LACY ( lestappen) Part 4

Well aren't you the greatest thing to ever exist ? *

I parked my car in Parc Fermé and got out of it . I could feel the adrenaline still running in my veins and I felt giddy with happiness. Not for my first place ( or checos second ) , but rather for the Ferrari driver who'd be joining me on the podium soon. When I had comforted Charles before quali , I couldn't deny the fear that ferrari might indeed fuck up today . Fortunately, they did not seem to have done so and I was blessed with the sight of Charles smiling towards his team with stars in his eyes. In the racelights , he almost looked like an angel bathed in devotion. Soon enough, the podium ceremony approached and as I found myself still staring at Charles. As I made my way to the podium , my PR manager hissed in my ear to stop looking like I want to devour him and I hastily looked away . The podium went without much fanfare, but it had the kind of feel to it that only and only Charles brought . I once mentioned the 'Charles effect' , as I that tagged it to Daniel and subsequently had to endure being called a lovesick puppy . I changed quickly from my racesuit and went outside . I did not know where I was going yet , instead I just allowed my feet to led the way. Only as I reached the Bench , did I realize that it was the place I had comforted Charles the other day . Obediently , I took a seat and allowed the serene surrounding to bring me peace . Not too long after, I sensed someone next to me . I opened my eyes to look into bright green ones . I starlted out of my thoughts as their owner started to speak .

Congrats, said Charles , his face open and sincere. I thanked him but did not know what to say next .

I did not have to say anything. He said down and stated again

Thank you for yesterday , he said quietly. It really helped a lot.

I just shrugged and told him I said exactly what I thought. It annoyed me to no end how little confidence Charles seemed to have in himself. Here was a man perfect in every way , with the softest hair and the brightest green eyes I had ever seen , talking like he wasn't a goddam deity on earth . I realized that I was staring for too long and looked up , only to see Charles with a small smile on his face.

Like what you see ? , he asked with a raised eyebrow.

He was probably joking , but I blurted out "Yes " like an idiot .

He looked surprised, and I was about to apologize but a different look came over his face . Conventionally , I should not have been out of place , but something about it made my breath quicker . He raised his hands to cradle my face , eyes shining . There were mere inches between our faces . He tilted his head , as if to ask permission and at that very moment, I decided to risk it all and kiss him . Our lips met in the middle. He was sweeter that any honey I had ever tasted .

Episode 2:

Departure Day minus 26 weeks

This weeks theme: It’s only a cold.

Jane's week

Actually, when you have MS the words 'only a cold' are a massive understatement. That's because a common cold is caused by a virus.

According to google there are more than 200 different viruses that cause the common cold, Rhinovirus being the most common.

But because a cold is a virus, not only does is bring out the sneezes, it also increases the symptoms that are associated with my MS. Everyones experience and symptoms of MS are completely different. (You're going to hear me say that many times over the next few weeks - Sorry). So this time, for me, not only has it increased my tiredness and sent me to bed on Thursday it was accompanied by a sore throat on Friday morning.

Unfortunately, it has also brought out my tinnitus. This is something I live with and I am lucky that it does not stop me sleeping or concentrating. But this time, well, you know when you have a blasted bluebottle that keeps dive bombing you? You know it right? It is so annoying isn't it, drives you mad.

Well that's what my tinnitus has been like this week. Every couple of minutes the volume of the constant buzzing in my ear, suddenly increases and sounds like I am being attacked by a blue bottle.

Another side-effect that become worse is my find motor skills. Having to change our Curry In A Hurry poster quickly, was definitely not done 'in a hurry'. The good news is that our curry slot has completely sold out, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm slots will also sell out. Everyone is putting so much work into this.

Friday morning in particular did not go well for me. It started okay. I did my morning meditation, which is one of the pillars of the Overcoming MS program. Then Radio 2 played American Pie. I was word perfect. Pretty good I thought, considering that the last time I sung it was 11 years ago, along with my whole family during a holiday in France. I would just like to state at this point that we are not the Airey-Von-Trapp Family. In spite of the new sore throat, Friday was starting well I thought. Then I picked up an Earol spray and spayed it into my ear. As it gushed back out of my ear and down my neck, I realised that what I had actually sprayed right inside my ear was my Antiseptic Throat Spray.

So last week I was panicking about the sheer volume of things to plan and organise before we leave. but this week, I have spent some time giving some thought to my energy levels. I have created what I think a typical day looks like for me when we do the Door To Door and I will try to emulate that as much as possible. I'm a bit of a geek so I'm also going to mark myself, firstly a mark out of ten based on how much of the activity I get some and then a second mark out of 10 rating my energy levels at the end of the day.

I had the Kensis built to my own requirements, an aluminium frame kitted out with Shimano Ultegra gears & brakes. It was designed as a tourer and is still very comfortable to ride, its the one I used when I cycled the 168 miles from London to Holcombe Rogus in a day with Dan, Roddi and Nigel a few years ago. It is also the bike I will be doing most of my early training on.

This week I have been busy looking at my dietary requirements for the challenge and looking into where the best patisseries are for each day. You may or may not have noticed that wherever there is a cake shop there is usually a number of bikes parked out side!

Dear Fellow Whites,

Recently there was a webinar advertised at the college I work for on issues faced by black and indigenous peoples. I signed up for it figuring I could listen in to it in the background while getting some stuff done. This isn’t because I have a particularly careless attitude to the topic, but rather because I’ve sat through diversity training and a number of similar webinars before and did not expect much different from what I heard before: privilege, systematic racism, don’t be a racist, racism is bad.

What I didn’t realize was that this was hosted by and for black educators in America-I mean, they started making sure it’s known that everyone’s welcome regardless of race, but it was mainly an audience of black people. And I quickly learned how much is held back and sanitized for white audiences when black people talk about race. I was upset. I came out of that wondering why they hell black people weren’t more angry. It would be completely justified. Now I consider myself fairly woke. I marched in BLM, I try to self-monitor myself for bias, I try to be aware of how others are being treated around me. I came out of that surprised at how ignorant I was.

As a white woman listening to these conversations here’s what I’ll like to share with any other white people who want to be good allies:

1. Before you step in, determine if you’ll actually make things better. Sure, if you see a manager being racist at chilis employee or whatever, it might feel good to yell at them. But when you’re done, you’ll be gone and now the employee’s got their racist manager still in charge and now he’s irate. In that case, you’re doing more for you than for them. It is always best, if possible, to ask what the target of racism wants you to do about it, if anything, before acting.

2. Sometimes the best thing we can do is make space. There was a lot of talk about self-care and it dawned on me that sometimes the best thing we can do is facilitate space for black and indigenous people to do whatever self-care they need to do without us present unless they ask for us to be there with them. For example, if you see someone you work with dealing with a racist incident, cover for them so they can have some down time in the breakroom or their office.

3. Another thing they talked about was racelight or racial gaslighting which is pretty much what it sounds like. Sometimes it could be helpful to be a third party to confirm mistreatment. Don’t make a big deal of it though. Don’t apologize for “all of white people” or whatever. Just say, “I saw that person did/said this to you and it wasn’t right.” This can be particularly helpful when a person was a victim of microaggressions.

4. Be aware that we do not notice most of the racism that goes on around us. As a white person, we probably see maybe 10% of it.

5. Finally be aware that most discussions about racism around white people are filtered for a white audience especially in work or school environments. It is worth finding black conversations or events that are willing to allow you in and listening to what they say. And by willing I don’t mean like they feel like they have to but that they are truly consenting to allowing white ears. And for goodness sake, when you are there shut the fuck up and listen.
