Chapter One | Chapter Three
Acting Up
That’s just the Colonel, sweetheart! Try harder next time, m’kay?
Try harder?
Like he wasn’t some impassable brick wall of a man…alien…whatever…that she had absolutely zero common ground with?
Nope. Just try harder.
Sure thing, boss.
Luckily, her other patients were gradually warming up to her. Wainfleet was surprisingly forthcoming, after he figured out that Tibbs wasn’t the only one who liked comic books. Just a big kid with a gun. Absolutely nothing to dissect there.
Zdinarsk had shyly asked for help managing her braid, then invited Ellie to “come hang” with her and the other recoms sometime, whatever that meant.
It was only Quaritch who was being deliberately obtuse.
But Ellie had another problem. She was the talk of Bridgehead. Sure, for the reason that the Colonel was her new patient. And for the bigger issue that somebody had blabbed about her missing arm. Now there were stares and sly sideways looks wherever she went. She couldn’t stand the whispering. It made her mad as all Hell that she was no longer invisible. That everybody knew her by sight and reputation, for her handicap.
I am not a victim. I am a survivor.
The mantra her very own ‘shrink’ had given her as armour. Over and over and over in her head.
Session Two did not get off to a good start. She’d have bet her next paycheque on Quaritch ditching her couch.
In fact, he’d shown up early. She was the one who was late by being on time.
Jeez, she couldn’t stand him. She was going to be extremely unprofessional in 3…2…1…
“Off the record, before we begin-“ Ellie spoke up as she lowered herself into her human-sized chair. “Can I have a word with you?”
“Sure thing, shrink-wrap.”
”Stop-“ She grumbled and rubbed her temples. “Hm. Kindly refrain from calling me that, please.”
“Since you asked nicely.”
Ellie sighed with relief. “Thank you.”
“I’ll save it for special occasions.”
She groaned out loud.
“And bank holidays.”
“You-…” Ellie faltered before regaining her rhythm and setting her mouth in a firm line. “Ugh, whatever.”
Quaritch was looking at her expectantly.
“So-“ She demanded. “Who’d you tell about my arm?!”
“Say what now?” He seemed genuinely surprised.
“People have been talking about me behind my back, since our last session.” She complained. “I don’t appreciate that. Not one bit.”
“Hey there-“ He held up a hand to hush her. ”I ain’t said shit about your rusty-ass arm!”
She regarded him suspiciously. His expression was genuine enough. ”Really?”
“Not a word.” The Colonel actually looked offended. “What, you think you’re the first handicap I’ve worked with?”
Of course she wasn’t. There was another.
“You ain’t special.” He huffed. “So you done actin’ up? Or what?”
“Well, somebody said something.” Ellie muttered.
“Good thing I’m not paying for your so-called help, ‘cause so far: not impressed. Un-pro-fess-io-nal.” He emphasised each syllable, making her cower down in embarrassment. “Now, where were we?”
Ellie hated it. Couldn't stand how he just took control over anything she tried to do.
”Oh yeah. That’s right…“ He leaned closer to her, fixing her with an intense stare. “What bit ya?”
”Nuh-uh.” Ellie shook her head. “Not doing it.”
“Come on now, Doc. Holding out on me will get you nowhere. I’m a patient man.”
Now she had him.
Ellie cocked an eyebrow, glancing up from her notebook. ”Man?”
A cheap shot. And it clearly stung like a mother. Fight instincts of both human and alien beast kicked in. Fists clenched and fangs bared before the Colonel could collect himself.
She didn’t so much as blink at his intimidation tactic and once again the room was plunged into silence.
“Hey now. Are you done-“ She spoke calmly, mimicking his tone, letting her lips curl upwards into a smirk. “-acting up?”
”Smart mouth.” He nodded slowly, almost appreciatively. “So tell me, what exactly did you plan on doing next?”
“Next?” She was lost.
“I could give you a disciplinary for your attitude towards a superior officer.” Ellie felt the beads of sweat break out on her forehead, even in the air-conned space. “Easily. But I’m interested to see how this plays out, so I’m gonna let that one slide.”
”Why?” She didn’t understand.
“That was a nice little spark.” He grinned. “Took you long enough. But I want to see if I can get you breathing fire.”
Ellie blinked, taken aback. Did he just green-light her to cuss him out?
It would be plumbing the depths of professional conduct for sure, but they didn’t exactly teach you how to deal with the dead resurrected in medical school.
Quaritch rolled his eyes at her, still gawping at him stupidly.
“Listen. Ardmore isn’t the only one around here who can get you the things you need.” He spelled it out for her. “Or want. So play nice.”
“Huh.” She mulled the thought over. Interesting.
“Talk.” He urged her.
Ellie sighed heavily. He really wasn’t going to drop it. May as well put the elephant in the room out of its misery.
Here we go.
”A former patient attacked me. I wanted to refer him to someone else, and he didn’t take it very well at all.” She explained quietly. ”He choked out my receptionist…then came after me.”
Quaritch nodded, his expression neutral. No shock, but no sympathy, no condolence either. “How’d you get away?”
There was a long pause.
”Barely.” She swallowed the bile back down as she finally answered. Trickle-feed the information.
Make the bond.
“I see.” The Colonel remained stony-faced. “Been there, kid.”
“Uh-huh.”
Not a victim not a victim not a victim.
“Listen, you ain’t the only one here got bit by something you staked your trust in.” Ellie’s head jerked, when Colonel spoke again, he sounded surprisingly gentle. “You just have the mighty fine privilege of still being alive in the traditional sense.”
“For the record-“ She admitted “-I spoke out against bringing you back, Quaritch.”
Hoo boy, that might sting too.
“That’s cold, girly.” The snarl was lingering around the corners of his mouth again, fangs glinting with every word. “You wanted me to stay dead, huh?”
“No rest for the wicked.” She answered dryly. “But maybe you deserve that.”
“Pretty sure the entire Na’vi population would agree with you there.” He nodded. “But a philosophiser you ain’t, you’re one of them other p-words that get paid a lot more.”
Ellie frowned, unsure if he was strategically calling her other bad names in lieu of shrink-wrap.
“Project Phoenix is unethical. But since there is no moral legislation for Pandoran natives, or recombinants, my hands are tied. I’ve been told to treat you, so I have to.” It was her turn to spell things out. “But, I’m not sure how much I can help someone who so clearly doesn’t want it.”
”True.” He agreed. “So then just give up.”
“No!” Ellie fired back. “What part don’t you get about I have to?”
“If you’re so convinced I’m beyond saving, Doc-“ He spread his hands out wide for emphasis “-why even bother? Throw in the towel.”
“I’ve been given this assignment by Ardmore.” “I need to see it through.” She insisted. “Even if you don’t get anything out of this…at least I tried.”
“Oh, I’m getting plenty.” The Colonel nodded. “But no job’s worth wasting your life on.”
”That what you tell your troops?” Project Phoenix was potentially a suicide mission.
“They know what’s at stake. And as for you…you ain’t got my respect, yet.” Quaritch smiled grimly. “But you have my attention, for now.”
“Maybe that’s enough.” Ellie suggested. “For us to work together.”
“Symbiosis.” He nodded. “I like a project.”
Ellie wrinkled her nose in indignation. He was supposed to be her project.
“My men tell me you’re alright.” Quaritch mentioned abruptly. “‘Tibbs ain’t as bad as the other science pukes’, that’s what they said.”
“Did they now?” Ellie’s interest was piqued.
“Where I’m from, that’s a hefty compliment.” He cocked his head, ears pricking up. “I heard Z offered you an invitation.”
“She did.”
”I also heard you ain’t taken her up on it yet.”Quaritch tutted and gave her a stern look that made her want to disappear down into her own boots, like a child being scolded. “Bad manners.”
“I, uh-…“ The scientists didn’t socialise with the recom soldiers. It wasn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but it might as well be.
“You’d do well to accept that offer, while it lasts.” He warned her. “Or I’ll go back to callin’ ya shrink-wrap.”
”I’ll think about it, Colonel.” Ellie offered a small smile.
“Good.” Finally, he seemed pleased about something. “Be seein’ ya then, kiddo.”
After he left, she sat for a long time, trying to analyse their session so she could write her report. Trying to analyse him.
Quaritch wasn’t the only one holding one Hell of a grudge. Who would stop at nothing for vengeance against those who had crossed them.
She understood. Because they were the same.
Ellie would have given another of her limbs to avenge the one she’d lost. To make the bastard that took her arm, and very nearly her life, suffer beyond belief.
She and the Colonel had more in common than either of them were willing to admit.

The Amber eyed dreamwalker part 1
- This is an idea that's been in my head a while, as much as I feel like we should hate quaritch for his past and for what he did in twow I can't help but feel like he needs some love and a fresh start. All opinions are welcome. This will most likely be multi chapters. This is my first publicly shared fic so please bare with me while I get the hang of things.
Warnings: none, maybe slight violence, a knife, for this chaper but will most likely have smut in later chapters.
Miles quaritch trudged through the muddy grounds of a forest, he didn't know where he was, it all looked the same in his eyes, his ikran had gone off hunting he assumed, he didn't really care right now, after the events of the battle between himself, jake sully and The Metkayina he felt nothing but seething anger and needed to be alone, he was lucky to be alive but after spiders rejection he wished he'd been left to drown.
He had nothing, his team where dead, his mission had failed, what was he meant to do now, he'd been brought back for a reason, given his avatar body for a reason but now he was nothing but another dreamwalker lost and alone on Pandora.
After what seemed like hours miles came to a clearing with a small stream, kneeling down he cupped some of the water in his hands and drank greedily splashing water over his face and neck to cool himself down in the humidity of the forest, his ears twitching as he took in the sounds around him, creatures of Pandora chittering in the trees and bushes around him. Unbeknown to miles, another set of eyes where watching him closely.
As miles stood up he removed his combat vest leaving him in a khaki vest top and his camo trousers which had been cut above the knee, a knife still safely strapped to his thigh. He ripped off the communication devices from his ears and around his neck deaming them useless now he threw them to the ground. Sighing miles looked up through the trees, the sky looked beautiful, hard to believe that he had come from one of those stars.
He closed his eyes and breathed deeply.
Twigs on the ground snapped loudly behind him, miles spun on high alert, his ears pricked in anticipated, slowly reaching to unsheath the blade on his thigh, but before he reached the handle a heavy force knocked him to the forest floor, with the wind knocked out of him miles could do nothing but lay on the ground stunned. He barely noticed the sharp blade pressed to his throat and the female navi pinning him to the ground.
"If you make one more move towards that knife I'll slit your throat and leave you to the viperwolves and they don't leave much behind demon" the female navi snarled above him inching her face slightly closer to miles stunned one.
Still stunned from the sudden attack miles eyes roamed over the female, she had him pinned down straddling his waist, one hand firmly on his chest while the other held the blade to his throat, her tail swished aggressively behind her, he took in her appearance, her body was littered with scars and na'vi tattoos, she was quite small for a navi miles thought as he his eyes continued to roam her features, her hair was shaved on one side, the other had beads and other small pieces of jewellery laced through it. Several piercings adorned her ears and bottom lip, he noticed she had large holes in her lower ears much like netytri had, their eyes finally met, miles noticed that her eyes also roamed his features, taking him in with her piercing eyes, her...beautiful eyes.
"I...wha..." miles stuttered struggling to form his words, something very unusual as he was normally the one barking orders at people.
The female snarled above him removing the knife from his throat and stood up, at the same time she ripped the blade from miles thigh, turning she strode off leaving him still on the ground bewildered.
Breathing heavily Mikes shook his head in an attempt to wake himself up from his dazed state, he sat up and got to his feet as he watched her walk away back into the forest, she sheathed her blade on her thigh and continuing ahead. Before his brain had caught up he found himself following her into the darkness of the forest, he tried to be quite but he could tell by the way her ears moved that she knew he was their, he continued to follow her until they reached another clearing, surrounded by large rocks on either side. Miles watched her curiously as she stopped, she then made a sound in the back of her throat, ululating, the sound carried through the forest and echoed around them. Within seconds a loud roar echoed back and a large thantor crashed through the trees into the clearing.
The thantor circled miles slowly, its neck thrills raised, snarling at him, miles in a state of panic backed up against a rock, the thantor getting closer and closer.
Close enough now that miles could feel its breath on his skin, he looked away preparing for his inevitable demise but before that came a clicking tongue sound came from the female navi, the thantor huffed loudly and turned back to its owner, miles shuddered, he didn't know if he wanted to cry to throw up. Opening his eyes he watched as the thantor bowed lowly infront of the blue female, she bowed back smiling, it was then that miles noticed the saddle type garment on the creatures back, in all his time as a human and a navi he'd never known or heard of navis who rode thantors.
"Who are you then demon?" She asked.
"Why are you here?"
The female was walking back towards a shaking miles, swallowing hard he tried to form his words.
"I'm lost, I don't know where I am, i don't want to admit it but I'm scared and....wait...you spoke to me in English" miles looked at her confused, why was she speaking English to him.
She stared at him, her eyes gleaming.
"We are taught your demon language from a young age in the Thantor ’eveng (thantor clan) in case we need it, makes things easier for both sides if we need to negotiate"
Miles nodded slightly.
"What is your name demon?"
The female had moved closer to him now, miles felt nervous and shy almost as he answered her.
"I was colonel Miles quaritch but now..." he paused pursing his lips.
"I'm just miles" he answered sadly.
"And I won't hurt you or your erm...pet?" he added quietly gesturing to the thantor who lay on a large rock grooming itself.
She made a sarcastic sound, rolling her eyes, she turned and mounted the thantor, again the creature circled miles menacingly.
"My clan is not far away, you can either come with me or.....you can stay out here and wait for the viper wolves" She smirked at him, pointing his blade towards him.
Miles didn't seem to have much in the way of options, he either goes with this mystery female and possibly dies by her or her clans hands or he stays out in the forest in the dark and possibly dies by a pack of viper wolves.
He cautiously walked towards the thantor, gesturing towards its back.
"Erm... how do I?"
The female navi stretched out her arm towards him, miles grabbed it and was hauled not very gracefully onto the animals back, the thantor made an ungrateful sound as he situated himself behind its rider.
Not sure where to put his hands miles grabbed onto the animals armoured skin. Clicking her tongue again the thantor took off up the rocks and through the forest, instinctively miles grabbed onto the females waist in an attempt to steady himself, he felt her warm skin under his hands and prayed she wouldn't snap his fingers or stab him at the sudden contact.
Setting into a steady rhythm the 3 of them bounded through the forest, the sky growing darker as they rode deeper into the trees.
By the time they reached the entrance of the Thantor ’eveng's homestead his back was killing him and he felt like his inner thighs would definitely be bruised, letting the female navi slide off the thantors back first miles cautiously slid off wincing at the pain in his legs.
He tried to brush of the look of pain in his face as she turned to look at him.
"Is it worth me asking your name girl or am I gonna end up being killed and eaten by your clan?" Miles smiled slightly at her.
The female navi slowly circled miles looking him up and down, poking and prodding him gently and Occasionally licking her lips as if she was genuinely planning on roasting him alive.
"I'm jenna, and don't worry, you won't feed all of us. You can prove your worth in other ways here instead." She grinned at him cheekily.
Miles didn't realise he had been holding his breath until he let out a breathless laugh while he held his hands on his hips. "Shit" he quietly muttered to himself.
Jenna smiled at him "come, you must be hungry and tired, you can rest tonight and then we'll figure out what use you Will be to us in the morning" jenna gently touched his arm and pulled him along still smiling at him. Her tail playfully swishing
Miles instinctively followed her, finding himself more and more drawn to her.
To be continued......

Prologue | Chapter 2
Wild Animals
“Take a seat-“ Sir?
No, screw that, Colonel Quaritch wasn’t her commanding officer.
”-…over there.” Ellie gestured at the comically large armchair placed opposite her own human-sized one.
She stifled a nervous giggle. Strange to be the one giving the orders for a change.
Just make sure these recom soldiers are of relatively sound mind. Flag any issues. That’s your only job.
Ellie understood why her role existed. The big bosses of the RDA were more than a little twitchy at any mention of recombinants after the actions of Jake Sully, Na’vi sympathiser. It could not happen again.
The destruction of the Omatikaya Hometree sixteen years prior had been a colossal waste of money and lives. Ardmore called the shots now, and was determined to do things differently this time around. She figured cheaper and easier to employ a psychiatrist, than be doomed to repeat history. Video diaries alone weren’t going to cut it anymore.
It might be Ellie’s only job, but it was one Hell of a job. She was the one holding the metaphorical scales judging the outcome of Project Phoenix.
She ran through her usual welcome-to-the-session spiel as she sat down to face Quaritch, adjusting her visor under her chin.
That was another thing. Neither of them could breathe the other’s air.
A power move for sure, since she was the one currently speaking through an exopack, the rubber seal itching her face terribly.
Compromise. It had to happen.
Part of her didn’t think Quaritch would even deign to show up. But Ardmore had reassured Ellie that he took his schedule very seriously. And if the Colonel was one thing, it was punctual.
But why would any of the recombinant soldiers bother with a shrink in the first place?
The General had promised certain motivations for those who regularly attended their appointments with Tibbs, M.D. Things that were hard to come by. Items that made living on an alien planet, and in a new alien form, a little more bearable.
Zdinarsik had a penchant for pink bubblegum. Sure thing. Mansk had a quite frankly embarrassing collection of expensive sunglasses. Forget about it, done. Fike and Wainfleet, Ellie wasn’t privy to their wants, but she had a feeling they were of the adult reading material variety.
Still only human, even in a non-human body.
Quaritch, well, Ellie wasn’t sure what he liked yet.
Did he like anything?
Judging by the look on his face, he certainly didn’t like her.
Goddamn it, initiating conversation with these blue giants never got any easier. They were all just so intimidating.
Ellie cleared her throat and tried to look ill-at-ease as she took the first step.
“So, what would you like to talk about today?”
No response.
Well, that was rude.
She tried for more casual, conversational. “How’s Project Phoenix treating you so far?”
Still nothing. Maybe an expletive muttered under his breath as he stared her down.
Oh great, he was going to be one of those.
”Whatever, it’s your hour.” Ellie shrugged. “I get paid the same whether you talk or not.”
They sat in claustrophobic silence for over forty-five minutes, the Colonel clearly going to the place deep in his mind where he could feel no pain, and Ellie wishing she could do the same.
Towards the end, when it was apparent he wasn’t going to give her anything at all, she started writing on her notepad, scrambling for something she could type up later that was incrementally more interesting than the colour of the walls or what the weather was doing.
The incessant scratching of pen on paper was what finally got the Colonel to speak up.
”What you scribbling there?” His cat-like ears flicked back in irritation. “You sketching my portrait or something?”
“Hm?” She glanced up, startled by the sound of his voice. “Oh, it’s just notes.”
”I ain’t done anything.”
”You haven’t said anything.” Ellie tapped her pen against her notepad. “I wouldn't write down specifics we discussed, doctor-patient confidentiality rules. But I can still write about your overall demeanour, how stressed you appear…unwillingness to co-operate. That’s the sort of thing I report back to the General.”
“Got it all figured out, doncha?” His sardonic reply made her stomach drop. “I don’t have to tell you anything, shrink-wrap.”
”No, but you may as well get something out of our session.” She replied, exasperation threatening her tone. “We can talk about literally anything.”
“Anything?” He suddenly leaned forward, fixing her with eye contact so intense she found it hard to hold his gaze. “Stays in this room?”
Ellie tried not to let her excitement show as she nodded agreement. Less than an hour and she was already wearing him down, a notoriously difficult customer. Who said the Colonel was hard to break?
“Alright.” He settled back in his oversized chair with a smirk. “Why don’t you tell me, about how that arm of yours ain’t real?”
Ellie couldn’t catch the shocked widening of her eyelids fast enough. ”Excuse me?”
She fought the instinctual twitch of reaching down to tug at her sleeve with her remaining hand. A nervous gesture, to cover herself.
But he was right on the money. Ellie Thibodeaux only had one arm.
Still a very sore subject. Power moves, indeed.
She could only gawp at him stupidly, speechless.
”I’ve seen my fair share of busted limbs.” Quaritch drawled. “I know a prosthetic, and a bad one at that, when I see one, even with your clothes on.”
Ellie meanwhile, was just staring back in horror.
“What got you? Landmine, congenital defect?” He quirked an eyebrow at her discomfort. “Wild animal?”
“That’s none of your concern.” To her annoyance, she sounded upset when she finally spoke. Ellie’s voice shook as she croaked out her words.
Crap, audible weakness.
With her exopack on, she couldn’t take a sip of water to break the tension. She couldn’t do anything except fog up the inside of her visor with how her breathing had quickened.
“I’m gonna go with the latter. The hand that still moves just strangled your pen to death.” Quaritch nodded knowingly, visibly pleased with his own intellect. “Guess you just didn’t run fast enough, back on Earth, huh?”
“Maybe I’m still running.” Ellie muttered. She blinked after the words hung in the atmosphere between them.
Why’d I say that?
“Are you, now?” He finally looked somewhat interested in her. “What are you running from, shrink?”
The datapad on the table to her right started beeping insistently. Ellie‘s end-of-session alarm was sounding, an entire hour had finally passed.
Thank Christ for that.
She forced an angelic smile, beyond relieved.
”Sorry, Colonel. That’s all the time we have for today.”
“Hm.” He nodded, already standing to leave. ”Was just getting good.”
”Will you be attending our next session?” Ellie asked, unable to keep the hostility out of her voice. She was hoping for a firm no. Fine, let Ardmore deal with him.
Her professional facade had well and truly slipped. Quaritch had successfully rattled her.
”I might.” He didn’t even look back. “See you around, shrink-wrap.”
Oh God. She would see him around, no doubt. Bridgehead City was big, but not big enough. The entire planet of Pandora was no longer big enough for her liking.
Ellie exhaled and slumped down in her chair, exhausted. “Shit.”
That could have gone better.
He’d told her nothing, and gotten uncomfortably close to her heart in record time, homing in on her missing arm as easily as an enemy target.
Who’s breaking who, then?
Obviously, he wasn’t Colonel for no reason. She knew that now.
Ellie was already dreading his second session more than she ever thought possible.

My Little Scientist- Chapter eight
Recombinant Miles Quaritch x OC
Authors note: so I've decided to change this story from a x reader to x named OC (Gaia) so I can flesh out the character a bit more, I didn't think I would write so many chapters when I started and just feel more comfortable writing OC's in longer stories, hope this is okay with everyone!
and thank you everyone so much for the support, your likes and comments mean so much, honestly writing is the only thing I really enjoy and it's so nice to know that other people enjoy reading what I've written, love you all and I hope you enjoy this next chapter xxx
3,044 words
Warnings: all the usual ones, Minors DNI
Chapter 9
Once Miles had returned to his room he was disappointed to be greeted with her absence, not even a note to sweeten the abandonment, only his wrinkled shirt laying haphazardly in the mess of sheets. He reached down to feel the material between his fingers, it still smelled of her, and it brought him back to how she looked with it draped over her naked body. He wondered why she'd decided to leave him in the dust, pretending it didn't leave a gaping hole in his chest.
Gaia, however, was preoccupied, thoughts of her impending relocation to a remote base making her head swim with anxiety. She had signed up for this all on her own and she was going to pull through, but at the same time she couldn't help but wonder if she'd gotten herself in too deep this time, not to mention the fact that she'd be separated from her whole lab team, and her one and only close friend, June. She knew she hadn't been as close as usual, considering the stressful events of the past few weeks, but that wasn't to say she didn't love her, and that dork Mike who was attached to her hip these days. Maybe she should go and talk to her, but somehow the distance had created an awkward tension between them both that she couldn't seem to break through.
"There's our Colonel's girl, how you doing sweetness?"
A soldier spoke up, loud enough to draw her out of her thoughts, and upon looking around she recognised it to be none other than Lyle Wainfleet.
"My name's not sweetness it's Gaia,"
she scoffed, speeding past the recombinant gym, cheeks flushed in embarrassment.
"Aww come on, don't be like that, we've all gotta live together pretty soon so we'd better get to know each other,"
he crossed her path to block her exit, leaning leisurely against the hallway wall as he looked her up and down in a judgemental fashion.
"Leave me alone Lyle,"
she growled, attempting to hide her shaking legs from the 10 ft tall alien as she held her ground.
"Stop harassing the girl dumbass,"
a female voice caught her attention, coming from the room beside her and turning her head she caught sight of a woman slouched against a bench press who she believed to be Z-dog.
"Oh come on, I was barely even talking. plus she's not scared of us like the others are you girlie? She's dating the Colonel after all."
"We're not dating,"
Gaia interjected, making the faces of the two soldiers faulter, before Lyle coughed out a laugh
"I'll make sure to tell him you said that... or you can tell him yourself if you like,"
mumbling the last part of the sentence, his eyes cast downwards like a scolded puppy as she felt a shadow engulfing her pint-sized body before the familiar voice hit her.
"Tell me what Gaia?"
Turning reluctantly to face him, she was forced to crane her neck uncomfortably to meet his eye, not liking the despondent expression she was met with, especially as she knew she'd been the one to cause it with her own self-centred fears.
"Well I mean, we're not dating are we?"
She knew this time she'd really done it, the way the anger and disbelief flashed across his face so readily, in a way she'd never seen the reserved man exhibit emotion before.
"Well, that's not exactly the view I got when I had my cock down your throat this morning doll, that just something you do for all the soldiers then?"
His words cut her to the core, especially being said in front of his squad, who's respect for her was barely holding on by a thread at best, and even though she knew he only said it because he was angry, and hurt, she couldn't find in herself to forgive him.
"You prick,"
she screeched, shoving his leg, unable to move it even an ich, despite leaning her whole body weight against him, refusing to meet the eyes of Lyle and Z-dog who she could already hear snickering in their corner whilst she was drowning in shame.
"What? we're not dating are we? Or you wanted me to act like your boyfriend all of a sudden?"
She felt so hurt by him, malice dripping from his every word as he flashed her a signature lopsided smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, looking down on her like he might tread on her if he had the chance.
"You know what, you're right, were not dating, so you can take this shit back, have fun exercising your right hand for the rest of your life. asshole."
She spat, snapping the dog tags off her neck to throw them unceremoniously at Mile's stomach. She wanted him to hurt just as bad as he'd made her, and she knew how to do it, taking in the pained look on his face for a split second before turning on her heel and marching off proudly, fighting the urge to flip them all off as the anger surged through her like lava in her veins, unstoppable and ready to destroy anything in its wake.
Miles bent down slowly to scoop the metal chain from the ground, keeping his eyes on her silhouette disappearing steadily from view, stuffing the tags into his back pocket, pretending not the feel the way they'd warmed from her skin, or the way his heart clenched when she threw them back at him. These days it felt like they always fought and he didn't understand why she kept pushing him away, keeping him at arms length and kicking back if he ever got too close.
"What the hell are you lot looking at, you not got anything better to do?"
He snarled suddenly directing his attention back to the crowd of troops that had gathered at the gym entrance, scattering as soon as his ferocious gaze settled on their spying faces. Maybe he should just let her go, she'd made it pretty clear she didn't feel as deeply for him as he did her. To think he was almost reckless enough to say he loved her, he wouldn't let himself get caught up in such trivial things again, he'd lost sight of the main objective, the reason he was even alive, to capture Jake Sully and put an end to the feud between Pandora and the RDA, for humanity.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The days dragged on and the mission drew closer, nonetheless, Gaia and Miles were still not on speaking terms, brushing past one another in the hallways like strangers, both too stubborn to admit how much they'd missed each other.
"Hey June, Mike,"
Gaia greeted her old friends with a warm smile, seated in the mess hall as always, this time with hands intertwined, June's head resting easily on his shoulder as her eyes met Gaia's.
"Gaia, how have you been babe, I feel like I haven't seen you in forever,"
she smiled softly back to her, making no move to remove herself from her lover.
"I know, it's been forever, I've just been so busy with the mission that I've been rushed off my feet,"
she attempted to laugh, feeling off put by the blatant displays of affection, bringing her thoughts back to the many soft touches and kisses she and Miles had shared.
"Yeah I heard about that, I can't believe you're actually going, do you think it'll be safe?"
She questioned more animatedly, propping her head up at last, to direct her focus away from Mike.
"Yeah, I'll be okay, I can look after myself,"
she smiled halfheartedly, twirling her thumbs as she looked down.
"Yeah and I'm sure Quaritch wouldn't let anything happen to you either,"
she grinned catishly, flashing a raised eyebrow at mike before looking back to her.
"I don't care what he does it's not my problem anymore,"
she grimaced, leaning her chin on her open palm, looking away wistfully as she pretended the revelation of their break up didn't sting.
"What? You guys broke up, you never said...guess that explains why you're here though,"
June chuckled, reaching over to give her shoulder a pat as she pouted like a child.
"We were never together, we just both know that now,"
she paused, locking eyes with June before she spoke again,
"I am sorry, for disappearing like that, I didn't mean to it's just..."
She nodded, the apology seeming to be what was needed to crack the icy demeanour she'd insisted on showing her these past few weeks.
"Aw it's okay Gai, I know, that man's enough to drive anyone insane, I don't know how you handled him for this long,"
she rubbed her arm in comfort, tilting her head to the side as she spoke.
"He can be pretty annoying can't he,"
Gaia grinned sincerely at last, finding solace in her understanding eyes.
"That's an understatement."
Mike appended with an honest laugh, her heart warming at their ability to re-welcome her into their lives despite her neglect to their friendship these past months.
"Thanks guys,"
she laughed along, trying to avoid looking over at the large blue figure that had entered the room moments ago, avoid watching the way he winked at the pretty cook that gave him an extra potato, avoid the way her cheeks glowed red and her eyes cast downwards with a small smile on her glossy lips.
"Just ignore him Gaia,"
June muttered, taking another mouthful of the dry potato and stew on her plate as her eyes stayed trained on the blue man, giving him a scowl whenever he looked her way. She couldn't stay and watch him flirt with someone else, it killed her to see how easily he'd moved on already when she was still in love with the stupid, arrogant man.
"You know, I'm not really hungry, I'm gonna head to bed early, go read a book or something,"
she shot out, rushing to her feet in spite of the noise of protest that left June's mouth, walking briskly with her head down so as not to meet the eyes of a certain Colonel as tears gathered at the corners of her own.
Miles was watching her though, even if she refused to look at him, he couldn't keep his eyes off of her. He wondered if she hated him for what he'd said, wanting nothing more than to follow her out of that room, yet knowing she had to be the one to come to him, he needed her forgiveness before he could go to her, and with the way he'd acted he doubted she'd be receptive, it was time for him to move on and forget about her.
"Colonel, just go and talk to her you two fight like children sometimes,"
Mansk piped up, earning a stone cold glare from his superior that had him dipping his head to stuff food into his mouth in silence.
"He's not wrong Colonel, everyone can see you've been in a foul mood since you both stopped speaking,"
Lyle was the only soldier with the balls to keep prodding the bear, being his corporal gave him a certain leeway that the others hadn't earned.
"You're both so stubborn"
Z-dog uttered under her breath, head in her palm as she observed her ruthless Colonel falling apart at the hands of one, singular, human woman.
"I'd implore you all to shut your pie holes before I make you regret it,"
He arched an eyebrow, sweeping a pair of yellow eyes across the table, watching his troops lower their heads in submission, silence falling over the group at his request, the sour taste left in their mouths not being from the RDA food for once.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lyle, Z-dog and Mansk were hanging out in their usual spot outside the base, having just finished another gruelling training session with the Colonel consisting of a 10 mile run along with sparring and strength tests that had them sweating like pigs.
"Lyle, Mansk, we've gotta do something man, I'm gonna die at this rate if Colonel doesn't lay off."
Lyle grunted as he took a swig from Mansk's bottle, eyes flashing to the brooding man as he considered their options.
"Well, what do you suggest Z?
he retorted incredulously.
"I think we should parent trap them or something, they've gotta talk out whatever's going on."
Z-dog rubbed her hands together like the villain of a movie, enjoying having something other than the upcoming mission to think about.
"Come off it, you saw their last fight, they'd kill each other,"
Lyle grimaced at the memory of their peaceful gym session being interrupted once again by the hotheaded blue man.
"Or fuck it out, hate sex is the best kind,"
Mansk quirked an eyebrow as if he were imagining the scenario, or more likely Gaia, still a little too fond of the woman in question.
"Of-course you'd say that,"
Lyle grinned, slapping his back, the water sloshing out of his open bottle with the force, a glare from Mansk being shot right back at him.
"It could work I guess,"
He finally agreed in the silence, it was the only idea they'd got and god damn he knew he'd expire too if he had to run another 10 miles tomorrow.
"I feel like a fucking spy, this is great, I'll take the girl, you lot get the Colonel,"
Z-dog grinned, swaying her hips as she pranced away with her sweat stained shirt slung over her shoulder, making the others groan in annoyance, knowing the Colonel would arguably be the hardest to convince considering nowadays he was such a tightly coiled spring, any minor inconvenience would set him off. Still it was for the good of the team, they needed their Colonel back and they supposed helping him with his terrible relationship skills would just be a bonus for him.
They wouldn't waste any time, they had to get it done tonight, which is why Lyle was now pulling an extra late night session at the gym, all in hopes of spotting the elusive Colonel Quaritch whilst Mansk waited on the sidelines for his queue. It didn't take long for the man to appear, his routines running like clockwork, when he moved immediately over to the treadmill to warm up, Lyle followed to take the machine beside him, striking up friendly conversation.
"Sir, don't usually get to catch a workout with you,"
he called out jovially, slapping the man's broad shoulder, not sparking any reaction from Miles who kept his eyes trained forward, speeding to a jog instead.
"What do you want Lyle?"
He could see through his bullshit immediately, used to the antics of a bunch of young soldiers cooped up on a base for months on end.
"Nothing Sir, I'm just happy to see you,"
he laughed in the silence as his Colonels face twitched in discomfort, knowing he preferred to be left alone at times like these, and he found it quite amusing to wind him up every now and again.
"Although, you might be interested to know Gaia was asking after you, said to tell you she'd be waiting for you in break room."
His ears twitched at the mention of her name, sparking his interest, especially at the thought of her waiting up for him after such a prolonged time apart.
"Don't bullshit me Lyle,"
he growled lowly, speeding up yet again to take his thoughts off of her, her soft golden hair and delicate frame, encasing a volatile soul.
"Oh, hey Mansk, fancy seeing you here,"
Lyle dropped in, not so subtly, watching the recombinant saunter over to the squat rack, not bothering to hide the fact that he had no interest in working, using it to lean against instead.
"Hey there, Lyle don't let me interrupt your interesting conversation,"
he grinned, sarcasm deeply embedded into his words.
"Well now you mention it Mansk, I was just talking about how Sunshine's all alone wating for the Colonel in the break room, you hear about that?"
He snickered, walking lazily on the treadmill, laying out the bait so conspicuously he wondered if the Colonel would stoop so low as to take it, though anything involving his precious scientist he knew he couldn't resist.
"Oh, Sunshine? Yeah I saw her, all on her own, might go keep her company actually, be a shame to let that opportunity go to waste."
His comment drew a whistle from Lyle's lips, stealing a glance at Quaritch who was gripping the bars of the machine so hard his knuckles had started to turn white, his jaw set and lips pursed, still refusing to acknowledge Mank's words.
"Well guess I'll get out of your hair, see you Colonel."
Mansk began to walk slowly for the door, surprised at Quaritch's lack retaliation, that was until he felt himself being ripped away from the exit by his arm, a large man striding in front of him wordlessly, leaving both Mansk and Lyle in stitches, even more so when they noticed he hadn't even bothered to shut off the treadmill in his haste, disappearing down the hall to find his Juliet at last.
They followed swiftly, knowing the jig wasn't up yet and the hardest part was still to come, it was difficult enough to swipe the keys for the room off Quaritch's desk, now they had to be quick enough to lock him in without being noticed by the hypervigilant man.
Luckily for them, once he set his eyes on Gaia, he appeared entranced, stepping into the room without a second thought, not caring to look behind him, that was until both he and Gaia heard the distinct click of a lock, whipping around in unison to see the devious faces of his troops peering back at them through the small pane of glass at the top of the door.
"Sorry sir this is for your own good!"
Lyle shouted through the fogged up window before running away like a coward when Miles marched up to to the locked entrance, attempting to wrench it open from the handle but instead managing to pull the whole thing off, forcing him to acknowledge that they were both stuck in there whether they liked it or not.

Herwì Syulang: Chapter 3
Neteyam Sully X Fem Na’vi!OC
Masterlist
Word Count: 3K
Summary: Quaritch is back... 5 years after the battle between the Sky People and the Sully Family alongside the Metikayina Clan, the exact battle where Neteyam was almost taken by Eywa. Seeking revenge yet again on Jake Sully, Quaritch massacres an entire Na’vi Clan in the Snow Mountains of Pandora - sparing one young Na’vi girl’s life to send the great Toruk Makto a message.
Warnings: Mentions of Weapons, Blood, Violence, Death, Swearing, Fluff, Soft Neteyam
Author’s Note: hi besties! hope your enjoy this chapter, the start of this story has completed kicked off now and I’m planning on doing a small time skip from here on the next chapter hehehe <3 (feedback, comments, reblogs and asks are appreciated!)
Laughter, chatter and singing filled the warm air as the Omatikaya people danced and ate – celebrating their leaders’ youngest birthday. Those that were old enough to, drank and young mated couples snuck off into their tents rather obviously. The campfire beside kelutral (hometree) was huge and emitted heat in the surrounding area.
When Herwìva arrived with ¾ Sully siblings and they were greeted by the latter’s parents She couldn’t help but cower slightly at meeting Neytiri. She was far more to be feared than Jake. She had suffered through so much pain, loss, and destruction too and had built a family and new life with them. She was fearless, strong, and intimidating but had a soft nurturing side which took Herwìva by surprise as the Olo’eykte took her into her arms and embraced her, assuring the snow clan girl that she could turn to her for anything she may need.
Herwìva couldn’t believe how welcoming and understanding the entire family had been today and she thanked Eywa for sending Neteyam to her and leading her here.
She sat beside Neteyam and Kiri whilst they passed around a large, thick leaf that was filled with alcohol that had been fermented from plants within the forest. The strong, sweet liquid was easing her nerves and filling her with courage which she was secretly relieved about. Many of the clan members kept staring and whispering. Still wondering and assuming about the new foreign snow Na’Vi in their village.
“Hey big bro!” A voice called over to the three and two new figures approached.
Neteyam looked up and smiled before leaning into Herwìva’s ear. She felt his breath, hot against her as heat radiated off his body causing her to skin to form goosebumps. “This is our mischief maker and his mate, Tsireya.”
She let out a light laugh at the nickname he gave his brother, Lo’ak, and Neteyam relished in the ability to be the cause of the sweet sound escaping her mouth.
Kiri spoke up, “mischief maker is an understatement.” The three chortled together as the two new figures approached.
Herwìva took in the Omatikaya boy’s appearance. He certainly resembled his father. Beside him was a turquoise-coloured female Na’Vi decorated in various shells and pearls. She smiled at Herwìva and waved. A sense of comfort flowed through her at the sight of another foreign Na’Vi within the forest clan, and a seemingly kind-hearted one at that.
Lo’ak grinned as he saw the new girl between his siblings. “Hey, I’m Lo’ak. And this is my muntxa si (mate), Tsireya.”
Their hands were intertwined and Tsireya beamed at the girl between her brother and sister-in-law, “you must be Herwìva. It’s nice to meet you. I’m so sorry to hear about the great loss you’ve faced.”
Herwìva’s lips curled up as she stood, bowing her head slightly. “It’s nice to meet you both and thank you.”
“I take it Mr Perfect has been bossing you around since you got here.” Lo’ak hummed and narrowed his eyes jokingly.
She snickered as Tsireya elbowed his side for the comment and Neteyam scoffed. He wasn’t joking when he told Herwìva about their constant bickering. “He’s been more than kind, Lo’ak.”
Neteyam’s heart sped up at the girl coming to his defence. “Just sit down, you skxawng, he huffed at his brother.
Kiri laughed, handing Tsireya the leaf to drink from but Lo’ak was quick to swipe the leaf from his partner’s hands and take a sip for himself. “Take it easy brother. We all know you can’t handle your drink.” Kiri rolled her eyes and he looked at her offendedly.
As Herwìva was about to sit again, Tuk ran over to take her hand in her smaller one. Tuktirey was filled with joy as she came over and Herwìva then knew she wouldn’t be able to say no to anything the young girl was after as she had a wanting glint in her doe green eyes.
“Come and dance with me ‘Wìva.”
She froze, wishing she could say no but couldn’t bare the thought of seeing the young Na’Vi frown, especially since it was her birthday.
“Come everyone, let’s dance!”
Her siblings moaned lightly in resistance, already comfortably sitting and slightly intoxicated.
Herwìva’s heart warmed at the siblings relationships with each other. She could tell that they were all very close and it was nice to see such a tight knit family. It reminded her of her own… something that she would never get to experience again. She would be forever indebted to them and their kindness for offering her a new home. She knew that it wouldn’t be easy and that she would never be able to fully heal from all the death and destruction she had faced, but there was a gentle voice in her head telling her that she would be safe and happy here. Eywa.
Laughing, Herwìva let the young girl drag her along. “Come on guys!”
Without a second to spare Neteyam stood up, shortly followed by the rest and they all made their way over to the large space where the People were already dancing. Kiri chuckled at her older brother’s urgency as soon as Herwìva told them to also join. This was going to be interesting.
The group began moving their bodies to the flow of the music, noises from the flutes and drums echoing around the air and encouraging their movements. Herwìva swayed her body to the beat with Tuk’s hand still in hers and she spun the younger girl around, making her giggle.
Neteyam tried to focus on anything but Herwìva’s movements. He found her captivating and he wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol or not but he was entirely entranced by her. Confusion encased his thoughts at how he had never been interested in another Na’Vi until he met Herwìva earlier on today. There was a sudden, undeniable connection between them both.
As they were dancing, unbeknownst to the group, the leaders of the Omatikaya People watched the snow Na’Vi with their gleeful children.
Neytiri eyed the interactions between the group as she spoke to her mate. She was trying to control her rage at the news of the Sky People massacring a whole Na’Vi village and leaving such a young girl with so much trauma and burdens to carry. “I don’t like this ma’ Jake. What if they followed her here?”
Jake sighed sadly, wrapping his arm around his worried mate in attempt to sooth her. “I know, but if she hadn’t come to us, we would have no idea about the Sky People returning. She needs refuge, she has nowhere else to go. So many lives have been lost because of me. The least I could do is try to give her a life here. And she wasn’t followed here either. Our tracking devices within the area would have gone off from their technology otherwise.”
Neytiri leaned into her partner, nodding in understanding. Her heart hurt for Herwìva. How could the Great Mother allow such a thing to happen? “Nobody deserves the fate that she had. Nobody deserves to loose their family and home so suddenly.”
Jake hummed in agreement as she continued to speak. “But ma’ Jake, please, this is not your fault. You couldn’t have known.”
“They’re looking for me, Neytiri. Quaritch is after us and our family.”
She scowled, hissing at Jake’s words. “Then I will kill that demon as many times as I have to!”
---
As the night went on, the celebrations died down and the group found themselves back in Neteyam’s tent surrounded by the small fire pit and sprawled out along the soft cushions on the floor.
“Happy Birthday to our little Tuktirey!” Lo’ak drunkenly cheered as everyone else followed with a chorus of congratulations to the youngest Na’Vi in the room. Tuk glared at her brother’s use of the word ‘little’ and he cleared his throat to correct himself, “who is not so little anymore!”
Tuk snorted sleepily, “if this is what happened when you drink then I don’t ever want to do it.” Everyone laughed at the comment, words slurring in protest at how she would change her mind as she grew up.
Herwìva’s eyes caught a glimpse of one of the bracelets that hung around her wrist, and she felt the urge to gift it to Tuk. She realised that she may have intruded on such an important day in the youngest Sully’s life and wanted to make up for it in some way.
“Tuk?” She began and removed the bracelet from her wrist. It was dainty, golden wiring swirled around white crystals and it was something that she cherished a lot. “I’d like to give you something.”
Tuktirey turned to the pale blue girl beside her and tilted her head curiously. Lifting up the bracelet, it twinkled in the light and Herwìva passed it to the young girl. A gasp left her lips.
“Happy Birthday, Tuk.” Herwìva began softly, smiling. “To my people, the moonstones in this signify Femininity and are meant to bring us courage and help us embrace new beginnings. It seems fitting for you on the day your journey into womanhood begins.”
Tuk gave her a happy and grateful look before tackling the snow Na’Vi down in a hug. “It’s so lor (beautiful). Thank you ‘Wìva. I will treasure it forever.”
The other’s awed at the interaction and Herwìva’s kind gesture. The pair were laughing with their arms around each other before they pulled apart and sat upright whilst the group began chattering amongst themselves again.
Neteyam was sat on the other wide of Herwìva and he smiled at her, speaking lowly. “That was very sweet of you. I know Tuk really appreciates it.”
She wasn’t sure if it was the heat from the fire or the alcohol warming her cheeks right now but due to the close proximity of the boy who had led her here today, she could have guessed that there was a possibility of him factoring into her sudden rise in body temperature too.
Herwìva’s eyes fluttered over the future Olo’eyktan’s, taking in his luminescent freckles and large green glowing eyes. His action’s mirrored hers, eyes tracing over how snowflake shaped bioluminescent dots that littered her face and he stared into her icy blue eyes.
“Of course, it’s the least I can do.” She whispered and Neteyam’s ears twitched at the soft sound.
Kiri suddenly let out a yawn and groaned, leaning into Tuk. “Take me to bed.”
Everyone mumbled, nodding through their tired eyes in agreement and began to depart, bidding everyone goodnight. It must have been around the early hours of the morning now and Herwìva began to feel the lack of sleep overtake her body.
Soon it was just her left with Neteyam and he stood up with his hand out, offering her help to stand up which she gratefully took. Her limbs felt heavy, much like her eyelids.
Neteyam felt the coolness of her hand touch his larger warm one and he reviled in it. Her skin always felt so cool and calming against his and he liked the contrast, as did Herwìva. Although, they would never admit it out load to each other.
With her hand still in his, he lead Herwìva to the flap of the room she’d be staying in and she gently removed his grip from her. She looked up at him, his larger frame towering over her and she smiled softly, lips parting to speak. “Thank you, Neteyam. For everything you did for me today. I’ll be forever indebted to your family and I hope that I’ll be able to learns the ways of Omaticaya and find a place here to benefit the community to show my gratitude.”
Neteyam’s fangs grazed over his lips as he spoke. The way his name rolled off her tongue made something stir within him. “I promised you that you would be in safe hands here and I will never break that promise. You will adapt to life here and I will help you. My family understands what it is like to move to a foreign clan because 5 years ago we did the same.”
Herwìva’s eyes widened at the information. “Is that how Lo’ak met Tsireya?”
He nodded. “Yes. We are part of the Metakayina Clan now too. Every few months we will go to visit still and Lo’ak and Tsireya live with them but visit us every few weeks and for special occasions like today.”
The snow Na’Vi nodded her head in acknowledgement, the words the young warrior spoke were filling between the lines of questions that had been floating through her mind since she got here.
“Wow,” she breathed out. “That must have been a difficult adjustment. I’m guessing your family didn’t have a choice to leave the forest.”
Neteyam shook his head, continuing. “No, we didn’t. The Sky People took my siblings but me, my mother and father managed to get to them in time. They were after us then… and still out now. My father thought it was best if we left the clan to help protect our people and also our family. The Metakayina weren’t very happy about it at first and the Sky People ended up finding us. It resulted in a battle between us Na’Vi and the Sky People with their Avatars. I was shot and almost died but Eywa granted me a second chance at life.”
Herwìva let out a light gasp at his words and she frowned. “I’m sorry that you had to go through that.”
He let out a dark chuckle as he mentally relived the battle. “But it’s nothing compared to what you’ve lost.”
Herwìva reached out, gently stroking his arm. “Just because I have suffered more losses than you does not mean that your experiences were any easier.”
Leaning into her touch, Neteyam placed his hand softly over hers, their fingers grazing each other’s and threatening to lock into the others.
“You need to rest Herwìva.”
“Goodnight, Neteyam.”
“Sleep well, Herwì Syulang (Snow Flower).”
---
Blood. It was everywhere. Coating her pale blue hands as screams of horror pierced her ears and they twitched in fear. Herwìva clutched her knives in her hands as she turned around in the icy alcove, stepping out.
“TSMUKE (sister)!” The scream echoed in the distance.
Her feet carried her through the powdered snow, the snowflakes attaching themselves to her fur boots in the process before she skidded to a halt. In her direct line of vision stood a dark blue avatar with a harsh grip on her baby sister’s small body.
Wails and cries for help escaped the small Na’Vi’s mouth, “Herwìva!”
The avatar grunted, smacking the side of the child’s head and Herwìva’s blood boiled, eyes staring at the avatar with mighty fury.
“Mawey (Calm), Atríx. I’m here hì’I (little) tsmuke.”
She cried out against the tight grip around her.
“Shut it, you little cunt!” The Avatar then lifted a gun to the temple of the small girl’s head.
Dropping the blades in her hands and sliding her bow off her shoulder, Herwìva aimed her bow and arrow in a flash and the avatar grunted in pain at the sharp poisoned arrowhead piercing his neck.
“Son of a bitch!” He screamed threw the girl into the snow, legs moving and charging in the direction of Herwìva.
“TUL (run) ASTRÌX!” She yelled as she ran towards the approaching avatar, fangs bared as she let out a war cry.
Atrìx struggled to breathe and her body shook with fear as she saw the avatar suddenly stop on his feet, turning around and pointing the gun at her.
Before Herwìva could get to him, it was too late. An agonising gunshot rung through the air and Astrìx fell back into the snow, blood seeping into the snow around her.
---
Shouts and sobs awoke Neteyam. He stirred from his slumber, ears registering the noises causing him to shoot up and out of his hammock, crouching in a stance prepared to fight. It was dark still. The only light within the tents being from the last few lanterns that were lit but were slowly flickering out.
The warrior made his way out of his room and followed the noises to the leather flap covering the room Herwìva resided in. Anxiety festered within his chest as he approached.
“No, Astríx!” Another sob. “Run!”
“Herwìva?” Concern was laced in his features and through his voice. After hearing another cry he decided to lift the flap and was presented with the light blue girl thrashing around in her hammock, crying and calling out for someone who he could only guess was her little sister.
He inched closer into the room and cautiously approached her, not wanting to spook her and calmly spoke. “Herwìva? You’re dreaming.”
The yelling stopped and Herwìva perched herself on her elbows, sleepy eyes squinting through the darkness. “Astrìx?”
Neteyam sighed sadly. “It’s Neteyam. You were having a nightmare.”
At the sound of the Omatikayan male’s deep voice, Herwìva’s reality harshly hit her in the face and she whimpered. “I’m sorry.”
She was overwhelmed with sadness, pain and guilt. Why was she the only survivior? Why was everyone and everything she ever knew, dead? She had lost her whole life so quickly and felt like she was to blame for not doing more. Not trying to save as many people as she could. Her whole family died and it was eating her from the inside, out.
Neteyam moved closer, reaching out for her. “Don’t say sorry. It’s not your fault.”
“But it’s a-all my f-fault,” she began stuttering and placed her head in her hands continuing to cry. She felt his strong, warm and muscular arms encase her small shuddering figure and she cried.
Neteyam’s own pain grew within him as he felt Herwìva shake uncontrollably in his arms. She cried and cried and he held her, kneeling beside her hammock and whispering soothing words in attempt to comfort the traumatised girl. The wetness of her tears leaked through her hands and onto his arms and he only held her tightly.
“None of this is your fault, Herwìva. You couldn’t have known so please do not blame yourself, okay?”
“O-okay.”
“I promised I will keep you safe here and I will. I won’t let anything else hurt you anymore.”

AHHHHH!! I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS!!!🥹🫶🏾💗
The way you described the beautiful forest life was perfect, I felt as if I was physically there 😭🫶🏾💗!!!
I would love for this to be a series!! But no pressure ofc!!
Finders Keepers
Neteyam x Daughter of Quaritch (first person)
Quaritch's daughter on Earth had cancer. As a last resort, she was put into a Avatar body and brought to Pandora. One night, she is sick of being stuck with the RDA and she sneaks out. Deep in the forest, she runs into a Na'vi boy.
Quartrich shoves his weapons into his pack as his squad loads up the helicopter behind him. His new body is somewhat familiar, despite being blue. He still has his scar and lethal eyes. He’s still my dad, even if I refuse to call him that.
My own body is still foreign to me: blue, tall, a tail, perked ears. I miss my human form, even if I was decaying, my body full of cancer. Quaritch found me when I was right on the brink, days away from dying. He told my mom he could help me, put me into an Avatar body like his where I could live longer. My mom was hesitant, she doesn't like Quaritch but she wanted me to have a life so she agreed.
Quaritch was hardly ever around growing up, he was way too career focused. He left my mom to do it all alone. But now, he has this newfound need to be a father. Maybe he feels guilty? Or maybe it's cause we're both blue. I don’t know, but either way he insisted I join him on Pandora since my Na'vi body will have no place on Earth. My mom didn’t want me to go but she had no choice; Quaritch always got his way.
Which means that I never get my way.
I cross my arms and stare at Quaritch. "I want to go with you."
“No,” he says gruffly as he jams his gun into it’s holster, “you’re not allowed out there.”
His voice echoes off the metal walls of the compound. “You can’t expect me to stay holed here!”
“Oh, yes I can.”
“I refuse to spend my life in this metal box!” I yell at him before lifting my mask and taking a puff of air. “It’s not made for me.”
“Your human body wasn’t made for you either, kid.” He doesn’t look at me when he says this but the words sting. I can’t help but think of my frail body and bald head. Quaritch turns and marches off towards the rest of his squad. I wish he would just let me out but he's so paranoid about the local Na'vi. He says they're dangerous.
"I'm going insane here!" I scream after him. He doesn't turn around as he disappears around the corner. God, sometimes I wish I had just stayed on Earth. Even if I had cancer, it's better than being here. At least there I had mom and friends. All I have here is a metal box, guns, robots, and psycho military freaks.
Speaking of, a group of them walk past me. Their camo uniforms are the only ounce of color in this place. They don't spare me a look as they pass but I know they see me. No one here dares to look at me. Maybe they're uncomfortable with my Avatar body? Maybe because Quaritch is my dad?
"UGH!" I scream, letting my frustration out. A few scientist looking people in white lab coats look in confusion. I stick my tongue out at them and take another inhale from my mask.
The thought of returning back to my small, windowless room, is enough to make me want to throw up. The hospital was better than this. My mom promised me it would be amazing here: the nature, the culture, the time with my dad (she forgot to mention that Quaritch happens to be an insane overprotective workaholic.)
I take a few steps towards my room before stopping. A few workers nearly ram into me. They step hastily over my tail, adjusting their hard hats before scurrying down the hall. Everyone here thinks I'm different. A freak.
I catch a glimpse of myself in the reflection of the steel walls. A strange blue figure stares back out me. I recognize the brown tank top and cut off shorts. But the swishing of a tail and the perk of ears; are still foreign. How can I ever know or even enjoy my new body if I'm forever trapped in here?
That's it. I'm going out. Screw whatever Quaritch has to say. I back track, immediately plotting the best way to escape the compound. Which soldiers to avoid, which ones I can bribe, and the best way to leave without a trace.
Quaritch might be furiouse but hey, he should've let me tag along.
~~~
Sneaking out was easier than I originally thought. I scuttle through an underground tunnel that the work cars use to get into the forest. I stay close to the walls, using my new sense of hearing to make sure no one is coming.
And of course, no one does. There probably isn’t a single person in this place that would notice if I went missing except Quaritch. I shove all those thoughts out my mind as I reach the end of the tunnel. Moonlight streams in from the end of it like a sigil of freedom.
My heart lurches in my chest. Finally, I can go outside. I take my mask off and tuck it into the waistband of my shorts. Chitters from animals I don’t recognize float through the tunnel.
I pause as I reach the archway that leads out into the night. The ground looks so soft, covered in greenery and plush plants. The trees are huge, they loom in front of me, making my heart soar. I haven’t been excited about something in so long.
I take one cautious step out, partially expecting for an alarm to go off. But nothing happens. I let a breath of relief followed by a little laugh. I’m outside!
I close my eyes and inhale deeply, smelling the freshness, pines, and the hint of something sweet that fills the Pandora air.
I open my eyes and take off into the forest. My eyes adjust naturally to the darker night and the two moons illuminate the path between trees. All the plants glow brightly and some even twirl as I pass by. All that time, I've been cooped up and missing all of this.
Animals call to each other as they swing through the trees. None of them approach me, they just swing by, seeing me as part of their ecosystem. A smile forms on my face as I keep running. I don’t think of anything. I just let myself enjoy this freedom, enjoy finally feeling at home in my new body
After awhile, I stop to catch my breath. My new body is filled with peace and serenity being in my rightful environment. I place my hand on a nearby tree and close my eyes. Maybe Pandora isn’t so bad.
I walk around the tree and halt, my breathe flying out of me. It’s a small clearing, covered completely by the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever seen. Long petals, all of them shining, some of them twirling slowly. A sweet aroma envelopes me. “Oh,” I gasp as I step slowly into the flower garden.
My mom would love these. She brought me tons of flowers when I was sick. My heart bangs at the sudden thought of her, alone in our small apartment. I reach forward and grasp a petal between my fingertips. It’s soft, much softer than I’d expected.
I think I could stay here forever and just get in lost in the beauty of it all. I mean, this is what my dad has kept me from? What is he so afraid of? I haven’t even seen a sign of the Na’vi…
“Bro, will you please just chill?” A voice cracks through the trees. I go rigid. It’s a boy’s voice. Young and adventurous. And definitely Na’vi. Great.
My hand shake nervously. I inch slowly to the ground before shuffling to the nearest tree where I stand and push myself flat against it, praying he won’t come this way.
“We need to go home,” another voice says, a more mature one, “it is past eclipse and dad will skin us.”
The voices sound like they're coming from my left but I don't dare to peek around the tree.
"Your such a wuss," the younger boy snaps. The voice is getting closer. My blood runs cold. I curse myself for never listening to Quaritch's lessons on how to fight.
Leaves rustle as the boys move closer to me. Please, please let them just walk by, I pray as I squeeze my hands together.
A branch snaps, piercing the air, followed by a loud smack and laughter.
"Ow," the younger voice cries, "Bro!" More laughter fills the air, presumably the older one. They must be brothers.
"You know bro," the young one starts, "I'll just do it anyway." The ground vibrates as footsteps sprint towards me. I go completely still.
The footsteps grow louder as the boy comes closer. I try not to think or breathe. There's a loud crashing from the other side of the tree. The boy runs through, sending a gust of air towards me. He didn't see me from my hiding spot.
I let out a breath of relief before patting the tree as though to say thank you. A moment of silence passes. My heart rate begins to slow. I take a few deep breaths. God, that was close.
I'm about to move away from the tree when a sharp spear shoves me back against the rough bark. A shocked gasp escapes my lips.
A boy stands before me, his fingers grasping the weapon and his amber eyes blazing. He's wearing a loincloth and woven headband where his ears lay flat against his skull. His lips are turned downward into a dangerous scowl.
My heart is banging against my chest. Quaritch was right. I shouldn't have come out here. I open my mouth to say something but nothing comes out.
Suddenly, my neck stings. I let out a hiss as blood trickles down my neck. He just cut me! The boy doesn't say anything as he pushes his spear harder against my skin.
Fear races through my body. I don't want to die like this. I inhale sharply, ignoring the pain in my neck. "Please," I whisper as I slowly lift my hands up, "I don't mean any harm. I was just looking at the flowers."
A flicker crosses the boy's eyes but it's gone in an instant.
"I just wanted to see the beauty of the forest," I continue, my hands shaking.
The boy lifts his head slightly. His pupils widen as he studies my face. His eyes trail the line of my tanktop and shorts in disgust. Evidence of skypeople.
At least if I die, it will be in this amazing forest.
The boy goes still and he tilts his head as if he sees something in my expression. I meet his gaze, hoping to seem brave when a jolt runs through me. It feels like I've been electrocuted. His eyes light in surprise.
"Neteyam!" The younger voice calls from further in the forest. "Bro, let's go!"
Neteyam. He doesn't look away from my eyes. My body begins to feel warm and calm, despite the spear being held to my throat. It's like my body recognizes him. Like we've meet him before. His tail swishes slowly behind him.
"I'm for real!" The voice is louder. He's headed this way.
The boy, Neteyam, quickly shoves his spear away and takes a step back. I should feel relieved that the weapon is away but all I feel is the empty space where he once stood.
He shakes his head briskly, like he's trying to clear his mind.
"Dude," the young voice yells again, but I can hardly hear over the ringing in my ears, "dad is for sure gonna skin us now."
Neteyam looks towards the sound of his brother's voice. My tail flicks behind me, an instinctive movement I've never done before.
Neteyam turns his head towards me. "If you like these flowers," he says softly, "you'll like the ones under the Hallelujah Mountains."
He runs off into the forest before I have a chance to reply. He rustles through the leaves. Then, the low rumble of his voice mixes with his brother's until both of their sounds disappear and I'm alone in the forest.
You'll like the ones under the Hallelujah Mountains. My lips split apart into a grin. The warmth in my stomach is still there, fluttering out to my fingers and toes. Like my body is a magnet, fighting to find him again.
I push off the tree and make my way back to the compound. I should be worrying about sneaking back in or getting caught by Quaritch, but I don't. All I can think about is that boy. Neteyam. Who is he?
I don't even care. All that matters is that I see him again.
~~~
