the juanki/rafa lore is fascinating omg

ISN'T IT WILD. today felt like. scripted. backstory episode dropped just in time for the narrative climax.

but their relationship is really SO fascinating. there's all these little tidbits the round-up didn't have space for, stuff like--juanki's asked about their relationship at a cincy presser and is like haha it's fine we're meeting for golf today. and then the next day he's back on message like, stop talking about rafa. rafa is speaking up in juanki's defense when he's left out of the madrid main draw, and then they're barely talking next time they're both at davis cup. even nowadays they are so clearly on the same page cheering for carlitos! …as long AS they are cheering for carlitos. i want a timer to know how long they can hold a conversation before one of them says something that breaks the get-along spell.

idk i just keep thinking that--i mean what IF that hideous run of bad luck (chicken pox, broken rib, maybe some poor decision-making) hadn't destroyed juanki at his peak. i would be so curious to know if rafa's approach would have been different if juanki had been more of a threat on the court in those first formative years on tour--more like he felt about moya or roger. instead he just leapfrogged right over him and i think that's what got under juanki's skin so bad, not just that this kid usurped his place but that he didn't even like. notice him there.

(i was just talking with my friend whose take on rafa's side of this is that the obvious bad feeling probably bothered him a lot more coming from a spaniard than it would have otherwise. like if it was… i can't think of a good example. marat safin? a former world no. 1 who was never much of a threat to him on court. --if it was marat safin who got snippy in the media and cold-shouldered him in person then lol whatever. but at home he wanted to be loved. and juan carlos did not love him.)

I know I complain a lot here about being a teacher, but being an "obviously" gay teacher has promoted the healthiest e most heart-warming experiences I could ever dream of having with my students.

Some examples:

Two girls (who are a couple) reaching out to me when one of their parents found out they were dating and freaked out, so they wanted/needed an adult to comfort them;

A student who was moving to another country telling me she wanted to come out to her extended family that was staying behind, and then telling me she did it;

THEIR SWEET LITTLE FACES WHEN THEY SAW ME AND MY GIRLFRIEND AT A SCHOOL EVENT (I legit saw heart eyes that day)

A middle schooler waiting excitedly to tell me she finally kissed the person she liked (because her parents are homophobic and she can't share that part of herself with them)

A high schooler on the first day of class asking me, "Teacher, what pronouns do you go by?" (Because I'm not traditionally feminine so he thought it was best to ask than assume)

i think you have more knowledge about tennis and i like your takes so i felt like asking, do you remember any of big 3 fumbling like carlos has since post olympics before they became big 3? he's only 21 and has lots to learn i do have faith in him but i want to know what's it like to follow a player who is still in the process of finding stability in his game and learning ropes of how to become and maintain being a champion

i have watched all big 3 and serena, sharapova play but they were already the best polished champions by then and of course it is a given in real life sports champions don't always win neither are they made in one night out of nowhere, i just felt like wanting to know your thoughts about carlos as a next spanish champion people want him to be

hey since the olympics carlos did win beijing and carry team europe to win laver cup + team spain to advance in davis. he’s doing his bit. i have no excuse for cincy+uso other than he was probably exhausted after channel slam and olympics. as for today i’m not paying too much attention but i have word that he is very sick so i don’t see why anyone should freak out about his general level when clearly there’s other temporary factors here. also relax like you said he’s only 21 and yet he literally won two slams this year. he’s fine he’s literally fine.

as for the big three/serena/sharapova/other greats i can’t reallyyy comment on that because i’ve only been actively paying attention to tennis for a year so i will defer to anyone else who actually watched them in the early 00s. i will say that to the best of my knowledge, their setbacks were more injury related (like rafa in 2009) rather than just sort of flopping (which isn’t what carlos is doing but whatever). or like novak simply took longer to get established on the tour and wasn’t the teen phenom like rafa or carlos was. you could argue that 2013/2014 was not among rogers stronger years (he won 6 titles in those two years with most success coming at the end of 2014) so that shows that even the greats are not infallible even during their peak era.

basically just relax he is fine and he will be fine. people were saying the same about him last year because he didn’t win anything between wimbledon and indian wells. and also the year before between uso and rio. his game will mature and he will win more but he has also won so so so much already
