Rating Walter's Faces
to my preference, because I'm bored and I wanna
The Original
Tumblr media
What's not to love? 10/10. I absolutely love how he looks. He's like a mix between Boo Radley and Frankenstein. Grim to the bone with Crayola Red hair (that seems to be carrot orange or a mauve depending on the lighting. God I love the coloring in this freakin' book). A face to fit a haunted man--You poor, poor redheaded stepchild, you
2. Before Watchmen--Rorschach
Tumblr media
7/10. While I really really dislike this depiction of his character, the art really is killer...TOO killer. He looks way too handsome! Sure, I chose a picture where he's all beat up...but just look at him! He's gorgeous! It's all wrong
3. Tom King's Rorschach Series
Tumblr media
Girl who is this? 2/10
4. Before Watchmen--Nite Owl
Tumblr media
10.8/10
Wait! I hear you cry out. How is this Walter rated higher than the original? This story is yet another one I am not too fond of--the Nite Owl/Twilight Lady moments are great, the retcon of Dan's family life is not needed, and this Walter is pretty bad in terms of depictions. But Listen...Look
Tumblr media
He's all dolled up in his Sunday best. His hair all neat and tidy. This is what I needed.
BONUS--
Cover Art
Tumblr media
9/10. Wish I could see his entire face but I love his expression regardless. Interestingly, his freckles have been depicted here as skin tags or moles. Kinda love it
The Movie--
10000/10
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know I docked off points earlier for being too handsome...but I mean c'mon. He's so. He;s. Yeah

The Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon
Read by u3a Book group 30/1/24
Not everyone enjoyed this book.  One member said she thought it was quite ‘unmemorable’!
It was quite a slow start but as I read on, I was reminded of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee and the similarity between the characters of Boo Radley (To KAM) and Walter Bishop. Boo was a recluse and considered anti-social by the town of Maycomb. Without any evidence he was blamed for anything bad that happened. Likewise, Walter Bishop was seen as a dangerous recluse by the neighbourhood on The Avenue. Both Boo and Walter genuinely loved the company of children but sadly this was construed as evil by their neighbours.
The story begins in the blistering hot summer of 1976 when much of the dialogue between the neighbours of The Avenue takes place outside, in front gardens and along the road.
It is narrated by 10 year old Grace who, like the rest of the neighbourhood, is worried about the disappearance of Margaret Creasy. With her best friend, Tilly, they believe that if they find God, they will find Mrs Creasy. They decide to start their search by visiting each neighbour in turn and so we learn about their private lives, their fears and anxieties and the secrets they keep.
The neighbourhood is haunted by the events of winter 1967 so the story constantly switches between the two decades. There was a fire, a tragedy and a baby disappeared but its identity is not revealed until near the end of the book when other secrets come to light.
Grace and Tillygo to a funeral because, ‘’No-one else might go. God will be there. We might uncover some clues.’’ Speaking to the Vicar afterwards, he tells them, ‘’God will separate the people, one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. Those on the left will go to eternal punishment and only those on the right to eternal life.’’ Tilly, a particularly bright child asks, ‘’How does God know which people are goats & which people are sheep? Grace answers: ‘’I think that’s the trouble. It’s not always that easy to tell the difference.’’
The last visit by Grace & Tilly is to Walter Bishop at No. 11.  They say they are looking for God and Mrs Creasy. Walter says he knew Mrs C very well and was sure she would have a lot to say when she returned. Walter admits he doesn’t mix very well but gets along very well with children. Grace says she wants God to keep everyone on the Avenue safe, like a shepherd. Tilly replies: ‘’Only the sheep, though. God doesn’t like goats. He sends them into the wilderness and doesn’t speak to them again.’’ William is puzzled. Goats? Grace explains. ‘’The world is full of sheep and goats and you have to try and work out which is which. The reader is left to decide which of these categories the neighbours fit into!
There is definitely pathos and humour throughout the story and reading it through the eyes of innocent young children, it could be described as their ‘coming of age’ moment. It is also a very salutary lesson in how prejudices spread and become embedded in small communities without any evidence of wrongdoing.

Read the full article

Y’all my dumbass decided it would be a great idea to write tkam fanfiction set in princess dress era (I don’t have a set one) and it’s going great, yeah, but I can’t let any of my classmates know I stopped this low.
My friend loves the book too but I’m just like “you don’t need to see me write archery, it makes me embarrassed.”
I literally just need to get it off my chest, internet forgive me.

Today’s haul :)
The RW game was so.... weird. I was missing every single shot for the first half of the game, and then with like 15 shells left, suddenly started taking apart the enemy team??? Also the enemy Hellcat kept getting away from me until he showed up at our base and spotted me, but I had a HEAT shell put aside for him.
Well, I’ll take it.

Yeah, agreed! This is really well put! I have honestly seen some Twitter takes that go along the lines "fiction doesn't effect real world", but I think it's more the limitations of Twitter discourse than like people honestly believing it. (Though there's always A Guy for everything.)
The thing is no adult is convinced to change their mind by fiction, if they don't want to. Really it's hard to convince people to change their mind with well-evidenced factual information, if they don't want to change their mind. Try showing an anti-vaxer any evidence that question their worldview and you understand what I mean. And with fiction it's equally easy to find examples of this. Just look at all people who love Fight Club because Tyler Durden is "so cool" and "says how it is" or think that Walter White is the hero of Breaking Bad, or Elon Musk thinking Parasite is good (not realising he is the titular Parasite) or Jeff Bezos loving LotR (not realising he is literally Saruman). I have enjoyed fiction that has some questionable parts, but it's not like a homophobic joke in a media I like could make me go "yeah those fucking gay people, I'm straight now", because I'm just not open to changing my mind on queer being good. Unfortunately too it means representation is not solution to any systemic issues. I have seen many people who in one sentence talk about their favorite media centered on POC and then the next sentence say something very racist.
But as said, obviously fiction has effect on people. It's whole point is to effect you, to stir emotion, communicate feelings and ideas. Governments and corporations wouldn't pour billions to propaganda, if it didn't have any benefit to them. Because in many cases people are open to changing their minds on things. People have biases and those biases can be exploited to change their minds. Some people are also not extremely committed to their views and are able to either commit or change their views when presented with the right stories or information (for good or ill). As Radley said above, the underlying systemic issues are the real cause, the fiction they produce is a symptom. Though like often symptoms do, it makes it worse.
And the thing is, exposure therapy works. It's tried and true technique of misinformation. The misinformation machine takes a fake story, reports on it like it's true, reports on the reports until you have hundreds of articles and social media posts. So, when someone is in a bubble of that misinformation, even outlandish stories start ringing true, because how would all these people be wrong at the same time? There are also studies that show people become more susceptible to information they hear over and over again, because repetition kinda lowers our brain's defenses. But this can be used for factual information too and for example convincing others that the people different from them are also actually people. There's also studies of this on US, where white people in previously white areas at first became more racist, when it became more diverse, but fairly quickly after exposure to different people they became less racist than before. So while representation can't fix systemic issues, it can make people more susceptible to question their biases and through that get more support to change systems. Still, the people who don't want to change their mind will surround themselves with the media that reinforces their worldview and avoid repeat exposure to different views, so when they inevitably encounter media that tries to question their views, they ignore it or angrily reject it.
This is to say, art is important and art criticism is important. It's important to be critical of the art you experience, even if you love it, or perhaps especially when you love it. Usually, you can't make assumptions of people form the fiction they like or don't like, it doesn't really tell you much about their character. Why someone likes something tells much more about them, which is why it's also important to occasionally take a step back and think critically why you enjoyed something. Art is as much of a mirror as it is communication. It can reveal a lot about the artist, but it can reveal just as much about the viewer. Just listen to all the queer people, who were deeply effected by Harry Potter, who even were able to accept and embrace their queerness because of it. It changed them, but not because anything it communicated (as we know now there was no such intentions), but because it was a mirror to them. It didn't communicate beauty from it's shitty author, it reflected their own beauty back to them.
Not to throw myself back in this nest of scorpions or whatever, but I have another fandom question:
For people who believe fiction doesn’t impact reality, do you think representation is important? And if yes, what do you think is the importance of representation?

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. 8.4/10
About Atticus defending a colored man, who is accused of raping a white woman. It also involves his two children and their friend trying to unravel the mysteries of the Radley House.
Aw, Walter Cunningham.
Atticus will always be so fineee to me. I am absolutely in love with him. I would marry the fuck out of him. A man like that at a time like this? Amazing. I wonder what he was like to his wife and I wonder what his wife was like.
It’s amazing how the differing characters really make this book. In the beginning, I didn’t really enjoy the characters, but now they are what I love. I wasn’t a fan of Scout’s attitude, but I loved when she would question the education system.
I enjoyed everything Miss Maudie said as she talked about the trial to the kids.
I rather enjoy Dill’s and Scout’s engagement.
Ugh this book is so good. How do I even describe? The wording is perfect.
Memorable Quotes: “but it was beyond my ability to explain things as well as Atticus.” “I was weary from the day’s crimes.” “People in their right minds never take pride in their talents” “”It’s no reason to run off. They don’t get around to doin’ what they say they’re gonna do half the time
” “That wasn’t it, he–they wasn’t interested in me.” “No matter what anyone says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat.” “Cry about the simple hell people give other people–without even thinking.” “In the name of God, do your duty.” “Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.”
