This is the latest scandal in the alienating hellscape that is the UK. Hundreds of schools are closed because they were built using reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) which may now be unsafe. An entirely foreseeable conclusion of 40 years of the British establishment worshipping at the altar of Mises and Hayek, this secular economic religion that insists the private sector is always the best at everything despite all the evidence to the contrary. Governments deregulate and award their donors PFI contracts which they exploit to extract maximum profit from the public, reinvestment in critical infrastructure gets put on hold for a couple of years with few ill effects, neoliberals say all is well and anyone warning of the long term consequences is an extremist and now here we are. Austerity is a very expensive business!

History will judge us by the difference we make in the everyday lives of children. Nelson Mandela
A few days ago, commenting on the Tory government’s failure to take seriously the threat to children’s lives posed by school buildings containing RAAC, I highlighted that the Treasury had cut necessary funding to replace these buildings by 50%. At the time of writing I had assumed the Treasury didn’t know the critical nature of the problem and it was just the Treasury doing what all treasuries do – saving money.
I could not of been more mistaken!
On the BBC Today programme (04/09/23) Jonathan Slater, who ran the Department of Education for four years up until the mid 2020's, described how official civil service requests for more money for critical repairs to those schools that were liable to collapse were repeatedly rejected by the Treasury.
“It’s frustrating, of course, when for you the most important thing is for priority to be given to safety…. We were able to present them with really good data. WE WERNT JUST SAYING THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT RISK OF FATALITY, WE WERE SAYING THERE IS A CRITICAL RISK TO LIFE IF THE PROGRAMME IS NOT FUNDED.” (My emphasis)
Rishi Sunak was Chancellor at the time and his response to this “significant risk of fatality" and "critical risk to life" was to CUT THE FUNDING BY 50%
In other words, Rishi Sunak, knowingly and deliberately risked serious injury and the death of our children, prioritising spending cuts over children’s lives.
He is not fit to be Prime Minister. He is not fit to be in public office. He is not a fit human being.

Waddon roads go to RAAC and ruin with test centre at Hilton
Croydon has surely landed yet another (dubious) “first”: the world’s only Hilton Hotel with a driver testing centre attached. Croydon fails its test: local and national bodies have failed to come up with an obvious solution in Waddon There’s been a noticeable increase in learner driver traffic in and around the Waddon estate lately, after the government agency moved its driving test centre from…

MPs to probe ministers over poor concrete in schools
On Thursday the CYP Now website published this article which was written by Emily Harle and the initial comment is MPs are set to question ministers over the disruption caused by dangerous concrete in school buildings, following the Department for Education’s publication of a list of all affected institutions. They also provide a comment under the photograph of the MP for Worcester who is the…

List of UK schools with RAAC
We will look at the list of UK schools with RAAC. We will also look into details about RAAC and what it is and why many UK schools have to close. The issue of RAAC has also forced many schools to switched to online mode. What is RAAC? Its full form according to a BBC publication1 is “reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete”. It is a concrete crisis where school buildings are said to have used…

1,100 schools.
2,000,000+ kids.
But Sunak says it's not a big problem.
Compare and contrast to the MASSIVE reaction to the ULEZ expansion that will -- at most -- affect maybe 600,000 to 700,000 vehicles in outer London.
A situation that -- if Sunak and his government are to be believed -- is the end of civilisation as we know it.
Kind of makes you wonder where their priorities lie.

What is the difference between RAAC and RAAB?
One is dense, full of hot air, dangerous, and past its expected useful life. The other is concrete.
