The man on the radio is back! Back with his Toblerone, happy talk and tasty tit bits about the Emerald Isle. Track after track from Frank Sinatra as he died this day lots and lots of years ago. Not a huge fan of Frank, but I'll take him over a pile of algorithmic inanity any day. Get the quiz right and you'll win a weekend in the Metropole Hotel. An operatic question to do with Violetta .. I have no clue. The traffic lady and I don't seem destined to cross paths, no doubt things are as zen like as ever out there on those crazy highways and byways.
Dry so far but I've still put my name on 'the umbrella' list. The shiny metropolis calls, so fingers crossed that it remains a 'you don't need a raincoat' kind of a day.
No doubt you'll also be fascinated and on the edge of your seat to learn I'm also looking for waterproof boots. 'Ah stop!' as they say here. I know, I know, my weather and clothing related trials and tribulations are uppermost in most people's minds. At this rate I'll be resorting to throwing on a couple of large black bin bags and swearing to anyone that'll listen that it's all the people on the catwalks are wearing.
There was rain yesterday. I mean 'it was a soft day, thank God'. 'Ah sure ... how would you be well .. and didn't the ground need a drop.' Not sure the spider in the bucket felt the same as her web shook. Didn't help that the passing hooman not only kicked her bucket but then proceeded to act as paparazzi. No doubt she was 'raging' and I may lose a limb next time I pass.
Ach well ... another Tuesday, another cup of coffee and a whole pile of music from the man on the radio ... wonder if he'd care to share a bit of his chocolate ...

I am not handling French elections well in a way that I had absolutely not anticipated. It is perhaps due to some ancestry, so as today marks 62 years since the independence of Algeria, my father’s country, let me tell you a story that is only 63 years old. It took place in October 1961 in Paris.
The context is the ongoing war of independence in Algeria and corresponding uprisings in the metropole, led by the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN), facing severe and brutal repression by police. 8 protesters died from their injuries in February 1961.
Despite the tense climate, a recently imposed curfew - applying only to Algerians - the FLN manages to organise, with secretive planning, a counter-protest on 17 Oct. They enjoin all Algerians, including women and children, to join. Only one rule: absolutely no weapons; this is a peaceful march.
Throughout 1961, France suffered many attacks by the FLN, that was specifically targeting law enforcement. In the year 1961 alone, before 17 October, 22 policemen were killed by the FLN. The response, under Préfet Maurice Papon, includes the practice of internment and of torture.
Hundreds of Algerians - but also Moroccans and Tunisians, anyone that could potentially be Algerian - were rounded up and kept in cells, beaten up and shocked, without any form of due process. President DeGaulle, realising the situation, develops a policy of extreme discrimination and violence. To this day, the number of victims of police violence especially in Paris but also in Lyon and Marseille seems hard to estimate. The FLN was considered a threat to the remnants of the French Empire, and anyone was considered a potential informant or insurrectionist.
The curfew Maurice Papon imposes on 5 October demands that any Algerian worker “be under imminent notice not to circulate between 8:30pm and 5:30am”; bars and restaurants frequented by MENA populations are under order to close at 7pm; It is also prohibited - once again, a prohibition applying to Algerians alone - to walk in the street in groups; any car or vehicle owned by an Algerian is towed and can only be released under special order from the Préfet. We now have a word for it in law; a corresponding crime.
Advocacy groups apply for special exemption permits for workers, and attempt to act as a buffer between French Muslims and the local council and state. A little under 10% will be obtained laissez-passer paperwork, and at the time of the protest, work continued to allow Algerians to exist. Trade unions and the communist party oppose this curfew, reiterating that the then 3 year old Constitution of the Fifth Republic granted Algerians full civil rights. Meanwhile, the FLN organises, including with cells in Belgium, and prepares for the 17th of October.
Their plans were only known to police informants on the very day, simply due to circumstance - a railway workers’ strikes blocked some Algerians outside Saint-Lazare, who attempted to protest early, tipping off the police. Orders are issued to gather all Algerian men & keep them in a nearby stadium. The women would be kept in custody in a police precinct. 1,658 officers are deployed in central Paris on the right bank. Those numbers are low for what they were about to face, but those officers are briefed to face “violent, armed insurgents”, and were prepared accordingly.
Fake news were then reported on police radio, a fact that is often omitted in the story. Due to the recent attacks targeting law enforcement, rumours spread of “dozens of police officers” being “stabbed by Algerians” in La Défense, contributing to police repression.
Between 20,000 and 40,000 Algerians are now gathering from Grands Boulevards, Étoile, and Saint Michel, numbers that can still only be estimated. More are coming from the ghettos outside Paris, such as Nanterre. They’re blocked on the Pont de Neuilly.
As the police kettles over 500 men from this particular side of the protest, many arrive from the east in support. In an hour, over 4,000 Algerians, many women and children, were attempting to stop the internment of protesters. Police started using batons, and the riot started.
Police testimony compared the crowd to “a swarm of bees”. Firearms are discharged and bodies are trampled. At this point of the evening, the AFP already reports 2 dead in the protests, with the Préfet reporting that police was acting in self-defense.
Towards Étoile, police then stations itself outside subway station, and arrests any Algerian exiting it. Over 2,500 men are then sent to internment camps that night in the area alone; 2,000 more are sent to mass identification centers near Opéra.
Around 9pm, by République, protesters are met extremely violently by police shooting live bullets at a crowd chanting “Algeria to Algerians”. Some of the bloodiest moments of the night took place there, with bodies and bloody clothes littering the street until the next day.
By that point, the first reports of Algerians, dead or alive, thrown over the Pont de Neuilly into the river Seine are starting to reach the media. By Saint Michel, over a thousand Algerians are rounded up and beaten before being sent to internment. Many threw themselves into the river instead.
It is said that between 6,000 and 7,000 Algerians were interned in the Palais des Sports. Hospitals receiving the injured continued to receive Algerians victims of police violence up until the 21st of October, testifying of the aftermath of the protest. Injuries were also consistent with torture.
A few weeks later, a member of the police union, Gerard Monate, commented that “what happened in some cases was truly indefensible… a degree of violence we are not sure we fully know.” Two stadiums then had to be used for internees. A Ray Charles concert led to its vacation through deportation.
The next day, Algerian shop owners were called for a strike. The strikers were arrested, but their numbers were only in the thousands, from 11,700 the night before. The FLN also fought back in Nanterre, opening fire on a police car. There were no reported deaths.
The debate continues to estimate the number of dead from both 17 and 18 October, ranging from 40 to 280. Amongst those, even more disputed is the number of deaths directly attributable to police violence. A 1998 parliamentary report only somehow mentions 7.
Anyway, this is just one episode. The daughter of a man who bragged about torturing those Algerians will lead the country come Sunday night.

Hi i think i'm falling in love with HONGJOONG please help me. please. what are some of your favorite videos of him / all of ateez even? 🤲🏻 i am going crazy
kjuhzgtzhujik i am HAPPILY of help anon u have no idea how much this thrills me. tho there are many people who have been fans of ateez much longer, the hongjoong bias is still rare around here so i am happy about everyone joining ranks !!! hello hi !!! have fun !!!
so mandatory viewing of my ateez (hongjoong centric) experience:
deja vu mv (he serves so much raw cunt here it's insane. it changed me as a person like i was a mere casual listener but this one. sealed the deal over a year ago. i have yet to come up for air)
don't stop mv (second most insane moment in the hongjoong-fication of me. he's actually an actor it's crazy he didn't get a baeksang for best music video acting while trying to maintain 20 safety regulations. that category doesn't exist but it Should)
answer mv (this song was the only one to make me cry at my concert and i wasn't even a big fan yet .... song of ALL time tho !!! she is too good)
hongjoong's lemon tree cover (if you are in your mid-20s or older and european you will know this song. if you aren't, open your heart! he also wrote his own verse for it bc he's a bad bitch a virtuous icon)
ateez's wonderland on kingdom (i only watched one other video from kingdom but this is the most famous one anyway. took the house down as the kids would say. no survivors, i fear.)
ateez's it's live session: promise (first video i have ever seen of them perform and one of my fave ateez songs still. every session they did for this is great tho)
say my name comeback stage (kq's block b money was running out. ateez debuted with the most asinine space oddity meets metropol meets matrix group concept meant to span most of their career and releases. no one was tuning in. it was dire. they had one shot. and they delivered like the dorm was flooded and lights were all shut off the day prior. kq has to kiss their feet for this performance alone actually. ALSO. mullet hongjoong <3)
horizon comeback stage (sister release to answer. LIVES were once more on the line. this is to me their best song ever. the choreo is a feat of art and i do not say this lightly. spot some sweet and respective yeosang and yunho actions for the key parts of this song.)
hongjoong's log 1day (all of his vlogs or any ateez vlogs are easy background watching. i am not too deep into variety but whenever groups i like drop short vlogs, they're very fun ways to share non-music stuff in a way they feel comfortable with. also a man who is in such dire need of a dye job <3 he's just like me <3)
ateez wanted special 2022 (for their debut anniversary trip last year. the entire series is hilarious and shows a lot of their variety / on camera personas. hongjoong, seonghwa, and jongho were my faves here)
ateez's logbook #72 (their own behind the scenes series! i usually just watch these randomly when i have to kill time. the one during eternal sunshine promo has lots of hongjoong with mingi and jongho <3)
wanteez home appliance quiz (styled like a 90's/00 quiz show, they are fighting to win home appliances for their parents. the 98z' team chant is the meme sound of a t-rex. it's great)
wanteez friendship test (what it says on the tin!)
ateez @ sunmi's showterview (everyone was roasting mingi left centre and right but it is soooo fun overall. sunmi's showterview is hilarious)
that's it for now! i am terrible at watching mv's and big variety content, i am much more of a listener than a watcher jhgzhujik but with hongjoong i find any of his vlogs / covers / live stages are great content. ateez has also been on weekly idol and naver now usually livestreams hongjoong and yunho's season of idol radio, so these are fun to check out as well <3
#this ask made my whole damn month already hehe#happy watching anon and PLS come back to tell me of your journey !!#ask#anonymous

“That’s something you miss being a new artist, no one knew me, there was no pressure. TMTC just exploded. There was no consideration of, how will this sound on radio, we never even thought about it.”
“I’ve gained a better relationship with social media. You can look at 100 good comments but only remember the one that says “I don’t like this,” that’s the human brain for you. If you’re coming away miserable, do the work on yourself or don’t engage.”

[discusses Hozier’s favorite albums to listen to, not EYY]

Souce: the Universal Weekly, 8 May 1926
London Showing Gala Event of Film Season The London showing was in the London Hippodrome, April 9th, and was by far the gala event of the current film season in London. The picture is in twenty-two reels and was shown at a double session, each session including eleven reels. This was a decided novelty for the British filmmen and reviewers, yet was accepted with favor and even enthusiasm. It is considered likely that the American presentation of the big French film will conform to this method.
The trade showing tour of the picture which followed the London showing was as follows: West End Cinema, Birmingham, April 11th; Theatre Royal, Manchester, April 12th; Grainger Picture House, Newcastle, April 13th; Theatre Royal, Glasgow, April 14th; Briggate Picture House, Leeds, April 15th; Trocadero, Liverpool, April 16th, and Park Cinema, Cardiff, April 17th. The London Hippodrome showing was marked by unusual ceremonies and celebrations. An elaborate prologue, hailed as one of the finest ever seen in England, preceded the picture. In it many of the principal actors and actresses of the film appeared in person. Included in the prologue were the following French film favorites, who made a special trip from Paris for the opening: Sandra Milowanoff, who plays Fantine; Andree Rolane, who plays Cosette; Jean Toulout, who plays Javert; Paul Jorge, who plays Mgr. Myriel; G. Saillard, who plays Thenardier; N. Saillard, who plays Eponine and Renee Carl who has the role of La Thenardier. In the prologue, these players broke through the pages of a big book and marched across the stage before the sleeping figure of Victor Hugo. Prominent International Figures Attend
A number of the officials and executives of the Societe des Cineromans also were present from Paris, including Jean Sapene, proprietor of Le Matin and director general of the Societe; Louis Nalpas, art director of the Societe; Henri Fescourt, who produced "Les Miserables," and others of similar importance. Amie de Fleureau [sic], French Ambassador to England, was present at the showing, with other prominent Frenchmen now in England, including Marcel Knecht. The French Ambassador, the officials of the Cineromans, members of the cast and many prominent Britons were guests at a banquet held the same evening in the Hotel Metropole, London. Ambassador de Fleureau, Sapene, Nalpas and Knecht sent the following cable to Carl Laemmle during the dinner: "After the splendid and unequalled presentation of 'Les Miserables' at the Hippodrome today to enthusiastic elite of England in the presence of the Ambassadors from Japan, Belgium, Brazil; the Ministers from Greece, Portugal, Norway, Finland and Lithuania; after this most cordial banquet uniting two hundred British-American-French leading journalists, we wish to congratulate warmly and to thank Universal and yourself for most efficient demonstration of Franco-American friendship for the betterment of peace." The cable also contained high praise for James V. Bryson, general manager of the European Motion Picture Co., Ltd., Universal's distributors in the British Isles. Bryson and his aids have had most to do with the acquisition of "Les Miserables" by Universal and for the elaborate presentation it has just received overseas. Cables of gratitude and praise also were sent to Laemmle from the Mayor of Nancy, France, the home of Hugo's father, and from the Mayor of Besancon, where Hugo was born. Score and Story of Picture Broadcast In connection with the Hippodrome presentation, the British National Opera Orchestra of fifty pieces was used to supply the musical background of the picture.
The entire score, together with the story of the picture, was broadcast by radio. It has been estimated that four million radio fans listened-in on this music program. Following the London presentation the orchestra was used for the various provincial trade showings. [. . .] Other Cities Equally Enthusiastic [. . .] Definite information as to whether "Les Miserables" would be released in America the same way as in England — in two parts of eleven reels each, totaling a four-hour show — could not be obtained this week at the Universal Home Office where it was said that this method was under serious consideration, but that no decision had yet been made. It was pointed out that several other methods of presenting the entire twenty-two reels offer themselves. One of these would be to run the first eleven reels in the afternoon and the second part in the evening. Another way would be to run one part in one theatre and the other in another theatre day and date. Still a third way would be to run the first part the first half of the week and the second part the last half. One thing is practically certain. Carl Laemmle, rather than sacrifice any of the dramatic thrills and entertainment value to be found in the full-length version, means to present it as it stands. It is of interest that the second half is almost a complete story in itself and with a short foreword for the purpose of introducing the characters and outline the elements of the preceding action, might conceivably stand on its own feet. It is understood that Laemmle is seeking the advice of many exhibitors, newspaper reviewers and others on the perplexing subject of how to release "Les Miserables." Meanwhile, Universal is going ahead with plans to launch the big Universal-Film de France with an advertising, publicity and exploitation campaign that will dwarf that done for such previous Universal super-pictures as "The Hunch- back" and "The Phantom."

The Most Beautiful Words
I'm currently have a weird feeling and complicated relationship with a crush. Her name is Ameera. We met each other at a test for a vacant job at Komunitas Bambu. Oh my God I will never forget these moments, that was December 15, 2022. Honestly, I have a crush on her since the first time I saw her.
But, I think she more than myself at some points. if I could describe her, she's smarter and taller than me, and very beautiful. I can't find a chance to get acquainted with her, because of my inferiority-complex. So I started with a follow on her Instagram and get acquainted with her since then.
We had arranged several dates, first at a coffeeshop (double-date with Toki and Kinkin!), second at a Mie Aceh on Jln. Margonda with his friend, Putri. Third, we are going to Bogor by train to attend a break fasting with my friends there. Fourth, we are going to Metropole XXI to watch The Covenant. Fifth, I'm going to Univ. Indonesia Train Station to gambling visit her, and I'm so lucky, then we had a dinner at a small restaurant nearby her boardinghouse.
Actually at the fifth date I got a feeling that she's not so interested with me again. Not so enthusiastically. I don't know why, maybe it's because of my bad attitude control of mouth and cannot be romantic. But, I try to not touched her sexually, I don't wanna disgrace her, maybe this is one of the reasons why she's not having a feeling of interest on me again.
Oh, ya. Actually she was originated from Purwokerto, and graduated from the History Department of Universitas Indonesia on 2022 and she is the one that got accepted as an editor at Komunitas Bambu (instead of me!).
I'm excited with her outstanding emotional intelligence, she's always makes me laugh every time we have a chat. She is smoking a lot and we are always smoking together. Sometimes she takes me to walking around to make some sweat, even though that was night time. I had ruined those memories because I can't get enough brain. I don't know why I'm always making the same mistakes. Over time, this relationship will never be the same again.
I'm sorry, Ameera. But I think we cannot continuing this relationship. Everyday I always think about you, I cannot hide from your shadows. The only way to release you from my mind is to get another girl as a new crush. I'm sorry.
May 21-22, 2023
*When I wrote this memory, I have requested a song to be played especially for Ameera at Imelda FM radio, Aku ingin Pulang -Ebiet G. Ade.

OZ's 2023
______
Ch-ch-ch-changes
•••
Going to keep this year's recap brief. Not sure if anyone reads these, but I reference them sometimes when necessary.
The main thing of note this year was my workload.
I returned to concert performance following the pandemic lull of 2020-2022. I played about a dozen shows with Pepperland in the second half of the year, beginning with a private event in rural Alberta and ending by closing an awards gala for hundreds of folks at the Edmonton Expo Centre (video below) and a sold out NYE show at the Blue Chair. More performances with Pepperland and others are planned for 2024.
youtube
I also broke my first guitar string(s) since 2011!
My radio work unexpectedly shifted into high gear this year. Following various developments in 2022, I planned to drastically scale back my fill-in work at CKUA - particularly during the daytime programs. However, through some cosmic irony, by the end of 2023 I ended up doing more radio work than ever before. My previous record for fill-in shows in a single year was 95. I ended 2023 having acted as a guest-host on 141 occasions, in addition to my own weekly show. This was not planned, and nearly all of those 141 shows have been classical music programs. I have been operating since February as the guest-host of Classic Examples during the long term absence of the regular host Mark Antonelli.
My weekly Friday night Albertan music program In Our Neighbourhood continues on CKUA. Also continuing, now in its fourth year, my collaboration with NME as the Senior Producer on their podcast series The No Normal.
Working this many weeknights has had the unfortunate consequence of my family rarely being in the same place together. What little time we've shared has been spent introducing my kid to Star Trek.

OTHER MUSIC THOUGHTS FROM THE ZIBLIOTHEK
In 2020, I started an alphabetical exploration of the Zibliothek’s vinyl collection. I’ve also been documenting the LP library and other aspects of the collection on Instagram. At my current rate, it will take me 13-15 years to listen to the full LP library. I made inconsistent progress in 2023, listening in waves with long gaps between opportunities. Here’s some of what I listened to this year:
Lou Christie: I once read he was Egyptian. This has proven difficult misinformation to shake. Some goofy goodies in his catalogue.
Eric Clapton: Outside of his 1965-1968 period, I am decidedly not a fan of Clapton as a person or musician. With the exception of his Unplugged album, which has strong moments, nearly everything since Derek & the Dominoes has been criminally dull. I can honestly say I never need to hear his music again.
Petula Clark: Great voice. Sometimes great songs too.
Roy Clark: I like his music best when I can't see him playing it.
The Clash: Tremendous.
Joe Cocker: Great bands behind him. Often great performances too. Not always strong material.
Patsy Cline / Leonard Cohen / Nat King Cole / Perry Como / Sam Cooke: All tremendous.
Ry Cooder: I remain a bit mystified by Ry Cooder. Admired by countless people I enjoy, but his music does nothing for me.
Elvis Costello: A very strong catalogue, and consistently enjoyable.
Cream: Clapton at his best, fighting for space in a tempest of madmen.
Creedence Clearwater Revival: I've never been a big fan. With a few exceptions, the overplayed radio hits remain tiresome. I have a vague memory of their live "Royal Albert Hall" album being strong, and I like their debut album and Cosmo's Factory, but everything in between was pretty plodding and dull overall.
Jim Croce: What a catalogue he might have produced had he lived. Some gigantic tunes.
The Cowsills: The hits still hit.
Bing Crosby: The birth of croon, but not the greatest in his field.
Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and Young): Great when they're good, forgettable when they're not.
Bobby Darin: I love his work, his young voice was one of the all-time greats for that kind of music. As his voice changed, he still used it well, but it was never as magical after the early 1960s.
Dave Cark / The Dave Clark Five: Business genius, funny drummer, some of the best British Invasion songs going. Mike Smith was a tremendously underrated rock & roll singer in his youth.
Deep Purple: Finally listened to the bulk of their peripheral catalogue. Several of their albums are essential for any library. Their early Mk I period is underrated heavy pop, before they found their signature sound. The iconic Mk II period is musically tremendous and lyrically abysmal, and Made In Japan still might be the greatest live album of all time. The Mk III period (and the Tommy Bolin years) weren't as bad as I anticipated, but didn't keep my attention either. The quality of the music seems unconnected to the quality of the album artwork.
Deep Purple solo projects: These range from forgettable to awful in almost every case. Some of Jon Lord's early works are nice to hear, but I love Jon Lord. Still don't understand the appeal of Tommy Bolin.
John Denver: I enjoyed his Rocky Mountain High album, but curiously his two greatest hits albums are painfully weak.
Delaney & Bonnie & Friends: Alright, I guess. Nothing special. Early shades of Clapton the boring.
Derek & the Dominoes: Sometimes very good.
•••
This song came out in 2022 rather than 2023. Despite being familiar and a fan of Bill McClintock, I only discovered it a month ago. I've listened to it dozens of times and it might be the greatest mash-up ever made. Maybe even the best thing period.

No pithy ending for 2023. Be safe. Be well. Good luck going forward in 2024.
