It's a bit weird to suddenly go all royal, but this is a historical moment.
We haven't had a voluntary abdication in about 900 years. The last time was in 1146.

FROM PUBLIC MOURNING TO PUBLIC CELEBRATION ✨
—15 January 1972: Little under a day after her father, King Frederik IX, had died and she had become Denmark's first official female monarch, 31-year-old Margrethe II was proclaimed Queen from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace by Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag.
—14 January 2024: Little under an hour after his mother, Queen Margrethe II, had signed a declaration of her abdication at a Council of State – becoming the first Danish monarch in 878 years to do so – 55-year-old Frederik X was proclaimed King from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has chosen to abdicate from the Danish throne the 14th of January, after 52 years on the throne.
She told the whole kingdom of Denmark, and the rest of the world, live on television during her new year speech to the people.
There has not been a voluntary abdication in Denmark since the early medieval times (1100-1200)
The Queen has always said that she will sit on the throne until her last breath, which is why her abdication comes as a surprise to everyone.
Her son Crown Prince Frederik and his wife Crown Princess Mary will take over as King Frederik X and Queen Mary.
Thank you, your majesty, for all you have done for us and how you have always shown your love and respect to the Danish people. We look forward to seeing you hopefully enjoy your abdication and hopefully we will still see more of your incredible creative mind . We have trust in our new King and Queen as we already know that you have prepared them well for their new job.
Thank you ❤️

Queen Margrethe 2. of Denmark abdicates
This has nothing to with TMNT, but since I'm Danish, this is a big deal to me.
Last night, during her New Years speech, the queen officially said she abdicates, reason being her health and age. I fully understand and respect her decision, but I will miss my chain smoking, hotdog eating queen.
From the 14th of January 2024, Denmark's reigning monarchs will be King Frederik 10. along side his wife, the soon to be Queen Mary.
Long live the Queen in all her future endeavors, and long live the future King.

News : On December 31st 2023, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced during her New Year's speech that she will abdicate on January 14th 2024 in favour of her son, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark who will become King Frederik X of Denmark. His wife, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, will be Queen Mary of Denmark and their son, Prince Christian of Denmark, will be Crown Prince Christian of Denmark.
In her New Year's speech, The Queen said : “I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik.
Tonight, first of all, I want to say thank you. Thank you for the overwhelming warmth and support that I have received over the years. A thank you to the changing governments, with whom it has always been rewarding to work together, and to the Danish Parliament, which has always met me with confidence.
My thanks must go to all the many, many people who, at special events, as well as in everyday life, have surrounded me and my family with loving words and thoughts. It has made these years a series of gems.
The support and assistance that I have received over the years has been decisive for me being able to carry out my task. It is my hope that the new royal couple will be met with the same trust and affection that I have received.
They deserve it! Denmark deserves it!
So I will end my last New Year’s speech with the words I usually say:
GOD PRESERVE DENMARK
GOD BLESS YOU ALL” -December 31st 2023.

QUEEN MARGETHE II OF DENMARK ABDICATES
The world's only Queen regnant announced in her live broadcast New Year's Speech that she intends to abdicate in favour of her son, Frederik (who will become Frederik X of Denmark) on 14 January 2024 – the 52nd anniversary of her ascension to the throne.
In February this year I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me. Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future – whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation. I have decided that now is the right time. On 14th January, 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I will hand over the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik.

Three highlights from the Danish abdication and accession.
1: The Queen has officially abdicated. If you look closely at her Majesty in the end, you will notice how she actually starts crying before turning around and leaving the room for the last time after 52 years as monarch of Denmark.
2: The official proclamation by Mette Frederiksen, prime minister of Denmark. "Queen Margrethe has abdicated. Long live King Frederik X"
3: A small view of the many thousand Danes who came to watch, followed by a royal kiss from their majesties the king and Queen of Denmark.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Abdicates
We got some shocking news on New Year's Eve when Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced in her annual speech that she plans to abdicate in favor of her son, Crown Prince Frederik. It will take place on January 14th, which is the 52nd anniversary of her own accession to the throne in 1972. She is currently the longest reigning monarch in Europe and the only female monarch in the world.
Queen Margrethe has stated many times that she views her role as being for life and that she will not abdicate which is part of what makes this announcement so unexpected. She has had some health problems in the last few years and underwent back surgery last year that she says caused her to rethink some things.
In recent years more monarchs around the world have decided to abdicate as a form of retirement, passing the throne to their child who is younger and more capable of performing their duties. The Dutch have been doing this for several generations and I'm happy to see other monarchies adopting the practice. I know not everyone likes it but I prefer having the new monarch's accession be one of celebration and not because their beloved parent died. Queen Margrethe is a big reason I feel this way because I always think of her still mourning her father during her proclamation as Queen.
youtube
Denmark has one of the simplest forms of accession with the prime minister declaring the new monarch from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace. There are no grand events with tiaras but we could get an official portrait of the new king and queen.
For her proclamation, Queen Margrethe wore her wedding earrings and a ruby horseshoe brooch that was a gift from her father in 1953 when the constitution was changed to allow women to inherit the throne. I expect similarly sentimental jewelry to be worn this time around.
