I had a plan to make one large post cataloging all the games from the holiday weekend, but I forgot to take pictures of yesterday's gaming. Oh well, words will have to do the work this time.
We spent Christmas eve with my parents. This year is a bit different for us. We're not able to see a lot of our family and it's starting to get to us. Thankfully the holidays are almost over with, so we can get back to pretending everything is normal.
After a tasty lunch of ham and all the fixings, we played a couple of games.
We started out with Truffle Shuffle. It's a quick, simple game where players try to make rummy style sets of cards and trade them in for the most points. Everyone seemed to really like this one.
We also played a couple rounds of Qwixx. It's one of our family's favorites. Dad closed off red early in the first round and shut everyone else out of a lot of points. We immediately decided to play another round. This one went much better for everyone.
Christmas was a quiet day for R. and me. We just played videos games, ate lots of food, and played one game of Cascadia.
I really like this game. It's relaxing. It's pleasant. And just feels cozy.
Yesterday was our regular gaming day. I failed take pictures. We played three games.
Sushi Go Party was first. I like that the game uses less cards, but also adds new food to the game. There's a few different things to change up the game a bit. I may have to get a copy of that one.
Next we played a new one for most of us. Mind Mgmt. It's a deduction game of hide and seek. We are definitely going to need to try it again.
Last, we played Cascadia. It was fun as always, but did seem to drag a bit with four players.
It was a pretty good holiday weekend. I'm glad it felt different from past years. I missed seeing everyone, but it was good to see who we did.
Next week I'll get some more pictures.

We've been away for a week now. And I am truly having the time of my life. All the fears I had before the trip have been proven wrong; I have not been sea sick and I am not freaking out because I am stuck on a boat. In fact I feel free. I really enjoy the work and I am handling the physical and shift part of it.
I've been up since midnight, for the 2nd day in a row. It's now just after 2 pm and I'm heading to bed. The last few days have been busy, and getting into the AM-shift routine.
We keep deploying drifters. But instead of letting them float for 12+ hours, we pick them up sooner, redeploy them and pick them up again. In between chasing drifters we measure the turbulence with an instrument that we literally yo-yo (that is the scientific term) off the ship into the depths of the ocean. It is a pretty boring job, as we just have to sit there and watch it; stop it when it's close to the ocean floor and wheel it back in. But I have introduced my shift buddies to Qwixx! Which is a little game that needs little enough attention to do when the instrument is getting wheeled back to the surface.
The last 24 hours we have worked on a different location near one of the canyons of the Cook Strait. Which is a 3 hour sailing from the location where we have been in the past week. We started sailing there yesterday just before sunrise and as the sun came up, we were able to spot more and more wildlife. First the birds; 100's of Albatrosses and other large sea birds and then came the 100's dolphins, common dolphins and the smaller Dusky dolphins, that were playing all around us, swimming in the waves created by the Tangaroa and further out they were jumping out of the water. It was a spectacular sight! The seals also showed up, they were mainly chilin' around the boat, floating in the sunshine and annoying the birds that were also drifting in the water.
I start to get to know the crew a bit better and they know where to find me when there's great stuff to see and take photos of! We even learned one of the deck crew how to play Qwixx in the early hours of the morning.
It still feels a bit weird, the AM-shifts. My alarm is set for 23:22. I don't think I have ever set an alarm for that time before. We have some simple breakfast before we start work and the real breakfast is served at 6:30 - eggs, bacon and sometimes even hashbrowns if we're lucky! Normally I can't handle such a rich brekkie in the morning, but it's kindoff lunch for us and most times we've opened our first package of chippies before that time. Actual lunch is served at 11:30, which is the main mean of the day as most people are awake at that time. The PM-shift takes over at noon. And the little bit of the afternoon that's left is spend by processing and plotting some data, relaxing (playing Qwixx, now that I got some people hooked onto that) and an early bedtime.
Today was a wonderful day, the ocean was super calm, almost flat! We were back closer to shore at our usual location. The sun was out, there was not much wind and we just relaxed out on the deck in the sunshine, overlooking the sounds of the South Island. I often realise at such moments how lucky we are that we get to work in these amazing places.

@nsv.de F* At the moment Qwixx is being played properly again. New are the two bonus blocks, which allow extra moves. Two very nice blocks, which increase the points. I like them. Boardgames in the News: What are "Roll and Write" Games?
Boardgames in the News: What are “Roll and Write” Games?
In the last few years, “Roll and Write” games have been everywhere, but what defines them and what let to the rise in their popularity? Well, their roots lie in simple dice games, which are as old as the hills, but arguably the first “Roll and Write” game is Yahtzee, a game that is now a childhood classic. Although the commercial game dates from the 1950s, the game is based on the older family…

my fave board game is definitely scattergories. i fucking love scattergories and i could probably play it all night. it's played in rounds so it can either be short or long!! same with qwixx, it's very fun and more dice/numbers, but also played in rounds
for longer ones, ive rly been liking mysterium and dixit!! i also managed to snag the chocolatier version of azul which is super fun once you get the hang of it (i also got briefly addicted to the knockoff phone game lmao)
#i luv word games so anomia is a staple#ransom notes is also v fun but takes quite a while to set up / complete rounds#if youre with a fun group then the blockbuster game is actually a rly good time lol#i remember liking skip-bo a lot and i ended up buying it but i completely forgot how to play so i dont touch it whoops#pls tell me ur fave board games!!! i always luv hearing abt new ones to try

http://geekandsundry.com/this-aint-your-mothers-yahtzee-five-essential-roll-write-games/
Who doesn’t love chucking dice? And who hasn’t thrown those six-sided cubes of fun during childhood games of Yahtzee? Most of us have played the classic game at one point in our lives, but quickly grew tired of its repetitive play and interminable wait between turns. Your copy probably met the...

#DiceStars is another roll-and-write game in the same vein as #Qwixx, #NochMal and #RollingAmerica. However, it's a notch more complex than those games. Despite having played this apparently innocuous little game 5 times, I’m still not quite sure what the optimal strategies are. The rules aren’t terribly complex, but the strategy is so subtle that it took a couple of plays for me to realize why some of the rules existed in the first place. In this game, you fill out a 5x4 grid by taking dice from the pool in the center. Each turn, the active player draws 1-3 dice from the bag and adds them to the pool. Then, they have 3 options: take ALL the dice of one color, take ALL dice of one value or take ALL dice showing stars. If you choose a color, you sum up the dice and put them in the appropriate column on your sheet. If you choose a value, you do the same, but fill in the appropriate row across your sheet. And if you take stars, you fill those into the 5 special rows on the sheet. Your final score is the sum of your 5 subtotals for each row. Each row also has an associated row for filling in stars. If you can fill up a star row, you get to DOUBLE your total for that row. However, if you fail to completely fill up a star row, that row scores you absolutely nothing, so there’s a fun and tense push-your-luck element to the game. You fill in a number of spaces depending on the number of dice you take, so taking the right dice to get your high rolls to meet up in the same row to then double with your star multiplier is a fun puzzle. Any dice you don’t take from the pool are then left for your opponents, so if you see they need 2 stars to fill in a row, but you leave them with 3, you force them to make a very tough decision on whether doubling a row is worth making another one potentially worthless. And since the game ends when someone fills up their sheet, you can control the pace of the game by taking lots of dice at once; potentially screwing someone out of finishing their very lucrative star rows. #DiceStars is a more pleasant way to fill 15-30 minutes that has more decision making than your average roll-and-write game and that's really hooked me. Recommended.

Und noch mal eben schnell zwischendurch: Qwixx on board vom @nsv.de Das Grundspiel mit einem beidseitigen Spielbrett. Dieses Mal sind die Würfel mit mir nicht hold. Au Backe. Fehlwurf jagt Fehlwurf.
