Final Space thoughts

So just finished Final Space (it was amazing, everyone go watch it) and I much like most of the audience didn't like Quinn and Gary together but I want to put into words my own reasoning as to why.

When we first meet Quinn, Gary is his weird self and I do agree that Quinn was reasonable in her reaction like "who the fuck are you, I don't know you please fuck off". But slowly Gary calmed the fuck down and he began to separate Quinn from her idealized version in his head and who she actually was, but Quinn never let go of her fuck off mentality. Granted her entire world view was going up in flames but still, not the basis of a relationship.

The first really point I could go "you know what they might be cute together" was after Quinn closed the gate in final space. The thing is, she's gone for all of season 2 and end of season 1. While Gary and the others are getting development, Quinn is locked in stasis. Now here's where Nightfall comes in.

All of the character development we see in Quinn is through Nightfall who is her own character. Nightfall brings out what I believe the main challenge of the entire show.

They were meant to be together, but never meant to be

All the characters at some point have to deal with their own version of this philosophy. However what I think the show does beautifully is that all of the characters prove Nightfall wrong. That it's not a matter of being meant to be together, but choosing their own destiny. Gary chooses to accept his mom back into his life, he chooses to forgive Avocato and make him his best friend, he chooses to be Little Cato's other dad, etc.

You know who doesn't do this? Our Quinn.

Once Season 3 starts, it's like only one part of her is in the same stage of development as the rest of the cast and that is her love for Gary. But she is still as self-serving and more focused on her goals over the safety of her crew.

She doesn't warn them of Final Space poison or her hallucinations. She can't give Ash the comfort she needs like Nightfall could. (Yes they are different characters and pretty much everyone leaves Ash's state in the hands of Little Cato and sometimes Sheryl but still). And most evidently, she would not have tried as hard to get Gary back. which is confirmed when Zombie Gary asks if she would after seeing how our Gary went back for Quinn.

The two of them (Quinn and Gary) are destined by the narrative and the universe to be together, but they don't choose to be. These versions of them, our versions of them aren't meant to be. and it feels like a disservice to both characters and the message of the show to smash them together anyway.
