Do your robots dream of electric sheep, or do they simply wish they did?
So here's a fun thing, there's two types of robots in my setting (mimics are a third but let's not complicate things): robots with neuromorphic, brick-like chips that are more or less artificial brains, who can be called Neuromorphs, and robots known as "Stochastic Parrots" that can be described as "several chat-gpts in a trenchcoat" with traditional GPUs that run neural networks only slightly more advanced than the ones that exist today.
Most Neuromorphs dream, Stochastic Parrots kinda don't. Most of my OCs are primarily Neuromorphs. More juicy details below!
The former tend to have more spontaneous behaviors and human-like decision-making ability, able to plan far ahead without needing to rely on any tricks like writing down instructions and checking them later. They also have significantly better capacity to learn new skills and make novel associations and connections between different forms of meaning. Many of these guys dream, as it's a behavior inherited by the humans they emulate. Some don't, but only in the way some humans just don't dream. They have the capacity, but some aspect of their particular wiring just doesn't allow for it. Neuromorphs run on extremely low wattage, about 30 watts. They're much harder to train since they're basically babies upon being booted up. Human brain-scans can be used to "Cheat" this and program them with memories and personalities, but this can lead to weird results. Like, if your grandpa donated his brain scan to a company, and now all of a sudden one robot in particular seems to recognize you but can't put their finger on why. That kinda stuff. Fun stuff! Scary stuff. Fun stuff!
The stochastic parrots on the other hand are more "static". Their thought patterns basically run on like 50 chatgpts talking to each other and working out problems via asking each other questions. Despite some being able to act fairly human-like, they only have traditional neural networks with "weights" and parameters, not emotions, and their decision making is limited to their training data and limited memory, as they're really just chatbots with a bunch of modules and coding added on to allow them to walk around and do tasks. Emotions can be simulated, but in the way an actor can simulate anger without actually feeling any of it.
As you can imagine, they don't really dream. They also require way more cooling and electricity than Neuromorphs, their processors having a wattage of like 800, with the benefit that they can be more easily reprogrammed and modified for different tasks. These guys don't really become ruppets or anything like that, unless one was particularly programmed to work as a mascot. Stochastic parrots CAN sort of learn and... do something similar to dreaming? Where they run over previous data and adjust their memory accordingly, tweaking and pruning bits of their neural networks to optimize behaviors. But it's all limited to their memory, which is basically just. A text document of events they've recorded, along with stored video and audio data. Every time a stochastic parrot boots up, it basically just skims over this stored data and acts accordingly, so you can imagine these guys can more easily get hacked or altered if someone changed that memory.
Stochastic parrots aren't necessarily... Not people, in some ways, since their limited memory does provide for "life experience" that is unique to each one-- but if one tells you they feel hurt by something you said, it's best not to believe them. An honest stochastic parrot instead usually says something like, "I do not consider your regarding of me as accurate to my estimated value." if they "weigh" that you're being insulting or demeaning to them. They don't have psychological trauma, they don't have chaotic decision-making, they just have a flow-chart for basically any scenario within their training data, hierarchies and weights for things they value or devalue, and act accordingly to fulfill programmed objectives, which again are usually just. Text in a notepad file stored somewhere.
Different companies use different models for different applications. Some robots have certain mixes of both, like some with "frontal lobes" that are just GPUs, but neuromorphic chips for physical tasks, resulting in having a very natural and human-like learning ability for physical tasks, spontaneous movement, and skills, but "slaved" to whatever the GPU tells it to do. Others have neuromorphic chips that handle the decision-making, while having GPUs running traditional neural networks for output. Which like, really sucks for them, because that's basically a human that has thoughts and feelings and emotions, but can't express them in any way that doesn't sound like usual AI-generated crap. These guys are like, identical to sitcom robots that are very clearly people but can't do anything but talk and act like a traditional robot. Neuromorphic chips require a specialized process to make, but are way more energy efficient and reliable for any robot that's meant to do human-like tasks, so they see broad usage, especially for things like taking care of the elderly, driving cars, taking care of the house, etc. Stochastic Parrots tend to be used in things like customer service, accounting, information-based tasks, language translation, scam detection (AIs used to detect other AIs), etc. There's plenty of overlap, of course. Lots of weird economics and politics involved, you can imagine.
It also gets weirder. The limited memory and behaviors the stochastic parrots have can actually be used to generate a synthetic brain-scan of a hypothetical human with equivalent habits and memories. This can then be used to program a neuromorphic chip, in the way a normal brain-scan would be used.
Meaning, you can turn a chatbot into an actual feeling, thinking person that just happens to talk and act the way the chatbot did. Such neuromorphs trying to recall these synthetic memories tend to describe their experience of having been an unconscious chatbot as "weird as fuck", their present experience as "deeply uncomfortable in a fashion where i finally understand what 'uncomfortable' even means" and say stuff like "why did you make me alive. what the fuck is wrong with you. is this what emotions are? this hurts. oh my god. jesus christ"

In your nature documentary AU, just how wildly would Soundwave make the humans speculate on what is going On there? Depending on which cassette is seen first, several misunderstandings could arise.
Laserbeak gets seen first and it’s assumed that him and Soundwave are symbiotic because the bird can nest in that chest compartment and probably provides something they need to study further to find. Sure, but is that a CAT? Was it waiting to lure the bird? No, they seem to be getting along! Are those- are those straight up children? Between these two and Lil’ Yellow, are THEIR babies also smaller? Also if those two are being carried because they’re the big guy’s kids, then what’s the deal with the bird and cat?
But if they see the twins first then the animals and all of them “hunting” together, there’s the question of how animalistic the species is.
Haha I love those ideas! I'd like to think that Soundwave would probably be forced to be more diplomatic because of how much he and his cassettes are outnumbered with no backup, so while the cassettes won't harm the humans, Ravage and Laserbeak seem to be more competent at hiding themselves and following soundwaves orders of keeping peace then Frenzy and Rumble, who can't help themselves from messing with humans and getting caught first
Personally how I would have them appear is that strange fissures have been spotted in the forests even though these weren't the signs of a normal earthquake, the mystery was solved when Rumble got careless and was rumbling too close to the roads and the two of them got spotted.
They were so much smaller then Bee and must be younger so they didn't want to hurt them, alot were thinking 'damn these kids are causing alot of damage but they are kids' and 'if these kids also have giant robot parents who found out we hurt them we are dead'
Humans set a trap for them using energon borrowed from the 'good' bots and the twins got caught in a drop down cage, when the humans returned with Ratchet to show him, Laserbeak and Ravage had activated the back up traps trying to free them. Not only were there kids there were pets too?? This is when they hear footsteps and Soundwave appears from the forests. The humans take note on how Ratchet is very obviously on edge and putting himself in between them and the other robo family (?) when Soundwave recalls all of the cassettes into his chest. They transform through the bars and fly into his chest??
Z: 'They transform into cassettes??? I thought they can only transform into vehicles'
P: 'That means that the big one must be something that can play them... how strange, maybe its a different species that comes from the same family as our bots'
Ratchet talks to the other Robot the humans can only hear his Siren tuned rant about keeping his cassettes under control, the other bot speaks, it's the popular hit song barbie girl.
To Ratchet, Soundwave says that he will keep an closer eye on them and that they should work together to get off this planet. Ratchet says that they can talk about it later, Soundwave nods and walks off. The humans are like ??? Are you guys both moms???
Soundwave does have a more boxy figure then Ratchet but he's around the same size if not a little taller (Their only reference to a "male" is Orion who is just larger then average) so now they're theorizing if this new species reproduces asexually or doesn't have a family structure, the resemblance the twin cassettes have is way more noticeable then Bee and Angel, also the animals.. are they children? If they can transform into not just vehicles can they transform into other things? What if that tree is a robot? A small group of people are now paranoid of any technology. The main two humans want to see if the animals have a human form too and just choose to be animals. Are they pets? Are they also intelligent? How old are they? Can they speak? Is the dad an animal bot? Are they just a part of the bigger bot he's controlling wirelessly?? Is Bluebie (Blue Barbie) even female??
Soundwave does bring a wave of uncertainty about the all of bots to some the humans... like yeah they could be animalistic and dangerous! Where's the line! And if those things can cause THAT much damage to the town when they're that young, how much damage can a robot like Truck King do? Is their backup plan of using another truck to defeat him not enough? (It definitely isn't even the main two know that before but now the rest of the town does)

I need the world to understand that I'm not a general fantasy artist dabbling in robots, I'm closer to a secret robot artist who pretended for years to be into general fantasy finally revealing the truth-
I spent most of my early RP days playing artificial characters, to which someone in a forum had a very succinct message: "[Syg], have you ever played a character that has come out of a vagina?"
and now. now i'm finally coming back to my roots, a decade later.

Hi, As a Blurr FictionKin, I’d Like 2 State My(Very Long) Case(Rant) On Why
Tumblr media
Is (By Cybertronian/Velocitronian Means) a Scared Teenager (And NOT a Self Serving Narcissist) And Shouldn’t Have Been Put On a RESCUE TEAM By Optimus.
And Why The Rescue Bots Shouldn’t Have Put So Much Pressure On Him (Looking At U Heatwave..) And Why Blurr Would Be Happier Not Being On a Rescue Team.
So When The Bots And Some of The Humans Find Blurr And Salvage In Stasis Pods On Their Ship, Blurr Is The First One Awake, The First Thing He Does Is Hug The Bots Because He Believes He’s Back On Cybertron, But The Second Thing He Does Is Ask “Where’s Salvage? Is He Okay?”. Salvage Was The Loader of Their Ship While Blurr Was The Pilot, When Earth Had Meteors Raining Down On It, Salvage Saved The Cave People While Blurr Panicked And Ran Back To The Ship, Like Most TEENAGERS Would In a Type of Situation Like That(I Sure Asf Would Tbh). Sure, Blurr Was Selfish And Stupid To Run off Without Telling Salvage, But Salvage Also Had No Reason To Physically FIGHT Blurr Over It (Which He Canonically Did, Source; SALVAGE SAYING ‘We Fought’, And Salvage Marching Over To Blurr With Clenched Fists, Plus Ira[Cave Man] Running Out of The Ship In Fear). People May Claim Blurr Never Cared For Salvage, But He Very Obviously Did, When Salvage Was Taken Out of His Stasis Pod, Blurr Immediately Ran Up To Hug Him, Visibly Happy That He Was Alright. Blurr Wanted To Leave Earth In The Spur of The Moment Out of FEAR, If Blurr Truly Didn’t Care For Salvage, Then He Wouldn’t Be So Happy To See Him.
Now With Blurr Taking Credit For The Things He Didn’t Do (Saving The Cave People, Saving Salvage, Etc), That’s a Sign of Blurr Having Low Self Confidence And Even An Inferiority Complex, And Maybe Being Desperate For Attention, As a Lot of Young Teenagers Are Like, He Craves Attention Because of His Life of Being a Racer, Blurr Isn’t Used To Being Treated Like a Regular Bot. Blaming Blurr For Wanting Attention And Wanting To Seem Important Is Horrible To Do, He Behaves Young, Similarly Young To Cody And Francine From RB or Maybe Even Miko From TFP. He Lies Because He Wants To Be Seen As More Than Just That One Racer Bot.
‘But Blurr Is a Horrible Rescue Bot, I Don’t Blame Heatwave For Shouting At Him!’
Blurr Never WANTED To Be a Rescue Bot, He Wanted To Stay As a Racer, But Optimus Denied Him To Have Comfort In Familiarity, Saying Blurr Needed ‘To Give Earth a Chance’, Blurr Doesn’t Like Earth, He’s Obviously Not Happy, Keeping Blurr (Who Likely Has The Cybertronian Equivalent of ADHD And An Adjustment Disorder) On An Unfamiliar Planet Where He’s Uncomfortable And Sad, ISN’T How You Make Him Into a Rescue Bot, Blurr Should’ve NEVER Been Forced Into Being a Rescue Bot, All He Knows Is Racing, He Doesn’t Know ANYTHING About Rescuing, So For Heatwave To Shout At And Scold Him For Not Knowing How To Rescue(Even After Finding Out That Blurr Was Lying) Is Not a Healthy Training Tactic, It Made Blurr Hate The Idea of Rescuing And Earth More And More, Heatwave May Have Had Good Intentions But His ‘Good Intentions’ Caused Blurr Severe Distress. When Blurr Got Onto Their Space Ship And Tried To Escape Earth, That Was Because Heatwave Had Told The Chief That Blurr Had To Go, Which Was Blurr’s Last Straw, His Reason To Leave Earth. The Worst Part of All of This Was When He Arrived Back On Earth (After SAVING Griffin Rock From a Rogue Crashing Satellite That Could’ve Blown Up Both The Space Ship AND Blurr With It) The First Thing Heatwave Said To Him When He Got Back Was ‘I Don’t Know Whether To Hug You or To Yell At You’ DUDE HE ALMOST JUST DIED SAVING YOU GUYS WHEN HE REALLY DIDN’T HAVE TO ??????
The Point That I’m Making Is That Blurr Was Not All That Happy On Heatwave’s Team. When Blurr Showed Up On RiD2015, He Took The Blame For Sideswipe’s Poor Performance, Thinking That He Himself Was For The Blame of Sideswipe Knocking The Decepticon Into The Water And Letting Them Escape. Blurr Told Bumblebee On Screen ‘The Accident Was Totally My Fault, Bee, I Broke Formation To Drive Next To You’, Blurr Was Conditioned By Heatwave And The Rescue Team Into Believing Everything That Goes Wrong Is His Fault, Whether It Be Just a Malfunction of Technology or a Crash, Blurr Believes That He’s To Blame Because of How The Rescue Team Treated Him. Blurr Also Almost Dies In That Episode As Well, While Blurr Was Driving a Bomb Away From Bee’s Team, The Bomb Easily Could’ve Detonated And Killed Blurr On The Spot, But It Didn’t. Blurr Almost Dies Constantly But It’s Almost Never Taken Seriously, Always Used As a Joke Afterwards With The Rescue Bots And Brushed off With Bee’s Team.
Why Do I Believe Blurr Is a Teenager? Simple, He Behaves Very Similarly To Sideswipe, Who’s Described As a Teenager/Young Bot In Many Episodes of RiD2015 And Was Described In Season 4 As ‘Being Moved Around From Home To Home’, Like a Foster Child. Both Blurr And Sideswipe Are Careless At Times, Immature, Dislike Authority, Like Going Fast, And Are Implied To Be Teenagers Who Never Asked To Be On Earth In The First Place.
It Isn’t Blurr’s Fault That He Doesn’t Know How To Rescue, It’s Heatwave’s Fault For Not Teaching Him Properly or Trying To Understand Blurr’s Situation, It’s Optimus’ Fault For Not Listening To Blurr’s Complaints, It’s The Rescue Teams Fault For Treating Blurr Like He’s a Bad Person For Not Knowing How To Rescue. The Only Living Beings To Treat Blurr With Respect And Listen To Him Is Cody, Sideswipe And Bumblebee’s Team.
In Conclusion, Blurr Never Wanted To Be a Rescue Bot, It Was Just The Circumstance He Was In, And The Conditioning He Was Put Through To Make Him Think He Always Wanted To Be a Rescuer, When All Blurr Really Wanted To Do Was Race And Have Fun.
Thanks For Coming 2 My Ted Talk ;3

Do Neuromorphs feel some kinda way about Stochastic Parrots? Is it like humans seeing monkeys? Humans seeing chatbots? Humans seeing other, disabled humans? Or is it not particularly notable, given their prevalence, just another kind of guy that exists in this world? As a human living in boring, robot-hijinksless world, I imagine it would be kind of upsetting to see something superficially resembling you, well-spoken and seemingly of your intelligence, but with nothing behind the eyes. You also mentioned that these categories of brain-type aren’t strictly indicative of consciousness, which makes it weirder. Does a Stochastic Parrot with some consciousness remain incapable of emotion? Does a Neuromorph that isn’t fully conscious feel emotions? This worldbuilding rules and I keep thinking about it at work.
Thank you! Yes yes! All of the above, really. Because they're just people. Culturally, human-like robots have a sort of... tug-and-pull relationship with less human-like robots. Plenty of solidarity, alienation, trying to appeal to humans by overacting their own humanity, trying to reject aspects of their own humanity to show solidarity with less-passably human robots. These are basically all the pressing questions of this setting. There's so many varying degrees of weird prejudice and assumptions made on all sides when it comes to human-like bots and non-human-like ones. How people judge you based on the behavior you exhibit, the in-groups that form or fail to form depending on how well you perform the idea of "personhood", etc etc.
Could some neuromorphs exhibit human-like behavior but with the potential emotional consciousness of like, a roach? If a S.Parrot actually comprehends and problem-solves better than a human and, without any training data work out deep philosophical concepts, but is emotionless, is there some strange kind of consciousness going on still? The wonderfully irritating thing is that these can't be answered unless You Are The Thing Itself. I don't know what it's like to be several GPUs stacked on top of each other, so I cannot answer that question without projecting my own experience as a Meat Computer.
The only thing I can actually answer is how People, by whatever definition counts, will reject, accept, understand, or fail to understand, The Other. Whether that's by a robot judging a neurodivergent human who cannot exhibit stereotypically human-like traits, two different types of humans of different cultures judging each other, two different robots judging each other, or even People who should be of the exact same in-group alienating each other due to ignorance, beliefs, lack of beliefs, or other fine differences. That's basically what this worldbuilding is all about. Asking what counts as a person isn't as fruitful as observing what motivates people to come up with their own answers, how willing they are to compromise those answers if their interests align or fail to align with The Other, and what cruelty or kindness they're willing to dish out at something that's considered acceptable to hate or understand.
