7 Union Ministers Not Renominated To Rajya Sabha By BJP: What It Means

Seven union ministers whose Rajya Sabha terms end in April have not been re-nominated by the ruling BJP, prompting speculation Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party may field them in the Lok Sabha election that is expected later the same month.

Among the big names absent are Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya (Gujarat), Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan (Madhya Pradesh), and junior IT Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar (Karnataka).

Also absent are Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav (Rajasthan), and Fisheries Minister Parshottam Rupala (Gujarat), as well as Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Minister Narayan Rane and junior External Affairs Minister V Muraleedharan, both of whom represented Maharashtra.

Sources have told NDTV all seven could now be fielded from Lok Sabha constituencies in various states.

Sources indicate Mr Pradhan may be fielded from Sambalpur or Dheknal in his home state of Odisha, while Mr Yadav may run from Rajasthan's Alwar or Mahendragarh, and Mr Chandrashekhar could contest one of the four seats in Bengaluru; three of these - Central, North, and South - are held by the BJP.

Similarly, Mr Mandaviya may run from Bhavnagar or Surat in Guajrat, while Mr Rupala may get Rajkot. Mr Muraleedharan, meanwhile, may be fielded from his home state of Kerala; the BJP has no presence there, and may look to high-profile names to revive its fortunes.

The BJP has retained only a few big names, in fact, only two union ministers from the Rajya Sabha have been retained - Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw (Odisha) and junior Fisheries Minister L Murugan (Madhya Pradesh). No outgoing MP who has served two or more terms has been repeated.

The only exception is party boss JP Nadda. He though, has been shifted - from Himachal Pradesh, which the Congress won in 2022, to Gujarat. It has also found space for new entrants, including former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who quit the Congress this week.

Overall, it is all change for the BJP, with only four of 28 outgoing Rajya Sabha MPs renominated. The remaining 24 have reportedly been asked for their preference of Lok Sabha seats.

The party has named 28 candidates to the 56 seats that will fall vacant in April, with the focus on new faces and emphasising - to its leadership structure and the voters - its determination to recognise grassroots workers, even those who not known to the public, while also factoring in social equations.

A notable point is that three of the BJP's new Rajya Sabha MPs - Dharmshila Gupta (Bihar), Medha Kulkarni (Maharashtra), and Maya Naroliya (Madhya Pradesh) - are associated with the women's wing, in keeping with the PM's emphasis on the higher approval the party enjoys among women voters.

The BJP's strategy for the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha elections appears to mirror that for the five Assembly polls in November last year, when the party focused on "collective leadership" and selecting high-profile candidates - including fielding Lok Sabha MPs for state elections - to maximise outreach.

The plan worked well. The BJP swept to power in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, winning the latter two back from the Congress as it dominated its Hindi heartland stronghold.

The BJP is well into its Lok Sabha election prep mode. Party sources said, as early as last month, that National General Secretaries had begun meeting every week (on Tuesdays) to develop strategies, including candidate placement. At one such meet, attended by Home Minister Amit Shah and party boss JP Nadda, the party said it would target first-time voters, beneficiaries of central schemes, and voters from backward classes, as well as young people and women, as it bids for a third consecutive term.

Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Early Life & Family Details

Lokesh's grandparents and parents originally lived in a village in Nagaur district of Rajasthan. For livelihood, grandfather Madanlal ji Jangid migrated to Maharashtra in 1952 and his family migrated to Maharashtra in 1986 when Lokesh was just four months old. His grandfather was a carpenter by profession and used to go to hamlets in Jintur taluka in Parbhani district in Maharashtra to make wooden doors, wooden ceilings, other furniture.

Lokesh's father Late Ramchandra was contributing to the family work but he unfortunately died in an accident in 1993 and the Jangid family faced a great crisis. Lokesh was seven years old at that time. After that, Lokesh and his siblings were brought up by their grandfather and paternal uncle, his mother being a homemaker.

By dint of his hard work, his grandfather then settled in the district headquarters Parbhani and started his own saw mill there. Lokesh's uncle Ashok Kumar and his younger brother run a plywood business today at the same place.

Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Educational Journey

Lokesh studied till 10th at Model English School, Parbhani and did his 11th and 12th at Bal Vidya Mandir Junior College in Parbhani. Lokesh imbibed the habit of reading newspapers from his grandfather in his childhood. As an English medium student, when he was learning Barahkhadi at school, Lokesh used to read Hindi newspaper fluently because his grandfather had already taught him ‘Devanagari’ at home before Hindi and Marathi were introduced in the school.

Lokesh used to be good at academics and extra-curricular activities right from his school life. He stood third in Maharashtra in the state level science fair in class 9 and represented the state at the national level twice in science fairs. Also, he used to actively participate in essay competitions and oratory competitions. On the birthday and death anniversaries of national heroes and great leaders, he used to deliver speeches in every programme in the school. Overall, the foundation was laid in the school life itself. While studying engineering, too, he used to actively participate in extra-curricular events. He was President of college’s National Service Scheme (NSS) Chapter. Many programs such as digital literacy campaign, rural technology transfer etc were carried out in the village adjacent to the college.

Fascinated with Sociology during civils preparation, he joined full-time Masters programme in Sociology at JNU Delhi. He says he enjoyed Sociology much more than his engineering subjects, and he had not got selected for UPSC, would have possibly continued with a career in academics with Sociology discipline.

Lokesh gives all the credit to his grandfather who is his inspiration. Lokesh's grandfather used to read newspapers from his youth despite being a carpenter. From the first election to the Parliament since 1952 till his last, he keenly followed the political affairs of all the states. He used to give money to Lokesh to buy magazines from Rly station outlet since the time Lokesh was in 7th class.

Lokesh used to watch Doordarshan news, debates of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha on television along with his grandfather. This is how he started following current affairs and politics, and the interest in civil service general studies was kindled.

Based on this, he felt he could make a difference in the system by joining IAS. Though he was fascinated by politics, he knew he couldn’t make it there because of various constraints. So he thought of civil services as the next best option to impact things on a larger scale.

Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Preparing for UPSC Exam

Having started reading newspaper keenly from his early school years, and then magazines like CSR, India Today, Outlook, preparation had already taken off unknowingly. Thereafter, in the library of his engineering college, he regularly read more magazines, including ones like ‘Yojana’ and ‘Kurukshetra’. He got selected for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) during campus placement when he was in his third year of engineering. But he chose not to join TCS as he felt his calling was something different than a corporate job. So, after completing engineering in 2008, he headed straight to Delhi to prepare for UPSC full-time.

Lokesh's uncle Ashok Jangid fully funded Lokesh's education including the hefty fee for the UPSC coaching in Delhi. “Don't you worry about financials or the TCS job, I am with you, just focus on UPSC if you feel that is your dream”, supported him and never let him feel the absence of his father , moral support wise or financially.

Lokesh got All India Rank 910 in UPSC first attempt in 2009 exam based on reserve list. He got his first posting in Lakshadweep islands under DANICS (Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands Civil Service).

He continued his UPSC preparation by working in the remote islands of Lakshadweep. In his second and third attempts, he couldn’t make it. By the time the fourth attempt was underway, the pattern of the civil services exam had changed completely, with introduction of more subjects and papers in general studies in the Mains exam. In Lakshadweep, newspapers came only once in a fortnight by ship from Kochi but basic internet facility was available. So without any coaching, test series or new material, he continued the preparation by using the material available online and went to Delhi only to write the UPSC main exam. Prepared for interview at Lakshadweep and secured 68th rank in country in CSE 2014.

Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Journey as an IAS Officer

Got MP cadre in the IAS and after one-year training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, joined as Assistant Collector at Sehore in Madhya Pradesh.

After completion of training at LBSNAA, he was then posted as Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Panchayat Raj, Govt of India, for three months to familiarise himself with the policy processes of the Government of India. In 2016, he was appointed as SDM in Vijaypur tehsil of Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh and started working directly in the field. After that he was posted as CEO Zila Parishad in Harda district. And post that, he joined as Additional Mission Director at Rajya Shiksha Kendra in Bhopal. He focused on improving the learning outcomes of children, especially in foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) grades, and launched a dedicated fellowship programme for NIPUN Bharat. When Lokesh SDM in Sheopur district in Madhya Pradesh, primitive tribal group Saharia tribe was predominant in the region. Lokesh noticed that the education and the status of healthcare facilities was very poor in the sub-division. In order to improve the learning outcomes of primary school students, a very extensive initiative 'Padho Vijaypur' was implemented in collaboration with the Pratham organization, which directly benefited thousands of students who started reading the texts and teachers also became more involved in teaching. After the success of Lokesh's project, the Madhya Pradesh government named this experiment 'Dakshata Unnayan' and implemented this initiative in all the districts of the state. To improve the basic infra in the healthcare facility CHC, funding was raised through the Rogi Kalyan Samiti and health infra was enhanced along with providing better services.

When he was the CEO Zila Parishad in Harda , he carried out remarkable work in water conservation using MNREGA, building and repairing ponds all across the district. As Additional Collector in Badwani district, he tackled the Corona crisis at the earliest by working for availability of oxygen, setting up oxygen plant, conversion of private hospitals into covid centers, free treatment of patients under Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Barwani was the first district in the state where the positivity rate came down from 40% to 0.5% and the number of patients came down to single digit.

Ahead Of Rahul Gandhi's Appeal In Court, Congress Alleges "Illegal Arrest"

Senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, are accompanying Rahul Gandhi to the court.

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday alleged that "illegal arrests" were being made to prevent party leaders and workers from going to Surat where Rahul Gandhi is set to file an appeal in a court against his conviction in a criminal defamation case.

Senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, are accompanying Rahul Gandhi to the court.

The Congress leader will seek suspension of his sentence by the sessions court, sources said.

In a tweet in Hindi, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "There are continuous reports of illegal arrests by the BJP government in Gujarat to prevent Congress leaders and workers from going to Surat." "The undemocratic face of BJP is being exposed again and again," he said.

The Congress condemns all these activities and demands their immediate release, Ramesh added.

Rahul Gandhi will land in Surat at around 2 pm, according to the Congress sources.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Congress Rajya Sabha member K C Venugopal and other senior party leaders will also be in Surat.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu are also likely to be in the city as Gandhi moves court, the sources said.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate H H Varma here had on March 23 convicted the 52-year-old Gandhi and sentenced him to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him over his "Modi surname" remarks.

The case was filed against Gandhi on a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi for the Congress leader's alleged remarks "How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?" Mr Gandhi, who had served as an MP from Wayanad in Kerala, made the remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka on April 13, 2019 during the Lok Sabha elections campaign.

The sentence of two years invited his disqualification from the membership of Parliament under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

BOLLYWOOD LIFE & TIMES (& PRACTICES) BEFORE 1975-77 !

(Repost from June 2022, from previous id, to further h/l how strict public broadcasting norms were till 1975, & how post-Emergency times cut PM's hands off & gave rise to the free-for-all (in every way) we know over past half decade)

Few incidents from film related history, contemplating on the 'art imitating life or the vice versa' tussle. 1952 & it's film 'Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo' is among the first few times, we know of, the independent Indian Govt exercised it's given powers to censor entertainment content in society. (Though we know of more than a handful such incidents during British Indian times, starting from 1920, but for non-moral anti-Govt reasons). For it being the first out-&-out 'revenge action drama', making the Govt reason how 'it glamorizes & endorses jungle-like inhumane non-Gandhian principles, that too at the hands of the protagonists'. And how 'it promotes negative tendencies in people, using the cinematic crutch of justification'. Another even finer & most famous example of such proposed Govt interference in mass art, being this song from 1957 released & Indie All-Time Top 5 'Pyaasa'! Where no less than India's premiere film voice then, Nargis, in semi-retirement & in the 2nd last year of her 15 yr long film career as leading lady, stood in Parliament, in her capacity as Rajya Sabha member, and demanded this Guru Dutt song to be outright banned! Reasoning how it seemed to be promoting prostitution in India, moreover manufacturing more discord & discontent in the nation in general, in the garb of bemoaning it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ta4BmumQKc&list=PLm1v8VeYLVlmERFjKGjgAcxJiwPLNfx54&index=2 Such high artistic & mass communication standards set by our predecessors, as compared to just 25 or so years later, when the same Govt, in continuing reign, by late 1970s, came to give a veritable open pass to anything & everything in the name of art. Perhaps, & we can only speculate, borne outta a post-emergency India, where the Central Govt, was so heavily scarred by the criticism to it's over-reaction in imposing Emergency rule in India, even if on account of frivolous & perhaps unbecoming Oppn tactics (in allegedly conniving to get it's leader Indira Gandhi banned from elections over a trifle matter)..that it veritably turned a blind eye to every entertainment related matter, the germ, leading to the infamous 'Bollywood mutation of the 1980s'..one that totally transformed a once thriving & highly hailed industry, to a cheap medieval-aged pittance in existence, in comparison. One can well take their own sides, as to the chronological art-leading to- life or life-leading to art debate, though whether mass mutation of a entire society, & 2nd largest ever society of world at that, is easier, or that of a set of few thousands in the field of drama, I leave open to the public to mull over.

Another most entertaining report, from columns of film writers of 1970s, all connected to the 'art imitating life or vice versa' debate: Further confirming the Indie theory that film censorship was well-enforced, to keep movie content as non-corrupting to the Indian masses, as grossly possible, till as late as 1975 atleast, ie till Emergency times (1975-77)! Didya know that 4 major changes/cuts were forced by the Film Censor Board, upon 'Sholay'(75), one of the biggest b.o. hits in the history of Hindi cinema, in Indies All Time Top 125 (& by eons the greatest gangster flick of Bollywood - a gangster flick, as hardcore fans of today esp might say, whose raw biting teeth were quietly removed by out-house docs before release) ?! 1. Film goers & film writers hailing from Calcutta testify to how, 'Sholay' in it's 1st week of release, showed Gabbar Singh as an ex-army man, who was convicted for the murder of his senior officer, & twas that conviction he ran outta jail from. (Army man turning civilian murderer, was ofcourse wrong, so swoosh swoosh) 2. The 2 protagonists, Jai & Veeru, whose biggest charm was how they turned their life from being recidivist crooks to saviors, were actually shown stealing the bike, that the famous "Ye dosti hum nahi todenge" was shot on, from a guy at a dhaba they had another needless altercation with! (Nope, not done. Cut) 3. The murder of Ahmad (played by Sachin Pilgaonkar) was infact shown quite graphically in the first cut, so graphic, that the entire scene was ordered to be deleted, to be replaced by the famous 'ant killing' scene. The joke that carried on thereafter was, that Censors replaced a monstrosity with outright devilry, by replacing a screen murder with an actual one-of the poor ant. *Rofl. Slap* 4. The climax of the film in 1st cut had Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) incidentally murdering Gabbar in course of their final brawl. But Emergency times couldn't have had a police-officer, even a retd one, taking law into his own hands, so replaced with the proper done thing. Bravo, to everyone. That's how All-Time Blockbusters were & are/ought be made!

Biography of J. Jayalalithaa

Jayalalithaa Jayaram ( born 24 February 1948 ), commonly referred to as J. Jayalalitha, is the former Chief Minister and current leader of the opposition of the Government of Tamil Nadu, India. She is the incumbent General Secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( AIADMK ), a Dravidian party in the state.

J. Jayalalithaa is called Amma ( English : Mother ) by her supporters and Puratchi Thalaivi ( English : Revolutionary Leader ) by her followers. She was a popular film star in Tamil and Telugu cinema before entering politics.

J. Jayalalithaa was born Komalavalli in Melukote in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district, Karnataka, in a Tamil Iyengar family, native of Srirangam, Trichy. She was initially educated at the Bishop Cotton Girls’ High School in Bangalore but later moved to Madras State ( now Tamil Nadu ) along with her mother Sandhya, who ventured as an actress into Tamil cinema.

J. Jayalalithaa was then schooled at Sacred Heart Matriculation School ( popularly known as Church Park Presentation Convent ) in Chennai ( then, Madras ). She excelled in academics and has claimed that she was offered a scholarship for higher studies from the Government of India but with guidance from her mother, young Jayalalitha moved into film industry.

J. Jayalalithaa started acting most of her well known hits when she was 15. She had an older brother, Jayakumar, who died in the early 90’s. He was married to Vijaya and has two children.

Prior to her venture into politics, she had a successful career in the Tamil film industry as an actress. She acted in the English language movie Epistle released in 1961 and produced by Shankar Giri, son of former president of India Dr. V. V. Giri. Chinnada Gombe, her first film in Kannada, was a major hit.

J. Jayalalithaa first Telugu film Manushulu Mamathalu made her famous. In 1972, she was honored by the Tamil Nadu State Government with the Kalaimamani award. She has acted opposite Dharmendra in the Hindi Movie Izzat. Her last film was Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal in 1980.

J. Jayalalithaa Political Career

In 1981, she joined the AIADMK and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1988, marking her entry into the Parliament of India. Her association with politics grew from her friendship with the Late M. G. Ramachandran ( popularly known as M.G.R ), a movie star and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and her position as MGR’s concubine helped her become his political heir.

On M.G.R’s death, she was alienated by a faction of the party who, instead, chose to support M.G.R’s wife, Janaki Ramachandran. Drawing on her massive popularity and her image as the “wronged woman”, in 1989, she won the elections to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, incidentally, becoming the first woman to be elected Leader of the Opposition.

In 1991, following the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, just days before the elections, her alliance with the Indian National Congress paid off as a sympathy wave propelled the coalition to a massive victory.

J. Jayalalithaa was re – elected to the legislative assembly and became the first elected woman chief minister of Tamil Nadu, serving the full tenure ( 24 June 1991 – 12 May 1996 ) ( Janaki Ramachandran technically became the first woman chief minister following her husband’s death, but she was unelected and presided over a transitional ‘caretaker’ government ).

Due to an anti – incumbency wave, and several allegations of corruption and malfeasance against her and her ministers, she lost power to the D.M.K in 1996, in a landslide defeat. All the ministers in her erstwhile cabinet, including her, were defeated in the elections and six of them even lost their deposits, meaning that they did not even secure the minimum number of votes expected of them.

She returned to power with a huge majority in the 2001 elections, having mustered a bigger coalition and defying many pre – poll predictions. In the last assembly elections held in 2006, her party had to relinquish power to the DMK government. Read More on..

Farooq Abdullah responds to PM’s ‘New Kashmir’ statement

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah criticized the remark made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday on Article 370 of the constitution. He said that the move would do nothing but promote dynastic rule in the erstwhile state. "If Article 370 was this bad, how did Jammu and Kashmir ever make progress," he questioned.

PM Modi visited Srinagar first time after scrapping of Article 370, where he called it a "new Jammu and Kashmir" and credited the scrapping for it.

“For decades, for political gains, Congress and its allies misled people in the name of Article 370. But today there are equal rights and opportunities for all. The people know the truth... they were misled... This is the new Jammu and Kashmir for which we all were waiting,' he had said.

Farooq Abdullah hit back shortly after saying, "If Article 370 was this bad -- I would like the Prime Minister to re-hear the speech made in the Rajya Sabha by then Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, in which he compared two states. He compared Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir in terms of progress when Article 370 was there," Farooq Abdullah said.

"Now, if Article 370 and nepotism are responsible, then how did we make that progress? It is the people's rule, I lost the election as a chief minister. So, where is the dynastic rule?" Mr Abdullah said. "This dynastic rule is a kind of common voice I heard also in parliament. In every speech that PM makes, he makes a particular target on it".

Abdullah also pointed out that scrapping Article 370 also made education costlier in the state.

Education from the level of primary schools to universities was free, he said. "Today, education is only free up to the 14th class. In the universities, you have to pay now. An honest commission has to be put to see what was there before the revoke of Article 370 and what was is thereafter," Mr Abdullah said.
