𝓒𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓢𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓷
3rd POV
🌷Y/N stood still, the door slightly ajar, being cautious, focused on not being seen. Her breath hitched, her heart beating through her ears. Her knuckles turned white as she grasped the handle leading ti the boy. A loud silence fell upon everyone, the sudden downpour from being the only sound breaking the piercing silence.
🌺She looked at the guards standing besides the door, Y/N tilted her head to the side signaling for them to guard the main doors of the palace instead. She hesitantly held her knuckles above the door, afraid that maybe just maybe she would make the situation more worse than it already is. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, calming her nerves,p feeling her heart beat faster than normal. With a sigh, she opened the door to see the boys staring at her.
🌸Y/N looked at them, her eyes wandering around the room until she met eyes with Jimin. They stared at each other for a while, Jimin soon then ripped his gaze away from her, Y/N gulped wondering if he was mad at her. No, she knew he was mad at her. “I know you were eavesdropping.” Y/N gulped, looking down on shame and feeling her face heat up. Yoongi scoffed at her, pleased from how she cowered the moment she heard his voice. “Were you not taught not to listen to someone else’s conversation that doesn’t involve you?”
🌷Y/N scoffed, rolling her eyes at her husband, not giving a damn about his title. “Oh. But I’m sure I was involved considering you were talking about ME.” Yoongi walked away from his position, storming across the room towards her. Gripping her chin between his fingers, he tilted her head up, looking into her eyes and not minding their close proximity. “Now, why would you have a problem about my fellow allies and I talking about my beautiful wife? Or should I say my Empress?” Y/N’s eyes widened as Yoongi had confidently blurted out her secret.
🌺From the corner of her eyes she saw Jimin looking down, his knuckles turning white, figure taking a shaky deep breath. She felt her heart break for the vulnerable man, the vulnerable she can’t help but to love. Namjoon trailed where her gaze was and saw Jimin, breaking the silence, he clapped his hands. “Now, it is dark outside. The festival is today and the townspeople are getting ready. We should get going, ignore the problems for right now and celebrate. Yoongi, Jimin, and Y/N please stay behind. I need to speak to you privately.”
🌸Everyone else left, passing by Y/N offering her a small smile as they’ve come to find out a lot about her in a short amount of time. Taehyung stopped in front of Y/N with a harsh gaze, her looking down as he was still an emperor. Arms hugging her tight surprised her, realizing that the person was Taehyung, she hugged him back even though she had only met him. “I’m glad you’re my sister. If they cause you any problem just shout my name and Jin Hyung and I will rescue you, princess.” Y/N chuckled, letting each other go and separating ways.
🌷The door shut behind Y/N leaving her with her brother and two important people in her life. “Would you mind explaining what Yoongi meant when he called you his queen, Y/N?” Namjoon sat down on his seat, confused as to what was going on, confused as to why it felt like Jimin had to be part of this as well. Yoongi sat at the other of the long table, opposite of a Namjoon and Jimin, sighing as he already wanted this meeting to be over. Y/N looked at Yoongi, her eyes begging for help as she didn’t know whether or not to admit or deny Yoongi’s claim. “I was just joking around, Joon. Don’t take it too seriously.”
🌺Jimin scoffed at the words that came out of Yoongi’s mouth. “That’s bullshit, Yoongi Hyung. You know that.” Yoongi glared at him, crossing his arms, amused at the younger one’s response. “What bullshit, Jimin? We’ve known each other our whole lives. You know me, a jokester. Why can’t you take a joke? Were you actually scared I took your supposed woman? Weren’t you the one begging to fuck one of my whores when you came to my palace a couple days ago? A specific whore at that...Eunhye? Was it?” Jimin froze in his spot, his gaze now softer, filled with pity, focusing on Y/N and saw how her mouth was slightly ajar, probably due to the shock of hearing what Jimin had been doing.
🌸Namjoon sighed as his two best friends were arguing over something irrelevant. His gaze went to Y/N as the two other men continued to bicker back and forth, cursing each other out. Namjoon approached Y/N and put his hand on top of her shoulders making Y/N flinch. She looked at her supposed brother with saddened eyes, smiling bitterly at him she decided not to say anything fearing that she will break down the moment she opens her mouth.
🌷Namjoon took her hand and dragged her out of the room no longer caring for the two imbeciles he both considered best friends. Y/N mindlessly followed also no longer wanting to be in the same room with Jimin and Yoongi. After being dragged for a few minutes, she suddenly bumped into Namjoon’s back startling her in the process. She looked up only to see that he took her to the throne room. Y/N looked at him confused as to why he had brought her here out of all places and instead of celebrating the festival
🌺Namjoon looked at her and gestured for her to go in first. Fire suddenly illuminated the thrown room, the hallway getting brighter and brighter as the guards lit up the torches. Getting to the last to pair of torches, three thrones emerged from the dark, one that being bigger than the other two. “Appa...uh gave me his thrown. Though, I don’t know why. I thought that his throne would best suit Jin Hyung. However, even Jin Hyun didn’t want it, he told me that it was mine and always was.” Y/N looked at him and smiled, chuckling lightly. “Hey! What do you mean you don’t know! You’ve always been a leader, Joon. Ever since we were kids, you always were. Every time the three of us would go on an adventure, you would lead us to places. Not even the guards could do that so they had to follow you too!” Namjoon laughed loudly, remembering their antics as children, reminiscing the good memories.
🌸He remembered how they would always meet up, at one point he couldn’t hide it from his dad, excitedly telling him of his newly found friend, his reaction when he put the puzzle pieces together that you were their sister. “You’re going to have your thrown up there in a couple days. I’ve already told the blacksmiths to design you a thrown. That is if you’d like to stay here, my dear sister.” Y/N didn’t know what to answer. She had always known that she was welcomed in this kingdom, in the palace, she even had her own chambers. But to be an princess was something she was not ready for
🌷”Is there something wrong, Y/N?” Namjoon looked at her in worry, his gaze following hers. She was staring at the gigantic family portrait hung up above the thrones. Her father’s and her brothers’ individual portraits along with the portraits of past Kim emperors. “Why is your mom’s portrait not there?” Namjoon furrowed his eyebrows, realizing she was trying to avoid his question. “Don’t avoid the question, Y/N. Does it have something to do with what Yoongi had ‘jokingly’ mentioned back there? Are you really an Empress now?” Y/N seethed in anger at the mention of the bastard’s name. “No! I am merely a concubine.”
🌺Namjoon shook his head knowing his sister didn’t understand the full picture. “Y/N, you’re not a commoner. You are a princess. When an Emperor marries a royal, they become an Empress ruling his kingdom with him until their death, just like the sayings in the vows.” Namjoon walked up to his throne, tracing it with his fingertips, remembering looking up at his dad from his lap as a child whenever he sat down to deal with problems. “You can choose to stay here, while also being an Empress for the Min Empire and as a princess for the Kim Empire or you can choose to stay in the Min Empire. Either way, it’s a win-win situation as you do not lose any of your titles. The decision is yours.” Y/N felt as if the world was crumbling beneath her, so much has had happened all at once
🌸”But I don’t love Yoongi. I love Jimin. I don’t want to live in an empire with someone I do not love. I do not want to rule a kingdom where I feel like I don’t belong. I want to break my oath to Yoongi. I want to be with Jimin” Namjoon’s eyes widened at his sisters sudden statement. His eyes wandering around to see if any government officials were present. “Are you insane? Y/N, once you oath yourself to someone you cannot, and I repeat, cannot break it. If you publicly announced that you want to break the oath because you’re in love with someone else it will leave you headless.” Y/N wish he said the exact opposite, was Jimin worth it?
🌷”I know what you’re thinking, Y/N. I want you to listen. Jimin isn’t the one for you and-“ Y/N interrupted him, completely annoyed with everyone has been saying around her.
“How do you know what’s best for me?! Does EVERYONE happen to know what’s best for me except for myself?! I love Jimin and you can’t change-“
“He’s cheated on you multiple times, Y/N!”
Y/N froze in her spot, her mouth ajar, eyed as wide as saucers, stuttering, trying to process everything. Everything that happens and is happening.
🌺”No. Jimin told me he loved me. I may be pathed to Yoongi but Jimin is the one who owns my heart.” Namjoon sighed, rolling his eyes at Y/N who had always been hard-headed. “Jimin...I don’t know if he told you or if you’re aware at least...Jimin has a whore for every empire. Yoongi’s, ours, Hosoek’s, and Jungkook’s. You’re not the only woman beside his mom in his life.” Y/N couldn’t understand, well, she refused to listen and understand. He let his words go in one ear and out the other. “Yoongi..., he is a good man, Y/N. Don’t let rumors of him mess up your perspective of him. For Jimin, as much as I consider him my brother, he’s only been playing you this whole time. I’m sorry. I know you love him. We’ve known for a long while that you two were involved with each other. But now that the announcement that you and Yoongi are married, it can’t continue. I will make sure Jimin is not within 6 feet of you.”
🌸Y/N’s uneven breathing was heard throughout the massive room, her knees giving up on her eventually collapsing and her sobs became more loud and clear. Her nails forming crescents on the palm on her hands on how tight her fist was. She didn’t mind the pain, the pain that hurt the most was the heart break. She shook her head vigorously, denying her brother’s claims. “No brother would say that to me. No brother would make up lies just for her to stay away from someone she loves.”
🌷Namjoon sighed again, confused as to why his sister won’t believe him. “If you think I’m lying to you just to make you stay with Yoongi and leave Jimin then...then that’s up to you. I’ll leave you to talk with the government officials. If they ever mention you, I’ll say that you speak for yourself because clearly I can’t speak for you. I won’t ever speak for you ever again. You’re an Empress now, Y/N, whether or not you want to be. This was your destiny. Now let’s walk on our own paths because now you have your own that you want to walk by yourself in.”
“No, wait, Namjoon-“
“I presume I will see you at the festival, Princess Y/N. If not, good night.”
🌺When the door closed she didn’t run off after her brother even though she knew she was in the wrong. But she couldn’t control her feelings. She hated him. She felt more immense hatred for Yoongi. She hated herself and she hated Jimin. But she hated her Emperor more. She looked at the portrait of her dad, sitting in his thrown in his hanbok with a smile on his face, the only emperor who had a smile on his face in their royal portrait. “I’m sorry,...dad. I feel I’ve already failed you.”
—————————-
Y/N walked out of the frown room and out into the town considering no one knew her title she aimlessly wandered around. Eventually stumbling upon the seven emperors also aimlessly walking around with guards nearby, everyone making way for them. Y/N hid in the crowd as they stood in a line, the crowd gathering in front of the. Her eyes searched for a Jimin only for it to seem like he was out of this world. Y/N felt love and hatred towards him at the moment, to think someone had actually fooled her and used her.
🌷The General of the Royal Army’s booming voice hushed the voices amongst the crowd. “Today, we would like to make an announcement concerning all empires.” The general looked at Namjoon, receiving a nod from him and stepping up.
“These last few days have been very challenging for the allied Emperors. However, do not worry as we are trying our best to prepare for this altercation. No, it is not war, however, that doesn’t mean that this will be dealt with peace either. Along with that, my brothers and I have found news ourselves.” Silence fell amongst the crowd waiting for their Emperor to finish his speech. Y/N stood in the crowd also intrigued by what news he was going to announce.
“I’d like for us to introduce you to Empress Y/N of the Min Empire, sister to the the Three Kim Emperors.”

THIRD P.O.V :
The small group of people in the courtyard gathered around the open casket, the shadows from the setting sun casting eerie shadows over Hyeonsik's sickly pale face. The queen stood beside it and wept silently, Jaehyun standing just as next to her. The man almost towered over her as he stared at the ground while the ceremony commenced.
Hakyeong stood only a few people away, similarly stanced with tears in her eyes. It was a sad atmosphere, the one that had blanketed itself over the still courtyard. The only sounds to be heard were the quiet but peaceful sounds water and the soft speech of the clergy, who was trying his best to put all the minds there to an easy rest. Yet, nobody could feel that way, their thoughts empty and bodies too tense to even think.
"I'd like to take a few moments of silence to respect the man Jung Hyeonsik was, and who he will be after today," The clergy said this in a hushed voice, rising a few sniffles from the crowd.
It wasn't like he needed to say it, the courtyard already being almost as silent as it could be. But, with no one talking, you could truly hear that someone had passed.
—
HAKYEONG :
My mind kept unintentionally replaying the conversation I'd had with Jaehyun. It was stamped into my brain even as I exchanged words with the queen, as I paced around the courtyard, and as I walked back inside later that night.
I felt overwhelmed, with all of the development. I felt like nothing ever happened around the castle anymore, very contradictory to now.
That was the first time that I'd spoken to Jaehyun in years. Though it didn't feel like it had exactly lived up to my imagination, I knew it was definitely nothing to complain over. The possibility of an actual conversation had plagued my thoughts for years, after all. It was the reputable icing on the cake, the lining to my wrapping, the thing that I thought would close all of my other conclusions and declare them finished for good.
But, I felt like I was left unfinished anyway, and definitely expecting a little more than a 'how are you?', even in that situation. But, I knew I was probably being dramatic, so I decided to let it go and just get ready to go out on my night shift. It was a relatively new thing to me, getting the night shift. I'd been placed there only shortly after my interview with the supervisor and was forced to adapt to the routine quicker than I would have liked.
Though I didn't like it and could even admit that it scared me a little, I had no place to complain outright. It pained me to say it, but I was lucky enough to have this position as a woman. So, there was nothing I could say that would convey my feelings correctly but also fly past the ears of the officials.
"Hakyeong?"
I was pulled from my trance as I looked up to see Eunhye standing in the doorway of our dorm room, her confused expression illuminated faintly by the small lamp in the corner of the room.
I shifted uncomfortably in a sitting position on top of my bed sheets, suddenly filled with similar confusion. "Yes..?"
"What are you doing?" She looked at the clock behind me, and at that point, I already knew what she was going to say.
"I was put on a night shift," I answered, filling in the blanks for her as she finally came in, giving me a confused look as she shut the door behind her
"What? Why? Aren't you usually the noon shift?" She asked, sitting down on her bed across from mine.
I shrugged, not knowing what to say. "Yeah, usually,"
"You better not have taken it yourself. If so, I swear to-"
I laughed and shook my head, interrupting, "God no, Eunhye. I'd rather eat that same cafeteria soup for a millennial than do the night shift. Especially now,"
"Good, at least you didn't willingly take it," She said, nodding to herself as if I wasn't there.
"Okay, Eunhye," I gave her an amused look, making her raise a brow. "I've gotta go. See you at midnight?"
She nodded and smiled "Way too late, but yeah. I'll probably be up and waiting,"
I returned her smile, standing up. "Good,"
—
I did not get back at midnight.
Even though I felt bad for leaving my best friend wondering, and maybe worried, I didn't really regret going back late. Even though the dark halls terrified me, I found myself walking them. I knew it wasn't safe even normally to do it, but with all of the thoughts swirling in my head, I needed a way to think that wasn't staring up at a ceiling.
It was comforting to see a familiar face every hallway or so, clad in iron suits and half-asleep expressions. I was actually envious of it, their exhaustion. But, I know they didn't notice me when I walked past, and I was grateful when they said nothing.
The castle was something like a big hexagon, and because it wasn't a lengthy trip, it was very easy to walk in a full circle. So for a while, I walked it alone, hand in hand with my thoughts for a good time. And I wasn't pulled out of them until I found myself in a certain hallway, interrupted by the faint sound of voices.
"Send them my regards to their concerns, but tell them that nothing they're doing right now is helping solve my brother's murder,"
The voice I heard almost made me stop in my tracks. It was almost 2 in the morning, the last thing I had expected to hear was someone else up. I tried to continue my walk and ignore the voices, but what he said next almost stopped me in my tracks.
"I'm tired of waking up in the morning and hearing nothing about it but old gossip. Fuck, I hate being without him, it's not-" The voice stopped, saying something else so quietly that I couldn't hear.
If I wasn't tired before, I was wide awake now. But, my morality seemed to kick in and throw my curiosity to the back of my mind, making me clear my throat softly and continue my walk. I knew it wasn't my place to eavesdrop, especially on Jaehyun. So, I kept my pace, walking cleanly past the open door and just praying that they hadn't seen or heard me.
The next morning, I woke up almost completely at noon, just before my next shift. I'd gotten back around 2:30 in the morning. And though I'd definitely had later nights, this one had left me oddly exhausted. So much, that when I stumbled out for my shift, I almost didn't notice the whispers.
"Apparently, they've finally found a suspect for the prince's murder,"
This didn't register in my mind at first, the sentence going in one ear and slipping out the other as I walked past, the clicking of my shoes on the floor doing little to wake me up. But, as soon as it did, I was long past the pair who had been gossiping.
All I could do was smile to myself as I wandered to my position, happy that they had finally done some work. Maybe now we wouldn't have to be so wary.
"Miss?"
I turned to see the same knight from the other day standing in front of me, his crimson accented uniform and smooth voice familiar. It was slightly strange that I was seeing him again, but I knew it wasn't something to dwell on when I didn't even know who he was. His face was still covered by a helmet of material similar to his armour, leaving me to wonder more.
"You're Lee Hakyeong, is that right?" He asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.
I nodded, my brows knitting. "Is this about Hyeokjae? I've heard they found someone,"
I noticed his eyes narrow through the slit in his helmet. "Yes, I suppose that's true. I need you to come with me,"
"I don't remember being asked somewhere," I told him, my eyes wandering to the ground, in the spot where I was supposed to be.
He just gave me an appreciative nod. "I'm aware. But your shift master has already been informed that you'll be absent for today,"
"Oh," I trailed off, not knowing what to say. "Okay, then. I'll come with you,"
He turned around without another word, making me more confused as the minutes passed. When we stopped in front of the RS's office the second time in the last two days, I assumed that whatever this was about, it must've been related Hyeokjae.
"Have a good day, Miss," He told me, dipping his head in a bow before walking away.
I was left to stare back at him, the thoughts of his appearance coming up again. There were hundreds of knights, and he'd somehow managed to come to my aid twice. It was weird, and knowing the way things worked around here, it probably wasn't a coincidence. But, seeing as it wasn't something that really held much significance at the moment, I decided to let it go.
I turned to the door and tried to quickly asses whether or not I should be worried. But, when I couldn't decide what to feel, I just ended up knocking, my chest sinking slightly at the quiet 'come in'.
When I opened the door, the supervisor gave me an easy smile, almost as if he was happy to see me. I couldn't say I felt the same.
"Hakyeong, please sit down," he motioned to the seat in front of him, the plain piece of furniture looking a little more menacing then it had the day before.
I nodded, letting out a nervous laugh as I did what I was told.
"Hakyeong," he started again, clasping his hands on top of the desk. "Why didn't you tell the truth?"
I looked up at met his eyes with a frown. I was confused yet again. "What do you mean?"
"You told me that you were sleeping, but I was told you were seen in his hallway the night of," He leaned forward with a penalising look, making my mind whirl.
"No, that's not right," I shook my head, meeting his eyes. "I was asleep. I was let off at 11 and sleeping by 12. My roommate woke me up when there were people in the hall,"
"I'm afraid that isn't enough now, Hakyeong,"
My brows furrowed, and at this point, I was panicking a bit. I felt like all my important words were stuck in my chest as I let out softly, "What do you mean? Why is that suddenly not enough?"
I could tell that he didn't want the conversation to drag on any longer than it had to.
"I don't know. But right now, you're the only piece of evidence that's turned up in days," he said, the sentence doing little to make me feel better.
"No," I felt a storm of emotion whirring up in my chest. This was not what I had expected.
"There's a mistake. I really was sleeping, please believe me,"
"I'm sorry, Hakyeong. I don't have any choice. You've been relieved of your shifts for today, so please go back to your dorm and await instructions."
"But, sir—"
"Have a nice day, Hakyeong.”

Most Important>> Taehyun, You
This was requested by @lostheretics . Sorry sweet for taking so long. I hope you will like this one.
It’s okay to be by his side, you told yourself.
But as the time passed, as you watched him drift away from you, it became harder for you to stay any longer. It became harder to keep your feelings to yourself.
Hanging out with another woman lately, talking to her almost every day, you feared that man you love was leaving you and you had not even confessed yet.
That was why you were standing behind him as Taehyun was working in his studio. Your heart was beating so fast, and you squeezed your hands together, trying to get rid of the shaking vibe inside of you.
Let’s not regret this. You told yourself.
“What is it?” Taehyun said, still working on his computer, adjusting notes together and beats. “You have been standing there for ten minutes without saying anything.”
“Taehyun… hmm… I know that I should not say that. But I want to say it anyway… Taehyun…”
Spinning around with his chair, Taehyun turned fully to meet your eyes and words seemed to stick in your throat. “What is it? I’m listening.”
“I like you.” You said it in a faint voice, looking down at your feet. “I like you.” You looked up at your heart dropped.
You expected something like this to happen, so why were you so disappointed? Why were you so hurt? You thought it would be easier, but this hurt like hell.
Taehyun was biting his lips, his expression was not good as if it was the last thing he wanted to hear. Running his hands into his long locket, he sighed, tilting his downwards.
He hated it. He did not like your confession. He was going to…
“I’m sorry, Y/N. But you know that I like Eunhye. Plus…” He sighed, not knowing what to say. “Plus, you… you are a precious person to me, so don’t do that. Don’t fall for me. Ever.”
You tried to smile. You told yourself to be cool about it that you knew he was going to reject you, but it was harder than you thought. You could not smile and tears started to blur your eyes and you hated yourself for looking pathetic in front of Taehyun.
“I know…” Your voice cracked, as you were fighting for a smile. “I know that well… that you like Eunhye. I… I just wanted to make my feelings clear.”
Pressing his lips together, Taehyun frowned. If anyone tears was an inspiration for him to write good songs, your tears were breaking him down. He was surprised when a tear slipped down your cheek, his heart clenched and he did not know what to do. He made you cry.
“Y/N”
A quick forced smile was placed over your face as you said, “I’ll go now.”
“Wait, Y/N.” But it was too late you were already gone.
~~
He defiantly liked Eunhye but his mind was full of your crying face. It bothered him the whole day along that he could not write down a word.
Three days passed and there was no news from you. When he tried to call you, he could not. He always remembered how hurt you looked and it was because of him.
He always hated your boyfriends for breaking your heart. He wished he could do anything to drive the pain away, yet he ended up hurting you as well. But it was true. He liked Eunhye.
“What is wrong with?” Taehyun looked up, confused at first. But then realized where he was.
He asked Eunhye for a coffee, trying to get closer to her as always. But somehow it felt strange this time.
“Nothing.” He smiled, sipping his coffee. “How was your day?”
"I have talked about my day all this time, Taehyun. You weren’t listening right?” Eunhye rolled her eyes.
“Really?” He gave her a nervous smile.
“What bothers you?”
“Nothing really.” He sipped his coffee again, looking away.
Why was he acting like this?
Flashback
“What is wrong, Taehyun?” You crawled and sat beside him on the side of the river. “You look so down.”
“Eunhye rejected me.” He sighed, tilted his head downward.
“Deserves you right for stealing my chocolate.”
“Yeah, that’s mean.”
You scoffed and rolled your eyes. “You are the mean one. How could you eat my chocolate?”
“God it’s just a chocolate.”
You raised your eyebrow at him. He knew well how much you liked chocolate.
“Fine, I will buy you another one.”
Smiling, you through your arms around his shoulders, patting his head. “That’s my pretty dog.”
“Did you just call me a dog?”
“Well, dogs are cute. Don’t you think.” You shrugged teasing him.
“Why can’t I win over you? Seriously.” He said, frustrated, but then a smile placed over his face.
“At least you are smiling now.”
You were the one who made him smile a lot.
End of flashback.
Suddenly he wondered if you were doing well. It was the first time not to hear from you for days. His heart always settled down when he knew you were okay.
“It’s because you are my best friend.” He’d once told you. “I feel responsible for you.”
“You are my best friend, not my father, Taehyun.” You’d told him, rolling your eyes.
“Taehyun, I need to go now,” Eunhye said, collecting her stuff.
“Already?”
“We have been sitting for two hours and you did not say a word. I even ordered two times already. What is really wrong with you today?” She sounded annoyed and frustrated.
“Look at you being all dramatic.” You would have said in a situation like this, laughing your heart out, enjoying the fun of teasing him. “Taehyun the drama queen.”
Damn. He thought. Why am I thinking about her right now?
“I’m sorry, Eunhye.”
Putting her bag over her shoulder, she shrugged. “No need to apologize.”
“Would like me to drop you off?”
“It is okay.” She was about to turn to leave, but stopped and looked at Taehyun again. “Ah, right. Tomorrow I will have my birthday party.”
Frowning Taehyun checked the calendar on his phone. “But your birthday is next week?”
“My best friend will not be here next week and I want her to be there. I shall see you there.”
“Yeah, of course.” However, something clicked in Taehyun’s mind made him change his mind. “Actually, I can’t attend. I’m sorry”
“Why?” Her face dropped.
“It’s someone else birthday tomorrow. And I can’t miss it. I’m so sorry.”
“Is that person really that important that you will not come to my party?”
Was she more important than Eunhye?
Taehyun found himself, saying yes, so many times in his mind. He never missed your birthday, and he could not do that.
He loved it to watch you grow up with him, being by his side, support him and make fun of him. He missed you. Three days, yet he was dying to see you.
“I’m sorry.” He said.
“Fine.” Eunhye sighed. “See you then.”
Nodding, he watched Eunhye until she walked out of the cafe.
But all he was thinking about: Is that really it between the two of you?
His hand reached quickly for his phone as he ran out of the cafe. He needed to see you.
Ring… ring…
Would you pick up?
Ring… ring…
“Ah.” His face lit up.
“Y/N? Where are you?”
“Home.” Your answer was short, and your voice did not sound good at all.
“What is wrong?” Taehyun stopped, and his heart dropped.
“I am…” You coughed, “I’m fine.”
“Yah. You are not fine. I’m coming over.”
“Taehyun, don’t bother-” but it was too late, Taehyun cut the call and ran as fast as he could.
~~
“Look at you.” Taehyun frowned, as he helped you to your bed. When he arrived, he found you lying down on the couch, with medicine everywhere around you. You looked exhausted and so weak. It broke his heart as he knew that you were like this because of him. “I told you to take care of yourself.”
Adjusting the pillow under your head, you looked at him and gave him a small smile. “I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?” Taehyun removed a hair strand away from your face as he sat on the edge of the bed beside you.
“You were with Eunhye, right?”
Taehyun nodded, looking away as he removed his hand away from you. “Yes.”
“See, that’s why I am apologizing. You had to come all the way here.”
“It’s not like this. I’m the one who called you, plus she left before I call you.”
“Why did you call me?”
Taehyun looked back at you. You could tell that he was wondering himself why he called you as his eyes kept roaming around until he met your eyes again. Biting his lower lip, he said, “Because someone decided not to talk to me at all.”
You half smiled, rolling your eyes. It was the best of you changed this awkward situation and made fans of him, right? But whatever you said sounded forced. “It’s just Three days, Taehyun. You went on tours longer than that and we could not talk to.”
Sighing, Taehyun titled his head downwards. “But that time… you didn’t leave with tears in your eyes.” Looking up at you, you could see the hurt in his eyes. An expression that you could not tell the meaning behind it. “That time you didn’t leave after confessing your feelings.”
“I thought my feelings were obvious. Everyone knows I’m in love with you.”
Taehyun held his head with both hands as he sank his head deeper between his shoulders. “I’m must be an idiot.”
“Now, you know.” A sigh skipped your mouth as you looked at the ceiling, “But it is not like you will like me back.”
“Why did you not tell me that you are sick?” Taehyun said, checking your forehead again, probably not hearing what you had said. “I’m really mad because you did not tell me.”
“I didn’t want to bother you.” You said, removing his hand from your forehead. It felt weird to be touched by him. You wanted to touch him badly, to let him touch you, but it felt wrong.
“But I don’t mind. It never bothered me”
“No. You should not care about me for the time being, Taehyun. At least until I get rid of my feelings for you.”
“Y/N” His eyes widened in shock.
“Can you leave me alone? I’m okay now.” You said, shifting your body to the side. “Thank you for everything.”
“Why does it…” Taehyun gulped hard. He never once imagined that you would ask him to leave, or not to care about you. It felt as if you were… “Why does it feel like you are breaking up with me?”
“We are not together to break up with you.”
“Y/N I’m not joking.”
After a moment of silence, you finally said. “We have been best friends for too long. It’s my fault for falling for you and destroying everything. I’m sorry Taehyun. But you do not have to mind me. Just give me a little time to go back to Y/N you know. I’ll make sure to get rid of my feelings for you.”
“But…”
“I know… I know it had been bothering you. But it’s my problem.” You pulled the blanket over your head as you said, “I’m sorry I can’t walk you to the door, Taehyun.”
Feeling numb, your words hurt more than anything. Why are you acting like this? You do not have to get rid of your feelings. He wanted to say that so badly. But he could not. He had Eunhye after. It would be bad if he still wanted you by his side. He could not be selfish.
“Fine,” Taehyun said, nodding. “I will let you rest, Y/N…” He walked to the door before turning around and saw you shifting beneath the blanket. “At least call me. Goodbye.”
At like that he left and closed the door behind him.
Underneath the blanket, you removed your hand from your lips as a sob skipped your mouth. How many times did you need to let go of him?

—
HAKYEONG :
It was around noon now, around an hour after a meeting was called. It was kept mostly a secret, what was discussed, but nonetheless, word spread quickly. Or more accurately, rumours spread quickly. Some said the meeting was called to discuss the repetitive meals, while others said that it was a debate on whether or not they were going to go on with the coronation.
I personally didn't believe either, neither of them really settling correctly in me.
I was off-duty for most of the day today, surprisingly. But, I didn't have much to do, so, against my better judgement, I went out and wandered around for a few hours. I even contemplated visiting home for a little, considering the short distance. But, somehow, I ended up in the courtyard again.
I sat down on the same marble bench, next to the patches of white gardenias and yellow tulips. And for a while, I tried to bask in the indifferent atmosphere, trying my best to clear my mind of everything, most of all Hyeonsik and Jaehyun. I forced my heartbeat into something resembling a calm rhythm until the deep feeling in my chest became bearable.
Time has a funny way of turning to mush in the courtyard, minutes stretching as long as days, weeks shortening to the length of a few mere seconds. Time was like a piece of wet clay beneath my fingertips, growing longer and longer, until it snapped suddenly, without warning.
"Hakyeong?"
My glazed-over eyes come back into focus just in time to see Eunhye standing there, visibly out of breath.
My brows knitted together in confusion as I asked, "Is something wrong?"
She took a quick breath before she started, her words coming out slightly choked. "There's a letter in our dorm room, and I opened it-"
"Woah, slow down, what was in our dorm room?"
"A letter," She said, her voice flatter as she cleared her throat.
"A letter? Did you open it?"
She nodded, handing me a piece of paper sealed with a yellow ribbon that I recognised well.
'Hakyeong, would it please you to help me wrap some invitations for the ball?' The queen had asked me this once when I was young, around 10, I believe.
I remember giddily accepting, heavily flattered that she would trust me to help her do something so important. I had sat down at a table next to her, bouncing happily on the velvety pillow being used as an impromptu booster.
When I had first come back to the castle with Jaehyun, I was 8 years old. And at that time, the girl dressed in her favourite white skirt and a comically pink blouse wasn't aware of what that meant, and how much would stem from that day. Based on introductions alone, I remember liking his parents a lot, his father kind and with a smile that reminded me of his. His mother had always especially been nice to me, loosely calling me the 'daughter I never had' on occasion.
And, oh, I basked in it.
I loved having someone that felt like my mother, someone that fit around the image of my own from my even younger years. Something who not even Mrs Nakamoto, someone I regularly referred to as 'mom', could fill.
I remember her smile as I asked if she really wanted me to help with such an important job, 'Of course I want you to, who else would I pick?'
I just giggled as she laughed along, handing me a thin yellow ribbon. 'I need you to roll the papers up and tie them shut. Can you do that?'
I remember nodding, following her instructions with a smile stretched across my youthful lips. When I had held up the first completed, she smiled as I waved it in my hand, the yellow ribbon going with it.
She loved to put the colour yellow on everything possible, I'd figured. The cheery colour was like the ground's unofficial main accent. It was in flowers, in paintings on the walls, in her dresses, every little spot you could think of had it. Because of this, it was Hyeonsik's absolute favourite colour. Even before I knew him well, I always saw a yellow handkerchief hanging out of his pocket.
Now, holding a similarly rolled paper with the familliar yellow ribbon tied around it, I couldn't believe my eyes. I unrolled it quickly, sticking the mundane ribbon in my pocket as I skimmed through it. There were minutes of silence as my eyes went over the page, my heart sinking deeper and deeper into my chest with each word. When I looked up, I felt numb.
It was Hyeonsik's burial.
—
I saw ten people, fifteen at most when I walked out to the courtyard again later that evening. The sun was setting appropriately, giving everything the golden hue that Hyeonsik prized so much.
The timing was a sweet touch.
The burial itself looked to be a private thing, which I did understand, but I still didn't know why they were so hellbent on keeping everything from the public. It had been almost a week since, and they had to do something eventually. But, I knew it wasn't my concern.
The setting of the burial itself made the normally beautiful space look ethereally sad. The flowers waved rhythmically in the wind as their shadows cast down on the walks below them.
From where I was walking in, I could make out the casket, laying open in a hole surrounded by flowers. It was a pain to think that I would have to look at his face like that, but I continued my steps nonetheless, trying my best to look unfazed.
But when I stopped at a seat, my expression melted. It hit me hard then;
Hyeonsik is gone.
I sunk down into the seat at that moment, too caught up in my feelings to see someone heading towards me. They were dressed in a simple black suit, a small piece of yellow fabric pinned to their lapel. I recognised it almost immediately in the corner of my eye as a piece of Hyeonsik's handkerchief, but was left to wonder who in the world would have that.
At least, until they stopped next to me.
I looked up to see the man sitting down next to me, his figure slightly tense as he did. At first, I didn't know what to say, the random but obviously calculated action making my words stick in my throat.
"Jaehyun,"
I looked over at him, his lips tugging up in a small smile. "Hi, Hakyeong. How have you been?"
My chest sunk even further at his formal tone.
"I've been alright," I nodded, making him raise a brow, but ultimately look away and say nothing.
"How have you been?" I asked, straightening up as he looked back over. "I assume it's different,"
He just nodded, avoiding my eyes as he almost perfectly mirrored my response.
"I'm sorry," I said this after a minute of silence, making him meet my eyes once again. "I thought I would know what to say,"
He shook his head and gave me a small smile. "I understand. It's not exactly normal circumstances,"
And, there it was again. There was something that I should say to him, but I let it hang in the air, not fully grasping the courage to pluck it down. So, I didn't reply
"Hey, take care of yourself, okay? Hopefully the next time we talk it'll be more casual," He sighed out, his lips tugging up in another gentle smile as he stood.
I nodded. “Yeah, let’s promise it’ll be a little happier, too, okay?”
He gave me a small nod as to convey his agreement. He had just begun to walk away before turning back and adding something else quietly. So quiet that if I weren't listening, I probably wouldn't have heard. "And, Hakyeong, just know that it's not healthy to hold in tears."
Words were frozen in my mouth, but before I could reply, he turned on his heel once again. I let a pained smile rise to my lips.
I guess some things don't change.
