Veterinary Infectious Disease Diagnostics Market Trends 2023 | Segmentation, Outlook, Industry Report to 2033
The global Veterinary Infectious Disease Diagnostics Market is projected to have a high-paced CAGR of 10.1% during the forecast period. The current valuation of the veterinary infectious disease diagnostics market is US$ 1.9 billion in 2023. The value of the veterinary infectious disease diagnostics market is anticipated to reach a high of US$ 4.9 billion, by the year 2033.
The market for veterinary infectious disease diagnostics is expected to expand over the coming years due to rising numbers of veterinarians in developed economies and expanding disease control and illness prevention initiatives.
The increased frequency of infectious animal illnesses is predicted to further fuel the demand for veterinary diagnostics. Additionally, improvements in diagnostics and an increasing adoption of novel procedures in the majority of laboratories are fueling market expansion. For instance, FORCE Technology established AeroCollect A/S in August 2021 as a new business.
The prevalence of pet insurance in North America has increased the likelihood that owners would subject their animals to diagnostic testing. Similar to how more diagnostic tests stop illnesses from spreading, the growth in zoonotic diseases is one of the main reasons for doing so. According to a research document by the World Wildlife Fund that was published in August 2020, zoonoses account for 60.3% of all newly developing illnesses.

Over the past few years, there has been a steady rise in the adoption of pets. For instance, according to the American Pet Products Association, the number of cats, dogs, and horses adopted countrywide increased from 172.5 million in 2011–2012 to 191.5 million in 2017–2018. (APPA). Numerous European nations have supportive regulations for companion animals. A few notable examples include the Commission Laws of the French National Assembly from 2014, the Civil Code of the Czech Republic from 2012, the Animal Welfare Act of the United Kingdom from 2006, the Austrian Constitution from 2004, the German Constitution from 2002, and the Swiss Law from October 4, 2002.
However, the adoption of point-of-care diagnostic devices among healthcare professionals is anticipated to be constrained by several reasons, such as low sensitivity of the results that might provide false positive or incorrectly negative results. The potential for animal neglect and the shortage of qualified specialists to analyze the gathered clinical data are constraints limiting the expansion of the veterinary infectious disease diagnostics market size.
Key Takeaways:
During the anticipated period, the United States is anticipated to lead the global veterinary infectious disease diagnostics market. In the United States, veterinary diagnostics are meant to assist veterinarians utilize medicines wisely, while also developing methods to combat animal diseases and zoonoses.
Japan is predicted to dominate the Asia Pacific veterinary infectious diseases diagnostics market throughout the forecast period. In order to improve animal health, major firms in Japan are offering diagnostic services using modern technology to identify novel ailments, particularly exotic diseases. In response to requests from the national and local governments of Japan, this is carried out.
Owing to its increasing sales and the rising occurrence of animal illnesses, the "immunodiagnostics" technology type is expected to hold the greatest revenue through the forecast period.
As pet popularity increases and pet insurance becomes more widely used, the "companion animal” animal type, and is the most creative segment for key companies, accounting for a sizable portion.
Competitive Landscape:
The global Veterinary Pathogen Detection Market share is fragmented as a result of both domestic and international competitors. Hey. I saw your comment about Cornelia Street possibly being Elizabeth street. Do you have a full more detailed song analysis of it being about time spent at Karlie’s place and not about time spent in the apartment Taylor rented?
I don’t have any evidence of it, it’s just purely speculation. But, there are a couple reasons why I say it’s a fun, creative possibility it’s written about (1)spending time at Karlie’s apartment on Elizabeth street in early 2014(January-March), as opposed to (2)the time at Cornelia St. (May/June 2016-early 2017(so about 6 months to one single year))
So let’s look at the first hypothetical scenario: (1) spending time at Karlie’s apartment on Elizabeth street in early 2014(January-March)
A) the simplest reason that it started out as just a fun, comical thought was “they have the same syllables!🤪” but then I was like “wait a minute...”
B) at the end of Cornelia St. there’s sounds of a storm...which could be the sound of the “perfect storm” of Clean.
C) In “...Ready for It” it talks about “let the games begin”...and in Cornelia St. it says “back when we were card sharks playing games, I thought you were leading me on.”
i. This also makes me believe RFI is also written early on. I do believe it’s a song of duality and sarcasm, as others have also speculated. The verses being her bombastic media alter ego and the chorus being her real self. AND, in the RFI chorus the original lyrics were “in the middle of the night in my dreams, that’s when I get to be with you; you’re so sweet.” —-> wildest dreams is all about dreaming of being with someone, not to mention the liner note HE ONLY SAW HER IN HIS DREAMS, so is “Sometimes I wonder when you sleep Are you ever dreaming of me?” in Delicate, which leads me to believe all 4 songs (Delicate, Wildest Dreams, ...Ready For It, and Cornelia St.) refer to the dreams about the NEW relationship. (“Every night with us is like a dream” in New Romantics also seems like a duality sarcasm song)
ii. Speaking of “NEW”!!... “Sacred new beginnings”
D.) Lyric analysis:
- “We were in the backseat Drunk on something stronger than the drinks in the bar.” Could this be the same bar in Delicate? “Dive bar on the east side where you at?”
- "I rent a place on Cornelia Street" I say casually in the car. Now I know this song in general is in first person but it could be written from Karlie’s perspective. I think Welcome To New York is written from Karlie’s perspective(“you” being Taylor and “me” being Karlie), and I think the same goes for This Is What You Came For(“she” being Taylor). I have no reason to believe the “I” in Cornelia St. isn’t Taylor...but I also have no reason to believe it isn’t Karlie.
- “We were a fresh page on the desk” resonates again like “sacred NEW beginnings.” Like a new relationship, also “page” is referenced again in NYD
- To me, “Filling in the blanks as we go” has the same echo as “we can’t make any promises now can we babe?”(Delicate) and “don’t read the last page”(New Year’s Day)—-Sidenote: I also think NYD is talking About the rebirth that resulted from “Clean”
- “As if the street lights pointed in an arrowhead leading us home.” This line is recognising the place in the song(wether it be Karlie’s apartment on elizabeth st. Or the place on Cornelia st.) as a place they both recognise as home. “Home” is also regurgitated in I Think He Knows: “I think he knows When we get all alone I’ll make myself at home And he'll want me to stay.” —— ITHK is also a song I perceive to be written early in their relationship, after Wildest Dreams. Where it’s still delicate but Taylor thinks Karlie knows Taylor is invested. “we can follow the sparks I’ll drive. so where we gonna go?” Sparks indicate newness, and I think it’s them planning Big Sur, especially since Taylor drove
- “I get mystified by how this city screams your name”, now, Karlie, as we all know, is allll over NYC career wise and billboard wise lol and, maybe the wonderful enchantment and awe of it never ends and is always amazing...but it could also be the beginning of them knowing each other, finding out this new person you’re into IS all over NYC, it IS mystifying
- “I'm so terrified of if you ever walk away.” The “walking away” is expected when they meet, in Wildest Dreams...but I think this line signifies a turning point for their commitment being more substantial. Saying the possibility of Karlie walking away is possible but terrifying
- “Windows swung right open, autumn air.” Now this fits with the 2016 timeline, and it could very well be true...or it could be an edit to make it fit more with the Joe timeline. If she were really talking about Elizabeth street, it would’ve been during winter...which, is when jackets are worn lol “Jacket 'round my shoulders is yours”
- “We bless the rains on Cornelia Street.” This makes me think of Spring time(April showers bring May flowers)...but neither 2016 or 2014 shows Spring being a season when they lived on either street. So maybe rain is metaphorical in this sense. I’m not sure how though
- “Back when we were card sharks playing games, I thought you were leading me on.” Assuming this was written about early 2014, “games” is reiterated in multiple songs, as I said before. “Baby let the games begin”(RFI), “cat and mouse for a month or two or three”(paper rings) “I’m about to play my ace”(New Romantics).
- “I packed my bags, left Cornelia Street Before you even knew I was gone.” Taylor spends time with Karlie from potentially as early as December/early January 2014 until presumably ~Jan. 27-~Feb 1st, 2014 when she returns back to the Red tour in London.
- “But then you called, showed your hand. I turned around before I hit the tunnel; Sat on the roof, you and I.” They confessed feelings and sat on Taylor’s roof together, which is reiterated in King of My Heart: “is this the end of all the endings?...all these nights we’re spending up on the roof...” Then Taylor goes back on tour, and since she’s happily in a new relationship(or stabilism to say the least), she probably pens “I Forgot that You Existed” and “Clean” about being in London on the Red tour from ~Jan. 28- ~Feb. 9, 2014 at the same time as Dianna and she didn’t even think of her.
- “You hold my hand on the street, Walk me back to that apartment. Years ago, we were just inside”- now assuming this is written in 2014 about 2014 it’d be “months” ago...and if it were written 2018 about early 2014 it’d be “years ago”
- “Sacred new beginnings That became my religion.” I think this is echoed again in Don’t Blame Me, which I think in part is about the trip to Big Sur, and about getting a new publicist.
- “I rent a place on Cornelia st. I say casually in the car.” Honestly I have no idea why the song opens AND closes with this sentence. Is the opener past tense and the closing line present tense? Is the opening line supposed to be Elizabeth at and the closing line Cornelia?? I dont know lol
NOW, let’s look at the second hypothetical scenario and say this song was (2) written in 2018 about May/June 2016-early 2017(so anywhere from about 6 months to one single year))
A) at the end of Cornelia St. there’s sounds of a storm...which could be the sound of “the storm that’s coming” in Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince
B) Lyric analysis:
- “I rent a place on Cornelia Street" I say casually in the car. I dont know why this would be said casually as if to seem cool if they were dating for two years at this point, unless it’s casually in an expected sense
- “We were a fresh page on the desk Filling in the blanks as we go.” So renting Cornelia street happened right after Tayvin ended and right as Hiddleswift started(knowing what that outcome was going to be, and knowing Joe was the ultimate long term goal from a PR perspective) so they had everything mapped out, a fresh page (“paper thin plans”(DBATC))
- “I get mystified by how this city screams your name” like I said earlier, maybe the amazement never ends or gets old
- “I'm so terrified of if you ever walk away” after so much time spent together like two years it would be terrifying if this significant person walked away
- “Windows swung right open, autumn air” this does follow the timeline of 2016
- “We bless the rains on Cornelia Street” I still think this is metaphorical because spring of 2016 also isn’t a time when they lived at Cornelia st.
- “Back when we were card sharks, playing games I thought you were leading me on” probably reminiscing on the games being played in the beginning of 2014 two years ago
- “I packed my bags, left Cornelia Street Before you even knew I was gone” i dont know why you wouldn’t tell your long term partner of two years you’re leaving the place or why they wouldn’t know, but the rental of Cornelia st ended in early 2017. Maybe it was to avoid the paps and press
- “But then you called, showed your hand I turned around before I hit the tunnel Sat on the roof, you and I.” I dont know why you wouldn’t know the hand of someone you’ve been seriously dating for two years...
- “You hold my hand on the street Walk me back to that apartment.” Taylor and Karlie didn’t have much, if any, PDA in 2018 so I’m not sure what it’s referring to here
- “Years ago we were just inside.” So heres where it makes me thing it was written about 2014. Even if this were written in 2018 about 2016 it would baaarely qualify for “years ago”, especially since moving out was early 2017
- “‘I rent a place on Cornelia st. I say casually in the car’” I still don’t know why this is repeated at the end

This was bound to happen : I’m talking about immigration law
@ghostplantss i don't know v much about french immigration law would you tell me about it? i'm v curious?
Oh wow. First tea, and now this ? Either you are my secret Santa, or my enabler.
So let me tell you about the passion of my life, Immigration and refugee law, and the fuckery this country has made of it.
The way a city, community, country treats the “other” is one of the oldest legal questions in the History of Humanity. From Antique Greek cities to the Jus Gentium of the Roman Empire, laws concerning foreigners might be the first form of international law known to man. In many ways, it’s by acknowledging the existence of “others”, by giving and restricting their rights, that a social group both truly asserts itself as a “political community”, yet acknowledges the transcending quality of “humanity” of the outsider.
Nowadays, this question is as politically charged as ever : the way a country regards foreigners, welcomes them, rejects them, is one of the most interesting ways you can define the country, one of the ways the country sees itself. By the way we treat the one who is not “us”, we highlight which rights we consider to be inherent to humanity in and of itself, as well as which ones we consider intrinsically rooted in our identity as “citizen”.
And all this proud History, all this contemporary tension, makes Immigration law fascinating to FUCKING NO ONE.
Look, one thing you have to know about lawyers is how much they love intellectual wankery. A nicer way to put it would be to say lawyers love systems. And theory. And generalisation. And categorizing. They like to look at a set of rules and see a pattern, a logic, a paradigm. They like to be able to neatly present it in two titles, each divided in two subtitles, each divided in two sections, and repeat that until they run out of microsoft font points.
And Immigration law... It’s not that. It’s not that at all. It’s the opposite of that. It’s a law that’s almost entirely dictated by conjoncture, by what a government needs it to say, by whichever concept they’re going to twist then to suit their needs. Whatever few theoritical concepts Immigration law might have been based on have been destroyed by years of either haphazardous or plainly malignant reforms, often both.
And not only does that mean that this at this point is an intensely, punitively complex law, it has also become - if it hasn’t always been - illogical and incoherent. The only “logic” behind it anymore is how much it can be weaponized against its subjects - foreigners. Because that’s the only thing that politicians care about, and because lawyers and especially academics have pretty much given up on it, leaving the terrain free for the former. You have to realize, in terms of pure numbers, Immigration law is the most practiced law in the country. It represents almost a third of all disputes. Yet it is taught in NO university in France. Not a single one. There are no courses, no grad school, no thesis program about immigration law in all of France. There is no money in Immigration law : almost all involved subjects are destitute. There is no intellectual curiosity, because the discipline, from a theoretical point of view, is pretty uninteresting. There isn’t even public interest, because deceptively, the general public hears so much about immigration from either ignorant or ill-intentioned people, that getting through the complexity of the topic is immensely complicated and unrewarding.
Lawyers, for the most part, have deserted the topic for selfish reasons, despite the fact that this is perhaps where they were most needed to make sure fundamental rules were enforced, that politics didn’t come in the way of good justice. They abandoned the most vulnerable subjects of law to the whims of lawmakers and political interests. That’s unforgiveable.
So as a result, Immigration law today mostly resembles a cat-and-mouse game where the law sets up as many traps as possible for the immigrant to fall into, with dozens of obstacles to navigate to finally, finally be able to legally settle in a country you might be have been living in for several decades. There are specific stay rules for retirees. That’s a thing. Every rule is meant to exclude as many people as possible. As a result, immigrants must get increasingly creative or even downright shifty in order to qualify for a stay. And in turn, public opinion will yell and say they are manipulating the system - well, duh. We’ve made a system in which it’s impossible to win fair and square and then we criticize immigrants for trying to game it.
Let’s have just one example : demands of admission because of sickness. French law categorizes different reasons for an immigrant to be admitted to live on french soil for a little while : study, work, family matters, and health. France has a very good health system compared to the worldwide standard, so many people come here to receive treatment they might not be able to benefit from in their country of origin for various reasons. Some people already don’t think that’s a reason for welcoming them, but fuck those people. Anyway, there are many, many people who will ask for permission to stay on the grounds of an “invisible” illness : depression, PTSD, personality disorder... all of which are very difficult to prove. Before 2017, the prefect had to decide based on the opinion of a doctor from the regional authority after they’d met with the author of the request. But the administration quickly realized that doctors tend to have that pesky thing called deontology or even - perish the thought ! - empathy. So there was a reform, and now the way it works is the ill immigrant goes to a doctor who writes a report, then mails it to the person’s lawyer, who then mails it to a doctor that will do a second report based on that report, and will send that second report to a group of 3 doctors who, on the sole basis of that document, will advise the prefect on whether or not the person is ill, and whether or not they could have access to treatment in their country. And when I say advise, I mean they mail a form with boxes checked. That’s it. No text. So we have a prefect, who’s not a doctor, making a decision about the health situation of a person based on a box-based form filled by doctors who have never met the person, who themselves are judging based on the report of another doctor who has no met the person either, this last doctor writing based on the report of another doctor who might have met the person once. And all of this can take up to a year. That’s time during which the immigrant cannot work, or receive benefits. And then, if the prefect decides against letting the immigrant stay, then they have only 2 months to challenge that decision, otherwise after those 2 months have passed, they can be arrested, incarcerated and deported at any time.
So given all that, is it any wonder that immigrants tend to “discover” illness after illness and constantly ask for stays based on that ? This system is so random and unfair, that all you can really do is try and try again hoping something will eventually stick. So now you have people complaining that immigrants are faking mental illness in mass, causing prejudice to the “real” mentally ill immigrants. And yes, that’s the effect. But make no mistake : the cause is how difficult it is for an immigrant to have their illness acknowledged when it’s not something “extreme” enough to have you cross the border on a gurney. Because it’s not enough to google “availability of x medication in x country” to make sure the person can actually access treatment in their country of origin.
So that’s the hypocrisy infusing (haha, tea joke) the whole system. And on top of that, the procedure is getting more complicated with every reform : miss one deadline, fill out one form wrong, and you’re out. And please remember we’re dealing with people who for the vast majority do not speak french (the ONLY language allowed in administrative matters according to the Constitution) and know nothing of our administrative system. It’s up to the person’s lawyer to basically map out the life of each of their client. And because there is no money in immigration law - you only get paid in judicial aid from the state - there aren’t many immigration lawyers. You have to do this out of conviction, cuz you’re certainly not doing it for the money or career opportunities. In the practice I interned at last year, each lawyer would at all times manage on average 50 to 80 active cases. And let’s be clear, a lot of them are assholes, because lawyers in general tend to be assholes. But the work they do in downright heroic.
So that’s where I come in to fix it all, right ? Yeah, no. This entire system is fucked, and given what the world looks like right now, it might be for a while. I’m under no delusion that I can do anything to change that. My goal is to help the way I can : I want to become an administrative judge, the ones who are in charge of examining administrative decisions regarding immigrants. This type of challenge represents roughly 50% of the activity of any administrative tribunal : every chamber, no matter their specialty, has to do a little of it, otherwise the system is so backed up it would collapse. Some of those judges do amazing work, and are some of the most compassionate people I’ve ever met. Some of them are not. Most of them are plain bored by this type of claim, because they’re repetitive, not really technical from a legal standpoint and always depressing. And a handful of them have ties to the far-right and are there just to expel as many immigrants as possible. So yeah, if all goes well I’ll be a judge in a few years, and I’ll be one of the only ones who came to the job because of immigration law, not in spite of it. It’s not bragging on my part, it’s just a sad fact. Judges at the tribunal where I’ve worked had a schedule for who was supposed to be in charge of new immigration claims arriving, and some judges would hide from court reporters in order not to get attributed cases that arrived right before their shift was over. So yeah, if I can be a small drop in the bucket and be someone who actually looks at these cases with the explicit intent of finding a reason to approve the claim, that’ll be good enough for me. Because Immigration law, or at least what we’ve made of it, might not be “interesting” but it’s goddamn important, and people should pay attention to it.

2019
The last day of 2019 was also the day I fainted for the first time--a fitting metaphor for the year.
2019 was overall very emotionally taxing. This year was emotionally defined by falling intensely, deeply in love with someone (who is a very private person so I will try to be vague to respect that) and being in a lot of pain because of situations mostly outside of our control. There were a lot of intensely joyous moments, and a lot of intensely sad ones. Throughout it all I wish I had communicated better. I also made some bad decisions with another person I really loved and cared about that resulted in us growing apart. Do I think I grew from the experiences? For sure. Do I wish I could have come upon these realizations through a different course of action? Also yes. Am I fully healed from the experiences? Not really, but I've been getting better.
2019 was also very bad in terms of research. It was the 2nd year of my PhD. After I submitted my rotation project I basically felt stuck in the swamp of my advisors rejecting new project ideas for like literally half a year. This, combined with my high emotional volatility (partially due to starting birth control), made me really sad, unmotivated, and susceptible to self-blame. I definitely had high expectations for myself and became frustrated at my lack of progress and felt a lot of pressure from myself to get my shit together. I also felt incredibly bad after most advisor meetings and not supported by one of them to the point where I had to have a conversation with him about the lack of support (which was very scary)! Things started picking up, though, near the end of the year. I published a paper in collaboration with a former post-doc/now professor elsewhere whom I learned a lot from, and started finally building out another system. I also started mentoring an undergrad who at some point told me I helped him feel like he had something important to say and belong at Stanford for the first time and those words meant a lot to me. I think I'm continuing to refine what I value as research contributions and increasingly think about what it means to build systems that aren't used outside of the lab to satisfy the annual conference publishing cycle. I'm also starting to feel the pressure of doing work that follows a narrative rather than random projects that interest me.
Oh, I guess in terms of "program requirements," I did finish taking required classes, passed qualifying exams, and got a master's degree. But honestly those weren't hard at all nor do I think are externally valued in the larger research community, so I don't really celebrate them as accomplishments beyond surface level.
In 2019 I saw two different therapists. The first one was awful, I think directly influenced some of my bad decisions, and also didn't respect my gender identity??? The second one is a lot better and I'm grateful to see her, even if 90% of our sessions are just talking about my relationship (romantic/advisor) issues, which is something I want to move away from in the future. But I also feel incredibly privileged when relationship issues are the primary stressors in my life--I am grateful I feel equipped to handle other crap, like deadlines, and don't have to worry about my own health.
Those were the main things that have colored this year. We'll now move into the section of this post where I go through my photos to jog my memory of other events.
New years started a tradition of getting dim sum with Jasper, Matthew, and Michelle dear to my heart. My high school friend was also visiting and we all attended a really awesome new year's eve party. I was also going on a lot of dates and having a lot of good sex, which made me really happy, and at the same time crying all the time at work. In February I received probably the best gift anyone has ever given me and saw Panic! at the Disco, which I said in an end of the year group meeting was a good memory of my year (it was, to relive my scene days!). In March I roadtripped both to Marin (which I had never to been before, despite all my years in the bay) and LA for Wondercon; it was nice to both see high school friends and go on a trip with the boo. In April I went on a hike with my office which was probably the start of us all becoming closer (we are the social office in the wing now, which I take pride in! Also we draw a lot of Pokemon which warms my heart). In May I went to CHI in Glasgow and then to Paris afterward, and the entire experience was very weird and bad and also too many flights were canceled and/or missed and I vowed to not return to Europe for a while, but man do I love the noodles at Trois Fois plus de Piment. In June we hosted a double apartment party with my downstairs neighbors (side note: I am really appreciative of the place I live in, for the community, convenience, and large-ass space and will be really sad to be kicked out fall 2020) and I started a friendship important to me. I cat-sat for my advisor (the one who doesn't make me feel bad) twice. I went to Redwood State Park with my family and hosted a summer solstice celebration. Over the summer a friend I met in Paris back in 2017 moved in with me. I had a much needed escape from the bay to Seattle where I was reminded how abundant the world can be. I also went to Tahoe to celebrate my parents' anniversary, and really liked stumbling upon a smaller lake with a cheap boat rental. Then I became FOMO about the highly competitive Bay Area camping and did a last minute walk-in at Redwood Basin in Santa Cruz, which made me realize that I don't actually love camping (but was nice nonetheless). I ate an expensive meal at Commonwealth before they closed. For my birthday we made a friendship quilt and I served my favorite dish of cumin lamb but it was also 90 degrees in my apartment (I felt really bad and bought two fans afterwards). I started buying many cartoon frog plush after being gifted a $3.99 on sale Safeway frog (called Baby!). I went on Tinder dates (one of which was at a quaker yard sale marketed as Harvest Festival where I got a 1970s Kermit puppet for like $2) that largely went nowhere. My high school friend visited and we were both sad about break ups. I did Inktober before I went to New Orleans for a conference on Bourbon St where everything felt like it was coated in a sticky film of alcohol. I almost missed my flight home because I fell asleep in a sculpture garden but I had the most amazing Uber driver who snaked his way through traffic (oh and the flight was delayed by like 3 hours). I went to kind of embarrassing haunted houses and pumpkin patches over Halloween, but also had the most incredible bowl of ramen at Mensho. My whole office dressed up as Zootopia characters which warmed my furry heart. I spent like $120 on a Pokemon shirt. I started playing Arkham Horror and rekindled another friendship important to me. In November went on a road trip to Big Sur because again, I had to escape it all. For Christmas Eve dinner I roasted a duck for the first time (which was delicious). Shortly after I waited in line for 2 hours for a rollercoaster at Great America, which taught me the value of buying a fast pass because at this point in my life that money is worth it, and then waited 2 hours in line at the DMV to get a RealID (I had made an appointment, which was the fast pass).
Okay, now we move to the hobby section!
I got really into sewing in 2019, having received a sewing machine last Christmas. I made a Judy Hopps (which I wore to CrunchyRoll Expo) and Korok cosplay (Fanime), several unsuccessful garments, a crab bean bag, a dice bag, a fanny pack, and put hearts nipples on a jumpsuit.
Shows! I think I went to way fewer shows this year. The ones I can remember are Elephant Gym, Thom Yorke the night before I had an 8am flight, Carly Rae Jepsen over pride weekend (also, she is my #1 artist of the year, which makes a lot of sense given my emotional space), Mitski at Stern Grove, Capitol Hill Bloc Party (which was super lame, except for Lizzo, where I cried), and the National (which was a fucking surreal experience as they played on Stanford's campus, I was the only one within earshot of myself who knew the words to Crybaby Geeks, and then the white catalog moms came up to me after to thank me for singing the song).
I also started playing my own music! I started playing viola again for the first time in 7 years (lol) in both pop-up concerts with the Awesome Orchestra (one in Golden Gate Park, one at the Exploratorium) and a string quartet through my school. Sometimes I am filled with joy and delight. Other times interpersonal tensions run high and also I am very bad at being in tune. It's life.
Media! I really liked Mob Psycho 100 Season 2 and Beastars. I feel like those were the only notable anime I watched this year? I saw the Farewell three times--first in Seattle where I sobbed for like 1 hour after the movie, the second time with my parents, and the third where Awkwafina was present for a Q&A. I thought Parasite was incredible and Promare was OK. I have spent an unfortunately large amount of my time playing Pokemon Masters. I finally beat BOTW and completed my Pokedex in Shield like 2 weeks after getting the game.
Resolutions! In my draft of my 2018 end of year post (which I never polished and posted, sorry), I said my resolutions were 1. come out to my parents 2. draw enough to table at an anime con 3. be disciplined about paper reading and have a doc. I did none of these things!!! However, for 1, I feel like I am well equipped to have this conversation but am waiting for my sibling to do it first out of respect. 2 was just bad. I barely drew this year except for gifts. 3 was okay--I did have a large doc in the beginning of the year when I was looking for ideas, but as time went on I abandoned it (I also stopped reading papers, which I don't think you're supposed to do as a grad student...)
My resolutions this year are phrased as intentions (-(c) Matthew). They span several categories. Relationships: I want to open myself to and actively seek experiences of love, because I miss that. That being said, I will only date someone if 1. they have their life together 2. they love themselves and 3. they challenge me to grow. (I do think you can experience love without dating; the thing I'm after is love in an expansive sense.) Work: I want to do enough work so I don't feel guilty about not doing enough work, and also not berate myself for taking a long time to do things. Hobbies: I want to sew at least one thing a month. Chinese: I want to improve my Chinese, especially pronunciation.
Having written this 20 days into 2020, it's not been so bad so far. But I was also really happy in the beginning of 2019. Here's to no global maxima, a monotonically increasing year!

Note
Guys! Since I am still shiny and new (and think you're all the bees knees just FYI), and just reading my way through random things eclectically here and there - how about a post with each of the librarians tip top recs for a one shot and a multi-chap? One of each, each?
Tumblr media
Bees Knees
Well, @viikirks, we think you’re the cat’s pyjamas for this ask! Even if it pains us all to narrow down our recommendations.
@firesign23:  For a multichapter fic, my first thought as @edeainfj‘s The Fixed Foot (2016) despite the fact it’s not a particularly long multichapter fic. I adore all of her fics–she’s one of those “Drop everything to read immediately” authors for me–and I could fill a post with just recs of her fics, but The Fixed Foot is definitely amongst my favourites. It explores the challenges and negotiations Phryne and Jack would find in an open relationship while keeping that underlying respect and love between them at the forefront. It’s challenging and beautiful and I adore it. As a bonus, the comments on the fic add a whole other dimension of discussion to it.
And after naming a short multichapter, I thought it might be nice to give a shoutout to a longer oneshot. Sing a Song of Sixpence (2016) was written for Yuletide 2016, which is one of the largest and longest running cross-fandom fic exchanges (it began in 2003!). 2016 was the last year MFMM qualified for their “small fandom” criteria. What’s interesting here is that we do not have an author to credit, as the writer made use of AO3′s orphaning option. Set three weeks after the events of 3x08, Phryne has returned to Melbourne and is immediately called in to investigate the murder of Rex Morgan, one of Melbourne’s best accountants and loathed by many; the resulting investigation uncovers long-held family secrets, more deaths, and just the right amount of flirting.
@kanste:  We are lucky to have such a lovely collection of fics – sad ones, funny ones, romantic ones and sexy ones – you name it and we probably have it.  Like @whopooh I have had a very hard time to choose just one of each, unlike her I couldn’t make it. So I decided to give you two of each.
For my one shot I give you a funny one and a sad one. Counterfactual  (2015) by @promisesarepiecrust is the fic I always choose when I’m in need of a little heartbreak or a good cry.  It deals with the aftermath of a one-night stand. There is one specific picture PromisesArePieCrust has created, that will forever stay with me.  Whump, whump (2014) by @aljwritesphryne is the one fic that always cheers me up. It has Dottie, a flustered Hugh and a hint of Phrack.
My first multi chapter fic is on the shorter side with only four chapters but it has so much going on: beautiful clothes, Phrack having a sexy dinner and dessert. A More Lethal Dress (2016) by @omgimsarahtoo. My second one is a Modern AU story that is the beginning of the YACI universe. You Are Cordially Invited….. (2015) by @aljwritesphryne. Jack is a detective, Phryne a private eye with a huge social media following, throw in a royal wedding and you have a good read.
@olderbynow: First off, if there are no specific rules laid out, there’s no cheating. I just want to put that out there. And then I want to show you something amazing. It’s this multichapter fic by RakishAngle: Messengers and Forfeits (2015), which is ten chapters of delicious Phrack written in that kind of style that I want to be when I grow up. It is wonderful, okay. It’s also a sequel, and you obviously have to read the first one as well. (See what I did there, Chidi @whopooh? I didn’t have to choose. Muahahaha.)
As my standalone fic I just have to push And I Do Lift My Aching Arms to You (2017) by @gaslightgallows. It’s got fake-out make-out, Archie, a Gilbert & Sullivan reference, smut that manages to be both hot and hilarious, which is an A++ smut combo. And it has one of my favourite lines written in a fic ever. If when you read the fic, I’m 100% sure you’ll be able to guess which one.
@ollyjayonline: As I lack the concentration to read a long fic my multi-chapter is a bit on the short side but size, as we know, is no guide to quality and at just over 10,000 words and a mere two chapters @ladyroxie‘s Delight Out of Loosened Soil (2016) is one of my favourites. (And because my ability to follow rules rivals my ability to concentrate I’m also going to mention @olderbynow‘s Tales of a Wayside Romance 1930 (2017) which remains the best fic I’ve never read.) For my one shot I love the passionate abandon of Saudade (2017) by @kidnthehall.
@solitarycyclistadventures: Ooh, this is a hard question. How can I choose?! There are so many writers worth checking out!! Here are some fics that come to mind first: The Fixed Foot – which has already been recommended by Firesign so doesn’t count. @promisesarepiecrust’s Phracking Fridays – a multi-chapter with very short but very sweet chapters. Some of them just knock me out. For one shot, read @ollyjayonline’s The Hunt – I want to recommend all of ollyjayonline’s fics, and this is her first one shot, although I suppose I’m cheating because it’s part of a multi-chapter story. :D Bonus multi-chapter fic: @flashofthefuse‘s modern AU, Still Holding My Heart.
@whopooh: I know wejoke about this a lot, but that is because it’s true – I am the Chidi in thisgroup, and asking me to choose just one thing is a little bit like sending meto the so called Good Place to torture me. I struggle with this, BUT – I’ll justdive in and give you two fics I have come back to several times and that hasmeant a lot to me!
My multi-chapter one is a fic that draws me into it and teases me because it doesn’t give away much of the characters’ inner emotions. This is @promisesarepiecrust’s A whole world in here (8 chapters, 2016). It is written like a play, which means we get the lines and a few stage directions, but basically we are left to our own devices about their inner turmoil, and for me, that becomes really intense. It also forces me to read slowly. The fic is focused on Phryne’s and Jack’s relationship and things that threaten to hinder it, and it has some lovely Mac and also an OC I really appreciate. Interestingly, since the form is so special, the resolution – all that pent up desire and frustration going off in a bang – is told in a prose form.
For a one-shot, I’ll say @jeneenp/Collingwoodgirl’s The Night Within Us (2016) which is so concentratedly sensual in its way of using one of theclassic tropes, to be locked into a small place together, and the heat in this is to me scorching. Also, since @ollyjayonline openedthe floodgate to give a bonus rec, I will do that too, and say that another ofmy favourite locked-in-together is Lefaym, Locked rooms (2014) and its delicious humour.

2019 Junior World Championships Preview
Thirty-one dance teams take on Zagreb, Croatia for the last major junior event of the 2018/2019 season, because wow does time fly. Check below for our preview of some of the top contenders you won’t want to miss!
Alicia FABBRI / Paul AYER Canada Age: 16/20 Started Skating Together: 2018 Coach: Julien Lalonde Season's Best: 135.66 Rhythm Dance: A Evaristo Carriego Free Dance: Quand on na que l'amour(2:09:00 on the video)
Ice dance tends to favor lengthier partnerships, but Fabbri/Ayer have been forced to do a speed run of their junior career, as he ages them out after this. They suffered serious growing pains in the fall, but hit their stride starting with Skate Canada Challenge, and grabbed the silver at Nationals ahead of some heavy competition in order to win a berth here. Alicia Fabbri has been around and a favourite of ours for the past two seasons with former partner Claudio Pietrantonio, but this will be the first trip to Junior Worlds for either. Watching them skate together, it's clear why they teamed up despite the inconveniences-- they have great depth of edge, power, and matching glide, and as they’ve gotten used to competing together they give the impression of a more established team. The ideal partnership is the one that works, and as they've settled into each other, it's clear that this works. Alicia has always been such a mature, nuanced performer and Paul is a very strong lead that has helped them come together so quickly. They're kind of wildcards-- they had a very messy fall season that made us increasingly nervous, and it's hard to be sure just how a clean, strong Fabbri/Ayer will stack up in this crowd. Rather than the actual results, the important part is probably that they show up with two strong, clean skates with good levels and high performance quality to best showcase their abilities and begin their transition to seniors with a positive experience.
Marjorie LAJOIE / Zachary LAGHA Canada Age: 18/19 Started Skating Together: 2011 Coach: Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenauer, Pascal Denis Season's Best: 166.52 Rhythm Dance: Otros Aires Free Dance: Warsaw Concerto
One of the major medal contenders here, the three time Canadian Junior National Champions will be looking for redemption after a history of close calls. 4th at Junior Worlds last year, and 4th again at JGPF in December, Lajoie/Lagha will want to close out their junior career with a medal, possibly even the gold. They're one of the veterans of the field, with this being their fourth trip to Junior Worlds, and they're ready to move on to the senior ranks even though they have another year of eligibility left. They’ve really stepped up recently showing more maturity in their skating and finding ways to connect with each other and the audience. They have a really sharp midline step sequence in their rhythm dance this year, and their free dance opens with an undeniably stunning stationary lift. If they skate the way they can at their best, such as at JGP Richmond in the fall, it will be difficult for their rivals to keep them off the podium.
Maria KAZAKOVA/Georgy REVIYA Georgia Age: 17/19 Started Skating Together: 2017 Coach: Denis Samokhin Season's Best: 164.65 Rhythm Dance: Building the Bullet Free Dance: Carmina Burana
Kazakova/Reviya made their Junior World debut last season where they cracked the top 10, and have continued to make a statement this year winning the first JGP medals in ice dance for Georgia as well as qualifying for the JGPF in their first JGP season together. These two have risen fast through the ranks and have an outside shot at a medal here. They had a somewhat disappointing experience at JGPF, tripping in the pattern during the rhythm dance and placing last in both segments, but that just means the pressure is off here. They have no domestic competition to worry about, they're not aging out, and the spotlight is off them despite having posted some very competitive scores at points in the season. This makes them perfect dark horse material if any of the bigger favorites screw up. All they need to worry about is themselves. They've got a lot going for them, speed and power, and they're really getting to be able to skate up to the drama of Carmina Burana, which is no small feat. They have a really great lift in the free dance as well, and they're generally committed performers. Even if they don't climb on the podium this year, they can set themselves up as big contenders for next season. As long as they remember that they have nothing to lose and everything to gain, Kazakova/Reviya can make quite a splash in their second appearance at Junior Worlds.
Elizaveta KHUDAIBERDIEVA / Nikita NAZAROV Russia Age: 16/20 Started Skating Together: 2016 Coach: Denis Samokhin Season's Best: 164.54 Rhythm Dance: Tango Amore Free Dance: Human/Nemesis
Reigning JGPF and Russian junior national bronze medalists, Khudaiberdieva/Nazarov are one of the teams making their Junior Worlds debut who are also aging out of juniors after this season. They definitely have a chance to keep up their medal streak here, and potentially more than just bronze. They're a team that knows their strengths and use them to full effect-- the dramatic, eye catching opening to their tango which makes full use of her long lines and flexibility has stuck with us all season. They've tinkered with their angsty, modern free dance, a great fit for their performance style, over the season though that great stationary lift has stuck around. They’ve struggled with consistency issues and giving up big points on fluke errors in the past, but have proven themselves to be formidable competitors in their third season skating together.
They defeated rivals Lajoie/Lagha on their home ice, which was no small feat particularly considering Khudaiberdieva/Nazarov qualified to the JGPF without having to face off against any major rivals. But they delivered under pressure and will at minimum be looking to put out two strong performances and ideally take home one more junior medal., but even so it was by a hair and they'll need to be at their best to medal again. Despite winning both of their JGPs, they're not favored to take the top spot, which may be all the better for them. If they can clean up their little errors and skate with all the speed and emotion they're capable of while getting good levels, they have a great shot at earning a medal.
Sofia SHEVCHENKO / Igor EREMENKO Russia Age: 17/21 Started Skating Together: 2014 Coach: Irina Zhuk and Alexander Svinin Season's Best: 170.66 Rhythm Dance: La Cumparsita Free Dance: Witchdoctor/Lijo
In their fourth and final junior season, Shevchenko/Eremenko are aiming to finish out their junior career on top of the podium before making the jump to the crowded senior ranks. They've never missed a JGP medal in their four seasons on the circuit, but have always been overlooked in favor of their rivals until this season, indeed, until the JGPF where they were the surprise winners by the slimmest margin possible. They followed that up with a more decisive victory at Russian Junior Nationals, winning by around four points. In our opinion their tango is one of the best this season at any level, they have such an instinctive feel for it and wonderful choreographic touches as well. Her spin exit out of their twizzles and their lift perfectly timed to the musical accents and styled for the tango are highlights. Their free dance is innovative and quirky with elements perfectly suited to the music and a standout choreo character step sequence. Their last Junior Worlds may only be their second appearance at the event, but they’ve set themselves up quite well this season to wind up in one of the top spots.
Arina USHAKOVA / Maxim NEKRASOV Russia Age: 16/18 Started Skating Together: 2015 Coach: Alexei Gorshkov Season's Best: 172.81 Rhythm Dance: Libertango/Flamenco Free Dance: Black Cat, White Cat
The reigning Junior World Medalists, Ushakova/Nekrasov absolutely peaked at the right time last season and will be looking to do so again this year. After an impressive start to the season where they absolutely dominated both of their JGPs, they lost out on the JGPF title but a heartbreakingly close margin of 0.01 to domestic rivals Shevchenko/Eremenko. They skated well at Nationals but were unable to take the title there either. They still have the highest personal best of the teams here, earned with their unforgettable athletic, quirky style. Despite their undeniable talents like speed and power that would fit right in at the senior level, and a rare commitment to performing, they're a bit of an acquired taste. Their performance style and approach to their programs is uniquely them., which makes them stand out from the crowd even if it turns some people off.
It’s worth noting that last season they also lost to Shevchenko/Eremenko at both JGPF and Nationals before beating them to the podium at Junior Worlds. They’ve got up to two more seasons in juniors if they want it, but as they showed with their Junior Worlds bronze last year, there’s no time like the present to make a statement.
Caroline GREEN / Gordon GREEN United States Age: 15/17 Started Skating Together: 2009 Coach: Elena Novak and Alexei Kiliakov Season's Best: No ISU SB, 157.41 at Mentor Torun Cup Rhythm Dance: "Essa" by Ostra Aires Free Dance: The Devil Violinist
An impressive 6th in their Junior Worlds debut last season, the Greens’ fast rise through the junior ranks was interrupted when Caroline took ill and missed the fall season. She recovered and they bounced back in time to win Sectionals, Golden Spin, Torun Mentor Cup, and finally their first Junior National title, beating out heavy favorites Nguyen/Kolesnik. By the time January rolled around, you couldn't tell that they'd missed any time at all. They've always been fast and powerful for their ages, but a growth spurt over the past year has only accentuated that. They're especially strong in the rhythm dance, where their power, long lines, and flair are shown off to the greatest effect. Their presentation and projection isn't quite as developed and mature as some of the other teams, but they have great attack in their skating and performance. Definitely a team on the rise, and while this may be a pretty stacked event for the top spots, they shouldn’t be counted out.
Eliana GROPMAN / Ian SOMERVILLE United States Age: 18/18 Started Skating Together: 2009 Coach: Elena Novak and Alexei Kiliakov Season's Best: 148.51 Rhythm Dance: Nuevo Tango Free Dance: Mozart L'Opera Rock
The newly crowned US National bronze medalists will be making their Junior World debut (and are also somehow both adults now?) and looking to try to muscle their way through the tightly packed top ranks. Their JGP season was not without its struggles, but hopefully they can take some confidence from earning both their first JGP medal and their first top 3 finish at Nationals. These two have been skating together awhile and have such an instinctive feel for each other as well as a lovely glide and great edge quality. They need more power and amplitude in their skating to take it to the next level, but their flow across the ice is incredible, and their partnering is seamless and fluid. Their expression is top-notch, and their movements are always purposeful and placed. If they can hit their levels and present good programs, they could set new personal bests and even sneak ahead of some more decorated teams.
Avonley NGUYEN / Vadym KOLESNIK United States Age: 16/17 Started Skating Together: 2017 Coach: Igor Shpilband and Pasquale Carmerlengo Season's Best: 165.63 Rhythm Dance: Building the Bullet/Vuelvo Al Sur Free Dance: “Demons” by Imagine Dragons/Experience by Ludovico Einaudi
In their second season together, Nguyen/Kolesnik made a huge splash and became fan favorites as they qualified to their first JGPF. At their second JGP event, they even beat Shevchenko/Eremenko to take the gold, although they faltered a bit at JGPF, placing fifth. They had some stumbles in the rhythm dance at Nationals, causing them to lose the title, although they fought back and won the free. They're a quick, agile team with a lot of charisma and showmanship, and they're always a delight to watch. They pull difficult elements out of nothing with particularly impressive lifts fitting the music and character of their programs. Their size difference sometimes makes skating in hold a little awkward, and they're not quite generating the power of some of their competitors, but they have some of the best lifts out there as well as an innate sense of showmanship. They're young and only in their second season together and regardless of the outcome, this will be a great experience(no pun intended) for them, but they have a great shot at the podium if they clean up their tango.

2018: #5-MAD SCIENTISTS
Tumblr media
A common character type in horror films is the mad scientist. Mad scientists are the geniuses who create the problems the films are about. Mad scientists also appear in many novels and tv series. Mad scientists allow for easy Halloween costumes; all you need is some sort of lab coat. The mad scientist is a Jungian archetype, a familiar reoccurring character type. They usually hold some form of degree in biochemistry, medicine, or robotics so they qualify as being a scientist. They primary want to build, create things, or make scientific progress. Mad scientists often have wild frizzed out hair, wear white lab coats or protective gear, are eccentric, and old. They always have good intentions – advances in science or knowledge! They are convinced to the point of fanaticism that they are benefitting humanity. Sometimes their goals are narrow, to just help one person, such as a family member, often from an illness, resulting in terrible consequences. It is important to understand this distinction of mad scientists: they usually think they are working towards good. They always believe that the ends justify the means. They are cold people. Mad scientists have existed since there was science. They represent an insane misuse of the scientific method into creating terrible things.
A misuse of science and technology is an issue we are slowly drowning in. Global warming is the largest product of this misuse. Global warming exists because of a willful ignorance in harnessing natural energy. Of all of the possible energy sources, from the tides to wind and solar energy, focusing only on obtaining power from sources that produce toxins is crazy. Freud called that Thanatos, the death instinct. Real mad scientists are responsible for animal testing, the nuclear arms race, etc. Thomas Edison, sure made achievements with electricity, but why would he electrocute an elephant? The unconscious motivation of the mad scientist is Thanatos, or death and doom.
Previously I ogled over the 1974 Doctor Who seven episode story, Inferno (see 2018: #2-GUIDE TO DOCTOR WHO). The Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, is shot into a parallel world in which England was a totalitarian communist country. The Doctor deals with a Professor Stahlman who is managing the deepest drilling project ever. This deep drilling brings up a mysterious green ooze. The green ooze was extremely hot, turning people insane and devolving them into green werewolves. Professor Stahlman ignored all of that and continued working on his drilling project to discover a new energy source. He was “hellbent” on seeing his project succeed in penetrating the Earth’s inner crust at all costs, yet doing that would doom the world to a quick destruction as the uncapped power of the core of the planet was released. Mad scientists are insane because they are drawn to doom, death and destruction, likes moths to a flame.
Dr. Frankenstein from the original 1931 Frankenstein film is perhaps the most recognizable mad scientist. Dr. Victor Frankenstein was portrayed by Colin Clive including in the sequel, Bride of Frankenstein. Colin Clive may be the primary mad scientist, but he was not the first mad scientist to appear in film. Rudolph Klein-Rogge delivered to us the mad scientist of Rotwang in the masterpiece Metropolis from 1927. Claude Rains in 1933’s The Invisible Man sure seems mad! Bela Lugosi portrayed many mad scientists (see 2018: #1-GREAT HORROR FILM ACTORS). I particularly prefer his twelve-episode serial from 1939, The Phantom Creeps, in which Lugosi portrays the villain who constructs a ridiculous-looking metal golem with a fantastically fat head (see 2012: #3-GOLEMS). The most frightening mad scientist from early film sure seems to be Charles Laughton’s Dr. Moreau from 1932’s The Island of Lost Souls. Bela Lugosi also appeared in that film but as an experiment of the mad doctor. Dr. Jekyll is an excellent example of a mad scientist with a multiple personality problem. There are many film adaptations of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The original 1931 film with Fredric March is probably the best but I also like Dan Curtis’ 1968 production of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Jack Palance.
Mad scientists in horror fiction have a clearly specified niche they tend to be interested in. Sometimes they are mad doctors testing new surgeries, medications, or serums such as in 2007’s The Rage. Other times they are experimenting on living or dead people or upon animals as in 2006’s Black Sheep. If not messing about with animals or the dead, mad scientists start building things like robots and androids which may even end up destroying the entire universe as in the Lexx tv series. Other times mad scientists are building strange technologies and hyperspatial portals to other places or realms. Some mad scientists just want to break new barriers and travel somewhere forbidden as in the films From Beyond, Doom, or Event Horizon.
Mad scientists have appeared in many television series. Doctor Who was originally going to be about an old human mad scientist from the year 5,000 who built a time machine. Fringe was a tv series focusing upon one mad scientist chief character, Dr. Walter Bishop portrayed by John Noble. The enjoyable 1960’s The Avengers spy series often featured mad scientist villains (see 2017: #4-SPIES). Walter White from the popular Breaking Bad series was something of a mad scientist chemist. Quite a few superheroes are mad scientists or victims of mad science: Spider-Man, the Hulk, and the Fantastic Four (see 2017: #10-SUPERHEROES). Hannibal Lecter may hold psychology degrees, but he does not have the tactical goals of a mad scientist. Vincent Price’s Dr. Phibes may hold multiple degrees, but he focuses on theology. But – The Human Centipede’s Dr. Heiter is indeed a mad scientist, with interests quite similar to the feces-feasting Indian vampire, the bhuta (see 2009: #7-THREE LESSER-KNOWN VAMPIRE LEGENDS). There are so many, who are the top three mad scientists from film, having made multiple appearances as the same character?
One of the top three mad scientists from film is “David” the android from Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. David experimented upon, developed, and probably released across the galaxy the deadly species from Alien. Michael Fassbender portrayal makes one strangely sympathetic to his mad scientist activities. His specialty is bioengineering. There are theories that David is basically a human-created Satan figure in the Alien universe. It will be interesting to see if he appears again in a future film.
A second familiar mad scientist film character is Dr. Herbert West from the Reanimator films. Dr. West was portrayed by career mad scientist actor, Jeffrey Combs. Dr. West was predominantly preoccupied with bringing the dead back, their cats, and sometimes just their body parts. The four Reanimator films are based on a H.P. Lovecraft short story, and Jeffrey Combs career includes many appeariances in films adapted from Lovecraft and Poe stories.
The third mad scientist is Dr. Emmett Brown from the Back to the Future films. He was portrayed by Christopher Lloyd who is ready to make a fourth film in the series. Dr. Brown built a Delorean car time machine, and he was distinctive because he was not an evil destructive, Thanatos-pursuing mad scientist; he was actually a good mad scientist. Christopher Lloyd is also credited for his decent portrayal of Uncle Fester in The Addams Family films.
Have I ever encountered mad scientists? Yes! In earlier tales I mentioned my nightmarish experiences while working for Miskatonic University (see 2011: #3-INDESCRIBABLE HORROR AT MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY). It turned out I worked in a building with a massive secret animal laboratory. For the short time I remained working there, I carefully studied the psychologies of the animal researchers. I learned that they are all budding serial killers. They are indoctrinated to value life less, and some have subconscious drives to hate animal life. One of my job duties was to write a lengthy newsletter. One quarter page was empty of all content. A worker in the office suggested that a Save the Dolphin promotion could fit into the empty quarter page. When I mentioned this to one of these cold, indoctrinated mad scientist animal researchers, her eyes bulged furiously and insanely, and she demanded that the dolphins are not saved in this publication! She yelled to publish the newsletter with that page blank, and then she dissolved into a gelatinous stain of stupidity.
The best mad scientist films to watch for Halloween include: Island of the Lost Souls, 1977’s Island of Doctor Moreau is good too, the Reanimator films, and the six Resident Evil films. Sometimes I have served as a mad scientist, creating new monsters for my Dungeons & Dragons campaign (on Monday see 2018: #6-STRANGE MONSTERS I HAVE CREATED)…

Surry Hills residents can eliminate the stress involved with glass emergencies by calling Complete Glass – any time, any day. Reduce energy costs and limit noise pollution with our top-quality architectural Glass. This circumstance results from a difference in the temperature level of the interior surface of glass and the edge, in which the centre is hotter than the edge. If this condition remains unattended without a solution or repair, the glass edge will experience tensile stress. Once the tensile stress on the glass edge exceeds its strength, the glass pane may break. Chinese journalist Liu Hu always knew he’d have trouble with the authorities; he had been exposing corruption and wrongdoing for years. He was used to being hassled with regular fines and forced apologies imposed by his authoritarian government. He nevertheless persisted in truth-telling.
One day in 2017, Hu logged onto a travel site, but couldn’t book a flight because the site said he was “not qualified.” Soon he discovered he was blocked from buying property, using the high-speed train network, or getting a loan. And there was nothing he could do about it. His rights to essential goods and services were now circumscribed through an algorithm designed to discriminate against the 7.5 million people on China's “Dishonest Persons Subject to Enforcement” list.
Welcome to the Chinese “social credit score” system, whose goal is to rank China’s 1.4 billion people. Conceptually, it is not that different from a financial credit score in the US. But the social credit score includes things like political outspokenness, shopping habits, friends, travel habits, and anything the authorities want to encourage or discourage. This score then fine-tunes your access to essential social goods based on a discriminatory algorithm.
Such a nightmarish system could never, of course, happen in the United States. Or could it? Three recent decisions in Washington suggest it is not as far-fetched as we might imagine, with both our courts and our government effectively endorsing the way a handful of giant companies are centralizing control over our society.
First, the Republican-controlled FCC abandoned rules that prevented internet providers from discriminating between different forms of data flowing through their networks. The result is that interfering with the flow of information, rather than facilitating it, will become a lucrative new business model for telecom giants like AT&T and Comcast.
Days later, a federal judge rejected the government’s attempt to block AT&T’s takeover of Time Warner, a giant media conglomerate that owns TV channels like CNN and HBO. The government argued that the combined company would be too powerful, and able to discriminate against rivals. The judge disagreed. He essentially said Google, Facebook, and Amazon have now become so powerful that the only way AT&T can compete is to bulk up its own power in a marketplace of goliaths. Within days of that decision, a bidding war between Comcast and Disney broke out over 21st Century Fox.
The reason these companies want to merge the pipelines of the internet with the content that flows through them is simple: They want to build detailed individual profiles of internet users — how they browse the web, what they watch. If there’s any doubt that’s the reason, consider thejudge’s own words in allowing the AT&T deal. The merger allows AT&T to imitate “highly successful, data-driven entities” like Google, he said. To underscore the point, this week AT&T bought yet another company, AppNexus, which was one of the largest remaining digital advertising marketplaces not already controlled by a Silicon Valley giant.
The hits keep on coming: On Monday, the Supreme Court, in a case involving credit cards, issued a decision that will effectively immunize tech platforms and other networked systems against antitrust scrutiny.
All these decisions are dangerous on their own. Together they show how centralized control of the internet could enable the possibility of automated discrimination on the level of the individual citizen. Which is exactly the power we are seeing deployed in China, even if the politics are different.
To understand how frightening this power is, it’s important to first understand the concept of “first degree” price discrimination. First-degree price discrimination is when every individual gets a separate price based on their unique characteristics. We accept price discrimination all the time; going to the movies and getting a senior discount is price discrimination. But in that case, the decision of how to discriminate is done by class; it is publicly posted; and everyone accepts that, in this case, seniors get a discount. It is a public decision to discriminate.
Discriminating on an individual level is different and allows for powerful exploitation and manipulation of the citizen. In areas with first-degree price discrimination, like car insurance or credit cards, there are often gender- or race-based pricing choices. With increasing datafication of society, we can see this increasingly organized to the level of the individual.
An airline could, for instance, analyze your email for the words “death in the family” and “travel,” look at your credit limit, and then offer you a price based on this information. Or imagine a group of companies putting together a common list of troublemakers, perhaps negative online reviewers or commenters or consumers who frequently return items. All of a sudden, for no obvious reason, someone who returns an item to one store might find that prices on a host of socially essentially goods have done up.
Corporations generally deny they do anything like this or even that they can. But Uber recently let the cat out of the bag when it admitted that it does attempt at first degree price discrimination. Rather than charging based on the route, or demand for drivers, Uber is using “machine learning” to charge what it thinks individual customers are willing to pay. If there’s any doubt that this is the plan for AT&T, let’s turn to Judge Richard J. Leon’s decision, which he said that this new entity can use “customer data to inform their strategy and improve the customer’s experience in a number of ways.” This is code for discrimination. And the Supreme Court just made it clear it will be very hard to bring suits if new platform giants use this power to dominate markets.
All of this is being driven by the web giants — Amazon, Google, and Facebook — who use their power over shopping, search, and social networking to discriminate in favor of their own products and content. Amazon has built a massive manufacturing business by privileging its own private-label products, like Amazon batteries, over rival brands sold on its site. Google does the same thing, using its heft over search and maps to privilege its own products and services.
What these decisions collectively mean is becoming clearer — soon, all information production and distribution will increasingly be created for the profit of the web giants, or it will not be created and distributed at all. Media executives are now saying that within a few years it is likely that every major content company will be owned by a tech or telecom platform.
We are now in a totally unregulated world of lawless web giants who operate as the core infrastructure for our society. They can use their data and power to discriminate and exploit, and the strategy now for companies like AT&T is to emulate them, or die. And the deep links that intelligence agencies have with these giants suggest this power can, with a flip of a few switches, be easily weaponized by the state.
By endorsing the business model of total surveillance and discrimination, the Trump FCC, the Supreme Court, and Leon have made a deeply reckless decision about what kind of society we will have. A few goliath corporations in America may soon govern what we can see, say, do, and hear. It is not hard to see a social credit score–like system emerging in the United States. After all, Facebook, Google, Amazon, and now AT&T are in a race to effectively build one.

Top Medical Software - 2019 Reviews
Medical software includes a wide class of systems that manage the clinical and administrative functions of healthcare organizations. Systems have been tailored to automate just about every healthcare process, including billing, patient scheduling, creating and managing patient records, picture/image archiving, prescribing medication and more.
The Patient Dashboard in CareCloud, a modern, cloud-based system
In this guide we discuss the following:
Common Features of Medical Software What Type of Buyer Are You? Benefits of Medical Software Important Considerations Recent Events You Should Know About
Common Features of Medical Software
Electronic medical records
Electronic medical record (EMR) or electronic health record (EHR) software assists in creating and storing digital patient records. Helps track patient notes, demographics, histories and medications. Features include e-prescribing, SOAP notes, E&M coding advice and more. EMRs may also provide
medical lab
integration, device integration, tablet support and voice recognition.
Medical billing
Manages the creation of patient statements and submission of claims. Functions include coding, claim scrubbing, eligibility inquiry, electronic claim submission, payment posting and reporting.
Patient scheduling
Automates the process of scheduling patient visits. Features include automated follow-ups, text message/phone/email reminders and multi-location support. Typically offered with billing in a practice management suite.
Radiology information systems
Manages the operations and workflow of radiology imaging centers. Automates the process of storing, manipulating and distributing patient data and images.
Picture archiving and communications systems
Manages the storage and retrieval of DICOM images (X-rays, CAT scans, MRIs etc.). Often used in conjunction with an RIS to execute the radiology workflow efficiently.
Medical accounting
Automates accounting procedures for healthcare practices. Functions include A/R, A/P, general ledger, financial reporting and more.
Clinic management
Combines practice management software and EMR software to handle the business and practitioner sides of a clinic.
Prescription writing
Helps doctors and practices create, print, record and transmit prescriptions by offering a group of dedicated applications and software add-ons.
Patient engagement
Allows doctors to stay in communication with their patients by providing educational resources and improving patient-provider relationships.
Practice analytics
Tracks data for doctors and practices such as patient intake, revenue cycle, reimbursement rates, and other information to help give an understanding of overall operations.
What Type of Buyer Are You?
Most organizations we speak with are researching and evaluating medical software for one or more of the following reasons:
Transitioning from paper charts to digital records. “It’s raining paper” is the common cry we hear from paper-based practices. These buyers want to cut back on paper, improve office efficiency, reduce errors and run a more effective operation overall.
Replacing outdated software. This is a common scenario we hear from buyers. Their current system—whether it be a homegrown system or from a medical software vendor—is out of date and costly to maintain or update. They want a more modern system that is easier to use, meets federal requirements (e.g., ONC-ATCB certification) or that meets feature/functional needs.
Combining applications into an integrated suite. In many cases these practices have a hodgepodge of disparate applications, and as a result, find themselves doing double data entry and dealing with other inefficient workflows and processes. These organizations invest in integrated medical office management software—that is, integrated EMR, billing and scheduling applications—to centralize all information and functions in one place.
Implementing best-of-breed applications. Conversely, these buyers are focused on applications to address a specific need. Most often, buyers in this category are looking for a stand-alone billing, EMR, RIS or PACS system.
Pursuing federal incentives. Thanks to the HITECH Act of 2009, physicians have been replacing their EHRs or purchasing new ones for the first time to meet federal requirements. In order to qualify for Medicare and Medicaid incentives, physicians—or more accurately, “eligible professionals”—must make “meaningful use” of a certified EHR. The law offered incentives for physicians who complied before 2015, but physicians who still aren’t meeting “meaningful use” standards today face penalties in the form of decreased reimbursements.
We should note that outpatient and inpatient organizations often have different feature/functional requirements. For example, inpatient care provider centers such as hospitals will require systems to support bed management, UB-04 billing and potentially long-term patient stays. Meanwhile, ambulatory care providers such as primary care physicians and specialists will share common feature requirements to support “walk-in/walk-out” care.
Practices looking to integrate business intelligence tools into their existing medical solutions might be interested in healthcare BI software.
Benefits of Medical Software
The general benefits of any medical system are improved quality of patient care, increased operational efficiency and improved practice profitability. These benefits are created by different applications and impact organizations in different ways.
For example:
The automation of back-office operations streamlines administrative tasks associated with patient encounters, which may enable providers to spend more time with patients and hire fewer staff.
More accurate documentation of these encounters and a more organized claims submission process can lead to improved collections.
Automated alerts prompt providers with potential issues or risks, while automated reminders help patients return to the office when necessary, improving quality of care.
In addition to these general benefits, the major applications found in medical software each provide a host of specific benefits. For example, in 2014 we surveyed physicians about the benefits of electronic health records. They cited “easy access to records,” “more robust/legible records” and “drug interaction alerts” as the top advantages of using an EHR.
Important Considerations
Integrated suite vs. best-of-breed. When selecting a system, buyers will have the choice of implementing different applications for specific tasks, or a complete suite of tools to address all their needs. The key decision that most providers will need to make is whether to implement a standalone electronic medical records (EMR) system or replace an existing practice management system with a complete system. We hear from many buyers facing this decision as practice management systems have been ubiquitous since the 1990s and EMRs are increasing in adoption, primarily due to the HITECH Act.
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The trend toward cloud computing is impacting many industries, and healthcare is certainly one of them. Web-based, or SaaS, software offers several advantages such as lower upfront costs, reduced IT and support costs, remote accessibility and more. However, practices in rural settings may not have access to the broadband Internet necessary to efficiently run Web-based software. Moreover, Web-based systems may not support all the feature/functional needs of some practices with unique requirements.
Mobile EHR Software. Going hand-in-hand with SaaS, healthcare providers are finding themselves increasingly on the go and accessing systems from multiple offices, home and mobile devices. Tablet (e.g., iPad) and smartphone support, including iPhones and Android phones, is increasingly common. If you will be accessing your software primarily from a mobile device, we suggest choosing a vendor that has developed a native app for your device, such as MediTouch’s iPad EMR.
ONC-ATCB certification. As most healthcare professionals are aware, the HITECH Act of 2009 requires the use of electronic medical records systems by 2015. Eligible professionals can subsequently qualify for up to $44,000 through the Medicare EHR Incentive Program or up to $63,750 through the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program. To qualify, they will need to demonstrate “meaningful use” of one of the ONC-ATCB certified EMRs.
Recent Events You Should Know About
Epic partners with BI software vendor Tableau. In February 2016, Tableau software announced a “technology agreement” with Epic. This deal gives Epic’s medical software users greater access to analytics tools. For example, any dashboards created on Tableau will be integrated in Epic’s EHR.
Vendor Aprima acquires EHR reseller Healthcare Data Solutions. The deal, which was announced in January 2017, means Aprima will now service Healthcare Data Solutions’ customer base of 300 providers in 125 practices across the U.S.
McKesson plans to buy CoverMyMeds. In January 2017, McKesson Corp. announced it will be paying $1.1 billion for CoverMyMeds, a company that automates the process of prior authorization for pharmacies, providers, drugmakers and payers. The deal is expected to close before July 2018. CoverMyMeds is expected to keep operating as an independent business unit under its current leadership team.

2019 Junior Russian Nationals Preview
Because Nationals season is still not over - we wrap up with Russian junior ice dance. A new junior national champion will be crowned, with last season’s silver and bronze medalists the most likely to battle it out for the title. Spots for Junior Worlds will be determined and all placements will be a major factor for JGP assignments next season.
Ekaterina Andreeva/ Ivan Desyatov
Age: 15/17
Started Skating Together: 2017
Coach: Ksenia Rumyantseva
Season's Best: 137.00
Rhythm Dance: Chicago
Free Dance: Sherlock Holmes
Andreeva/Desyatov made their JGP debut this season and while doing something that helps you stand out is important, perhaps attempting to mix the Charleston with a tango isn’t the best way to be remembered. We’ve been iffy on mixing rhythms in general and Chicago tangos in particular, and this one is really something, although we do enjoy a good headband. Their free dance on the other hand, is a much better vehicle for them. It utilizes their speed, energy, and somewhat offbeat natures in a way that works for them rather than against them. Given that they missed out on a JGP medal, they'll be looking for redemption here and to beat out some of their more decorated brethren to set themselves up for next season.
Diana Davis/ Denis Smolkin
Age: 16/19
Started Skating Together: 2018
Coach: Svetlana Alexeeva and Elena Kustarova
Season's Best: 148.62
Rhythm Dance: Oblivion/Por una cabeza
Free Dance: James Bond
Davis/Smolkin also made their JGP debut this season and came away with a bronze medal. They are a new team this season, and the only team in this preview who didn’t compete at Russian Junior Nationals last year. They are off to a great start, a JGP bronze medal would be enough for a second assignment in any other country without such a stacked field as Russian junior dance at the moment, and while they are still showing signs of being a new team and getting used to skating with each other, they’ve got lots of potential. They've got some strong transitions and highlights for such a new team, such as her solo illusion spins during their choreographic step sequence, and despite their relative newness skate with a lot of attack. It'll be a tough task to aim for the podium, but if they can make a splash here, they can get an early start on next season.
Polina Ivanenko/ Daniil Karpov
Age: 16/18
Started Skating Together: 2014
Coach: Svetlana Alexeeva and Elena Kustarova
Season's Best: 151.69
Rhythm Dance: Tango
Free Dance: Peter Gunn
Back on the JGP for the first time since their debut in 2016, Ivanenko/Karpov ended up with two assignments, winning silver and then bronze, and were first alternates for the JGPF. They have great basic skating skills together and a strong foundation for their elements like their lifts and spins. It's a show of Russian ice dance's incredible depth that a team this solid will have to fight to have any chance of making the junior world team. But if they can bring their best, and there are missteps from the expected medalists, they could make it happen. Regardless they’ll be looking to place as high as possible to be one of the top teams for next season’s JGP.
Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva/ Nikita Nazarov
Age: 16/20
Started Skating Together: 2016
Coach: Denis Samokhin
Season's Best: 164.54
Rhythm Dance: Tango Amore
Free Dance: Human/Nemesis
Khudaiberdieva/Nazarov improved on two JGP bronzes from the debut last season to win two golds this year and qualify for the JGPF, where they finished in third. This is their final junior season as they age over the offseason and their last chance to make the Junior Worlds team. They're a fast, expressive team with some great memorable highlights that have stuck with us all season, such as the opening to their tango which makes fantastic use of Elizaveta's long limbs and flexibility. She gives excellent face, and they're both very musical, dramatic performers. They had some of the lower scores on the JGP circuit of the finalists, but rallied for the bronze in Vancouver and could place even higher here if they've continued to improve and shaken off the nerves that have sometimes plagued them in the past.
Eva Kuts/ Dmitrii Mikhailov
Age: 17/20
Started Skating Together: 2015
Coach: Ekaterina Rubleva and Ivan Shefer
Season's Best: 142.97
Rhythm Dance: Prelude and Ricercare
Free Dance: Every Other Freckle
Another team back on the JGP in 2018 after making their debut in 2016, Kuts/Mikhailov won bronze at their one assignment. They are the second of three teams mentioned here who are aging out of juniors after this season. They have very solid partnering and a nice light quality to their skating, maybe not the most conducive to this season’s tango, but definitely evident in their free dance. Reaching the podium here would be a very tall order for them, but they can give two strong performances and improve on their 7th place finish last season.
Elizaveta Shanaeva/ Devid Naryzhnyy
Age: 15/19
Started Skating Together: 2016
Coach: Irina Zhuk and Alexander Svinin
Season's Best: 152.21
Rhythm Dance: Tango d’Amor/Maria de Buenos Aires
Free Dance: Samson and Dalilah
Shanaeva/Naryzhnyy had a strong start to their JGP debut season, winning silver at their first assignment and putting themselves in contention of the JGPF. But nerves and a few stumbles at their second assignment kept them off the podium. This field will be a great opportunity for them to show their potential, especially with two of the top contenders moving to seniors next season. They could even contend for a medal and a spot at Junior Worlds, as the spots have historically been awarded to the medalists regardless of the results of the fall. They've got some great elements, such as the lift in their rhythm dance that gained them so much praise on the JGP circuit, and they're very fast with a strong connection between them. If they avoid nervous jitters and skate their best, they may earn their first trip to junior worlds and begin preparing for a possible breakout next season.
Sofia Shevchenko/ Igor Eremenko
Age: 17/21
Started Skating Together: 2014
Coach: Irina Zhuk and Alexander Svinin
Season's Best: 170.66

The veterans of this field, Shevchenko/Eremenko have been competing on the JGP for four seasons, medaling at all of their assignments. They wrapped up their JGP career at the 2018 JGPF with a win by the slimmest of margins, but a huge testament to their hard work this season. Most notably, that they won the JGPF on tech, the place their scores have typically lagged a bit. Their tango is one of the best of the season, and their free dance builds nicely on their successful free dance style from last season while adding a more uplifting ending. Shevchenko/Eremenko might just be juniors but have some of the best twizzles in the field, great lifts, and one of the best uses of the choreographic step sequence. They have a great chance to win the title if they build on their performances in Vancouver and once again nail the technical side that has been their downfall in the past while continuing to deliver entertaining and memorable skates.

The youngest team in this preview, Tyutyunina/Shustitskiy are also the only ones who haven’t competed on the JGP yet. They were alternates this season following their 14th place finish at junior nationals last year. They’ll be looking to improve on that and maybe even contend with some of the JGP medalists here. They posted very promising scores in domestic events, even beating out some teams that earned JGP assignments over them. While they're lacking in experience and maturity compared to the other teams in this recap, they're great skaters with a precocious charm, and could place quite high if they bring their best. While they're unlikely to medal here, a great placement, especially with more established teams aging out, should earn them the JGP placements that they just missed out on this season, and set them up for a great international debut next season.
Arina Ushakova/ Maxim Nekrasov

The reigning Junior World bronze medalists will be looking for a bit of redemption here. Finishing second at the JGPF by one hundredth of a point is an outstanding accomplishment, but they were no doubt looking for more after winning both of their JGP assignments with by far the highest scores of the season. If we’re being honest you’re either into their programs or you’re really not, but either way can’t deny that they’ve got a style all their own and a commitment to forming their own identity as a team that is pretty amazing for a relatively young team. Their biggest weakness is polish-- their speed and power is easily senior level, but they have a tendency towards messiness that sometimes takes away from their many strengths. Additionally their programs are always so...unique that it requires full confidence and security from them. Any time they're feeling a little off their programs lose impact. If Ushakova/Nekrasov can use their loss at JGPF to fuel them here to skate with full attack and perhaps a touch more neatness, they won't just be able to claim the title, but set themselves up for a victory at Junior Worlds.
