I also appear to have painted “Chad”, ‎تشاد , from every American High School movie plot. 😅This was a random model from a magazine (in hindsight his face wasn’t that interesting to paint) and a purposeful #MarleneDumas inspired painting technique...Fierce eyes and hair, colourful, flat planes of oil paint - soaked like #HelenFrankenthaler - esque. I realised the model also looks a little like #JFK. Now my mind is thinking of #DeKooning and #expressionism. That’s the thing with #painting, to my mind, it’s less about rules and more about principles - it’s all just blocks of colour until you create something. Paint first, ask questions later. From the lockdown files  

My earliest quarantine project. A self-portrait about confinement, feeling imprisoned even though surrounded by things I love, staying in one’s bubble, and the sensation of being suspended in time. In some ways spring 2022 seems like the glimmer of hope is finally getting brighter. In other ways it feels like the calm before the storm. I’m entering the season with equal parts trepidation and cautious optimism. The mask mandate was lifted here a while ago, and like everyone else I’m starved for some semblance of normalcy. I know opinions vary, and where you stand is your business [I’m not here to argue], but personally I still don’t feel safe in many indoor spaces (e.g., grocery store aisles) or crowded outdoor venues (e.g., concerts) unless I have a mask at my disposal. Even though I’m vaxed and boosted, masking for some situations is the “new normal” as far as I’m concerned. I’m glad the snow has melted so I can begin entertaining on my patio again, but chairs will remain spaced 6 feet apart while I continue to curb my touchy-feely nature. I’m longing for the day when I no longer feel like I’m endangering the vulnerable people in my life by kissing them on the cheek, or risking my own health by shaking a stranger’s hand. Given that new lockdowns and new variants are still regular news, I feel like that day is still very far away.

“Write Your Own Story”, 28 cm by 35 cm, Oil on Canvas, 2020. I wanted to capture the moments of laughter, though Bernadine Evaristo did say she had to learn to have a tough skin, growing up in Britain over the past decades... so maybe this moment fits her narrative journey. And her writing has a serious undertone too. I could continue this painting, but wanted to paint from live. 😀#GirlWomanOther 🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸 So, I discovered “Portrait Artist of the Year” #mypaotw 👨🏽‍🎨 have gone digital - with a weekly session, where artists (new or experienced) from all over the world can just join and create. It’s timed for 4 hours, with breaks of course, though I forgot about a work call I’d scheduled in the middle of it haha. This week’s portrait sitter was Bernadine Evaristo, a writer whose writing I did not know - but will definitely read now. Inspiring. She writes, what seems, alternative history - fiction, with a comical twist, but about serious subjects (such as marginalisation of black people in British history - “Girl, Woman, Other”, her latest book, won the 2019 #BookerPrize). She’s never before sat for an artist...Really interesting to hear her talk as she sits for her portrait -“there has to be a mix of comedy and tragedy” in her writing, a sense of humour - my kind of thing. I love painting quickly, yet don’t paint many portraits, so this was a challenge but an exploration. They do allow you a week to complete- but I’d rather stop painting now while the sitter is there, even if virtually. I was most interested in representing some of her individualism.
