the beach? Niceâ
Avery rolled his eyes as he pulled her towards him, âNo that comes later.â he winked. In one fluid motion he grabbed her hand and knelt on the ground. Hopefully Raleighâs advice will pull through.
âCadence Dorian, the way you make me feel is the realest Iâve in a long time. Youâre my muse, my everything. And these past few months have been far from fake. There is not one thing in the world that holds me back from asking youâŚwill you marry me?â
Raleigh straightened himself out as he sauntered onto the couch with Jaylen next to him for Leland St. James. He smirked at the cameras, trying not to think about Cadenceâs important night. Of course he knew, he helped Avery. Didnât mean he hated every single bit of it.
He tuned out most of the monologue until Leland asked, âNow, Raleigh would you say things are getting pretty serious between you and Jaylen? Could we be looking at a possible Mrs. Carrera?â
Raleigh chuckled shaking his head while Jaylen elbowed his side and said with a smile, âWell I think things are pretty serious, right babe?â Raleigh just nodded and said, âMight keep this one for a while.â
âYes well it has been a while. I mean this is your longest girlfriend! Come on put a ring on it.â Jaylen blushed, giggling as she cuddled next to Raleigh.
âSo Jaylen Iâve heard youâve been working on a new album. Give us all the details.â
Jaylen smiled and said, âWell, I wanted to take a more romantic approach.â She did not write a single word in that album.
âAre we getting a collab?â
âWell I guess youâll just have to find out.â
âAnyway, on to the juicy stuff,â said Leland, âJaylen how do you feel about Cadenceâs romance with former mentor Avery Wilshere?â
Jaylen rolled her eyes and said with a smirk, âWe all know Cadence is wellâŚA temptress. I mean she seduced Raleigh, and now sheâs returning the favor to Avery. Simple as that. Nothing real like me and Raleigh have. Besides, had she not used herâŚskillsâŚI would have won, right Raleigh.â
Raleigh grimaced. He knew this was coming, and he knew what he had to say. He knew he had to bash Cadenceâs image in order to boost his. And yet he sat there quietly as Jaylen and Leland looked at him expectantly.
âNo.â
Cadence said as her heart sake to her stomach. She knew she loved Avery in some way, but not like this. Averyâs faced dropped as he stood up, and looking at her face he understood. She didnât love him the way he wanted to see it.
âAvery Iâm sorry, I love you so much, but Iâm not sureâŚâ Cadence trailed off as she searched for anything in Averyâs face. Betrayal, hurt, sorrow, anything.
Avery wished she could finish that sentenced. He wanted to hear âIâm not sure if Iâm ready.â That would have given him hope. No he was sure she the end would be âIâm not sure if Iâm in love with you that way.â
âYou donât have to finish,â Avery said softly as he cupped her face. She looked up, tears brimming her eyes. She wished she could say yes. She wished she was in love with him like he was in love with her.
âIâm sorry.â She choked out.
âHey, itâs okay I get it. Itâs not my first heart break.â Well, actually this heart break is the one that hurts the most.
âNo, I want to love you, I want to ride off with you into the sunset and get married and live this fantasy but,â
âBut that isnât your story.â Avery cooed as he tried to focus his energy on comforting the woman that he loved that didnât love him back. âI get it Cadence. Iâm just grateful I threw my hat in the rink for youâŚBut Raleigh is hard to get through.â
Cadence looked up in shock. How did he know? Avery shook his head. Of course he knew.
She wiped her tears away, âI know. But I want to fight for him. I donât care if I have to go through Fiona, if I have to find a new label, or if I have pry Jaylen Riaz off of him. Thatâs what you do, you fight for people you love.â
Avery nodded backing away, âWell, go get him then.â I hope he fights for you to.
âLike now?â
âI mean, I kind of need my own heart break right now?â
âOh, yeah sorryâŚAre you going to be okay?â
âNothing a few break up songs wonât fix. I think youâve inspired me.â He chuckled. Cadence gave him a quick peck on the cheek, âThank you Avery.â She scurried off, and Avery finally allowed himself to break when she was out of sight.
âNo,â Raleigh repeated as he glared over at Leland and Jaylen pulling himself from Jaylen in disgust. The studio fell silent.
âIâm sorry?â Leland started as Jaylen hissed, âBabe?â
âNo, I refused to partake in this stupid media circus. And refuse to drag Cadence Dorian,â Raleigh stood up. âActually if anything that is fake it is this stupid relationship between this girl and me. I mean itâs like some deity had it out there for me and decided to pair me up with the most annoying girl on the planet. I swear, every time you open your mouth I want to vomit. No offenseâ Jaylen looked up at him in shock while Leland looked straight into the camera. No way he wasnât going to stop filming. He was capturing a Carrera break down.
âFuck this, fuck all of you!â Raleigh barked as he pointed his finger at the room. âCadence Dorian is the realest person in the industry, she is able to write amazing songs, unlike this girl who probably hasnât lifted a single pen in her life. She is a kind soul, who just wants to sing. Isnât that enough for you people? Do you want me to drag her into the mud? Because I canât. And I refuse to be anyoneâs puppet. To tell the truth all of my relationships have been fake. But even when Cadence and I were faking it felt real. You want me to judge her and Averyâs relationship I canât. I know Avery Wilshere is a good guy who would hold himself back when he was her mentor. I know that any guy Cadence is forced to be with is going to fall in love with her like I have.â That was it, he knew it all along, he was still in love with Cadence.
âAnd you know what? Maybe instead wasting your lives admiring stupid celebrities like us why donât youââ the show cut off before Raleigh used all of his swear words.
He knew he was in trouble, he knew that this public breakdown could be spun so many different ways. Fiona chewed him out as he was escorted off stage but he didnât care. For the first time in his life, he felt real with himself.
Cadence woke up that morning to a pap pick of her and Avery with the caption, âTrouble in Paradise? Cadence Dorian rejects Avery Wilshereâs proposal, living heartthrob in the dust.â That was fair. What she didnât expect to see was the side headline, âRaleigh Carrera has a meltdown on TV. Was it drugs? Alcohol? Or something else?â This intrigued her and she went straight to the source and watched Lelandâs show.
Cadence: âCan we talk?â
Raleigh: âHey look weâre headline buddies.â
Raleigh: âSure. Iâll head to your placeâ
Within minutes he was at her door, and she pulled him inside. âYouâre an idiot.â
âI know.â
âYou might have ruined your career.â
âI know, and you rejected the perfect man.â
âI know. But he wasnât for me.â
âThen who is perfect enough for you,â Raleigh said he pulled in closer, his hand softly touching her elbow as he tried to make eye contact instead of looking at the lips he missed so much.
âI donât know, might be a bad boy Puerto Rican who would risk it all to defend me honor.â Cadence smirked as she edged closer to him.
Raleighâs breath caught in his throat, and he finally said softly, âI love you Cadence Dorian, always have. Always will. But Iâm not good for you or your image.â
âAnd I love you Raleigh Carrera. And you know both know that the whole world could eat our--â she was cut off as she was pulled by him into a long, hungry kiss. He wrapped his arms around, holding her close, absorbing her warmth and taking in the beautiful scent of her hair.

After spending the last couple of weeks so embarrassed I started to wonder if you could actually die from embarrassment, I welcomed the distraction my super hot boyfriend and friends gave me. They'd come and picked me up at my old apartment after Ellis shipped me back to this hellhole.      Â
I never thought I'd have to see it again honestly, and being here again was like being punched in the face by reality. I couldn't believe that everything I'd worked my entire life for had come crashing down around me because I'd made just one poor choice. Granted, it was a really, really poor choice. Ugh. I could feel my cheeks getting hot just thinking about how I'd tackled Jaylen to the ground in front of basically the entire world. This had shot right to the top of my list of worst moments ever. Â Â Â Â Â Â
Thinking back on today I feel grateful, though. Even though my career is basically a dumpster fire at this point, I have managed to make some really great friends over the past couple of months. My once out of reach childhood crush Avery is one of my best friends. He's always there for me and his optimism is contagious. He was the first person to tell me everything was going to be okay when I'd peeled myself up off the floor of the stage and realized what I'd done.  Â
People have started to wonder about my relationship with Avery, but the truth? Once I got to know him and met a certain dark, broody troublemaker Avery was pretty much tossed into the friend zone. I can't help myself, I'm a sucker for a cocky asshole with a soft spot just for me. Wouldn't you be? Â Â Â Â Â Â
Sure, our relationship had started out fake but from the first minute I met Raleigh, I felt a spark I'd never felt before. He hadn't said it outright, but I knew he felt it, too. Â In fact, finally at that shitty awards show I'd been able to be out in the open about my feelings for Raleigh for the first time ever. Talk about a bittersweet night. Â Â Â Â Â Â
My friends showing up on my door couldn't have come at a better time. I needed the distraction desperately from my self pity and wallowing. It wouldn't do my image or career any good to gain an extra ten pounds from all the junk food I'd been using to shove down my feelings. I don't know that I'd ever agreed to anything as fast as I'd agreed to head to Avery's new lakeside retreat.      Â
We'd had so much fun screwing around on the lake all day that I hadn't even thought about how I'd lost a shit ton of followers (yes, that's a legitimate unit of measurement) or how I'd had to disguise myself in a banana costume just to avoid detection by the press. Apparently this is just my life now, at least until this mess blows over. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
After a day on the lake, Raleigh and I took some private time to ourselves. We'd lost ourselves in each other for the past couple of hours and now we were cocooned under a blanket on the sandy shores of the lake, just the two of us in our own private little world.     Â
I reached out and grabbed Raleigh's hand, lacing my fingers through his, chuckling softly. "I still can't believe you flew a drone indoors just to take the heat off of me. I'm impressed." Â Â Â Â Â Â
He laughed. "It wasn't that much of a sacrifice, estrella. I told you I'd do anything for you." Â Â Â Â Â Â
And he had. I could always count on Raleigh to be there when it really counted. I felt his fingers brush a strand of hair off of my forehead, gently tucking it behind my ear before he leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to my lips. I love it when he kisses me gently like that. It's like he lets me see a side of him that no one else gets to and it makes me feel special, like we're the only two people that exist in the world. Â Â Â Â Â Â
Sighing, I laid back and looked up at the stars. They were really bright tonight without all the city lights around to dim their shine. "I just wish this would blow over, that I could take it back or, I don't know, that everything could go back to how it was just before that moment. I don't want it to define me forever." Â Â Â Â Â Â
"Babe, it's always going to be there but you can shift the narrative whenever you want," he said. Â Â Â Â Â Â
"Shift the narrative how? Ellis doesn't want me in New York and there's not a lot I can do from here, outside of sending some creepy fans pictures of my feet."Â Â Â Â Â
Raleigh laughed and I looked up at him, watching his face light up. God, he was gorgeous. I know, I know. Men are supposed to be handsome or rugged or some other very manly world, and he is all of those things, too, but he's just stunningly beautiful. The tattoos snaking up and down his arms and climbing up his neck just make him even more delicious to me. I often find myself fantasizing about tracing every last line of black ink on his body with my tongue.
Ahem, anyway...      Â
"I know you're going to think I'm crazy but I've been thinking about this for a while," Raleigh said, his brown eyes staring into mine with an intensity I don't think I've ever seen him have before. "I don't want you to think this is just because of what happened but you want to change what everyone's focused on, right?" Â Â Â Â Â Â
"Right," I said cautiously, wondering what he's getting at. "What are you planning, Carrera?" Â Â Â Â Â Â
"I think we should get married." Â Â Â Â Â Â
I could feel my eyes get wide, practically bugging out of my head. It probably wasn't a good look but I couldn't help it. My mouth fell open in shock and I bet I looked really sexy at that moment. Not. Had I heard him right? Not that I hadn't imagined walking down the aisle with Raleigh waiting at the end more times than I could count or anything. Still, was this really what playboy Raleigh Carrera wanted? Â Â Â Â Â Â
"Are you serious? I figured you'd never want to settle down." Â Â Â Â Â Â
I could feel him shrug his shoulder. "I never wanted to until I met you. When I'm with you, it's almost like I'm missing you already even when we're together. No amount of time with you is ever enough, Cadence. I've been thinking about this for a while actually, but it felt like it might be too soon and I didn't want to freak you out. But we could do this, and then all anybody would be talking about is our wedding. We could even leak pictures to the press." Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
I could hear the hope in his voice and it made my chest constrict with happiness. I can't believe this is my life. Â "You get that if we do this it's forever, right? My grandparents were married for 50 years and that's the kind of life and love I want. I'm not going to settle for less even if we have pretty unconventional lives. Do you think you're up for that?" Â Â Â Â Â Â
He pulled my hand up to his mouth before softly kissing me on the knuckles and then he placed our interlaced hands over his heart. I could feel his heartbeat under my skin. He searched my eyes with his, never once blinking. "I want to do this with you, estrella. It's not just a publicity stunt for me. Sure, that's an added benefit of the timing, but I want to wake up next to you every morning. I want to have babies with you. I want to build our careers together and I want to grow old together. I can't imagine going through this life with anyone but you. Say yes. Marry me." Â Â Â Â Â Â
Well, shit. How could I say no to that? Â Â Â Â Â Â
I could feel my heart racing almost as if it was trying to jump out of my chest because I knew what I was going to say. There wasn't even a question. Â Â Â Â Â Â
In a whisper, I said the one word that would change my life forever.
"Yes."

Nobody Knows The Whole TruthÂ
Everyone knew Cadence Dorian, the midwestern sweetheart, had a way with words. Not only did her debut album go certified platinum, but all the songs she ghostwrote topped the charts.Â
Everyone knew of Raleigh Carrera. They knew his image, his voice, his affinity for danger and property damage. To the world, Raleigh Carrera was a certified bad boy.Â
Everything everyone knew was only half of the truth.Â
Nobody knew who Raleigh and Cadence were when they were together. When all they wanted is to share a peaceful dinner, hold hands, and have Raleigh carry her at the end of the night when her heels got too painful.
In public, they were the poster couple for on-and-off, toxic lovers. Raleigh is the flirt; sizing up opportunity after opportunity, and drinking a little too much. Cadence is the goody-two-shoes keeping him on a leash, and severing it once he gets too rowdy.Â
Every public encounter between them has a layer of tension implied.Â
After weeks apart, they ran into one another at the MoDA Gala. Their very public breakup stunt still very fresh in the public psyche.Â
They bumped into one another on the red carpet - literally. Raleigh turned to avoid a few reporters and knocked into Cadence posing for photos. It had the potential to be a PR nightmare.Â
The crowd gasped.Â
The pair just looked at one another as Raleigh went to steady her. His hands firmly on her body and thousands of pairs of eyes watching their every move as he leaned over;Â
âYou look beautiful,â he whispered in her ear.Â
Cadence bit the inside of her lip, schooling her features from the bright smile threatening to oust them. Raleigh pulled away all too soon for her liking. But not soon enough for them to not get throngs of questions thrown at them;Â
âAre you getting back together?â âHave you worked through your issues?â âWill you be making music together in the future?â âHow do you really feel about the break up?â âCan we get a picture together for the fans.âÂ
The evening droned on and on and became more about business than the charity theyâre here to support. There were only so many networking and industry conversations Cadence could take. And none of them were quite as endurable without Raleigh by her side.Â
The worst part of the evening by far was their publicists making sure they werenât seated at the same table, keeping them apart for appearances sake.Â
Eventually Cadence needed a breather, a healthy dose of reality. So she made a sneaky decision. As no phones were allowed at the gala, she wrote on a napkin and whisked across the room to slip it under his champagne flute.Â
Then she waited in the shadows of a roped off area. Â
âFancy seeing you here,â she said with a flirty smirk as Raleigh rounded the corner.Â
âThis is bold,â he commented with his signature smirk. âWhatâre you gonna do with me now that you have me alone?â
âMurder sounds good. But be a dear and please keep your blood to yourself. This is a Zadie Couture original.âÂ
He let out a laugh and crossed the distance. His hands reaching out to wrap around her waist before kissing her lightly, yet with the force of all their bottled up feelings.Â
âHow was the rest of tour?â he asked when they broke apart. Â
Her face lit up and Raleighâs heart skipped a beat. âAmazing! I canât believe I sold out Troubadour!â Her fingers trailed to tangle in the strands at the back of his neck, âMissed you though.âÂ
âKnew you could do it, kid.â He pressed a sweet peck to the tip of her nose.Â
Cadence smiled then leaned into him so that their lips met once more. Â
When they pulled away they gave a knowing look.Â
âLetâs go home.âÂ
They slipped out of the event one at a time. Hank drove Cadence home and Raleigh called an Uber. They entered their building through separate entrances - her through the front door and him through the parking garage.Â
They met back up in the elevator where no one but building security could see them together. Â
Once they were safely home, Raleigh wasted no time in freeing Cadence from the confines of her corset.Â
âOh sweet oxygen!â she sung as the dress fell to the floor and she could finally take long, deep breaths. All she wanted was the sweet comforts of home. âWhereâs my onesie?âÂ
âUnder the pillows where you left it,â he said matter-of-factly as he began stripping off his suit. Â
âYou didnât wash it!?â Â
âNo,â Raleigh shrugged, âWhy would I?â Â
She looked at him, dumbfounded, âIâve been gone for three weeks.âÂ
How did he not think to wash the dirty clothes? She thought to herself.Â
Their eyes met as he told her, âIt smells like you.âÂ

More Thirst Tweets
Avery vs Raleigh x MC
NSFWish
A/N: I think when people asked for more thirst tweets, they meant more open heart thirst tweets, but I wanted Platinum thirst tweets, so here we are.
Avery Wilshire
âHello, my name is Avery Wilshire, and Iâm here at ClickIt today to read thirst tweets from some of my wonderful fans. And to promo my upcoming world tour with the incomparable Cadence Dorian, tickets available next week.â Avery smiles charmingly into the camera, and teenage girls across the world swoon.
He digs into the bowl of printed out tweets a star struck production assistant placed in front of him just before they started filming.
âAvery Wilshire.....â, the smile slowly falls from his face. âcould punch me in the face, and then run me over with his car, and I would say thank you daddy. I love him so much.â Avery looks up into the camera.
âLove, Iâm flattered, but donât let anyone treat you like that. You deserved to be worshipped. And I love you too.â He smiles again, grabbing another tweet.
â......Avery Wilshire, please choke me.â The pop star sighs, just a little despondently.
Raleigh Carrera
âHey, Iâm Raleigh Carrera. My new album comes out this Friday, 12 PM East Coast time. So, Iâm here at ClickIt reading thirst tweets so youâll buy my album. Oh, and donât forget to get your tickets to Avery and Cadence, the World Tour.â Raleigh introduces, and promotes, himself.
And of course he promotes his favorite girl too. He shoots a flirty smile to Cadence, whoâs sitting just off camera. She grins back.
Raleigh digs into the bowl, pulling a tweet from the bottom. He unfurls the paper with gravitas, clearing his throat. âI donât care that @RaleighCarrera isnât single. Iâm willing to do the dirtiest sexual stuff imaginable to lure him to me. Heâs so hot I have zero boundaries.â Raleigh chuckles as Cadence quietly seethes. He glances into the camera, tossing a flirty wink thatâs sure to get the fansâ hearts racing. âIâm flattered, @Ho4Carrera.â
He opens another tweet, ignoring how Cadence is glowering at him. Sheâs so fun to rile up. âI want to lick every last one of Raleighâs tattoos. Hmm, that one was pretty tame. Letâs see if we can find something more...click bait-y for your video.â He quips to the production staff.
He skims a couple before settling on one with a broad grin. âAah, this is the one. @SunsetSkateparkOGGroupee says, I would let Raleigh Carrera stick his....in my.....and then Iâd.....â ClickIt was forced to censor a bunch of words here, and everyone in the studio besides Raleigh is blushing furiously as he reads, completely nonplussed. âAnd when I could move again, Iâd bow down and thank him.â Raleigh concludes.
He looks into the camera with a big grin. âThanks doll.â
âAlright, I think thatâs enough of that.â Cadence interrupts. She forcefully takes the bowl from him, and Raleigh has to stop himself from laughing. Sheâs so cute when sheâs murderously jealous.

you and me forever
m!Raleigh x mc (Candace Dorian)
1.2k wordsÂ
grammy award nominations come out, and there are some suprises
a/n: a couple of things, one I used the grammys here because in my mind in the platinum universe the grammys are a real thing and the vinyls are like the american music awards if that makes any sense and two making up album titles and song titles has turned out to be just as hard as titling fics so apologies in advanceÂ
This has to be the most painfully long livestream of all time. As she watches people appear on screen and name off categories and those nominated, she realizes just how long sheâs taken for granted just being able to search the nominations after the stream has already taken place. Currently the nominees for best Jazz album are being announced, a respectable category of course but one that the announcer is taking his precious time talking about. The entire thing is very painful, not to mention the fact that Raleigh is a nervous wreck.Â
Heâs not showing it of course, because heâs not the kind of person to sit on the edge of his seat and clench his teeth until they announce his name. Heâs spent so long building his up âcool guyâ persona that even a possible Grammy nomination will shake it. He sits next to her on the small couch in his apartment, squeezing her hand which is how she knows that heâs a lot more nervous than she even thought he could be.Â
The room is nearly silent as the nominations come slowly rolling in. The only sounds other than the stream are Fiona in the next room, on the phone again about something that Candace can only assume sheâll start talking about as soon as this is all over. Avery, who also has a very good chance of being nominated is therefore pacing the floor behind the couch. She stops occasionally, just so that the sound of her shoes on the hardwood floor stops but eventually she starts again, most likely recognizing that this whole thing is going at a snail's pace.Â
PR people from both camps are scattered about the room, typing on phones and refreshing twitter feeds trying to get any hint of how this is going to go. Thereâs a buzz to the whole room, a kind of hum that breaks through the tense silence, the anxiety in the air is clear, and Candace would be lying if she said it wasnât getting to her just a little bit. She leans her head on Raleigh's shoulder just as another text from Shane comes in on her phone, which is sitting right next to the computer. Heâs on set shadowing a director for school, so he canât keep up with the news himself but he keeps texting her asking for updates.Â
She looks at the stream, sees that the R&B category is next and doesnât even make a move towards the phone, this is it. Sheâll update him when Raleigh gets nominated. Avery stops pacing, and glues her eyes to the screen, Fiona finally reenters the room and is suddenly transfixed as well and everything seems to stop as the presenters start speaking. He isnât nominated for overall performance, which is fine because there are more categories, the stream keeps going and everything is suddenly speeding up.
âThe nominees for best R&B song are, I see you by Raleigh Carrera and Candance Dorian,âÂ
Nobody moves, nobody says anything, everyone just lets the stream continue without saying a word. Raleigh is still squeezing Candaceâs hand even though as of this moment they are both Grammy nominated songwriters, but he wants more, and everyone in the room knows it. Finally the category comes to R&B album of the year. All the albums are announced but one, and everyone is holding their breath.Â
âThe final nominee for R&B album of the year is About Me, by Raleigh Carrera.âÂ
Cadence stares at the screen for a moment, dumbfounded, and when she turns to look at him she sees that heâs already looking at her. âDude,â She says, âYouâre a fucking grammy nominated artist.âÂ
He smiles, âSo are you.âÂ
She rolls her eyes, âYouâre entire album was nominated, this is really happening.â She hits him on the shoulder, âStop being so cool about this! This is the one time you're allowed to go batshit.âÂ
He laughs, âI think youâre the one going batshit.âÂ
One of the press people, Carly, speaks up from across the room. âSo weâre going to have to make a video later of you reacting to your nominations, because that is unusable.â Sheâs half joking but they both know there will have to be a video with both of them later.Â
âArguably I think my cursing adds authenticity to the entire situation,â Candace jokes, âBecause someone is being scarily calm about this entire thing.âÂ
Suddenly the announcer moves into the next category, pop music and a hush goes over the room again. Avery continues to pace the floor, until finally sheâs nominated for best pop performance and best pop song. Then the stream moves into the general categories, but the focus of the room isn't on those. Hums of conversation start to fill the room as Candace finally texts Shane back and immediately gets a flurry of all caps messages back, and outfits and awards performances are being discussed. Â
All of which changes the second the words, âI see you written by Raleigh Carrera, and Candace Dorian.âÂ
Candace looks up, and sees that the header on the screen is song of the year. Everyone in the room stops talking and stares at Candace and Raleigh, still seated on the couch. The two of them aren't looking at anyone else, theyâre just looking at eachother and suddenly they're kissing in the middle of the living room while everyone is looking at them while the rest of the nominations are still being read off. Itâs a little embarrassing as Candance will admit later, but getting caught up in the moment of being nominated for an amazing award with the person that you love is a kind of ecstasy that canât really be described. The kind of ecstasy that makes you make out said person in the middle of a room full of people.Â
âHow was that for a reaction video?â
âI need one thats family friendly.âÂ
The rest of the day is a blur of twitter notifications, interview requests, and phone calls from pretty much everyone they know. Near the end of the day, Candace decides to turn her phone off, and her computer and just try to take it all in without everyone else commenting on it. Sheâs more excited for Raleigh than herself, because she knows how hard heâs worked on this, and even though he wonât admit it she knows how much he wanted it.
At the end of the day, all the people have finally left the apartment, all the notifications have been turned off, and there's a comfortable silence in between the two people left. Raleigh and Candace lie in the bed, both exhausted from the day. âIâm proud of you,â She says, putting her hand on his chest.Â
He grasps it again and lets out a sigh, âWhen you said we were in this together, this was not what I had in mind.âÂ
âTo be fair, neither did I,â She smiles. âIâm sorry, I feel like the romance of it all is distracting people from your insane amount of talent.âÂ
He rolls over and just looks at her. Heâs enamored with her, like he always has been. If heâs being honest, none of this would mean as much as it does if she wasnât right there with him, telling him not to give up and reminding him that he needs to stop being in his own head. He doesnât deserve her. âI donât want to make music if itâs not with you.âÂ
She smiles and presses a brief kiss to his lips. âYou and me forever,â She says and she means it.Â
They both do.Â

avery was uncharacteristically squirrelly when she pressed him about who else was coming on the trip with them, evading her questions as best as he could while he herded her onto the plane.
âi donât want to be a third wheel to you and ascendance,â cadence insisted for what was surely the sixth or seventh time since heâd first invited her along, âor a fifth wheel once seth and florencia show up, either.â
âwould you relax?â avery said, waving the flight attendant over and practically shoving a drink into her hand as they settled into their seats across from each other, âseth and florencia are bringing someone with them, too. itâs going to be fine.â
âitâs not going to be fine if whoever they bring is a weirdo,â she pointed out, but sipped obligingly from her champagne all the same, sighing dramatically when the doors closed and the plane started to roll down the tarmac. âthen the four of you will be off doing valentineâs day things together and iâll be stuck entertaining some creep.â
âthey wouldnât just bring some creep,â avery assured her, rolling his eyes. âand even if they did, at least youâll be entertaining them in palm springs, yeah? i donât think i couldâve lasted another day below zero.â
that was true. new york had been freezing, lately, with a particularly unrelenting winter that seemed unlikely to melt into spring anytime soon, groundhog predictions be damned. as the plane took off into the air, her toes had yet to thaw out where they were like ice in her sneakers.Â
averyâs girlfriendâs vacation house in palm springs was going to be a welcome respite from the place she was desperate to get away from, even if she was going to have to spend her first valentineâs day alone there -- or, worse, with some strange guy or girl she wasnât ready to entertain.
it had been four months since her breakup with raleigh, and it wasnât like she hadnât tried to date again. she had. each of her friends had begged to be given the chance to set her up until she finally relented and subsequently regretted ever leaving her apartment -- every single miserable dinner date she went on felt like trying to walk around in the wrong size shoes, pinchy and unfamiliar and strange.
each of the people sheâd dated were perfectly nice in their own way, but they werenât raleigh. they never could be.
the realization had admittedly left her feeling a little glum. sheâd expected to be over him, by now, or at the very least, to not still be so torn up about their breakup, especially when she was the one whoâd forced his hand.
man up and make a commitment, or let me go. the words felt bitter as she recalled them, and she sighed when avery kicked her underneath the table between them, eyebrows drawing together.
âoi, none of that this weekend. this trip is going to be fun.â
âi know,â cadence said, her eyes on the window beside her. as fun as it could be, she supposed. âand i really appreciate you trying to take my mind off things, but...â
averyâs eyes softened. âyeah,â he allowed, âi get it. but i really do want you to try to have a good time. a break from new york will be good for you.â
âi hope so.â though she doubted it. if she couldnât get raleigh out of her mind when she was home, a trip across the country was unlikely to make a difference.Â
the drive to ascendanceâs from the airport was short, and after only a few minutes cadence had the pleasure of watching the two of them embrace like itâd been years since they last saw each other, kissing enthusiastically while she lingered in the foyer with her suitcase.
ascendance grinned widely at her when they broke apart, laughing a little as avery kept her wrapped in his arms, lifted up off the floor with her bare feet dangling. âhey! itâs so good to see you again. you can take any room you want, okay?â
the wet sound of kissing didnât disappear even after she rushed upstairs, dragging her suitcase down the long hallway until she could find the bedroom farthest away from the noise.Â
she shut the door behind her on an airy, sun-drenched guest bedroom draped in billowy linens, the open window looking down at the pool and sprawling backyard. palm trees decorated the property, and the sight of the view alone was enough to calm her down just a little, so that her stomach wasnât clenched into tight knots for the first time in weeks when she kicked off her shoes and sank into the bed.
her hands scrubbed across her face, rubbing at her eyes. she was makeup-free from the flight and knew sheâd need to get ready before whatever chaos she was inevitably going to be dragged into tonight, when seth and florencia and their mystery guest would get in, but just then, she was far too exhausted to move.Â
figuring that a nap wouldnât hurt, she slipped under the blankets in the sweats sheâd worn on the plane and immediately fell fast asleep.
the sun was setting when she woke up, a commotion downstairs alerting her to the fact that seth and florencia had gotten in early; she heard a champagne cork pop and cheers echo out just as she slid to the edge of the mattress and stretched, arching her back and righting her clothes where theyâd pulled out of place in her sleep.
running a hand through her messy hair, she walked out into the hallway without thinking twice about it, figuring sheâd find out the plan for the evening before she started getting ready.
cadence regretted the thought as soon as she paused at the top of the stairs. âhey, sleeping beauty!â seth crowed, throwing his hands up in the air, but she couldnât bring herself to greet him when her eyes were focused on the mop of brown hair standing just behind him, a head taller and a commanding presence sheâd recognize in any room, in any city, in any place.Â
the person seth and florencia had brought with them was raleigh.
he smiled sheepishly at her, rubbing at the back of his neck before lifting his hand in an awkward wave. âhey.â
âhey,â she said slowly, resuming her walk down the stairs as if on autopilot, even though every nerve-ending in her body was screaming at her to turn back around and go to her room and put on something hotter, damnit. if sheâd known she was going to be seeing raleigh today she would have taken the entire six hour flight in valentino haute couture and sat ramrod straight not to wrinkle it.
but she didnât, and so there she was, makeup free in sweats, dreaming of all the long, drawn-out and painful ways she was going to murder both avery and seth for blindsiding her.Â
âiâm gonna go pour drinks,â seth said decisively, and cadence only barely caught the look florencia shot her before they both turned away to tend to the champagne bottle in her hands, leaving her alone in the foyer with raleigh.Â
it had been a few months since she saw him last. they ran into each other only once after she picked up all her things from his apartment, the shoes and makeup and guitar picks and jewelry sheâd left strewn all over the place because there was no rules at raleighâs and sheâd gotten too comfortable with that. sheâd spotted him from across the room at a party she didnât want to be at and ducked out the back door before he could see her, too, walking home thirty blocks in the cold, hiccuping sobs that blew clouds of her breath into the air.
he looked more or less the same as he had in november. raleighâs hair was still pretentiously, purposefully disheveled, his clothes the rich form of messy, distressed and slouchy that looked effortlessly fashionable, with that gaudy rolex on his wrist and hints of his tattoos peeking out at the edge of his collar.
the expression on his face gave nothing away when he said, âi didnât know youâd be here.â
âwe donât have to talk,â she answered, because they didnât, and she pursed her lips and looked away just as avery and ascendance entered the house from the patio door, their clasped hands swinging between their bodies.
âoh... my god?â avery said, recovering quickly from the shock on his face, his eyebrows arching to his hairline. ascendance looked to be hiding a nervous laugh behind her hand. âraleigh, good to see you. this is... a surprise.â
âit sure is,â cadence agreed with a wide, fake smile, rage pulsing in her temples. fine -- maybe sheâd only have to kill seth.
as if on cue, seth reentered the foyer with the bottle of champagne still in his hands. âoooookay, hereâs the -- oh, hey avery -- ascendance, thanks for having us.â florencia passed out glasses while seth leaned in for welcome hugs, and cadence stood there numbly as the reality of the situation started to sink in.
she and raleigh were the other couple, the people whoâd be paired up all weekend while the rest of their friends enjoyed the time away. she was going to be stuck with the guy whoâd dumped her, on valentineâs day, and there was nothing she could do about it.
when seth stopped beside her, she made a show of wrapping him up into a bear hug, squeezing him as close and as tightly as she could. âyouâre dead to me,â cadence murmured calmly into his ear, smiling innocently again when he pulled away nervously and taking one of the waiting glasses of champagne from florenciaâs outstretched hand.
she stared at it for a second, unseeing, before lifting the glass to her lips and draining it in one go, knocking back the champagne while silently lamenting the fact that it wasnât something stronger. but there was probably no amount of alcohol in the world that was going to make this weekend feel bearable.Â
âiâm gonna go get ready,â she announced to no one, dashing back up the stairs as quickly as she dared.
ascendance found her a few minutes later in full meltdown mode, flicking frantically through the outfits she brought for something to wear to dinner.
âobviously i had no idea theyâd be bringing him,â she said, sitting on cadenceâs bed and rolling her eyes, âand i hope they didnât know avery was bringing you, or, like, what the fuck is wrong with them?â
âplease donât even get me started,â cadence sighed, âor i really think i might kill someone tonight. which dress do you think is hotter?â
she gestured frantically at the two pieces sheâd laid out over the top of her entire dumped-out suitcase, pressing the heels of her hands into her eyes until she saw stars. getting ready was going to be impossible. if she wore something too sexy it was going to look like she was trying to get back at raleigh and if she dressed too casually it was going to look like she was trying too hard to seem unaffected. the whole situation was fucked.
âi think i have something you can wear,â ascendance said slowly, âif you have the right shoes. but are you sure you want to --â
âi canât go home,â she cut in, groaning. âthatâs worse than staying. no offense -- i want to stay, i just donât want --â
âi know,â ascendance said sympathetically, âi get it. why donât you start on your makeup while i pull this dress out?â
âokay,â cadence sighed miserably, and then she was alone again, staring at the mess of clothes before her.Â
she let herself have exactly ten seconds of wallowing and dramatically lamenting why me before she squared her shoulders and sprung into action, digging her makeup bag out of the chaos covering the bed.
okay. step one -- all she had to do was get ready. youâve done this a thousand times before. just get ready, and go downstairs. no tears.
her hands shook as she sat down in front of the vanity.
fuck this. she wished dom was with her -- she would know what to do. at the very least, sheâd have a xanax to offer.
you will not believe where i am, cadence texted her, stomach squirming. part of her wouldâve given anything, just then, to be where dom was, with shane, working on whatever film they were making in whatever remote location heâd dragged her to, if only so she wouldnât have to face the disaster waiting for her downstairs.
strip club? dom answered almost immediately, her words enough to make cadence crack a genuine smile. she felt a little calmer as she quickly filled her friend in on the situation.
fuck him, was domâs advice, when she was done. ruin his life!!!! is that even a question? squeeze your tits up to your neck if you have to
thanks for the encouragement! cadence wrote back, setting her phone aside when only a sarcastic string of nonsensical emojis came back in response.
she did feel fortified, then, to make it to dinner, and got her makeup on in almost record time, a genuine smile fixed on her face when ascendance helped her get dressed and zipped her into the outfit sheâd set aside, a stunning red minidress that was equal parts short and tight, a gentle ruffle at the hem flaring out under her ass.
they were late to dinner, but it was only in the backyard; ascendance had planned for a private chef to come to the house and cook for them so they wouldnât have to worry about cameras following them around, and in hindsight, cadence could have kissed her for her forward thinking.Â
the setup was still elaborate when they made their way outside. ascendance had gone all out in planning the evening -- the table was set with candles and flowers down the length of it, the lawn lit with string lights and music playing somewhere, softly in the distance.
thankfully everyone was already at their seats when they made their way across the grass. avery pulled out the chair across from him for ascendance, and cadence took the seat at the head of the table, opposite raleigh, who was all the way down the other end and looking right at her, a crooked smile on his face and an eyebrow arched at her outfit.
she pointedly ignored him as she dropped down into her seat and picked up the bread roll waiting on her plate, squeezing ascendanceâs knee gratefully under the table when she silently passed her roll over, too.
conversation was slow to start, but ascendance kept the food and drinks coming and when cadence was halfway through her third tequila soda she felt markedly less murdery, at least enough to actually talk to seth again, who was still eyeing her warily when she asked, âso, howâs the movie coming?â
âitâs good,â he answered modestly, âthey tore down our sets, like, the day filming wrapped, so we did some of the reshoots on location in cordonia. that was cool.â
âthey took us on a tour of the palace,â florencia added, though cadence couldnât look at her without catching raleigh in her peripheral vision, so she kept her eyes on seth, even when he grinned widely at her between bites of the appetizer, a sure sign that there was trouble to come.
âryan actually asked me about you,â he said casually, âa lot.â
her eyebrows pulled together in surprise. âryan summers? i think the last time i saw him was when the odyssey dropped.â
âwell -- i guess he knows weâre close,â seth shrugged, and, fuck it. she risked a glance at florencia and found her picking her way through the salad; out of the corner of her eye, cadence was pretty sure raleigh had tuned into their conversation, too. âhe said he heard you were single.â
warmth flooded her face. she lifted her drink and took another measured sip of it. âdid you give him my number?âÂ
now it was sethâs turn to look surprised. âdo you want me to?â
âyeah,â she said without thinking, turning her eyes back to her plate immediately. âflorencia, howâs pilot season going?â
the tequila sodas went down easily after that. eventually, when the meal finished and she stood from her chair, cadence realized she was too drunk to be upright, wobbling precariously on the lawn in her heels. her head swam as she did her best to hold still, though judging by the look ascendance was giving her, she wasnât quite managing it.
âyou guys wanna head to a bar?â avery asked, and she looked up just in time to catch raleighâs eye across the circle, knowing they were having the exact same thought at the exact same time.
her team was going to kill her if she was photographed with raleigh. more than that, the internet would destroy her, and she would absolutely deserve it. she shook her head.
âweâll hang back,â raleigh said, either not noticing the glances the others were exchanging behind his back or tactfully ignoring them, âyou guys go.â
then they were alone.Â
âi donât want to talk to you,â cadence said bluntly, as soon as the others had gone, the half-bottle of tequila sheâd drank obliterating her filter completely.
âthatâs fair,â raleigh allowed, looking around the backyard -- which was slowly spinning in her field of vision -- before asking, âcan i help you upstairs?â
âyou can fuck off.â she spun on her heel to storm away and promptly tumbled down onto the ground, face planting into the grass. fuck.
in an instant, raleigh was down on his knees beside her, one large hand wrapped gently around her arm to pull her upright. âhey, are you okay? jesus, that looked bad.â
âiâm fine,â cadence groaned, yanking her arm out of his grip, âand i donât need your help, and even if i did, you wouldnât be helping me anyway. all you care about is yourself.â
it took her a minute, but she made her way back to her feet, kicking her heels off for better balance. silently, raleigh picked them up for her, giving her a long look before muttering, âcome on, letâs get you inside.â
they trudged back to the house in silence, side-by-side, cadenceâs steps slow and awkward with the world fuzzy around her. raleigh hovered as close to her personal space as he dared their entire way up the stairs, all the way down the hallway until they were both alone in her room.
everything she owned was still strewn across the bed. she groaned when she saw the pile of clothes obstructing the mattress, then threw herself down in the vanity chair and poked around for her makeup wipes instead.
raleigh lingered in the doorway, watching her. âare you gonna be okay?â
she scoffed, yanking the package of makeup wipes open and pulling one out forcefully. âlike you give a shit.â
âwould you stop it? you have every right to be pissed at me but iâm trying to help, here. are you going to be sick?â
âsick of you,â she said, scrubbing the eyeliner off her eyes in a way her glam team definitely would not approve of, with how she was tugging at her face.
but they werenât here. raleigh was. and she needed him to go, before she said something stupid.
when she dropped the makeup wipe into the trash at her feet, cadence found raleighâs arms folded across his chest where he was still leaning in the open door frame. he was staring at her through slightly narrowed eyes, looking either annoyed or pensive -- it was hard to read him, now, considering the drinks sheâd had and how long itâd been since they were last alone together.
maybe sheâd never be able to read raleighâs expression ever again.Â
raleigh dragged a hand across his mouth, rubbing at his jaw before shrugging helplessly and saying, âi do actually want us to be friends, eventually.â
âdonât count on it,â cadence scoffed, turning back to the vanity mirror for a fresh makeup wipe and the eyeliner on her other eye.Â
there was silence for a long moment before he asked, âis that really how you feel?â raleighâs voice was quieter, this time. he was less sure of himself, maybe.
or maybe she was projecting, leaning into her own wishful thinking.
either way, she faltered, pursing her lips as she stared at her streaky, half-made up face in the mirror before her.Â
no. it wasnât what she wanted. but evidently she wasnât able to have what she wanted, so a clean break should have been the next best thing, right? space to get over raleigh in peace, no matter how long that took.Â
when she didnât say anything, he softly continued, âitâs just that... i miss talking to you, you know? other people donât always get it.â
irritation flashed within her, sudden and sharp. that was so like raleigh, to want all of the emotional benefits of her companionship without any of the responsibilities that came with them. âi canât be your friend right now,â she snapped, shutting her eyes briefly when the way her head turned too quickly made the room start to spin again. âmaybe ever, okay?â
there was quiet for so long that she forced her eyes open to check and see whether or not raleigh had left, peeking one eye open slowly, just a crack. cadence sighed when she saw he was still standing in the doorway, staring at her with that dark, inscrutable gaze.Â
raleigh cleared his throat before he said, âiâve been trying to give you space. obviously i knew you wouldnât want to talk again right away, but in a few months, i thought...â
how embarrassing. she turned away in shame, biting down on the inside of her cheek.Â
she wondered how long itâd taken him, to get over their relationship. had he felt they could have been friends again, like nothing ever happened, in one month? three weeks? a few days?
âwell, you thought wrong. so please just leave me alone this weekend.â cadence kept her eyes trained on the wall by the closet on the other side of the room, refusing to turn back around. she could feel the tequila starting to work its way back up in her stomach.
âokay,â raleigh said finally, and she heard his hand tap on the doorframe with finality. ânight, cadence.âÂ
only when she heard the soft sound of his footsteps on the carpet fade away into nothing did she get up, gently shutting the door to her room and slumping back against it to thump her head against the wood quietly once she was alone.
fuck.
that certainly hadnât gone as planned.
in the morning, she woke up with a pounding headache, someone heavy sitting on her legs on the bed. the smell of coffee forced her eyes open, and cadence sat up slowly until her blurry vision focused on seth, who grinned at her again before passing her a mug that was warm to the touch in her hands when she reached out for it.
âmorning,â he said, looking far too obnoxious and smug for someone whoâd been out later than she had the night before. âi thought you might want to know that raleigh asked if i was really going to give your number to ryan at breakfast just now.â
âiâm going to throw up on you,â cadence mumbled, but stared into the coffee in her hands instead, lifting it to her lips for a careful sip that immediately burned her mouth. âwait -- what?â
âany idea why heâd ask me that?â seth smirked, shifting away deftly when she lifted her leg underneath the covers and kicked out at him.Â
âbecause heâs a bad person and youâre an even worse one?â she suggested, slumping back down to the mattress with a huff when seth rolled to the other edge of the bed, out of reach. âi hope you donât think iâm ever going to forgive you for bringing him here.â
seth cringed. âflorencia said iâm lucky to be alive.â he shifted closer tentatively when she laughed. âi really didnât know youâd be here, though. i thought you were going upstate to write.â
âi went last month,â she sighed, âit was miserable. even colder than the city and more depressing than my apartment.â the air b&b had been too empty and too quiet, just like her place back home.Â
âwell, we didnât all conspire to pull a parent trap on you, i promise,â seth said, and she rolled her eyes at him before disappearing back into her coffee, hoping the caffeine would mitigate the hangover that was starting to feel miserable. âbut i also didnât think you were going to get drunk and start a huge fight or whatever.âÂ
âis that what he said?â she asked, glancing at the closed door of her bedroom before looking back at seth curiously, âthat we had a huge fight?â she had been drunk, but the argument sheâd had with raleigh had felt tame in comparison to some of the blowouts theyâd gotten into when they were together, including the final explosive screaming match thatâd broken them up in the fall.
âkinda,â seth shrugged, âbut you know how he is. always downplaying everything.â
âyeah.â her nails tapped against the ceramic mug as she strained to listen to whatever was going on downstairs, but if there were still people in the kitchen, she couldnât hear them, anymore. âare you going to give my number to ryan?â
âi already did,â seth answered with a dismissive flick of his hand, sending a wave of relief through her. there was something comforting in knowing that the decision was out of her hands, and that she wouldnât have to admit, out loud, that she was reconsidering the offer after talking to raleigh last night. âbut that so isnât the point.â
âplease donât start,â cadence practically begged, âi literally donât have it in me to think about this today.â or ever, she silently added. the what-ifs of her and raleighâs relationship would prove to be enough to consume her, if she let them. sheâd spent too many hours, over the last few months, thinking about them -- wondering how he felt, questioning whether or not he was thinking about her, torturing herself guessing where he was or who he was with. life had finally been able to start to distract her with other things again: work, friends, social events. she couldnât afford to take a step backwards.
any question or comment heâd made was probably done in passing. he didnât care who anyone gave her number to.Â
âbut --â seth tried, cutting off with a sigh when she shook her head at him, eyes wide and pleading. âfine. well... thereâs more coffee in the kitchen, okay? come out to the pool when you feel like it.â
she stared off into space as she finished what was left in the mug seth had brought her, rubbing her calves together under the sheets to try and determine whether or not she needed to shave her legs again. itâll give you some time to stall, said a voice in her head helpfully, and she headed to the shower without thinking twice about it, eager to explore ascendanceâs stock of beauty products.
everyone was out by the pool when she finally emerged with her sunglasses and bikini on. the boys were splashing in the water, and cadence kept her eyes lowered as she spread out in one of the empty lounge chairs next to ascendance.Â
âso,â ascendance murmured, as soon as she got comfortable, âi heard last night was a disaster.â
cadence rolled her eyes again. âgood to know raleigh is still the nosey little gossip he always was.â
âif you seriously thought he wasnât going to tell everyone you hardcore unloaded on him last night, youâre delusional,â ascendance pointed out fairly, making her pout where she was sitting next to her friend.Â
fine. âi just didnât think it was news every time we got into an argument,â she muttered, tilting her head back against the lounge chair, squinting into the sun.
âitâs always news, with you two.âÂ
with a sigh, cadence looked away, squeezing her eyes shut against the spots that were suddenly appearing like fireworks. evidently all sense of self preservation had completely abandoned her this weekend, both where raleigh was concerned and otherwise. âyouâre not really going to make me ask about it, are you?â
she turned her head and found ascendance grinning at her. âwould i do that to you?â she asked, rolling over onto her side and inching her chair closer. her voice dropped to a near whisper, and when she dipped her head so her eyes were visible over the tops of her own sunglasses cadence could see how eager she was to fill her in on the news. âthe man is a mess,â ascendance said bluntly, looking almost excited about it.
despite her best efforts not to care, she couldnât stop herself from feeling hopeful and a little relieved, just to hear that. âreally?â
âyeah. i donât think he ever thought youâd be so upset with him, and for so long. itâs kind of embarrassing, honestly. like -- for his soul.âÂ
âwell -- what did he think, that i was just going to be, like, okay, see you? when he picked up all his shit from my apartment while i was on a shoot and told entertainment tonight we had mutual differences. what the fuck was he thinking?â
âbeats me,â ascendance scoffed, slowly shaking her head. âi told him he was out of his mind many times. you know how he is. asking all of us for advice on how to talk to you when you made it clear you wanted him to leave you alone.â
âitâs just like -- what could he even possibly have to say to me, you know? after all this time. he had plenty of chances to text me, or something.â
âi donât think he even knows,â ascendance said. âit just kills him to think anyoneâs mad at him. weâre all like that, in a way.â
âi hate that youâre right,â she sighed, gaze drifting out at the sprawling view in the backyard. âhe doesnât care that itâs me. heâs just too much of a narcissist to have someone dislike him.â
âhang on, i didnât say that,â ascendance mused, pursing her lips. âhe definitely cares more because itâs you. try talking to him for ten minutes, youâll see.â
âi honestly donât think i can stomach looking at him for ten minutes. itâs like --â
âoi! ace, cadence -- get in here, yeah?â
they turned in unison to find avery grinning, splashing water and waving them into the pool. florencia and seth were sitting on the stairs, and her eyes scanned the rest of the space to slowly come to land on raleigh, treading water behind avery, already staring at her.
âcome on,â ascendance smiled, reaching for her wrist and tugging cadence out of her chair before she could protest, yanking her forward towards the edge of the pool.
with a splash, they both jumped in, and cadence was left hovering by the wall as ascendance immediately swam over to avery and jumped into his arms, the two of them spinning away into the deep end with loud laughter.
raleigh lifted his hand to wave awkwardly at her. with a sigh, she swam over, sparing only a brief glance at seth and florencia, who were still parked on the stairs with absolutely no intention of moving and saving her anytime soon.
âyou sleep alright?â raleigh asked, as soon as she was close enough to hear him. the expression on his face was sincere, his eyes resting respectfully on her face.
cadence fidgeted as she tried not to stare in return, though the broad planes of raleighâs chest had always been a distraction -- worse when they were bisected with gold chains and dripping with water, gleaming under the sun. âyeah, i guess. sorry i got drunk and screamed at you or whatever.â
raleigh tipped his head back with a loud laugh, one large palm resting against an equally large pectoral muscle. with his eyes crinkled together under the sun, she gave in and let herself stare at his fingers, glaring bitterly at the tattoos that swirled up his forearm. asshole.
âi think i actually really deserved it, so itâs fine.â when their eyes met again he seemed uncharacteristically uncertain, his trademark shield of confidence momentarily lowered. âi feel like an idiot for not realizing thatâs how you mustâve felt sooner.â
cadence shook her head. âthatâs not your problem.â having an ex-boyfriend was new to her, let alone one she had to work in the same industry with and live a few neighborhoods away from, the tinny call of the subway conductorâs voice announcing the stops still making her cringe down into her takeaway coffee, even months later -- but she was pretty sure none of this was par for the course. in her (admittedly limited, defined mostly by movies) experience, ex-boyfriends didnât concern themselves with the aftermath, and raleigh shouldnât have been any exception.
âi know that.â something unidentifiable flashed in his eyes, and when he winced, she realized it was akin to... pain. uncomfortableness, at the very least. âbut, still. i hate thinking that you felt that way... about me. or because of me, even. itâs just shitty.â
âyou donât have to feel guilty,â cadence said, that same prickly annoyance rising up in her again, too suddenly to contend with before the rude words reached her lips. âi know you think highly of yourself, but iâve had worse things happen to me than being broken up with before.â
raleigh sighed heavily, shaking his head. âiâm fucking this up again. thatâs not what i meant. iâm trying to apologize.â
her face contorted with confusion. âyou are?â
âyeah, but -- this isnât going like how i thought it would.â he shrugged, dragging a wet hand across the stubble on his face. he mustâve forgotten to bring a razor with him; it was growing out thicker than it usually did, even and dark across raleighâs jaw. âi am sorry, though. for what itâs worth, i... really do miss you. and i know that you want me to fuck off and leave you alone and iâm being selfish by not doing that, but -- i just hate not talking to you. and iâm sorry.â
she was quiet for a moment, stunned into silence by his honesty. before sheâd even fully had time to process what heâd said, cadence found herself saying, âyou donât have to fuck off entirely.â
raleigh blinked. âno?â he questioned, sounding unsure.
cadence shook her head. there were a million things she couldâve said -- that sheâd missed him, too, that she hadnât ever wanted to break up in the first place, that all sheâd ever wanted from him was the promise of a future together -- but they all felt too revealing, making her feel as small as she had when sheâd seen his first tabloid cover without her hit the newsstands at the corner store beneath her apartment building. yet again, it was like he was winning their breakup and she was acutely aware of the fact that she was not, and that sheâd never be able to, because raleigh was raleigh and she was in love with him.
so she said nothing, and after a beat, he smiled hesitantly at her, eyes searching her face for some sign that she was going to snap at him again.
but she didnât, and just as she smiled back at him a splash down at the other end of the pool startled them apart, stealing their attention away, and then they were both melding back into the group seamlessly, as though absolutely nothing had transpired between them.
that didnât stop her from obsessing over it, though, analyzing every aspect of their interaction for the rest of the afternoon while she lounged by the pool, scrolled idly through her phone and made small talk with her friends. despite knowing that raleigh was only trying to bury the hatchet between them in order to appease his own narcissism, the small flicker of hope that had been inside her since their breakup, wondering if maybe he regretted what had happened between them, had been stoked back into a roaring fire.
as the sun started to set, she shivered, tugging at the ends of her damp hair. âiâm gonna go shower. what timeâs dinner again?â
ascendance waved her off lazily. âwhenever. you know these fools are going to start a fire and pull out a guitar as soon as it gets dark. just come back down when youâre done.â
she shouldered her bag and was surprised to find raleigh fall into step beside her, just outside the sliding back door of the house. âhey,â he said, shirtless still and warm from the sun, smiling brightly, âyou going up?â
âyeah,â she answered, trying not to stare at him, âneed a break?â
âiâm exhausted,â raleigh said, as they walked up the stairs shoulder-to-shoulder, âi think i got too much sun.â
âi know, iâm going to be washing my hair for, like, a year.â her hands pulled at the split ends, hanging in wet waves around her face. âfeels like i soaked up all the chlorine and took it with me.â
silence fell as they walked down the hallway together, and cadence snuck a glance over at raleigh as soon as she realized he wasnât stopping in front of any of the other guest room doors. they both slowed outside the last one, at the end of the row -- hers.
âlisten,â raleigh said, lifting a hand to rub at the back of his neck, âi was thinking about it, and i feel like i didnât explain myself well earlier.â
great. heâd probably seen the way she was overthinking written all over her face and realized she was holding out hope for something he had no interest in giving her. cringing, she opened her mouth to insist that she was fine when he continued, âi donât just miss you as a friend, cadence.â
her mouth snapped shut. out of the thousands of possibilities sheâd been turning over in her mind, that sentence was one that had genuinely never occurred to her. âwhat?â
âi felt like -- what i said, i felt like it came across, like, that i just miss being around you and talking to you like we used to... which is true, donât get me wrong. but i didnât mean any of it platonically. and i know thatâs wrong, but...â raleigh shrugged, grinning ruefully at her. âi guess i donât care.â
she gaped at him. after a moment, raleighâs grin faltered. âcan you say something? anything is fine.â
âsorry, iâm just, um.â cadence shook her head. what the fuck? âiâm processing.â
âlook, you donât owe me anything,â raleigh rushed to say, âi know that, and -- last night, i know you said you donât even want to be friends, let alone anything else, so the fact that you told me i donât have to fuck off should be enough and is way more than i deserve --â
before she could think too much about it, cadence pushed up onto her toes and kissed him, backing raleigh in against the other side of the hallway. for a split second, he stayed frozen against her; then, just as she started to panic again, he kissed her back, mouth moving urgently over hers.
raleighâs arms wrapped around her and she carefully tip-toed forward, swaying in against his bare chest and pushing her fingers into his hair to drag his head down closer, giving herself over eagerly to the kiss. raleigh answered as if he was drowning, holding onto her so tightly her knees buckled.
the door behind him opened abruptly as they both pushed against it, and they stumbled forward into a linen closet, breaking apart clumsily as towels and washcloths rained down over their heads.
âfuck,â raleigh muttered, breathing heavily. she watched his bare chest rise and fall as he lifted a hand to run his fingers through his hair. âshit, iâm sorry.â
âdonât,â cadence interjected, similarly working to catch her breath. âi kissed you.â
âyeah, but i -- fuck, i want to be able to give you your space. i know you want that.â he seemed torn by the very idea of it.
she shook her head. âi donât,â she rushed to explain breathlessly, âi just -- i said all that stuff because i was mad at you, and i thought... i didnât think you wanted...â
her voice wavered and then trailed off helplessly. with her eyes, she offered raleigh the most pleading look she had, begging him to take pity on her and be the one to drive the conversation, so that she wouldnât have to feel so achingly vulnerable, like sheâd just ripped her chest wide open and laid herself bare for him to examine.
raleigh sighed. âcadence... of course i want you. i always have, ever since you threw that stupid pizza party at one in a million. but i felt like i lost the right to... to even think about this.â
cadence drew in a breath, finding it impossible to tear her eyes away from raleighâs. he looked heartbreakingly sincere, among ascendanceâs racks of askew towels, and no matter how much being with him was going to eventually, inevitably destroy her, she knew she would never, ever forgive herself for turning around now.
âyou didnât.â she watched as raleigh exhaled, relief transforming his face. âiâve thought about it -- so much -- and iâve wondered if you ever thought about it, too, and -- i hoped that you did? but when i didnât hear from you, i had to assume... i mean, i thought you just moved on.â
âno,â raleigh insisted, âjesus, cadence, i could never âjust move on.â do you have any idea --â
she kissed him again before he could continue, and raleigh stepped forward to meet her halfway, blindly walking them both out of the closet and back across the hall to her bedroom, fumbling for the doorknob behind her back without dislodging his lips from where they were doing their very best to pull every last breath from her lungs.
he kicked the door shut when they stumbled inside together, and they fell onto her unmade bed in a tangle of damp bathing suits and sunkissed limbs, the messy sheets twisting into further disarray as they rolled around amongst the pillows.
âfuck, fuck, fuck,â raleigh bit out, crawling on top of her to press her down into the mattress, the combination of his lips on her neck and his hands on her hips wiping each and every last thought from her mind. âgod, cadence.â
âraleigh,â she moaned in return, sliding her hands down the bare expanse of his back, her fingertips digging into the muscles sheâd sorely missed touching, âplease, i want...â
his hips bucked forward, and her voice trailed off into a gasp as he pressed against her, her legs widening to give him more room to settle in. raleigh took advantage of the space immediately, and his hips circled forward slowly in a dirty grind that made her head spin, her eyelashes fluttering as her head tipped back against the pillows.
âis this what you want?â raleigh demanded, his voice low. âcan you feel how much i want you?â
âyes,â cadence breathed, palms pressing against his back, urging him forward against her, âyes, raleigh, please --â
his hands made quick work of her bikini, untying the strings at the sides of her bottoms, letting the fabric fall away beneath them as his hips thrust forward again. her back arched up off the mattress, and as soon as there was space for his hands, raleigh slipped them between her ass and the mattress, squeezing.Â
âyou look so fucking pretty,â he sighed, sounding almost personally offended as soon as his thigh slipped between her legs and she pushed her hips up, chasing any source of friction, âjesus, cadence.â
cadence reached up and threaded her fingers into his hair, pulling his face down for another desperate kiss. she didnât exactly feel pretty, makeup-free and wet from the pool, flushed and panting and begging for her ex-boyfriendâs affection, but the way raleigh was looking at her made her feel like a perfect ten, as stunning as sheâd ever thought she was, more glamorous than sheâd be for a red carpet event.
it was exactly the same as the way heâd used to look at her, a mix of warm adoration and awe in his eyes, his pride bumping up her own self confidence until she thought she could do absolutely anything.
her forehead pressed against his as they broke apart, sharing the same ragged breaths. âi want you to fuck me,â cadence murmured, just so that she could hear the pained, punched-out groan of raleighâs that followed the words, her gaze unfocused on where raleighâs eyes suddenly screwed shut tightly from up close.
âanything,â raleigh promised, lifting his hips so her hands could slide his shorts off, âgod, come here.â
she slipped forward down the bed, into raleighâs waiting arms, and he pulled her in close enough that her body acted on muscle memory, opening up for him to slot into place against her in that same familiar way theyâd come together so many times before.Â
it was as easy as breathing -- as simple and as complicated as everything with raleigh always felt.Â
raleighâs hands planted on the mattress to give him more leverage, and he shoved his hips forward forcefully, pushing her up the bed. âfuck,â he groaned emphatically, making it impossible for her head to be anywhere else but right there, with him, âyou feel so fucking good.â
she knew exactly what he meant. her romantic conquests over the last four months had been few and far between, and raleigh was scratching an itch that had been impossible to manage on her own or with anyone else -- even if sheâd wanted to be with someone else, there was no one who knew him quite like he did, who knew exactly what she needed and never failed to give her everything and more.
each quick thrust nudged the headboard against the wall behind her, the sharp tilt of his hips making her tense until her whole body was shaking with how good it felt. cadence turned her face away as raleigh got the angle just right, throwing her forearm over her eyes to hide the open expression of pleasure on her face, muffling her moans into the sheets under her cheek.
âoh, donât you dare,â he breathed, reaching for her arm and pulling it away, pinning her wrist down to the bed. her head rolled back as his hips bucked viciously, compelled by the low intensity in his voice. âlook at me.â
her whole body felt hot and anxious, but her eyes blinked open obligingly and locked onto his, pinned in place by the wild look in raleighâs gaze.Â
âraleigh.â his name was a moan that felt too loud in the room, her breath hitching halfway through. a full-body shiver tripped down her spine.
above her head, his palm slid the last inch up her wrist to lace their fingers together, squeezing her hand in his.
âdid you miss this?â he asked suddenly, walking his free hand up the inside of her thigh in a maddeningly slow tip-toe. his question was punctuated by a thrust that shoved the bed into the wall again.
âyes,â she groaned, âgod, raleigh, i --â
âsay it.â his hand paused in its path, curling tight around her thigh, fingertips digging in hard enough to bruise.
âi missed this.â the words tripped out in a needy rush, the full-body flush she could feel worsening. âi missed this, i missed you.â
âyeah,â raleigh agreed with an answering moan, bowing his head to bring his lips to her neck again as his fingers finally slid the last few inches up between her legs to touch her, the rough pad of his thumb circling in time with each swing of his hips.Â
in a matter of moments she was shaking, the rough scrape of raleighâs teeth and stubble down the column of her throat making her squirm in the sheets, her legs trembling with the way he was touching her. her nails dug into the back of his hand when she tripped over the edge, and she felt her mouth work with what was doubtlessly a mindless jumble of profanities, her brain too dizzy to work out the specifics.
cadence was only distantly aware of raleighâs hips rocking forward, the curse words he spit out in spanish when he followed her over the edge with his teeth biting at her shoulder. her head was still spinning from the ridiculous ride of it all, and when raleigh finally exhaled, lifted his head and grinned goofily at her, his hand pushing a sweaty lock of hair off his forehead, her heart joined the party, too, seizing up with a worrying tightness before beginning to do backflips in her chest.
he rolled over carefully onto his side, pulling her with him gently until she reached out and braced her hands on his chest. âyou okay?â
âpretty good,â cadence murmured honestly. she felt better than she had in a long time. her eyes swept his face curiously, desperate for an understanding of what he might have been thinking. âjust tell me now if this was, like, a palm-springs-only kind of thing.â
raleighâs wide smile faltered. he sucked his bottom lip into his mouth and she saw a flash of his teeth before he resolutely shook his head, eyes still fixed seriously on her face. there was quiet for a moment before he said, âi want to go at your pace, okay? but... iâd definitely take it all back, if i could. that fight we had -- and those things i said --â he trailed off, reaching out for her arm. âi could explain this a lot better if you give me, like, an hour.â
she laughed, smiling brightly despite the heaviness of their conversation. âsorry. i didnât mean to ruin the afterglow.â
âno, this is important,â raleigh insisted softly, ââcause i donât want you to go home thinking -- whatever. and i donât want this to be just a one-time thing. i mean, iâd love for this to be at least a ten-or-twelve-time thing before our flights tomorrow, but... ideally, uh. you know. thereâd be more than that, too.â
cadence leaned in to close the distance between them, gently catching his lips in a quick kiss. as soon as their mouths brushed, raleigh relaxed against her, the tension abruptly dropping out of his limbs as his hands hesitantly came to rest on her back, tilting her in closer.
âi think that sounds great,â cadence murmured, the cautious smile that was spreading across raleighâs lips enough to set a swarm of butterflies loose in her stomach again.
âthank god,â he sighed, âbecause i seriously need a break before i have to put sentences together again, cadence. you killed me.â
âoh my god,â she laughed, âshut up, youâre so absurd.â
it was a long time before they finally dragged themselves out of bed and into the shower, and an even longer time before she felt like they were presentable enough to join the group, who all looked at the both of them with shit-eating, smug grins when they sat down at the fire in ascendanceâs backyard together, raleigh snagging two slices of pizza out of the box on the table and dangling one of them straight into her waiting, open mouth.Â
âdonât,â cadence insisted without stopping to chew or swallow, âplease keep it to yourselves.â
âwhat she said,â raleigh agreed, finishing his own slice of pizza in a few quick bites and passing his crust over to her wordlessly.
there was a beat of silence before seth said, âokay, no,â and then a cacophony of sound exploded around them, with each of their friends talking louder and louder over each other, shouting their questions out from around the fire.Â
she leaned her head on raleighâs shoulder, chewing thoughtfully. there was certainly still a lot more to talk about -- so many things to discuss -- but she felt more on the same page with raleigh now than ever before, his palm spread out low across the small of her back with his ring and pinky finger dipped beneath the waistband of her shorts.Â
as avery and the others continued to bicker around them, raleigh turned his head and pressed his lips to her temple in a sweet kiss. âhappy valentineâs day,â he murmured into her ear.
cadence glanced down at the face of his watch, shrugging. her lips curved up into her own private smile -- it wasnât quite valentineâs day just yet, at nine oâclock on saturday night.Â
âweâve still got three more hours,â she reminded him, basking in the warmth that raleighâs fond, indulgent laugh provided, âletâs not push it.â
