Another late night analysis: the bad bitch herself, Yoshino
Tumblr media
Alright, so since y'all actually understood my ramblings on our best bad boy Kirishima, it only makes sense to take a look at the queen of the castle, Yoshino. A smart gal who has more on her hands than she needs but boy does she cope.
Now Yoshino is who we are introduced to as the protag, and thus, like her more, we see her more, we understand her situation and her motivations. Most of the time we can deem them as normal. She was a young girl trying to live her life when the yakuza side of her family reared its ugly head and called her to do her duty. But, one of my favourite things about her is that she isn’t actually normal. Compared to Kirishima, sure she is normal, but I think its very easy to forget that he is a guy in the yakuza, and men have very different roles from women. Kirishima has very likely beaten in more faces than Yoshino has probably seen, yet she was able to gain his respect, and daresay his heart with a bag of 4 million yen made from selling her fuckin kidney and some heavy threats to some meaningless schoolgirls. Why? Well, you see, to tie in with Kirishima’s little analysis way back when, he is good at reading people. And what he read from her that day was that she was no ordinary woman, she was willing to fight in his grounds, by her rules. She didn’t need to raise a fist to prove her point, she put her money where her mouth is and literally had a piece of herself torn out to prove herself to him. It’s metal, I won’t lie.
But the point to take away is that she isn’t a simple woman. Though she understands and relates with people on a pretty regular level, there will be times when her yakuza heritage will slip through. Like with the threats she made to the girls who fucked her shoes up, she didn’t hesitate to tell them that no matter how good of a life she lives, she will drag them down with her and fuck them up. She isn’t violent by nature, but she is when provoked. Metal as fuck, but definitely not a normal response.
The gag is that I don’t even think she’s fully aware of the depth of her threat. Sure, she has the power to get someone seriously hurt or killed, but has she ever actually killed someone? When she was hit round the head during that search for another yakuza girl, she hesitated before she decided to use her hairdryer to bash a guys head in. She thought about how strong Kirishima was, not how crazy it was that he lashed out so violently. Instead of diffusing the situation, she escalated it, she took her oppourtunity and whacked a man with her fresh-out-the-box hairdryer with full force and told him to die.
Instead of taking the peaceful way out, she takes the way that she feels she needs to take and will fight when necessary. Like what Kirishima said before, when shes pressed into a corner, she doesn’t run, she makes a home in that corner. Amongst the violence, the blood, the lies and politics, she made a home in it. She is making herself comfortable with the world of yakuza in a way that works within her means, without having to compromise her moral integrity like Kirishima. She blinks at his antics, even reveres them to some extent, but she has never turned away from them. And i think that that what makes her dangerous, potentially as dangerous as Kirishima. She accepts that violence is needed to win and she is willing to become violent, the question is how far will she go? She is more than capable, she just needs the oppourtunity to really show off.
That, on top of the fact that shes also very observant. There came a point in the mange where she was explaining to Kirishima how she knew he was seeing multiple women and that she had come to understand that he was a guy who doesn’t follow rules even if he knows that he’ll be punished. She keeps track of people, their behaviours and collates them in a way that is useful to her in a pragmatic and objective way without affecting how she feels about them.
Tumblr media
All I’m saying, is that if she were born male, she’d have made a damn fine yakuza man. She has adequate social skills, good looks and perfect connections, she would’ve flourished. The violence and intimidation fit like a glove and its one that she’s beginning to wear more and more.
Now her motives. Yoshino is self-preserving, but she’s also prideful. She was raised the granddaughter of the head of a yakuza and thats how she acts. She moves the way she does not just because she represents a facet of her family but because she has her own goals. One thing I can’t get out of my head was some panels in the beginning where her grandfather tells her to stay in Tokyo and make him fall in love with her, and then break his heart. I can’t help but feel like that’ll come in handy at some point. She is following orders but will she follow them all? For the most part it looks like shes doing her best to get by but shes a lot more thoughtful than she lets on so who knows.
Last on the agenda is the possibility of her ever coming to love our main guy, Kirishima. Long and the short of it, maybe. Early days in terms of their relationship but I think there’s potential. She recognises that Kirishima is weird in every wrong way, but she also recognises that they have a shared history. They live similar lives due to their status and that’s rare for her. He’s attractive, but that’s offset by his personality and habits which she doesn’t really approve of. Right now there’s nothing concrete for her to love, he has the foundations of a guy she could love, but he’s lacking in what I think she needs - a reliable male figure who she can trust. He’s unpredictable, secretive and volatile, something which I don’t think she can handle yet. Yet.
Again, big love to the scanlation group for the gift that is raise wa tannin ga ii, and big love to the bad bitch herself, Yoshino.

Dude!! I'm in love with raise wa tannin ga ii! The art style is especially super pleasant to the eyes. And i love the way they don't shy away from violent depictions of yakuza lifestyle, without feeling the need to romanticise it. It's bloody, it's complicated and it's not a good thing. Heck the main male lead has an incredibly unhealthy obsession with the heroine and it's not shown as ''cute'' or whatever. I mean it's still comedic but in a somewhat matured way? Thanks for posting about it!
Yay! Glad you liked it! I love the artstyle as well, it’s so dynamic and somehow different than usual in a way I dont know how to explain
