they’re selling my grandma’s house. every part of it is texturally rich in memories in the way of grandparent houses, but when i think of it i mostly think of this big tree in the backyard. i don’t know what species it is and i should, but it’s the sort with branches that spread out wide and low to the ground so that it makes a dome of greenery. you’d crawl in underneath and enter a kind of leafy room of light and shadow separate from the rest of the world, and my brothers and i spent entire days in there. some parts were perfect for sitting and others for climbing—it was like someone had custom-built it for three small children. our preferred activity was lining up pokemon figures on different branches and trying to knock each other’s down using the tree’s little tiny fruits as projectiles.

Captain Confusion
A/N: Inspired by this video that makes me weep with its cuteness! I just had to write this okay 🥺🥺🥺 This is in the same universe as Homeward Bound, which happens after this story. Feel free to give it a read after this, if you haven’t already! ALSO should note that the lovely @ohmygoodie is my Sy partner in crime and without them this fic would not be made possible :)
Warning: mention of operations/hospitals, and a whole lot of fluff!
Tumblr media
It was a simple procedure and so it hadn't worried you too much, other than the usual fears when a loved one is under the knife while in the hands of trained doctors. Sy’s hernia had been authorised for operation only five minutes into the doctor’s appointment you had all but dragged him to, and scheduled for 4 days later. Not really much time to prepare mentally, but you knew it was necessary with your big bear of a man in pain. Despite the painkillers prescribed, he was walking with a limp and groaning in bed for all the wrong reasons.
In the waiting room, you and his Ma kept busy during the 45 minute wait by looking through magazines, talking about how the Captain’s quality of life will improve, and what kind of minor jobs you’ll have him do around the house while he’s recovering as you continue to work.
“I hope the recovery isn’t as long as some people have said. I know for a fact he’ll not want to be cooped up all day. If he’s anything, he’s stubborn” you sigh, knowingly.
Ma smiles, looking at you pointedly, knowing that she is in the presence of the only other soul who knows what is best for her son. “He knows better now that his health is his wealth. He’s got a lot more riding on being well now. After all, it’s not just him he’s gotta be there for anymore.”
“Yeah, I mean I always tell him, he’s not 25 anymore. Or even 30. I’ll need you to back me up, he does anything you say. I’m his equal, you’re his Mom.”
You both laugh a little, hers warm and kind, while yours tinges with the remaining hopeful nerves of an army Captain’s wife. You don’t like not knowing about your Sy, especially since you spent all those years apart, not knowing if he was safe, or even alive. The waiting, in any capacity, is the hardest part.
You’re flipping through a random tabloid magazine, when the surgeon in charge walks through to the waiting room.
“Everything went really well with Captain Syverson. He’s coming to from the anaesthetic and asking for his Ma?”
Ma grins before sucking her teeth between her lips watching as your mouth drops. You both move from the waiting area to follow the surgeon towards where your husband is resting. You speak under your breath, only wanting Sy’s Ma to hear you; “I hope he still remembers how to grovel after this.”
Tumblr media
Ma enters the room with you following her, arriving only a couple more corridors along from where you’d last seen him earlier that morning. He may not have asked for you but you were going to see Sy whether he wanted it or not. A grand push of the door allows it to swing open, and suddenly there he is. A little disoriented but has a large dopey smile plastered on his face as soon as he sees his Ma. His heavy head lolls to one side as he rests it on the plush hospital pillow.
“Hey Ma” he groans out as she bends over her large son to give his forehead a kiss, taking his hand in hers. He spends a moment just gazing at her for a while, the love he has for her evident on his face, as she tells him that everything went well, and that he can go home tomorrow.
It’s only after this tender mother and son moment, that he notices you.
“Ma.... why ya bringing a beautiful girl here when I’m like this...oh god I’m not wearing underwear Ma!”
His feeble attempt at trying to cover himself means that you actually end up seeing far more of him than you expected. Nothing you hadn’t seen before, but it definitely hasn't happened in front of his own mother before. The whole situation makes you blush and giggle a little as you try your best to avoid eye contact with Ma. You can only imagine the look on her face, and you don’t want to get any more involved with Sy’s naked form than you need to right now.
Rather than put you and your poor Sy through any further embarrassment, Ma speaks up.
“Oh darlin’, this is y/n. You remember her, right?”
And while he’s listening - or at least pretending to listen to his Ma fussing over him again - he’s just staring at you, gazing in awe as if you were the one to hang the stars in the sky.
“You are.... so pretty” he slurs, making you break out a genuine smile that he mirrors, glad that he was the one to make you look even more pretty.
“Well thanks handsome. How do you feel?” you perch on the edge of the bed and hold his hand. To him, the gesture feels warm and inviting - even if he doesn't know you, he recognises something about you in the comfort that you bring.
“Feel like shit. Oh fuck i said ‘shit’ in front of the lady” he whines again, scrunching his eyes closed as hangs his head in shame. It looks like he might even cry with the realisation that he’s made such a foolish impression of himself. It takes Ma shushing him and making him take a sip of juice from his bedside to calm down, dabbing his face with a cloth when his juice spills from his mouth.
“Oh Logan Daniel Syverson...what did they do to ya?” she lightly scolds as she helps clean up the mess he’s unknowingly created around him. That’s your Sy, a hurricane of mess that somehow fits into order just how he likes it.
You giggle a little more at his shameful expression, before he refocuses, giving you his undivided attention once more.
“How is it that ya know my Ma and we’ve never met? Or have we? ‘Cause I think i’d remember a face like yours”
“Well...” you start, tucking a piece of hair behind your ear to let him see your entire face, hoping it would jog his memory. As you do so, the ring on your fourth finger glints in the hospital light, and for the first time since you've entered the room, he’s noticed.
“Oh...man...knew a girl like you would be snatched up already. Whoever has the honour of being yours is a very lucky man.” He smiles softly, a wistful look in his eye, while makes you realise that you can’t wait for the drugs to leave his system, you have to remind him who you are and who he is, right this very moment.
“Sy honey... we’re married. You’re my husband, and I’m your wife. I think the drugs are making you more than a bit loopy.”
It’s his turn for his jaw to drop, his eyes are unblinking as he takes in what you’ve just said. He turns sharply - more than his doctor would have probably liked - to his Ma, and then back to you, and then his Ma again, waiting for one of you to burst out laughing at the prank you surely must be playing on him.
“Wha-? A wife? I have a wife?” you nod and he exhales a deep breath of air in amazement.
“YOU’RE my wife? Really?” you nod again and Ma smiles at you as she watches the scene of Logan meeting you all over again.
“Am I still in the army? I’m a Captain ya know”
“You left just a few months ago. You still work in the local camps, of course. You like it there, and you’re home every night and most weekends.”
“Does Ma like you?” You don’t even get a chance to finish as he turns to his mother “Do you like her? is she nice? Does she like your new kitchen? I built it y’know.”
You knew when you met, dated, and married him, that Sy was a Momma’s boy. He loves his mother so much, that her opinion will always mean the world to him.
Ma nods “You two are the sweetest couple. She’s the best addition to the family, gives you a run for your money alright. She’s my new favourite.” You get a soft hug from her as she says this, with her wrapping her arm around your shoulders and pulling you close. She’s always felt so grateful that her Logan found you, because my goodness did he love you ferociously, and he needed you in his life. You were the making of him, and the whole Syverson clan will forever be grateful to you for it.
"And where did we get married? If we really are married.” He continues his line of questioning.
“At the ranch, on your family’s land. it was such a special day. We had the reception there too. And we went to Italy for our honeymoon.”
Sy is basking in every word you say, praying it to be true, as if he could will it into existence if it hadn’t already happened, wanting badly to remember sunset kisses and italian food and beach days all spent with you. He perks up at the last thing you say, taken by complete surprise.
“Honeymoon?! Oh my god have we...ya know..?” A blush fades over Sy’s face, and even though you love his Ma, you really wish she wasn’t finding out so many details about your personal life today, like how your son rails you on the regular in many ways, and in many places. He must somehow remember or at least accurately imagine your past endeavours, as he grins like a little shit.
You smack his arm, lightly but with a firm hand.
“Be quiet, or the whole ward will know about our sex life” you threaten. “Yes we’ve had sex. i’d hope so given that we have a kid on the way.”
If Ma had had to deal with her son getting horny over his “new”wife, she was being fully compensated for it as she witnessed him fall head over heels in love with you, all over again.
“A kid?...Tell me ya not messing with me...are we really- I-” he swallows and his tears come even easier than before “We’re havin’ a baby?” With the sudden realisation, he turns to his Ma. “This beautiful woman right here’s havin’ my kid, Ma?” He looks between the two of you again, watching as you both nod and beam from ear to ear.
“You know you cried just as much when i told you for the first time too. i promise when the drugs are out your system it’ll all make sense again.”
Sy smiles, clutching your hand in his warm palm, almost scared to let go as the door is knocked and he feels you might be taken away. Instead, it’s a welcome visitor.
“Hey doc,” Sy greets the man who reenters the room, now freshly out of scrubs  to visit his patient - who if anything is now simply love sick, no hernia to be found. “This is my wife, and she’s having a baby.” he looks back to you with a quirk of his eyebrow “My baby?” You roll your eyes and he confirms it; “my baby.”
“Oh, congratulations...again.”
The doctor’s evaluation and explanations don’t take long, and while Sy is being informed, you start rubbing your belly as a form of self-comfort. You will need to remind your child that while their father looks incredibly stern and impossibly large, he is silly and goofy and already loves them with his entire being. Over the course of the afternoon, Sy talks with you while the anaesthetic wears off. It turns out they had given him a pretty high dosage based on his height and muscle mass, so he would be out of action for a couple of hours at least.
Tumblr media
“Oh, i have your ring” you pipe up before he starts getting too sleepy again, taking the thick gold band off of the necklace around your neck, placing it on his finger carefully.
“That feels better already” he sighs, as he begins to doze in and out of consciousness. Before he closes his eyes once more to rest peacefully, a small tear slides down his cheek, which you of course, notice. Sy has cried maybe 5 times in the time you’ve known him and three of those times have been in this very room.
“Honey what’s wrong? Are you in pain? i can call the doctor-”
“No i’m fine i’m fine i just-” he sniffs and tries to clear his throat from the sad, heavy pain he feels in his chest. “I’m gonna be real sad when I wake up from this dream. What if I can’t find you when I wake up?”
Oh your sweet, silly man.
“Bear it’s not a dream, I’ll be right here when you get up properly and we can go home and cuddle and I’ll heat up your favourite meal. I’ll be right there with you.”
“And the baby?” he asks, eyes wide. almost nervous to ask.
“Well they have to come too, they're with me. We can look at their pictures again so you can get reacquainted. And Aika will be so happy you’re back. We’ve been gone the whole day.”
“Aika!” your husband perks up, “Oh Aika, man....I love that dog..”
“I know you do bear, you just get some rest for now and then we can go home.”
Before you know it, he’s fallen back to sleep, his mouth wide open as he slumps against his pillow, completely out of it.
Tumblr media
It’s dark outside when Sy opens his eyes again, watching as his Ma passes you a small herbal tea in the dimly lit hospital room. Technically visiting hours are over, but no one was going to argue with the Captain’s family. You smile, and he feels like he can finally relax, in your presence
“Well, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes” he growls lowly, and you look up at him from your phone, beaming in surprise, glad that your husband had woken up feeling a bit more like himself.
“Oh hello again” you smile and squeeze his hand, his slow blinking already indicating a much clearer mind, and that he knows exactly who you are.
“Again? What’d I miss?”
“The drugs” he stops you mid-sentence for a sweet kiss, acting as though a minute more without your lips would be the source of his downfall. “Mmmh, the drugs made you so loopy, it was the sweetest thing, Sy.” You grin as he pulls you up beside him on the bed.
He raises his eyebrows, clearly with no recollection of any of the past events. Yet still, he smiles.
“Yeah? How’s baby?” he holds you close to his side, wrapping an arm around your waist so he can cover your tummy with his palm.
“They’re great. Glad to have daddy back and sane.”
You swear that as you say that, he starts tearing up again, this time however he doesn’t let them fall. He was openly weeping earlier, but you won’t tell him that. Not yet.
“Damnit. Must be something in these drugs they got me on.”
“Mm-hmm sure bear.”
You stay close that evening, both curled up on a hospital bed that is already quite a tight fit for your husband alone. But as always, he makes it work. You’re half on top of him, both of you fast asleep, when the nurses come to do their rounds. Ma had left just after he had woken up, sneaking off into the night to let the rest of the family know how her most middle son is keeping after the operation. You’d cuddled and doted on each other until you’d fallen asleep, Sy following not long after as he bid goodnight to you and your precious cargo with a soft kiss to your lips, and protective rub of your stomach.
He counts himself more than lucky to have something so good, that it would pain him to forget. He was living the life that he’d been too scared to ever dream of, and he couldn’t be more grateful.

The Irreplaceable Charlie Weasley: Pt. 2, Ch. 1
PART 2: THE YEAR OF MISCHIEF AND SNEAKING AROUND Chapter 1 - Summer at the Burrow
Nova
I have to admit that my Summer before going to the Burrow wasn't that bad at all. I managed to convince my mum to not visit our relatives in America, which already made things 10 times better. What made my Summer even better was the fact that a few days after we came and stayed at my aunt's in Scotland, one of her Abraxans had a baby!
Not only did I witness it, about which I still don't know how I feel as there was a lot of blood, but I got to stay at my aunt's for a week more to take care of the little guy. I decided to call him Angel since his wings gave a light yellow hue. He was the sweetest thing and the day before I left he managed to fly off the ground for the first time, which of course made me very proud.
While at my aunt's I wrote to Charlie and sent him one of the pictures my aunt took of Angel and me. I told him that I was there when he was born and that I wished he could witness it as well. It wasn't even a few days when Pip flew back with his response. He said that he was so jealous and wished he could be there as well and couldn't wait for me to come to the Burrow to hear all about it.
Charlie wasn't in the best of moods lately. As he brought home such good grades his mum found him very responsible and gave him the babysitting duty for his younger brother Ron and his sister Ginny. The only good thing was that Bill got an even worse job as he had to look over Fred and George and make sure the house is not on fire as their parents made a quick visit to one of their friends.
I couldn't help but feel sorry for both of them as I knew that their Summer was nothing like they hoped for on the train back from Hogwarts. Nonetheless, I couldn't wait to spend the last month of my Summer at the Burrow. I would plan tricks with Fred and George, tell bedtime stories to Ginny and play Wizard Chess with Ron if it meant spending some quality time with Charlie and update the list we've made in our First Year about which creatures were in the Reserve at Hogwarts, for which we were not supposed to know until our Third Year.
My dad felt so bad that he would only be able to see me for a few weeks that he bought me a brand new book on creatures that featured some that were recently discovered, along with some never before published notes of Magizoologist Newt Scamander. I shrieked as he told me all about what the book has to offer and decided not to tell Charlie about it as I knew I would finish reading it before I get to the Burrow and could lend it to him. And besides, I didn't want to make his Summer even worse.
A few days before my mum was supposed to accompany me to the Burrow, I couldn't help but feel a bit nervous as I was meeting Charlie's entire family. I only knew his brother Bill that I've met at Hogwarts and their mum, who picked them up when we came back from school.
I found my mum in the kitchen the morning of my departure. I stood in the doorway, rubbing my eyes as the sunlight from the kitchen window hit my eyes a little too bright for my taste. She was pacing back and forth and murmuring something to herself.
“Morning, mum.” I yawned.
She was still pacing, stopping for a second, turned to the counter where she had some sort of a list and wrote something down.
“Mum?” My voice louder now.
“Oh, Nova, darling. Good morning.” She beamed at me. “How did you sleep?” She looked down at the list and started scribbling something again.
“Good, a bit nervous.” I admitted.
For a second I thought she didn't hear me as there was no response, her quill still on the paper.
“Why are you nervous, sweetheart?” She finally put the quill down and came to me, looking concerned.
“Well, I will be spending a month with the Weasleys, what if they don't like me? What if Mrs. Weasley sends me back?” I frowned.
My mum let out a chuckle. “Sends you back? Oh, sweetheart, I'll be lucky if I ever get you back!” She brushed my hair with her fingers.
“You're one of her son's best friend and you helped him study, I bet she can't wait for you to stay with them as much as Charlie.” That put me in a better mood.
I remembered the moment when Bill told his mum that I helped Charlie achieve such good grades and she thanked me and gave me the biggest hug, one that I only received from my mum on similar occasions.
“Are you all ready and packed?” She interrupted my train of thoughts.
“Yes!” I nodded.
“Got your robes, your wand, your hat, your tie?” She was reading from her list and I nodded again.
“Now, remember I will meet you in Diagon Alley to go shop for your Second Year books. Molly and I agreed that it would be easier if you just go to Diagon Alley with them and I'll meet you there.” She smiled at me.
Speaking of Diagon Alley, I did convince my mum to go once at the beginning of Summer so that we could visit Tulip mum's shop. I couldn't convince her to buy all my books in advance though as the list for all the books we would need in our Second Year hasn't arrived yet back then.
Tulip's mum has the most beautiful little coffee shop. It was so cozy and everything looked so homey. My mum met Tulip that day and while I was sitting next to them, sipping on my tea I couldn't guess which of them was more excited to meet the other.
Besides seeing Tulip in July, I didn't get the chance to see either Tonks or Penny. I missed them both so much and I couldn't wait to find a compartment with them on Hogwarts Express on 1st September.
I did, however, correspond with them regularly. It made Pip happy as he was starting to get bored as I attempted to draw him from every possible angle and he just couldn't wait to get away from me. I also assumed that he missed my friends so I tried to use our family owl as little as possible to give him the possibility to visit all the friends he made. Lucky bloke!
Penny, so far, had nothing but an amazing Summer. Her beach vacation went great and she got tanned and her hair was now even more blonde than before because of the Sun. Apparently, she all sent us the same letter as I received a letter from Charlie the very next day as he questioned and tried to understand why going to the beach and do Muggle activities was better than being covered in mud while playing Quidditch.
Tonks' letters on the other hand were nothing but amusing. In a couple of them, she described all the pranks she pulled on her parents. In a few, she was groaning and complaining how their family cat will be the death of her and just last week she sent me a picture of her scratched arm and written next to it was Artwork by Merlin. I chuckled at the sweet name the cat had compared to his behavior.
“Don't forget Pip and your drawing books and the self-doodler Charlie gave you and the necklace, HE also gave you.” I rolled my eyes as she winked at me.
I've heard being a teenager wasn't a piece of cake but I thought it was like that because of our stubborn hormones, not parents being more interested in your love life than yourself. She has been going at it every time Mrs. Weasley and her corresponded and I've learned that if I just stay quiet as she gives her remarks, sooner or later she will give up. I did, however, make her mad when I tried to intercept one of the letters Mrs. Weasley sent her as I was sure they were already planning our wedding.
My mum enchanted all my belongings to fit in a small rucksack which I put over my shoulder. I held Pip's cage in one hand, Floo Power in the other as I stepped in our fireplace and was ready to appear in front of the Weasleys.
“THE BURROW!” I said clearly and disappeared in green smoke.
I coughed as I got ashes in my throat, stepping forward into Weasley's living room and putting Pip's cage down.
It was just like Charlie described to me in one of his letters, except I didn't feel it was too small or cramped. It was nice and homey and it smelled like Mrs. Weasley was baking cookies.
There were blankets folded on the sofa and a self-knitting jumper on the armchair. I looked around and it was not at all as I expected it to be. I thought that mum told Mrs. Weasley I was coming and thought someone was going to wait for me. If I'm honest, I was hoping Charlie would be there to greet me.
“Who are you?” I heard a rather grumpy voice. I turned my head and saw a boy with glasses and very curly red hair stand with crossed arms, inspecting me. I smiled.
“I reckon you're Percy.” I put my bag down and stepped closer, extending my arm. He looked at it in suspicion and rolled his eyes. “You're Charlie's friend, aren't you?” He shook my hand. I think he was not happy to see me.
“You can leave your things next to the sofa.” He showed with his hand. “I'm pretty sure mum said you'll be staying in Ginny's room or something.” He was just as strange as Charlie described him.
Before I could say another word to him I heard someone walk down the stairs. It was a little boy that could only be Ron. His hair reminded me that of Charlie's when he just woke up and came down for breakfast in the Great Hall. As he caught on to what was going on, his eyes widened and he gasped.
“Blimey! You're Nova!” He came closer, being rather bad at hiding his excitement. I offered him a hand just like I did with Percy. Ron shook it immediately.
“Your hair really is blue!” He couldn't stop staring at it. I giggled. I already felt much better as Ron definitely gave out more of a friendly vibe than Percy and was actually excited to see me.
“Dad's at work, mum's upstairs with Ginny. I reckon Fred, George, Bill, and Charlie are outside.” He smiled and pointed at the door behind me.
I didn't even have time to turn around when I heard my name.
“Nova! You're here.” Charlie ran to me and hugged me. “And right in time for Quidditch too!” He couldn't hide the excitement.
I saw Bill standing in the doorway, his hands crossed on his chest, smiling.
“Welcome back, Nova. I'll get mum. I'm assuming she doesn't know you're here yet.” He squeezed me into a hug and ran upstairs.
“Nova, these are Fred and George.” Charlie pushed the twins toward me.
“Hi, Nova.” One of them waved.
“Nice to finally meet you.” Said the other one. “Charlie talked about you all Summer.” He added.
“Ouch!” Was the next thing that came from his mouth as Charlie gently punched him in his arm.
“Oh, Nova, dear! You've arrived.” Mrs. Weasley came downstairs with the biggest grin on her face. She opened her arms even before she reached me and pulled me into a tight hug.
“Hi, Mrs. Weasley, thank you for having me.”
“It's Molly, dear. No daughter of Olivia's will call ME Mrs. Weasley.” She swung her hand and smiled.
“Where's your mum?” She put her hands on her hips and looked around.
That was a good question as she should've been here by now.
As if Molly's question made her appear, Weasley's fireplace burst into green flames and there was my mum.
“Oh, Molly it's so nice to see you. Nova, you forgot the jumper Molly gave you for Christmas.” She hugged Mrs. Weasley and waved with the jumper. I felt blood rush into my cheeks.
After they stopped chatting and my mum kindly refused lunch for the third time as she had to go to work, she came to me, gave me a tight hug, and whispered in my ear that I should behave and be nice to the Weasleys. She kissed my forehead and before I knew it, disappeared in green flames.
Charlie wanted to take me to play Quidditch with them immediately but Mrs. Weasley stopped him saying that Bill and he should show me around the house, make me feel at home, and take Pip and my bag up into Ginny's room.
Ginny's room wasn't really Ginny's as I recognized it as Charlie's immediately. Posters of Dragons and other creatures were everywhere and there was even one of a Quidditch team.
“I sleep in Bill's room ever since Ginny is old enough to sleep in a bed.” He said, scratching the back of his head, his cheeks pink.
“I love it!” I exclaimed as it looked almost the same as my room just a little messier and less blue.
I then got to see Fred and George's room and Ron and Percy's room. Bill's room was a bit bigger than the rest, of which Charlie was quite proud. I saw that Charlie was already making it half his own as there were Dragon posters on the walls above his bed.
Ron told me all about the family Ghoul and how I shouldn't be afraid if I hear someone sing and smash things in the middle of the night. He also showed me his Wizard's Chessboard that he proudly inherited from his grandfather and asked with his adorable big eyes if I would play a game with him after dinner.
Fred and George, of course, showed me their prized possession of fireworks, Dungbombs, and a small machine that I had no idea what it was for until I placed my hand on it and it shook me, making me jump backward. I bet Tonks and Tulip would be best friends with the twins.
After lunch, Charlie's wish of playing Quidditch with me finally came true. I got Percy's broom as according to him he didn't want to play with us anyway, as he handed it to me and went upstairs to his room.
I had so much fun playing Quidditch with the boys. It was Fred and George against Charlie and me and Bill was our referee. I knew Charlie was good at flying but as he caught the Snitch within the first five minutes of our first game did I realize just what a natural he was.
We played until Mrs. Weasley called us in for dinner. When we came inside, I saw a man already sitting at the table and I assumed that had to be Charlie's dad.
“Arthur this is Nova, Charlie's friend.” Molly nudged Mr. Weasley as we sat down at the table.
“Ah, right. You arrived today!” He remembered. “How were your travels?” He asked as he put some peas on his plate.
“Uh, fine sir. I came here on Floo Powder.” Mr. Weasley chuckled.
“Oh, but of course, silly me for asking. And please, it's Arthur and not sir.” Charlie and Bill chuckled this time, me not even realizing that I called him sir.
I was an only child and having so many people converse and pass the plates with food here and there was so fun to watch. Bill and Charlie almost fought for the last piece of pie, Percy left the table earlier as he said we were too loud and Ginny couldn't stop giggling when I put a pea in my nose and crossed my eyes. I think she would find Tonks' nose and hair changing even funnier.
After dinner, I took Charlie to what was now mine and Ginny's room and finally showed him the book my dad bought me. I told him all about it as he grabbed my hand and brought me back downstairs. We sat on the sofa as he turned the pages slowly, with sparkles in his eyes.
Every day after that was almost the same. Percy was annoyed by us. The twins pulled a prank here and there, making either Bill or Charlie chase after them. I helped them degnoming the garden and Bill later called us back outside to give us a gnome which Charlie tried desperately to befriend, despite the obvious refusal from the other party.
We played Quidditch almost every day and now decided to switch teams every other game as Charlie and I won so much that Fred and George thought it wasn't fair to them as they thought I wasn't as good as I appeared to be. The thing is, neither did I. My parents didn't let me have a broom so the first time I flew was in our Flying Class and even though I managed to call my broom on my first try I didn't think of myself as a good flyer, let alone a good Quidditch player.
In the evenings, when Charlie and I weren't reading each other's books, I was helping Molly in the kitchen as she was telling me stories of her Hogwarts days with my mum.
Ron beat me in every single chess game but he still thought there was space for improvement and even gave me a compliment saying I was getting better.
The twins kept asking how Hogwarts was and that they couldn't wait to meet Tulip and Tonks when I told them that I have friends that love pranks just as much as they do.
Every night when Ginny had to go to bed, I took her upstairs and read her stories from her The Tales of Beedle the Bard book, and even though I've read some of them more than once she didn't mind, as long as I read to her.
Most nights, when we were already supposed to be sleeping, Charlie and I snuck out of our rooms and sat on the bench in front of their house or we took one of the blankets from the sofa and placed it on the ground in the garden. We loved looking at constellations and shooting stars as we talked about our expectations of our Second Year, wondering how Tulip, Tonks, and Penny are doing, and couldn't help but admit that we couldn't wait for our Third Year when we would finally start Care of Magical Creatures.
Of course, we couldn't hide our excitement as we remembered that this year Hagrid was going to take us into the Forbidden Forest and Charlie couldn't help but wonder if he would go deep enough into the Forest could he find a Dragon. I chuckled at the idea, even though I couldn't help but wonder the same thing.
One night Bill heard us talking outside as he went down to get a glass of water. Instead of scolding us and telling Molly, he laid down next to us and reminisced at the time he was our age. He made me and Charlie laugh so much as he pretended he was 100 years old and started all his stories from his First and Second Year with 'when I was your age'.
Bill also loved watching me draw and gave me pointers where he thought I could do better, it was like having an art teacher that was wiser but without an ounce of talent for drawing.
I don't even know how else to describe the month I spent with the Weasleys. It seemed that my life kept getting better and better and I couldn't wait for what was in store for me and my friends in our Second Year. Charlie and I made a dare that Tonks will lose it again during the final exams, that Penny will scold us all the time, and that Bill will sooner or later find out that we have been sneaking into the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid.
I loved the Weasleys so much and if Pip wouldn't bring me a letter from my parents a couple of times per week I would have forgotten that I wasn't a Weasley. Well, that and the fact that I had blue and not red hair.
It was the best Summer and even better as I imagined it before coming to the Burrow. I had so much fun with Charlie no matter what we were doing and every time Bill joined us it was nice as I got to bond with him as well. Every night when I finally went to sleep, I couldn't help but think just how lucky I was to have met Charlie that day in the Courtyard.

Love Victor Season 2, Part 1
“Mom… Dad… I’m gay.” Victor says, truly exhaling for the first time since he kissed Benji in that motel room in Willacoochee.
Coming out right now probably wasn’t the best thing to do, especially after his parents announced that they were separating.
After Victor says the two words that change him in his family’s eyes forever, his mom stops talking to him. His dad hugs him, and says "Thank you for telling us hijo. I love you no matter what. I don't really care about grandchildren anyway."
Armando notices the visible disgust on Isabel's face and tells him to leave, just for now while his mom gets her shit together and learns that Victor is still Victor. Before leaving, Victor goes to his room and packs some clothes, his laptop, his iPad, and his phone charger. He’s sure to grab the fleece-lined denim jacket Simon gave him. As he packs, he hears a knock on his bedroom door. Pilar walks in and tells him she's sorry. She's sorry for not believing him when he said that he wasn't a cheater and that he never meant to hurt Mia. After Pilar leaves, he grabs his backpack, so that he has his stuff for school on Monday. His dad was okay with it but wanted to protect his feelings, in case his mom said something mean.
Subject: Coming Out
Simon-
You were right. I can’t control how people react when I tell the truth. Tonight was far from the perfect night for anybody. There were times when it was perfect, and times when it sucked.
I did it. I came out to my parents and sister. Mia knows. She was so angry with me, and I can say with almost certainty that she hates me now. She found out in the worst way possible: She saw Benji and I kissing in the courtyard :(
My mother isn’t talking to me and my father told me to stay with a friend until my mother figures out how to get her shit together.
In other news, Benji!!! HE BROKE UP WITH DERECK :) That’s probably the highlight of my night. He told me that he wants to be with someone who makes him feel like he can be himself, and that's enough. Then he said “That's how you make me feel, Victor”, and then we kissed.
I’m supposed to call him tomorrow, but I think I might ask to stay with him because  I have never been to Felix’s place, and so I don’t think that I can stay there, so Benji it is.
On top of everything, right before I came out, my parents announced that they were separating, so YAY -_-
Love, Victor
Victor leaves, and the first person he calls is Benji. When Benji picks up the phone, Victor starts crying. “Hey, what's up, why are you crying?,” Benji asks, “Are you okay?”
“Hey. I know I said I would call tomorrow, but I just came out, and my mom won’t talk to me, and my dad told me that I should leave for a while to stay away from my mom. Pilar is mad at me for being dishonest to Mia, and Adrian has no idea what's going on. Before you, I had only come out Simon. I’m considering going to his place because I can’t go to Felix’s and I’m just so scared." Victor replies breathlessly in between sobs.
"Victor, I know you don't owe me anything at all, but I thought that I was pretty clear about the fact that I wanted an exclusive relationship. I also know that we aren't even official yet, and this is probably really stupid.”
Victor begins laughing, and right now, it is kind of a half-laugh, half-sob.
“What's so funny?" Benji asks
“I'm not with Simon. He's my friend, and he has a boyfriend. I went to visit them in New York after the trip to Willacoochee and it was possibly the best weekend of my life. It helped me come to terms with the fact that I am gay. He also happens to be in college, and I only have eyes for one cute boy. You might know him. His name is Benji Campbell."
"Oh really? Tell me more about this Benji fellow." Benji replies flirtatiously
“Well, he has this hair that you could just run your fingers through all day. These lips that you could kiss forever. He has really nice biceps and triceps and he is the nicest boy you will ever meet. He makes me want to stop time just to talk and kiss and cuddle. He sings, and oh my god his voice could come from an angel. He plays guitar, too. He once drew a picture of me that I keep with me at all times. This picture makes me wonder what other hidden qualities he has. He is sweet, and just a wonderful person all together. He's a romantic, he's funny, and his smile could light up a room. When I look into his eyes, I feel like I could drown because I never want to look away. He has tight t-shirts and a stupid smile.”
"Well I know this one boy who's kisses could change someone's life. He makes me happy on the worst nights ever and makes me  wonder if I was living before I met him." Benji replies with a smile you could hear.
"Benji, how did I ever get so lucky to wind up in the arms of someone as amazing as you? I called you because you make everything better, and you just light up my life. Oh, and about Simon, it's Simon Spier, the one who rode the ferris wheel until his secret email pen-pal came to him. He and the same boy, Bram, live together in New York with some really awesome roommates.
“Holy shit Victor. That's awesome that you know Creekwood's gay legend. I’m going to walk to your place, and you can come stay at mine, okay?”
“Okay”
When Benji arrives at Victor’s building, Victor is happy and relieved to see him. Victor stands up and Benji wraps him in a tight hug, kissing him on the cheek and stroking Victor’s hair. The first place they walk to is Brasstown, because they need coffee. They make latte art meatballs. “So ugly, but so delicious.” Victor says with a laugh.
“Are you going to make fun of me forever for that?,”Benji says
“I’m not making fun of you, just joking because it's true.”
At this Benji kisses Victor sweetly on the lips, making both boys smile.
“See, you know how to make my day better.” Victor says
Ding ding
“Who’s that”
“Probably Simon. I emailed him before I called you, so he’s probably replying to that.”
Subject: Re: Coming Out
Wow! I’m so proud of you Vic, for coming out. You are so brave! Bram says he is really happy that you came out, and finally said those two words. Not long after I came out to my family, my mom, who is a therapist, said to me “You get to exhale now, Simon. You get to be more you than you have been in... in a very long time. You deserve everything you want.” Now I’ll say the same thing to you, Victor. You can exhale now, you can be you.
I’m so sorry to hear about your parents separating.
On the other hand, I’m sorry that your mom reacted the way that she did. I do think your dad is trying to protect you, and I kind of agree with him, but maybe he should have spoken differently.
BENJI!!!!!!!!! AHHHHH! YAY. He broke up with his boyfriend for you! Now that says something
(A message from Bram.)
Now tell me… What’s the latest with you boys, because I assume he’s with you as you read this. ;)
Love, Simon
“Is that my name? Does Simon Speir know who I am?” Benji asks
“Oh he knows all about you. How you wear tight t-shirts and have a stupid smile. He knows that I was both sad and happy when I found out you had a boyfriend because it took you off the table, and I really liked you, even then. How I kissed you in the motel room. How we kissed last night.”
Benji blushes at this entire speech, because now he knows that Victor liked him, even in the beginning. “Is my smile really stupid?”
“Yes, but in a cute way!” Victor says, a huge grin plastered on his face.
Victor leans down and gives Benji a soft kiss on the lips. “What are we? We both admitted we have feelings for each other and we keep kissing, but we haven’t discussed us yet, if there even is an us.” Victor asks Benji.
“I don’t know. I’m all in if you are.” Benji replies.
“All in, like boyfriend?”
“If that’s what you want”
“That's what I want”
They stand there kissing for almost ten minutes, but ten minutes was the difference between night and morning. Sarah walks in and sees them kissing. “Seriously? No canoodling by the coffee maker!” She yells, and the two boys break apart.
“It’s already morning?” Victor asks, and looks at Benji, adding “I don’t have any of my work t-shirts.”
“Hey Sarah, can we go to get our shirts, we’ve been here all night?” Benji asks, realizing that they were both still in their suits from the night before.
“Whatever, you have fifteen minutes before your shifts start.Take my car. Come back ASAP!” Sarah replies with an eye role.
Victor drives to Benji’s house, following the directions Benji was giving him, and he realizes that he has never seen Benji’s house before. “You have a really nice house. Very home-y.” Victor says
“Oh thanks. My room’s back here. You can leave your bags on my bed and I’ll get you a shirt.” Benji says, noticing Victor is staring at him, and  adds, smiling, “What are you staring at?”
“My cute boyfriend with the stupidest cute smile.”
At this Benji smiles and kisses Victor. “We need to get ready for work.”
“Ugh, fine.” Victor says
After getting dressed Benji goes to his kitchen to make them some breakfast. For breakfast, they have egg sandwiches. They leave to go to work, which is surprisingly busy for a Saturday morning. “I just wanna kiss my boyfriend!” Victor says, groaning.
“Hmmm, who is this mystery man you’re talking about?” Benji replies with a smirk.
Victor stands up straight and then leans down to kiss Benji. “What did I say about canoodling by the coffee machine?” Sarah yells at the two boys from the back room.
They separate, frowning, and get back to work. The boys are just happy to be together finally, after months of crushing on each other. “You know that weekend that I disappeared? The one after I kissed you the first time?” Victor says
“Yeah”
“I wasn’t with my dad on some ‘Boys’ trip’. I was in New York, visiting Simon Spier and his boyfriend and their roommates. We went to this gay bar, and it was truly the best night of my life. I went on stage at this drag show, and I was super nervous, but I was so happy.”
“Woah”
“And that denim jacket used to belong to Simon.”
“Well shit.”
Dereck walks in the store angrily and yells at Benji "You sure move on fast!"
"Leave my boyfriend alone. He didn't do anything wrong. You aren't in a relationship with him and if he wants to be with someone other than you, then that's his choice. You don't get to burst into our lives yelling at us because he broke up with you. You didn't appreciate him or all of the cute, romantic, things he did for you and you made him anxious. He was scared to be himself around you and obviously you couldn't tell how amazing he is the person he really is." Victor yells at Dereck.
"Vic, babe, calm down. He's just being a dick because I broke up with him. He doesn't deserve our time." Benji says calmly to Victor while trying not to smile or grab his face and kiss him.
All of his resistance just wasn't enough, and Benji wraps his arms around his beautiful boyfriend's neck and kisses him. Dereck rolls his eyes and says threateningly "This isn't over. I will be back, and both of you will regret this."
Victor and Benji are nervous about Dereck's threat, but they don't let that hold them back. But then when Victor turns his phone back on, he sees a text Felix sent at 3 AM telling him to check the Tumblr.

Altered: Epilouge
The next morning each of them woke up in their beds. Curse, Ravio, and Legend were all returned to Legend’s house. Time woke up the next morning in bed at Lon Lon Ranch to a cry from Malon, happy he was back. Sky awoke in the still recovering Castle in his room and immediately sought out Zelda to tell her what had happened, who he'd seen. Warriors awoke in a similar way, hoping the trouble he'd be in back in his own home would have dispersed.
Wind and Tempest awoke in the bedroom they would now share, with Aryll running in crying happily that her brothers were home. Wild woke up alone in his house in Hateno village and sighed. Twi too woke up in his home alone.
Hyrule was returned to his home and awoke to go talk to his Zelda's, they deserved to know where he'd been. Four and Maverick awoke in Fours house/ forge.
Three months later
Maverick crossed out of the shadow realm and stood in front of the farmhouse at Lon Lon Ranch. They've planned a little party to celebrate the end of their adventure and everyone was coming. Even Savage and Noble had been convinced to come.
The past few months had been good, Four had resumed his job at the forge and was making weapons, cups, cutlery, and just about everything you could from metal. Just to have something to do Maverick had decided to take up some metal engraving, his shadow blades were small and precise enough he never made a mistake the embellishments be added to his lights products had been very popular with the locals.
Officially the locals knew him as Fours brother, having travelled to visit his brother and deciding to stay. This suited him just fine, because I'm a way he felt like he was.
He was still working on figuring out who he wanted to be, he'd rediscovered a passion for reading and spent much of his down time in books. And he was living a good life, he didn't like to be around people but the townspeople were kind and the quiet retreat of the forge were enough to keep him doing fine.
Four stepped up next to him and opened the door and gave his friend a mischievous smile. It was time to see everyone again.
They walked in and pretty much the entire hang had already arrived. Malon was busy bustling around, Wild was in the kitchen cooking with Legend passing out plates and forks.
The others were sitting at the table telling stories from the past month. At the moment Warriors was dominating the conversation as bombastic as ever.
"Training the new army is going much better than I'd thought it would. A good number of men came from across Hyrule when we put out the call for soldiers. We compensated the families of the old army, and Zelda and I have been personally visiting them when possible and set things right. It's not perfect but we're working towards perfection. Soon the new army will be fully trained and it'll be business as usual." Warriors said gesturing.
"A whole army trained in 3 months? Only you could do that 'captain'." Hyrule mocked laughing at his own joke, the others cracked up as well and then noticed the two new entrants into the house.
"It's good to see you again." Time intercepted them as they headed to the table. He looked different, almost younger with the armor and like a burden had been lifted.
"Happy to be here." Maverick replied forcing eye contact, no longer scared of it.
Four and Maverick took seats at the end of the table were Wind was regaling Ravio and Curse with tales from home. He was in the middle of talking about their most recent adventure with Tetra fighting of an enemy horde of pirates.
"It really was amazing. He's getting much better at controlling his powers, the whole fleet was swept up in a storm and delayed by a week. By the time they reached us they were almost too tired to fight." Tempest shifted uncomfortably at the mention of him but quickly switched to bravado.
"Don't pretend like it was your idea, it was my plan that saved you when they tried to take you hostage." He pointed out very self assured.
"Yes because calling down lightning is exactly what I would have done, you know considering I was inches away from the guy, that was real safe." Wind shot back.
Everyone got a kick out of that laughing at the twos “arguing”.  By then the table had been set and they were just waiting for their last guests to arrive. Savage and Noble were the last to arrive but when they did there was a noticeable difference. Whatever injuries they had suffered from fighting Maverick were completely healed.
Noble was of course dressed in his best, his tunic and cloak were high quality and his braided hair was free of any and all dirt, decorated with what appeared to be ribbons, and peculiarly enough a golden feather. Savage was himself. Although apparently living with Noble was a good influence on his as his hair and clothes were clean and free of blood stains, though his tunic still had some characteristic tarrering, the dark wolf pelt wrapped around his shoulders.
Maverick got up and greeted them first, gulping slightly. "Hey so, I'm sorry for what happened while I was under Callous's control. I don't really remember what I said or what I did but I know we fought, and I'm sorry."
He squirmed waiting for a second. He knew whatever fight they'd had he'd won much to his own surprise. But had no idea how they'd treat him now.
"It wasn't you." Savage replied gruffly. "No doubt you would have never chosen to attack us if not for that bastard, I'm only sad I wasn't there to see him die. I won't hold any grudges, as long as you don't hold any against me."
Maverick unconsciously touched his neck where scars of wolves teeth lingered and nodded. "You did what you had to do then, Eternal was the one to blame, not you."
Savages features softened a little, and gave Maverick a look one could almost call enduring. "But if we ever fight again don't think you'll win. You proved you can win a fight for once, but don't get cocky."
Maverick nodded, his face determined..even though he had been under someone else's control the skill had been his own, he was a better fighter now and not a scared one at that.
Noble gave him a look and with his scratchy voice just said, "it's good to see you not in a fight."
The last two sat and the meal started. Despite the term "little party" they'd gone all out. Stew, various meats, pies and cakes had been made. Skewers of fish and roasted vegetables, all served with cold refreshing Lon Lon milk of course.
The meal was amazing, everyone was in a good mood. And after almost an hour they started cleaning up and they retired outside to enjoy the sunset. They sat in the field with colors streaming across the sky, orange and pink and yellow.
“I'm glad everyone’s here. It’s great to be home, and to rest. Even if Malon has been keeping me busy around the farm.” Malon laughed him as Time continued. “But I’ve missed all of you. Our adventures touring your worlds and my own, even though we had tough moments, I will always treasure that time. It was different but relieving to have others along for the journey this time. Thanks to you all I was able to return home alive, and in one piece this time.”
Time shifted as Malon stood to stand next to him. “We have a little surprise for all of you.”
Malon stood in side profile and creased down her shirt, showing just the beginnings of a baby belly. The crowd rioted! Everyone was thrilled, that after everything Time was gonna have a family, and he’d found the peaceful life all of them were still searching for.
After a round of congratulations and everyone calmed down Four and Maverick stepped up.
“Well we can’t compete with a new baby but we do have a present for everyone.” Four held up a bag and removed from it a bangle about an inch wide. Simple silver metal but it was inlaid with a triforce, one corner of which was colored green. Maverick began to pass them out as his light continued. “Maverick and I made these together. I shaped the band and he did the engraving. After all its the spirit of courage that unites us so we figured we’d make a physical reminder of that. Something to make sure we don’t forget each other.”
“And for the darks, we may not be spirits of courage, but we’ve all shown we’re not cowards either. So we made these.” The bangles were identical to the ones they’d given to the other except the corner of the triforce was the color of each of their eyes. He’d painstakingly made sure to find paints to match each of them. “We’re not like the lights but not completely different. And i thought this would be a good way to remember them.”
Maverick pulled the last one out, its corner a brilliant blue and slipped it on.
“They’re beautiful.” Noble said slipping is on and admiring the glinting metal. “You matched it perfectly.”
____________________________________________________________________________
The rest of the evening passed quickly, they made a campfire out there under the stars in Lon Lon Ranch. Sharing stories and enjoying one last night together. They talked well past midnight. And eventually guests began to leave. Tempest and Wind traveling back to their seaside home. Curse tacking Hyrule home before returning for Legend and Ravio, promising Malon he would make her a good deal to sell her Lon Lon milk in the other hyrule, offering a generous cut.
Noble and Savage stayed much longer into the night but eventually left as well, bound for bed, napping apparently being something they’d taken to recently now that the adventure was over, no doubt they had plenty of sleep to catch up on.
Twilight and Wild were staying at the ranch for a little while so they also went up to their rooms until only Four and Maverick remained.
"It's time we went home." Maverick said standing from the couch he and Four had been sitting on as they chatted with Time and Malon.
"You're welcome to stay here tonight if you want. You know we have the room." Malon offered, but the two refused.
"We'll be home in seconds, and there's nothing better than your own bed." Four said as he also got ready to leave.
"I can't argue with that." Time smiled and caught them before they could vanish. "Remember you're always welcome here, whenever you want to drop in, please do."
"We appreciate it." Four answered as story disappeared into the shadows and reappeared in a room with two bunk beds and one single bed off on its own.
Maverick flopped down on the single bed as Four looked pensively at the bunk beds as if trying to decide where to sleep.
Eventually he picked the bottom bunk of one bed and laid down. And everything was calm in the house, darkness fell over the room and the two lapsed into sleep, their adventure finally over.

Thirty, Flirty, and Aubergines (Lily/James, Bakery AU)
A/N: Here’s my “Valentine’s Day drabble”...five days and five thousand words later. This is a gift for my funny little valentine @ghost-of-bambi, even though I spoiled this whole story for her forty-five seconds after I had this idea, and even though I make her stay up way too late all the time, and even though I have not yet booked my flight to visit Flamingoland. You are a star and a wonder and my heart explodes at your friendship and also that you laugh at my jokes. Kissseshugs&etc
When one is co-owner of bakery, it's an integral thing not to overindulge in treats.
Usually, Lily is quite good at this sort of thing. Even when said sweets are some of the best England has to offer (in Lily's own humble opinion). Even when she's come up with something fantastic and new, and has spent hours upon hours perfecting it, and its eventual shiny, delicious presentation begs bite after bite. Even when it's been a grueling shift, she's been elbow-deep in flour and buttercream since four, and collapsing atop a giant mound of shortbread seems just the thing.
And even on days like today—Valentine's Day—when the bakery door seems to be on endless revolve, welcoming in a steady stream of cloyingly sweet lovers, breezily nonchalant boyfriends who poke at the first red confection they see in the display case and beam with pride as if they've done something mighty, and the occasional single saunterer who—like Lily herself, no matter how content they are with their current relationship status—may need the bolster of a beautiful little bon-bon to make all the rest seem a bit more bearable.
Yes, Lily is quite good at tempering her consumption of sweets…except when the treat comes in the form of one tall, sumptuous, messy-haired patron.
Then, quite frankly, she immediately goes to slosh.
"Li-ly," Mary sings, poking her dark head in through the swinging kitchen door. Lily is just finishing sprinkling a dash of edible confetti atop a fresh two dozen heart-shaped cupcakes. "Can you pop out here quick?"
"What?" Lily replies distractedly, frowning down at the single cupcake whose frosting teeters off to the left. She tries to nudge it with her piping bag, then gives up and moves that one to the back of the tray. She turns. "Mary—"
But her partner is already gone, vanished to the front of the shop once more.
Lily sighs, grabbing the fresh tray with both hands and stepping forward until she's pushing out the swinging kitchen doors—which hits her arse with a sturdy smack as she skitters to a halt at the sight of James Potter leaning against the bakery counter.
"Hi," he says, giving her that swoon-worthy, lopsided grin of his, the tiniest of dimples creasing in his warm brown skin.
Yum.
Lily stands up straighter, telling her thrumming heart to cool it, and gives a jaunty smile of her own.
"Hi there." She steps forward on her comfy trainers, suddenly inordinately grateful that she'd thrown on a cute top and some perky red lipstick earlier to fit with the holiday spirit. She bends, sliding the tray into the cupcake display, ignoring Mary's amused smirk from the other end of the counter. Lily takes her time before facing him again. "This is new," she says, and checks her watch. "I've never seen you in here past nine."
"Glad to see me?"
"That pretty face of yours? It'll do. Abruptly keen on a four p.m. latte and scone, then?"
"Close," James says, leaning his luscious forearms—revealed by the artlessly ruched up sleeves of his white button-down—against the counter. "As it happens, I am in dire dessert straits."
"Oh?" The bright, happy thing that has been spiraling inside Lily's chest at his unexpected arrival abruptly pops and throbs. "Let me guess—girlfriend isn't pleased with her Valentine's Day gift, and you're hoping to buy a dessert to compensate?"
In the approximately two months since James Potter had first dropped into the bakery one harried winter morning for a latte and breakfast pastry—and during his subsequent numerous visits, at least twice a week since then—Lily has managed to glean a healthy dose of information about him. More than just that he likes his lattes strong and his pastry fruity (though he does), she also knows he works up the road in the big posh building made of full glass doing marketing for his family's company. He likes dry humour comedies and the theatrical wonder of professional wrestling. He has a brother named Sirius, a cat called Algernon, and a phone filled with pictures of both, which he shows off generously. His birthday is in March, his favourite colour is green, and in all this time—all this time—that he has been coming into Lily's bakery and flirting shamelessly with her, he has never once mentioned a girlfriend.
Lily's not-so-small crush has thus flourished with great gusto, gentle winds of affection feeding the flames with each tempting interaction, only to be brought up short here, now, with one single afternoon's visit and the possibility that this may not be what she'd thought.
James tilts his head, giving her an accessing look. "Is that the sort of bloke you get in here today?"
Lily gives a jerky shrug. Answer the question. "One of the sort."
"Your art is wasted on them," he declares, and says it with such firm earnestness, Lily is certain a scarlet flush begins to creep up her neck. He does not seem to notice as he reaches an arm around to pull his phone from his back pocket. "Alas, this is woman trouble, but my specific lack of a girlfriend seems to be a key part of the issue. See?"
Lack of a girlfriend, Lily hears with something akin to relieved euphoria, and she takes the phone when James passes it over to her, glancing down at the lit-up screen.
It's pulled up to a text conversation. At the top, the contact is in big, bold letters.
M U M
"A-ha," Lily says, heart beginning to bubble again, though that in itself is exasperating. This is meant to be a light, easy little crush—she should not be this relieved. "That sort of woman trouble."
James nods solemnly and motions for her to read.
At precisely 14:39, he had sent the following:
happy v day mum
Lily's lips quirk. How predictably James to toss out the offhand sentiment, and how greedy Lily would be for even that much...though lord knows he isn't going to be winning awards for his artful texting prose or brilliant grammar any time soon.
At precisely 14:41, he'd received back:
No day is a happy day when I am squandering my best grandmothering years because my feckless children have denied me the greatest joy a person can know. You are too handsome to be this cruel.
Then there are three emojis: a weeping face, an angry face, an aubergine.
An aubergine.
Lily snorts loudly.
"Ah—ah." She covers the sound with a cough, burying it in a daintily curved knuckle. "That's...quite a guilt trip you've got there. Your mum has a way with words."
"And emojis," James mutters, taking the phone back as Lily laughs in earnest. "So now you see what I'm up against."
"At least she's called you handsome."
"She takes full credit for that, too. Something about the privilege of procuring her prime genes and how grateful I ought to be that she only dropped me on my face as an infant the once." He slips the phone back into his pocket, gives her a cheeky head tilt and a twinkle of warm brown eyes from behind thick-framed specs. "So this is where you come in."
"To agree that she dropped you on your face the appropriate amount of times?"
"To provide me with something that might make her momentarily forget that I haven't yet replicated that face in the form of a human spawn," James corrects, but then he pauses, leaning forward. "Though, by all means, that first one too."
Lily's chest squirms happily. She gives his undoubtedly handsome cheek a playful little pat, but spins on her heel and keeps her red-stained lips shut. She grabs a take away box from the shelf behind her, then turns back to James, whose smiling face is lit up by the dessert display case.
"So"—she prods open the cardboard box, pushing in the tabs—"exactly how many desserts do you reckon make up for your severe lack of procreation?"
James plays at pondering this.
"Well." He taps at his chin. "See, I reckon this is more a 'quality' than a 'quantity' issue, actually."
"Is it? Well, then you have come to the right place." Lily grandly waves a hand over the case. "I am very talented, see."
James smiles. "I'm aware." Then he claps his hands together. "So. One of everything, please."
"One of—" Lily snorts. "Hilarious. What happened to 'quality not quantity'?"
"That's what I'm doing," James returns, and Lily squints in amused confusion at how straight he keeps his face while continuing the joke. "As we've already affirmed, you're very talented. So how am I meant to discover which desserts are the best of the best if I don't try each and every one and choose from there?" He reaches into his pocket again, this time pulling out his wallet. He plucks a jaunty blue credit card out and thrusts it towards her. "One of everything, please."
Lily pushes away his card, rolling her eyes. "Ha-ha. Very funny. What's she keen on? Maybe a tart? Chocolate—"
"One"—jab, jab goes the card again—"of each. Please."
"James."
"I'm good for it. I swear. Go on, swipe through. I'll sit right over there"—he pokes the card briefly towards one of the few tiny tables in the corner of the shop—"and try each and every one."
Lily drops her hands to her hips. He's still not breaking. The stupid handsome face is watching hers in expectant pause. But he can't be serious.
"You're going to sit right there"—she cocks her head towards the table—"and eat thirty different desserts?"
"Sample thirty different desserts," James amends, and pats his slim tummy. "Must be mindful of what will fit, naturally. But it's a scientific thing. Very methodical. Has to be done proper. One by one, each and every one." He lifts an eyebrow at her. "For my mother. To stop the aubergines. I have to stop the aubergines, Lily."
"That's—" She lets out a laugh. Shakes her head. But still—still—he remains unmoved. She lifts the cardboard box again. "I'm packing you four desserts. A perfectly reasonable, high quality sampling—"
"Mary," James calls, eyes never leaving Lily's. He lifts his credit card higher. "Your partner is refusing to sell me thirty desserts."
"You—"
"I'll take that!" Mary cries, swooping in from the other end of the counter, bumping Lily aside so she can pluck James's card straight from his fingertips. She turns to Lily with a gimlet-eyed stare. "Are you out your mind? Serve the man!"
"Yes," James agrees. "Serve the man."
Lily glares at them both, lunging for James's card. "He's not—he's being a loon, he doesn't want thirty desserts—"
"I do," James says again. "I really do."
Mary waves her hand about, determinedly keeping the card from Lily's searching grasp. "Do you hear that? He's confirmed his order. We are a fledgling business, Lily Evans. We do not turn away a good man's good money."
"Thank you," James pipes in again. "I am a good man. I have good money."
"Shut up," Lily returns, huffing in exasperation. "This is so—"
"I'll just pop over there, shall I?" James says, eyebrows raised at her. "To the table? I imagine you have some kind of tray for this sort of thing."
"As a matter of fact—"
"Go on, we'll bring everything right over!" Mary chimes in, looking positively delighted by all of this. "We're even running a Valentine's special: Buy thirty desserts, get one gorgeous, stubborn redhead free."
"Perfect," James says, and though Lily still cannot understand what kind of extravagant nonsense stick slapped him upside the head that afternoon to make him think this was even a remotely sensible idea, she feels her skin prickling with a rosy blush anyway. But James has already turned for the table, marching to the corner of the room with determined strides.
"What are you doing?" Lily hisses to Mary once he's out of earshot.
"What are you doing?" Mary hisses back, poking Lily in the side with James's card. "Your swoony treat of a man wants to buy our shop out of pastry, and you're saying no? I can't decide whether that's a worse business decision or a worse romantic decision!"
"It's not either! He's just...well, honestly, I haven't the faintest what he's doing, but it's not—" Lily waves her hands in irritation, taking a quick glance over her shoulder to see that James has indeed sat himself down at the table in the corner, folding his hands neatly upon the tabletop in a patient pose. He looks delicious and adorable and he's buying all her desserts which he thinks are art, and she wants to snog him more than she wants to breathe. "This is ridiculous. Give me that card."
"Not a chance," Mary shoots back, and whips her hand behind her back again. "For fuck's sake, Lily, I heard the word aubergine. So go get the man his desserts, and maybe you can finally enjoy yourself a bit of fruit!"
"Shhh—god, Mary—" But her partner has already flounced back over to the register, where Lily sees she is quick at work in charging James's card.
Thirty desserts.
He wants thirty desserts.
He's clearly gone mad.
But with Mary swiping a black hole onto his charge card, Lily can't very well refuse to serve him, even if she can't figure out his game. After a moment's huff of frustration, she grabs one of the empty baking trays from the kitchen and heads for the display case. The four-tiered unit is packed full with Lily's hard work from the morning—tartes and chocolates and confectionaries with elegant designs and perfectly coiffed decor (save the one clumsily frosted heart cupcake—James is getting that one, because she's spiteful). It's a lit up pedestal for her daily achievements, and she carefully picks out one of every dessert they currently have on display.
The collection makes up a rather dazzling tableau. With all of them standing together, Lily gets a little burst of pride. She is an artist at work, and it tickles her straight down to the heart that he's been impressed enough to notice it, to make the comment. All of this tickles at her in a way that she was not expecting to be tickled on a busy Valentine's Day afternoon with a dish of a man, his guilt-tripping mother, and an emoji aubergine.
But she's already given her protests. What else is a girl to do except roll with it?
James stands up to help her when he spots her coming over with the tray, but Lily deftly outmaneuvers him to drop the full platter atop the tiny tabletop herself. His long fingers casually fall to the small of her back as they stand beside each other and marvel at the table full of desserts. Lily turns her head to look up at him, only to find him looking at her too.
Their faces are close. So close.
She looks away first.
"Your good money has procured you good desserts, my good man," she says flatly, slipping an errant strand of red hair behind her ear.
James chuckles. "Excellent. Now if I only had someone to taste them with…"
Lily plucks a single plastic fork from her pocket, jabbing him lightly in the chest with its flimsy prongs. "Sorry, old chap. Science is a lonely game."
James lifts a hand to catch the fork—but catches a few of her fingers along with it.
Lily's whole arm immediately feels encased in pure, tingling warmth.
"What was this I heard about a free gorgeous redhead?" he inquires with faux innocence. "I think I ordered one of those, as well."
"Reckon that one's out of your budget, mate," Lily returns, though her fingers curl beneath his.
"I have incredibly high limits on my card," James says, but when she gives him a quelling look, he only lifts the hand that's not still—still—holding hers, and splays its fingers wide. "Five minutes," he requests, brown eyes pleading. "I need someone to explain what everything is. I'm hopeless. I'll just call every one a pudding and and never get the right one."
"You're not nearly as hopeless as that," Lily argues, but her protest sounds flimsily wain even to her own ears.
But, really, why shouldn't it? Of course she wants to cosy up with James at this table and watch as he samples all her delicious hard work, wants to see his eyes light up with each taste, wants to grin as he dives back in for second spoonfuls of his favourites, wants to listen to the cool, syrupy sound of his voice as he sorts through which treat he thinks his mum will fancy most.
She glances over her shoulder at Mary, who is presently ringing up one customer's purchase, with a second queuing patiently behind. There does seem to be a brief lull in the mad Valentine's rush. And those cupcakes were the last of Lily's afternoon baking shift. The display cases should remain decently stocked for at least another few hours. If a sudden onslaught of new customers arrives, she can always pop back over there.
She turns to James, who watches her with hopeful expectation. His face is still so close, she can nearly taste the little dimple. Could just lift up on her tiptoes, drop the smallest of kisses—
Christ, she's far gone for this one.
"Fine. Five minutes," she says, and feels the rush of heady affection as he grins widely, beaming at her. "But if it starts getting busy, I'll have to—"
"Hop to, absolutely." His fingers drop hers, but only so he can reach down and guide her from the back once more. He kicks out one of the chairs with his foot and calls, "Mary, Lily's taking her break!"
"Five minutes!" Lily corrects, and gives James a look as he seats her, then slides into the chair across. "Five minutes," she warns him again.
His only response is another grin.
Five minutes, she's said, but of course it's not five minutes. At five minutes, she's hardly gotten through naming even half of the desserts presented, gets caught up when James asks, "Where did you learn all this? You're a bloody marvel." And Lily explains about her grandmother, the one who had kept Lily in the kitchen at her knee for most of her childhood, and then the brief stint in culinary school after that, though when that same grandmother had passed and left Lily a healthy little inheritance, she and Mary had decided to take the plunge and open the shop.
So five minutes turns to ten, and ten to fifteen, and then time means something else because they're talking about James's mum and her laundry list of hilarious antics and the way James so clearly adores her straight down to his toes—adores his whole family, and the stories he has!—but then Lily has to pop over to help with a growing rush of customers and returns to the table to find that James has somehow recruited five adorable little girls and their jolly father chaperone into his scientific study, six new forks diving into numerous delicacies, and Lily is left preening as James announces that she is their creator and all six newcomers babble and bleat their lavish praise upon her. The little girls do not seem to notice or mind that the frosting on their heart-shaped cupcake is lopsided, and end up ordering half-dozen more before they depart the bakery with waves and frosting-coated smiles. Lily rings them up herself with her own giddy grin, and turns to find that Mary has foisted a rag and cleaner spray on James, who is diligently scrubbing little girl finger prints off the glass display case. Then they're back at the table, and how can they not start to discuss which Fyre Festival documentary is better? It's the only natural progression of the afternoon, and the perfect complement to casual fork dips into the red velvet cake. And the strawberry shortcake. And—
"A pudding!" James declares in delight.
"A pudding," Lily confirms, smiling fondly.
She's so very very fond of this man, and each five minutes by five minutes that passes does nothing to temper that. It's a mighty thing, this deepening crush of hers, and it's suddenly being augmented all the more by the growing suspicion that she's almost certain—really, nearly positively certain—that it's not an unrequited affection. She's considered it before, of course. All these weeks, all these mornings. But today...it's different. He doesn't say anything more flirty than usual, doesn't try anything cringeworthy like feeding her food off his fork or asking what desserts are best eaten directly from the skin. Lily has had a few of those sorts in her past, and James is neither. But he does lean into her across the table at every available opportunity. He does make nudging his fork against hers as they dig into a fruit tart seem like foreplay. He does…
He does fancy her.
It's....really, she's certain—
"All that talk about pudding, and you hardly even tasted it!" she cries now, because she can't bring herself to say, All this chemistry and flirting, and you've hardly even touched me!
James responds to neither spoken nor unspoken exclamation, instead scraping a spoon once again inside the effectively empty glass of caramel pretzel mousse, which has quickly surpassed all other desserts on the tray in his estimation.
"I want to be buried in this," he declares, lavishly closing his eyes as he licks the spoon for the last sparse remnants of mousse streaks. "Better yet, cremate me and mix me in with the batter. Please. It's the perfect way to go."
"That would most certainly affect the consistency," Lily mutters, but she's pleased—so very smug and proud and pleased—that he's so enamoured of something she's made. He's been rapturously complimentary about just about every dessert he's sampled, but he's clearly got a new favourite and it delights her.
"I want this for every meal," he says, and stares down at the mousse glass like he's strongly considering circling the rim with his finger so he can lick up whatever his spoon has failed to catch. "I want—"
"Another one?" Lily asks, laughing. "You're allowed to pick out one for yourself along with your mum's, you know. I'm sure there's plenty left—"
But as Lily swivels in her seat to view just how many caramel pretzel mousses are left for James to hoard all his own, it's to find a much emptier display case than when she'd last left it. In fact, the whole bakery is emptier. And it's darker. Much darker.
"Shit." She checks her watch—shit. "It's nearly closing. How did it get so late?"
"Hm?" James murmurs, but Lily rises to her feet, suddenly incredibly skittish.
She knew she'd wasted a bit of time this afternoon, tasting and laughing and chatting with James. She just hadn't realised how much time had gone.
She glances up to see that Mary is taking care of another customer at the till, and the one other woman they have running this shift is tidying in the kitchen. Neither seems bothered or overwhelmed by Lily's absence, but she still feels like a wretch. She makes it to the display case to find that a solid half of the stock has been thoroughly cleared out. There are no more crème brûlée biscuits. No more double chocolate mini cakes. No more—
No more caramel pretzel mousses.
"Shit," she says again, squinting in the glare of the display case's lights. She glances over her shoulder at James, who has risen to his feet too and is slowly following her towards the desserts. "We took too long. Look—half of the best stuff is already gone. You and the girls wanted to include the graham cracker shortcake. And there's only one of the praline pieces. And the mousse—"
"It is a shame, about the mousse," James says, and stops when he's standing next to her, gazing down at the empty tiers, as well. He pauses, and then there's the warm pressure of his fingers at her back again, soothingly stroking. "Don't worry about the rest."
She feels impossibly guilty. "What do you mean 'don't worry about the rest'? The whole plan—"
"There's been a change in the plans," James says, nodding firmly. "A big reveal, if you will."
"Big reveal? What does that—"
"I realised quite early on that it would require approximately six stone of desserts in order to have my poor mother forgetting about her lack of extended progeny for even the smallest productive period of time." He tips his chin at her in acknowledgment. "Even if they are the best desserts the world has ever seen."
She narrows her eyes, wondering where this is going now. "That's very flattering, but what then—"
"Euphemia Potter is a woman of action," James interrupts again, simply and crisply. "She likely could never be bribed with sweets or treats. Instead, I plan to earn back far greater favour by stopping round her house later, giving her a strong cuddle, and saying, 'Mother beloved, I am sorry I do not yet have a child for which you may dandle upon your knee, but I did just spend the entire afternoon finagling my way into a dessert-themed date with the woman I've fancied something fierce for the last two months—and I think it actually went really well—so I hope you'll take that as strides in the correct direction and strive to be content for now.'"
What had he just—
...finagling my way into a dessert-themed date...
...woman I've fancied something fierce…
...went really well…
Lily stares at him.
She stares at him, she blinks rapidly, feels her pulse racing...and then she tries not to smile.
Date.
Fancy.
Thank god.
"You sly little shit." She elbows him in the stomach, beginning to laugh as he laughs. "You tricked me."
"Only a smidge," he insists, and holds up his thumb and pointer finger, measuring out a minuscule centimeter. The other hand still drifts along her back. "And only because every time I come in, you seem so busy, so I chatted with Mary—"
"Mary was in on this?"
"—and I know Valentine's Day is the worst, but I wanted to see you, and I didn't know—that is, I wasn't sure if…" He trails off, wincing some, looking for the first time a bit bashful and apologetic for his elaborate machinations. Lily still can't believe she'd been so neatly shepherded into it like one of the blind herd. It's grating, being fooled this way. But also…
But also…
Woman I've fancied something fierce.
Lily turns toward him, stepping forward until the space is gone between them, until she can wrap her long arms around his middle and squeeze his torso in a tight, thrilling little hug...all while stomping very firmly on his left foot with hers.
"Next time, just ask, you prat," she grumbles, then snuggles her face against his chest.
She can feel his heart pounding against her ear. His body—so soft and warm—huddles around hers as both of James's arms wrap around her too. He squeezes her—strong, tight, delicious.
"There's a next time?" he asks hopefully.
Lily makes a vague little humming noise, burying her smile into his button-down.
There would be a next time. There would most certainly be a next time.
After all...someone still had to do something about those aubergines.

Fourteen
I don’t know why we thought it would be a good idea to go out for dinner on New Years’ eve. The entire restaurant was packed with families, and people were not subtle about the fact that they enjoyed staring at us. Although Evelyn had made the reservations under her name, we were now stuck inside as evidently, someone decided to call the press on behalf of the restaurant. Dulcie and Elva were oblivious to the fact that outside of those doors, there were at least ten burly men with massive cameras waiting to catch an exclusive of Jamie Dornan’s new family (that’s what they call us now).
Jamie and I were now standing at the entrance of the restaurant as the manager apologizes over and over again, saying that he should’ve done a better job in protecting our privacy and that he will find the staff member who decided to tell on us. Jamie reassures him that things like this happen. He walks back to me and the girls.
“Well, it’s either we walk out now or never leave the restaurant.”
“What about the car?”
“I called the driver a few minutes ago, he’s now waiting outside all we need to do is get in.”
I sigh, “We still have to buckle Elva into her car seat.”
“We can think about that later; all I want is to get you guys out of here.”
“But the car can’t drive off without Elva being in her seat-”
“Oh for God’s sakes, Dakota it’s new years’ eve! The cops are all gathered in times square right now and if you’re so worried then we’ll drive off into the alley or something then buckle her in.” he snaps.
I flinch at his words, “Okay, okay, I’m sorry.”
His gaze softens as he presses a kiss onto my forehead, “I’m sorry, I just, I don’t like this at all.”
“Let’s just go home.” I say to him as he nods.
He picks Dulcie up in his arms as I tighten my grip around Elva, letting her know to put her arms around my neck. Jamie tells me to come closer so that both girls could hear him.
“Don’t let go of us, okay? Don’t look around at the camera flashes and just stick to us, understood?”
They nodded and buried each of their heads in our respective chests as Jamie takes a deep breath. He then gestures for me to go first, finally picking up the courage to open the door after ten seconds.
I was immediately greeted by the cold winter air along with blinding lights as the sounds of cameras clicking filled my ears. I walked as fast as I could with Elva in my arms, also attempting to cover her ears from the shouting.
“Dakota, how does it feel to be a mom now?”
“So how long have you two really been together?”
“What a beautiful family!”
“Jamie, what does your wife have to say about this?”
“How are you two spending tonight?”
“Your daughters are gorgeous, Jamie!”
The driver got out as he opened the back door for me. I slid into the middle seat and immediately started working on buckling Elva in as Jamie placed Dulcie next to me and slammed the door shut. After a few moments, he makes his way around the car and jumps into the front seat.
“Go.” He tells the driver immediately.
I took a look at Dulcie, making sure that her seatbelt was on before taking care of myself. I let out a breath of relief as we finally drive away. Jamie turns around to look at me.
“I’m sorry for that.”
I frowned, “We both knew there was a huge chance that would happen.”
Dulcie raises her hand, “I have a question.”
“What is it, baby?” I ask.
“Why have we been chased around by men with cameras for the past week?”
Jamie closes his eyes, attempting to calm himself before replying, “Well, those people are just very interested in people who have jobs like us.”
A look of confusion fills her face, “That’s weird.”
“I agree.” I smile as she leans on me.
The rest of the drive back home was pretty cheerful. As usual, we let the girls pick the music, which, although he would never admit, Jamie definitely enjoyed. The girls were particularly excited about staying up until midnight today; we were going to watch the ball drop together. After arriving at my place, Jamie gave the driver an obscenely large tip, thanking him for his services today as we got off and made our way up.
“Do you guys know what you should do on new years?” I ask them.
They both shook their heads as I let out a smile, “Why don’t you tell them, Jamie?”
“Well,” he presses the button on the elevator as we ride up, “you’re supposed to give the people you love a kiss.”
Elva smiles, “Dakota, let me give you a kiss!”
I leaned down and let her kiss me as I smile, “You’re supposed to give me one later when we do the countdown.”
“Hey,” Jamie glared, “don’t I get one?”
Dulcie let out a small giggle, “Elva likes Dakota more, daddy.”
He pouts sadly as we step out of the elevator, “I’m sad.”
“I love you too daddy, but I think I’ll save your kiss for later.” Elva sticks her tongue out at him, immediately running inside the apartment as the door opened.
Jamie scoffs in disbelief and takes his coat off, “My kids are learning too much from you.”
I throw my arms around him and shrug, “Quality education is expensive nowadays, it’s rare that they get to learn from the best.”
He chuckles and places his lips on mine, “I love you.”
“Ditto.” I grin and pull away, feeling his pocket vibrating.
He pulls out his phone and takes a look at the caller. Amelia. He nods his head towards the kids and gives me an apologetic smile, “I promised the kids they’d get to talk to their mom tonight.”
I nod in agreement, “No, that’s great! I’ll go make some popcorn.” I say as I head off to the kitchen and he presses answer.
I hear the girls greet their mother happily as I tossed the bag of popcorn into the microwave. Rummaging inside the fridge, I pull out some strawberries and the chocolate dip I had bought a few days before, placing them all on the kitchen counter. I cracked open a bottle of wine for Jamie and I and grabbed a few juice packs for the girls. I hear light footsteps approaching me.
“Yeah, mommy hold on she’s right here.”
I turn around to see Dulcie standing in the doorway, Hi there, what’s up?”
“Mommy wants to say hi to you.” She smiles and thrusts the phone to me.
I blinked a couple of times, before laughing awkwardly and taking the phone from her. Alright then.
I turned the phone so that she could see my face as I waved, “Hi Millie.”
“Dakota!” Her cheerful voice surprised me, “How are you?”
“I’m good, oh happy new year to you!”
She grins, “Happy new year! You guys look like you’re having fun?”
“It’s been awesome so far,” I replied as I grabbed the popcorn from the beeping microwave, “I hope you went out to a party or something.”
She winks at me, “Oh I definitely did. It’s two in the morning here and I just got home from drinks at my friend’s place.”
“Sounds amazing!”
“It was!” she laughs.
Dulcie points at the bowl of strawberries, “Can I bring this?”
I nod at her, “Be careful!”
She grabs both the strawberries and chocolate dip and walks back in the direction of the living room. I grab the popcorn and follow her.
“I just wanted to say hi to you,” Millie says as she places her phone on what I presume is her vanity table and starts wiping her make-up off, “it’s been a while since we’ve talked.”
“Yeah, oh God I think it’s been nearly two years.”
“Crazy isn’t it how time flies?”
“Totally!” I agreed with her as Jamie grabs the bowl of popcorn from my arms, “There are drinks in the kitchen if you can just grab them.”
His eyes widened in surprise looking back and forth between his phone and me, “Okay.”
I sat down on the couch as Elva climbs up next to me, “Mommy, Dakota gave me Pua this year!”
“That’s wonderful!” Millie gives her a thumbs up, “Be careful not to lose it, okay?”
“I won’t! Pua is in my room right now, sleeping.”
“Is she now?”
“Yeah, she says she’s tired.”
Millie and I both laugh as I reply, “Well Pua is still very little so she needs her rest.”
“Mommy, can’t you come here and join us?” Dulcie says as she takes a bite out of the strawberry she was holding and sits on my other side.
“I wish I could, darling.” She pouts, “But I’ll see you soon, and hopefully Dakota will come visit us in London?”
Jamie, who was walking back from the kitchen gave me a curious look, clearly awaiting my answer as he placed the drinks on the coffee table.
“I’d love that.” I reply.
Millie taps the screen of her phone and yawns, “Well girls, mommy has to go to bed, it’s way too late for me. Promise me you’ll both stay out of trouble, don’t give Dakota and your daddy a hard time, okay?”
“Yes, mommy.” They both replied and waved at the screen.
“I love you.”
“We love you too, mommy!”
I smiled and waved, “It was nice talking to you Millie, do you want to speak to Jamie?”
“Yeah, that’ll be great.” She waves back, “Happy new year, girls!”
The girls blow a kiss at the camera and I wish her a happy new year as well before handing the phone back to Jamie. He discreetly makes his way to my bedroom as the girls and I start discussing the festivities displayed on the television. I was telling Elva to stop feeding Zep his treats when Jamie walks back in and sits himself down on the couch with us.
“So,” he starts, “you want to come to London with us.”
“I wouldn’t mind, you know, visiting.”
A smile decorated his face, “I’m glad to know that.”
I roll my eyes at him and snort, “Yeah, yeah.”
We resumed the rest of the night happily as the new year got closer. Before we knew it, it was almost time for the countdown to start. Jamie had dimmed the lights earlier and lit the room up with candles so that we could all feel it more. The countdown clock on the television alerted us that we had one minute left in this year.
“Girls come on, make a wish for the new year.” Jamie urges them.
“I’ll go first!” Dulcie stands up and clasps her hands together in a prayer-like position, “I wish that you, mommy, Dakota and Elva will be happy next year.”
“Dulcie,” I coo, “That’s a really nice wish.”
Elva mimics her sister’s position as she stands up next to her, “I wish that we can see daddy and Dakota more often next year.”
Jamie moves forward and plants kisses on both their heads, “I wish that the two of you become even more amazing than you already are this year.”
I was definitely getting emotional now as I feel the tears build up. The three of them looked at me. I placed a hand over my heart before making my wish.
“I wish,” I paused for dramatic effect, “that the three of you will realize just how much you guys make me happy.”
The anchor on the television yelled out that the thirty-second countdown has begun. Both girls jumped up and down excitedly as they held each other’s hands and started counting down with him. Jamie, on the other hand, slid an arm around me, encouraging me to come closer. I did so and smiled up at him.
“I can’t believe this.”
“What?”
He caresses my face, “That I have everything I have ever wanted, right here, right now.”
I don’t look away from his face as the girls counted down.
“Five, four, three, two, one!” They both shouted and the sound of fireworks filled the apartment.
Dulcie and Elva scream excitedly as they run to my balcony, Zeppelin following after them. Jamie beamed at me as he joins our lips in a deep, passionate kiss. It was the type of kiss you could only dream of, one that made you actually feel like crying because you were so, so happy. I let his tongue explore my mouth for a while before finally pulling away.
“Happy new year.” I tell him.
He kisses my forehead once more, “Happy new year, Dakota.”
“Daddy, Dakota, come see the fireworks!” Dulcie calls out from the balcony.
We join them hand-in-hand, each of us taking turns giving them kisses before we look up at the colours painting the sky. I feel Jamie squeeze my hand in his as I lay my head on his shoulder. I close my eyes for a second, muttering a short prayer to all the Gods saying how thankful I was. You’d think that throughout my almost-thirty years of life that I’d often feel happiness. That was true, but this was so much better than any of those times.
This time, I actually feel complete.

Lucas Friar moved back to Texas at 17, now he’s running for Mayor of Rosewood Springs so best friend Zay and little sister Gigi decide he needs a little help from a political consultant.
Riley Matthews found her calling, she found a fiancé, but she never expected to find herself here, of all places.
Cross-posted to FF.net | Soundtrack | Past Chapters
Author Note: If only Lucas had read that note at the end of the last chapter, am I right? So close, but oh so far.
-I wish you had sunglasses on-
Riley was up early, she had Lucas’ paperwork all put together so he could officially register, she had the designs for his flyers, banners, signs, pins, all ready to go. She sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, hoping it would keep her going for at least most of the day.
She hadn’t slept at all.
Every single time she’d gotten close Lucas filled her thoughts. She was starting to get lost in fantasies of him kissing her neck, undressing her. After she took a shower that didn’t help clear her mind, if anything it led to even steamier thoughts of him she decided to put her energy into working on the campaign.
“Morning” Lucas came in, freshly showered, dressed in jeans, a t-shirt, and a plaid shirt thrown over but unbuttoned. “How’d you sleep last night?” He’d seen her light still on when he left for the emergency house call.
“I didn’t” she confessed before she could stop herself, “But um, I was working on all of this. Your paperwork is filled out, these are the designs for the flyers and such. Where did you go to so late, or was it early?”
“House call, Camilla’s dog was sick, she should be fine, but better to be cautious then careless.” He watched her, wondering if she’d had trouble sleeping for the same reason he had before he looked over the designs, “These look great, thank you Riley.”
“Just doing my job.” She took a long sip of coffee, why did he smell so good, so delicious, why was he so close to her right now that she could feel his body heat, his body vibrations.
“So, what do we do now?”
Riley could think of a million things they could do right now, but she snapped out of that daze just before answering, “Um, I need to find a print shop that can get all of this stuff printed up. You need to files these today, meet me at city hall at eleven.”
“Yeah, okay, I should be back from house calls by then.” He watched as she started to gather her things, “Are you okay?”
“Just ready to get to work making you the next mayor of this town.”
“Okay, I’ll see you at eleven then.” He went to pour himself a cup of coffee.
“Yes, you will.” She went out the backdoor, hugging her laptop to her body as she went to her car. She sat behind the wheel for a moment, her hands shaking, wondering how she was going to get through another day around him, let alone make it all the way until November.
Lucas watched her drive away, he’d found a way for her to stay, hell she’d given it to him. She couldn’t be oblivious to how easily they connected, how if they let themselves a fire would ignite between them that couldn’t be put out.
Or was that exactly what she was afraid of?
Why had she been outside his room the other night?
He had to get answers to his questions.
As he took a sip of his coffee, feeling it warm his tired body it hit him. After he filed the paperwork, he would take her to lunch. Sure, the only real option was Casey’s Diner, but he just had to do what he could to remove every brick one by one of the wall between them. He had to find out why that wall existed as high as it was.
Riley had a productive morning, she got an order set to print all the materials for the campaign. She had the press release set to send out as soon as Lucas turned in his paperwork, and she had the new social media accounts ready to go.
She was sitting outside city hall, reading her messages from Dave. They were all about the surprise he had for her when she got back to New York, she could feel the guilt knotting in her stomach, mixing with the batch of dread-filled butterflies swarming around as well.
“Hey, you ready to make this official?” Lucas had sat beside her, his arm around her while she’d been lost in her thoughts.
She blinked, “What?” her heart racing.
“The running for mayor thing.” He smiled before planting a quick kiss on her forehead, ‘What else would I be talking about?”
“Sorry” She waved her hand like it wasn’t a big deal, “I was spacing out, reading messages from Dave.”
Lucas felt his entire body stiffen, his jaw tight, “Oh, well let’s get this going.” He could feel his jealousy simmering through his body. He needed to find a way to keep it in check.
“Yeah let’s.” Riley rose from the bench, digging in her bag for his paperwork, “Here you go.”
Lucas took the file as they went up the steps, he took a moment and found the clerk’s office. “Hi Mrs. Miller, how are you today?”
Riley took a quick picture on her phone of him, casual still, but it was perfect for the social media accounts.
“Why Dr. Friar” The older woman smiled when she saw him, and then even brighter when she saw Riley with him, “What can I do for you?”
Lucas looked down at the file, “I would like to file these.”
Mrs. Miller took the paperwork, “Marriage License?”
“No” Lucas looked to Riley, “Not yet, actually I’m going to run for mayor.”
“Oh well let me get this all approved for you.” Mrs. Miller quickly went over the paperwork, “Looks to be in order.”
“Wonderful” Lucas kept his eyes on Riley who was looking down at her phone.
Mrs. Miller couldn’t help but notice the way Lucas was looking at Riley, “Only $81, just a three day wait to get married.”
“Now Mrs. Miller, Riley and I just got back together. I think we should wait a little while before I pop the question, don’t you?” He’d leaned forward so Riley couldn’t hear.
Mrs. Miller noticed the way Riley would glance at him, “Fine, but you’re just putting off the inevitable, I’ll see you here in what September, October, to get one.”
“I sure hope so.” Lucas signed the document Mrs. Miller passed to him.
“Well it’s official Lucas, you’re running for mayor, good luck with everything.”
“Thanks Mrs. Miller, I’ll see you Friday right, Fluffernutter is scheduled for his shots.”
“Yeah, I’ll see you then Doc.”
Riley smiled as she watched the exchange before he came over to her, “All set?”
“Yeah, unless you want to get a marriage license for us. That’s what Mrs. Miller thought we were here for.”
Riley blushed, “Yes well I don’t plan on wasting money on another one of those.” She’d realized what she said, but knew he didn’t seem to know.
Lucas studied her, “You and Dave already got one?”
“No, not yet, we haven’t even set a date.” She reminded him as she adjusted her bag on her shoulder.
“Good” Lucas put his hand on the small of her back, “Let’s get lunch.”
Riley tried to ignore the flood of warmth, of energy she felt from his touch, “I was just going to go back to the house.”
“I’m taking you out, come on.” Lucas guided her out of the building, “Come on, trust me.”
Riley sighed, “Fine.”
Lucas took her hand, feeling the warmth spread through his body, “I mean we’ve got limited options, but quality over quantity am I right?”
“Right” Riley followed him into the diner which was starting to get busy as he led her to a booth towards the back, “Okay Friar, what are you up to?”
“Taking my favorite girl out for lunch.” He told her honestly.
“Shouldn’t that be Gigi then?” She looked over the menu.
“She’s my sister but you’re my favorite.” He was trying to tell her, was she really going to wear him down to having to say the words.
Before Riley could reply a waitress came to take their order.
“So,” Lucas looked out the window to the street, “Um, what is your schedule going to be like now that this whole thing is official.”
“Well it depends on what events you’ll have to go to, which really the more you’re out there the better.”
“As long as I don’t let the care of my patients suffer.” He reminded her.
“I will do my best to make sure that your patients still come first.” She looked at her phone, “Oh yay, Maya really did send that package express.”
“Oh, did your clothes arrive already?”
“Yeah, if my alert is correct it’s waiting on your porch right now.”
“Great, we gotta get you a little more country and less city.” Lucas smirked, though he had a feeling whatever Maya sent wasn’t what Riley had intended for her to.
Riley leaned on the table top towards him, “Are you going to try and make me an honest country woman?”
“If you let me.” He meant that in every way possible.
Their food arrived and Riley looked up to Lucas, “You know, there is something I’ve always wondered.”
“Oh yeah, what’s that?”
“How come you never moved back to New York.”
His mouth formed the shape of an O as he sat back, “I just um, wasn’t sure there was anything for me in New York.”
“Something about the way he looked at her in this moment sent a chill through Riley, “Your friends are there, I know Farkle still visits you. And I was there.”
Lucas took a bite of his burger to avoid responding, trying to find the words that he could, “Why didn’t you come surprise me for my eighteenth birthday?” it flew out before he could catch himself.
Riley was stunned, “What?”
“Zay had told me you were going to come down, and then, you didn’t. Was he wrong, or did someone or something stop you from coming?” It was out now, he might as well find out.
“I was planning to come down, to surprise you, um, I worked every shift I could at the bakery to save money to buy the tickets, but um” she looked around wishing she could escape this conversation, “One night, I was going through Instagram and um, I got the impression you didn’t need a visit from me, you didn’t need to remember your life in New York.”
“So, you decided not to come?”
“Yeah” She looked away so he wouldn’t see the tears in her eye, damn she wished she hadn’t left her sunglasses in her purse, but it would be obvious if she pulled them out now. “Your um Instagram feed was full of pictures of you with different girls, all of them all over you.”
Lucas felt sick as he looked away, that was why she didn’t come, because she thought he moved on? “I didn’t personally post those, and the girls kind of mob me. It was odd, flattering at first, but none of them were you. None of them could ever be you. I deleted them as soon as I found them on my feed.”
“I figured, I went to delete them the other day.” She confessed.
“That’s why you thought my social media needed to be scrubbed clean?” He was filling some blanks now, it was making sense. He couldn’t be mad at her anymore, not now that he knew why she didn’t come to visit. He couldn’t blame her for what she thought, and he wasn’t supposed to know anyways.
She ran her hand through her hair as she tried to look away so he couldn’t see her crying. Trying to use it as an excuse to dry her eyes. “I mean I unfollowed you after that, I was hurt, and I couldn’t even fathom coming to see you, I couldn’t be rejected by you then.”
He reached across the table for her left hand, taking it in his letting his thumb rub over her ring finger, “I wouldn’t have rejected you. I would never reject you.”
She pulled her hand away, “That’s sweet of you to say.”
He knew she was avoiding looking at him, and he was close to telling her. “I’m not just saying it.”
“The past is the past Lucas, we can’t change it.” She moved her fork around her plate, “I didn’t come to Texas, and you made decisions not to go other places. It is what it is, and it led us to the here and now.”
He knew she wasn’t going to talk about it more than she already was, he knew that something else was bothering her. The way she spoke made him think that, but he couldn’t put it together, what did he still not know?
They sat in silence for a while before Riley looked up, “Are Gigi and Zay working tonight or will they be joining us for dinner?”
“Working, busy week with the Fourth of July a few days away, the bachelor auction tomorrow night.” Lucas looked to her, “We don’t have to have dinner together if you don’t want to.”
“No that’s not it” She tried to smile, “I just wanted to know how many I was cooking for tonight. Don’t want to make too much or too little of something.”
“What else do you have to do in town? I only have a few patients this afternoon, then I’m going to bring some paperwork home.”
“Actually, I think I’m done in town for the day at least.” Riley shifted nervously in her seat, “I’ll just go back to the ranch, unpack the stuff Maya sent, um do some work.”
“You should explore downtown a little bit, get to know it.” Lucas suggested, “Maybe check out the bookstore.”
“You want me to hang around town, I don’t need a ride, I have a car.” She reminded him.
He leaned closer to her across the table giving her a quick kiss on the lips, “I want you to see this town, see it’s heart, see its soul, I want you to see Rosewood Springs and what makes it so special.”
“If you, um, if I uh, didn’t know better than I would think you were trying to give me a reason to stay in town, you know, after.”
Lucas got up from his seat, picking up the check, “Maybe, or maybe I think you need to know Rosewood Springs if you’re going to help me win.”
Lucas was sitting on the steps when Riley pulled up, “So enjoy exploring?”
Riley got out of the car, carrying a bag from the bookstore, “Maybe,” she then grabbed a bag from the grocery store, “I’m surprised you got here before me.”
“Don’t worry I didn’t open your box of clothes that Maya sent.” He picked the box up.
“Thank goodness for small favors.” She started up the stairs, “Thanks for grabbing that.”
“Of course,” He opened the door as he balanced the box on his hip, “You sure Maya just sent you clothes?”
“Yeah, what else is she going to send me?” Riley shook her head as she put her bags down at the kitchen table before putting things away. “So, good afternoon at the office?”
“Yeah, it was good.” Lucas went to the fridge and took out a soda, “I’m sorry, but I’m dying to know what Maya sent you. I know Gigi would love to go shopping with you if you find you need some stuff.”
Riley rolled her eyes, “Okay, go ahead, open the box.”
“Okay then” Lucas took out his pocket knife and set his soda on the table. After cutting through the tape, he pulled back the flaps. He stared at the contents. He wasn’t sure if he should laugh or not, “Um Ri, what did you ask Maya to send you?”
“Tank tops, t-shirts, jeans, why she didn’t send more suits did she?” Riley had taken a few things out of the fridge and was preparing to start making dinner.
Lucas smirked, “You know Ri, I’m just glad to see you went with the waterproof rabbit.” He held the box up as he turned to look at her.
Riley stopped what she was doing, “What the hell?”
He put the box down on the counter where she was, “Are you finding that you’ve got pent up needs here in Texas?”
“No” Riley lied as she took the box, “Maya is being funny, I didn’t ask her to send this.”
“You shouldn’t need that anyways.” Lucas could hear the change in his voice, “Every want, every need, you have, every desire of yours should be fulfilled.”
Riley knew if she looked at him, within five minutes they would be naked in one of their beds, giving in to whatever this was, “That’s kind of you.”
Lucas watched as she grabbed the vibrator box and went over to the package, “What else did Maya send?”
Riley was putting it back when she stopped, “What the fuck Maya?”
“What did she send?” He was curious, beyond curious about what Maya was up to.
Riley pulled out the short purple nightie, “What does she think I’m doing down here?”
She thinks you’re doing me, or should be. Lucas studied the silk item that hung on Riley’s finger, already picturing her in it, while also growing hot with jealousy at the thought that Dave had seen her in it, he’d pushed the straps off her shoulders, kissed his way down her body. “You’ll have to ask Maya.”
Riley shook her head as she looked at the rest of the items, “The rest is what I asked for.” She was embarrassed, what if Lucas thought she needed the vibrator because all she could think about was him taking her, or that the she asked for the nightie in a bid to seduce him.
“You okay Ri?”
“Yeah, I’m just going to take this upstairs before I come back to make dinner.”
“After you yell at Maya, right?”
“No, that would give her satisfaction.” Riley closed the box, “No, make her wonder if her little ploy worked.”
“And what was her ploy exactly?” He stepped towards her.
Riley tried to stand up straight and tall, “What do you think it was, because that’s probably exactly what it is.”
Lucas waited a moment as Riley left the kitchen, “So Maya wants you to seduce me?” he called out.
“No,” Riley paused on the stairs, “She wants me to remember that I’m missing my fiancé.” She knew it was wrong, but she couldn’t let him know he was right.
Lucas shook his head, yeah, he wasn’t buying that. “Whatever you say Princess!”
Riley went to her room, putting the box down on the bed. Lucas was right, Maya wanted her to seduce him. Hell, part of Riley wanted to seduce him, part of her was thinking about putting that nightie on right now, going back to the kitchen, and letting Lucas have her for dinner.
Charlie was waiting at the bar, slowly drinking his beer knowing that as soon as he was done with the drink he would have to go home to his wife and the kids. But he had to talk to Dave first, find out what he was going to do about the picture that Lucas had posted on Instagram.
He looked up seeing Dave come in just as the waitress put the chips and salsa down in front of him that he’d ordered. Hey might as well have his best friend’s favorite food ready as he complains about that bastard Lucas.
Dave moved though the crowded bar to find Charlie, “Okay, what is so important I had to come down here right after work? I have to go plan things for when Riley gets back in a few days.”
Charlie signaled for the waitress who came and took Dave’s drink order before he started, “You haven’t talked to Riley for a few days have you.”
Dave thought for a moment, “Saturday after I was on the boat with Avery for the day.”
Charlie nodded as he took a corn chip and dipped it in the Salsa. “So where did she say she was.”
“Texas, and that she didn’t think she’d be there long, why?” Dave grabbed a corn chip just as the waitress brought over his microbrew.
“She asked Maya to send her some clothes cause she’s going to be there for a while and she needs to blend in better.” Charlie sat back, “Did she mention who she’s with in Texas?”
“No, but she doesn’t talk about her clients with me.”
Charlie hated this, “I um shared this with you on Instagram, but I’m guessing you haven’t checked that for a while.” He pulled the picture up, “Maya liked this last night.”
Dave rolled his eyes, “You check what Maya likes on Instagram, don’t you trust her?”
“Oh, I do, I also know when she’s up to something.” Charlie leaned forward on his arms, “She’s been talking to Farkle a lot, and Zay.”
Dave picked up the phone, “This has to be an old picture.”
“Read the caption Dave.” Charlie really hoped that his friend was in denial, but that picture was clear as day.
“Seeing the new Chris Evans film with my beautiful girlfriend.” Dave finally allowed himself to scroll down, “You and Riley look so happy says a GigiDarcy, and then, You and Riley looking in each other’s stupid, stupid eyes brings back memories replies BarGuyZay.”
Charlie watched as Dave put the phone down, before taking a long sip of his drink.
“She wasn’t wearing her ring.” Dave finally spoke, “She’s with Lucas Friar, her first love and she took off the ring I gave her.”
“That’s what it looks like.” Charlie suddenly worried he’d done the wrong thing. Maybe he shouldn’t have told Dave.
Dave picked up Charlie’s phone again, pulling up Lucas’ profile, “Rosewood Springs, well I gotta get down there and find out what’s going on.”
“Maybe just call her.” Charlie suggested, yeah Maya was going to kill him for getting involved in this.
Dave ran his hand over his hair, “No, I have to find out face to face. If Riley is cheating on me with Lucas of all people, you remember what he was like back in school.”
“I mean yeah” Charlie sighed, “I mean he and Riley had something back then that was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before or since, but that was kid stuff. She said yes to you Dave, I mean unless you’ve given her a reason for her to stray, what are you really worried about?”
“If this was Maya and say Josh Matthews would you not be worried?” Dave shoved the phone at Charlie.
He looked down at the picture on his screen, “Okay, I would be nervous at least about what could be going on.”
“I gotta get a flight to Texas, do I fly into Dallas or Austin?”
Hey and Zay would say they were from Austin, so there?” Charlie really had a bad feeling about what was happening, and he was sure he was going to be sleeping in Dave’s apartment or boat once Maya found out.
“Good idea, I gotta go pack, and get a flight, and find out what the hell is going on.”
“Dave” Charlie called out, “Don’t do something stupid, don’t do anything that is going to drive her into Friar’s arms. Because I’m sure he’s waiting for her with them wide open.”
Shit. Charlie sighed, he probably just made everything worse.

In Indore's COVID-19 hospital, patients help lighten the mood, motivate health workers to keep up fight against coronavirus
Editor's note: This series will focus on the difficulties faced by the medical fraternity at COVID-19 hospitals, their duty hours, access to protective gear, facilities they get during quarantine, how are their families coping with this new reality across different states in the country. This is the third part of the series.
Amid the sombre mood in the quarantine hospital in Indore, a seven-year-old patient, who the doctors won’t name, brings moments of relief and lightness. The coronavirus-positive boy insisted that he be allowed to carry his cricket bat and ball before being shifted. Now, he challenges doctors and nurses to cricket matches every now and then. A bundle of energy, the child is a favourite among the medical staff.
***
In a sort of role reversal, whenever the medical staff of the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS), one of the designated COVID-19 hospitals in Indore, are in low spirits, the patients seek to lift their mood through conversation. They share laughs and jokes with the former. “Doctor sahab, what’s wrong? You look grumpy this morning. Listen to this joke...” Whether it's a simple query or a joke, patients play the part in making the heavy atmosphere less unbearable.
***
In the COVID-19 facilities at Indore in Madhya Pradesh, the healthcare staff and patients have built a unique bond. They have been staying at the same place, sharing the same food and living the same fears and hopes ever since they have arrived there. It’s like a family. There are minor incidents, but there’s also a strong sense of mutual responsibility.
Away from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi, which have seen the highest number of cases as well as casualties, Indore in central India is fighting hard to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus that came relatively late to the city but has since then spread through its neighbourhoods with greater ferocity.

By 21 April, Indore, the commercial hub of Madhya Pradesh, had seen the deaths of 52 of its residents due to COVID-19, forming the bulk of the 80 deaths in the state, bringing Madhya Pradesh next only to Maharashtra with 251 deaths, in the national table.
It's been nearly three months since the first positive COVID-19 case was reported in India — on 30 January in Kerala. The virus subsequently started appearing in other parts of India but Madhya Pradesh was a late entrant to join the list of affected states. The first COVID-19 death in Madhya Pradesh occurred in Ujjain on 25 March, the day the lockdown began in the country.

However, in the weeks since then, the state and its two most prominent cities — Indore and Bhopal — quickly climbed the charts, accounting for 52 and seven deaths, respectively, as on 21 April.
Death looms large at Indore
However, fear is writ large on the masked faces of Indore’s coronavirus warriors who are at the frontline of COVID-19 duty as the city, along with Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal, is one of the 20 high burden districts in the country affected by the pandemic.
Indore alone accounts for 915 of the 1,552 cases across the state. What scares those on coronavirus duty more is the fact that two city doctors and a police officer have succumbed to COVID-19.
Daily deaths of patients have created a kind of fear psychosis in hospitals not only among people who’ve been tested positive but also among the medical staff.
“The death of two doctors in Indore had put the entire medical fraternity in shock, panic and fear. But we ensured to be doubly guarded and extra alert because we can’t work from home as in many other professions. We’ve to be at the forefront,” said Salil Bhargava, professor and head (respiratory medicine) at the government’s Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Manorama Raje TB (MRTB) Hospital, which is one of the COVID hospitals in Indore.
Despite taking adequate precautions, the fear of getting infected is still there whether at the OPD or inside the COVID-19 ward.
“Nothing can be predicted. There is no guarantee that doctors, nurses or sanitation workers won’t get infected. So, the fear is there, whether it’s among health workers or the police – whosoever is at the forefront,” said Ravi Dosi, head (pulmonary medicine) at SAIMS.
The chances of getting infected are high in cases when a large number of patients from a hotspot arrive in a hospital's OPD or due to accidental coughing by a patient during the process of incubation or ventilation.
Sharing his experience, Bhargava said, “It’s a very tough time for doctors and health workers, and their families. Every day, I receive six to seven calls from relatives and friends as they are worried about me. The situation is the same with other doctors as well, who are in this fight against the novel coronavirus. But I’m more concerned about those health workers who’re working in smaller places and tehsils because they need to have good quality protective gear and precautionary measures. We’re much better in Indore, Bhopal and bigger cities.”
Doctors respond to call of duty
The frontline warriors in Indore’s COVID-19 hospitals have overcome their fears and engaged themselves in treating patients.
“Initially, I too was scared but I was reminded of Hippocratic Oath, and then there was no looking back. Same is with my other colleagues as we joined this profession with the basic objective to save people. This thought gives us the strength to counter and conquer fear. None of us has ever seen anything closer to this pandemic,” Dosi said.
It’s not just about doctors; the nursing and sanitation staff too have jumped into this battle with full force, without caring about their individual problems and pains.
A resident of Akola in Maharashtra, 48-year old Kalpana Pillai or Kalpana Didi, as she is fondly called, is the nursing in-charge at SAIMS and one of the most loved ones among the staff and patients.
During this lockdown period, Pillai broke her ankle but continued to serve patients, without taking any leave. She didn’t mention her injury during her telephonic conversation with Firstpost. With a limp in her walk, Pillai crisscrosses the COVID-19 block of SAIMS throughout her duty hours to reach out to patients.
“We forget our personal problems and pains while attending patients comprising one-and-half-year-old baby to a septuagenarian," she said.
"These patients usually come all alone to the hospital, with no one from home by their side and they look up to us as ‘God’ to save their lives. When I see them, I think that I could have been on that bed as a patient, but by the grace of Lord Christ, I’m not. So, it’s my duty to help them to get well so that they can go back home safe and join their families,” she said.
Pillai has been living in Indore for the last 30 years.
As Indore saw a rise in COVID-19 patients, the founder chairman of SAIMS, Vinod Bhandari promptly converted a newly constructed block of the medical research university-cum-hospital into a COVID-19 hospital with 500 beds and a 66-bed ICU on 15 March to manage the crisis.

Today, SAIMS has the highest number of COVID-19 patients in the country – nearly 450 are admitted and a team of 276 doctors and 300 nurses, headed by 39-year old Dosi attends to them.
“We’ve developed a new virology laboratory for testing. In between, I’ve experienced so much from this pandemic that I can publish nearly 100 papers for research in future,” said Bhandari.
Desperate times need desperate measures
These frontline warriors feel that it’s a long battle against coronavirus and won’t end soon, so the workforce needs to be protected.
“Our only goal is to save coronavirus positive patients. The need of the hour is to keep doctors and paramedical staff healthy and alive because this battle against COVID-19 is not only big but long,” said Bhargava.
To overcome their fear, a few doctors and health workers had to even seek psychiatric help in Indore.
“In some cases, psychiatric help was sought for a few doctors who were attending to COVID-19 patients. We can’t dismiss the fear within the medical staff, as this the first time ever that they have faced a pandemic of this proportion. After all, they are at the forefront of the battle,” Bhandari said.
The spread of the deadly virus, erratic work hours and lockdown have compelled most of the medical staff in COVID-19 hospitals to isolate themselves either within their campuses or in their hotel rooms. They don’t want their families to get infected. And as a result, they haven’t met their families in nearly a month. Back home, they too have small children, old parents or someone sick, but they have no choice.
“The hospital is our second home. Sometimes we do feel that had someone taken the responsibility for our domestic issues, it would have been a relief for us. But frankly speaking, our parents and family members provide us with mental support by telling us not to worry and focus on saving lives. That’s our inspiration, or else we would’ve crumbled,” said Dosi.
The hospital's attempt to create an alternate family – for the doctors as well as the patients – has also helped in allaying fear that hangs uneasily all around.
An important element of this alternate family is the common SAIMS kitchen, which serves food to both the patients as well as the medical staff.
Bhandari’s 81-year old mother Usha Bhandari, a retired teacher, has been instrumental in developing a strong bonding within the hospital. She regularly coordinates with the kitchen staff about daily meals in the hospital.
“As she is unable to visit the hospital at present, she coordinates from home with our health workers and kitchen staff every day. She keeps track of every requirement and people approach her even for small things, as they treat her as a mother figure,” said Bhandari.
Video calls and WhatsApp chats, etc., have also helped the health workers remain in touch with their families.
“Nowadays, children at home love to interact with their parents more on video calls than face-to-face. So, we don’t miss much by staying away from home for such a long period. Moreover, photos are being shared daily about what’s happening at home,” Dosi laughed.
Motivation is the key
Motivation has been a key element that has kept both doctors and patients strong during this crisis.

Citing the example of Mother Teresa, Dosi said, “Her determination, faith and selfless service to mankind for decades, won her Nobel Prize and she’s a perfect example for us on how we should deal with this crisis and look at our patients. This motivates us.”
“Moral support, empathy and mutual trust are important in motivating patients. I try to enhance their will power by motivating them. This helps them to overcome the fear of death and in the recovery process,” said Pillai.
A member of an extended Muslim family, all of whom have been quarantined at SAIMS after the death of one of their relatives due to COVID-19, told Firstpost, “Though I’ve been tested negative, I’m here for my safety. The love, care and compassion of the entire medical staff in this hospital, have made us realise that we’re a part of a big joint family and not away from home.”
Appreciation from patients has also proven helpful in fighting this battle.
“One of our coronavirus patients – an Indian origin banker living in France – told me while leaving the hospital that the care with a personal touch he got in our small government hospital at Indore was unthinkable in a European country right now. It’s overwhelming,” Bhargava shared.
Both Bhandari and Bhargava also thanked the government and local administration for their support in the form of funds, logistics, medicines, security, etc.
“Despite being in a government hospital, there’s no dearth of funds. The government has opened its coffer and in a single day, we get approvals and funds are sanctioned. And, that’s why we’re in a position to provide good treatment to patients,” Bhargava said.
“The real reward for us is to see these acutely serious patients gradually recovering and walking out of the hospitals,” he said.

WHY MERIDA?
The Landscape:
Mérida lies about 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico on the Yucatán, and about 100 miles from numerous Mayan ruins. Cenotes, primal sink holes that act as oases in the sweltering jungle, dot the map to the south and east through the peninsula. Proximity to wilderness and proximity to history gives Mérida the qualities of uno pueblo magico – a place where the modern, colonial and indigenes intersect in a pouring out of creativity and yes, magic. Our driver Daniel explains as we buzz through the parched bush of the Yucatán, that uno pueblo magico also has excellent food and artisans, touched by the Mayan equivalent to the muses. This sounds perfect to me, who’s coming to Mérida for a weekend of relaxation, and perhaps a little magico.
THE STAY
The michelin guide has a famous criterion for three stars, “Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.” To me, Coqui Coqui is an exceptional experience, worth a special journey to the heart of the Yucatán. Nestled on the bathroom counter of models, celebrities, and hip urbanites, the perfumery’s products are distinct in their jungle meets old world elegance aesthetic. Their scents conjure up images of colonial haciendas, overrun with the flora and fauna of the Yucatán, Coqui Coqui’s base of operations and source for inspiration and ingredients. The line of thirteen scents extends from candles and perfumes to bath oils, linen sprays and custom amenities for each of their four residences, each of which has a personalized fragrance. Tulum is dewy coconut, Coba is lush and green mint, Vallodolid is roses dried with tobacco, and Mérida is the scent of cigar box, inspired by the surrounding tobacco plantations.
The residence in Mérida is why I’m here. The last time I was in Tulum, I enjoyed a few meals at Coqui Coqui and was immediately charmed. The style was effortless and worn in, the tiny perfumery was an unexpected gem on that stretch of beach, and the chicken mole sandwiches were enough to sell me on their own. My trip to Tulum overall was not the quiet journey I was hoping for, but it introduced me to the Yucatán – it’s food, history, and culture – and that was something I wanted to explore further. Coqui Coqui had residences dotted across the peninsula, and I had heard of Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán state, as a pastel oasis in the jungle. Trusting that planning a trip around a Coqui Coqui residence would be worth it, I booked the trip. The hotel was full for almost every night of my window, but I was able to secure a spot. I booked the rest of my trip at the other premier boutique hotel and spa in Mérida, Rosas y Xocolate.
Arriving at Coqui Coqui, near Parque de Santa Lucia in the heart of Mérida, my husband and I enter through the L’Epicerie, a small boutique shimmering with Coqui Coqui’s bottles of perfume and glass candles. Beatrice, the manager, welcomes us. An Italian expat living in Mérida, she’s effortlessly chic but matter-of-fact in tone. Throughout my stay I pepper her with questions, running my itinerary past her to make sure it passes muster. Fortunately there are only a few adjustments she suggests. We’ve arrived early, so we take a seat in the spa courtyard, a cement tiled space shaded by lofty plastered walls and vines. The cook brings out a little cake and a selection of signature teas for us to try, offering some local honey to go with it. The space is small but maximized. Sitting on a 4000 square foot lot (and this is just me eyeballing it), the residence is indeed a home. Completely private with 15 foot walls, every inch serves a purpose. The marble kitchen opens onto the patio for easy access, the fountain echoes off of the tile near the outdoor bathtub and one room spa; stairs curls up to an outdoor breakfast patio, and further still to a wading pool. When we get to our room, it occurs to me that this is all for just us.
The residence is a one room hotel, where the guest gets the entire upstairs floor and patio to themselves. The room itself is gorgeously appointed in a stripped down, colonial style. High ceilings with rich drapes accenting the cement tile floor and minimalist decor, I got practically giddy as I bounced around the easily thousand square foot space. The canopy bed was large with soft, thin sheets; there were two gigantic bath tubs side by side, and then there was the amenities bag. I’m not above lusting over the free soap at a hotel, and I hoarded the contents of this bag like dragon’s gold. A mini bath oil and perfume in both Tabaco and Flor de Naranjo, hand soaps in both scents, custom shampoo and conditioner, and even chic little toothbrushes in tortoise and black were squirreled away into my suitcase immediately. We then walked out to the pool patio and lingered there for the afternoon.
The next morning were our spa treatments – deep tissue massages in the downstairs space. Every scent is laid out as a massage oil, including scents that are rare or hard to find back in the states. I chose Rosas Secas, which smells like an earthy fresh rose with a hint of tobacco. It’s almost impossible to find a perfect rose scent that doesn’t go powdery, soapy, or grandma’s purse, but Rosas Secas was minimalist and modern. Before the massage, you can soak in the large bath by the fountain (it’s in a very private back corner of the property) to loosen and warm up your muscles. The massage itself is deep and effective, while still being relaxing. It’s presented in an a la carte manner – no hot stones or add ons, which feels appropriate for the simplicity of the space. The other options on the spa menu include a one hour Swedish massage ($90) and a one hour organic facial made with oatmeal, honey and avocado (also $90). Loose, relaxed, and smelling wonderful, we left Coqui Coqui for a day in town.
SAFETY & TRANSPORTATION
Walking southward on the thronging Calle 58 in search of hamacas, jumping off the side walk into the street to avoid bumping abuelas exiting the bus or panaderas selling their wares, I paused at Calle 73. In two blocks I had gone from hot, noisy, and crowded to breezy silent emptiness, excluding the dozens of ladies of the night hovering on the sidewalks. That’s how quickly Mérida can change. One block is Easter Egg colonial mansions and the next is empty tiendas with “for rent” signs. It’s a technicolor checkerboard. As a rule, the farther norther you go, especially via the major avenues, the tonier (and honestly, more boring) you get. All of a sudden the panaderas are replaced by Starbucks (I counted three in a ten minute cab ride), and the high-end restaurants are in curated strip malls. The farther south you go, the less developed, commercial, and safe it gets. The happy balance is in el centro, near the Casa Montejo, where the plazas, shops, and snacks, coalesce into the perfect hour long walk. Mérida is on a convenient grid system, with odd numbered streets running east/west and even numbered streets running north/ south. It’s almost impossible to find street numbers, so most places are described by the cross streets. The city is quite safe north of Calle 65, but during the evening it’s best to take a taxi if you have to walk more than a few minutes.
WHAT TO PACK
The best time to visit Mérida, or the Yucatán in general, is from the late fall through the spring. That’s when the tropical weather is its least humid and most yielding. No rain and temperatures in the mid 80s welcomed me as the plane touched down twenty minutes from the center of Mérida. The locals kept mentioning how cold it got at night, but I never noticed more than a 15 degree difference – compared to the frigid evening air of Mexico City (dropping from 70 in the day to 40 at night). The tone is quite casual in the day, and just barely less so in the evening, though I didn’t notice any requirements beyond a shirt on your back and shoes on your feet.
Packing List:
1 pair comfortable, chic sandals 1 pair close toed shoes – or climbing down to the cenotes or exploring ancient ruins, my snakeskin slip ons were fine for this, as would be desert boots.
2 light weight shirts – cotton is best.
1 pair shorts
1 pair light pants – linen or silk is ideal.
2 dresses, one light day dress and one slightly more formal one
1 bathing suit
1 light jacket – I had a white Jenni Kayne silk blazer I wore at night.
1 light sweater or shawl – I had a traditional rebozo scarf by Carla Fernandez to throw on when the nights got cold.
A giant hat – The sun can pound on your skin, so a big, light straw hat is best)
Sunglasses – Shield yourself from the sunlight bouncing off the pale colonial buildings.
Sunscreen – I prefer Aesop’s 50 spf sunscreen; great protection with none of the usual additives found in generic sunscreens.
Dry Shampoo – the weather leans toward humid, so expect to use a bunch of this to give your hair texture. Bug Spray – If you’re visiting during the wet season,or immediately after it, make sure to spray yourself before venturing out to areas like the cenotes or ruins.
SHOPPING
Other than camping out inside Coqui Coqui’s L’Espicerie, the shopping in Mérida is varied in quality and style, but not category. The area is best known for its astonishing weavings, and you need to pick up una hamaca (a hammock), una guayabera (men’s linen shirt), una huipil (a women’s embroidered tunic, or any number of baskets, blankets, and rugs.
Note about haggling: Some shops expect haggling, others recoil at it, and it’s pretty easy to tell the difference. Curated shops with hangers and a specifically styled aesthetic tend to have the prices locked in, and if you attempt to haggle you will look awkward and boorish. Shops near the plaza with stack and stacks of rugs next to exploding shelves of pottery expect and encourage a good haggle. The best I managed was 40% off the price tag.
Hammocks: The best hammocks I found (and I went in dozens of shops) were in Guayaberas Tita (Calle 59 between 60 and 62), but Hamacas Maya gets an honorable mention. Not only was there a ton of variety, but Juan, the owner, also does custom orders. I placed my order on the first day of my trip and picked it up on my way to the airport. There are hammocks woven specifically for tourists that are only woven with one line of thread. The result is a rather flimsy contraption that can unspool the second there is a cut or tear anywhere. Locals use the five threaded hammocks, woven with very thin twine for the most comfortable experience. Practically every home in the area has one hanging in its porch, usually occupied during siesta. I longed for a hammock with fringe or tassels, but those typically have pieces of wood forcing the hammock to lie flat. I ended up ordering two hammocks, both with the higher quality five thread weave, in a natural cotton, without madera (wood) and with orilla (tassles), but not macrame, and haggled Juan down to $75 each. The cheaper, single thread hammocks cost closer to $30 each, and the gorgeous sisal ones (an agave fiber) at Coqui Coqui are about $300 each, to give you a comparison.
Guayaberas y Huipil
The guayabera is the iconic Cuban button down, worn untucked, usually paired with a cigar and straw hat, worn by heavies of the early 20th century. After the Cuban revolution, Yucatecans started weaving the popular shirt themselves. For the best ones, try Guayaberas Jack in the center of town (Calle 59 between 60 and 62), but skip on the cheap poly blends. Find the pure linen ones for the most authentic look, and comfort. Huipil are easily found all over the city, but my favorite were at Color Amor (Calle 55 between Calle 56 and Calle 58)
Other artisanal goods:
Coqui Coqui L’Espicerie // Calle 55 between Calle 64 and Calle 66
This is a must stop if spending the day in Mérida. Not only can you pick up a hard to find scent or bath product (I bought both Rosas Secas and Naranjo Negro perfume), you can also find locally created jewelry, and rebozo dresses – made of fabric woven on a waist loom – designed by Francesca Bonato, the co owner of Coqui Coqui. Honestly, I could’ve come to Mérida with the clothes on my back, shopped there, and would have been ready for the rest of my trip.
Kukul Boutik // Calle 55 between Calle 56 and Calle 58
This curated boutique is definitely more put together than the average artisan shop in the area. They carry the usual mix of woven and embroidered pieces, but their woven sisal (agave) pillowcases are especially beautiful.
Casa de las ArtesanaIas // Calle 63 between Calle 64 and Calle 66
This is a definite tourist spot, so don’t expect quality here. However, there is a large selection here and everything is quite inexpensive.
Ki Xocolatl // Calle 53 between Calle 60 and Calle 62 (inside the Parque de Santa Lucia) A belgian chocolatier in the Yucatán started this little chocolate boutique. You can purchase a cup of velvety hot chocolate, but I opted for bars of their pink peppercorn studded chocolate bars instead.
El Estudio // Paseo de Montejo between Calle 41 and Calle 43 (further north, near the Palacio Canton) This boutique has a fun, funky vibe of a 90s Urban Outfitters. Glitter crusted matchbooks emblazoned with a portrait of Frida Kahlo, vibrant skulls, and hand painted glassware fill the shelves.
FOOD & DRINK
: I might be biased by my pseudo-hipster ways, but the most flavorful, most delicious, and best food was from the local spots rather than the white tablecloth restaurants.
Street Food Tips: Stick to the places with the longest lines. If they’re popular, then they aren’t getting people sick regularly. Also look for older, professional types. Doctors, lawyers, and cops can’t afford to get sick from street meat, so they’ll be conservative with where they get their street food. Teenagers, on the other hand, play more fast and loose.
Look around: Does it look clean? Is food left sitting around? Use your eyes and nose to tell you if the food looks good to you. If you’re apprehensive, just walk to the next cart. Better safe than sorry!
Water/Ice: Potable water is an issue in Mexico, so if you’re buying a respado (shaved ice) or an icy drink, make sure it’s from a place that uses filtered water.
Have a plan: I’m a research nut, so I looked up street food spots in Tulum that my favorite food writers and publications recommended. It makes the hunt so much easier!
Marlin Azul // Calle 62 between Calle 57 and Calle 59
This tiny restaurant is possibly the best seafood in Mérida. There are a few different options on the menu, but honestly, when a giant platter of ceviche is in front of you, how can you think of anything else? The habanero salsa is especially good here as well.
El Cangrejito // Calle 57 between Calle 64 and Calle 66
Fish tacos for breakfast? Yes indeed, but a far departure from the Ensenada style. These are fresh, served with different sauces and garnishes. You walk up to the front and just point at whatever fillings you like. We got one of everything: bacalao with capers, fried white fish, camarones ceviche, and my favorite, the langostino.
La Michoacana // Multiple locations
Paletas are a must, and La Michoacana is an easy choice. There’s a rainbow of flavors, but mamey is my favorite. If you’re not familiar, it’s a tropical fruit that’s fuzzy and brown on the outside (not unlike a kiwi) and with a rich red flesh that tastes like sweet potato pie. But hey, I won’t blame you if you go with mango con chile.
El Colón Sorbetes y Dulces Finos // Two locations, up on Paseo de Montejo and in the Zocalo
Situated right across the zócalo (main square), El Colón has been serving freshly made sorbet (without extra sugar and preservatives) for one hundred year. The tables on the sidewalk are perfect for people watching and cooling off on a sweltering Meridian afternoon. I ordered my favorite, mamay, but try the guava or tamarindo for a bright kick.
Apaola // Calle 53 between Calle 60 and Calle 62 (inside the Parque de Santa Lucia)
Combining Mexican, Oaxacan, and Yucatecan influences, Apaola is a favorite restaurant amongst travelers. Located inside Parque de Santa Lucia, the restaurant spills out onto a lovely courtyard. The menu is filled with modern fusion dishes (the appetizers were best, so I’d recommend ordering more of those), so don’t expect to find cochinita pibil on the menu. The mezcal and tequila selection is excellent, and the restaurant is very popular, so make sure to make reservations.
Tacos at Wayané, Mérida, Mexico // The corner of Calle 20 and Calle 15 just north of the Parque de Itzimná
Pronounced “why-en-AY,” the name is Mayan for, “here we are.” That’s the perfect name for this taco stand, a favorite amongst locals. This is an almuerzo spot. It’s not breakfast or lunch, but mid morning snack time. The Loría family have run the Wayan’e street stand for 20 years. They serve savory tacos and tortas throughout the morning, scooping flavorful fillings like smoky chicken fajitas and scrambled eggs with Swiss chard out of clay pots that customers point to. All dishes are from 8 to 12 pesos. Everything is cooked fresh every morning and when the food is gone, the place closes down for the day, usually by 2:00 pm. It’s a drive from the center of town, so expect to taxi.
Néctar // Av. Andrés García Lavín, between Calle 41 and Calle 43
Mérida’s newest haute cuisine restaurant is Nectar, where the ambitious chef Roberto Solis, having done time in the kitchens of Noma, Per Se, and the Fat Duck, plays with indigenous flavors and French techniques. My favorite dish was actually the dessert, which played with texture of coconut and was dusted with charred rosemary.
K’u’uk // Paseo de Montejo and Calle 27A (on the round about)
Taking haute cuisine a step further, K’u’uk presents symbolic and metaphoric dishes, relating to Mayan culture. Chef Pedro Evia utilizes locally sourced ingredients and inventive modern gastronomy to create a palette bending experience. If you’re going to do one “big meal” on your trip to Mérida, go here.
Chaya Maya // On the corner of Calle 57 and Calle 62
I’m usually leery of restaurants where servers dress up in traditional costumes, seeing it as a ploy for tourists, but Chaya Maya is actually enjoyed by the local population as well. This place is all about the Yucatán, so go for Los Tres Mosqueteros, or The Three Musketeers, for a nice overview of three classic Yucatecan dishes: relleno negro (a black sauce made from burnt chiles and spices) over pork; papadzul (egg enchiladas); and pipián (a sauce with a pumpkin seed base) over turkey. There are several other locations, but I like this one’s low key energy
Kii Wik // Avenida Garcia Lavin and Calle 37-B
From the team behind K’u’uk, Kii Wik is a small cafe in the tonier part of town. It’s pretty busy, but has excellent coffee and chilequiles, along with a cute bakery and gourmet shop.
Oliva Enoteca & Kitchen // On the corner of Calle 47 & Calle 54
If you don’t feel like Mexican, Oliva is a beautiful choice. With wine personally selected by the Chef to complement the cuisine, and modern rustic dishes that include an array of burrata, lemon scented ricotta with shrimp, daily fish, and simple antipasti, it’s a beautiful bit of Europe in the heart of the Yucatán.
Poxeria // Paseo de Montejo between Calle 41 and Calle 43 (further north, near the Palacio Canton)
Located next door to El Estudio (the boutique I mentioned above), we stumbled across this coffee and pox (pronounced posh) shop quite unexpectedly. The coffee is from Chiapas and honestly, the best we had in Mérida. Pox is an interesting choice when you’re over mezcal – it’s corn based and tastes quite a bit like moonshine, which isn’t surprising considering that it’s 53% ABV.
Hacienda Teya // Mérida-Cancún Highway, Kilometer 12.5 (about 20 minutes outside of Mérida)
Inside this 17th-century plantation that switched from cattle to henequen, used for making rope, at the end of the 19th century, is a boisterous family restaurant. Large tables are packed with families enjoying a post-misas (we were there on Sunday) meal. Surprisingly, there were no tourists, just locals. Try the classics like sopa de lima, or the sample platter that includes cochinita pibil, Puntas de filete al xcatic, and poc chuc.
SIGHTS
Catedral de Mérida // Calle 60 between Calle 61 and Calle 63
This almost 500 year old Cathedral hovers over the city center, with a constant flow of observants moving in and out of its imposing doors. Finished in 1598, the cathedral is a combination of late renaissance and early baroque styles, with obvious influence from the Roman and Moorish tinged Andalusia.
Casa de Montejo // Calle 63 between Calle 60 and Calle 62
A bank is now housed behind the brilliant façade of this extremely rare example of 16th century civil architecture, but take a step in, and you’ll find a small free museum featuring seasonal exhibits and a preserved dining room from the original house. The ceiling frescoes are gorgeous and the gift shop is actually a lovely mix of artisanal products that aren’t seen anywhere else in the city.
Palacio Cantón // Paseo de Montejo between Calle 41 and Calle 43
Nestled in the center of Paseo de Montejo, an avendue lined with henequen funded Beaux Arts-style mansions, lies the Palacio Cantón. Built in the first decade of the twentieth century as a family residence for General Canton (one of the most prominent figures of his time), it now houses the Mayan Anthropological Museum. Since 1980, its permanent exhibition about the pre-Hispanic Mayan society is presented on the main floor, with exhibitions, educational workshops and cultural events offered upstairs.
Chichén Itzá
An hour and a bit away from Mérida The stepped pyramids, temples, columned arcades, and other stone structures of Chichén Itzá were sacred to the Maya, and the center of their spiritual life from A.D. 750 to 1200. Go in the afternoon, when the Temple of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo, reveals itself in the light. This impressive step pyramid demonstrates the accuracy and importance of Maya astronomy, which is specifically oriented to catch the light, creating the illusion of an undulating feathered snake going down the steps. This even happens in the afternoon, and is easier to see the closer you are to the spring solstice. The previous structure was 17 degrees off, so the Mayans made an adjustment, and 52 years later (as dictated by their calendar to be a full period cycle) corrected it with the structure that now stands. The whole complex is awe inspiring in scope, especially when you realize they built it without the use of wheels. We wandered over to the ball court, the largest in the Americas measuring 554 feet long and 231 feet wide. These ritual games were a spiritual rite, with two teams of seven trying to hit a rubber ball through an impossible looking small, high hoop. The winner was put to death, a fact that a German couple on the tour with us refused to believe. It was considered an honor to die, as the games were for the gods’ glory, and not the players.
Cenotes
There are cenotes all of the region, but the one we stopped by on our way back from Chichén Itzá, near Yokdzonot. A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, that exposes groundwater underneath, sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings (usually women who would jump in as an sacrifice to the water god, Chaac). Now they’re open as little oases in the jungle heat. There are three different types of cenotes: jug cenotes, with a small hole at the top; cave cenotes, where you enter through a cave; and my favorite, cylinder cenotes which have vertical walls. The reason why those are my favorite is a bit vain, but I like how beautifully cylinder cenotes photograph. The light bounces on the light, adventurous swimmers can dive in from high up the side, and tree roots dangle overhead. Skip Progresso Beach, which is very privatized and a bit of a challenge to navigate if you’re unfamiliar with the area, and jump into a cenote instead.

Warm & Welcoming: 10 Guest Bedroom Essentials
These 10 guest bedroom essentials will help you make an ideal retreat for your visitors. Image: 2id Interiors
We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.
When decorating your home, the guest bedroom is often an afterthought. After all, why put your favorite pieces in the room you’ll visit the least? Leaving room in your guest room also gives anyone who stays with you the opportunity to spread out and get comfortable in the space. This doesn’t mean the room should feel spartan, though.
There are a few guest bedroom essentials that can help make the space feel welcoming and ensure your guests are comfortable. We’ve put together a handy list of 10 guest bedroom essentials. Add these items to the room to create an ideal retreat for any visitor.
A cozy throw makes the space feel welcoming – and might help your guests sleep. Image: Crate & Barrel
An extra blanket
If you’ve ever stayed overnight in a chilly room, you’ve probably longed for an extra blanket. Make sure your guests can easily find one. A cozy throw, like the Covella Chunky Throw from Crate & Barrel, laid across the foot of the bed or thrown over a chair ensures your guests are able to get a good night’s rest.
A water carafe on the nightstand is a thoughtful touch. Image: Pottery Barn
Water
No guest likes to have to navigate to the kitchen in the middle of the night for a glass of water. Even if you’ve got nightlights set up, finding a cup in the darkened kitchen is a daunting task. Save your guests the hassle and put some water on their bedside table for them. The Classic Glass Decanter from Pottery Barn has a cup built in so your visitor has everything they need for a refreshing drink in one convenient package.
A small alarm clock can come in handy for your guests. Image: CB2
A clock
Even though cell phones are omnipresent in our culture, it’s still nice to check the time without lighting up that addictive screen. A small clock in your guest room makes life a little more convenient – and a little less phone-dependent – for your guests. The Charlie Gold Alarm Clock from CB2 even invites them to revisit the days before they set alarms on their phones.
Give guests the opportunity to make themselves presentable before facing the world by adding a mirror. Image: Cost Plus World Market
A mirror
If your room doesn’t have a bathroom en suite, you need to add one more item to the list of guest bedroom essentials: a mirror. Without a mirror, you force guests to face you without the opportunity to properly clean the sleep out of their eyes in the morning. Plus, a larger mirror like the Sana Brass Mirror from Cost Plus World Market will help brighten the room.
Make life more convenient for your guests with a bedside lamp that has a USB port. Image: AllModern
A bedside lamp
Nobody likes to have to get out of bed to turn the lights off before going to sleep. Add a lamp to the nightstand so your guests can stay cozy in bed. Plus, the latest technology can help you take your hosting to the next level. This Alperton Table Lamp comes equipped with a USB port to make it easier for your guests to charge their phones. Those little conveniences make all the difference.
Frame your WiFi password to give guests critical information in a design-forward way. Image: H&M
Your WiFi password
Speaking of digital conveniences, don’t force your guests off the grid. Put your WiFi password in a frame and place it on the nightstand. A classic option like this Metal Frame from H&M (available in black or white) will dress up the information and help draw the eye to it so your visitors can easily connect.
A small trashcan is a functional addition to any guest room. Image: The Container Store
A trashcan
A trashcan might not seem like a natural fit on a list of guest bedroom essentials, but traveling often creates waste. Give your guests a convenient place to toss boarding passes, granola bar wrappers and water bottles. A compact, nondescript trashcan like this sleek Brabantia Matte Black Step Can from The Container Store will be a welcome addition to travelers without taking over the design of the guest bedroom.
Light a candle in the guest room just before your visitors arrive to create ambiance. Image: Urban Outfitters
A candle
While some guest bedroom essentials are practical, others are just nice. A lit, softly scented candle welcomes road-weary travelers into their home for the evening. Set a beautiful candle like the Boho Candle from Urban Outfitters on a nightstand and light it just before your guests arrive. The warm glow and welcoming scent lets them know they can relax.
Create a convenient place to unpack with a luggage rack or bench. Image: West Elm
A luggage rack
Travelers come with luggage. Don’t force them to unpack their suitcases on the floor. Add a luggage rack, or a more stylish equivalent like the Mid-Century Storage Bench from West Elm, to the room. An elevated surface where they can access their packed bags makes living in your guest room more comfortable and convenient.
Quality hangers let your guests know it’s okay to use the closet space. Image: The Container Store
Hangers
While a place to put luggage makes inhabiting your guest room more convenient, you don’t want to force your guests to live out of their suitcases. Leave closet space empty (or, at least, mostly empty) and stock it with hotel-quality hangers like these Walnut Wood Hangers from The Container Store. This lets guests know they can make use of the space, helping them get settled into your guest room.
These ten guest bedroom essentials will help you create a comfortable, welcoming space for anyone who visits your home overnight. But this list is by no means comprehensive. We also have a guide to creating the ideal guest bathroom.
What little additions have made you feel especially at home when staying over at a friend or family member’s home? Let us know in the comments.

A classic option like this Metal Frame from H&M (available in black or white) will dress up the information and help draw the eye to it so your visitors can easily connect.

It was nearly 18 years ago that my husband and I discussed potentially relocating from Lexington, KY to Atlanta, GA.  There were many things we liked about Atlanta, and one of them was it’s location:  You can drive to the Atlantic Coast in around 5 hours, and down to the Gulf of Mexico in about 6.  And there’s a huge international airport that can fly you to pretty much anywhere else.
When the kids were young, almost all of our trips were to Florida, both the Gulf side and the Atlantic side.  It’s an easy getaway for families, and there are so many different things to explore, we rarely did or saw the same thing twice.  We have also travelled to the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in Alabama a few times, both much like the Gulf destinations in Florida.  Besides Florida and Alabama, we’ve also hit up the Savannah, GA and Tybee Island area, as well as Charleston and Folly Beach areas in SC.
The trees on the island are amazing
We had only been to Hilton Head Island once before, and that was in January last year.  We had been in Augusta, doing some work at my parent’s rental house and decided instead of going straight home, we’d head over and check it out.  Because it was the off-season, most of the “touristy” stuff was closed, and it was too cold to sit out on the beach.  But we did enjoy a nice walk on the beach as well as some good meals at local restaurants.
ACCOMODATIONS
This time around we were heading up to watch a friend perform in the local production of Saturday Night Fever, put on by the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.  Originally, we planned on going up on Friday, but Thursday arrived and we had nothing else to do, so we decided to go a day early.  There wasn’t a lot to choose from for last minute accommodations, and the Airbnb that I had reserved for Friday and Saturday wasn’t available Thursday.  We ended up at the Park Lane Inn.  It’s not the fanciest hotel on the island, but it sufficed for one night.  The front desk area is nice, and the grounds were nicely kept, but the rooms are a bit old, with a kitchenette area, and a tiny bathroom.  All of the rooms are suites and have a little balcony (ours looked out over the parking lot).  There were several families enjoying the pool area and it’s a dog-friendly place.  The hotel provides breakfast in the morning, but we did not eat there as we wanted to head to the beach.
View from the deck of our Airbnb at Seaside Villas II
For the next two nights we stayed in an Airbnb at Seaside Villas II which are located right next to Coligny Park Beach.  This is a perfect area as you can walk to shops, restaurants, and, of course, THE BEACH.  The other nice thing is this is a gated community with an attendant out front, so you don’t have to worry about not finding parking and it is somewhat secure.  The building itself is fairly old, but the unit we stayed in was in very good condition.  It definitely was not fancy or high end, but for a casual beach weekend it worked out fine.  This complex also has a pool, but we did not visit it.  There is a lovely path from the parking lot out to the ocean.  We took a walk on the beach each evening while we were there and it was absolutely beautiful in the moonlight.  You can find rentals on VRBO, Airbnb, and other vacation rental sites.
View from room at Marriott Resort & Spa
On our previous visit in January the year before, we stayed at the Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa, which was nice.  Their ocean front pool area is beautiful and it was lovely to see the sunrise over the ocean from our balcony.  I posted an Instagram picture of our view, and the resort even re-posted it!  I recall the room being spacious and having a very comfy bed.  We did not dine at any of the on-site restaurants, but I believe there were a few.
ACTIVITIES
As far as the beaches go, they have nice, soft sand and are in good condition.  I liked being at Coligny Beach because there are restrooms and showers as well as several restaurants and shops.  If you are not at a resort or hotel that provides chairs and umbrellas, there are plenty of them set up on the beach for $35/per day.  Just grab any that do not have someone’s name or say “reserved” and someone will come to you to collect payment.  The umbrella was well worth the cost, as it was so hot while we were there; the umbrella provided nice shade and a cooler area in which to relax.  Many people bring their own chairs and umbrellas, especially families with kids but if you don’t want the hassle, rent them while you are there.
There are also lots of places to rent bikes, and lots of bike riders out and about (so be cautious when driving!)  You can also rent all the other typical beach stuff:  kayaks, paddle boards, jet skis, etc.  as well as go on tours, cruises, and ziplines.  This was a very short little weekend trip, so we did not do any of that, but plan on some of these activities for our next trip up there. We did visit the Harbour Town Light House.  It’s less than $5 to go in and climb the stairs to the top.  All along the ascent, there are pictures and artifacts to look at and read about, so it’s really like a little museum.  The view from the top is beautiful and there is (of course) a gift shop.  Harbour Town is actually in the Sea Pines Resort, and there is a small fee to get in, but there are several boutiques, shops, and restaurants all over as well as activities.  We watched a pirate cruise depart as we were having lunch at a dockside restaurant (more on that below).
For evening activities, we enjoyed music at The Jazz Corner on Friday night.  They do serve dinner there, but we had already dined elsewhere, so we just had cocktails and dessert.  It was only $15 per person to get in, and the drinks were of average price ($8-$12).  We did not have a reservation and were lucky enough to get the last available table which was right next to the stage.  The music was fabulous – I definitely recommend stopping here, but you might want to get a reservation.  And, it really is in the corner – of the strip mall.  It took us a minute to find it, as it is sort of tucked away.  The cool thing is they have outdoor seating with a large TV so you can see the show from the patio.
Our last night there was to see our friend Mary Beth in the Art Center’s production of Saturday Night Fever.  The venue is very nice, and there didn’t appear to be a bad seat in the house.  We were in the center balcony and had a perfect view of the stage.  The facility seems newer and the staff and volunteers working are all very nice.  The show was fantastic!  I recommend checking out their website to see what shows are playing during your stay and purchase tickets in advance for popular shows like this one.
    FOOD AND DINING
OK, to be completely honest, one of our favorite things to do while traveling is eat.  We love finding restaurants with quality food and good cocktails.  And a good dessert is always nice, too.  We received lots of good recommendations from friends, but unfortunately we were not able to try them all!  They are on our list (as well as listed at the bottom of this post) so we can try them out next time.
The Lucky Rooster
Draft Cocktails at The Lucky Rooster
Our first meal was probably our favorite of the trip.  We did our usual thing:  checked in to the hotel, laid on the bed and looked at Yelp for about a half hour to decide where to go.  This place had an interesting menu, cocktails that sounded like they were right up our alley, and lots of good reviews.  We did not have reservations, so we sat at the bar (which, honestly, we prefer).  We started with the fried chicken skins and a couple cocktails.  The chicken skins were good – salty and crispy, but we only ate half of them to save room for our entrees.  The lady next to us had a salad and the deviled eggs, and said that both were very good.  I tried one of their draft cocktails – the Old Brooklyn which was comprised of Larceny bourbon, a Luxardo maraschino cherry, Averna (an Italian sweet and slightly bitter liqueur), Dolin dry vermouth, Solerno blood orange, and Angostura bitters.  It was so good, I had two.  My husband ordered a craft cocktail, that he said was fantastic.  For our entrees I had a shrimp and rice dish that was very good, and my husband had the Fish and Beans, which was a crispy trout on a variety of beans including limas and field peas.  He devoured it!  We ordered coffee and the flourless skillet brownie for dessert but only ate half of it because we were so full.  The bartenders were awesome and so was the food.  Highly recommend.
Skillets Cafe
Picture from Yelp
The next morning we decided to check out of the hotel to explore the beach and get a bite to eat.  We found parking at Coligny Beach Park and wandered around the shopping area until we overheard someone recommending Skillets Cafe to another couple.  There was a 20 minute wait, so put in our name and wandered around for bit.  The hostess and servers were very nice.  My husband can’t do dairy, so he asked if he could have the seafood omelet dairy free with no cheese or sauce.  She checked with the kitchen to be sure, and determined that was fine.  I wanted a crepe, as they had several on the menu but they all had scrambled eggs in them.  Since a crepe is already made from eggs, and my stomach can’t handle very many, I asked for the veggie crepe with no scrambled eggs and a side of potatoes.  We also ordered some french toast, even though neither of us can really have it, we each wanted just a taste.  Well, apparently our special order was too confusing for the kitchen because the manager came over, sat down, and tried to understand our order.  Once we made her understand that there weren’t any allergies – just digestive issues – and explained again what we wanted, she seemed satisfied.  When the food arrived, my husband’s omelet was exactly as ordered, the french toast was fine, but my “crepe” had no crepe – it was simply a plate of veggies with a side of potatoes.  The server was going to have them re-do it and I said no, just bring over a plain crepe and I can assemble it with the veggies I had.  That said, even though the order was confusing, the service was very friendly and prompt.  As far as breakfast food goes, I’d say it’s pretty basic – nothing special but if you want eggs or pancakes or whatever the standard fair is, you’ll do just fine.
The Old Oyster Factory
Our oysters – delicious!
After breakfast, we hit the beach, then checked in to our Airbnb at 3:00.  After unpacking and showering we decided to head over to the Old Oyster Factory.  They did not have any reservations available before 8:30 (it was 5:00 on Friday) so we decided to just risk it, head over, and hopefully sit at the bar.  It’s in a beautiful location overlooking the marsh, just 20 minutes northeast of Coligny Park.  They have a large parking lot with attendants directing traffic, so there was no problem finding a spot.  It’s a large building with outdoor and indoor dining and a sort of rustic feel.  The bar area had huge floor to ceiling windows, so you could look out over the wetlands.  There were lots of families dining together, as well as couples.  The drinks and food were very good, but they had a feeling of “mass production” to them – quality food but without any special touch.  We started with some cocktails, raw oysters, and fried green tomatoes.  The oysters were very fresh and good, and the fried green tomatoes were delicious, with some sort of tomato sauce on top.  Before serving our entrees, they gave us a basket of hushpuppies that were to die for – but we didn’t want to fill up on them so we only ate a couple.  I had an almond crusted mahi-mahi served with parmesan rice and green beans.  It was very good, but the fish was a little over cooked and tough, not flakey and moist as I would have expected.  My husband had the pecan crusted grouper, also served with the parmesan rice and veggies, but this dish had a nice peach beurre blanc sauce with an onion jam on the side.  I liked his fish better than mine, as it wasn’t as dry and had better flavor.  We skipped dessert, deciding to get that somewhere else later.  All in all, a good meal, but there are definitely better places to eat.
In front of the Old Oyster Factory
Beautiful marsh outside of Old Oyster Factory
The Jazz Corner
I mentioned previously that we went here to listen to some music for our evening entertainment.  They do have a full menu and serve dinner, but since we already ate dinner, we decided to just have drinks and dessert.  By the looks of what the folks around us were eating, they have a good menu.  We ordered some cocktails – I had a French 75 (a gin and champagne drink) that was tasty; I can’t remember exactly what Chip ordered, but it had egg whites in it and was served in a coup glass – and it took a little longer for him to get his drink because, as the waiter told us, “it’s a labor intensive drink.”  We had the mini pineapple bundt cake for dessert, which pretty good, but nothing spectacular.  What was great about this place was the performers.
The Quarterdeck
Image from Instagram
The next day we met up with our friends to have lunch at the Sea Pines Resort.  We ended up at The Quarterdeck which is in Harbour Town next to the lighthouse.  We sat outside, overlooking the water.  Even though it was quite hot out, there was a little breeze coming off the water, and there were several fans from the roof of the dining area.  We each enjoyed a glass of white sangria, which was good but nothing special.  I had the crab cake BLT sandwich and it was fantastic.  I think I inhaled that thing in record time.  The other folks all had the catch of the day sandwich.  The sandwiches were all served with a pickle and fries.  The fish was fresh, and we decided we’d like to go back sometime to try their dinner menu.
Hinoki
Image from Hinoki Facebook Page
Hinoki came highly recommended from several people, all claiming it was the best sushi in Hilton Head and possibly some of the best sushi they’ve ever had.  I 100% agree that the sushi was very good, but it’s not the best I’ve ever had (I’ll have to write a post on my favorite sushi places one of these days).  We met our friends there and were promptly seated at a standard table.  They also have seating at the bar as well as tables on the floor – we considered it for a moment but decided to stick with the standard table.  They have a nice wine selection and our server was fairly knowledgeable about the wines and made some good suggestions.  We started with edamame, vegetable tempura, and a half order of ramen.  The tempura had a nice texture and the veggies were huge.  The ramen broth was delicious and the noodles nice and chewy – I think I would have liked to have a whole bowl of it for my entree, but I was there for the sushi.  We ordered a variety of rolls as well as their Tuna Three Ways.  I also ordered some nigiri – white tuna and mackerel, my two favorites – but sadly they did not have the mackerel ready for the evening, so I had to choose an alternate and went with yellow tail.  The fish in the rolls and nigiri was all very fresh, tender, and clean tasting.  The sushi came out on a large platter for sharing, which was nice.  It seemed like a lot of sushi, but we devoured it!  They also offer several cooked entrees, teriyaki, and for lunch they serve bento boxes.  If you like sushi and are in Hilton Head, check out Hinoki.  I know I’ll be back one of these days!
Hilton Head Diner
Photo from Yelp
Our or way out of town on Sunday morning, we headed over to the Hilton Head Diner.  The place was packed!  Fortunately, our friends had called ahead and secured a table for us.  It is your typical diner with all the normal stuff you’d expect for breakfast.  There also had some wonderful sounding specials, like Oreo pancakes and an Italian sausage and eggs plate.  Unfortunately, after a weekend of indulging in delicious food and drinks, my stomach just could not handle another heavy meal.  I settled for some hash browns and fresh fruit, but looking around me, everything that was being served at the other tables looked good, and the folks in my group all enjoyed their breakfast.  And, if the crowd was any indication, it’s a pretty popular spot.
The Places We Didn’t Get To
So, there were lots of recommendations from a variety of friends, but since it was a quick weekend trip, we just didn’t have time to get to them all.  I compiled a list of all the recommendations below, and hope to try them out some day.  My husband and I both agree that a trip back in the fall would be nice, when it isn’t quite as hot.
Skull Creek – Recommended by several people, so I’m bummed we didn’t make it there.  The menu looks fantastic, and they are supposed to have amazing seafood as well as good lunch and dinner specials.  Outdoor bar tabletops are first come first serve, and the sunsets are spectacular.
Black Marlin – Besides good food for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, the Hurricane Bar is supposed to be a fun place to hang out, and there is live music.  Check their event schedule online.
Red Fish – This is the “sister restaurant” of the Old Oyster Factory.  It’s award-winning and has an extensive wine list and a retail wine shop with over 1000 bottles.  We’ve heard this place is fabulous for dinner, but be sure to make a reservation.
Vine – This place is highly rated on Yelp, and was recommended by a few friends.  Very nice, and good for a “kid-free” meal.  Definitely on the “next time we go” list!

Why Shinjuku Is The Best Area to Stay in Tokyo
New Post has been published on https://www.furilia.com/why-shinjuku-is-the-best-area-to-stay-in-tokyo/
Why Shinjuku Is The Best Area to Stay in Tokyo
It is difficult deciding where to stay in Tokyo, especially for your first time here, as it’s such a huge city with many diverse neighbourhoods. Although it’s easy to get around by train and metro, I prefer to walk where possible so wanted to stay in an area with lots to do and tasty eats nearby.
The number one priority when choosing the best area to stay in Tokyo is good transport links. The size of the city can be overwhelming and sights are spread out, so you need to be able to get around easily. Taxis are expensive so it’s best to use the trains and metro—there’s a massive complicated network in the city.
Ideally choose somewhere to stay on the JR Yamanote train line which makes a loop around the city and many of the main attractions are accessible from it.
On our last two visits, we also chose to stay within walking distance of a major JR train station—Shinjuku and Shibuya—so that arriving and leaving the city would be easy, without an extra train trip.
You’ll also save money on transport costs by choosing Tokyo accommodation in an area with plenty of things to do, shopping, and restaurants within walking distance.
We’ve stayed in three different areas on our three visits to Tokyo—Nishi Ogikubo, Shinjuku, and Shibuya. I think Shinjuku is by far the best place to stay in Tokyo and here’s why:
Why Shinjuku Is The Best Area to Stay in Tokyo
It Looks Like Classic Tokyo
Shinjuku view from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
Shinjuku is the modern Tokyo you dream of—a futuristic city of neon lights, towering skyscrapers, huge electronic stores, noisy arcades, gaudy pachinko parlours, and busy train stations.
There’s a great mix of business, shopping, entertainment, food, and quiet parks. There’s a bustling atmosphere and just walking the streets is exciting—especially on your first visit to the city when you can’t get over the fact that you are finally here!
There’s always plenty going on, but we didn’t find it overwhelmingly crowded, and there are quiet streets and parks to escape to. Shinjuku is the world’s busiest station, though, so avoid it at rush hour.

Memory Lane
Memory Lane
One of the things I love most about Shinjuku is the mix of modern and traditional. Memory Lane (Omoide Yokocho) is my favourite street in Tokyo, and although it’s right next to Shinjuku Station and neon billboards tower over it, it feels like you’ve stepped back in time as you wander the narrow alleyways that have barely changed since WW2. It’s a great place to grab some yakitori from one of the tiny restaurants that seat just a few people at the counter.
Delicious Varied Food
Spicy vegan ramen at Ramen Ouka
Shinjuku is one of the best locations for foodies in Tokyo. Even as vegetarians we had a vast amount of choice within a 15-minute walk of our Airbnb from high-end kaiseki to vending machine ramen joints. There is something for every taste and budget.
Here are our favourite places to eat in Shinjuku:
Zen – Delicious okonomiyaki cooked on the grill in front of you with traditional and modern varieties including vegetarian options.
Shinjuku Gyoen Ramen Ouka – Halal and vegan ramen ordered from a vending machine—the spicy ramen is so good!
Tsunahachi – High-end tempura without the high prices. Get the lunch set for the best deal.
Milk Land – A cute vegetarian cafe with a great value lunch set.
Curry House CoCo Ichibanya – The Memory Lane branch of this curry chain has a vegetarian menu.
See my guide to vegetarian restaurants in Tokyo for more details.
Walking Distance to Sights
The insane Robot Restaurant show
There are lots of things to do in Shinjuku:
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building – Get a free view of the Tokyo skyline. In the mornings you might see Mt Fuji and at night you can see the city lit up.
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden – One of Tokyo’s most beautiful parks.
Robot Restaurant – The most insane show you’ll ever see. Read our Robot Restaurant review.
Yoyogi Park and Harajuku – It’s a longish but pleasant walk from Shinjuku.
Read my guide to cool things to do in Tokyo for more details.
Transport Links
Shinjuku is extremely well connected for exploring the city. The train lines we found most useful were the Yamanote line which makes a loop around many of the city’s main areas and the Chuo line which heads to Tokyo Station (for bullet trains) and out to the Ghibli Museum.
There are also metro lines, direct access to the airport on the comfortable Narita Express, and direct access to Hakone (perfect if you want to take a day trip to see Mount Fuji).
Golden Gai
The narrow streets of the Golden Gai (before it gets busy later in the night).
If you are looking for nightlife, Shinjuku has plenty of options. The most atmospheric place to bar hop is the unique Golden Gai, a network of narrow lanes with dozens of tiny bars.
Shopping
We’re not shoppers but even we couldn’t resist exploring Shinjuku’s many stores. There are huge electronics shops like BIC Camera and Yobobashi where you can find an incredible range of computer and camera equipment; department stores like Takashimaya and Isetan for clothes, homeware, and fantastic food basements; and Uniqlo for affordable but quality basic clothing. There’s something for everyone from high-end fashion to discount souvenirs.
Affordable Accommodation
What surprised me most about Shinjuku is how affordable accommodation is considering it’s the best area to stay in Tokyo. Again you have something for everyone from luxury hotels to budget hostels plus some of Japan’s more quirky accommodation like love hotels, capsule hotels and manga kissa.
Read our Japan Accommodation Guide for details on the range of options.
Where to Stay in Shinjuku
When choosing where to stay in Shinjuku, keep in mind the different areas—west of the station is the business area, east is for shopping and nightlife, and northeast is the Kabukicho red light district and Golden Gai for nightlife and entertainment. This is Japan, so the red light district doesn’t feel dangerous or even that seedy, although we were never there late at night.
We stayed in east Shinjuku, close to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, which was the ideal location for us.
Airbnbs in Shinjuku
We found renting Airbnb apartments in Tokyo to be better value and more convenient than hotels. The cheapest are studio apartments that are very small (you have to pay a lot for space in Tokyo) but well-equipped.
We stayed in this Central Shinjuku apartment and had a tiny kitchen, washing machine, fast WiFi, comfy chairs, and a semi-double (rather hard) bed. The helpful host provided detailed instructions on how to find the apartment which is in a quiet area a 10-minute walk from Shinjuku Station and a few minutes from two metro stations. We were able to self-check in by picking up the keys from the mailbox. It cost about $100 per night including service and cleaning fees.
Hotels in Shinjuku
If you’d prefer a hotel in Shinjuku, here are some options that look ideal:
Luxury
Hotel Park Hyatt Tokyo – If my budget were unlimited I’d stay here for luxury rooms (from $500) and fantastic views of the city. It’s where the movie Lost in Translation was filmed and is one of the best hotels in Tokyo.
Mid-Range
Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku – A popular mid-range hotel very close to the station with comfortable rooms from $130.
Citadines Shinjuku Tokyo – Stylish studio rooms with kitchenette a 15-minute walk from the station from $134.
Budget
Imano Tokyo Hostel – Japanese-style double rooms with shared bathrooms from $74 and dorm beds from $30.

Where to Stay in Tokyo: Other Areas to Consider
Although I recommend Shinjuku as the best place to stay in Tokyo for most people, you might want to consider one of these other neighbourhoods.
In general, the west side of the city including Shinjuku and Shibuya are busy and modern, and the east is quieter and more traditional.
This map shows the main stations in the areas mentioned below.
Shibuya
The busy Shibuya Crossing
Like Shinjuku, Shibuya is a convenient place to stay with good transport links and lots going on. It’s home to the famous Shibuya Crossing and is popular for shopping and nightlife, especially with teenagers. It’s in walking distance of Yoyogi Park and Harajuku for alternative fashion shops and teenagers in crazy outfits.
We didn’t like staying in Shibuya as much as Shinjuku, though. The crowds were overwhelming, and although we stayed in a quiet area we had to walk down a busy street to get to the station. Accommodation is more expensive and we didn’t find the food as good.
We stayed in an Airbnb studio apartment a 10-minute walk from Shibuya Station. It was tiny and a little dark but well-equipped with a kitchen, washing machine, fast WiFi, table, couch, and double bed. Self-check-in was easy.
Hotels are usually quite expensive in Shibuya (and even more so in Harajuku). Shibuya Hotel En has small rooms in the heart of the action from $125.

Asakusa
Sensoji Temple in Asakusa
If you are wondering where to stay in Tokyo on a budget, consider Asakusa, a quieter, more traditional neighbourhood in the east of the city. It’s home to the famous Sensoji temple and you’ll find many traditional restaurants in this area. It’s a little out of the way, so it’ll take longer to get around the city, but there are still many transport links.
Asakusa has some good value hostels like K’s House Hostel which has twin rooms with shared bathroom from $65 and dorm beds from $20.
Search for hotels in Asakusa here.
Tokyo Station
The biggest advantage of staying near Tokyo Station is the transport links as you can easily get around the city as well as take the bullet trains around the country to places like Kyoto. It’s also near the Imperial Palace and park. There isn’t as much of an atmosphere or many things to do in this part of the city, though.
The five-star Marunouchi Hotel is one of the best hotels near Tokyo Station. It’s just a few minutes walk away and has double rooms from $250.

Off the Beaten Track
If you don’t mind having to take the train to all the sights you can save money, get more space, escape the crowds, and experience local life by staying in a neighbourhood off-the-beaten-track. This can work well for stays of a week or more.
On our first week-long trip to Tokyo, we stayed in a great value apartment in Nishi Ogikubo. We loved the quiet but interesting neighbourhood with its antique shops, vintage clothes stores, and narrow streets full of tiny restaurants. It was only a 15-minute train ride from Shinjuku, but we did end up finding the extra distance inconvenient.
Airbnb is a great way to find apartments and private rooms off-the-beaten-track.
Tokyo Tips

For our food recommendations see our guide to the best vegetarian restaurants in Tokyo.
Book Tokyo accommodation well in advance if you are travelling in the late March to mid-April cherry blossom season or November autumn foliage season.
Get a Suica card to use on all trains and metro lines in Tokyo. It’s much easier than figuring out which ticket you need for a particular line.
Use Google Maps and Hyperdia to check train times and distances and to see how far your accommodation is from the places you want to visit.
I definitely think Shinjuku is the best place to stay in Tokyo, especially for first-timers, as it’s affordable, accessible, and has plenty going on. But Tokyo is such a wonderful city with great transport links so I’m sure you’ll have a fantastic time wherever you choose to stay.
