By Melinda Butterfield
Thousands of people flooded the streets of lower Manhattan on Pride Sunday, June 25, for the fifth annual Queer Liberation March. This year’s theme was “Trans and Queer, Forever Here,” in defiance of the more than 500 anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ+ bills and growing street violence targeting the community coast-to-coast.

At a 1973 Gay Pride Rally, a group of trans individuals led by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson were not allowed to march in the parade, claiming they gave the thing a "bad reputation." They marched in front of the parade in protest.
Later, Sylvia got up, faced down a wall of boos and jeers, and gave one of the most powerful and iconic speeches of the queer liberation movement. She was still faced down with hatred and a hostile crowd, and would go home to attempt suicide, only to be saved by Marsha. She would then leave activism for another twenty years.
This is important because it shows this call for "purity" and "respectability" has always been an ugly part of gay rights, along with so-called "feminists" who take on the right-wing fundamentalist view that gender is immutable. It marginalizes trans and gender non-conforming people, sex workers, homeless queer people, and queer people of color, and favors the White and middle-class.
Drag is a part of pride. Kink is a part of pride. Trans people deserve to live their lives on their own terms. People who demand queer respectability and queer assimilation were wrong in the past and continue to be wrong today.

NYC queer org politics ahead !
Dyke March NYC who’s march theme today will be “dykes against genocide” is being attacked for not being anti Zionist enough on insta because they released and quickly deleted a statement accidentally released without full consensus by the organizers saying that they’re anti Zionist and Pro-Palestinian liberation but also want to assure Jewish community members that they are safe and that we mourn all civilian lives lost and that was enough for the most rabid (mostly white) “leftists antizionists” to turn on this historic dyke led grassroots volunteer protest march.
I want people to understand Dyke March NYC isn’t an “official” organization. There’s no office. It isn’t run by rich donors. It’s entirely volunteer run. And it’s run mostly by poor dykes of color and disabled dykes and dykes who are on the margin in this city. They are putting their own time and money and labor to put together a march that is usually 8,000+ people and provide free water and wheelchairs and taxis for those who need help to get there. And they’re the ones who put their bodies on the line as marshals when we take the streets. Because when the march happens every year, they are the ones who block off traffic for us to march. And right now they are being attacked by people who are saying they are too “institutional” but who refuse to put in their own time to change what they want changed. I doubt most of them were even going to come to the march in the first place.
And going back to the statement. They deleted it because the statement was put out without full consensus, and they wanted to write a more detailed statement in support of Palestinian liberation while also assuring Jewish community members that they are safe. Because the march organizers received many emails from Jewish members who are pro Palestinian asking if they would be safe from antisemitism at the march. But according to the purity politics happening online, Jewish dykes feelings of safety doesn’t matter and also aren’t “real”. And you can’t be truly anti Zionist and feel empathy for civilian lives lost on Oct 7. And if you do you’re actually pro-Zionism and anti Palestinian liberation and should be hunted down by Instagram activists who are currently posting “who are the Zionists infiltrating the organizers?” While trying to hunt down whoever wrote the statement for being a “secret Zionist”. A statement put together by anti Zionist volunteer organizers is hiding a secret pro genocide message because they dared to mention they care about the safety of the Jewish community members who will be marching in support of Palestinian liberation. What the fuck is happening. People are literally spreading the rumor that the march is anti Palestinian and Zionists “infiltrated” this organization. Because a badly worded statement calling for safety for all marchers was released and deleted before a longer one was released.
Anyways I’m still going to Dyke March because every year it’s an incredible experience of thousands of queer people from all over taking the streets to scream for human rights and queer rights around the globe. And this year the march will be focused on supporting those who are facing genocides. From Sudan to Palestine. From Myanmar to Somalia. We are Dykes against Genocide. We are not safe until we are all free from violence!

Rewatched Weekend for the first time since about late 2014 maybe when I first watched it to do something pride-themed today (since my plans to check out this year's NYC Queer Liberation March fell through lol), and it still holds up pretty well; meeting someone by chance (at a bar, off The Apps, how-have-you) and bonding so well with them over even just two days that it suddenly hits as they're about to leave for so long--it's a sweet idea that gives me those nice goosebumps now because I can think back to similar cases I've had since watching it before where I met a guy on Grindr/the gym/somehow asking them out at my Starbucks and it would occasionally become something more that felt nice to experience with them (usually happening more with the latter, like the couple of guys I went on dates with while working at Starbucks or even meeting my first bf there). A nice rewatch

I went to the Queer Liberation March today in NYC, which is not a parade but a protest, with no corporate sponsors. And at a time when corporations are folding like little babies at moderate levels of right-wing blowback --- as we all always fucking knew they would --- it was good to remember that when no one else shows up for us, we show up for us. Queer Liberation will not be sponsored by Wells Fargo. Queer liberation will be brought about by people with homemade protest signs and furry suits and leather harnesses and tee shirts they have bejazzled to say DYKE
