Drawing of the master plan for the Vieux Port of Marseille, a World Heritage Site, for a project by Foster + Partners that reclaimed the quaysides by transforming them into a unified, pedestrian-friendly civic space. Along the Quai des Belges, the port’s prominent easternmost edge, the firm designed an expansive pavilion that is composed of a razor thin floating mirrored slab supported by only six slender columns, which invites visitors to linger and reflect. The project was completed in time for the celebration of the city being named European Capital of Culture for 2013. www.fosterandpartners.com
