My Pick: We Lie Here - Rachel Howzell Hall

Family dynamics are difficult sometimes. Overbearing parents can put a strain on children even into their adult lives. When murder is involved, family dynamics can be even more complicated. Who do you trust? This book kept me guessing and I loved every bit of it. Highly recommend!

What's a thriller without secrets and lies. Lots of unlikable characters in this one. And poor Yara cannot find a way to disagree with her mother. Mother B is controlling - always thinking about what people will think of her. You will probably yell at her a few times. There were a few red herrings, but you'll guess much of the ending and the twists. #Book 16 in the #21booksin2021 #challenge #TheseToxicThings by #NewYorkTimesBestsellingAuthor @rhowzellhall This book was recommended to me by one of my coworkers who has this in her swim bag - she reads it whenever she takes one of her daughters to swim class. IDK how she could do that. I basically read the book in 2 big chunks. The word #thriller is in the front cover and I simply couldn’t put the book down. There’s 2 simultaneous mysteries that surround #MickieLambert Okay, I may have been biased from the get go because the #protagonist was named #Michaela but the story had twists and turns and lots of action especially towards the end. I really liked a couple of passages from chapters 41 and 42. One about Mickie saying her mom’s right - she’s the fucking flower and that time should stand still for her, and other about being wary of a man who you don’t want bringing you a cool towel when you’re about to pass out from explosive diarrhea. I admit, I wasn’t surprised by the ending. I kinda suspected that [REDACTED SPOILER] - I watch too many Forensic Files, Snapped, Dateline Secrets Uncovered, etc. that I figured out pretty early on… How apropos that I’m actually writing this post while Buried In The Backyard is playing on tv in the background. Also, part of me couldn’t stop laughing at #MichaelAnthony because I have a friend w/ the same name 😂 He’s a nice guy. Maybe I’ll pass on the book to him.
