What are your headcannons for the stars and zed stacks??
oh gosh! i dont have mega long 'heres an organised list of thoughts' posts about them like you do, and tbh i dont actually think about the zed stacks that much bc the Stars are my favs but i can try remember what i came up with
i think i mostly had HCs around OJ. This is 'if they're Human Dudes' headcanons, for clarity's sake
OJ thoughts: Very welsh, loves rugby way too much, i imagine he could have a radio on deck that he listens to commentary of games, can drink anyone under the table, uses a walking stick from time to time when his hip plays up and loves to trip people up with it when he's feeling petty. got in bar fights and won a lot when he was young.
Sunshine has bad circulation and wears gloves/fingerless gloves a lot bc his fingers get cold. also he's bad at remembering to drink water so his hands are Also super dry. really love the HC that him and Billy are good friends bc they're both from Up River.
...yknow? i have no founding for this but i think Ten Cents would like cricket. the sport. he also follows that on the radio during slow days in the harbour. I also think Top Hat likes cricket and it's one of the only things the two of them can talk vaguely civilly about.
speaking of Top Hat, i think he's good at embroidery. He embroiders his name/initials onto his handkerchiefs all the time and probably does those embroidery hoops in his downtime but doesn't show anyone (thinks they won't Get It)
and unrelated. i think Hercules has a wonderful singing voice. he's probably a baritone. maybe only sings when he's out on the waves by himself when Lily can hear him, though. godbless.
i hope that's what you meant ^-^ i could slowly come up with more if i really sat down and thought about it, i'm sure, but yeah <3
gosh i haven't thought about Tugs properly in a while
#this is tugs#star tugs#tugs ten cents#tugs OJ#tugs top hat#tugs hercules#tugs sunshine#tugs headcanons#tugs humanized#dj rambles

Well, this is the best bit of gossip to ever appear on the Elis James and John Robins radio show:
This, of course, goes along with the story that Nish Kumar told on The Bugle of the same football game:
A game that took place when John Oliver was back in Britain briefly at the end of 2017, during which time he appeared on The Russell Howard Hour and apparently played football, but did not stop to do any Bugle episodes, which is fine, I mean it's absolutely fine, we can't all be Hollywood.
Hollywood. Despite the fact that I once made an image listing some coincidental superficial similarities,
I find it quite difficult to picture John Robins and John Oliver existing in the same place. They're wildly different. But if you asked me what I thought would happen if they ever were in the same place, I'd probably guess it would involve a lot of John Robins repeatedly calling him Hollywood.
I can't post that audio clip of Nish Kumar discussing that game on The Bugle without also posting the compilation I made of the evolution of Nish Kumar becoming the British John Oliver, because it's quite adorable:
Anyway, going back to that original clip from the radio show, I also enjoyed Producer Vin hearing comedian football mentioned and immediately asking about Andy Zaltzman. There wasn't any context from before or explanation from after that clip to explain why he'd asked, it sounds like Vin just likes Andy was impressed that they play football with him sometimes. Which is pretty cool. I think Vin's mentioned before that he's a cricket fan, and I am aware that Andy Zaltzman is weirdly, legitimately big among cricket fans, since he does so much cricket commentary and collation of stats. I'm hoping I'm right in remembering that I've heard Vin mention being into cricket, as otherwise that's just an assumption I'm making based on his race. But I think he's mentioned it.
I quite like Producer Vin at this point. Earlier in the radio show, I was a bit disappointed by how their back-and-forth with the producers seemed a lot less fun than what I'm used to, on The Bugle where Producer Chris (and Tom before him) is a beloved figure on the show. At some point I worked out that it's a bit of a different relationship, an independent podcast vs a live radio show. The radio producers are actually accountable to the station to make sure the comedians are saying things that will be good for listenership, so there were more interruptions that were genuine rebukes for going too far off on rants that would be inaccessible to a casual listener, whereas on a show that's a podcast first, you know that everyone has tuned in because they like Andy Zaltzman's inaccessible rants. I've never heard Chris Skinner try to curtail any of Andy's pun runs, for any reason besides to preserve his own psychological stability.
Having said that, after the first 100 episodes or so they settle into a rhythm, interactions with producers got a lot more natural and more fun. I'm at episode 200 now and Producer Vin has only recently started speaking up at times during the chat to hold them to account, not for boring radio standards but for contradicting stuff they've said before, which can be pretty funny at times. I like him. I think he's more naturally funny than the previous producer. Knowing he apparently approves of Andy Zaltzman, for whatever reason, makes me like him more.
Oh, and I also recently heard an episode in which Harry Potter came up, and John Robins said he's a Gryffindor, and I have not identified anyone's Hogwarts House for about fifteen years, but the years I spent doing so instantly came back to me and I looked at my phone and said "absolutely the fuck not, 100% Ravenclaw, few cases are this clear cut." And then a few weeks later they were on with Producer Vin and John referenced the recent episode in which he'd called himself a Gryffindor, and Vin immediately said that was one of the episodes when he was absent, which he knows because if he'd been there he would never have let him get away with that claim, he'd have interrupted to say no, 100% Ravenclaw. And I looked at my phone and said thank you. I like this guy.
This post has covered a fair bit of ground. The original point was supposed to be that I would pay good money to see Old John Oliver and New John Oliver tackle each other over a football. Sorry that I got onto Harry Potter. Fuck JK Rowling but I like Producer Vin.

Bitter Brit again:
This post gives some indication of what it’s like to experience cricket. And yes it is better listened to on the radio than watched on tv. In person with a TMS earpiece is best.
https://www.tumblr.com/elodieunderglass/178921341318/my-boyfriend-is-trying-to-explain-cricket-to-me
An area of the outfield is called cows corner. The Test Match Special commentators think umpires should be given electric shocks for walking too slowly. Foakes could be out, bowled by Stokes caught by Woakes. In 2022 you could field an England team with half having a name stating with J - Joe, Jos, Jofra, Jonny, Jimmy, Jamie. Salt and Pepper played against each other. Games will stop for bad light. Test match evening sessions can be extended but morning sessions never start earlier than 10am. There are breaks for lunch and tea. Listeners send in cakes for the commentary team. There are three main formats T20 (3 hours, no tv advert breaks), ODI (all day, but only one day), Test (all day, five days, usually over in four). Bowlers can score hat tricks, batters can be out for a golden duck. Both batting and bowling are offence and defence. It’s a bizarre game.
Also Bradman played during an era of 8 ball overs. Today’s game has 6 ball overs. Like Gretzky, not comparable to the modern era.
I understand most of those words separately but not when you string them together like that. I'm obsessed with this. All sports should be either "fastest to run this distance wins" or this needlessly complicated and full of strange traditions. Love it
(also saw your third anon and :handshake: draw it is)

Why do sports' commentators not understand the concept of television
“Broadcasting is easy; you just talk until you think of something to say.” – Lou Holtz
Part of the BBC’s remit is to provide unbiased coverage of events – something that is not always easy to do. But in its coverage of many sporting events, the BBC, along with most broadcasters, has simply given up on any attempt at impartiality – or even common sense.
The brilliant Australian cricketer and commentator, Richie Benaud, who died in 2015, drafted eight “rules of commentary”: 1. never ask for a statement; 2. remember the value of a pause; 3. there are no teams in the world called “we” or “they”; 4. avoid clichés and banalities, such as “He’s hit that to the boundary”, “He won’t want to get out now”, “Of course”, “As you can see on the screen”; 5. the Titanic was a tragedy, the Ethiopian drought a disaster, and neither bears any relation to a dropped catch; 6. put your brain into gear before opening your mouth; 7. concentrate fiercely at all times; 8. above all, don’t take yourself too seriously, and have fun.
The “rules” were meant to apply principally to cricket but could easily be adapted for other sports.
If only other commentators and supposed “expert analysts” would take note. Professional commentators have largely been sidelined by the TV channels and even some of the radio stations; instead we have former players, many with voices likely to induce boredom or sleep, doing the work and, for the most part, doing it badly, astonishingly so.
Richie was rare: a former player who made a first-class commentator. Those of the modern era break every one of his rules with monotonous regularity, pouring forth drivel, clichés and banalities, often in a non-stop condescending tone – for instance, “the umpire/referee got that one right” or “he/she is a good player”.
Most former cricketers, footballers and other sports “personalities” are pretty hopeless at commentary, analysis or punditry – though it can be entertaining to listen to them making prats of themselves as they drone on endlessly (or seemingly so) with their cliché-ridden drivel. Unfortunately, however, the TV (and radio channels) are sold on them.
How often do we hear about players in many sports who have given a reasonably good performance being described as “absolutely magnificent”? Other favourites, among many: “He had all the time in the world”, “That’s unbelievable” (“unbelievable” being probably the most overused word of all), “How incredible is that?”
Meanwhile, much of the analysis consists of telling us what has just happened while the pictures are being shown again. “That was a great move,” says the commentator and the “expert analyst” will frequently respond with, “Yeah definitely (or absolutely), that was a great move.” Insightful, to say the least.
Many of the television commentators tell us no more than we can see, as though unaware that we are watching the same event. Perhaps they don’t understand the concept of television. Some use the future tense – e.g. he will kick for touch, this ball will go to the boundary – to describe what has already happened.
Rugby sevens, rugby league and pool get the “talk far too much” awards for incessant blather but there have been several other contenders. And now snooker is getting in on the act, commentators believing that if a competitor plays a good shot, we need to be told that he (or she) has played a good shot.
Is it that the broadcasters insist on commentators and analysts (so-called) continuing to speak when they have nothing interesting or informative to say or is it simply that the speakers love the sound of their own voices? Many do no more than obey the instruction of the compère of the TV quiz show, Catchphrase: “Say what you see!”
In 2018 a number of letters to newspapers asked if we could possibly mute the commentary while enjoying the crowd noise, which is a great idea. Especially when the speaker says in excited tones, “And just listen to the crowd.” We would love to, you moron, if only you would shut up. How great it would have been, following Liverpool’s victory in the Champions League final in 2019, to hear clearly the wonderful singing of the fans; instead, we had numpties in the broadcasting box shouting banalities over the top of the singing, making what they presumably thought were important comments but adding nothing and spoiling the occasion.
Some, intriguingly, have developed a language of their own. David “Bumble” Lloyd, a cricketer turned umpire turned commentator, was particularly adept at this. He once said of a New Zealand player, “If this bloke’s a Test match bowler, then my backside is a fire engine.” Couldn’t say fairer than that. And it’s great the way cricket commentators on TV give the score at the end of every over – in fact they give the score more often than on most radio commentaries – even though it is writ large (in most cases) on the bottom left of the screen. Presumably someone has told them they will sound like proper or professional commentators if they do that.
A former England cricket captain turned journalist and commentator, Michael Atherton, one of the more articulate and less verbose occupiers of the commbox (as many like to call it), and one less prone to hyperbole, said after one particular ball, “You don’t need me to tell you what happened there.” Whether he appreciated the irony or import of his words might never be known, but what he said applies to at least 95% of balls bowled, and would apply to even more if the camera work was better.
Here are a few oft-repeated words and phrases that commentators regularly overuse – or really shouldn’t use at all: “getting back in the game”; “playing catch-up”; “we have a game on our hands”; “under pressure” – which can range from “severe” to “immense” and even “extreme”; “crucial”; “heartbreaking”; “the big man” (for any large male player); “under the pump” (don’t ask!); “make no mistake”; “no doubt – or question – about it”; “I have to say”; “to be honest”; “I tell you what…”; “he can’t believe it”; “he/she should have done better”; “this team won’t lie down”; “he/she will be disappointed with that”; “long levers” (arms); “sensational”; “just look at what it means to him/her”; “that’s a great golf shot” by a golfer or “that’s a great cricket shot” by a cricketer, in case we onlookers might be confused as to what sport we were watching; “this is a knowledgeable crowd” (wonderfully condescending); “that’s plumb” – when it clearly isn’t; “he/she did that well in the end” (as if the player might have taken a catch or done something else a bit sooner); “and he knows it” (after someone has made a hash of something and we might think he or she was unaware of it) – and this list could, like most commentators these days, go on and on.
It makes attending an event even more enjoyable as we can enjoy the atmosphere without having to listen to these banalities. Organisers must feel that as we are there we don’t need to be told what is going on. Such a relief. Oh for the joy of being able to listen to a neutral, professional commentator – on radio or TV – giving us calm, informed comment on the game in progress. Please!
One theory as to why TV commentators describe every little detail, shouting at various points and telling us to “watch this” or “as you can see here”, is that their words are aimed principally at young people, aged most likely between 12 and 15 years old (give or take a year or two), who have the TV on but are engaged in games or other activities on their phones or tablets. The shouts and screams are intended to attract the youngsters’ attention at various points. Obviously a cunning plan.
It would be quite wrong to include commentaries on such events as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Australia’s Big Bash, Sevens and Super Rugby, women’s football (with men’s these days not far behind), athletics and many more, among those aimed at that particular age group. They are clearly aimed at a younger audience. Fortunately, the crowds are so large and vociferous at IPL matches in particular that they drown out much of the nonsense intended to pass as commentary.
Many sports events now also feature the pointless interview, a genre mastered by the BBC in its coverage of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and now adopted as a time-wasting filler by many TV channels.
Oh for some relief from the incessant stream of cliché-ridden drivel, inanities and statements of the bleedin’ obvious from so-called commentators and co-commentators, as well as people referred to as pundits and analysts who rarely add anything of interest – though it can be fun sometimes to see who says “but” (often rhyming with put) or “unbelievable” the most often in a given period. A game within a game. It might catch on.
In August 2023 The Times published a letter in response to a comment by Gabby Logan, the personable former gymnast turned TV presenter, who had asked why sports presenters did not appear in national TV awards.
The correspondent wrote: “I would suggest it is because they add so little and often detract from the content they are presenting. Sports fans are mostly interested in watching the action and judging it for themselves rather than listening to the presenter’s self-indulgent blather. The pointless speculation and analysis before and after often takes nearly as much time as the actual event and is simply unwanted padding, while in-match commentary too often resembles the monologue of the idiot in the next seat who thinks that stating the obvious is somehow clever.” Beautifully put. Although it resembles more closely the lads (mostly) in the seats behind who have imbibed large quantities of alcohol and insist on giving their views on what’s happening – and commenting on the referee’s parentage or lack of – in a deafening manner.
But it might not be such a bad idea to include sports presenters – including commentators, pundits or analysts – in national TV awards: something along the lines of the Razzies or the Golden Raspberry Awards (mock awards for the worst in films), the Turnip Prize (for deliberately bad modern art), the Barbara Dex Award (for the worst dressed artist in the annual Eurovision Song Contest) or the Bad Sex in Fiction Awards. There would be plenty of contenders for the dullest, most boring, pathetic streams of consciousness which pour forth so regularly, perhaps beginning with most cliches in a minute or the longest passage of commentary without saying anything meaningful. So many choices.
Radio commentaries should also be mentioned. The professional commentators used to delight in painting wonderful verbal pictures of the action, keeping listeners entertained as well as accurately describing in great detail what was happening on the pitch – be it cricket, football, rugby, or whatever. Now, with cricket especially, the commentators are generally so caught up with relating anecdotes about their careers that action on the field is almost an intrusion and worthy only of brief mentions. No more telling us where the ball pitched, how and where it was played, and so on, and keeping us up to date with the score. Weirdly, the TV commentators (as stated earlier) repeat the score – which is clearly displayed on screen – more often than those on radio.
Private Eye has for many years had a column featuring the more ridiculous comments made by commentators, many of them highly amusing, but it’s hard to beat the remark made by a New Zealand cricket “analyst” after a batsman hit a boundary: “Courage favours the brave.”

So I was listening to the radio at work and at some point there was an add for cricket commentary on Iheart radio and they said it was the alternative commentary and all I could imagine was some poor punk goths that got contracted to make commentary on game they knew nothing about and I was pissing myself laughing

I was going to reblog an old post of mine about Producer Vin from the Elis/John radio show because I have an update to it, but I realized that I actually want to reference several different old posts, but only a little bit from each. So instead of reblogging, I'm going to copy-paste a bit from three posts I've made in the last few months:
I also enjoyed Producer Vin hearing comedian football mentioned and immediately asking about Andy Zaltzman. There wasn’t any context from before or explanation from after that clip to explain why he’d asked, it sounds like Vin just likes Andy was impressed that they play football with him sometimes. Which is pretty cool. I think Vin’s mentioned before that he’s a cricket fan, and I am aware that Andy Zaltzman is weirdly, legitimately big among cricket fans, since he does so much cricket commentary and collation of stats. I’m hoping I’m right in remembering that I’ve heard Vin mention being into cricket, as otherwise that’s just an assumption I’m making based on his race. But I think he’s mentioned it. I quite like Producer Vin at this point. Earlier in the radio show, I was a bit disappointed by how their back-and-forth with the producers seemed a lot less fun than what I’m used to, on The Bugle where Producer Chris (and Tom before him) is a beloved figure on the show. At some point I worked out that it’s a bit of a different relationship, an independent podcast vs a live radio show. The radio producers are actually accountable to the station to make sure the comedians are saying things that will be good for listenership, so there were more interruptions that were genuine rebukes for going too far off on rants that would be inaccessible to a casual listener, whereas on a show that’s a podcast first, you know that everyone has tuned in because they like Andy Zaltzman’s inaccessible rants. I’ve never heard Chris Skinner try to curtail any of Andy’s pun runs, for any reason besides to preserve his own psychological stability. Having said that, after the first 100 episodes or so they settle into a rhythm, interactions with producers got a lot more natural and more fun. I’m at episode 200 now and Producer Vin has recently started speaking up at times during the chat to hold them to account, not for boring radio standards but for contradicting stuff they’ve said before, which can be pretty funny at times. I like him. I think he’s more naturally funny than the previous producer. Knowing he apparently approves of Andy Zaltzman, for whatever reason, makes me like him more. Oh, and I also recently heard an episode in which Harry Potter came up, and John Robins said he’s a Gryffindor, and I have not identified anyone’s Hogwarts House for about fifteen years, but the years I spent doing so instantly came back to me and I looked at my phone and said “absolutely the fuck not, 100% Ravenclaw, few cases are this clear cut.” And then a few weeks later they were on with Producer Vin and John referenced the recent episode in which he’d called himself a Gryffindor, and Vin immediately said that was one of the episodes when he was absent, which he knows because if he’d been there he would never have let him get away with that claim, he’d have interrupted to say no, 100% Ravenclaw. And I looked at my phone and said thank you. I like this guy.
...
I was listening to an episode of the John/Elis radio show today, and they were talking about when you accidentally send a text message to the wrong person, and Elis said David O'Doherty has a song like that. Which he does, but what surprised me is that the producer Vin was the one who immediately jumped in and supplied the title and summary of the song. I’d been thinking for some time that Vin can hold his own with comedians surprisingly well for a guy who’s not involved in comedy (to be honest he’ll sometimes get to the joke or punchline in a situation faster than Elis does). A while ago I heard him express interest in Andy Zaltzman, and I assumed this must be because he’s a cricket fan (I have, since making that post, heard him mention cricket several times, so I’ve confirmed that that’s not just an assumption I invented based on his race), because he’s come to this comedy radio show via radio and music, not via comedy. But now he’s out there referencing David O'Doherty songs, and I’d like to apologize to Producer Vin for not expecting him to know about comedy. The song about sending a text to the wrong person isn’t a particularly deep O'Doherty cut, he plays it a lot, but still. Impressive reference, if you happen to be the sort of person who’s impressed by Chocolate Milk Gang references, which I am. Made me like Vin even more, I’m going to miss him when they move to the BBC.
...
Further update in the running thread of “I Like Vinay Joshi, the Radio X producer, even though early on the frequent interference from radio producers annoyed me, and I realized it was because fundamentally they were trying to mould the comedy chat into a radio show and I just want it to be a comedy show, but since Vin took over I’ve found it less annoying, I mean obviously he’s still moulding things into proper radio because that’s his job, but he also tends to be slower to shut down the comedy riffs and lets it unfold a bit more naturally, plus his own interjections tend to be a lot funnier than ones from other producers, and every once in a while he’ll make a comedy reference that makes me think the reason it works so well with him is he is also inclined toward comedy and so can see where they’re going with something comedic more easily” – I have a further update in that running thread: He just made a reference to Simon Amstell’s stand-up that went over even John’s head, even though John Robins has mentioned several times being a fan of the sitcom Grandma’s House, so you’d think he’d know that. As a side note, I wouldn’t have had to actually hear John Robins say he really likes the sitcom Grandma’s House, I could have just assumed that based on everything else about John Robins. But in the episode I’m listening to now, John did not pick up on Vin’s fairly subtle dig at Amstell’s penchant for confusing drugs-based stand-up stories, a reference that I appreciated because despite also being a fan of Grandma’s House and most of Amstell’s stand-up, I also find the drug stories annoying.
And here's the update, from the final link of the final episode of their Radio X show:
Ohhhh, I see. Thank you Vin, that makes a lot of sense and explains all of the confusion. Not sure why you waited until the very last link of the whole show to clear that up, but I'm glad you did.
I know there are literally hundreds more episodes on the BBC, but it still feels like a significant end of an era because by the end, it was noticable to me how the show was funnier in the episodes with Vin there than the ones that had someone else producing, because Vin had started jumping in so often and was so funny in his own right. I've tried looking up the difference between the BBC era and the Radio X era, and everything I've read seems to suggest the BBC is a slightly less good version - sometimes people actually saying it's less good, sometimes just describing it in a way that makes it sound that way (no music and therefore significantly less chat about music; less of the structure with links; "edges smoothed out"; generally more mature versions of the comedians, which is a good thing for life in general since you should be that when you're older but makes for less fun radio; and no Vin). I'm not sure I want to jump straight into a slightly less good version of the radio show I just finished. Which was, if not 100% solid gold for every single one of the 330 hours (I just checked the total time for me, that more than I was expecting), pretty fucking great for many of them and still good the rest of the time. I'm going to go listen to Isy Suttie's audiobook about not wanting to grow up.
Also, as a final reaction to that audio clip, I can't end this post without saying, awwww. Aww. Producer Vin. Now I see why you functioned so well as an audience stand-in on the show. Aw.
