I was wondering... I've been reading the self-aware au and I wonder if Manus Vindictae is also aware of the player— How does Forget Me Not even react to the concept of the player too if he's ever self-aware of it? A human who calls the shots on the story progressing (clearing levels) and also the one who beats his ass in battle (i had to insight 2 level 20 my arcanists to beat him under 10 turns in hard mode)
Can he hear the player? Can he see them? (I tend to gush over him whenever he speaks, I repeat the scenes he's in 😭 i miss him sm in the story) sorry for all these questions!!! Im so curious of self-aware aus and how they work and yours particularly was REALLY good

;R1999 FORGET ME NOT - Self Aware AU
Tumblr media
Headcanons about Forget Me Not within the Self Aware AU.
Tumblr media
this is a very good opportunity to think about non-playable characters within the game, actually! ty for the ask o7
there was someone who commented on one of my self-aware posts saying it was kind of like analog horror and I agree lolol
Tumblr media
I vaguely remember mentioning that the requirements needed in order to be aware of the Player's existence were to either reach a 100% bond and/or to be exposed to Vertin's constant presence.
Forget Me Not, as an NPC with little to no actual relevant weight in the grand scheme of things (he is only relevant during the 1929 arc as of now) doesn't meet any of these requirements, so I don't think he'd be aware of the player!
His self-awareness is limited to knowing the world around him is fake, which fuels his self-deprecating and self-defeating, deranged, depressing mindset. I like to imagine Forget Me Not doesn't even understand that the world he lives in is a game, he just knows it's fake and that no matter what he does or says, no one will truly remember. Things will inexplicably reset or loop, and even so, he's not aware of the many times he's been forced to battle Vertin and the others because the Player had to grind specific materials. And so on and so forth. In his eyes, the "high power" that could attempt to control this empty world would be Arcana and no one else--after all, she's the one who opened his eyes to the truth through indoctrination.
When it comes to the figure of the Player, I wanted to portray an extremely obscure and detached figure. Vertin herself can't even fully wrap her head around the Player's existence, she doesn't even know if you're human--if the protagonist, the character "closest" to the Player is still left in the dark about these aspects, imagine how it is for other characters who don't have the privilege of acting your will, of being your hands and eyes. Sonetto can't even get a proper look at the Player, she still needs an insane amount of time lingering around Vertin to become more attuned to this somewhat eldritch entity tied to her. Characters of "equal" importance to Vertin, such as Arcana, may be able to perceive the Player in their own unique ways just like her, but everyone else? They need these special cases to even notice such a presence. Vertin is your only link to this world. You're the one looking in, this is a one-way mirror and only a very select few can look into the abyss and realize that something -someone else- is out there, staring back.
Like, of course I'll make exceptions or bend the rules if people request direct interactions between a character and the Player, but if we're talking about the setting as it is, then this is how I picture it.
Can he hear or see the Player? Nope. He doesn't have the means to. He doesn't even know they exist.
Forget Me Not feels superior with his self-awareness, gloating about how he's not like the common rubble who goes on about their day, entirely blind to the horrors. And yet, he's not aware of his limited perception of the world. It's very ironic, the way he looks down on others for the very same crime he's guilty of: obliviousness. Forget Me Not believes everyone outside of Manus Vindictae is too dumb, too unworthy of the freedom that comes with self-awareness. But really, this is just the blind leading the blind at the end of the day. Within Manus Vindictae, we only have Arcana and Forget Me Not as important characters, so it's hard for me to make a proper frame of reference, but overall I think that only Arcana is fully self-aware. Everyone else's perception of reality are equal or slightly inferior to Forget Me Not.
I think this falls in line with his modus operandi, so to speak! The way he believes he truly understands how things are, while turning his back on reality at the same time because he can't take it. He's too delusional, too unstable and frail to acknowledge that he may not be right, that he may be just as lost as when he first opened his eyes, that Vertin, someone so utterly disconnected from his ideals and morals and views, is the "chosen one."
As usual, Forget Me Not prefers to live a lie an double down on his usual habits than realize he always had the chance to change for the better and he just never had the courage to take that road.
How would he react upon finding out the Player's existence and their opinion on him?
I don't know the specifics around how exactly he finds out this piece of information, but either way, Forget Me Not would probably be shaken to his core! This isn't an easy pill to swallow in the slightest. You have to understand that every single time you beat him in battle, he 100% believed it was all Vertin's prowess.
How was he supposed to know she had someone guiding her? How was any of this fair?
Essentially, Forget Me Not has to confront the fact that all of his struggles, all the constant fighting and every conscious choice he's made to further ruin his life, were predetermined, already set in stone by forces beyond his comprehension. It's both freeing and claustrophobic, especially for a character like him who revels in misery and his status as an underdog earning his vengeance. He's done so much, he's worked so hard to get to where he is, and sure, his life is far from ideal, he's still the same self-destructive man, but now you're telling him that this was what the world planned from the very beginning? He had no say in anything? Someone out there decided that he was meant to be like this, and even after gaining self-awareness, he wasn't good or strong enough to break away from the script--in fact, he played right into someone else's trap.
I feel like Forget Me Not, at this point, would continue to do the only thing he knows: he doubles down. He redirects all of his hatred and all of his feelings towards the figure of the Player, if only to justify his existence--he can't live as a free man, he can't be seen as a living being worthy of respect because the plot commands it, he doesn't know where his own conscience begins and where the script and dialogue he's meant to say ends. So he might as well keep digging his own grave.
He loathes the Player more than anything else, because if there was no one to play this game, none of this would've happened in the first place. He fully blames you for every single thing, no matter how big or small. Everything that is wrong with his life can be traced to the person booting up this goddamn game every single day.
And if he learns that you replay each cutscene that he's in, he takes that as an offense.
This is just cruel mockery to Forget Me Not--not only you're the reason he's turned into such a miserable excuse of a man, but now you've turned him into your personal little jester, to sing and dance for your entertainment.
If he finds out that you hate him? That's good, it's a mutual feeling and it makes this tantrum he's throwing much more easier to deal with. But if he finds out that he's your favorite character? It kills him from the inside. How dare you?
His voice gets sharper, more visceral--every word is drenched with such profound hatred that you, from your side of the screen, can't help but think that Forget Me Not's voice actor is doing such a great job! And the artstyle is so good, his expressions look so real!
I can also see Forget Me Not eventually struggle with the fact that the Player loves him and sees him as their favorite character. It's not as easy and straightforward as hating you anymore--he doesn't even know you. He doesn't even know what to trust anymore.
Given how depressing he can be, I think he may latch onto the Player? The rug keeps being pulled from under his feet each and every time, but your existence, as awful and mysterious and controversial as it may be, is real. You're real. I have a lot of thoughts about this specific dynamic, but I'll leave them for another post so this one doesn't end up being suuuper long lol
On the subject of finding out that the Player is a human.
This one is easy! If someone were to tell Forget Me Not that the Player, the bane of his existence, is a human, then he'll just be in denial about it!
I really just like the idea of Forget Me Not having no means whatsoever to interact with the Player, it makes things so much more frustrating for him. Of course this means that everything he does know come from third-parties. And this piece of information is an extra layer of stress that he can't physically process at the same time as everything else in regards to his self-awareness, so he chooses to ignore it. To debate it. To simply deny it.
What, is he just supposed to believe everything he's told about you now? He can't even perceive you properly, let alone understand the sort of creature you are and your influence on this world--for all he knows, the people claiming to see and talk to you are all liars! All of his informants and spies could just be dead wrong, they may have misheard something on the way!
You can't be human, because he can't take another blow to his pride like this. It's humiliating enough to be played like a fiddle in such a way, Forget Me Not doesn't even want to think about the possibility of this small, fake world being at the mercy of a human--part of the very same group that caused him so much pain over the years.

Major 1.9 spoilers CN spoilers
Big spoilers do not read (have I covered my bases?)
(Speculation for future patches not global friendly)
For context I am a Xenoblade fan.
Alright the interchapter of 1.9 follows the events of 1.9, the Storm of 1914 and the nuking of Arcana. We get to briefly speak to other characters about the event and potential plans for the future.
This is from listening to the interchapter being stream by Merui (idk to spell) but Druvis' is the most interesting in terms of Arcana. When its out in global Ill make a better version of these posts but the way Druvis talks about Arcana is fascinating.
Right now other than Vertin, Druvis is the only person alive (sane cause Isolde) and in the Foundation who have interacted with Arcana, Druvis likely the longest between her, Vertin and Isolde (however Isolde likely only met FMN, or it was Theophil).
I cannot word for word quote Druvis but she explicitly tells Vertin Arcana is not dead, that was not enough to completely kill her. She describes Arcana as an immovable concept, an "entity" that cannot be easily defeated. Dropping a literal nuke was not enough and she will come back.
Alright. Shes described here as an immovable entity, not easily defeatable, and the whole desire of the Manus is to return to the past where arcantists had more power, overwrite human history etc. Druvis depicts her as inhuman like (not as an arcanists not being human completely but more abstractly someone or something that cannot be easily understood or reasoned with)
In some sense she reminds me of Z in Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
Represented as a stagnant entity that refuses look towards the future both entities represent a common human fear/ anxiety of the fear of the future, its uncertainties and the nihilistic belief that nothing will get better - for Z the solution was to arrest the worlds of Xc1 and Xc2 into the stagnant world of Aionios and for Arcana it is to manipulate the power of the Storm to "return to the past".
Vertin then feels similar to Noah (thank you Return to 2009 au fic).
Both resolve themselves to fight for their lost future (both child soldiers) regardless of what the outcome may be, because in the end everyone has the right to decide their future and not have that taken away from them.
R1999 describing Arcana as almost an entity leads me to believe most definitely in some form will come back and that she embodies this fear of the future that cannot be easily defeated and put away, instead a force to overcome.

I've been reading through the TWTR series and the development you're making with Schneider seeing herself as both arcanist and human has me curious. Is TWTR!Schneider actually mixed like Satsuki or Pavia or is it something else?
Oh, that's...actually a really damn good question. Uhh
Well, generally I don't think it'll ever be properly brought up in any future chapters or stories for this AU series to its fullest extent, so if anyone wants to learn the depths of how I'm writing TWTR!Schneider's stance at being both human and arcanist, then feel free to read it here. It's a long read so take your time.
In order to understand my thought process, you'll have to understand that how I view arcanists isn't purely by race or the physicality. It's also in concept. R1999 has, thus far, shown to use arcanists as a "catch-all" embodiment of many topical interpretations. From conversations about discrimination, oppression, neurodivergence, etc.
Especially with the recent global release of the Uluru Games not only having arcanist represent the natural issue of cultural erasure or pressure, but also has this strange side plot of talking about drug abuse in athletic sports that sort of felt shoehorned in when compared to just as heavy a topic as racism. But that's just it. If you view arcanists more than just the embodiment of one thing and instead like a vessel to address many other conversations, then it'd make more sense how arcanists can both be a discussion about race, but also about drug abuse, mental health, and more.
That's how I'm writing TWTR!Schneider's situation being human and arcanist. I want to write and give her another kind of embodiment like many arcanists have. And the discussion I chose is about identity.
Gender or sexuality, it's more on wanting to talk about those feelings of struggling with your identity as a whole. The sick feelings of being misunderstood, that you are misunderstanding yourself, and the journey of self acceptance in a world that wouldn't allow it. It's about a quiet conversation with yourself that ask things like "am I wrong for being like this?", "do I have a right when I'm not born this?", or "am I broken for being this way?"
It's about that deep personal battle of knowing you'll find yourself, but also know the world won't welcome or even fully comprehend that depth that you desire. And the constant everyday talk of saying "you're enough." and "it's okay that I am who I am".
I also want to write things about TWTR!Schneider that involves other topics like chronic pain, stuff like long lasting injuries due to health or result in the desperate desire to reach that internal peace. But like how much r1999 writes it so casually, not romanticizing it, not glorifying it to the point it's terrifying how easy it is to just overlook the details because that's how I want this to feel. Natural. Unseeing. Terrifying everyday topics that sometimes, people just miss or keep to themselves.
These are things I want to express in my writing. This is TWTR!Schneider. I'll do my best to at least be decent at interpreting it.

hello hello :3 love your r1999 art, and I was curious about your painter au! Can I ask what Sonetto would be like in this world? She seems just as sheltered, but no longer indoctrinated with the foundation’s ‘order over opinion’ stuff. Does that make her more openly curious? Less professional and aloof? and I imagined her magic would not be as controlled or powerful but used in far more imaginative ways..
i also envisioned she’d being *even more* socially awkward around others and especially Vertin, since she has had basically no one else around and no diplomatic training of any kind ahsbskf
and then there’s her family who basically extort her abilities..
(Sorry if i’m rambling jdndjdn i’m just really curious, you don’t have to answer everything)
Yo!!! I'm glad a lot of you guys enjoy the au, it makes me happy that yall vibe with it ^w^ I've also gotten to discuss this with someone too and it's been great! Most of the time whenever I draw AUs it's kind of a one - and - done thing and I don't think too much about the details. But I'm particular towards this so I wanted to try to keep them similar to canon to try to get a feel of their characters, and then practice navigating them in this AU That said, while she hasn't been indoctrinated into the Foundation's teachings, she'll still have a similar mindset to canon because of her parents controlling her upbringing. She's sheltered, but she also isn't encouraged to act on her curiosity, to engage with the world too much because she's been taught to hide herself and her abilities because "the outside world is dangerous to arcanists" . There was someone who reblogged and tagged how the AU was giving Rapunzel vibes and they're not wrong!! I was actually thinking about Rapunzel when coming up with this too. The painting, and the controlling and restrictive parents... However, unlike Gothel, I wanted to make her parents a bit more complicated. They cared for her once, but now they've lost that and are more concerned with utilizing her abilities for their gain. It's this complicated relationship that also keeps Sonetto from acting against her parents wishes. In the hopes, that maybe they'll show that same love they gave to her before. Another reason would be because she's never had someone Vertin to show her another perspective outside of it. She's aloof and withdrawn but despite that still has a yearning for the world. A yearning she refuses to indulge in because of the reasons above. Her magic would indeed be not made for combat or powerful. She wouldn't be allowed to hone it further than what she's asked to do. She's not completely locked away from the world though, just that she'll have minimal interactions. So she's awkward and hopelessly inept in socializing LMAOOO But yeah!! So far that's what I've had in mind for the direction this AU is gonna take. Of course, feel free to put your own spin on it too! :DD I want to elaborate more but that'll be a spoiler alert HAHAHAHA jkjk I'm also just making it as I go and hopefully winging it I still haven't gotten the chance to expand on these ideas yet because pre-finals are kicking my ass but maybe after When I have time, I'll get the chance to do so For now, thank you plenty for the ask and for taking the time to read this! I... am not good with keeping conversations short aksjdgajhs So thank you, for listening :D I hope you have a good one!!!

I have some thoughts in my mind lately in the Self aware au R1999 (I'm invested so badly), I was wondering are there any arcanist that resented the player maybe at first or still having resentment on them? Because if the player wasn't there they would be " free " (which I would doubt since there are many players and it would still happen nonetheless but just speaking from there perspective) did they just helplessly or casually got over it after some time and accepted the fact it was a game I mean they were levelled up by the player, the player was the reason why they were getting stronger and winning every battle but I have a feeling some arcanist would have some doubt in them since everything was just a script in the first place all the things that happened to them were meant to happen for the plot, I don't about how to reach when they find out that the player was a human though.. But just like earlier if the player never was here then they would be " free ",they wouldn't know it was just some game (they gonna go bree since they wouldn't exist)(RAHHH I might have wronged what I said in this😭 I just have a thought in my mind about them doubting, feeling frustrated and all...Btw I am badly down bad for your writing 💜💜💜 I admire it so well.. 🥹🫶🫶 can I get a hello Please.. ?💜🥹💜 I'd go crazy being noticed on a writer I admire)
hiiii helloooo hola bonjour and many other greetings o7 really glad you like my writing!
your question is very broad, so I can only make a quick list to categorize all the characters and how I think they'd feel overall towards the Player within this AU! since you only mentioned arcanist, I assume you mean the playable characters only, so that's also the group I'll be tackling
I don't have a good grasp on every single character, so some of these are subject to change as I learn more about them too o7
It's very, very complicated.
Vertin. Door. Mesmer Jr. Bkornblume. I consider these characters to be "outliers" in terms of how they perceive the Player--in the sense that their opinion fluctuates and varies a lot, so they cannot be easily labeled in any of the other categories. They're contradicting or find themselves at odds with themselves, seeing the figure of the Player and everything the Player represents as positive and negative influences simultaneously. To them, you're a close friend and a distant stranger, a saviour and a harbinger of ruin, a source of knowledge and the end of everything--you're all of these, all at once.
as for the rest, I only described the opposite ends of the spectrum and the neutral category!
Extremely resentful and hateful
Desert Flannel. Erick. Mondlicht. Oliver Fog. Pavia. Sonetto. Sweetheart. This one is pretty straightforward--these are the characters who are defensive, who feel like your mere existence is mocking them, who have gone through so much and feel humiliated to know you're casually looking at them from above, so out of reach and superior and unbothered by their pain. But also characters who are combative or quick to identify you as a threat, such as Pavia and Sonetto, because you go against everything they believe in.
Stressed, requires a lot of time to get over it
AliEn T. Bette. Bunny Bunny. Charlie. Ezra. Kanjira. Matilda. Pickles. Ulu.
Mostly troubled, but open to change
6. Mr. APPLe. Darley Clatter. Diggers. Druvis III. La Source. Lilya. Melania. Ms. Moissan. Poltergeist. Zima
Neutral, indifferent and/or unaffected
Baby Blue. Click. Dikke. Jessica. John Titor. Rabies. Sputnik. Tennant. Tooth Fairy. Twins Sleep. These characters remain neutral, but do not confuse their indifference or lack of reaction for ignorance. Some of them aren't quite lucid, conscious or old enough to fully understand their surrounding, such as Rabies and Twins Sleep, but I would say the rest are grounded enough as to not let a figure such as the Player affect them in any intense or extreme way. Some of them simply don't care because this entire reveal doesn't exactly change their routine nor perception of the world. Some are choosing to remain neutral until they gather more information to form a solid opinion.
Mostly curious, but open to change
A Knight. Cristallo. Kaalaa Baunaa. Ms. NewBabel. Necrologist. Satsuki. Spathodea. Voyager.
Eager to learn, requires a lot of stress to be affected
37. An-an Lee. Centurion. Eagle. Horropedia. Leilani. Nick Bottom. Shamane. Sotheby. X.
Extremely intrigued
Eternity. Medicine Pocket. Ms. Radio. ONiON. Regulus. TTT. The Fool. Regardless of how your existence affects these characters, their curiosity and the new opportunities and possibilities you bring along are much more important to them. These are characters who seek to profit from you in some way, who see you as a fascinating subject to study, who may even relate in a way to the role you play as the Player, who may pity you.

A short (or not) ramble of scenarios and questions for reverse: 1999 self aware. (sorry if this bothers you, I just don’t have enough confidence to post it on my own blog (plus I love your content))
- Okay so first of all, in the main page of the game, when you click on the upper left corner with your level and username, you go to a screen with Vertin looking fly as ever along with some user information.
So if Vertin can see the game’s ui, then she can see the year in which the player has joined the game (2023-2024). I haven’t dived deep into Vertin’s character so I can’t portray her reaction to much, but I feel like she would tell this info to someone close like Sonetto.
Also our motto: I put “When in a rush, say ‘runs in high heels cutely.’”. I’d be so embarrassed if anyone (even fictional sentient characters) saw that. Like im dead.
On that topic, when you mentioned in your Sonetto self aware post that she can sometimes see us, and honestly, I’d be even more embarrassed. Cause like, if any of the characters from games I played, were sentient and could see me, id pray they didn’t see my bad angle. Like imagine looking up to the sky to see, just for a second, the chin of a head as the hands go to scratch their nose. Like the first impressions I would make.
- P2p players. Imagine the player spending money on the game (at the risk of Vertin possibly seeing their credit card number) to help level up or get costumes for their fave characters.
(Some misc. questions)
-what would happen if player didn’t log in the game for a while (a week to a month as best) cause I would ditch some games to spend more time on others
- What does Vertin think of the mail messages that the player gets? Like the latest mail I got was the discord event invitation. Upon closer inspection and critical thinking, it would hint that there would be more players other than us because it says the winners get 60 clear drops (oh and money too)
- If I remember correctly, I think you mentioned about Vertin hearing the player sometimes. So imagine her hearing us trash talk certain character *cough* Constantine *cough*.
(Anyways, I love your content ❤️ especially your fmn headcanons, can’t wait to see more posts!!)

;R1999 - Self-Aware AU (2)
Tumblr media
Answering some questions and discussing the Self-Aware AU. A follow up of this post.
Tumblr media
not a bother at all, you bring up really good questions and details that are fun to explore! I'm glad you like my stuff, have a nice day o7!
Tumblr media
On the subject of Vertin seeing the player's profile.
With the way I intended to portray Vertin within the AU, I don't think she would be affected by the date on the Player's profile!
This is the date you came into contact with her from your perspective, whatever time and space that flows within your world, not hers─the world behind the fourth barrier that she cannot see nor hear nor even fathom, let alone try to make sense of. In a way, it's like expecting ants to care about concepts we made up, such as time. They understand night and day, they do not understand 3PM nor 8AM.
Is it truly proof that time can go beyond 1999, when this is something that only she can see? When it doesn't affect a single thing within her universe by being part of a game menu meant for your eyes only? There's also the fact that she finds out the proper time of the world in the 1.4 update, in Chapter 05.
Her dynamic with the Player is something I like to keep vague, so that everyone can fill in the blanks, but ultimately it is something so complex and private for Vertin─who sees it as a one-sided relationship, since she cannot hear nor see you, unlike other arcanists who may reach the 100% bond─that I don't think she would talk about it with anyone, not even Sonetto! The name on your profile and whatever message you've written there are secrets she will take to her grave. The idea of Vertin being the eyes and hands of the Player, but having no way to truly see or hear them makes for a really fun concept to explore!
And on the subject of messages, let's be honest, if you've written something funny or some modern shitpost, chances are she won't understand it LMFAO so it's okay! I literally just have my socials and "men enjoyer" listed there.
Oh! But since you brought it up, the message section could be a fun, little way to communicate with Vertin, since she can read what's on there!
As for P2P players, Vertin wouldn't see any information from the Player's credit card since that's something that happens outside the app lolol. Like, to me, it directly opens to google play transaction stuff.
On the subject of the player dropping the game for long periods of time.
Hmm, in the first post I said that there might be characters ouside Vertin and her suitcase who may be self-aware, with their own goals and such. But nothing truly "matters" unless the Player is there to witness it. So to keep including these possibilities and details, I feel like there's two options, pick whichever you like the most!
One, time continues as usual within the game─but once it reaches an important date where the plot is meant to kick in with some important event, it simply resets back to where you left it. This is a world that exists outside of your perception, but cannot continue without you.
Two, time freezes entirely within the game─but only for those who are not self-aware. Keep in mind we're talking about long periods of time, this wouldn't happen if you log in every day, or every few days. This is what happens when your phone picks up the fact that Reverse: 1999 is one of the unused apps taking up space in your phone. This is a world that stops existing once you stop looking at it.
In both options, the Wilderness would remain unaffected as it seems to be entirely disconnected from the flow of time and space outside of it.
On the subject of the game's mail.
Since the messages auto-delete and all, I can't check but I'm pretty sure Vertin receives mail too? There were a few ones from a few characters a while back like Druvis III or An-an Lee, and I think the implication is that they were vaguely addressing Vertin?
If someone has screenshots and can confirm this, please let me know!
Either way, the easy answer is that yeah, she knows this is a game, so she could make the assumption that there's more players. She has access to your friend list, after all! And even if you don't have anyone added, the fact that it exists is enough for her to start connecting the dots.
I don't remember saying that Vertin can hear the Player, though! I think I was pretty consistent with her not being able to see nor hear you, to have the Player as some sort of eldritch, unknowable entity. But I also write so much stuff in this blog that it's hard to keep up sometimes lolol, if I've mentioned somewhere that Vertin can hear the player, it was a mistake!
