Elucid — Revelator (Fat Possum)
Tumblr media
The way muography works is similar to an X-ray in that it’s basically a noninvasive form of photography, only more intense. Muons, which are cosmic particles akin to neutrinos, are constantly moving through space and matter; captured by a muon detector, they can show an extremely detailed image of what they’ve just passed through. In practical terms, this intense imaging allows engineers to examine the integrity of stuff like the crumbling Brunelleschi’s dome or Berlin’s Kongresshalle. It also acts as a good conduit for thinking about how Elucid raps.
The Queens artist born Chaz Hall is a hip-hop veteran who at this point is probably best known as half of the attention-grabbing, truth-thumping duo Armand Hammer alongside Billy Woods. That group is a study of marked contrasts and otherworldly balance borne of the streets: In one corner, Woods simmering until he can’t help but burn fire and brimstone running roughshod over rhythms and eating up bars with an unhinged urgency as though it were his last meal; in the other, Elucid approaching his rhymes like Rafa Nadal, patiently, relentlessly chipping away with ethereal anger every bit Woods’ equal but drawn in less direct forms, webs spun so far out you’re only sure of what he’s spoken on once he’s passed through you. There’s a reason they resonate, a reason they’ve gotten so well known in less visible hip-hop circles in recent years.
But it’s no different when you go splitting atoms: Like Woods, Elucid is a persistent purveyor of the spoken word in ways that sometimes elude immediate understanding. The dude is battle-hardened and road-tested to the tune of five Armand Hammer LPs; three further collaborations as part of Cult Favorite, Nostrum Grocers and Small Bills; and now, with Revelator, three solo albums. Though all of his records are personal even when they don’t feel that way, Revelator doesn’t come from the same place as I Told Bessie, the paean to his grandmother; rather, it feels like he’s redirecting his focus to the world as he observes it.
Predictably, it ain’t pretty. “Metropolis / Inverse overlord skyscape / Fang bite, dog breath / Short leash, pit fight / From this height, at this speed / Downhill, careening” are the first words you hear to open both “The World Is Dog” and the album. Amid a swirling, industrial-strength beat, Elucid goes in on the basic viciousness of being alive. The familiar theme of survival in an uncaring system is what he — and we, by extension — are up against: Showing you where localized perceived violence didn’t come with receipts, parades of bandages, terroristic threats over crack sales … “Even rebels gotta pause / when blood spill so casually,” he offers early on “CCTV.”
But as he counters himself on “Yottabyte,” the struggle goes on. “You just gotta hold on / all that’s doing / Not an invitation to control / Can’t nobody tell me how my blood taste / My third place / complicating noun combinations over drum breaks.” Just as readily as he scythes through verses ducking and diving and weaving among the perils of living in America in 2024, so too does he point out this isn’t over, that the fight to maintain one’s dignity and morals is a daily occurrence worth the war — you go down, but you go down swinging. Some stretches are more dense, more abstract than others, but no matter the track, no matter the verbal recombinations, you feel those muons leaving a clear picture come its conclusion. The impression is always strong.
Revelator’s production aids and abets his approach. Behind the boards, there’s Michigan producer and Small Bits collaborator The Lasso, August Fanon and Child Actor; in the studio, it’s drummer John Nellen and Irreversible Entanglements bassist Luke Stewart. The result is a swirling, dissonant soundscape following in a proud lineage of New York indie rap albums that extends from JPEGMafia back to Dälek, Def Jux and Public Enemy, ultimately — a maximalist counterweight to Ka’s quiet penmanship. And not to lean too heavily on Armand Hammer references, but it also bears mentioning that “Instant Transfer” was on the group’s BLK LBL album out in March and has now been refashioned as an Elucid song featuring Woods. Pedantry aside, it slots right into one of the most abrasive (but not in a SoundCloud way), masterfully produced albums of any genre this year.
It’s also not for everybody. Even at 15 tracks, which feels slight in a year where Cowboy Carter, Cindy Lee, Mount Eerie and others have garnered so much acclaim, Revelator is an exhausting listen in the best sense of the term. Skip at your own risk: Far from hip-hop homework, Elucid’s Revelator is a port of call in this storm, a howling document from the edge, muons in which we are all tomographers.

Dylan Robert Jones ; Document direction
1. Name / location -Dylan Robert Jones / Queens NY
Tumblr media
2. What inspires you - I’m going to answer this with a story. A few years ago, I had zero interest in making visual art. I hadn’t made anything since high school and I certainly didn’t see myself as a visual artist, but one day I did this exercise where you write a letter from your inner child to your current self. You use your non-dominant hand so as to more easily tap into your repressed feelings. The writing was an extremely cathartic experience, but what was more interesting was that immediately after I had finished the writing, I created a doodle with my left hand of this distressed robot character and colored it in (see first image). It was evident that that drawing was a reflection of my world at that current moment. I then had the revelation that I didn’t have to try to convey anything with my work, that anything I made would be a symbolic expression of my emotional landscape and would be good in and of itself because of this. So what inspires me really is this nonverbal process of excavating and releasing hidden emotions through art.

3. Favorite song right now -I love u in me by Prince I Love U in Me

4. Medium of choice -Pens and colored pencils
Tumblr media
5. Goal with art -My goal is to eventually be able to make enough money through art and music that I don’t have to work full time at a draining job anymore.
Tumblr media
6. Who does it right - Bonobos, Norwegians, transition skaters, country singers, old cars, penguins, dancers, lucid dreams, old people, ghouls, state parks, graffiti artists, herbal teas, free online movies, pens, my singing teacher, farmers, friends, sand tray therapists, trees, Neanderthals, William Wonka, the beach boys, glass, blue collar workers, sobriety, turtles, seashells, oats.
Tumblr media
7. Is social media evil - No, but it can land anywhere on the spectrum between evil and good depending on the particular situation. Usually it’s pretty shitty but without it my life would have taken a totally different course. For instance, I met my fiance through social media 12 years ago when we were teenagers, so I’m grateful for it.
Tumblr media
8. Opinion on time - It’s scary as fuck, but one thing that comforts me is thinking about how all our differences will inevitably be swallowed by the ocean of time. What I mean by this is that in several hundred years time me and the person I hate will be seen as virtually one and the same.
Tumblr media
9. Favorite blog - All the blogs that just post photos of Lana Del Rey. Those are chill.

10. Thanks / shout outs -
Thanks Jacob for interviewing me!

Horatio Caine Hedacanons (AU-mix) [Part 1]
Tumblr media
Horatio Hates driving, being from NY he always hated it and dreads it every time. He got his license at 30 when he moved down to FL.
Grew up with a half black, half Dominican best friend named Carla (OC), Carla Dominguez. she lived in Spanish Harlem. He met at 4 years old at school and been inseparable ever since. She lives in Harlem and Her family owned a Jazz club her grandfather started in the 20s.
Her family to him was like a second family.
He also learned Spanish through her, but couldn't speak it. He could understand it though. He couldn't roll his ‘r’ or some reason. He finally learned when his best friend got him a book and tape set for Spanish when he was moving to Miami . Being surrounded by a lot of Spanish speakers turned him into a pro in a few short years.
Horatio loves music. His favorite genre is Latin music but he loves all of it. No matter what genre, if it’s good he’s listening to it. His best friend Carla (OC) excised h to the genre.
He would spend time with her and his friends playing, jumping rope or sometime hanging out in front of her parents club dancing and learning how to dance.
His son Kyle was surprised at his father’s taste in music. He has great taste and even some genres like Hip Hop, Pop, Latin Music that was really good and popular music. he didn't think someone his age would even like music form his generation.
Horatio doesn’t have causal sex. There is only. A hand full of women he was ever inmate with and those have all been serious committed relationships. He always knew his body and emotions were connected and the intamcy of sex. Which caused some women he was set up on dates to not see him anymore because he would only have sex when he’s good and ready and comfortable. even that mean hiding hands and kissing as well. part f had to due with his abusive childhood as well.
He didn’t lose his virginity until 22 years old with his first girlfriend. Rebecca Rhodes who was a social worker who has a similar past in childhood abuse like him.
Carla family need up adopting him and his brother after that tragic night of his parents dying.
Horatio has never had a one night stand. He always was very connected to is emotions and very aware of how sex is very intimate emotionally and physically. So it never appeared to him to have sex with strangers. having sex with people you don't know or even like, never appealed to him
His first girlfriend he got after college at the age of 22 and they moved in 6 months after dating eachother. They dated for 5 years that turned out to be the most chaotic 5 years of his life. she was beautiful blonde social worker and they bonded over their abusive past and childhood. They trauma bonded with each other and unfortunately. Horatio was on the receiving end of a lot of things flying towards his face and indulged in long passionate fights.
he finally lost his freckles at 20 years old. He hated them growing up because they always made him look young and was relived when they finally left his face.
His father didn't allow him to go to his friend Carol Birthday party at 15 for some reason. He always went , and never had there been a problem before but some reason he couldn't go to her Quincera.
October, 5 1975 On a cool night his parents were fighting again but this time it was bad and more volatile than anything before. Horatio had enough and was steaming the whole night , until his father was beating his mom and throwing her about the room and hoartio was watching the whole thing go down and was stewing an das his mom head the corner of the counter , Hoartio just saw red and attacked his dad. even though his after was 6'7 and a wide tree but the time everything calmed down and police were outside the door they found Horatio, His mother, Father all on the ground bruised cut and bleeding. His mother died from in the initial fall from hitting the counter. His father had deep knife cuts in the back and arms and side and Horatio had bruises and cuts on his body too.
Horatio and his brother were sent to an orphanage because they had no next of kin but his best forms family taught tooth and nail for a year to get custody of them.
Horatio had so many emotions bubbled he up he cried him self to sleep all night for two weeks straight. He also plagued with nightmares about the fight and what happened.
a few months later he was charged with murder but The judge at the time pushed the trail back until he finished school.
Horatio felt so bad and guilty about what happened and thus The whole ordeal inspired him to become a police officer. To help people and do something meaningful with his life.
His brother however was determined to leave New York for good. he worked really hard ins school and applied to Miami University which he got in and majored in criminal justice to become a police officer.
he moved from Queens and moved to the bronx to be as far away from his home as possible by the elevated train and wasn't bothered by it one bit because
He had his first girlfriend ever at 22 and was the first woman he slept with too.
Her name was Kailey Henderson . She was a beautiful blond woman 5’7 with blonde hair and blue eyes, in a bob. They both came from abusive homes and she was a child social worker in the city. They dated for 5 years but after a while problems became to rise up and both being so emotional they both fought and drugged, she often threw thing at his head, he never raised a hand towards her at all but he def matched her in an argument.she accused him alot and mis communication and hurt feelings where there didn't need to be any and just alot if tears and crying and yelling and making up but they realized they didn't know what they were doing and weren't right for eachother.
His Best friend/adoptive sister Carla got married and he became godfather to all of her kids.
Years later after he moved to FL, he had some therapy Horatio realized his faults in the relationship and felt so bad , he contacted her and apologized They met years after Horatio moved to Miami, after she was married and had grown children with one grandchild on the way, and gave a Huge bouquet of flowers and took her out o lunch and profusely apologized.
After this relationship, he didn't date for almost a decade. He was so traumatized by his last relationship he didn’t even bother
But years later, 2 years before he met Julia when he was ready his friend did set him up on blind date.
His life as an police officer was an amazing experience and rough but loved his team mates he worked with. he hate how big his uniform look on him because he was so naturally skinny, but he made alot of lasting friendships as an officer. his favorite time of year was the Parades. Puetorican/Dominican Day. he would get put on crowd control and he would be vigilant but he would enjoy his day as well. he'd be dancing, singing and eating food chatting with people in the street.
All of that changed with the last 5 years with a change in directors of the force and he often bucked heads with for years.
On his final assignment , he had to find a killer Walter Resden who was undercover in Florida and there met Julia. (Actual canon) He knew she was the one from their frist time they met. They ate for two weeks and its as the most intense two weeks ever. He wasn’t scared or guarded like he usually was in relationships, it was amazing. He believed everything she told him and meant everything she told him. But mysteriously weeks during their affair she up and disappeared. He never heard or seen her again. He never felt more heartbroken and confused.
After his failed mission with Walter Reseden, he was Philly and emotionally exhausted and after a heated exchanged with his new chief he got a “transfer” ( aka firing ) . He didn’t fight it, He needed a change of scenery not that he wanted it, but it proved to benefit him later on in life.
After 4 months recovering from his arm injury mostly but still in a sling.
He hated everything about Miami, it wasn’t ugly just unfamiliar and an unwanted move. He was emotionally a mess than he’d ever had been before.he was distant and moody He hardly made friends and had a slight chip on his shoulder.
He was happy he could see his brother and family again but he didn’t feel home in Miami and didn’t think he eve would.
His new Boss Al Humphries noticed this and offers support but somewhat forced Horatio to seek therapy,or else he’d fire him. Horatio relented but it was prob one of the what best things to happen to him. He was able to understand so much of his emotional bag he and trauma from his past and childhood. He never finished it thought, he’d only finish about 60% of the work done needed.
His job on the bomb squad also proved to be helpful Ina sense of you have to be calm and clear about what your doing. A lot less excitable than a detective but he didn’t mind. He need some calm at this point in his life.
Over the years Miami proved to have a lot of healings factors for Horatio. Like one: He used to swear a lot back in MY but now he doesn’t anymore. His friends joke the sand and surf just be mellowing him out.
He still had his moments of feeling vulnerable and guarded over himself but it’s less now. One unfortunate event one year as Lt, he was off duty with in his car after trying groceries looking at his phone , so wrapped up what e was doing he and not paying attention to a woman yelling at him from afar about something he doesn’t even remember now but and then she had the gal to come over and open his door , get in his personals space and yell at him , he never felt his rage boil up so fast and had he been a lesser man or even the man his father he would have punched her dead in the face but he didn’t he just cussed her out and closed his door and drove off.
He learned how to handle suprises better, due to abusive childhood, being suprises isn’t always a pleasant experience. One time for his birthday his friends from NY, and the NY crime lab , his brother and his family, all came down to surprise him and he stepped through the door pulled his him out on all of them but thank goodness he process quickly and quickly hid his weapon. Only Mac,Marisol and Ryan knew what happened , everyone else had no clue because it happened so quick and he turned around embarrassed but quickly laughing it off.
