hikaru ga shinda natsu is about coming back wrong and haunting the narrative and being queer in a small rural town and internalised homophobia and summers that feel like they'll never end and the codependent homoerotic friendship you had when you were 15 and what it means to be dead or alive and navigating a world you feel like you dont belong to and grief and mourning and obsession and love and most importantly, having gay thoughts for the eldritch monster that bodysnatched your friend's corpse

Book recommendation masterpost
As my list of rec posts grows, I figured it might be time to write a masterpost that I can continuously update and link back to.
Some notes on how I structure my lists: I generally try to stick to adult and young adult titles (with a mention in the synopsis if it's a YA), however on occasion I will include a middle grade if I need to fill out the list or if it’s a little known or especially good book I want to highlight. The lists are a mix of already pretty well-known titles (sometimes a book is famous for a reason, okay) and lesser known names, as long as they fit the theme and were an enjoyable read. I do try to make the lists diverse, but I will not include a book simply for diversity's sake - this is a subjective project, and if I didn’t enjoy a book it will get booted to honorary mentions even if the main character is gay.
Many books will appear on multiple lists as it covers multiple themes. In some cases, a title that got featured on one list might end up only on the honorary mentions of another. Honorary mentions books are generally titles I didn’t super care for personally, but sometimes I will feel they are still a good example of some particular theme and include them in the main list. I mark my favorite books and do try to mention when an included book had notable flaws, however, the lists are not reviews. I try to keep the synopses brief, and do not consistently include things like personal opinions or content warnings. If a title sounds interesting to you, I recommend still looking into it on your own if you need content warnings. I do sometimes write reviews on my Goodreads, but my rec lists are merely rec lists.
Without further ado, here is the list so far:
Really cool fantasy worldbuilding
Really cool sci-fi worldbuilding
Dark sapphic romances
Mermaid books
Vampire books
Many worlds: portal fantasies
Many worlds: alternate timelines
Robots and artificial intelligences
Post- and transhumanism
Alien intelligences
Queer science fiction part 1, part 2
Possession/bodysnatching
Evil fungi
Black science fiction
Queer fantasy part 1
Fairy books
Space books part 1
Queer horror part 1
Werewolf books
Angel books
Monster/creature friendships

911 Season 7 Critique
This is a long post. If you don’t make it to the end, I totally understand.
I know we all have lots of feelings about this season and most of what I’ve read from others in the fandom here on tumblr has been overwhelmingly positive, but I have serious and persistent concerns. Here me out, if you’re willing and able.
This entire season something about 911 has felt off for me in a big way. I couldn’t quite put my finger on exactly what the problem was until recently. All I knew was that season 7 was weird out the gate. Now I finally think I have something coherent to say about this season now that it’s over. The whole season’s main plot(s) have been overblown and overworked. All season long, the characters have felt bodysnatched by extraterrestrials being just similar enough to our beloved characters to not raise total alarm - at least initially - but different enough to snatch some epic side-eye outta me. Then ep 4 happened and the whole time I was a mix of elated and confused. Anybody who’s been paying attention for the last 7 years knows that Buck is queer so that wasn’t the shocker. For me, it was the way everything went down in ep 4 with the characters that felt heavy-handed and untrue to who they are. The weird strange bizarreness through the season just kept on coming like a freight train with no breaks or relief. By the finale I was scratching my head and kinda irritated because the tiny bit of actual character work that we saw over the course of the season was odd as hell and now it’s over and I’m not really excited about much of anything that’s supposed to be coming in s8. The characters feel too ooc and the plots feel too uncharacteristic of 911. Like for a bit there I thought I was watching Days of Our Lives meets Miami Vice meets The Walking Dead, and that’s not what I signed up for with 911.
Season 7 left me earnestly wondering: Where are the family feels, the tight bonds, the heartfelt connections, the vulnerable conversations, the healing community that is the 118, the fucking togetherness? Everyone feels like they are adrift and alone without the found family support that they enjoyed in previous seasons. This season has been a trauma fest with little to no emotional payoff. Drama for its own sake. Problems resurrected, rehashed, blown way out of proportion, repackaged, and sold as authentic current issues. This season I felt like I was watching a completely different show.
Yes we are on a new network. Yes Tim is back. Yes a bit of shake up can be good. But this doesn’t feel like a good shake up. I feel like I’m being jerked around for sport. Like past BS is being thrown in my face instead of laid on the table and worked through by the characters that I know and love. Season 7 was mostly just trauma porn and I did not enjoy it.
Yes we could argue that Tim is trying to grab the attention of new viewers on a new network. But honestly that kind of feels like a cop-out explanation given what he delivered. If I were new to this show, I would not feel like I have any idea who these characters are beyond the wild crap that happens to them. I feel like I know more about how to sink a cruise ship or how to traverse the desert than I do about how the characters relate and connect with one another.
As someone who’s watched 911 from the very beginning live and in real time, the plotting, pacing, and character choices in season 7 feel like Tim is putting on a show instead of telling stories. Shows are a wacky wild ride with little cohesion and/or progress; characters take a backseat to whatever the ptb can cook up for the weekly plot. Stories center characters and what’s happening to them is processed by them and moves their arcs along in mostly coherent ways. A show is ‘shit happens’. A story is ‘shit happens TO ME AND I DEAL WITH IT in ways that show the audience who I am and what matters to me’’.
Maybe season 8 will feel more like a story since it won’t be a truncated season, and season 7 has reintroduced people to - aka dredged up long-past but somehow present again - character issues. I don’t know. I hope season 8 is more coherent, character-focused, and progress/healing-oriented like previous seasons have been. Honestly the show has been running too long to act like rehashing the past over and over again is enough to carry it for 7 more seasons.
Anyway, my specific concerns with season 7 are below the cut.
The main plots have just been hilariously bad. Soap opera levels of wtaf.
The cruise ship disaster had pirates, cheaters, and poorly-developed conflicts between lovers all of which (mostly) came out of the thin blue sea air and/or were handled in incredibly ooc ways. MIssing groom because of viral encephalitis. Hospital wedding like its a good thing and preferable to the warm fuzzies that Madney deserved. Long-dead wife put on such a high pedestal by Eddie that she walks the earth once more. Bobby chasing a random man from his past into the desert to say/do what exactly? All while mixing it up with a literal Mexican cartel. A desert crossing complete with traumatic flashbacks, a car crash, and a makeshift stretcher. (Bobby should have left Amir where he was after the crash and just walked the mile to the road without him in tow. But instead he slowed himself down and risked sunstroke in the process. That was a drama choice made by the writers, not a paramedic/firefighter choice made by the character.) Post-house fire Bobby’s heart stops for 14 whole ass minutes and he wakes up fine and perky as meringue. Athena Grant choosing cold-blooded vengeance over holding vigil for her allegedly dying husband. Racist and misogynistic Gerard returning for absolutely no narrative or character-related reason at all, at least not for one that couldn’t be more effectively accomplished by some/any other means.
The women have been side-lined in their own stories, and/or their characters altered in problematic ways.
Hen dismissed the councilwoman’s son in the season’s opening arc and ignored his potential injuries because he was being an asshole. A lesser paramedic would do that, but NOT our Hen. Also that plot point was unrealistic af because if someone is not in their right mind to make a life-saving decision for themselves, like in the case of intoxication, medical personnel can ethically treat them anyway. It was such a weird plot/character choice to Hen use that guy’s intoxication as a reason NOT to treat him when it’s actually a great reason to go ahead and check him out. She should have and would have worked the problem (poised and professional) instead of storming off in a huff (emotion-driven and unethical) because that guy was being a dick. Hen is not easily unsettled, nor is she unprofessional!
Hen and Karen were oddly clueless about Mara’s trauma and the fact that it was actively relevant to her behavior when they took her in, despite the fact that they have fostered several children at this point in the story. They considered “returning her” before they considered the trauma factor. Unreal. Our Hen and Karen were not born yesterday, are no strangers to hard times with foster kids, and have hearts the size of the 7 seas. This writing choice made no sense to me and made Hen and Karen feel like extraterrestrials to me. Ignorant ones at that. In the finale, Hen didn’t tell Karen she was going to see Mara. Like. Why? They talk about everything. Hen claimed it’s because Karen would have tried to stop her but we all know that would have been a half-hearted comment while she put her shoes on and grabbed her purse. No. Hen and Karen are partners and they act like it. The one woman show era between them has been over for a while. Especially when it comes to their family.
Athena and Bobby had a conversation at the end of season 4 about cutting each other out and leaving each other emotionally stranded and since then have been actively committed to communicating and staying a team. So what the hell was that vibe between them on the cruise. Athena was evasive and weird the whole time and in the most banal gender stereotyped way possible. In addition, Tim seems obsessed with women as damsels in distress this season which is not and has never been Athena’s vibe. Even with the Jeffrey arc in season 5 while she coped with the trauma of that encounter, she displayed agency. So I’ll never understand her indirect approach to dealing with Bobby running off to ‘Step 9’ Amir or her decision to turn right around and talk to Amir about Bobby instead of talking to Bobby directly. Athena is a direct person, especially about her family. She cuts to the quick and gets to the heart of things. The drama I needed was Bathena working through Athena’s fears for Bobby and Bobby working through his trauma/recovery with Athena…not a Mexican cartel and shenanigans in the desert. Then there was the way Harry talked to Athena when she discovered that he ran away from Miami. Athena’s response to Harry would have been understanding but corrective. She wouldn’t have stood there and let him disrespect her. Not in a million lifetimes. She also wouldn’t have left her allegedly dying husband at the hospital to reenact a revenge plot from some B movie. Plus what was up with her blaming herself for Amir supposedly burning the house down, and her doing no police work to puzzle out what happened? She just went on an emotion-fueled rampage. That’s not how Athena operates. Remember her namesake, goddess of WISDOM and warfare. Come on bffr.
Maddie. Oh where do I even start. From ep 1 she was treated like a means to an end instead of the first responder former nurse badass that she is. This whole season, she comes across as ‘just another dispatcher’ instead of the focused problem-solver and active agent that we know her to be. Prior to season 7 Maddie would have had her thinking cap fully on right along with Hen in the first episodes as they worked out a way to get in touch with the cruise ship. Calling Tommy could have even been Maddie’s idea since Chim and Tommy are still in touch but Hen and Tommy don’t seem to be. Then there was the whole Maddie hearing what she expected to hear with the abuse victim on that one call. Like. What?! This is not Maddie’s first rodeo, she is not easily unsettled, and she’s a damn professional. She would have done what she had to do to emotionally regulate and help the woman in danger before she let herself ‘hear what she expected to hear’. Admittedly she would have cried the whole time because that’s JLH’s jam and she’s good at it but Maddie wouldn’t have fallen down so hard on the job (especially not after what happened in season 3 with Tara and Vincent). And the wedding stuff! Maddie was just watching and waiting instead of using what she knew about her partner in life Chim to deduce where he might go or what he might do. Instead of collecting information about their previous calls and how they might be playing into Chim’s disappearance, she was busy being insecure about whether Chim actually wanted to marry her. Mind you, Maddie was the one who was originally reticent about marrying again AND she’s the one who proposed to Chim. After all the drama with the ring, there is no world in which Maddie would have imagined Chim was running from her. She would have known something bad was up and that it had nothing to do with their love for one another. In the finale Maddie calls Chim to talk about Athena’s suss behavior but Maddie has more connections and professional wherewithal than just ‘call my husband he’ll know what to do’. She would have called the precinct and asked about 727-L-30 in a discreet way and put most of the pieces together herself and then actually sent Chim and Hen to stop her. And she would have been ready at a moment’s notice to call the cops on the rogue cop. The way that scene actually played out felt more like gossip on the high school bleachers than Maddie doing her actual job.
The relationships seem plain odd/ooc, distant, and/or superficial. Very few vulnerable emotional conversations happened and when they did they felt generic, shallow, and/or incomplete.
Bobby and Athena on the cruise. Athena just didn’t feel like herself because she refused to talk to Bobby. When they did finally talk it was when they were about to drown and it was more of a mini-therapy session for Bobby. After Amir was introduced, Bobby pulled away again and Athena let him. Then Athena chose to approach the traumatized stranger rather than have a talk with her own damn husband. When they finally confronted each other about that situation, she walked away from Bobby almost like she was punishing him for walking away first instead of them both leaning into the conversation as partners. Really? Bffr.
Buck and Eddie having a bro convo about womanizing in the early episodes of the season. The ‘hey pal please talk to my kid bro because you have experience with these issues’ rather than the all important ‘there’s no one in this world I trust with my son more than you’ vibes of it all. Eddie making limited eye contact with Buck and ignoring him in ep 4. Eddie’s physical demeanor in ep 4 being bro-ed up and distant. Yeah I know we can argue that was all from Buck’s perspective in the moment but that explanation seems insufficient to me because it was so extreme, and was kind of maintained in some ways throughout the season. The ‘i’m gonna maim my best friend’ energy of the bucktommy origin story despite the fact that buck is not violent at all and definitely not towards loved ones. (Tim seems determined to ruin everybody just enough to generate unnecessary and ooc drama.) Buck’s weird dudebro conversation with Eddie while on his date with Tommy as if the foundation of buck and eddie’s relationship has ever been conversations about women solely to assert their heterosexuality * facepalm emoji * The super textbook sterile coming out scene in ep 5 like these guys aren’t besties and don’t actually know each other deeply. I wanted that coming out scene to have 504 patio conversation energy, not whatever it was we got in 704. Like that coming out conversation could have played out the exact same with one of the no-name background firefighters at the 118 or with Connor or some other rando. It felt so impersonal to who they are and to their particular brand of vulnerable courageous conversations. Honestly even the hug in 704 was weird. I was happy to have it but it was still weird. The kitchen conversation in ep 9 at Eddie’s place felt odd and incomplete for buddie. We get queer sexual innuendo (‘skulking around my back door’), basic mutual acknowledgment of worry about the dead wife doppelganger, and that’s a wrap? Okay I guess * eyeroll emoji * Then we had the finale where Eddie is obviously losing his mind and Buck is just sitting on the arm of the couch like ‘i dunno what to tell you man’. Like they’ve never had a (chris) conversation before in their life. Like buck wouldn’t have been the one to VOLUNTEER to go talk to chris without eddie spelling it out. Like buck wasn’t the person who stayed with chris talked to him and took care of him when eddie got shot and when eddie lost his damn mind in 513. The buck in the finale was not the buck who did all those things. He was so bodysnatched it’s not even funny. Also, in what world would buck have snarked that chris can’t keep eddie out of his room??? Buck, my good sir, if eddie wanted to break down chris’ door he wouldn’t have called you over bc he can do that on his own without a consult. That scene felt ooc af plus the dialogue was just plain dumb.
Hen and Chim have barely had a meaningful friend moment this season. It’s mostly Hen razzing Chim, a polite smile, or nada. Let’s not even talk about the ‘betrayal’ in the beginning with the councilwoman’s son and then the deeply meaningless drama that ensued after. So much so that they commented on it in a joking way on the helicopter. That’s not how Hen and Chim roll. They give each other clear and unapologetic honesty at all times. Not the cold shoulder for sport which is what it felt like when Hen finally said she wasn’t actually mad. The gender and racial implications of how that played out are not lost on me. It felt like a 180 from how these characters normally interact in serious circumstances. Complete waste of time and invented drama for drama’s sake. I don’t blame Hen and Chim for that, like everything else I’ve mentioned in this critique of the season, it’s pure writing room weirdness.
Bobby’s locker room conversation with Buck in ep 9 was more like mentor-mentee than father-son. We’ve stated that as their dynamic several times but that’s not what we got in that locker room. They were standing several feet apart, Bobby and Buck smiled politely, no hug, no shoulder pat. Just textbook sterile ‘you’re okay kid’. Bobby could have given that speech to no-name firefighter number 12 and it would have felt the same.
You mean to tell me in the finale that Bobby was just gonna stroll back into work in uniform after quitting like nothing happened? Like he’s still employed. My good sir, you didn’t even call headquarters before showing up to be like ‘just kidding i want my job back’. You mean to tell me Buck and Ravi were at work, in uniform and clocked in, but didn’t already know Gerard was there? You mean to tell me Bobby was supposedly that allergic to having a real emotional/vulnerable conversation with literally anybody that he strolled into work WHEN HE NO LONGER WORKS THERE like he was gonna get to actually work??? I just can’t -
Anyway, this post is long af so if you made it to the end, thank you. Honestly, I'm still processing this season but as of now, in the words of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, “I take no leave of you, [Tim Minear]. I send no compliments to your [season 7 showrunner decisions]! You deserve no such attention! I am seriously displeased!”

okay so, yesterday I found your spn meta by chance and fell in love with them 'cause more than writing they're like images, like they really depict things and I just immediately understand what you mean instantly + I started to rewatch Steve Yockey's episodes 'cause I feel like I like his writing (lots of queer! lots of rom-com references! but it's all done so intellingently, I love it!) but ALSO sometimes it doesn't translate to me + I just saw you wrote about "Optimism"= I GOTTA ASK: what's your take on "Optimism"? I don't understand what the Zombie story and the Musca one should reveal about the characters. Visually, it looks like the Musca = Charlie, so Harper and the zombie are ??? I'm mad at myself 'cause I don't seem to get what the show is telling me so I'm hoping you can share what the show tells YOU and, vicariously, I can get it as well (lol). THANK YOU!
Hi! Hello!
Oh, really? That's so cool. I still have trouble thinking of myself as a "meta writer." I don't mean to be. I just like to ramble. But cool! It's probably mostly that we think alike and are sympatico in some key ways. :-) Always fun to find kindred spirits!
///
O P T I M I S M
I have so many thoughts on Optimism. It's one of my fave episodes! I actually did a re-watch-slash-convo with some friends on Discord and just transcribed the very, very, very LOOONG bulk of it today!
I haven't written much on the Musca. After spending a lot of time of @scoobydoodean's blog, I've just about decided the Musca plot is actually a Sam's emotions-through line more than it is a true dark mirror. Even AU Charlie is cheeky about it:
AU CHARLIE (annoyed at Sam, about the Musca): Your nifty metaphor has holes.
Basically, Charlie is saying that mirrors aren't one-to-one, and that trying to force-fit them into being one-to-one can be super annoying sometimes.
//
CHARLIE - Every two hundred years there is "bad egg". When a male fails to find a mate, he abandons his community and starts using peoples bodies to "nest". Binding them together with a viscous goo. And when the goo fits...
//
The Musca/fly is at face-value:
A) A bodysnatcher plot: In that regard, it could be like all angels, demons, or anyone inhabiting a body. (Cas, Lucifer, Michael, Crowley, etc.) Ergo, it's a dark, uncharitable Cas mirror the way Dave Mathers outlaw wraith was in Tombstone. It could be saying that Cas "failed" among "his own people" and cruelly took up space in a human body. But that would be grossly oversimplifying the whole situation, saying that Cas "should have stayed with his people," which ofc doesn't work.
It, as Charlie says, "has a lot of holes." @ilarual has written a lot about the totalitarian structure of Heaven. And Sam himself wants Cas around. As far as metaphors go, it's a dud for Cas.
B) It's a failure to thrive plot: Because the Musca "failed" in The Real World with its Own People, perhaps failed to live up to The prescriptive Dream of Success (TM), now it's wreaking havoc on others.
Sam himself "failed out" of Harvard. He "choked." Kevin Train and Patience Turner are also Failed Gifted Students. Losers who didn't live up to their potential. This could even apply to Chuck, binding together his characters because he's a Loser with a capital L.
///
ANYWAY, I feel like the Music plot is a "red herring" for a few reasons.
One: The main Harper plot is about breaking narratives, about not relying so much on books. And then Charlie says this:
CHARLIE: Goo. So, yeah. I'd say this is the right place. Now, I'm just trying to figure out what we are dealing with. Thus, books.
Aside: Later Cas says sarcastically in Ouroboros that Sam and Rowena, "Have many, many books."
So, there's this niggling indictment of trying to find too much truth in books...
///
Two: Sam has a tendency to see something and, like, imprint on it. He tends to fall into "It's just like me!" instead of speaking frankly about the present situations and emotions.
*In American Nightmare, he sees Madga Peterson, an abused child* -> "She's just like me!"
*In Somewhere in Between Heaven and Hell, he sees someone lying about something completely unrelated to his current situation* ->"Omg, they're lying to them, like I'm lying to Dean! It's just like me!"
*In Lost & Found, he meets Jack Kline, who is Lucifer's son "OMG, he's just like me!" -> *spoiler alert* Jack is not in fact much like Sam at all. -> Sidenote: instead of speaking frankly about how Dean is grieving, how Lucifer killed Cas and likely killed Mary, he uses complex euphemisms with Jack, ones that actually obscure the reality of the situation! This winds up annoying Jack and making him pull away from Sam.
///
IMHO...Sam isn't...naturally all that great with emotions.
He tries really, really hard, and he loves patterns, but he's always seeming to force-fit situations and scenarios into neat little boxes so he can passively-aggressively use it to indirectly communicate something he feels about himself.
He has a very cognitive empathy style. Bless him.
///
So what's REALLY going on here?
Well. In this episode, he wants Charlie to stay. He wants Charlie to stay and fill a void the other Charlie left behind. He wants Charlie to stay really, really badly. And he beats around the bush about it.
At first, he sidesteps his own emotions by passive-aggressively implying that it's Dean that in fact needs her.
CHARLIE: He'll be fine. Your brother, I mean. He's got other friends, right? SAM: Plenty. Uhm, he used to have a pretty damn good wingman. CHARLIE: So call that guy to check on him. SAM: That guy was you. CHARLIE: No, it wasn't. SAM: Right, I, uh, sorry. I didn't mean that.
And then by trying to make the case fit her.
He's very indirect and weird about it. Because he's Sam. (It's a contrast to the effortless, awkward-but-honest communication style we see from characters like Jack and Dean in this very episode.)
SAM: Charlie, you can't just quit and go live on a mountain somewhere. People need people. CHARLIE: Why? Cause they're the luckiest people in the world? SAM: Look, come on. We just do. We're social animals. CHARLIE: Emphasis on animals. SAM: Yeah, but you're also a hunter. The things that we've seen, it's not so easy to just walk away from it all. Believe me, I've tried. Our Charlie tried. CHARLIE: Yeah, well again, she ain't me. It's my life, Sam. Not hers. And not yours.
Ah, yes. Instead of saying, “I want you here,” it’s, “people need people.”
And Hell, sometimes indirect communication works! Like how Dean and Cas use Felix the snake to indirectly communicate with Jack in Peace of Mind!
But the difference with Sam is...he's not using this indirect communication style to find out how Charlie feels (the way Dean and Cas use the snake to suss out how Jack feels).
No, he's using the whole thing to try to tell Charlie what he thinks is best for her! To tell her things, not find out things.
Eventually, he breaks and says what he actually thinks, but only after AU Charlie is starting to lose her patience with him:
SAM (faux-sadly): Got to say, I do feel kind of bad for the Musca. I mean, he could have been happy if he'd stayed with his people. Didn't have to go off on his own just because... CHARLIE (exasperated): Okay, I get it. I am just like the bug and I shouldn't go out on my own.
OMG, Sammy! It's okay if we want to hit Sam sometimes, right? I too wanted to hit him after he said this to Charlie.
CHALIE: But your nifty metaphor has holes. I wasn't looking for love. I found it and I lost it. And I didn't kill people and literally nest in their body parts so...(Scene cuts to other Musca removing the body of the dead one) SAM: Okay, yeah I know, I know, How about this? Don't leave.
(Aside// I think this is a cheeky nod to the fact that Cas and Dean weren't looking for love either. In fact, they tried (and keep trying) really, really hard not to love each other. Their real life was faaaar more complicated than some simple "bodysnatcher plot.")
But thank God--Sam finally says outright what he needed to say to Charlie: Don't leave.
Now, it probably would've been better if he's gone a step further: "I don't want you to leave," but for Sam, this is pretty good progress.
SAM: Hear me out. Sure some people can do bad things when they're desperate or scared. But the guy we just saved, he has a wife and children. I'm not saying that all people are good people or even that most people are but if we help people then maybe they'll help people and all that. And that's worth it. Even with all the tears and death. It's worth it. CHARLIE: Just to be super clear, I am not like the fly monster. (Sam chuckles) But, I'll think about staying.
So I think OVERALL the Musca plot is really about highlighting Sam's difficult communication style, and I think it's intentionally being cheeky about it how it's using a "really "dumb metaphor" with gaping holes!
It's about how Sam tries to force-fit the case of the week into saying what he wants it to say...instead of just saying it.
///
I think Sam has a little bit of a "mental main character syndrome." He sees a scenario and moves directly into cognitive empathy, reading the situation and thinking:
How can I apply this to myself? Or make it a stand-in for either something I want to believe about myself or a stand-in for something I want to say indirectly?
Sometimes you'll see ppl insist that Sam is the "MC" because every storyline tells you "something about Sam." But I'm more in the camp that it's Sam's inherent cognitive style of empathy at work, desperately reworking anything and everything to make it apply to himself.
Whereas Cas and Dean (and Jack) have a truer emotional style of empathy, connecting with people for who they actually are, as they are.
That's not to say that both styles can't be manipulative when we want them to be. But Sam really struggles with his style in a way I feel like Dean and Cas do not. Dean and Cas perhaps don't even realize what effective communicators they actually are!

About
MEXICAN GOTHIC X DRACULA X THE STORY OF BURKE & HARE
A queer Gothic Historical Horror set in Victorian Edinburgh ft. mushrooms, cults, the cutting edge of (1800s) medical science, spooky manors and bodysnatchers.
Synopsis
Dr Ernest Mayweather is the only patient he can't treat. He's dying, and he's looking desperately to find a way to stop it. When a colleague of his at the prestigious University of Edinburgh Medical College discusses the avant-garde idea of using one disease to cure another, he begins a pursuit of the thing that will save his life. It leads him to a strange illness wherein strange flowers and funghi grow within the body. Curious, and keen to study it, he visits Auchindrain House, a sanctuary for the illness run by two mysterious aristocrats and their Italian acquaintance. When the horrifying nature of the house and its occupants come to light, Ernest must soon choose between accepting a quick and quiet death or chasing something potentially endless, with all the blood and horror that might come with it. What will Ernest's conscience allow him to do to survive?

It currently stands at around 69k, though by the end of this draft I think we'll be looking closer to 120k.
As of October 2023 I'm currently working on the second draft! I did a detailed re-outline after the first draft which I completed in April 2021 for Camp, and now I'm filling in all the extra scenes I need before I rewrite the novel again following the comprehensive developmental editing plan I've made, focussing on adding extra detail and coherence, especially in terms of the plot. I was initially hoping to finish this by the end of October, but at this rate, it's looking like that's not going to happen, so I'll probably pick this up again in February. (One thing you have to know, is that each month I shift projects to another one of those in rotation. I aim to always have one new project, one dev edit project and one later-stage project in rotation at all times to reduce fatigue!)

Can you explain how Dios story is a trans allegory? I’ve never heard that before and I’m curious
this has been sitting in my inbox for like two months and i'm very sorry i've procrastinated so long on answering but anyway
disclaimer: this is very much a biased analysis. i am transgender and dio is my #1 favorite character of all time, and i intentionally pick apart stories and plotlines and relate them to things i experience. this will include headcanons and unpopular/uncommon interpretations. also, words have been very difficult lately (thanks, autism) so sorry if this sounds weird. and please remember that this is based on my experiences -- not all trans people feel the same way i do. this is largely rooted in the experience of gender dysphoria, and not all trans people are dysphoric, or feel the envy or sadness ttat i do about it.
the easiest aspect of his story to relate to the trans experience is the whole body-switching thing. at the surface level, it can be seen like fucked-up HRT. (born in the wrong body? steal someone else's!) but on a deeper level, it can be a metaphor for the effects of HRT, or simply for body dysphoria.
if anyone reading this doesn't have dysphoria, i will explain the experience for them. it can be like living in a body that isn't yours. you can't recognize yourself. you look in the mirror and expect to see you, but all you see is someone else's idea of you. it's wrong. it's horrible.
that could be the experience before OR after he switched bodies. i think about this a lot, actually. what would it be like to live in the body that belonged to someone else? i think it's like physical gender dysphoria. it feels like "not you", even though it's technically yours, at least, it is now.
you look at cis people. they're happy with their body in a way that you aren't. why can't you be happy? you envy them. you want what they have. you have the option of HRT and surgery -- it might fix some things, but will you like it? will it be you? you don't have to do it, but then you'll be stuck with the way you are.
this can be like dio wanting jonathan's body. some people see his envy as a sexual thing, which makes me uncomfortable and i don't understand it, but i can relate it to my personal envy of cis people.
i'll also relate this to being nonbinary. personally, i don't align with a binary gender. i don't want to "fully" transition, i want to keep some of my AGAB's features, but you don't get to pick and choose with hormones. that's why i talk about wondering if you'll like the effects. i came out as nonbinary in 2019 and i still struggle now, in nearly 2024, with doubt.
he sees himself as attractive both pre- and post-bodysnatching. it can be like that for trans people pre- and post-transition. i'm pre-transition and i know i'm very attractive... but it could be better. we want more. we want to achieve our ideal body, not unlike dio's "heaven". i've talked about it before, i think, but dio's "heaven" is really "happiness", and that's also what we (dysphoric transition-intending trans people) seek.
dio is hated by his father (and society as a whole) for no good reason. he is a child. he didn't do anything wrong, and people still hate him, it seems like they hate him just for existing. and i feel that strongly as a trans person. i was disowned by my parents. they've tried to kick me out multiple times for being queer. as much as you try to believe that the world is changing, society still looks down on queers, and i think it always will. you didn't do anything wrong, but the world hates you for being yourself. and that's how i interpret dio (early in phantom blood).
i don't know. i think there's more, but i don't remember and can't put it in words right now. maybe i'll add onto this post someday when i'm more coherent.

Lindsay
Another bit of Good Omens wondering. Does anyone else suppose that there was originally far more plot about Nina's rubbish partner Lindsay/Lindsey, and that what we're left with is a vestigial trace of a cut plot? I was slightly wondering if there might at some point have been a plan to tie that up with something to do with the end of the Resurrectionist plot. Elsewhere in Good Omens 2, "partner" and "spouse" are usually used to signal queer relationships (e.g. the magic-shop owner and his spouse; Nina's assumption about the ineffable idiots) but what if Lindsay is actually a man, a Scottish man?
I wondered this because Aziraphale tells Crowley that Mr Dalrymple left Edinburgh in disgrace and killed himself, which is otherwise a superfluous detail, and the only bit in the series that really stood out to me as superfluous by the end (e.g. the references to flies turn out to be leading up to Beelzebub). We don't get a similar "and Morag lived happily ever after" line. Nor do we find out what happens to Crowley in hell when he's sent there right at the end of the Resurrectionists minisode. I obviously do not know HOW Aziraphale and Crowley's bodysnatching escapade ties up with Nina's shitty partner 200 years later, but (a) we saw Mr Dalrymple not only on the pub sign but on the leaflet, and (b) maybe it is just that Lindsey is either female or non-binary, but actually if we had seen Lindsey it would have been a greater surprise in the context of the series if Lindsey had been cis male (given the general ambience!) - AND people tend not to think of Lindsey as a gender-neutral name unless Scottish. Maggie, after all, has a historic link to Aziraphale through her great-grandfather – could Lindsey be a shitty descendent of Dalrymple?
Anyway, possibly this has been discussed elsewhere, and possibly it's true that we were intended to see more of both Lindsey and Dalrymple but that they bear no resemblance to each other. Just musing.

I just accidentally went down a rabbit hole on this novel I'm writing and wrote an entire chat/thread log for a fake reddit post and unfortunately it's my favorite thing I've written in this whole thing so far
Re: My sister came back wrong
Burnr1883: Guys, I still think it might be possession. Mary’s eyes have been GLOWING. The first couple times I thought it was the light but it’s NOT.
Jamesand: why would that mean possession
Burnr1883: What else goes inside of a human body and shows in their EYES? They’re the window to the soul
Jamesand: mods can we get a reminder about religious talk
Thetruthis0utth3r3: it’s relevant if it really is possession tho
Jamesand: are you joking
Jamesand: this is a SERIOUS sub, guys
Jamesand: if you have actual evidence of possession, fine. but I doubt it
2themountains: you know they don’t have evidence, James.
2themountains: we all know what it really is, anyway.
Burnr1883: I’m looking at every possibility
Jamesand: true. he just doesn’t want to hear it
Jamesand: see you in a week to say I told you so
2themountains: if it’s not already in -your- head by then.
Re: My sister came back wrong
Jamesand: big if
thetruthis0utth3r3: any updates??
Burnr1883: nothing new, yet. She’s been... really normal? Really nice. Nicer than she used to be.
x3sycamore: well, that makes sense since it isn’t her right
Re: My sister came back wrong
Burnr1883: I guess.
Burnr1883: she was in my room last night.
Jamesand: ???????
st0pfrodotime: this sub is getting weird dude
2themountains: what was she doing?
Burnr1883: I don’t know. But I heard her come in.
Burnr1883: I mustve fallen asleep before she left, I don’t remember her walking back out
2themountains: and do you feel any different?
thetruthis0utth3r3: shit man what do you think she did to him?????
Burnr1883: No
Burnr1883: I don’t think so
Burnr1883: Should I? I feel... stupid. Why am I so scared that a 19 year old girl was in my room? I used to have to put bandaids on her because she was always falling over. Why should I be scared of THAT girl?
2themountains: because she’s not that girl anymore.
thetruthis0utth3r3: she isnt even human anymore
Burnr1883: she was just. standing there.
Jamesand: and you’re SURE this actually happened? this isn’t another lucid dreaming post, right??
x3sycamore: I thought this sub was about trusting each other’s stories, james
Jamesand: trust but verify.
Burnr1883: I’m pretty sure
Jamesand: PRETTY sure? 🙄
2themountains: what did you see?
Burnr1883: I barely opened my eyes. I was pretending I was asleep. But I saw a little. I saw her
Burnr1883: Her shadow. Her eyes.
Burnr1883: They were glowing again
Burnr1883: yellow
Burnr1883: so yellow
Burnr1883: I thought she was moonlight at first. It was a full moon
Burnr1883: and then I saw her open her mouth
2themountains: and her mouth?
st0pfrodotime: ???????
st0pfrodotime: WHERE THE HELL DID HE GO AFTER ALL THAT
Burnr1883: If I put my webcam on tonight
Burnr1883: would anyone watch the livestream?
Burnr1883: just... just in case
x3sycamore: shit man of course
Re: My sister came back wrong
Burnr1883: I think she might be an angel
Jamesand: mods.
x3sycamore: aint nothing angelic about those things, burner
Burnr1883: she’s just like Mary, but better
Burnr1883: she used to be so angry
2themountains: don’t trust anything that won’t let you see it get angry.
Burnr1883: it’s like she’s been cleansed
Thetruthis0utth3r3: or like she’s lying to you
x3sycamore: turn on your webcam again tonight
x3sycamore: we’ll watch you
Burnr1883: you don’t need to do that anymore
Jamesand: sycamore, you’re not allowed to ask for pictures or footage
x3sycamore: fuck man can’t you ease off the rules for two seconds no one’s asking for nudes or face pics im trynna keep a man alive
Burnr1883: she won’t hurt me
x3sycamore: burner that thing is NOT your sister
Burnr1883: she’s perfect
thetruthis0utth3r3: yeah, like only an anglerfish is perfect to the thing that needs light
x3sycamore: don’t let the parasite trick you, man, you’ve read everything on the forums you know better than this
x3sycamore: Burner????
x3sycamore: @Burnr1883
x3sycmore: @Burnr1883 @Burnr1883
2themountains: he’s gone.
Re: My sister came back wrong
2themountains: let him go.
x3sycamore: Burner? Any updates??
thetruthis0utth3r3: you dont actually expect him to answer do you
thetrutis0utth3r3: it’s been 2 days already
x3syacmore: 2 days is nothing. He could have logged off.
thetruthis0utth3r3: it’s not nothing when you’re living with one of them
x3sycamore: he didn’t leave the sub
thetruthis0utth3r3: yeah well that’s not usually dead people’s priority
x3sycamore: what are you trying to say
thetruthis0utth3r3: come on, don’t play dumb
Jamesand: some people just don’t want to hear the truth
2themountains: soon, no one’s gonna be able to play dumb
thtruthis0utth3r3: they’re really coming, aren’t they
Jamesand: they’re here
2themountains: this sub is growing. the news is finally starting to talk all about those mysterious “disappearances” and “sicknesses”
2themountains: forget about Burner. worry about who it’s gonna be next.
x3sycamore: Burner?
Re: My sister came back wrong
x3sycamore: any updates, buddy?

Top 5 monster types? 🧛‍♀️👻🧟‍♀️
Oh boy... Monsters are great so I'm going to have to be a bit general with my types here! I also think this question can be interpreted in at least two different ways but I'll do my best.
1. Any kind of robot or artificial intelligence. This does have the potential to fall flat but can be so so fun when done right.
2. Shapeshifters in general. Very queer inherently plus it allows for a lot of paranoia which is always cool. Bodysnatchers full under this probably.
3. Incorporeal Undead. Ghosts are cool- I especially love fiction with multiple kinds of monsters running around where ghosts just trump other shit and work by their own rules.
4. Spider monsters, spider people, etc etc. I love spiders, and like... probably they don't need to be vilified so much but a good spider monster is just cool.
5. The Divine as monsters. Fucking. Trickster gods and Angels and shit doing inhuman shit is just cool. Obvious overlap here with multiple other entries tbh. Also... I'd probably lump cosmic horror into this too.

Book recs: possession, bodysnatching and bodysharing
Demons, ghosts, aliens, sentient bacteria, artificial intelligences - isn't there something fascinating about the idea of sharing a body with another being like a giant get-along t-shirt? No? Too bad, because I'm going to tell you about books featuring this trope anyway.
A note: multiple of these books are sequels where the bodysnatching/possession aspect plays little to no part in the first book. In all these cases, I still recommend starting with book one. I also in one case chose not to include a certain sequel that I loved as even mentioning it in this context would be a huge spoiler, so, uh, sorry about that.
Tumblr media
For more details on the books, continue under the readmore. Titles marked with * are my personal favorites. And as always, feel free to share your own recs in the notes!
If you want more book recs, check out my masterpost of rec lists!

Brain Plague by Joan Slonczewski*
Chrys, a struggling artist, agrees to become a carrier for a sentient strain of microbes. With their help, Chrys breathes new life into her career and becomes a success. But every microbe society is different - some function as friends and brain enhancers to their carrier, while others become a literal brain plague, a living addiction taking over the life of their carrier. And like every society, the microbe community is in constant flux - including the one inside Chrys's head.
Children of Ruin (Children of Time series) by Adrian Tchaikovsky*
Sequel to Children of Time. Millenia and generation spanning scifi. After the collapse of the Earthen empire, a project to terraform various planets and use them to uplift other species to sentience in left unfinished. However, both species and planets continue evolving on their own, and when what remains of humanity flees the dying Earth millenia later, these planets might be their only hope of survival. But the uplifted species aren't the only intelligent life out there, and are far from the most dangerous as the survivors encounter something capable of terraforming the human body itself.
Leech by Hiron Ennes*
Unbeknownst to humanity, a sentient hive mind has taken over the entire medical profession to ensure the health of their host species. One of their doctors is sent off to an isolated location where they’re cut off from the rest of the hive mind, only to realize they’re faced with a rivaling parasitic entity. Leech hands you only just enough information to get by, and whether its historical fantasy, an alternate timeline, or futuristic post apocalypse is hard to determine. It’s spooky and a bit weird and wildly creative.

A Memory Called Empire (Texicalaan duology) by Arkady Martine
Mahit Dzmare is an ambassador sent to the center of the multi-system Teixcalaanli Empire, where she discovers that her predecessor has died. Trying to protect her home, a small independent mining station, from being taken over by the empire, Mahit struggles to find out the truth of her predecessor's death while carrying the voice of his ghost in her head, guiding her as best he can. Features a sapphic relationship but focuses more on world-building than romance.
Ninefox Gambit (Machineries of Empire trilogy) by Yoon Ha Lee*
Military space opera where belief and culture shape the laws of reality, causing all kinds of atrocities as empires do everything in their power to force as many people as possible to conform to their way of life to strengthen their technology and weapons. It’s also very queer, with gay, lesbian and trans major characters, albeit little to no romance. Disgraced Captain Kel Cheris is given a second chance by allying with the undead Commander Shous Jedao, who in life never lost a battle, but also went mad and massacred his own army. Now, Cheris must decide just how far she can trust him, with her forces as well as with her sense of self.
My Heart is Human by Reese Hogan
Nine years ago, all complex technology was made illegal. This complicates life for Joel, young transgender single father, as a bionic just uploaded itself into his brain without consent. Scared of losing his daughter, Joel tries to keep the bionic secret while using it to fix his life, but things quickly get more complicated as the bionic gains more and more control of his body. A bit simplistic in writing style but makes a lot of cool parallels of bodily autonomy to Joel’s experiences as a transman.
Bonus rec: if you like the general concept of struggling for physical control over one’s body with an AI, may I also suggest the (much grittier and gory) movie Upgrade.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Host by Stehpenie Meyer*
The Host follows Wanderer, an alien part of an invading force on Earth. Humans have been defeated and are being used as host bodies, but Wanderer's host Melanie is being difficult and refuses to fade away. Instead she fills Wanderer's mind with images of Jared, the man she loves and who's still in hiding. With Melanie's feelings bleeding into Wanderer's the two reluctantly ally to find and keep safe the man they both love. While The Host does feature Meyer's trademark romance - of which I'm not the biggest fan - the more interesting and arguably more central relationship is that between Wanderer and her human host.
Needle by Hal Clement
1950s classic. A small island in the pacific ocean and a fourteen-year-old boy have just become the center of an interstellar chase between an alien Hunter and the criminal he’s pursuing. Robert is a regular boy, but he has a very special passenger: an alien symbiont hiding inside his body. The alien became stranded on Earth as he pursued a criminal of his own species, and now they are both trapped on the same island, playing a game of cat and mouse as Robert and the Hunter struggle to find their prey before it finds them.
Malevolent by Harlan Guthrie*
Lovecraftian horror mystery. Private detective Arthur Lester wakes up in his office, his partner dead, memories fuzzy, vision gone, and the voice of a malevolent entity in his mind. Unable to see, Arthur is forced to rely on guidance from the entity as he attempts to solve the mystery of what it is and where it came from. Is this a book? No. But as someone who reads mostly audiobooks, the difference between a book and a fiction podcast is negligible, and also I love this story and its characters and want all of you to do so too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goddess of Filth by V. Castro
Novella. What starts as a drunken seance between friends ends with one of them chanting in Nahuatl, the language of their Aztec ancestors. Following that night, the formerly shy Fernanda has changed. While her family calls for priests, claiming her possessed by a demon, Fernanda's friends believe what has taken up residence in her is something decidedly older. A quick read featuring female rage, desire and empowerment, this is a different twist on the typical possession story.
This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman
Space opera in which humanity found a way to faster than light travel and began establishing colonies all over the galaxy, only to belatedly realize the method of FTL caused irreversible mutations and disabilities and leaving their nascent colonies to die. Much later, many of the colonies have survived and thrived, and one has found a new method of FTL travel, allowing an interconnected space society to grow. However, Earth is on the hunt for their method and is prepared to do anything to steal it. Trapped in the middle of all this and forced on the run is young Jamisia, who is little by little coming to realize that not only might she be the very solution Earth is after, she's also not alone in her own mind and body.
Touch by Claire North*
Kepler should have died long ago, beaten to death in an alley. Instead, a switch happened as Kepler leapt into and took control of the body of the killer. Since then, Kepler has lived in body after body, having gained the ability to inhabit anyone with a touch and stay for anything from a few minutes to an entire lifetime. Kepler cares much for the host bodies, and when one of them is brutally assassinated, Kepler must find the killer, avenge the host's death, and stop it from happening again. You want a fucked up main character with fucked up morals who still genuinely cares for people? Then boy do I have the book for you!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk
Fantasy romance. Beatrice Clayborn is a sorceress, but if her family gets its way she won't remain so for long. Married women are forbidden from practicing magic, and Beatrice's father is intent on marrying her off to save them from destitution. Beatrice has a different plan: become so powerful a sorceress that she can herself save her father's business and becomes too valuable to marry off. To achieve this, she strikes a bargain with a minor spirit of fortune. In return, the spirit demands to be present in Beatrice's body as she experiences her first kiss... a kiss with a man who might jeopardize all her plans.
Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory
Del Perce's world is almost indistinguishable from ours, the only difference being the presence of possessing entities that can strike with little to no warning. When he was young, Del was possessed by one of these demons, which was eventually exorcised. But now he’s experiencing a resurgence of symptoms, a voice in his head demanding to be freed. To save himself, Del races to find out the truth behind the possessions.
The Thousand Eyes (The Serpent Gates duology) by A.K. Larkwood*
Sequel to The Unspoken Name (please read that first, I promise this duology is very worth it). These books have a lot going on: portals, flying ships, orcs, elves, creepy snake gods, possessions, cults, immortal evil mages who traumatize teens as their hobby, gay and lesbian frenemies, the works. Csorwe, born and raised in a cult and meant as a sacrifice, escapes her intended death with a mage who becomes her mentor. But he has dangerous motives of his own, and Csorwe must decide where her loyalties lie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge
Young adult, historical. All her life, Makepeace's mother has been teaching her how to defend herself from the possession of ghosts, until one day her guard drops and a wild and fierce spirit slips in. When Makepeace's mother dies and she is sent to live with her father's family, this spirit might be her only defence. Because her family is harboring dark secrets, and they have plans for Makepeace... plans which do not care for her well-being. Unlike most other YA I've read in terms of vibes and plot, A Skinful of Shadows is a unique and intriguing read.
Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson*
Young adult fantasy. Artemisia prefers the dead to the living, and is training to become a Gray Sister, a nun who helps the souls of the deceased pass on to the afterlife rather than remain as dangerous spirits. To defend her convent, Artemisia accepts the help of a dangerous revenant, a powerful spirit which grants her great power but also could possess her the moment her guard is lowered. As evil threatens her homeland, Artemisia and the revenant must find a way to work together.
A Psalm of Storms and Silence by Roseanne A. Brown
Young adult fantasy. Sequel to A Song of Wraiths and Ruin. To save his family, Malik has made a deal with a dangerous spirit with equally dangerous demands - the death of the princess. Meanwhile, princess Karina is seeking her own power, meaning to resurrect her assassinated sister no matter what the prize. As their paths intertwine, the consequences of their pursuits keep getting higher, both for them, their nation, and the entire world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grey Sister (Book of the Ancestor trilogy) by Mark Lawrence
Sequel to Red Sister. Fantasy with sci-fi flavor. Nona is being raised to become a killer at the Convent of Sweet Mercy. But dangerous classes aren’t Nona's only problem: her planet is slowly dying, and her own inner demons whisper in her mind. As the sun grows weaker and ice creeps ever closer, Nona and her allies race to save themselves from extinction.
Fifth Quarter (Quarters series) by Tanya Huff*
Sequel to Sing the Four Quarters. Fifth Quarter is only loosely connected to the first book in the series so you could read it as a standalone, however I still recommend starting with Sing the Four Quarters as it is very good. Bannon and Vree are siblings and highly skilled assassins, but they are put to the test when a failed assassination finds them sharing a body, their intended victim having stolen Bannon's. Now, they must choose between remaining loyal to their Empire, or helping their supposed victim find a new body to steal - and he doesn't want just any body, he wants the royal prince.
The Nein Eyes of Lucien by Madeline Roux*
Recommended with the caveat that you're unlikely to get the full experience unless you have also watched Critical Role Campaign 2 (which is quite the time investment, but very worth it). It follows the antagonist Lucien, first owner of the body we know as Mollymauk Tealeaf, both before Lucien lost his body and after he regains it in the ultimate struggle against Mollymauk's old friends, the Mighty Nein.
Bonus AKA I haven't read these yet but they seem really cool
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Scratch Daughters (The Scapegracers trilogy) by H.A. Clarke
Sequel to The Scrapegracers. Sideways Pike used to be able to perform only party tricks, but in finding new friends and starting a coven, the four become powerful witches. But not everyone wants witches around. After having gotten her spectre stolen and losing her ability to perform magic, Sideways is forced to rely on Mr. Scratch, a book demon taking the place of her spectre to keep her alive. Now she must struggle to get her magic back before it’s too late.
Riding the Odds by Lynda K. Scott
Sci-fi romance. Tara Rowan is a spaceship captain with secrets - a past she wants to leave behind, and Zie, an organic symbiote which grants her greater strengths and reflexes. But when sexy Holy Knight Trace Munroe blackmails her in an attempt to rescue a missing princess, Tara's secrets are in danger of being revealed.
What Doesn't Break by Cassandra Khaw
Like The Nine Eyes of Lucien, you're unlikely to get the full experience of What Doesn't Break unless you're also a viewer of Critical Role. It follows the backstory of Laudna, undead sorceress and warlock with the ghostly presence of the necromancer who once murdered her keeping residence in her mind and tugging at her strings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every Day (Every Day trilogy) by David Levithan
Every day, A wakes up with a new body and a new life. A has rules on how to deal with this existence - don't get attached, don't get noticed, and don't interfere. But when A finds themself falling in love, all their established rules no longer apply. This one has also been adapted as a movie!
This Body's Not Big Enough for Both of Us by Edgar Cantero
A. and Z. Kimrean are twin siblings and private eyes - they also share the same body, calling themselves A.Z. When someone starts murdering the sons and heirs of a ruthless crime boss, it falls on A.Z. Kimrean to solve the case and find the killer before all out gang war breaks out.
A Madness of Angels (Matthew Swift series) by Kate Griffin
Two years ago, sorcerer Matthew Swift was killed. Today, he woke back up. And he isn't alone in his body... Now, he seeks vengeance not only against the one who killed him, but also against the one who brought him back.
Honorary mentions AKA these didn't really work for me but maybe you guys will like them: Bone Rider by J. Fally, The Lives of Tao by Wesley Chu, What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang, Hunter of Demons by Jordan L. Hawk, Odder Still by D.N. Bryn

Today nothing works: Dystopia
Today has been weirdly on-point with the prompt - or at least that’s what it feels like without wifi. Feels perfectly fine until you realise your communications are inhibited and you’re in an unfamiliar part of London that seems eerily dead and with nary a café in sight.
And with that, onwards:
Tumblr media
8. Breakdown in communications, violence on the streets, militaristic mind control, total societal meltdown – it’s like living in a Dystopia!
This one would be funny if it wasn’t so realistic. Maybe a good’ol alien body invasion is less terrifying than our respective governments…
