wowowowowow, those self-ties are amazing! do you have any resources or tips for learning? it's one of my goals this year to learn self tie and get better at ropeplay in general

This was the best tutorial I found for those ties specifically. I haven't really done much else because I wanted to get really good the futomomo tie first. But also, in general, I like the way this guy teaches them, its pretty easy to follow and he goes over safety tips every time. Its a shame that he doesn't create content anymore, but he does have a playlist for shibari and rope stuff that includes a lot of self tie tutorials.

I once had a friend argue that, if my characters were gods, Edgar would be the god of creation. and I see where they're coming from, but Edgar really isn't artistically inclined, so at MOST he'd be the god of logical creation. my brain actually views him as some kind of mixture between Hestia and Haephestus (or however you spell his name). god of the family and the home and platonic love, creator of anything metal, god of intelligence and wit

Rae would be the god of travel, music, and entertainers- basically. bard god. you'd see little shrines everywhere along frequently traveled roads and passageways; if you bring an offering, and it could be of anything from gold to a wish, he's supposedly going to help protect you as you travel. and people pray to him and worship the night before a big show. Rae's boyfriend, Violet, would be the goddess of creation in the painter, author, and sculptor sense.

Jack would be the god of war and ignorance and probably the person who created alcohol and parties lmao. Chuck would also be the embodiment of everything evil, but also very stupid so it's more like his underlings run the show than anything else.

Red.... Red would be a minor god of family, specifically blended/mixed families, families out of unusual circumstance, and families strengthened by tragedy. he'd also be the god of HEALTHY masculinity, and therefore also worshipped by a lot of trans men because of that and his own status as a trans man

Merlot, his sister, would be the goddess of lesbians and distant family members, e.g. cousins you only hear about on holidays and such. she and Red also have a slight alcohol theme to them too but it's definitely less shitfaced drunk and more beer and wine to go with food

Orange would be the goddess of the seamstress and minor goddess of time. since yk, the "fabric of time". she's in the same wheelhouse as Rae and Violet because of her creation affinity. think Arachne, but Arachne was Athena all along. she's also the goddess of self-actualization and determination

Green would be the god of wealth and the god of parties that WON'T end in someone dying. and also another minor god for trans people because or being a gnc trans man. he's also the god of generosity and patronage, so he's sort of in the same area as Rae and them. but he's not the artist, he's the one COMMISSIONING the artist

literally none of my characters could be trusted with godhood except for maybe Edgar and Rae. and Chuck if his job was to be the god of terrible awful horrific murder and other unspeakable things

What Does the New Madame Web Movie Mean for the Spider-Verse?

When there’s casting news about an upcoming superhero movie, the hoped response is something along the lines of a fist pump and some level of, “Hey, awesome!” You’re always going to hit on a character somebody’s interested in. I mean, I for one was excited about Vin Diesel as Bloodshot until I actually watched the movie. There were certainly enough Jack Kirby fans psyched about Eternals. People were hyped about John Cena as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad the moment he was announced.

But when news hit that Dakota Johnson is set to star in a movie about Madame Web? That’s the kind of news that has you pause for a moment before asking, “Really? Are you sure?” Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe somebody out there did a backflip over this news. The rest of us are just scratching our heads, because…what in the world?

To rewind, this all stems back from the time in-between Marvel’s Avengers doing crazy good box office and Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man 2 doing mediocre box office. Learning the wrong lesson from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s success, Sony decided to go absolutely ham with their cinematic hold on Spider-Man. Not only did they want to do sequels, but spinoffs out the wazoo, including Sinister Six, an Aunt May spy movie, and a team-up between Black Cat and Silver Sable. They backed off due to Amazing Spider-Man 2’s backlash, but the success of Venom made them realize that Parker-adjacent movies could succeed. We already had a Venom sequel, but now we have Morbius on the way and a Kraven the Hunter movie in the making.

And now, Madame Web. Huh.

It isn’t that she’s a bad character. It’s just that she’s a very limited character in terms of what you’d expect from a superhero movie. Introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #210 back in 1980, Madame Web has since been a quasi-regular supporting character in Spider-Man stories. She’s mostly remembered for her recurring role in the 90s Spider-Man animated series (voiced by Joan Lee, Stan’s wife), where she mostly just gave cryptic exposition to our friendly neighborhood hero.

While gifted in mind powers, Madame Web was physically held back via her blindness and her need to be hooked up to a life support machine. At least, that’s the original Madame Web, Cassandra Webb. Chances are, we’re not going to be getting the elderly Cassandra in our movie.

No, in recent years, Cassandra was killed off, but handed off her powers to Julia Carpenter, who is far more age appropriate to be played by Dakota Johnson. Debuting in Secret Wars #6 back in 1984, Julia Carpenter was the second Spider-Woman. It’s rather weird to talk about her potentially getting her own starring role, considering we haven’t seen the original and far more famous Spider-Woman Jessica Drew hit the big screen…although we will soon enough. Even though Jessica has extremely little connection to Spider-Man’s section of Marvel Comics outside of the name, she is part of Sony’s hold on arachnid-based heroes and will be showing up in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as played by Issa Rae.

As an aside, apparently the MCU can use Jessica Drew as a character as long as they don’t give her a spider gimmick. Kind of like how they were allowed to use Quicksilver as long as he wasn’t referred to as a mutant. So perhaps this is just a Spider-Woman movie with a different name. If Spider-Woman is going to be a big part in Sony���s Spider-Verse property, it would make sense to call this hero something else to make things a little less confusing. Sure, Julia Carpenter also called herself Arachne for a time, but Madame Web sounds way more marketable.

Plus, it doesn’t make me think of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. There was a musical number about the spider goddess Arachne being jealous about her inability to wear shoes. This happened and I have to live with it.

In the comics, Julia was an unwilling experiment in a secret government organization’s attempt to recreate Spider-Man’s powers. Julia’s powers aren’t exactly like Peter Parker’s, but they are way closer than whatever Jessica Drew has going on. Even before becoming the second Madame Web, some of Julia’s powers were mind-based, specifically her ability to create webbing out of psychokinetic energy.

The recent increase in Spider-Man multiverse movies does also put Madame Web into question. Madame Web is to inter-dimensional Spider-Man team-ups what Nick Fury is to the Avengers. The big payoff of her appearance in the Spider-Man animated series was putting together an earlier take on Into the Spider-Verse as various Peter Parkers had to team up against Spider-Carnage. Madame Web played the same role in the 2010 video game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, which had Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, and Spider-Man Noir work together under her guidance. Then the Julia Carpenter version of the character appeared in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon to aid Peter Parker and Miles Morales in a universe-spanning adventure.

We have at least two Spider-Verse movies on the menu. Maybe Madame Web will somehow tie into that. It would be a leap to mix animated and live-action narratives, but, well… *gestures at Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett*

Unfortunately, unlike the protagonist, I’m not a precog, so I don’t have the answer on what Madame Web truly will be. I’m just interested in seeing what director SJ Clarkson could possibly have planned.

OTP Relationship Asks

1. Who most initiates PDA?

ArchAegis (Rae & Warren): It used to be Rae, but after the whole Apocalypse ordeal, Warren starts being more open with affection in public (partially bc he wants people to see that he's not a weapon like they made him to be, and partially bc the experience showed him how important Rae really is to him)

Arachne (Ophelia & Peter): Peter for sure. Ophelia doesn't mind physical contact when it comes from someone she trusts, but she's still not the best at remembering to initiate physical contact.

7. Who is more sentimental?

ArchAegis: Rae. Warren doesn't enjoy thinking about the past as much, since he tends to focus more on the bad things, but Rae's more the type to see the glimmers of hope throughout and find little moments to appreciate.

Arachne: Ophelia, though she doesn't show it often. She holds onto a lot of memories and moments from her past, and those stay incredibly close to her heart, but it's rare that she shares these with others.

15. Who is more likely to make an impulsive decision and who is the voice of reason?

ArchAegis: They're both impulsive, but Rae is more impulsive by far. If someone's in danger and she thinks she can make even a modicum of difference, all regard for her own personal safety is thrown out the window. It's actually how they met!

Arachne: They're both an even mix, and it really depends on the circumstance. When it comes to a quieter, more practical decision, Ophelia is the type to weigh all the options while Peter doesn't always have the patience to think it through. But out on the battlefield, Ophelia is the first to jump in while Peter usually takes an extra moment to think of a plan.

21. Which of the two is quick to speak and which one is quick to listen?

ArchAegis: Rae definitely has more to say, and Warren loves to hear her talk about her day, her work, anything she found interesting, all of it. She of course loves listening to him speak as well, but he doesn't collect stories about the little moments the way she does.

Arachne: Again, an even mix. They absolutely use each other as the "coder's rubber duck" when they're stuck on a project, and will talk the other one through the whole thing (even if they've heard it a dozen times before) because that sometimes helps unstick the problems. When it comes to personal things though, like just catching up on the day, Peter's the chattier one.

35. What movies do they enjoy watching most?

ArchAegis: I feel like they're the type to just show up at the movie theatre and buy a ticket for whatever's playing without checking the listings ahead of time. I do feel like they'd be more the action-adventure type when it comes to genre - nothing hardcore horror, and no smushy romance, but anything else is pretty much fair game.

Arachne: Ophelia's actually really fond of cheesy comedies or romcoms, since they can entertain her without needing too much brainpower (the last thing she wants after a long day of work is to do more thinking just to understand the movie she's watching). I also think they'd enjoy finding the absolute shittiest movies possible and subjecting each other to them - I used to do this with my best friend in high school, we called them "bad movie dates", and it's the best thing ever.

40. Who makes the other smile with almost no effort at all?

ArchAegis: Both of them, but there's just something about Rae that just makes Warren smile no matter what. He just feels so comfortable with her, and he's really grateful she's in his life, it's so easy for her to make him smile.

Arachne: Peter's an absolute genius at making Olly smile and laugh. It's like he's on a mission for it, especially since he knows how lonely and depressed she was for a good chunk of her life, so he makes it a point to see her smile as often as he can. It doesn't usually take much :)
