You’re one of my go-to queer lds blogs and I was wondering if you knew some clear indications I can give to other queer members about being queer. I don’t want to be too obvious to non-supporters tho. Any thoughts?
off the top of my head:
most cishet people don't know individual orientations' pride flags, only that the rainbow is the general LGBTQ symbol. cishet allies, if they know anything beyond the rainbow, usually only know a few other flags - the bisexual and transgender flags, usually. other queer people will recognize accessories or clothes with specific flag flag color palettes like nonbinary/lesbian/aro/etc. and most likely will not tip off any homophobes.
you can find a lot of queer fashion and accessories that incorporate pride flag color schemes in subtle ways so that it doesn't look like a flag. look up "subtle [identity] pride design" to find stuff like this. other queer people will see it while cishet people usually will not.
breaking dress conventions is a subtle way to signal queerness. if you're afab, wearing pants/suits to church will tick people's gaydar; if you're amab, wearing something colorful instead of the standard white/gray/black/brown/blue stuff will do it.

Hey, for anyone in Utah or were/are LDS and are having a hard time reconciling your identity with your spiritual beliefs, especially as it pertains to free agency, I want to let you know that one of Brigham Young's (second prophet of the lds church) son was a drag performer who was loved by his community:
Tumblr media
B. Morris Young performed at church events under the name Madam Pattirini.
This isn't me saying anything pro-church (I have a lot of issues with it that I doubt I'll ever fully work out), but learning about some actually nice buried church history was a good experience. I wanted to share.

So far, chances of KOSA being enacted is 31% according to the site linked below.
Tumblr media
Let's get that fucker down to zero, guys!!
Stuff to help us do that is linked here!
The call scripts linked below were originally for Congressional representatives, but now that the bill is in committee consideration by Senate Commerce, you should call your Senators instead and you can use the scripts for them. Also, when calling your Democrat senators, make sure to add that Senator Blackburn explicitly stated in interview that it would be used to "protect children from the transgender." I think it's pretty clear that this is not meant to protect children. It's just going to harm children further, especially trans children.
(Article below with a video of the interview embedded.)
Please help stop this bill in its tracks. Reblog, donate, call your senators, and keep an eye on the bill's chances of being passed. We can't stop now. 31% is still kind of a big number. We need to shrink those chances by a lot more.

hey! hope this isn’t offensive, but i was wondering what it’s like to be NB and bi in the Mormon church. Are you out? Does your community respect your identity? I’ve heard about Mormons sometimes being pretty bigoted so I was curious what that’s like for you.
Hey buddy!
Thanks for the question, definitely not offensive but boy howdy is this a complicated question to answer.
So, I've been out as bi since 2016, and out as nonbinary since 2020. I served a mission for my church and was very open about being bi the whole time, and I attended BYU (a religious LDS university) as a nonbinary person.
I wouldn't say either one was easy, but there were a lot of really cool people I met who made it easier.
I have had bishops who were very understanding, one in particular was a trained therapist and was well informed about queer issues, and hopes that gay marriage will be allowed in the temple one day. I had a lovely ministering sister (kinda like assigned friends???), an older lady who took me under her wing and watched queer eye with me and listened to me when I had to cry or vent about homophobia in the religion as a whole.
I gave a talk in sacrament meeting (in front of an apostle!?!!!!) where I talked about being queer and the pain I feel because of unfair church policies and I was hearing from people for months how touching and meaningful my talk was.
There was a lovely family who hosted gatherings once a month for queer latter-day saints to meet and find community and belonging. I'm now part of a small group of trans Mormons who meet up every other week to have our own Sunday school. There are so many queer Mormons on this website who have given me support and community when I've needed it. I'm part of an leftist organization called Mormons With Hope for a Better World, and many of the members are queer in some way.
I guess in conclusion: yeah, as an institution the LDS church is homophobic and transphobic and they keep instituting policies that aim to keep it that way. But there are many many individuals who are fighting for change, some in little ways and others loudly. There are many people who are willing to learn and be inclusive they just don't know where to start. I love my religion and I want to practice it in community. I know it's not everyone's fight, but for me it's worth it to keep pushing back and carving out spaces for queer Mormons. I won't let the cishets forget I exist. I have just as much right to sit in the pews on Sunday as they do.

The Parable of the Grateful Cat - James E. Talmage
Mr. Romanes, in the course of his customary daily walk, came to a millpond. At the edge of the water he saw two boys with a basket. They were obviously engaged in a diverting occupation. As he came up to them, Mr. Romanes observed that the youths were well dressed and evidently somewhat refined and cultured. Inquiry elicited the fact that they were upper servants in a family of wealth and social quality. In the basket were three whining kittens; two others were drowning in the pond; and the mother cat was running about on the bank, rampant in her distress.
To the naturalist’s inquiry the boys responded with a straightforward statement, respectfully addressed. They said their mistress had instructed them to drown the kittens, as she wanted no other cat than the old one about the house. The mother cat, as the boys explained, was the lady’s particular pet. Mr. Romanes assured the boys that he was a personal friend of their employer, and that he would be responsible for any apparent dereliction in their obedience to the orders of their mistress. He gave the boys a shilling apiece, and took the three living kittens in charge. The two in the pond had already sunk to their doom.
The mother cat evinced more than the measure of intelligence usually attributed to the animal world. She recognized the man as the deliverer of her three children, who but for him would have been drowned. As he carried the kittens she trotted along-sometimes following, sometimes alongside, occasionally rubbing against him with grateful yet mournful purrs. At his home Mr. Romanes provided the kittens with comfortable quarters, and left the mother cat in joyful content. She seemed to have forgotten the death of the two in her joy over the rescue of the three.
idk about all y'all but I'm reading this as the church being hostile to queer people and Jesus picking us up to save us from the harm that the doctrine causes

Sometimes people wonder why I continue to have anything to do with the LDS church, let alone be an active member.
At least one reason is that our Heavenly Parents keep sending queer kids to LDS homes, and those queer kids need someone to tell them they are fully known, deeply loved and eternally valued members of our Heavenly Family. Without exception.

my go at a takatāpui flag!! <3 <3 <3 <3
takatāpui is a te reo māori term that traditionally means "intimate partner of the same sex" but has in modern times been reclaimed by queer māoris of various identities. before colonization it was totally normal and accepted for māori people to have partners of the same sex or to transition their gender; british colonization brought homophobia and transphobia along with suppression of many other aspects of māori culture. in the 1980s, māori members of the lgbtq+ community started using the term takatāpui to mean queer/lgbtq+
I only recently found out about this term and already it means a lot to me... I didn't grow up in aotearoa and there are literally no māori people where I live so it's hard sometimes to feel connected w my heritage. and also I live in a conservative area and my family is christian as hell so it can be hard to feel connected to the lgbtq+ community too. which is to say, I'm glad to now have the word takatāpui connecting me to my queer māori whānau <3 <3
there is no official takatāpui flag, but I came up w this one, combining the rainbow flag and trans flag w the māori flag. if ur takatāpui hmu lets be friends!!! and if u use my flag pls tag me <3

GET KOSA TRENDING.
STOP SCROLLING NOW!
AS OF FEBRUARY 21ST, 2024, WE GOT FIVE DAYS UNTIL THE DAY OF DECISION OF THE KOSA BILL, WHICH WILL CAUSE MASS CENSORSHIP ROUND THE INTERNET IF PASSED. OR DOOMSDAY. WE NEED EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS AND CONTRIBUTE. I'M NOT GIVING UP ON YOU ALL.
WE'RE DOWN TO THE WIRE BUT WE CAN'T GIVE UP YET. IF WE GIVE UP, EVERYTHING IS OVER. IF WE DON'T, AT LEAST WE HAVE A CHANCE.
I'M THE ONE WHO SOUNDED THE ALARM, AND I'M NOT GOING TO CURL UP AND DIE YET.
Reblog this post in every LEGAL way you can under the Tumblr guidelines with the appropriate tags. TELL AND TAG EVERYONE YOU KNOW, then add the tags to see below... and more if you can think of any complying.
Visit badinternetbills.com if you want to find a way to defeat KOSA. It WILL NOT take much of your time. Reblog with any other information or sources, too-- but make sure to reblog if you can.
Reblog if you support lgbtq+ content.
Reblog if you support questioning queer youth and/or abused youth getting the information they need.
Reblog if you support Ao3 and/or other sites that wholeheartedly preserve talentedly made media.
Reblog if you're going to repost this on other sites than Tumblr and spread the word across Twitter, Tik Tok, Pinterest, or elsewhere, alongside the link to badinternetbills.com.

Hey, everyone. So yeah, this is happening. We're still fighting this battle. And we can't give up now. We can't. We can't stand idly by while one of the most important resources that helped us all wake up, or at least start to question things, is being threatened by the government.
We can't stand idly by when kids, teens, and adults just like us still trapped inside might lose access to the resource that could help them wake up. We can't stand idly by when they might lose access to their non JW friends and family. We CAN'T stand idly by when we can do something to stop this bill from passing.
I am sick and tired of this same old song, where conservative fuckers higher up think they can oppress everyone. I am FUCKING SICK of it.
Please, reblog both this post and the original post linked above what I've written, and do what you can to stop KOSA, please. We are running out of time.
I suggest that if it is within your power to do so, that you do more than simply reblog and assume someone else will do something. DON'T assume that. Please do more than just reblogging if you are able to, because that's not really enough at this point.
Call/email representatives in the House and tell them to oppose KOSA (you may want to list different reasons depending on who you're calling, some House representatives are anti-LGBTQ+, so it may be best to tell them to oppose because it violates people's privacy, safety, and anonymity online). Print posters and put them up where legal if you can.
Sharing all this information to other social media sites (Instagram, Reddit, TikTok, the bird app) to reach more people can really help too. The wider the reach, the better.
Thank you. Now let's fucking rip that bill apart like we rip apart Watchtower magazines and eat it for fucking breakfast. (In a "we're eating it and the politicians who are sponsoring it are looking on in horror" kind of way)

I woke up at 4:30 this morning filled with existential dread.
I'm sure everyone can imagine why. I don't know if I've ever felt this hopeless about America. Angry, sure. Disappointed, lots. But I always had this hope that the better angels of our nature would triumph in the end.
I'm not hopeful anymore.
But here's a warning to all of my fellow Latter Day Saints, especially the ones who will never see this--our shared Christianity isn't going to save us. If the Christian Nationalists get their way and it comes down to an Us vs. Them scenario, we Mormons will always be classified as "Them."
For the past couple decades, LDS leadership has tried to strengthen ties with our fellow Christian religionists, which is a nice thought, while doubling down on Conservative Christian policies and culture war propaganda. It seems that leadership is trying to fit in, make us all snug and cozy with the Evangelicals and other right-wing Christians.
But let me tell you, none of that is going to keep us safe. They will never accept us as one of them. At the end of the day, regardless of our Christ-centered doctrine and our faith, they don't think we're Christian at all.
In the Us vs. Them equation we will always lose.
Stay safe out there my fellow Mormons, my siblings in Christ. Community is the only thing that might get us through.

Thank you to the non-LDS folk who let me talk to them about the LDS religion and share the gospel. I will not be able to go on a mission in the near future due to my transness. But I have such a strong testimony in the church and want to share that with others. Thank you for listening to me. Asking questions. I love the questions, and I love researching them to help you. I genuinely love teaching others. I just talked to someone about the Nephites & who they were. I know it is just a peak of interest to them, but for me it is an opportunity to teach. To be like my savior. I know that to them it is so minuscule. To me, I get to serve like my older sister, even if it is in different ways. Thank you.

seeing everything about the secret lives of mormon wives is so weird to me because
1. I didn’t grow up in Utah so some of the more cultural vs. doctrinal societal norms weren’t really prevalent
2. I have very chill parents who love the religion but also know that the church institution itself is fallible and religion/practice are personal above all else
so it feels almost alien??? Like I grew up in the church, and even though I’m pagan now I still enjoy going to church with family when I’m in town and I feel up to it. I have ties there. I love a lot of the people in the ward I grew up in.
it feels like this show is talking about something I’m barely even familiar with. Idk. It’s also frustrating because I really want someone from outside of the church to take us seriously enough to do an actual deep dive into the cosmology/culture/structure and general history of the church without affirming or outright condemning all of it. There’s so much nuance in people’s relationships with church and it makes me kinda sad that we never get that.
idk I maybe need to start incorporating some Mormon characters with actual nuance into writing projects ‘cause… I’m sad sometimes lol
(also if I have to explain one more time to someone that an institution can be bad/have serious flaws without being a cult I’m going to lose it. SOME BRANCHES OF THE CHURCH FIT THE BITE MODEL. SOME DO NOT. STOP USING CULT AS A BUZZWORD. I grew up with people saying Mormonism was a cult. I also know someone who was raised in an actual cult, and trust me, the cultish-ness of lds religious practice is based on a wide variety of factors and where you live. I personally think it’s pretty rude to just tell someone you barely know that they’re in a cult with no research or sensitivity around it.)
