The characteristic colour of smoky quartz occurs in nature when rock crystal quartz is exposed to natural radiation from radioactive elements or adjacent radioactive rocks over long periods of time. Also in the Victorian era, dark Smoky Quartz gemstones from the Irish Mourne Mountains were favoured in mourning jewellery.
