Le prix du compromis

S’attacher à des principes

De nos jours, l’Église manque cruellement d’hommes qui s’attachent à des principes sans les compromettre. De nombreux soi-disant chrétiens se vantent de leur caractère vertueux, mais abandonnent leurs convictions dès lors que le compromis leur est plus bénéfique et avantageux. Peut-être reconnaitrez-vous l’un ou plusieurs de ces exemples :

• Affirmer croire en la Bible, mais fréquenter des Églises où elle n’est pas enseignée.

• Convenir que le péché doit être puni, mais pas lorsqu’il s’agit des péchés de ses propres enfants.

• S’opposer à la malhonnêteté et à la corruption jusqu’à ce que l’on doive confronter son propre patron et risquer de perdre son emploi.

• S’attacher à des principes moraux élevés jusqu’à ce que ses convoitises soient attisées par des relations qui vont à l’encontre de ce qu’enseigne la Parole.

• Être honnête jusqu’à ce qu’un peu de malhonnêteté permette de gagner de l’argent.

• S’en tenir à ses convictions jusqu’à ce qu’elles soient défiées par quelqu’un qu’on admire ou que l’on craint.

Les compromis

Tristement, ce genre de compromis n’est pas une exception, mais plutôt la règle. Cependant, il ne faut pas croire que les chrétiens du xxe siècle soient les seuls experts dans l’art du compromis. Les Écritures regorgent d’exemples de personnes qui ont usé de compromis, y compris de très bons serviteurs de Dieu :

• Adam a compromis la loi de Dieu, a suivi sa femme dans le péché et a été chassé du paradis (Ge 3.6,22‑24).

• Abraham a compromis la vérité, a menti concernant sa relation avec Sara et a failli perdre sa femme (Ge 12.10‑12).

• Sara a compromis la Parole de Dieu et a envoyé Abraham vers Agar qui a conçu Ismaël et a détruit la paix au Moyen-Orient (Ge 16.1‑4,11,12).

• Moïse a compromis l’ordre de Dieu et a perdu le privilège d’entrer en Terre promise (No 20.7‑12).

• Samson a compromis sa dévotion en tant que Nazaréen et a perdu sa force, sa vue et sa vie (Jg 16.4‑6,16‑31).

• Le peuple d’Israël a compromis les commandements de l’Éternel, a vécu dans le péché, et, alors qu’il se battait contre les Philistins, a perdu l’arche de Dieu (1 S 4.11). Le peuple a également compromis la loi de Dieu par le péché et l’idolâtrie et a perdu son pays (2 Ch 36.14‑17).

• Saül a compromis la Parole divine de Dieu en ne tuant pas le bétail de ses ennemis et a ainsi perdu son royaume (1 S 15.3,20‑28).

• David a compromis les principes de Dieu, a commis l’adultère avec Bath-Schéba, a assassiné Urie et, de fait, a perdu son enfant (2 S 11.1 – 12.23).

• Salomon a compromis ses convictions, a épousé des femmes étrangères et a perdu l’unité de son royaume (1 R 11.1‑8).

• Judas a compromis son supposé dévouement à Christ pour trente pièces d’argent et a été séparé de Christ pour l’éternité (Mt 26.20‑25,47‑49 ; 27.1‑5 ; voir aussi Jn 17.12).

• Pierre a compromis ses convictions concernant Christ, l’a renié et a perdu sa joie (Mc 14.66‑72). Plus tard, il a compromis la vérité pour se faire accepter des judaïsants et a ainsi perdu sa liberté (Ga 2.11‑14).

• Ananias et Saphira ont compromis leur parole concernant leur don, ont menti au Saint-Esprit et ont perdu leur vie (Ac 5.1‑11).
