The next full moon is a supermoon blue moon
The next full moon is a supermoon, a blue moon; the sturgeon moon; the red, corn, green corn, barley, herb, grain, or dog moon; Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Purnima; and Tu B'Av.
The full moon will be Monday afternoon, August 19, 2024, at 2:26 PM EDT. This will be Tuesday morning from Nepal Standard Time eastward across the rest of Asia and Australia to the International Date Line. The moon will appear full for three days, from Sunday morning through early Wednesday morning.
This will be a supermoon. The term "supermoon" was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 as either a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. Since we don't really see new moons, what has caught the public's attention are full supermoons as they are the biggest and brightest full moons of the year. This will be the first of four consecutive supermoons this year (with the full moons in September and October virtually tied for the closest of the year).
Although it will not look blue, as the third full moon in a season with four full moons, this will be a blue moon. The first recorded use of "blue moon" in English dates from 1528. Speculations on the origin of the term include an old English phrase that means "betrayer moon" (because it led to mistakes in setting the dates for Lent and Easter). Or it may be a comparison to rare events such as when dust in the atmosphere makes the moon actually appear blue. Since the 1940's the term "blue moon" has also been used for the second full moon in a month that has two full moons.
The Maine Farmer's Almanac began publishing "Indian" names for full moons in the 1930s, and these names have become widely known and used. According to this almanac, for the full moon in August, the Algonquin tribes in what is now the northeastern U.S. called this the sturgeon moon after the large fish that were more easily caught this time of year in the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water. Other names reported for this moon include the red moon, the corn or green corn moon, the barley moon, the herb moon, the grain moon, and the dog moon.
A quick note for my Southern Hemisphere readers (as I've heard from some recently). Many lunar names and traditions are based on the Northern Hemisphere seasons (I'm interested in learning more about southern traditions). I've noticed some publications shifting names like the sturgeon moon by six months (e.g., using the northern February names for August). Also, for the detailed descriptions below, instead of looking south towards the moon and planets you will be looking north, so what I describe will be upside down. Finally, the seasons are reversed, so morning and evening twilight times, etc., will be very different.
This full moon corresponds with the Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan, also called Rakhi Purnima, celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. One of the traditions is for sisters of all ages to tie a rakhi (a cotton bracelet) around their brother's wrist, receiving a gift from the brother in return as a sign of the continuing bond between them. The term "Raksha Bandhan" translates as "the bond of protection, obligation, or care."
In many traditional moon-based calendars, the full moons fall on or near the middle of each month. This full moon is near the middle of the seventh month of the Chinese year of the Dragon, Safar in the Islamic calendar, and Av in the Hebrew calendar. Av corresponds with Tu B'Av, a holiday in modern Israel similar to Valentine's Day.
For science fiction fans, a note on the author Theodore Sturgeon (1918-1985) in honor of the Sturgeon moon. Theodore Sturgeon wrote mostly science fiction but some horror and mystery stories. For Star Trek fans, his scripts introduced important concepts although only "Shore Leave" and "Amok Time" were produced. He introduced "pon far," the Vulcan hand symbol, "live long and prosper," and the "Prime Directive" (in a script that was not produced but that influenced later scripts).
As usual, the wearing of suitably celebratory celestial attire is encouraged in honor of the full moon. In addition, enjoy the super blue moon, keep in touch with your siblings, and consider reading some Theodore Sturgeon.

Silly Game Time: It's almost 2025. So what was you personal "Song of 2024"? It could be one you liked best or listened to the most (even if it was from an earlier year), or it could be one that typifies the vibe of 2024 for you.
Oh dear . . . Spirit in the Sky is number one lmao, it's just such a good song to zone out to when writing heavy themes 😭
For me, the vibe would probably be Lad by Julia Wolf and Rakhi Singh. Its also a song that I listen to when writing, but it's changing tones fits well with this year . . . started with dread, end with dread

What Are the Sawan 2024 Rituals and Significance?
Tumblr media
Hindu mythology is full of interesting Vedic tales. One such legend we narrated at Vedic Story about the Sawan Shivratri in Hinduism. However, today we are discussing why Sawan Month is important in Hinduism. What is the significance, and should devotees observe the religion fasting or vrat?
Before we start narrating the significance of Sawan Shivratri month, let’s inform you that the Sawan began on July 22 and it will end on August 19.
What Are the Important Timings of Sawan 2024?
Sawan is the most important month in Hinduism and the Panchang Calendar.
It is the sacred month of Sawan, the month of rain, religious fasting, fertility, and soul purification.
Sawan month is a month of Lord Shiva that lasts for a full lunar cycle and starts Ashadha Purnima. However, the month is also known as the Shravan and Kawar Shivratri or Kawar Yatra. It began on 22nd July, Monday, and will end on 19th August, Monday. It lasts for 1 month, and this year the festival is going to last for 29 days.
What is the significance of the Sawan Shivratri Vrat or festival?
Sawan 2024 fast has special meaning and space in Hinduism. Sawan Sonwar Vrat is a rite that unmarried girls perform for getting grooms with qualities of Lord Shiva.
Goddess Parvati also performed Sawan Shivratri to get married with Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan. Thereafter, it became a ritual for Indian women to fast in Sawan month.
Indian mythology and sacred texts of Shiva Purana narrates that whoever keeps the fast in Sawan month on Mondays, Lord Shiva will bless them and fulfill the wishes.
Every Monday, devotees observe the fast throughout the day without eating food or water and pray to Lord Mahadev.
What Are the Rituals Devotees Can Perform During Sawan 2024 Month?
Throughout the sacred Sawan month 2024, devotees of Lord Shiva can pray by performing some rituals that not only clean the devotees internally but also bring happiness into their lives.
Kanwar Yatra
Kanwar Yatra is a festival that devotees perform by going to Haridwar and bringing holy Ganga water barefoot. This pilgrimage yatra signifies the cascading of Goddess Ganga from heaven into the life of Lord Shiva to cool down his poison.
Fasting
Many people in Hinduism perform fasts, the Sawan Somwar Vrat, throughout the month. They don’t consume food and water until the evening and after the prayer of Lord Shiva.
Tumblr media
Shiva Lingam Abhishek
Devotees in Sawan month perform rituals and rites that cool down Lord Shiva and bless them with prosperity and happiness. They bathe Shiva Linga with water, milk, honey, datura, vel patra, and flowers. This ritual signifies the purification of devotees.
Chanting Mantras
Devotees chant the Shiva mantras, especially the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra in Sawan. It is believed that whoever chants the mantra gets protection from Lord Shiva himself and is blessed with long life.
What Are the Other Festivals Falling in the Month of Sawan?
Sawan month is sacred and has many ancient legends to this month.
Let’s find out some of the most auspicious festivals and Vrat fall in this month.
Shravan Shivratri: This festival falls in the Krishna Paksha of Sawan month. Devotees of Lord Shiva perform fasts and perform puja to the blessings of Mahadev.
Nag Panchami: It falls on the fifth day, Panchami of the Shukla Paksha. People worship snakes in this festival to get protection from snake bites.
Hariyali Teej: This festival also falls in the Sawan month. People worship Goddess Parvati and seek her blessings.
Raksha Bandhan: Sawan month also brings the most auspicious festival of Rakhi, the festivals of brother and sister. It is believed the Goddess Parvati tied the Rakhi to Lord Vishnu, and thereafter it signifies the day dedicated to brothers and sisters.
Kajari Teej: This festival falls in the monsoon Sawan month. Married women sing folktales and sing for good harvest.
Janmashtami: Lord Krishna was born on this day, and the entire India and Hindu people celebrate Krishna Janmashtami, the birth of the most beloved deity in Hinduism. Krishna was born on the eighth day of the darkest night in Sawan month.
Therefore, Sawan 2024 is a sacred month in the Hindu calendar.

[ad_1] GG News Bureau New Delhi, 9th Feb. In a historic achievement, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not only swept the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections by securing 48 of the 70 seats but has also made significant inroads among the Dalit voter base, a constituency that has traditionally supported Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In a major shift, the BJP has claimed six out of the 16 seats where the Scheduled Caste (SC) community has a significant presence. Dalits, comprising 16.5 percent of Delhi’s population according to the 2011 census, are the second-largest voting bloc after the Upper Castes. The BJP’s breakthrough in these areas is a noteworthy development, as Dalit voters in Delhi have predominantly backed Congress from 1993 to 2008 and AAP from 2013 to 2020. For the first time since the 1993 Assembly elections, when BJP secured power but lost several Dalit-majority constituencies, the party has successfully contested and won several Dalit-heavy seats. This time, however, the BJP wrested four out of the 12 reserved SC seats, three of which have more than 25 percent Dalit population. Additionally, the BJP has claimed two other seats, Rajinder Nagar and Wazirpur, where Dalits make up over 20 percent of the electorate. Notable defeats for the AAP came in the form of prominent Dalit candidates. Rakhi Birla, a sitting MLA from Mangol Puri, lost to BJP’s Kailash Gangwal by nearly 10,900 votes in the Madipur constituency. Senior Congress leader Rajesh Lilothia also faced defeat in Seema Puri, finishing third. On the other hand, BJP’s Dushyant Gautam lost in Karol Bagh, with AAP’s Vishesh Ravi retaining the seat. The shift in Dalit support towards BJP is significant, as the party had previously managed to gain Dalit votes at the Lok Sabha level but failed to replicate that success in the Delhi Assembly elections. Experts believe the rise in Dalit support for the BJP mirrors the party’s success in Haryana during the 2024 state elections, where Dalit votes were split along sub-caste lines, particularly between the better-off Jatav/Chamar Dalits and smaller communities such as Balmikis. In Delhi, the Jatav/Chamar Dalits, accounting for 38 percent of the total Dalit population, played a crucial role in the BJP’s success. The areas where the BJP saw substantial gains, including Mangol Puri, Bawana, Wazirpur, and Madipur, are areas with a higher Chamar population, while Balmikis, who form 21 percent of the Dalit population, are concentrated in other regions. Interestingly, Rajinder Nagar, which lies in New Delhi, saw a different pattern. Here, the Balmiki population is more dominant (48 percent) than the Chamar population (15 percent), but the BJP still managed to win the seat, marking another shift in voter trends. Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which had hoped to capitalize on Dalit support, saw a drop in its vote share, from 0.7 percent in 2020 to 0.58 percent in 2025, signaling a further erosion of its influence in Delhi’s Dalit community. With its newly strengthened position among Dalit voters, the BJP is poised to leverage this newfound support to further consolidate its position in Delhi’s political landscape, marking a historic shift in the city’s voting dynamics.   The post BJP Makes Significant Inroads Among Delhi’s Dalit Voters in 2025 Assembly Elections appeared first on Global Governance News- Asia's First Bilingual News portal for Global News and Updates.
