Since they're coming after marriage equality in the US, I know a lot of people are questioning if they need to get married while they still can. I just want everyone to know that you don't have to choose between eloping and having a beautiful ceremony of your dreams. You can do both, separately. My spouse and I had to get married for insurance purposes right after I finished grad school, so it would have been horrible timing to plan a wedding. We got courthouse married, and then about a year later we had the most beautiful wedding. Already having the legal document did not take one bit of specialness away from that day. Treating the marriage certificate as a legal document, not overly celebrating the courthouse wedding, and limiting who we even told about it was advice I got from another friend who did the same thing. I know having someone tell me that they did it and it didn't ruin their wedding helped me feel way better to do it, which is why I wanted to share my experience. Unless things go absolute worst case scenario, they aren't going to be able to stop you from having a big party about how much you love each other. It's also highly unlikely they will be able to nullify existing marriage certificates. Please don't rush into a marriage you're not 100% ready for, but if you are ready, get married now, have a wedding later.

@gentlethemme is in a white suit, pants, and vest, with a flowery scarf and pink boots with green velvet laces. Their brown hair is wavy and cut into a glorious mullet and they have red framed glasses and a septum ring with a pink gem. Their smile lights up the entire room and their pink beaded heart earrings match their soul. A black cane helps keep them balanced while they walk.

My outfit was mostly green with a dark lace long sleeve shirt and pale dress pants with dark brown buttons. There's also a bustle skirt with a long train with black, and white lace and various shades and textures of fabric on every layer. My hair is half green and half brown, short on the sides and long and curly arranged down the back of my head. There are pink flower petals on the right side of my head along a squiggly green line. My cane has a colourful paisley pattern on it and I have a green mask with gold stars on it hanging around my neck by a green and black chain that fits in with the other necklaces I have layered over my chest and the green and black dangly earrings hanging from my ears.

On Lughnasa (August 1st), 2023, under a full moon in Aquarius, my partner and I got married in a handfasting ceremony.

We designed this ceremony from scratch ourselves, incorporating elements from our own faiths. My personal practice is a mix of Heathenry and Reclaiming (and, ngl, is heavily influenced by Wicca) and my now-husband is Roman pagan. We also both have Irish American heritage that is important to our families, which is why we chose to incorporate historic Irish elements.

And our boyfriend was our officiant!
