[I'm gonna take a shot at your post asking for people's opinions on "J"!]
I was pleasantly surprised. Jaehyun showed us so many different elements of himself and I feel like I have a more accurate perception of him as an artist and a human being now that we've gotten to see where his mind goes when he's given the opportunity to express himself outside of 127
My parents raised me on 80s and 90s Soul and R&B and I was impressed by how well he was able to portray these styles of music despite not having the same level of familiarity with it as an American around his age would. However, I 100% agree with you and your recent anon about how he lacked direction. He had a vision and deep passion but it wasn't enough. The album wasn't well-defined
I don't fault him for it because, again, he's coming at it from the angle of a Korean with limited exposure, but it's something that I definitely noticed. I'm sure that as time goes on, he'll discover precisely what direction he wants to take his music in, he'll learn how to communicate his ideas consistently from start to finish, and he'll decide whether or not he wishes to keep sharpening the skills required to create R&B/Soul that is more faithful to the source but still unique to him
I haven't been keeping up with most of the pre- and post-release promotion & activities because I've been busy with work, so I unfortunately don't have much to say on that front
All in all, I deeply enjoyed what he gave us and I look forward to his future output! He has so much potential and I hope it materializes into something incredible
Oh! Another thing that I came to realize while listening is that Jaehyun is not as strong a vocalist as I initially believed him to be. In 127, it wasn't noticeable to me because their vocal coaches spend great effort ensuring that each member has parts that compliment their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. His voice is gorgeous, but when he has to carry an entire song by himself, his lack of skill in some areas becomes apparent. I experienced a similar thing when Ten's mini album came out
I asked my little sister about it (she's been following & listening to NCT since pre-debut) and she was like, "well...yeah. You haven't t noticed yet? He's never been the strongest singer, lol" I still love him, though 😅
I like your point about the lack of exposure. Or, maybe, in his case a lack of background and history associated with each subgenre of r'n'b (as he can listen to practically any song from any era now on streaming platforms). You know, how I complained about the mix of images in Smoke's concept. To break the rules one needs to perfectly know the basics first to know what to deconstract, what can be changed, what not.
(Pablo Picasso's art evolution)
Jaehyun is 27, however he doesn't have years of musical education, he explained himself he had to carve moments out of his busy schedule to songwrite and learn music composion software. So, really, can't blame him for having passion but not a clear vision. "Juvenile" is not a bad description, just a description of the first attempt. "J" is a chick, heh. There is room to grow.
Jaehyun evidently gravitates towards non-Korean music (and his best friends are all foreigners, he drank too much of that Connecticut milk, I fear), therefore we can expect him to continue the r'n'b route. Although, I think he will be more inclined to go for newer, more modern sound (further from Can't get you and closer to Horizon).
About the voice. Really? Technically, range vise or emotionally? "Completely" aside, it was out of his comfort zone. However, I think he did a good job on the rest (we are not comparing him with Do, there is a change of level, naturally). I do think his musicality is underdeveloped, but he knows (or can try and achieve) how to produce a nice fitting sound. I think his delivery makes "Easy".

TOP 5 MUSIC GENRES
ੈ♡˳ Music is our friend when we are sad, lonely, happy, or even mad. For some people, music is considered life. We also listen to a wide variety of music genres that suits our own taste and preference. Let's get to know five music genres that you may have on your playlist!
★゜・。。・゜゜・。。・゜☆゜・
⸙͎ 1. POPULAR MUSIC 🔮
Popular Music or Pop Music is a genre of music that describes music that is mainstream and originated in the 1950s. Pop music is characterized by its upbeat rhythms, catchy melodies, and easy-to-remember lyrics.
Michael Jackson is often described as the King of Pop with multiple hits like ❛Thriller❜ and ❛Beat It.❜ Madonna is dubbed as the Queen of Pop and has been widely recognized with her songs such as ❛Material Girl❜ and ❛Like A Virgin.❜
★゜・。。・゜゜・。。・゜☆゜・
⸙͎ 2. HIPHOP MUSIC 🎧
Hip hop is a musical genre from the inner cities of the United States. Rappers usually provide the vocals in hip hop songs. These musicians use a rhythmic vocal technique over the music of a song. Instead of instruments, the backing music tracks come from a DJ playing records and performing turntablist techniques.
The prominent Hip-hop artists are Snoop Dogg with the hit ❛Young, Wild, and Free❜ and Eminem's ❛Without Me❜ and ❛Rap God.❜
★゜・。。・゜゜・。。・゜☆゜・
⸙͎ 3. ROCK MUSIC 🎸
Rock is a genre of popular music that originated in the United States in the 1950s and spread to the rest of the world. It is characterized by its use of electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and sometimes keyboards, as well as its emphasis on live performance and the importance of the vocalist. There are many different subgenres within rock music, including classic rock, hard rock, heavy metal, punk rock, alternative rock, and many others.
Among the top famous rock bands are Queen with ❛Don't Stop Me Now❜ as one of their hit songs and Metallica with ❛Master of Puppets.❜
★゜・。。・゜゜・。。・゜☆゜・
⸙͎ 4. RHYTHM AND BLUES MUSIC 🎤
R&B music is also known as rhythm and blues or, occasionally, R'n'B. R&B is a conglomerate of several early 20th-century Black American music art forms. R&B first evolved in post-World War II Black communities and contained elements of soul, gospel, jazz, and of course, the blues.
Known R&B songs are ❛I Just Called To Say I Love You❜ by the great Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston's ❛I Will Always Love You❜ as well as ❛Saving All My Love For You.❜
★゜・。。・゜゜・。。・゜☆゜・
⸙͎ 5. COUNTRY MUSIC 🪕
Country music often includes the banjo, steel guitar, fiddles, and harmonicas as the primary instruments. The music uses repetition, simple chord structures, and lyrics that are easy to remember. Many country songs have a catchy chorus, and some singers are known for their twangy singing voices that come from Southern accents.
Dolly Parton and Shania Twain are top country music artists that made a huge impact to the world of music with popular songs ❛Jolene❜ and ❛Many Man of Mine❜ respectively.

🚨 IMPORTANT REMINDER: 🚨 Music Industry is not the same anymore. There is an Evil agenda now, evil men run the business now. Beware of what type of music you listen to. Not all music is good for your ears.
To my cherished readers, particularly those who reminisce about the golden eras of the 80s and 90s music scene, I pose a crucial question: Have you noticed the stark degradation within the music industry? Can you recognize how the once pristine quality of lyrics has plummeted into a sea of mediocrity?
Let's face the stark reality: The music business, currently helmed by nefarious entities, is orchestrating a sinister agenda. They are actively eradicating any semblance of mercy from our musical landscape. Love ballads, altruistic anthems, and community-minded tunes are being ruthlessly suppressed.
Gone are the days when songs served to uplift, educate, and inspire. Instead, a troubling trend has emerged—a relentless push towards the propagation of malevolent messages. They inundate the airwaves with glorification of drug culture, senseless violence, and degrading discussions on trivial matters.
This is a wake-up call, a clarion call to arms against this insidious manipulation. The powers that be do not wish for you to indulge in music that nourishes the soul. They crave your consumption of depravity, feeding you a steady diet of negativity and amorality.
The rap and R&B communities, in particular, find themselves ensnared within this web of suppression. They are shackled, forbidden from expressing kindness or mercy through their lyrical prowess.
So, my friends, heed this warning. Realize that the melody you hear today is not the melody of yesteryears. It is a discordant symphony, orchestrated by those who seek to poison the hearts and minds of our society.
Stand vigilant. Demand better. And let us strive to reclaim the purity and compassion that once graced our musical landscape.
Together, we can usher in a new era—a renaissance of music that uplifts, empowers, and inspires.
#WakeUpCall #MusicRevolution #DemandMercyInMusic 🎶🌟
P.S:
Here is a ghetto version of this speech for my ghetto readers:
IMPORTANT REMINDER:
"I want to give a reality-check to my readers, especially the ones from the 90s era and 80s era, I want to ask them a question, have you noticed the degradation of the music industry? Did you notice how the quality of lyrics have gone from good to very bad quality? This is the agenda of the criminals running the music business, they don't want to see any songs that have merciful lyrics in them, no more love songs, no more altruistic songs, no more protect the community songs, no more teach your knowledge to the youth songs, they refused to see any of this mercy in our songs, they blocked all lyrics that have mercy in them, all they want to push is evil lyrics, do drugs, kill each other, talk about stupid topics like ass and titties, this is the agenda they're pushing in the music industry nowadays. That's why I'm giving you this wake-up call, you have to realize that they don't want you to listen to good music, they want you to listen to evil music only, it's happening to the Rap community and the R'n'b community as we speak, they are not allowed to be kind in their lyrics, they are not allowed to be merciful in their lyrics."
Guess what? Oh, yeah, I said it, sue me, see if I give a fuck, I'm telling you that you all listen to garbage music, just because it's on your TV screens doesn't mean it's good music, I encourage you to turn off that garbage.
Listen to the 90s and early 2000s music when the artists were allowed to be kind, loving, full of mercy in their songs, nowadays they aren't allowed to have any merciful lyrics, all they talk about is evil topics.
Do you see what I see? Or are you just dumb? Which one is it?
Back in 1980s:
The Principles of Hip Hop was: Peace, Love, Unity, and Having Fun
Nowadays in 2024:
The Principles of Hip Hop is: Violence, Hate, Division, and Having drug addicted listeners.
A lot of people don't know because they're dumb, stupid, they are the sheep that are being misled and you have to help the sheep by warning them to not listen to this evil music business anymore and go back to the 90s era, when the music business was full of mercy and kindness, it was all about having fun and good manners, but nowadays they are pushing only evil topics now.
Christian quotes :
#1 - If sheep do not have the constant care of a shepherd, they will go the wrong way, unaware of the dangers at hand.
#2 - The mere presence of the shepherd puts the sheep at peace. When he is near, they don't panic, and they don't fight. They can lay down in peaceful slumber.
The older generation are the sheperds.
The new generation are the sheep.
You have to teach them and show them the way or they will never know, they are all sheep, they are sleeping, you have to give them this wake-up call.
I encourage you to read this wiki page and learn the meaning of the term "Each one teach one", click on the link:

Meraki Trice Assures "You'll Regret Me" In Latest Single Meraki Trice is a southern-born queer artist who brings a captivating blend of R'n'B and Soul to the music scene. With a desire to tell alternative narratives and explore themes of queer love, mental health, and transcendence, Trice's music takes on an ethereal and evocative quality. What sets Meraki Trice apart is their refusal to conform to mainstream norms or adhere to predefined rules and aesthetics. Their artistry is a deeply personal expression, carving out their own sonic and lyrical path in a world that often leans towards standardization. This uniqueness is what makes their work so refreshing and appealing. Hailing from North Carolina, Meraki Trice embraces a fierce queen persona, allowing their artistry to shine through. A gifted singer, songwriter, and producer, they make a powerful return to the music scene with "You'll Regret Me," a stunning gem that carries a slightly dark undertone. Sonically, the song explores electronic territories but defies categorization due to its authenticity and originality. It all works harmoniously to complement Trice's ethereal and angelic vocals, creating an intriguing contrast with the haunting instrumental backdrop. The song starts with familiar post-breakup emotions, reflecting the melancholy and unease associated with such experiences. However, in the second half, "You'll Regret Me" flips the script, questioning the natural tendency to internalize external events beyond our control. It challenges our assumptions, suggesting that the fault may lie with the other person instead of ourselves. This shift aims to empower listeners to love themselves and challenge self-blame. "You'll Regret Me" is a dark ballad intertwined with a hyper-pop dance beat, showcasing Trice's rejection of self-blame and an embrace of self-worth. Inspired by a personal breakup, the song paints a picture of resilience and strength. Instead of wallowing in sorrow, Trice envisions a scenario where they dress up, go out with friends, and dance away the pain. The track speaks to Trice's struggle with anxious attachment, a challenge that often leads to self-blame in relationships. Through "You'll Regret Me," they encourage listeners to shift the focus from external factors to self-love and acceptance. It's a powerful anthem that offers solace and empowers individuals to embrace their worth. Stay tuned for more incredible music from Meraki Trice as they continue to craft unique and thought-provoking experiences through their art. Lost Souls
Here I am with the first part of this month’s themed week in “Let’s Listen to”! Today’s subject is one of the most awaited released of the Japanese summer, the latest effort of the pop artist Kenshi Yonezu, the fifth album Stray Sheep, came out today. The album’s concept comes straight from the title, a reference to the parable of the “stray sheep” told in the New Testament, used to describe the sense of confusion and disorientation brought by the current times. And now... let’s review!
-Campanella: the album opens with the first lead-track, featuring a pretty peculiar sound; soft beats accompain Kenshi’s flowing and natural vocals, in a light and upbeat pop melody; a nice opening song, with an interesting vocal interpretation. ---> 9/10
-Flamingo: one of the leads from the tenth single sees a more decise sound, where Kenshi’s vocals move swiftly in the articulated melody, well underlined by the bass; a flowing and easy song, which keeps up the positive atmosphere of the album. ---> 8.5/10
-Kanden (Electroshock): the second lead-track of the album, used as theme for the drama MIU404, is kicked off by pretty positive notes, surrounded by a pretty simple beat; the vocals are nice and pretty balanced, especially in the refrain, making it even catchier; a nice track, dyed by a jazzy vibe. ---> 8.5/10
-Placebo (ft. Yojiro Noda): this song starts with soft notes, accompained by a pretty relevant beat; Kenshi’s voice is steady, keeping up the melody along with interesting guitar notes and a pretty efficient duet with the lead-singer of Radwimps, in another catchy and easy track. ---> 8.5/10
-Paprika: the lead of the thirteenth single starts with slower and melancholic notes, disposed in a peculiar way; Kenshi’s vocals are pretty suggestive, driving an electronic and fascinating melody, made of a balance between positive and melancholic shades; a song which brings the album to a maturer side. ---> 9/10
-Uma to shika (Horse and deer): natural vocals and nice guitar notes open the lead of the twelfth single, used as theme for the drama No Side Game; the rhythm builds up slowly, leading up to a pretty pleasant melody, with not so exaggerated electronic effects, greatly helped by a deep vocal interpretation; a distinctive track. ---> 9/10
-Yasashii hito (Kind person): this song sees sweet vocals by Kenshi, accompained by warm guitar notes, leading up to a slow and melancholic ballad, where the vocal interpretation is the most remarkable highlight of the track; a track which shows Kenshi Yonezu’s emotional side at best. ---> 9/10
-Lemon: the lead song of the ninth single, theme song of the drama Unnatural, starts with Kenshi’s deep vocals, accompained by a nice melody and a flowing beat, creating an intense atmosphere; the melody improves more thanks to a rock vibe, especially in the refrain, making this track even better, without forgetting the vocal interpretation, which improves more in the second part. ---> 9.5/10
-Machigai sagashi (Look for a mistake) -Masaki Suda cover-: the song starts with twittering birds, bringing back the naturalist touch seen in Kenshi Yonezu’s music, where the vocals become sombre and mature, accompaining a crystalline fascinating melody; a song which looks back to this artist’s origins, exalted by the vocals and a good use of electronic notes. ---> 9.5/10
-Himawari (Sunflower): this song brings back the positive vibe in the album, with soft notes opening the song, whose rhythm is pretty fast and the melody is upbeat; the vocals are living, accompained by a fresh guitar, in a pleasant and catchy song, featuring a sort of exotic vibe. ---> 9/10
-Mayoeru Hitsuji (Stray sheep): the title-track starts with a pretty steady melody, featuring decise and dark-ish tones; Kenshi’s voice is intriguing, bringing out a really peculiar vocal interpretation; a good song, built by a various and fresh melody, improved by a nice piano work. ---> 9/10
-Décolleté: this song sees a retrò vibe, where the enigmatic notes mix up with a balanced beat for a quite paced melody, driven by Kenshi’s simple vocals; the song is pretty good, where the best feature is a curious mix of R'n'B and folk sound. ---> 9/10
-Teenage Riot: the second lead of the tenth single starts with interesting guitar notes and a fast beat; the vocals are pretty steady, but fitting with the unpredictable approach of the song, whose melody evolves even thanks to a balanced drum work; another great track, exalting once again Kenshi’s singing skills. ---> 9/10
-Umi no yuurei (Spirits of the sea): the lead of the eleventh single, used as theme for the movie Kaiju no kodomo, is kicked off by Kenshi’s clear vocals, accompained by a nice piano, where the rhythm is made by a slow and articulated beat, where the vocal interpretation is filled by nostalgical shades; a quite compelling track, where the melody evolves with suggestive electronic notes. ---> 9/10
-Canary: the album ends with a quite long song, staying in the nostalgical side; Kenshi’s voice is intense, accompained by clear piano notes, driving up a slow and melodious theme, making the song even more compelling than expected; the vocal interpretation reaches high peaks, especially in clearer notes, where the violin gives an extra touch to an already awesome song. ---> 9.5/10
Final Vote ---> 9/10
Kenshi Yonezu is definitely an unique artist within the Japanese pop scene and a confirmation of how in music surprises never end. In ten years of career he always brought something new and refreshing, reinventing his concept through his suggestive art and melodies touching each emotion possible. Stray Sheep represents a fundamental step forward in his path, since it extended his sound to a wider audience, even outside Japan, bringing upbeat melodies, melancholic notes, compelling and various vocals, and a touch of nostalgia and nature, reprised by Kenshi’s early style, showing how pop music is able to bring in unexpected directions and to further horizons. This album is a breath of fresh air, needed in troubled times like these, whose influence is felt even inside each track, and a good companion for everyday life, making it more pleasant and flowing, without any doubt. If you are looking for an intense pop artist, whose sound goes out of schemes, Kenshi Yonezu is your answer, especially with this fifth album. An album for who already knows Kenshi’s unique world and for who needs to get into his music, made of positivity, nostalgia and feelings.
That’s all folks! See you with the second part of this month’s themed week in “Throwback Thursday”!
Thanks for the reading!

14KT / IAMABEENIE - For My Sanity - soul-jazz-hip-hop on First Word Records
Following up 'The Power of Same', the first single off 14KT's new project, featuring Muhsinah, and remixed by Kaidi Tatham, 'For My Sanity' is a "freedom project", an album rooted in free creation, without being tied down by bars, patterns, scenes, and sequences. The intention behind this long-player is clearly stated all throughout the 12 tracks: releasing the angst of the current climate we are facing through collective artistic means. "I made all the music really late at night after my day-to-day work, as an escape from "what I normally do". Paired with the everyday struggles of being an artist, it was very stressful hearing about so many deaths––especially due to law enforcement. Making "For My Sanity" was how I was trying to find peace of mind every night so I could go to sleep." says 14KT. The themes of the album sway gracefully from personal philosophies and creeds, to burning social matters and celebration of the importance of family and genuine, fruitful friendships. If we were to classify this in a genre, we would say For My Sanity is a jazz record, at its core, but elements of hip hop, soul, r'n'b and latin music are easily recognisable and at home on the album. "I challenged myself to create a jazz album, primarily using Native Instruments Maschine. 85% of the album was created on there. The rest was my amazing friends and myself playing instruments." KT continues. 'For My Sanity' features an array of fellow visionaries - Jimetta Rose, Masego, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Muhsinah, James Poyser, Stro Elliot, Rasheeda Ali, Farnell Newton, Kris Johnson, Magestik Legend –– who help deliver the message and further relay the essence of what the album stands for. IAMABEENIE is a name that denotes a series of jazz-Influenced albums 14KT is currently working on.

Just my thought, I expected more from JH, music-wise. I think the concept and the videos are excellent but the music is not as "great" as hyped by fans. I appreciate the chance to hear more JH's vocal and see him as a performer but somehow some songs sounds too repetitive to me. I expected something more "mature" for the title at least. Surprisingly I read a reddit comment that J is the least "juvenile" album among NCT solo. Can't help but disagree.
Hm, interesting. I don't listen to r'n'b, therefore, I don't know what is the current level of songs overall. It wasn't Jae who wrote the music, aside from Flamin' Hot Lemon all other records seem to be mostly by established composers who worked on many other songs for SM and for other famous Western artists.
From my side, I expected to not like Jae's album, actually. I don't like the kind of fluffy cheesy music he likes to recommend. Therefore, it was a relief he went soul and jazzy rout. Even if it was just a step in the "right direction". At least I can listen to 6 songs out of 7.
I agree that Jae's album is the most "juvenile" in a sense that he didn't have a clear vision and tried a lot of things. He doesn't know the genre yet, he is learning. I call his album a mixtape. The fans who say otherwise are probably just biased or don't like the genres the other soloists went for.
One of my friends gave me an idea of an artist warming up his audience to a new genre. Now I wonder if SM was careful as well. Wanting to keep Jae's heartthrob and loverboy image, chose the music easier to digest. I wrote this thought in the past, that "Smoke" is made of multiple various parts that might be more attractive to tiktok generation with their short-attention span.
