The first five #hatchlings from this batch of #quailchicks were dry and ready to move out of the #incubator. Making space inside the #brooder for new #hatchlings. I've taken a 3" deep tupperware container, lined the bottom with straw, and added shallow food and water dishes (shallow because baby #quails aren't necessarily the brightest crayons in the box, and can drown very quickly.) 🤷 I've put the box inside the brooder about 10 hours before I plan to move the hatchlings into it, to - a. Check if the bigger #chicks can get in; and b. New batch of baby #quails! Only one survived from the previous batch of 50 newborns, sadly. That one has been added to this batch. These ones are older than the previous ones which I got -- they're almost two weeks old. I learned yesterday about "flushing," which you're supposed to do regularly with #quailchicks in order to keep their digestive systems healthy, and minimise mortalities. So I'm hoping that this batch will fare better than the previous one. I got 16 this time + the 1 survivor from the previous batch = 17 chicks in the brooder this time. 💕 I'm going to put a separate shoebox in the brooder and put the new #hatchlings in the shoebox later tonight, to protect them from the bigger chicks. Two more have hatched overnight! 😍 They're all still inside the incubator for now so they can dry off and fluff up (also, to prevent external contamination for others who might currently be in the process of #hatching.) Man, I really should get another brooder. At 11 days old, my baby #quails are starting to get their feathers! 💕 There was a mysterious die-off in the brooder on Saturday night and during the day on Sunday -- lost 12 overnight and 3 more during the day yesterday. All the ones who had died were ones who hadn't started getting their feathers, so I'm assuming that it was some kind of "failure to thrive" thing? Not really sure, but I'll figure it out. Meanwhile, I had made some adjustments to the temperature and humidity, and replaced the straw in the brooder again.
