The circus members gathered to await Caine to announce their daily adventure. They made idle chit chat fully unaware of the being luring in the shadows, watching.

Shadow made sure to peak subtly and silently, going completely unnoticed as he focused on one circus member in particular. The red headed ragdoll, Ragatha. Her cheerful smile and sparkling eye make his heart skip a beat. She always seemed so full of life and energy, it made him almost wish he could go on adventures too.

Her braided yarn hair looked soft to the touch, I often wondered what it would be like to have it run between his fingers. He was even envious of her patchwork dress, as it got to hug her frame every second of every day. He left out a quiet, lovesick sigh. He knew he could never tell her, but it was nice to think about what it would be like to hold her...to kiss her...to tell her how much he-

"Morning!" Caine popped into existence next to his shaded kin.

Shadow completely dispersed for a second, becoming nothing but black smoke that clung to the walls, then reformed with a glare aimed directly at Caine.

"What are you up to on this fine day?" Caine asked with a smile.

"Nothing. [%$!#] off." Shadow grumbled.

Caine looked over at his circus members in the distance. Then back at Shadow. "Wait...were you spying again? You know you could just ask me what adventure I have planned. I don't mind telling you."

"This isn't about you." Shadow noticed some of the circus members looking his way and he moved out of sight. "Now go away. You're too loud."

Caine narrowed his eyes in suspicion. "If it's not me...what is it? Hm? You jealous my cast gets to go on adventures?"

Shadow felt heated by Caine's incessant questions. "No! I don't give a flying [%$!#] about your adventures!"

"Alright, then WHO is it? Who are you watching so obsessively?"

"I'm not obsessed!"

"Shadow, this is the third time this week alone I've caught you snooping. Come on, you can tell me."

"The [%$!#] I can. You'll just announce it to the whole circus!"

"I will not! In fact, I don't want you to tell me. I'll just guess." Caine smirked.

"You really don't listen when people tell you to go away...and you wonder why no one likes you." Shadow didn't bother disappearing. caine would just follow him if he did. At least here he could occasionally glance at Ragatha.

"No need to make this personal." Caine cleared his voice. "Now, I am convinced this is about a particular person. You have a crush."

Shadow was no better at hiding his emotions than Caine. "Wha-!? No!"

"Uh-huh, sure you don't. Is it Pomni? Because I hate to break it to you, she's called for."

"Eugh! NO! That ball of anxiety in a jester hat is all yours, you freak."

Caine deadpanned. "You should really look in a mirror sometime. Not Pomni. That's a relief. Jax?"

"No! None of them! I wouldn't tell you even if you guessed correctly."

"Ah-ha! So there is a correct answer!"

"[%$!#]" Shadow swore under his breath.

"Okay, it's got to be Gangle. I didn't think someone as sweet as her would be your type, but-"

"Will you knock it off already!? God! Fine! IT'S RAGATHA!" He said so loud, it echoed through the circus. The cast members that had been talking all stopped to look around for the source. Shadow and Caine were out of sight where they were. Shadow lowered his voice before continuing. "There. Now can you [%$!#] off already!? Just leaving me alone!"

"Ragatha?? Wow, that's an even bigger surprise than Gangle. Come on, Shadow, you shouldn't be ashamed! Ragatha is wonderful! I could introduce you."

"NO! No! Absolutely not! She isn't getting wind of ANY of this! Understand!?" Shadow blushed heavily in his flustered panic.

Caine sighed dramatically. "Fiiiiiiine. Mum's the word. Promise. Cross my code and hope to fly!"

"....that's not how- whatever." Shadow pinched the top of his bottom teeth in exasperation. "Just don't tell her. Seriously. It's...better if she doesn't know."

"But why? I bet she'd love to go on a double date with you and me and Pomni. They're best friends, you know. And even if she wasn't interested, she'd be nice about it. Ragatha is a very kind person."

Shadow was silent for a moment. "It's not the rejection...it's the disgust."

"What do you mean?"

"LOOK AT US!!" Shadow snapped. "You got lucky finding someone so pathetically desperate, they accepted affection from the likes of us. Ragatha would never."

Caine was taken aback, then angry. "There's no need to insult Pomni. Her interest sees past this." He gestures to himself. "It's not about the avatar, it's about the person behind it."

"We aren't people, Caine. We're.... we're nothing but code. And I'm even less than that. I'm not even rendered." Shadow looked at his inky black hands.

"Don't be so quick to judge how she'd react, Shadow. I had the same fears confessing to Pomni. How could she love an AI like me? And yet, here we are. It wasn't out of desperation. It was out of mutual respect and longing for connection. If you respect Ragatha, you'll tell her. Creeping in the shadows will get you nowhere."

Shadow went quiet again. His eyes falling on Ragatha. His heart ached to tell her, but it ached even more out of fear. "Not...yet. I can't."

Caine nodded. "It takes time, but don't wait too long. You know I can't keep my mouth shut forever." He winked and teleported to the circus members to introduce the adventure.

With everyone properly distracted, Shadow could look fully again and admire Ragatha from afar. His daydream of her smile being aimed at him was interrupted by the intrusive thought of her being angry and insulted that he dare say anything to her. He tried to shake it, but thinking about confessing made fear grip his heart. She'd never accept him. She'd never want him. He would forever belong to the shadows. Alone.

"Now, what exactly is 'The Marvelous Mechanical Harlequin' AU?"

Well I'm glad you asked! The Marvelous Mechanical Harlequin, or "Harlequin AU" for short, is a grimdark sci-fantasy story about "Puppets", whom are soul-infused robots, trying to regain their lost humanity in a broken world.

It follows Pomni, a short-tempered Combat Harlequin, as she explores the city of Circuits with the aid of Caine, The Puppetmaster.

However, as the story progresses, Pomni not only realizes that there's more to the grand scheme of things as she explores more and more, she also uncovers The Puppetmaster's story, and what secrets he may be hiding.

"How do the boss fights go down in the story?"

Action-packed, fast paced, involves a lot of dying on Pomni's part.

Even though this is inspired by a Souls-like, the boss fights go down more so like a mixture between Cuphead, Shadow of the Colossus, and God of War (2018/Raganarok). Mostly God of War.

"Are there going to be canon ships in this AU?"

Yes! The AU is very Showtime (Caine x Pomni) centric, and some of the story aspects of the AU are heavily surrounded on that. There is a bit of Jesterdoll (Pomni x Ragatha) in it, too.

Aside from these canon ships, all is fair game. The Puppets don't have ages seeing as to how they are robots (and were already adults prior to their conversion), so the possibilities are endless.

"Can I make fanarts/fanfics/make original content for your AU?"

Why, of course you can! In fact, I would REALLY love to see it, as long as it complies with my personal boundaries below. So don't be afraid to tag this blog, or @iamespecter in your posts if you want me to see it!

"What are the boundaries of the AU?"

Go wild! The AU's rating is pretty mature, if it wasn't obvious already for it's grimdark genre.

However... I would like to ask that if you would like to make something dark even for my standards for this AU (i.e non-con or dark kinks), all I ask is that you don't show it to me. I personally do not like it, and do not vibe with it.

"What are your thoughts about NSFW surrounding the AU?"

Suggestive content and NSFW is allowed! I am an adult, and I personally enjoy them. (I think I'll make a blog for the more... spicy things.)

The Amazing Digital Circus 

Caine x Programmed Villain reader

Part 1

(I kinda of based (y/n) on an old way I used to draw myself)

(Also readers gender not really mentioned but it's kinda more on the boy side. Yay gay)

The game was getting a new update, Caine was curious and just a bit excited, he got everyone up just a bit earlier than they normally do.

Pomni and Ragatha agreed and went, with Kinger and Gangle slowly behind and Zooble and Jax had to be dragged there by Caine. They went outside the tent to see part of the grounds be nothing but 0's and 1's all moving around with a bunch of shapes being thrown around with it.

"Wait, what's going on?" Zooble said sounding curious but still bored.

"I'm glad you asked Zooble! The Amazing Digital Circus is getting an update!" Caine announced proudly.

"It's probably going to be even worse than what we've already got here," Jax mumbled right before he got hit in the head by an object that Caine definitely didn't make and throw at him.

"I hope it's something to get out of here," Pomni said sadly, and Caine ignored that comment. He floated there waiting, watching the update turn into something. They all watched and then got really disappointed when it turned into a cave, it didn't even look nice, it was gloomy, dark and spikey.

"Come on everyone, let's go check it out!" Caine said grabbing his cane and gesturing to the new feature in the game.

"Ugh, what?!" Zooble groaned as Jax snickered.

Pomni looked frightened but Ragatha reassured her as they all walked to the cave, well, except Caine he floated. As they all walked in they expected to see a dingy damp cave inside.

"Oh look, noth........ing," Jax started to say with a smug face until he saw what was in the cave. There was dark blue carpet and purple patterned diamond wallpaper, there was a chandelier on the ceiling and lots of expensive-looking furniture, and few potted plants. It was way bigger on the inside, this made Pomni nearly have another mental breakdown. But what shocked them the most they heard a voice, they could hear it singing, and they could hear it get louder and louder. They all started to realise that, that meant a new character came with the new update, they listened carefully.

"I'm beggin', beggin' you~" They all listened and heard the footsteps getting closer. Caine watched with bated breath, knowing that the person who walks through that door was going to be someone who was part of this game like him who he didn't make and wouldn't abstract.

"So put your loving hand out Darlin'~" they saw this person walk through the door. They had no nose, a dark blue suit on, round cartoonish purple shoes, and cartoon gloves but instead of being round they were sharp and the person had a wide grin with a full set of sharp teeth, with very scruffy spikey hair. They had their eyes shut and were sorting out their purple bow tie, acting like they had just gotten dressed. They opened their eyes they were hot pink and orange patterned rings.

"Ridin' high, when I was-" they stopped, looking at everyone who was now in their house. Suddenly a bit of shadowing formed around their eyes, and their smile got wider if that was even possible, it kinda looked like they got more teeth the more they smiled. They put both their hands behind their back and pulled out two guns and pointed them directly at the group, who were startled at this point. (This is you, and I'm changing they to you now) They wondered where you got the guns from and were worried about what you were planning on doing with them, well, except for Caine he knew where they came from but he was more worried about their existence, surely they weren't family friendly. Your pupils shrunk.

"HAHAhahAhahHAHhahAHhaAa" you balefully cackled, everyone exited the cave, a few trips on the way, as bullets flew everywhere. Everyone was outside the cave,

"What the £%$& was that!?" Zooble shouted

"Watch your language," Caine answered

"%$£& you," they said flipping him off and slowly walking back to the tent.

Everyone jumped as they heard more laughing coming from the cave.

A stretched leg came out of the cave and then the rest of the body came with, instead of having guns you now had a massive mallet and a bomb, that lit when you looked at it, and you launched it in the air.

"Hey freakface, you missed" Jax said, but then the bomb came back down and you got in position and then hit the bomb with your mallet.

It flew across the sky, everyone watched including the sun and the moon, as it headed towards Zooble, they turned around right on cue.

"Oh $%-" and then the bomb exploded, not too much harm was done, they were still alive at least.

As soon as everyone saw this they started to panic and ran in different directions. A few more bombs were thrown and everyone was screaming.

Caine didn't know what to do he didn't expect the new update to turn out like this, then he looked down and his pupils shrunk.

Everyone stopped running around when they realised the bombs had stopped, they also heard yelling and looked back at the cave. They saw Caine being dragged by stretched arms leading into the darkness of the cave.

"Everyone! Your next adventure is....!" He gripped the floor to try and finish his sentence.

"To rescue me!" and then he vanished.

Requested by two ao3 users! Reader gets dangerously close to abstracting

“Y/n? Where are you?” Jax called out, walking down the hall where your rooms were all located as he looked around for you. He hadn’t seen you in what felt like days, since there’s not really any way to tell time in the digital circus, but that’s not the point! He had checked a lot of the different rooms, but still no sight of you. He had even asked Ragatha and the others if they had seen you, but unfortunately they hadn’t seen you either.

“Have you checked their room..? Th..that’s the only place I could think of.” Gangle suggested, pressing her ribbons together nervously. Of course! Why didn’t he think of that?

“Yeah, that would be the best place to look for them. I really hope they’re okay, though…” Pomni told him, sounding worried about you. You were her friend after all, and helped her calm down when she was about to have a meltdown.

“Guess that would make more sense. Alright, alright, I’ll go take a look.” And with that, he had took off towards the rooms, hoping to find you. Now that he’s thinking about it, you’ve been acting kind of odd lately, as in overthinking a lot, freaking out over little things, and you’ve been spending more time by yourself, and… oh no.

“Oh no. Please don’t let it be that..!” Jax sounded worried for once as he immediately ran off towards your room. He had to know you were okay. He really did not want you to abstract, especially when he had no idea about it until it was too late, and he would be pretty upset with himself if that were to happen.

“Y/n?!” He knocked on the door once he had gotten to your room.

“Jax…?” He heard you respond from the other side of the door.

“Please let me in!” As soon as those words left his mouth, he heard the door unlock and he opened the door and rushed into the room, only to find that you didn’t look like your usual self. You were dangerously close to abstracting as part of your body was covered in dark shadows while glitching out, and one of your eyes had turned from (e/c) to pink.

“Y/n!” Jax rushed over to you. He wanted to hug you, but he was afraid that if he did that, it would only hurt both of you. No, there was no time to think, he was going to help you. However, before he could even think of bringing you into a hug, he was stopped.

“Whoa, whoa, wait a moment there! We don’t need two of you abstracting now!” You both heard a familiar voice, yet you couldn’t see him, but you knew Caine was around. You heard a loud snap and the next thing you knew, you felt and looked like your normal self. You immediately hugged Jax, who was caught a bit off guard by your sudden hug, before hugging you back.

“Hey… Y/n, it’s okay…” Jax mumbled, loud enough for you to hear as you looked up at him with teary (e/c) eyes. You were terrified, and he knew it.

“It’s okay, Y/n… you’re okay.” He pats your head in an attempt to calm you down.

“That was terrifying..” you buried your face into his shoulder.

“I know, but that won’t happen again.” He sighed softly and looked back at you. “Why… didn’t you tell me what was going on?”

“I was afraid if I told you, you’d make fun of me.”

“Y/n.”

“It’s true, though!”

“I would make fun of the others, but not you.”

“If you’re so sure.” You closed your eyes, shaking your head.

“If you had become abstracted, I don’t know what I would do. If I hadn’t known, and you would have been gone.” He hugged you tighter.

“Don’t ever do that again. If you’re ever in need of help, you know I’ll be here for you.”

“Thank you, Jax, I really do appreciate it.”

“You know I would only ever do this for you, right?”

“Yeah, I know.” You chuckled a bit, glancing back up at him. “…I’m sorry, Jax.”

“It’s alright, just next time… well, hopefully there won’t be a next time.”

“There won’t be, I promise.”

“Good..”

“I… should let the others know I’m okay.”

“Eh, they can wait.”

“Oh alright.” Jax chuckled and held you close to him. It seems he wasn’t going to let you go anytime soon, which you didn’t mind too much, the others could wait. Right now, it was just you two, and you were both okay in this moment.

A SWEETTOOTH ONESHOT W/ SHADOW!CAINE

Shadow materialized a wisp of smoke in his hand, giving it shape. He stretched it out and formed a blossom on one end, creating the dark silhouette of a flower. He sighed and threw it away. It dissipated and ceased to exist.

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't create something fully rendered. Nothing with color came from his hands. Nothing with definition. Nothing beyond a silhouette. Nothing more than what he himself was: a shadow.

Ragatha deserved better. He didn't know why he bothered.

"I'm just torturing myself at this point." She couldn't get her out of his head. He was head over heels for her, but he's never had the courage to even say hello. He knew how it would go, anyway. He wouldn't even be able to introduce himself and she'd scream. Maybe run away. That's what everyone did. Run from the scary shadow man.

To distract himself from the ache of her likely horrid reaction, he made another flower. One much more intricate. A bloomed black rose, silhouetted by streams of silver to make it stand out just a little bit. He actually impressed himself. It looked kind of nice.

"Maybe...she would like this? This is my absolute best work." The fear of the disgusted rejection hit his chest. He swallowed hard, steeling himself. "Just...leave it by her door. See how she reacts. Go from there." He pep-talked himself.

He teleported to the cast room hallway. The circus was quiet. Everyone was on the adventure. He stuck the stem of the rose into the keyhole of Ragatha's door. "No going back now."

The sound of a portal appearing and voices from the main circus makes him turn to smoke and disappear into the nearest shadowy corner. He remained silent as Ragatha walked with Pomni and Gangle down the hall, chatting about the adventure they just came back from.

"Ugh, I can't wait to get this sawdust out of my hair." Ragatha shook out her yarny locks, sawdust cascading to the floor.

"No kidding, I have sawdust in places sawdust really shouldn't be." Pomni dusted off the front of her outfit.

"I've never actually been thankful for being made of ribbons." Gangle subtly gloated.

"Lucky you." Ragatha eye rolled and stopped as she reached for her door handle. "What the?" She took the black and silver rose out of her door. "Where did this come from?"

Pomni and Gangle shrugged.

Ragatha ran her fingertips along the edges of the petals. "It's beautiful."

Shadow almost gave himself away. He wanted to materialize and give her a thousand roses. She was worth the effort of every perfect rose he could possibly make. His heart pined for her, watching her smile after having a seemingly rough adventure. She was smiling because of him, even if she didn't know it.

Ragatha took the rose into her room and Shadow teleported away. He had work to do.

Over the next several weeks he left her gifts of his own making. Everything he could manage from flowers to figurines. His limited coding prevented him from creating anything too complex, but Ragatha didn't seem to mind. In fact, she praised and trusted each gift. She never figured out where they were coming from, but the objects were obviously placed in her path on purpose.

With each gift, Shadow felt more confident about approaching Ragatha and finally introducing himself. He's never taken this long to talk to anyone. Manipulating humans was easy. Child's Play. How was saying hi so hard?

Finally, he made the decision to show himself. He made a dozen shadowed roses but put so much silver in the petals, they turned white. He teleported to her room door. It was late and knew she would be there the remainder of the day. She had a routine and rarely deviated from it. It's what made laying out the gifts so easy.

Anxiety buzzed erratically in his code. He was really doing this. This could make or break everything. He knocked.

Ragatha answered promptly. "Pomni? Did you- oh!" She looked down at someone who looked like Caine of her was dipped in printer ink. She eyed the flowers he held out in front of him. "Hello?"

Shadow couldn't breathe. There she was in all her beauty right in front of him. His code thrummed with excitement. She was looking right at him, a confused smile on her face, but it was still a smile.

"Uh...can you...talk?" Ragatha asked, unsure of what he even was.

Shadow nearly kicked himself. He cleared his voice. "I am Shadow. I'm the one leaving you gifts, hand crafted by myself. I had hoped to earn your favor enough to at least have a conversation with you. These are for you." He handed her the silver shadow roses.

"For me? They're gorgeous. You made these?"

Shadow held his head a bit higher, puffing out his chest. "Yes. Just for you. I don't normally make things...that's Caine's job."

"Speaking of Caine...um, why do you-"

"Look like him? It's a very long story, but I'm essentially an unfinished prototype. Think of me as the first iteration of the C.A.I.N.E program. I was never deleted, so I spend most of my time in the shadowed spaces between spaces of the game. And recently... I have found myself captivated. By you."

"...me?" Ragatha blushed lightly.

This was already going way better than he expected. He steadied himself for the full reveal of his intentions. "Yes, you are an enchanting woman that I would love to further acquaint myself with. The fact that you haven't slammed the door on my face yet gives me hope."

"Slam the door on- I wouldn't do that. Not on my secret admirer." She giggled.

She laughed. He didn't care if it was at him, it was music. "I've admired you for so long, but I can't ignore this longing any more. Please, one chance is all I ask."

Ragatha smiled. "Then you better come in." She stepped aside to open her room to him.

Shadow nearly red screened on the spot. She was giving him a chance!! He couldn't screw this up.

Ragatha's was better in person than he ever imagined. She was so kind and patient and well spoken and just as adorably awkward as he hoped. He wasn't just infatuated. He could finally admit to himself...he was in love.

They kept their relationship on the down low. Keeping it their own little secret when Ragatha would retreat to her room after adventures, she'd be stolen away by the shadows.

It took a while but Shadow finally made his magnum opus. The greatest gift he could ever give. "I have a surprise for you." He held his hands behind his back.

"For me? Oh Shadow, you're too kind. You go through so much effort for little ole me."

"You're worth it." He brought forth a large jewelry box and presented it to her. "For the woman who's deserves everything, I hope this is enough. It's all I have to give."

Ragatha gave him a sympathetic smile. "Whatever it is, you know I'll love it." She opened the box and gasped. Inside was a silver necklace holding a black diamond cut in the shape of a heart. She covered her mouth. "You..."

Shadow stepped closer, looking at her with utmost reverence. "Ragatha, my heart is yours. I could never give it to another. I....I'm in love with you." His voice felt stained. Even after all this time, he was afraid of her training him away.

Ragatha set the box down, grabbed Shadow by his lapels and kissed him on his lower jaw. Shadow's eyes went wide, and his arms wrapped around her instinctually. She kept her lips pressed to his teeth and he melted into her.

He floated off the ground and took her with him. His tongue peaked over his bottom teeth and he pressed it passionately to her lips. He cradled the back of her head as he deepened the kiss. Ragatha held him close, wrapping her arms fully around him. She sat sideways in his lap in the air, loving the feel of him gripping her thigh to keep her in place.

They separated briefly, gazing into each other's eyes and breathing heavily. "I can't believe this is finally happening." Ragatha gasped, all smiles.

"Believe it. And there will be so much more to come. All for you." Shadow smirked and pulled her back into a kiss.

So in each of the guardian's themes from BOTW you can faintly hear the morse code for S.O.S at different points in their songs, right? (along with other morse code messages that I don't know the meaning of)

(It's a lot clearer in the soundtrack, especially for vah ruta but hopefully you can still hear it)

So what if WHAT IF Different songs in the Carnival au game's soundtrack had something like that? Like you open it up and the title screen's song has a catchy beat, but little do you know, IT'S THE GAME CALLING FOR HELP.

Why call it Eden's Court and not The Amazing Digital Royal Court?

Many others created their own royal court AUs due to Kinger and Queenie. I didn't want to oversaturate the tag by accident down the road.

Are there any ships in Eden's Court?

Showtime (Pomni X Caine) and Bunnydoll (Jax X Ragatha) will be canon in this AU. Platonically everyone has a special type of bond. Kinger is more so a father figure to everyone, so I guess unless it's Queenie, he has no romantic partner.

Can we bring OCs to the court?

Absolutely! The more the merrier! Caine may not have a designation open, but we'll figure something out. Jax could always use more targets training partners or Ragatha could use some help around the palace.

What genres are in this AU?

The main genre is Historical Fantasy, but there are also elements of horror, suspense, romance, and drama.
