hi so i was thinking about revenger again today and even though i've talked about this before i can't not talk about it again

i am usually not the type to complain about translations (unless it is something especially egregious such as the yuzuki-san ep1 debacle) and i wouldn't even call this a complaint really

but something so significant and so beautiful was lost in translation in ep8 of revenger

this is the relevant scene:

background for context:

raizou (black hair here) is on a quest for revenge after the death of his wife (the woman in the painting, which raizou painted himself) and he's taken on 'taishin' as a pseudonym to sell his art (for which he discovered a talent and passion during this revenge quest)

his wife's name was yui, and white hair here (the leader of this ragtag band of revengers) is named usui yuen

all of this is relevant

the main issue here is... the character 唯, which was originally written on the painting, has been translated as 'tai' which later becomes 'taishin' when raizou adds a few strokes and a second character to form his pseudonym

but what is 唯 actually? it's... yui

the original character on the painting, 唯, is his wife's name. and usui's name? 碓氷幽烟

key character being: 碓

the subtitles do capture the significance of raizou taking a character from usui's name to make his pseudonym, and that's great. but that isn't all he did. with two strokes he changed the 口 to a 石, he changed his wife's name into a character from usui's name and then added a 心 (heart!) to make it his own

there are a whole lot of reasons this is Special to me but that would require going into the rest of the show which i won't do lol, the dynamics are fascinating but this post is already getting way too long

anyway i just think this is a suuuper normal and well-adjusted thing he did there, didn't alter my brain chemistry at all (lying) and i just need more people to know about it because i think the subs (while doing imo as best as they could!) really did not make it possible for most viewers to catch this

Raizou finally let it slip that he was a member of a cult so let's dissect that.

Raizou became friends with Eliise when they were very young and they quickly fell into a moirallegiance, which necessitated Rai knowing about Eliise's unusual living situation.

We'll preface by saying that members are encouraged to interact with outsiders to bring more trolls into the fold. Raizou in particular was susceptible to their love bombing--being showered in positive attention and affection--because he's a depressed and dependent guy. He eagerly accepted the love that drew him in and the drugs that kept him tethered because Eliise said it was normal.

The "cult" obviously doesn't call themselves that, they are a movement called Chrysalism. Their godhead is a troll hatched generations ago with moth wings, called the Superior. Chrysalists believe that mutations are just steps toward evolution, and the endgame for them is bypassing the Mother Grub to purposely breed mutations into their bloodlines.

Every so often another winged grub pops up in their clutches, and it's raised as near royalty. When it reaches maturity, it's dubbed "The Mother" and serves as a figurehead for the movement. The congregation sometimes drinks of its blood to encourage togetherness.

The real purpose of the Mother is live birth, which to this point has not been successful. There have been multiple attempts, usually just by surgically implanting eggs. The failures don't really dishearten the congregation, they're just told that the vessel wasn't pure enough.

Eliise is the next Mother. He wholeheartedly believes that he's gonna birth a grub and advance trollkind. An artificial womb was implanted in him. Raizou got to experience the surgery, which was kind of the turning point for him. He actually did try to get Eliise out because he knows this shit is gonna just end up killing Eliise.

Eliise does not believe he'll die because he's pure!

As with a typical cult, abuse was rampant and Raizou finally cut and run.

You've talked about the meaning behind some of the samurais'/Wano names - does Kanjuro have any particular meaning (or pun)?

not that i’m aware of- and i kind of find that interesting in and of itself?

all of the other akazaya nine, and really nigh-on every wano native we’ve met so far, has got some kind of meaning in their names. kin’emon, toki, and tama’s reference their powers, momonosuke and oden follow a food name theme (and momonosuke is probably also a momotarou reference), and even those that are less direct in their relevance do have a meaning (kiku- chrysanthemum, tsuru- crane, raizou- lightning, etc). 

but kanjurou just kinda... doesn’t? that i can tell? his name is written as カン十郎/kanjuurou, with the kan written in katakana, which have no inherent meaning (and kan is a very common sound in japanese that could mean any number of things), and the juurou just being a rather generic name ending. it doesn’t really mean anything.

headcanons for their favorite foods please?

（*´▽｀*）Keeping in mind that the kids don’t exactly have good food options… this is going to be a little sad. Also, I feel like this is relevant, so here’s a picture of the food they offered Kanon in the movie.

This is the absolute best they could get their hands on. Yeah, um, this is sad. 

Nico:

-Honestly, he’s poor enough that he’d like darn near anything. I can see Nico as having run out of room to care about what he eats. He probably couldn’t name his favorite food if you asked him to. I can see him mostly eating the cheapest things that are available, possibly even eating stale or slightly spoiled food because it’s all he can get ahold of. 

Raizou:

-While one would imagine that he’d like something considered “girly”, like sweets, I think he’d like richer, more filling foods, like meat or carbs. As poor as he is, something that will stick with him for a while is ideal. I can honestly picture him liking salty things too, but I imagine he’d be sort of embarrassed about it, since it doesn’t match the image he tries to keep. 

Kaneda:

-I have a strong headcanon that Kaneda likes sweets, but can almost never afford them. It’s also canon that he loves his mother’s cooking. Basically, Kaneda is the absolute cutest. Just for cuteness points, please picture him liking that Japanese style strawberry shortcake that always shows up in anime. Yep, that’s what I think he’d like. 

Dentaku:

-Like the rest of the kids, it’s not like he has many options for food to choose from. However, I can see him liking seafood for some reason. He’d probably only have ever tasted the cheap kind, like tinned fish, though. I also see him as not caring too much what he eats, and tending to be more preoccupied with his mathematics than what or how much he eats. 

Dafu:

-While I doubt that he’d get it very often, I can picture him liking fresh fruit. What they have access to in Keikou is probably all kinds of terrible, like that pathetically tiny grapefruit in the picture, though. I think that Dafu is from one of the better off families (although that does not say much), so he might have access to slightly better food than, say, Nico or Zera. 

Tamiya:

-He’d probably like cheap snack foods, like the kinds of things that one can get a lot of for not a lot of money. I don’t see him being a picky kid, though, and he’d probably eat just about anything he was given. Because he grew quickly, he likely went through a period of time in which he was constantly hungry, and, in that time especially, he’d eat anything he could.

Yakobu:

-I think he’d like homemade foods best. Again, he probably wouldn’t eat so well, and homemade food would be something of a treat, making it special. I can picture him liking pickled vegetables and more traditional foods, and he would definitely be the kind of kid to never have a picky moment. He’d definitely have issues with overeating, too. 

Jaibo:

-He’s the pickiest of the kids, by far. I once read a headcanon about Jaibo being autistic, and going with my own experiences of that sensory issues. While he’d kind of have to eat what he’s given because of what his family can afford, I imagine that he’d be grossed out by certain tastes and textures. As for favorite foods, I can see him liking hot things, like noodle dishes. 

Zera:

-Well, lychee. We all know that Zera loves lychee. Other than that, I can see him sort of liking sweets, but being most picky about if the food is fresh or not. This is going to get sad, but i can see his mother having tried to pass spoiled food off on him, and Zera developing a particular anxiety over food being bad. I also feel like he’d be one of the kids who would eat anything. 

Kanon:

-I imagine Kanon as being the best off of the kids, so her food options might actually be semi-decent. I doubt she eats much, though, for who knows what reasons, as Tamiya noted that she’s particularly small. For some reason, I picture her liking tempura and related dishes. I don’t think Kanon would have the same food issues as the rest of the kids, either.

Here's an Emirae primer because a lot of shit that went on with him was ages ago and who the fuck would remember

While stealing and being a general scoundrel, Emi murdered a seadweller. He chose to work in a brothel rather than be executed, expecting that he could just, yknow. Escape. That didn't happen.

After a few months of general bitchiness and earning a reputation for black flings (accidental, since he was genuinely trying to piss people off) he met Fivale. Fivale took a near-immediate interest in him. Emirae could not fucking stand him.

Fivale becomes a regular, and quickly Emirae's best paying customer, even giving him a collar which Emi's boss said he had to wear. Emirae repays him by scratching his face, attempting to rip a piercing out of Fivale's tongue because it was blue, and knocking him out with a lamp.

Fivale hunts down a customer who had hurt Emirae (read: bruised his face once) and gifts Emirae his head in a box! Romantic. Emirae thought it was fucking horrible but also kind of fucking rad.

Emirae fucks with Fivale's CLEARLY OBSESSIVE feelings for him, lying to his face that he loves him too, and gets the shit kicked out of him by Fivale's lusus.

Emirae gets stupid fucking LIVID at Fivale and threatens him in plain view of literally everyone in the brothel. Fivale comes back at him with the fact that he's saved enough money to buy Emi. The crowd goes fucking wild.

At some point, Fivale gains himself a terrible moirail in the form of Raizou, who is just as obsessed with Fivale as Fivale is Emirae. Raizou is thoroughly disgusted by and jealous of Emirae, going so far as to pay for a visit to him only to cry and try to strangle him. He complains LOUDLY to everyone but Fivale about how much he wants Emirae out of the fucking picture.

Fivale goes to buy Emirae's title only to find that someone bought it out from under him. Rage ensues. Then depression.

Raizou is secretly thrilled but also horrified at his poor moirail's state and so he does what he can to find Emirae. He accidentally does find him, because his drug dealer is the one who bought him just to personally fuck with Raizou and get money out of him. Raizou panics and tries to remedy this himself without telling Fivale because he KNOWS he is 100% to blame.

While Raizou panics and tries to scrape up a shit ton of money, his dealer's servant Kid (Jaeden) stages an uprising with the rest of the help and kills the master, taking over his business. The dealer's pet mutant, Auncia, escapes with a heavily drugged Emirae much to Kid's disgust.

Emirae and Auncia crash at an abandoned hive. Emirae has no memory of his past or even really himself thanks to drugs and trauma. They get by with Emirae's sticky fingers and Auncia's survival skills.

Emirae saves up the money to get a genetic reading, learning the bare minimum about himself: name, age, criminal history. The guy he got the reading from calls the troll cops in hopes of getting a reward for a runaway slave, but Emirae gets the fuck out of there and he and Auncia start camping and moving around often.

Emirae attempts to save money to get himself and Auncia a cheap apartment. Auncia does what he can to keep them both healthy, but fucks up and feeds Emirae some fluke infected grubs. (http://fantroll-insp.tumblr.com/post/169710540503/lusus-fluke)

Emirae gets sick, Auncia rushes out shopping hoping to nurse him back to health. Raizou just so happens to be shopping and smells Emirae on him. He tails Auncia back to camp. Ready to be a hero in his beloved moirail's eyes, he kills Auncia and takes Emirae home. 🎉

Tonight you got a message from a contact, telling you someone had fed Emirae’s blood into the system. The first lead you’ve had in… weeks. Part of it makes you happy, because maybe Fivale will finally be happy. But mostly it just makes you want to die.

“I could be him.” You murmur again, hands ruffling your shortened hair. The same length, now, but not the same colour. You spend a moment brushing it into place, having memorized his face. Personality. The inflection of his voice. You could be him...

Could. But you won’t. Life couldn’t be that kind to you. Your hand, balled into a fist, flies at the mirror but stops short because how could you ever break something that belongs to your precious moirail? Instead you lean your forehead against it and just cry.

They’re magnetic and you? You can only dream to be.
