i am fascinated by horror based on the covid19 lockdowns. the month and a half that people really had to stay inside. and the idea that a year of your life was lost. i completely disagree. and it looks like spurrier feels the same (corona contrarium) but we'll have to wait and see. i could be projecting.
there's this quote that i cant find that goes something like, "just because the time didn't pass how i wanted it to doesn't mean it didn't pass at all." it's important to think about who we're talking about when we frame the lockdown as "the stolen year." it's very entitled. and it's always confused me. i think it's the idea that something was taken from you when tomorrow is never promised.
and the overwhelming fear that was prevalent in society during that time period is still here. it's just being channeled into other things. and i have to make it clear that we're still in a pandemic and it's the worst it's ever been. TB and measles outbreak on top of new covid strains??? what are we doing?? and no one wants to mask.
i would love to talk to spurrier about this. he's not American and different countries handled lockdowns very differently. anyway back to the comic.

One of the quotes complains about how more people are not working due to disability as if covid19 has nothing to do with making people disabled or making it deadly for more disabled people to work.
"We should still support the people who need it" Okay, then make an article about how they can't live off of what they get and are forced to live in poverty. Asshole
Hey friends, if I can ask for a moment of your time and ask you to sign this petition.
The Telegraph recently posted a horrifically ableist piece about chronically ill “influencers” (most people involved would consider themselves advocates), blaming chronically ill people for dropping employment numbers by “normalizing wokeness” and insinuating that visibly disabled and chronically ill people online are only doing so for monetary gain.
I’m not going to link to the article because I don’t want to give it any more views or clicks but you can feel free to look it up yourself. There are also excerpts from the article included in the above petition.
The journalist involved, Natasha Leake, intentionally lied to the influencers involved, claiming she supported what they were doing and wanted to raise awareness about their conditions. Needless to say what was printed was not supportive and the people involved are devastated.
And if you’re thinking this sounds like a rehash of something the BBC did a few years ago when they tried to pit disabled people against chronically ill people and made insinuations about “sickfluencers” being in it for the money, you’d be right.
Same old shit, different media outlet.
There has been a huge push back in media against chronically ill and disabled people over the last few years, in part because our governments are moving more toward fascism and they want you to feel apathy towards the neglect and suffering their policies cause. The media is a tool of this.
Please don’t let us be the only ones fighting back against it. No matter how healthy and abled you currently are, you are just one bad accident, one unexpected illness or fluke of genetics away from joining us.
Please spread and sign demanding that the Telegraph remove this defaming and ableist article and issue a public apology. Thank you 💖

Week 10: Wed Mar 26: DIGITAL DETOX EXPERIMENT & 2nd BOOK REVIEW DUE: How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell
1. DIGITAL DETOX Experiment: Leave your phone at home for one hour to take a walk in your neighborhood. Write down your observations when you return and draw a map of your path. (This is a hand drawn map, not a screenshot of Google or Apple Maps.)

2.  Afterwards, take a photo of your hand drawn map to include in your book review. What did you observe? Did you notice animals, trees, sounds and sights that you'd never seen before? Did the experience provide any revelations? Were you anxious, relieved, inspired? 
For my digital detox experiment, my boyfriend and I walked to our favorite coffee shop and sat on a bench in front of the nearby church. We drank our coffee in the sun. We do this every Sunday, but usually we drive. It is super close, but we usually grocery shop afterwards and need the car. I always look forward to it because there’s a beautiful blossom tree outside the church, with the bench right underneath it. It’s so nice to just sit back, people-watch, drink coffee, and feel the sun on your skin.
Walking there instead of driving definitely made it feel like a different journey, even though it was the same path. It was also weird not having my phone. Normally, I use this time to relax and spend quality time with my boyfriend, but I kept saying things and instinctively reaching for my phone to reference what I was talking about. It didn’t make me anxious, but it definitely highlighted how much of a habit it is.
I love this tradition, it always makes me feel refreshed and grounded after taking some time for myself.
2. What is your favorite quote from the book and why do you find it meaningful?
“The point of doing nothing, as I define it, isn’t to return to work refreshed and ready to be more productive, but rather to question what we currently perceive as productive.” 
I love this quote because it encapsulates a lot of ideas from Jenny O’Dell’s book and flips the perspective we have often been told. We are often encouraged to take a break from work in order to get more done. However, this quote emphasizes the importance of rest being for you. Taking a break for your own wellbeing is productive because we are humans and not machines. 
3. Why do you think this book, released by indie publishing house Melville Press, became an unexpected bestseller during the height of the Covid19 pandemic? Her book was so successful, she recently released a second title, Saving Time: Discovering a Life Beyond the Clock.
I think this book became an unexpected best seller during the height of the Covid19 pandemic because people were forced to slow down and weren’t sure how to. In today's world everything is so fast paced and we are constantly stimulated. During the pandemic, we had to confront our relationship with time and productivity. Jenny Odell’s book acts as a guide and action plan for stepping away from the constant stimulation that many of us needed during that desperate time. 
4. How does the attention economy benefit from our social media activity and media streaming consumption?
The attention economy profits from our online activity. Social media platforms and streaming services are designed to keep us engaged for as long as possible, using our behavior and preferences to create targeted advertising and drive revenue. With every interaction, we generate data that’s sold to advertisers, making our attention the real product. As more users join and engage, these platforms become even more valuable, deepening the cycle. 
5. How does this book relate to the topic of celebrity culture?
As I was reading the book and responding to this question, I couldn’t help but think about my capstone project for my interior design studio. I’m focusing on social media beauty influencers through the lens of overconsumption, lack of transparency, and authenticity. Influencers, like modern-day celebrities, have become central figures in the attention economy and digital culture, monetizing their appearance, lifestyle, and personal brand to keep us engaged. Through carefully curated content, they craft aspirational narratives that often blur the line between what’s real and what’s performative. This drives comparison, fuels unrealistic beauty standards, and encourages constant consumerism. Every post, like, and view becomes a transaction, not just for the influencer, but for the platforms profiting from our attention. 
6. Do you take digital detox breaks regularly? If yes, describe them. Were they more challenging during the quarantine era? Why?
I don’t usually go out of my way to take a full-on detox break, but there have definitely been times in my life when I’ve relied on Do Not Disturb mode. It helped me stop the habit of instantly checking every notification. During quarantine, screens were pretty much our only way to stay connected, so we were on them constantly. But after a while, it got really draining. These days, I try to be more intentional with how I spend time on screens. Social media especially can be such a drain—it’s like it sucks the energy out of you, and then suddenly you’ve spent hours scrolling because you don’t have the energy to do something more productive.
7. Do you sleep with your phone or computer? Are you aware of the impacts on your sleep cycles and relaxation caused by 24/7 proximity? Have you experimented with leaving digital devices in a drawer or another room? 
I do sleep with my phone next to me. I have heard it does impact your sleep but I haven’t done much of my own research into how harmful it is. I definitely want to get in the habit of charging it in another room. This will also force me to get up at the first alarm! I’ve noticed that when I check the time in the middle of the night, it’s way too easy to glance at my notifications, and before I know it, I’m scrolling on TikTok. Then I either don’t have enough time to fall back asleep or I just can’t, because the screen time totally wakes me up.
8. What does Odell mean by 'doing nothing?' Are we capable of doing nothing? 
It’s funny how we actually need a guide on how to “do nothing.�� In today’s world, we’re constantly overstimulated, and taking a step back can feel almost uncomfortable. When Odell talks about “doing nothing,” she’s really talking about resisting the pull of the attention economy and reclaiming your awareness. It’s about shifting your focus to the present moment—your surroundings, your thoughts, your inner world. I think we’re capable of it, but it definitely takes effort. Our culture has trained us to always be doing, watching, or consuming something. But doing nothing can be a powerful way to push back and give yourself a moment to just be.
9. What is the role of nature in Odell's book, in particular the role of birds? (P.S. Did you know that birdwatching became a HUGE pastime in the Covid era?)
Nature plays an important role in Odell’s philosophy. In particular, she references birds because they are symbols of presence, observation, and slowness. Watching them is a way to reconnect with the world around us. The reminder that we are part of a larger, living world can be healing. This is why birdwatching became popular during covid, it is a simple way to ground yourself.

2. It was quite cathartic to sit in the park for an hour without my phone. It gave me the opportunity to live in the present which is something we often take for granted with our reliance on our phones. This gave me the opportunity to slow down with time, something that was so common in my childhood prior to having a phone. For the first couple of minutes, I did feel anxious because there were a few people around me also sitting on benches but glued to their phones and instinctively I’d do the same if I’d taken my phone. As time passed, everything was very calming. I found myself in a meditative state completely taking in what the outdoors had to offer. Simply spending more time outdoors is healing physically and mentally. This has inspired me to sit in public spaces by myself more often to fully cherish the environment for what it is, especially being in the heart of NYC!

3. My favorite quote from the book is, “Sometimes it’s good to be stuck in the in-between, even if it’s uncomfortable.” Many of Odell’s reflections within the book are because she’s been exposed to uncomfortable states of the in between with the childhood nostalgia she adores that’s also contributed to the attention economy and having a biracial background. We may not realize it in the moment but whenever we feel stuck, we’re left with our own thoughts and experiences. We choose how to respond to that the same way we respond to the beauty of the natural world we inhabit.
4. The height of the Covid19 pandemic brought upon a lot of success for people across so many industries that would’ve never gotten the same opportunities had timing been different. While timing assisted a lot, the success of Odell’s book speaks to the content within it and the authenticity that Odell brings. Her own perspective and analysis of the social climate both digitally and environmentally in real life are profound and relevant to almost everyone today. It especially helped that this topic seemed extremely relevant during the height of the pandemic as people were longing for the outdoors. There’s also a bold attitude and confidence Odell brings within her writing that clearly gets across what she stands for. It speaks volumes that the book was published through an indie publishing house rather than a corporate one, again tying back to her authenticity and what she’s speaking about. The book being a best seller is inspiring in the sense that people recognize that voices outside of those within major corporations can also be heard. 
5. The attention economy benefits from our social media activity and streaming consumption because they’re more quick and efficient than ever. Social media is how news spreads quickest and the reliance that’s been created from being in the know is something that’s been made to seem as valuable as possible to everyone. The goal is for corporations to keep us engaged as much as possible and essentially never leave the cycle. This is proven through algorithms, especially Tiktok which has become so prevalent in culture especially among the youth since the pandemic. There’s the term “doom scrolling” which keeps people constantly scrolling without realizing the passage of time. It’s gotten so bad that when Tiktok was banned in the US for less than a day back in January, there was mass hysteria and so many close friends of mine posted to other social media platforms about their frustration/panic. I’d even say that the uproar in popularity surrounding AI also plays into the attention economy. By garnering specifically to what we want, they keep us in this loop that’s incredibly difficult to get away from. Especially when it’s so heavily integrated into our personal and work lives. It’s so important that we continue having conversations about this.

6. The book relates to celebrity culture through its relation to the attention economy. Odell mentions the cult of individuality and personal branding which affects how we view ourselves offline and the environment around us. This ties to the idealized image of celebrities and the display of perfection that doesn’t always align with our real everyday lives. Constantly seeing these idealized glimpses into the lives of everyone around us puts us in a negative state where we compare our lives to others despite not knowing the truth. It’s the manipulation from the attention economy that manufactures this cycle to keep us constantly wanting to see these glimpses and perform ourselves to fit into the status quo.
7. I don’t take digital detox breaks regularly in my free time but I am good at fully immersing myself in classes without looking at my phone. It kind of weirds me out just how consumed we are with our phones. Sometimes when riding the subway you see full train cars with everyone on their phone and part of that feels dystopian, even in classes when classmates stare at their phones. Though I also participate in this trend, I find myself choosing to observe my surroundings more often which gives me more perspective to how I view everyone around me. During the quarantine era, digital detox breaks were more difficult because practically everything socially required staring at a screen. Keeping in touch with school friends, classes, family members, etc. Although I do feel the quarantine era was a time where personal growth came quicker simply by having more time to sit with ourselves and reflect.
8. I do sleep with my phone beside me at night. It’s something I’m not proud of but something I’ve gotten so used to since I’ve had a phone. Many people, including myself, position their beds to be near an outlet so it’s easy to plug in the electronic device near their bed. I haven’t looked too deeply into how sleep cycles are affected by 24/7 proximity but I’m willing to look into it considering I’m aware of the negative impact that sleeping by my phone has. I haven’t left my phone in a drawer or another room, most often just on my nightstand. I will say that I’m motivated now more than ever to start implementing barriers between my phone and I to see the good results reflected in my health.

9. When Odell mentions ‘doing nothing’ she states, “From either a social or ecological perspective, the ultimate goal of “doing nothing” is to wrest our focus from the attention economy and replant it in the public, physical realm.” Essentially, Odell is challenging the attention economy for how it’s taking advantage of everyone and leaving them in a constant state of anxiety, envy, and distraction. In this context, doing nothing isn’t referring to taking a break and going back to expectations of productivity, rather questioning how we perceive productivity in general. She’s also not against technology and acknowledges that it can be used to help us be more in touch with the present. 
Being capable of doing nothing is possible, it’s just increasingly becoming harder to see due to the constraints of how the attention economy uses technology to persuade us and affect our behavior. Being so consumed with the addictive features of technology has prevented us from truly living in the moment and looking into ourselves deeper, along with the environment that surrounds us. Odell’s own personal reflection of her life and bringing in where he grew up (San Francisco Bay Area) and how she’s responded to the environment answers the question of being capable of doing nothing and rejecting the capitalist standards she mentions. She’s encouraging everyone to freely embrace where we are and believe that we’re capable.

In Odell’s book, the role of nature is described as being intertwined with how we interact/respond to it. It’’s stated, “Dissolving the nature/culture distinction, Purdy suggests that in the Anthropocene, we should figure nature not as separate, but as a partner in
collaboration.”  Specifically with birds, Odell brings up the awareness of behavior in the natural environment and how you pick up on patterns the more you’re exposed to them, which is also exhibited in social behavior. Bird-watching is an activity where you learn to notice what happens around you, which contrasts the addictive habits of overconsumption with the digital world. Her fascination with birdwatching and their behavior speaks to how much she cares about fully immersing herself in the unpredictable state of nature. 
I was also unaware that birdwatching became so huge during the Covid era. It’s honestly an activity I'm interested in partaking in because there’s something so blissful about it. It’s funny because I remember categorizing bird watching as a boring activity when I was a kid because tv shows would portray the act of birdwatching as a running joke, making fun of it. Birdwatching in general seems much more nuanced and intriguing to me now, especially after reading Odell’s interest in birds.

To be completely honest, I do a one hour minimum walk EVERY SINGLE DAY to simply disconnect from the game of life and find space to breathe and be alone with my own thoughts... Getting to do this for an assignment was simply refreshing and natural. Because of my extensive walk history in my area (home away from home while I am working on an acting contract), I didn't necessarily see anything I hadn't seen before; I did however notice some beautiful birds (ducks, irises, and geese), a gorgeous sunset, and most importantly I noticed how at PEACE I felt.

“Our very idea of productivity is premised on the idea of producing something new, whereas we do not tend to see maintenance and care as productive in the same way.”
This quote really resonates with me because as an artist this is truer than ever, in an economy where creation is the mere basis of not only our livelihood but "success". It isn't spoken about enough how productivity can look more internalized than what's usually expected.

During COVID times, society's idea of productivity kind of got turned on its side as people found themselves unable to go about their normal routines; the idea of comfort also became more individualized and niche because everyone was seemingly doing the same thing: everything but NOTHING. I think this book became an unexpected bestseller because honestly people definitely had more time to read as it is, but also I think there was a spiked interest in self-care and mental health during the pandemic. 6. Do you take digital detox breaks regularly? If yes, describe them. Were they more challenging during the quarantine era? Why?
I take one every single day, and they are my "escapes" even though in reality these moments end up being where I feel most present and comfortable with myself, so often times I just look at it as a necessity. I have to admit, during the quarantine era it was slightly more difficult to truly disconnect from the digital world when again, that was singlehandedly the way information was shared and seemingly all I COULD do was open my laptop or scroll on my phone for example.
7. Do you sleep with your phone or computer? Are you aware of the impacts on your sleep cycles and relaxation caused by 24/7 proximity? Have you experimented with leaving digital devices in a drawer or another room?
When I am on my own schedule I tend to fall asleep with my devices kind of carelessly to be honest. I have frequently fallen asleep with headphones on for example, connected to either my MacBook or my iPhone and haven't given much thought to it. It doesn't seem to affect my sleep cycle or relaxation as I actually have a form of codependency with music, leading to using electronics as my form of intaking as much music as possible. I could even argue I feel more at peace with my phone playing a random playlist vs. silence in the air. But I have experimented with leaving my digital devices say in the kitchen or something in a past relationship of mine... This habit lead to more one on one focused time with my partner which was the goal.
8. What does Odell mean by 'doing nothing?' Are we capable of doing nothing? 
Odell defines "doing nothing" as avoiding the constant need to feed into the attention economy and instead focusing one's time and energy on what they need as an individual. I think it is extremely hard to convince certain types of people in this day and age to truly do "doing nothing" justice, as many many people actually revolve around consumer culture, so as a whole I am not sure if "we" are capable of doing nothing if that makes sense.
9. What is the role of nature in Odell's book, in particular the role of birds? (P.S. Did you know that birdwatching became a HUGE pastime in the Covid era?)
Odell genuinely shares the same appreciation and love for nature as I do as a human being. She and I see beauty in the simplest of forms such as grass, trees, bodies of water; And we both see birds as symbols of freedom and easygoing.

DIGITAL DETOX Experiment:
As I walked along the familiar streets, I noticed intricate details in the architecture of houses, vibrant colors in the flowers blooming in gardens that I hadn’t seen in the past. Without the distraction of notifications and updates, my senses felt heightened, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the sights, sounds, and smells of my surroundings. I felt the gentle breeze rustling through the leaves of trees, heard the sounds of children laughing and enjoyed the sights of dogs getting their morning walk. SImple things that I had previously overlooked in my rush to stay connected online.
The experience provided me with a sense of peace as I noticed beauty that exists in the simple moments of everyday life. I felt more connected to nature and a deeper appreciation for the beauty that surrounds me in that hour. This experiment reminded  me of the importance of slowing down, disconnecting from technology, and embracing the present moment. I returned home feeling refreshed  and eager to incorporate more moments of digital detox into my daily routine. The hand-drawn map I created serves as a visual reminder of the insights gained during my hour-long experience of unplugging and reconnecting with the world around me.

No honestly, I do not take digital detox breaks unless I am at work where I am not allowed to have my phone on the floor. During quarantine my screen time increased by a landslide. With limited opportunities for activities and social interactions, I found myself turning to my devices more frequently for entertainment and connection. The constant stream of news updates and social media content became almost addictive, making it difficult to disconnect and take breaks. As a result, my screen time skyrocketed, and I struggled to find a healthy balance between online and offline activities. However, I'm aware of the importance of disconnecting periodically to maintain my mental well-being, and I'm actively working on finding strategies to incorporate more offline time into my daily routine.

Unfortunately yes I do sleep  with my phone. I like to have it close as not only is it my alarm clock but it is also what I need on hand to be able to pick up last minute shifts for work. Though I do make the mistake of also starting my morning with scrolling through social media. The constant proximity to digital devices does disrupt my sleep cycles, making it harder for me to unwind and fall asleep peacefully. I've tried leaving my phone in another room or on my desk before bedtime, but I often feel anxious about missing important notifications or calls. Finding a balance between staying connected and prioritizing rest is something I'm actively working on to promote better sleep habits.
