Top Ten Underrated (Or At Least in My Opinion) Ensemble Comedies
It’s time for me to talk about all the ensemble comedies that don’t get the credit they deserve.
I’m a fan of top ten lists and can spend a whole day watching them on YouTube—in fact, I have. But whenever I see a list of amazing sitcoms/comedies the same shows are given credit for being AMAZING, GROUNDBREAKING, HISTORY-MAKING, and bleh.
I think we all know the definition of an ensemble comedy, but in case you don’t:
Ensemble acting noun
1.an approach to acting that aims for a unified effect achieved by all members of a cast working together on behalf of the play, rather than emphasizing individual performances.
With all that out of the way, let’s move on to the list!
#9 A Different World
*queue the theme music* and sing along because I know you know the words.
I feel like I don’t have to spend a lot of time explaining A Different World because it’s such a classic. But for those of you who don’t know, A different World is a college-based comedy that premiered in 1987. the show takes place at the unfortunately fictional Hillman College--a historically black college in the south. As a college grad I can tell you that I would have had a lot more fun if I had gone to a school like Hillman.
The show is a spin-off of The Cosby Show but don’t let that put you off. The first season follows Denise Huxtable--arguably the coolest of most fashionable of the Cobsy children--and her journey through her sophomore year at Hillman. Denise is played by Lisa Bonet who is also very cool looking in real life. She’s married to that big guy from Game of Thrones who’s name doesn’t matter because this isn’t about him.
During Denise’s first year we’re introduced to so many unforgettable and classic characters.
Whitley Gilbert the southern belle. A woman of high-class and sophisticated tastes glides across the campus and demands attention everywhere she goes played by the just as classy Jasmine Guy.
Dwayne Wayne played by Kadeem Hardison made those flip up sunglasses iconic. At first portrayed as a typical string-bean college guy hitting on every woman he came across, but also head over heels in love with just one girl. In the first season that girl was Denise was that girl, but after Bonet’s departure from the show he found his soulmate in another.
Jaleesa Vinson played by Dawn Lewis is meant to be this intimidating woman upon first appearance. She’s tall, older than most students, she’s been married before, and she’s all business--taking her school work very seriously. But in reality she’s this sweet, goofy, and ambitious woman.
Sinbad (yes, Sinbad) played Coach Walter Oakes and was actually pretty hilarious. It’s one of those you have to see it to believe it sort of things. He was there as a voice of reason for the men around campus. A sort of guiding light and moral high-ground for them when feeling lost.
Ron Johnson played by Darryl M. Bell was a comic relief for most of the series. He was also Dwayne’s right hand man through it all and starred in the main role in one of the show’s most poignant episodes “Cat’s in the Cradle.”
The first season had many other characters that were meant to be season regulars such as Marisa Tomei as Maggie Lauten and Loretta Devine as Stevie Rallen, but due to changes going into season two they either left the show or were just removed to bring other characters to the forefront.
Season two introduced us to Freddie Brooks played by Cree Summers also known as the woman who voiced your childhood. Bringing characters to life such as Susie Carmichael from Rugrats and Numbuh Five from Codename: Kids Next Door. Freddie is admittedly problematic but was the embodiment of the activist student.
We also got my personal favorite character whom I refer to as “Big Sister Dark and Lovely” Kimberly Reese played by Charnele Brown. Smart, beautiful, ambitious, great friend, complex, etc. Kim had it all. She became Whitley’s best friend and confidante as the series went on.
Characters such as Colonel Bradford Taylor and Mr. Gaines also became series regulars by the second and third seasons. By the end of the series the cast also included Jada Pinkett, Ajai Sanders, and Karen Malina White.
As you can see, this ensemble included many familiar faces and iconic characters over their six seasons. These characters spanned so many different age groups, cliques, personalities, economic classes, and cultures that there was a little something for everyone when they watched. The series made a point to talk about current issues that affected students and black people at the time it aired, but these discussions are still relevant today. A Different World is worth a watch by everyone so it can leave its mark on a new generation.

BBRae Week 2018 - Day 2
Pet Names
Cyborg stared unblinking at the pair across the table. To his right, Robin and Starfire stared in much the same way, though Starfire’s silence was out of apparent and obvious joy. The objects of their attention were seemingly oblivious to the difficulty they were causing, too caught up in, well… canoodling.
Beast Boy and Raven were wrapped in each other’s arms, nuzzling each other’s necks and whispering in each other’s ears. Cyborg twitched.
“So you guys are sure you’re together?” he asked. Beast Boy looked up with a grin.
“Yup. She’s my little purple gumdrop, soft and sweet,” he sang. Raven giggled - GIGGLED!
“And he’s my Beastie-boo-bear.” Cyborg swore if he still had an entirely human gastric system, he would have thrown up. Indeed, Robin looked like his bile was rising.
“Friends, I am delighted you have discovered romance with each other,” Starfire cheered.
“Thank you, Starfire,” Raven said. “It’s amazing to think Beast Boy is my… Beast Bae.”
“Ugh.” Cyborg shuddered. “Not to be a downer but, that is definitely you, right? Not one of your emotion selves at the wheel?” he asked. For a moment, Raven’s blissful attitude vanished and she fixed Cyborg with a chilling glare, a glint of red in her eyes. “Okay, okay, it’s you.”
The next few days didn’t make their behaviour any less disturbing: nobody ever saw one without the other, there were always at least holding hands and the pet names - oh, the pet names - just got worse and worse.
“Ravencakes.”
“Beasty-weasty.”
“Birdy-girl.”
“Adora-Boy.”
They never seemed to repeat and so Cyborg could never get used to one. Finally, he was pushed too far when Starfire spoke to the happy couple, still congratulating them whenever she saw them. Beast Boy answered first.
“Thanks, Star. She’s my little Rae-Rae of sunshine,” he said.
“And he’s my big green teddy-weddy bearie-boo,” Raven added. Cyborg snapped, standing so quickly from his position on the couch the magazine in his lap smacked into the window.
“That’s it! I can’t take it! Are you guys kidding me? Are you guys gosh darn frickin’ hecking ding dong dang kidding me?!” he cried, voice cracking, Silence filled the room. Starfire watched Raven carefully, wary of her responding to Cyborg’s tantrum with one of her own. Cyborg watched Beast Boy - the boy had a temper all his own, especially when he was defending someone he was close to, and these days he seemed closer to Raven than anyone. However, to his surprise, Beast Boy doubled over in loud, reckless laughter.
“Is this an Earth custom I have missed?” Starfire asked. Cyborg subtly shook his head, as confused as she was, maybe even more so when Raven started to chuckle as well. Beast Boy tumbled over onto his side, still laughing but trying to speak.
“I… I told you… I told you Cyborg would go first!” he gasped. Raven, watching him with a knowing smile, nodded.
“You were right. I was sure Robin wouldn’t be able to leave it alone and would start asking questions,” she said. “You win. I lose.” Cyborg’s confusion evaporated in a red, angry cloud that descended in front of his eyes, at least that’s how it felt.
“This. Was. All. A. BET!!!???” he roared. Unconcerned, Beast Boy looked up at him from the floor.
“Yup. And I won!” he crowed, jerking a victorious thumb at himself.
“I don’t believe you guys!” Cyborg whined. “You faked all that just for a bet? I should’ve known you guys would never-”
“That part’s true,” Raven said, much more like her usual self.
“Uhh… what?” Cyborg said.
“The names and the PDAs, they were for the bet, but Beast Boy and I really are together,” Raven said. Cyborg eyed her sideways before a sly grin spread across his face.
“You aren’t fooling me again so easily, Rae-Rae,” he said, wagging his finger at her. At this, Raven rolled her eyes, knelt beside the still-prone Beast Boy, fisted her hands in the fabric of his uniform and pulled him to her, kissing him passionately yet easily enough to see it certainly wasn’t the first time they had done so.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve pushed my boundaries quite far enough for now and I’m ready for some me time,” Raven said. Beast Boy, still held by Raven’s hands, smiled cheerily at her.
“See ya later, Rae.” Raven smiled fondly and lay her hand on his cheek.
“Sooner, if I can help it, Garfield,” she said before letting him fall back to the floor and vanishing with a flourish of her black energy. Beast Boy chuckled on the floor.
“She’s something else, right?” he said, mostly to himself. Cyborg sat back on the couch, sulking.
“So what is it you get?” he asked.
“Huh?”
“What do you get for winning the bet?”
“Oh. Ummm I guess we forgot to decide on that sooooooo… we just did it for fun?”
“…”
“Cy?”
“I… need to go somewhere where you’re not,” Cyborg said, marching straight out the door to his car, planning on finding somewhere quiet he could scream for an hour or so. Eventually he would consider the prank an enviable success and, though he had to put up with a week of retaliation pranks, Beast Boy never doubted it had been worth the effort.
THE END

and why it's the show everyone wants, but the show everyone is ignoring.
Too often people complain about how there's a lack of diversity and positive representation of women and sexuality on television. We also want a series that's smart, funny, poignant, and feminist. I get it. As a black, plus sized feminist woman with a non-linear sexuality, I would love to see more women who look like me on television just being funny.
(Here's looking at you Gabourey Sidibe in Difficult People.)
But those same people watch the same shows every year. You know what shows I'm talking about. The unfunny fantasy dramas that everyone live tweets. But if you're like me then fantasy shows aren't your thing, and your life is already such a mess that you can't emotionally handle a drama. You love comedy because you love to laugh. Like Laugh Out Loud laugh instead of a tiny chuckle at the latest Netflix original gentle comedy that you glance up at between scrolling through the Twitter feed on your phone.
You long for the days of the sitcom where you sat down during primetime and laughed for twenty-two minutes at a time. If Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are two of your favorite shows to binge then have I got a show for you!
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend!
Rachel Bloom plays Rebecca Bunch, a genius, and surprisingly woke, lawyer from New York who moves to West Covina, California to pursue her teenage crush Joshua Felix Chan. But before you rag on it for being antifeminist (I thought that at first too. Who wants to watch a woman chase a man for an entire series run?) the show also touches on important issues such as mental health and the pursuit of happiness.
Other characters include sarcastic, and often-times Rebecca's voice of reason, Paula Proctor.
Heather Davis—the blunt, young twentysomething and Rebecca's neighbor.
Valencia Perez—the hot, sometimes vain yoga instructor and Josh's girlfriend.
Darryl Whitefeather—eccentric, extra, and bisexual boss of Rebecca Bunch.
And so many others worth mentioning, but I can't list them all or this post will be way too long!
This show is the cool drink of water on a long trek through the barren dessert that we all need. I can't give this show enough praise for its portrayals of female sexuality, mental health, relationships, the female orgasm, and so many other topics.
And the best part...it's a musical!
For those of you who don't like spontaneous musical numbers (even though people do that in real life) just know that the songs aren't your typical musical outburst. It's not like Grease or Les Mis. The songs are clever and meta. They parody pop culture as well as musical theater classics, so there's something for everyone.
The reason this show probably fell under your radar for so long (It's been on since October 2015) is because it gets buried under the CW's other shows. When people think of the CW they probably think of shows like The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, Riverdale, The 100, and other action/adventure shows that are heavily advertised as some of their best shows. When I first heard of it, I thought it was just one of those weird shows that the CW would cancel after a while and it would be like it never existed.
Back in those days I only watched the CW to catch Jane the Virgin which came on right after Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, so I only ever saw the last thirty seconds of each episode. Then one day the first season popped up on my recommended shows on Netflix as a comedy with a strong female lead (Netflix gets me) and I decided to give it a shot. My life has been forever changed.
Don't let this show fall under your radar any longer. The first two seasons are available on Netflix right now! And season three is currently airing on the CW (Dare to Defy) Friday's at 8/7c right before Jane the Virgin, so set your DVR and see what Rebecca Bunch is up to. You won't regret it.

Ensemble acting noun
1.an approach to acting that aims for a unified effect achieved by all members of a cast working together on behalf of the play, rather than emphasizing individual performances.
With all that out of the way, let’s move on to the list!
#10 Living Single
*queue theme music*
This was Friends before Friends was a thing. In fact, it’s the show Friends ripped off. Before you compose a strongly-worded comment about how amazing Friends is I want to say that I love Friends more than anyone. I quote episodes daily, and I can recite “The One Where Ross Got High” from memory, but we all need to take a moment and acknowledge that Living Single not only came first but they did many things so much better.
For example, Maxine and Kyle vs. Ross and Rachel—the will-they-won’t-they couple done right.
Maxine and Kyle had a dynamic of bickering, teasing, and sometimes even loathing that was immediately established as an essential part of the series. They were also two sensual characters which I think is important to point out in comparison to the sexual character—the Joey Tribiani’s, Barney Stintsons, and Schmidt’s of the series. This could have been messy because as the only two dark-skinned main cast members, making Kyle and Maxine the sexual characters could have bordered on stereotyping since dark-skinned black people tend to be hyper-sexualized more than those with lighter skin. No, Kyle and Maxine were sensual as individuals and as a couple.
Kyle Barker played by T.C. Carson had the smooth baritone voice and an elegant diction whenever he spoke that could make any grown woman swoon. He was a bit of a ladies man but the only thing he loved more than women was himself. He took pride in his work and his wardrobe and had a high opinion about a lot of things. Like a lot.
Maxine Shaw played by Erika Alexander was direct, blunt, intelligent, strong, albeit emotionally unavailable at times, but everything I wanted to be when I grew up because despite all that she commanded respect when she walked into a room. Although she wasn’t the most traditionally feminine of her friends, when it came to her attitude, she still caught the attention of men. Any man who didn’t like her attitude wasn’t worth her time. Maxine was my everything!
When these two came together the banter was always hilarious with an undertone of sexual tension without ever bringing up sex which is impressive. The best part was that once they hooked up their dynamic didn’t change. That’s always the worst part of the will-they-won’t-they couple--the two finally getting together, their dynamic changes, and therefore the dynamic of the show changes to something different (e.g. Ted and Robin in How I Met Your Mother). But these two as a couple still bickered, were still funny, and on top of that their relationship was sexy but still romantic.
But let’s not forget about everyone else.
Khadijah James played by Queen Latifa (yes, the queen herself) was the hard-working entrepreneur. She built Flavor magazine from the ground up and constantly fought to keep its message as a huge part of the black community. Her arc mainly focused on her balanced between her work, social, and love life.
Regine Hunter the glamorous, gossiping, and short queen of fashion known for her perfectly timed one-liners such as “Ohh sookie sookie now.” Regine is portrayed by the infamous Kim Fields who you might also recognize as Tootie from The Facts of Life (*queue the theme song*). Regine’s aspirations included creating a fabulous life for herself and on the surface it seemed like all she cared about was wedding a millionaire, but with every relationship she learned a little something new about herself along the way.
Synclaire James-Jones played by Kim Coles is the dreamer. She has a bubbly personality and could sometimes come across as air-headed, but she was just a child at heart and wanted to see the good in everything. She saw the good in everyone and was the best friend anyone could ask for even if she did get on everyone’s nerves once in a while.
Last but not least, Overton Wakefield Jones is the handyman of the brownstone where everyone (except Maxine) lives. He spends the beginning of the series pining after Synclaire who shares his sweet and optimistic outlook on life. He’s a surprisingly wise character, often sharing his wisdom with Kyle, his best friend, who does a good job at balancing him out and bringing him back to reality when he needs it.
Great news! Living Single is now available to stream on Hulu so don’t miss out on this great show.
Make sure you follow us for the next show on our list and for more content!
