  He had all the ingredients, but the actual recipe was escaping his memory, so searched on a laptop and found one online instead. It seemed close enough to what he wanted.

 “Okay, just gotta follow the steps and do everything slowly,” He read the first line of instructions and set to work, already feeling confident. “As long as I follow the recipe, how hard could it be?”

 He was wrong. So very, very, wrong.

 Three bowls in the sink, a handful of vegetables and two plates of charred chicken later with his sleeve rolled up, Shiro was sweating up a storm. He wanted to curse the person who uploaded this recipe. He was following it precisely, so why was he still messing it all up?

 The Galaxy Garrison’s finest. Can’t even cook vegetables without somehow setting them on fire. Shiro grimaced, rubbing his temple with his robot hand.

 After composing himself, he grabbed his failed dish, and tossed it off into the trash can that was starting to smell a lot more burnt and bitter by the second. It was a miracle he hadn’t set off any alarms yet or he’d be in real trouble.

My preview pieces for the Quizsnacks Voltron Cookbook/Zine !

...  “There is nothing to thank,” she says and he is suddenly aware of the age she carries, “We’re doing what we can, what we should. You and them..” she looks to the closed bay door, “No one deserves that.”

He nods and shudders, still thankful, but understanding the weariness in her voice.

The android like being is back and adding a dark hunter green scarf to his blanket cocoon, “Your readings are far below what seems healthy, but I am unable to determine if your species runs that low as a default. Are you too cold?”

He nods, and the leader huffs out a laugh before standing and lightly patting his shoulder.

The others seem to take it as a cue to get on with business, and talk amongst themselves again.

“This is the safest place for such a high profile prisoner…”

“Safe? We are in the middle of an expanding nebula! Aladi, you cannot tell me this is safe.”

“Exactly, Khaete, it’s perfect.”

... 

At the end of the month, every month, for years… Keith would wake up and jump out of bed with all the joy and mirth a child could ever need. His father would already be up and at em, toiling away in the garden behind the house.

They had an extensive herb collection close to the backdoor and fresh tomato plots on either side of the gravel walk. They would spend all morning outside collecting the vegetables for the big cast iron pot his dad set out over a wood burning fire.

They traded fresh veggies and salted jerky with a neighbor a good few miles away- in return they got fresh milk and beans and the harder to get fruits.But most importantly of all was the freshly butchered steak. Simple bartering that Keith was always excited to hop into the truck for.

With the zine's completion now announced I get to upload my pieces for Quizsnacks!! Our Voltron Cookbook that got finished just a little bit ago with deliveries. Working on the zine was an absolute pleasure, and I'm SUPER FREAKING HAPPY that I get whole book of recipes to try, and to have been given an opportunity to put not one but TWO pieces into a book!!!

So with that, and a hearty thank you to the mods-- Here's my first piece! Based on the Chili recipe in the book, Keith and his Chili, featuring some gentle family bonding of both past and present.

The guards bring the prisoners to the canteen only twice a quintant. That's a rough approximation of a day, slightly longer—at least according to the neurotic measuring of the time Matt's taken up since arriving here. There isn't much else to do to distract himself from the despair—or the hunger. Even from the Kerberos mission, he isn't used to such sparse rations, and the “food” here is hardly that.

Still, mess is the one thing he has to—well, not exactly “look forward to,” but he doesn't have to dread it, either. It's the only time that the prisoners are free to socialize and that he can see Shiro, the last tether he has to home. Shiro might just be his last tether to his sanity, too, if he's being honest.
