Why does your body have different systems for liquid and solid waste?
Trick question. It doesn’t. Urine isn’t filtered off feces—it’s filtered from your bloodstream. Your kidneys rely on seeing a lot of blood flow, and they have intricate mechanisms for tightly regulating the chemistry of your blood. Kidneys are built to keep our blood within the very narrow range of acidity where we can stay alive. (Which is why “alkalinizing” diets are generally going to be bullshit.) They keep us from having so much salt that our brains stop working, or so little that our medullas explode. They regulate our potassium so that our heart doesn’t go into a fatal arrhythmia due to membrane instability. Kidneys do break down many chemicals, including NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen), but they have one fundamental job—keep our blood from making our bodies an unlivable environment. And they do that by using water from our blood to carry away whatever we don’t want at a given moment.
Bowels, meanwhile, handle food. After food gets churned to chyme in the stomach, it gets squeezed into the small intestine. The small intestine is very long but smaller in diameter than the large intestine. It has one job: retrieve nutrients. The digested-digesting-food slurry makes it way through the small intestine thanks to rhythmic, longitudinal muscle contractions called peristalsis. After about 30 feet of this, it reaches a hard turn into the large intestine in your lower right abdominal quadrant, where the appendix hangs off the main channel. The large intestine goes up to the diaphragm, turns about 90 degrees, runs across your belly at the top just under your ribs, and at your left side makes another hard turn down, hanging a right at the spleen to dive down the left front side of your belly and then back and down to your rectum and then your anus. The large intestine, also known as the colon, has one job: get water back out of the food slurry, now that the water has helped the body absorb nutrients by creating a lot of surface area for contact with membranes lining the small intestine. So the longer stool spends in your colon, the more water gets sucked out of it, the harder and drier your stool gets, and the more difficult it is for the combination of peristalsis and your conscious effort to get it to move down and out of your body.
Anyway, eat lots of fiber. Drinking water won’t make you poop; your kidneys are way too good at regulating your fluid balance. Only fiber and indigestible sugars can save you now.

Trektober Day 28 - Anniversary. If there's one couple I root for as much as Book Club in Star Trek, it's these two - Gul Dukat and Kai Winn are the two most horrible people in the quadrant, have wonderful chemistry and deserve to grow old together (in a penal colony, far away from everyone).

One Night in Miami | LN4
Summary: An eventful night with a close friend turns Lando’s world upside down when he’s forced to confront his true feelings about her. As they return to normal, he cannot seem to forget their time together and neither can she. Will they find each other once again?
Pairing: Lando Norris x OC (Renn)
Warnings: Smut, a lot of angst, fluff
Author's note: A little context around this series, if I may. I started writing this on 24/04/24, before Lando's Miami win. All the fours in the date - IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SIGN, is all I'm saying. Anyway, as always, please send through your feedback, suggestions, or requests!

CHAPTER 1 - Miami 2023
Lando had invited all of his closest friends and the Quadrant team out to Miami for the Miami Grand Prix. The city buzzed with anticipation, the atmosphere electric with the excitement of the upcoming race. The streets were alive with the hum of engines and the vibrant energy of fans from all over the world.
For Lando and his friends, it was more than just a race. It was a week of fun, filming content, and partying until the sun rose over the glistening Miami skyline. Amongst the attendees was Pietra’s best friend, Renn. When Pietra moved to London, Renn was the first person she met and they instantly became good friends. It was a natural introduction to Max, Pietra’s boyfriend, and then Lando, Max’s best friend. Lando and Renn were quite literally cut from the same cloth in terms of their humour and banter. There was natural chemistry from the get-go between them.
The sun was setting over Miami as the group gathered at a beachfront bar, the warm breeze carrying the sound of laughter and music. Lando, with his infectious grin, was in the centre of it all, regaling everyone with stories and jokes. Renn, standing beside him, matched his energy effortlessly, their banter a seamless dance that had everyone in stitches.
“Remember that time we tried to film that prank video and ended up getting chased by security?” Lando said, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
“How could I forget? I still have a scar on my knee from hiding in that hedge!” Renn laughed, shaking her head. Pietra, sitting nearby with Max, watched the exchange with a knowing smile.
“You two are a dangerous combination,” she said, raising her glass in a mock toast. “But I have to admit, it’s entertaining.”
The days in Miami were a blur of excitement. The group spent their mornings filming content for their respective channels, capturing the essence of the city and the thrill of the Grand Prix. They interviewed drivers, explored the paddock, and even managed to get a few laps in on the track.
In the afternoons, they lounged by the pool or explored Miami’s vibrant neighbourhoods, soaking in the culture and cuisine. Renn and Lando often found themselves paired up, whether it was trying out the latest food trucks or challenging each other to a game of beach volleyball. The week culminated with the much-anticipated Miami Grand Prix. However, the race did not go according to plan for Lando or McLaren. Technical issues plagued the car, and despite his best efforts, Lando couldn’t climb the ranks. He finished far lower than he had hoped, and the frustration was evident as he stepped out of the car.
In the garage, Lando was a mix of frustration and devastation. His usually bright demeanour was clouded with disappointment. Renn, always the one to lighten the mood, tried to joke around, but Lando was not feeling it. Sensing his need for support, she shifted from humour to empathy, offering a listening ear and comforting presence.
Throughout the afternoon and early evening, they had a few moments alone. Lando vented to her about his frustrations with the car, his feeling of inadequacy as a driver, and the pressure he felt to perform. Renn listened intently, offering small touches on his arm, reassuring words, and a calm presence.
Deciding to forget the entire race weekend and write it off as one to learn from and move past, Lando and the group decided to go out clubbing. The vibrant Miami nightlife beckoned, promising an escape from the day’s frustrations. The city’s pulsating energy was the perfect antidote to their subdued spirits. They headed to one of Miami’s hottest clubs, a place known for its electric atmosphere and celebrity sightings. As they entered, the thumping bass of the music enveloped them, and the flashing lights painted the scene in vibrant colours. Lando led the way, determined to let loose and shake off the negativity of the race.
On the dance floor, the group immersed themselves in the music, moving to the rhythm and letting the beat drive away their worries. Lando and Renn danced together, their chemistry undeniable as they laughed and moved in sync. For a while, the frustrations of the day melted away, replaced by the sheer joy of the moment. At the bar, they ordered rounds of exotic cocktails, toasting to friendship and resilience. Lando, his spirits lifted by the music and the company, found himself smiling and laughing more freely. Renn stayed close, her presence a steady source of comfort.
Later, as the night deepened and the club continued to buzz with life, Lando and Renn found themselves on the rooftop terrace, looking out over the city. The Miami skyline was a breathtaking sight, a sea of lights stretching out into the horizon.
“I needed this,” Lando admitted, leaning on the railing. “Just to forget about today, even if it’s just for a little while.”
“We all need to let go sometimes. You’ll come back stronger, Lando. I know it,” Renn nodded, her gaze fixed on the distant lights.
Despite her reassurance, the disappointment in his race result lingered. Lando couldn't shake the frustration gnawing at the back of his mind. As the group continued to revel in the club’s intoxicating atmosphere, one drink led to the next and the next. The flashing lights and pulsing music blurred together, creating a haze that Lando eagerly embraced, hoping to drown out the nagging sense of failure.
Renn stayed by his side, matching him drink for drink, her laughter and energy unwavering. She knew he was still struggling and wanted to be there for him, even if it meant getting a little too drunk herself. Their friends cheered them on, oblivious to the deeper emotions at play. At some point, the decision to leave was made - perhaps unspoken but mutually understood. They stumbled out of the club, giggling and leaning on each other for support. The cool night air hit them, a stark contrast to the club’s warm, enclosed chaos. They ordered an Uber, collapsing into the backseat in a fit of laughter, still trying to keep the party going.
As the car sped through Miami’s neon-lit streets, the city’s energy seemed to pulse in time with their still-racing hearts. They exchanged slurred stories and jokes, but beneath the surface, Renn could see the tension in Lando’s eyes. The alcohol had numbed the sharp edge of his disappointment but hadn’t erased it. When they reached the hotel, they managed to navigate the lobby with a mix of stealth and stumbling, trying to keep their giggles under control. Renn’s hand was a steadying presence on Lando’s arm, guiding him towards the elevator and up to his room.
Inside, the room was dark and quiet, a stark contrast to the vibrant noise they had left behind. Renn flicked on a lamp, casting a soft, warm glow across the room. Lando collapsed onto the edge of the bed, his shoulders slumping as the weight of the day settled back onto him. The party, the drinks, and the laughter had been a temporary reprieve, but now reality crept back in. Renn watched him closely, her own drunken haze giving way to concern. She could see he was still not himself, the disappointment etched in his features despite his attempts to mask it.
“Lan,” she said softly, sitting beside him and placing a hand on his back. “You don’t have to hold it all in.”
He looked at her, his eyes tired and a bit glassy from the alcohol.
“I just... I wanted this weekend to be different,” he admitted, his voice cracking slightly. “I feel like I let everyone down.”
“You didn’t let anyone down. Things just didn’t go as planned. It happens. But it doesn’t define who you are or what you can do,” She shook her head, her hand rubbing gentle circles on his back.
“I know that, but it’s hard not to feel like I’m not good enough sometimes,” Lando sighed deeply, his gaze dropping to the floor.
“You are more than good enough. One bad race doesn’t change that. You’ve got so many people who believe in you, who see how incredible you are,” Renn moved closer, her hand shifting to hold his.
She leaned her head against his shoulder, the closeness providing comfort to them both. For a moment, they sat in silence, the room’s quietude enveloping them. The world outside continued its frenetic pace, but in this small bubble, they found solace in each other’s presence. The alcohol’s numbing effect was beginning to wane, but the warmth of Renn’s words and touch remained, helping to ease Lando’s troubled mind.
“Are you going to be okay tonight?” she asked, her voice soft with worry. Lando sighed, the weight of his emotions evident in his response.
“No,” he admitted, his voice tinged with vulnerability. “Not at all.”
Renn’s heart ached for him.
“Should I stay with you until you fall asleep?” she offered gently. He looked up at her, a flicker of gratitude in his eyes.
“I’d like that,” Lando conceded.
The next moments were a blur of movement and quiet coordination. Lando stripped off his shirt, the sight of his toned torso briefly catching Renn’s attention. He then grabbed his sleep trunks and disappeared into the bathroom to change. Meanwhile, Renn began discarding the thousands of pillows that adorned the bed, creating a comfortable space for them to settle in. When Lando returned, he held out one of his shirts for her.
“Here, you can change out of that,” he said, gesturing to her sequined dress that shimmered under the soft light.
“Thanks,” she replied, taking the shirt with a grateful smile.
Renn went into the bathroom to change into the cool cotton shirt, a welcome relief from the constricting dress. It smelled faintly of him, a comforting blend of cologne and something uniquely Lando. When she emerged, she found Lando already in bed, looking slightly more at ease in his sleep trunks.
She slid into bed beside him, the mattress dipping slightly under her weight. Without hesitation, Lando moved closer, laying on top of her, his head resting on her chest. The proximity was intimate, yet felt completely natural. She began brushing his hair back, twirling his curls between her fingers in a soothing rhythm.
They stayed like that for a while, the silence between them comfortable and warm. Renn’s touch seemed to calm Lando, his breathing slowing as he relaxed against her. She could feel the tension leaving his body, replaced by a soft, sleepy tranquillity. Eventually, Lando looked up at her, his eyes meeting hers with a vulnerable intensity. Without a word, he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers, a gentle, heartfelt kiss that conveyed all the emotions he couldn’t put into words. Renn kissed him back, her fingers still tangled in his hair, her heart swelling with a mix of tenderness and affection. When they finally pulled apart, Lando rested his forehead against hers.
“Thank you,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. Renn smiled, her hand caressing his cheek.
“Always,” she replied softly.
As the minutes passed, their quiet touching took on a different quality. It was still gentle, but there was an undercurrent of something deeper, something more intense. Lando’s hand began to move, tracing slow, deliberate paths up and down her side. His fingers grazed her ribs, slipped under the hem of the shirt she wore, and rested on the smooth skin of her hip.
Renn’s breath hitched slightly, her heart beating faster in response. She continued to twirl his curls, her other hand drifting to his back, where she traced light patterns with her fingertips. The tension between them grew, an unspoken understanding passing through their shared glances and touches.
Lando’s hand ventured further, moving up her inner thigh and over her underwear, pausing briefly at her hip bone before slipping under the shirt yet again. The sensation sent a shiver through Renn, her body reacting to his touch. She looked down at him, their eyes locking in a moment of mutual recognition. His fingers continued their exploration, brushing against the sensitive skin just below her ribs. Renn’s hand stilled in his hair, her breath catching as his touch sent sparks of sensation through her. The room seemed to grow warmer, the air thick with the tension building between them.
Slowly, Lando shifted, lifting himself slightly to look into her eyes. His gaze was intense, filled with a mix of vulnerability and desire. He leaned in, their lips meeting in a kiss that started soft but quickly deepened, fueled by the emotions they had been holding back. Renn responded eagerly, her hands sliding down his back, pulling him closer. Their kisses grew more urgent, a silent communication of their need for each other. Lando’s hands roamed under the shirt, finding the curves of her body and memorising every inch with his touch.
With a gentle but insistent tug, Lando pulled the shirt up and over her head, discarding it to the side. He paused to take in the sight of her, his eyes filled with admiration and desire. Renn reached up, cupping his face and pulling him back down for another deep, passionate kiss. While their kisses intensified, Lando’s hands continued their exploration, his touch sending waves of pleasure through Renn. She arched into him, her body responding to his every movement. His mouth left hers, trailing kisses down her neck and across her collarbone, each touch igniting a new flame of sensation.
Renn’s hands were not idle either. She traced the lines of his muscles, her fingers memorising the feel of him. She slid her hands under the waistband of his sleep trunks, encouraging him to shed the last barrier between them. Lando complied, kicking off his trunks and returning his attention to her. She pushed her panties to the side before he pushed his tip through her folds. He moved slowly as he entered her, savouring each moment of contact. Their bodies pressed together, skin against skin, the warmth and closeness intensifying their connection.
The intensity between them surged, and suddenly they were fucking like prisoners who had just been released after a ten-year sentence. Their movements were frantic, fueled by a desperate need to feel each other fully. There was no room for hesitation; only raw, unfiltered desire. Lando's hands gripped her hips tightly as he thrust into her with a fervour that spoke of all the emotions he had bottled up throughout the day. Renn matched his intensity, her nails digging into his back as she arched against him, meeting each of his powerful thrusts with equal force.
Their breaths came in ragged gasps, the sound of their bodies colliding filling the room. The bed creaked under the strain of their passion, but they paid no mind. Every touch, every kiss was a release, a cathartic expression of everything they felt for each other. Lando's mouth found hers again, their kisses bruising and desperate. He moved faster, deeper, their shared rhythm driving them both to the edge. Renn cried out his name, her voice a mixture of pleasure and urgency, urging him on.
The tension built to a breaking point, their bodies trembling with the force of their connection. They came together in a shattering climax, their cries mingling as they clung to each other, riding out the waves of pleasure that crashed over them. Afterward, they lay tangled together, their bodies slick with sweat and still trembling from the intensity of their lovemaking. Lando rested his head on Renn's chest, listening to the rapid beat of her heart as their breathing slowly returned to normal. It had been the first time something like that had happened between them. Sure, they shared a few kisses every so often when he would be gone for a few weeks, but nothing like that, never full blown, passionate lovemaking.
“Fuck,” Lando moaned, the tension gone from his body. He hesitated for a moment, not wanting to break their skin-to-skin contact, but he also wanted to clean her up after cumming inside her. Renn felt his hesitation and gently cupped his face.
“It's okay,” she whispered, smiling softly, her fingers brushing over his cheek. He nodded, kissing her tenderly before reluctantly pulling away.
“I'll be right back,” he promised, slipping off the bed and heading to the bathroom.
Renn watched him go, feeling a strange mix of contentment and vulnerability. The intensity of their lovemaking had left her breathless, but she also felt a deep sense of connection with Lando that went beyond physical pleasure. Lando returned with a warm, damp cloth and a look of tender concern on his face. He carefully cleaned her, his touch gentle and reverent. It was a quiet, intimate moment that spoke of his care and respect for her.
Once he was done, he discarded the cloth and slid back into bed beside her, pulling her close. They lay there, wrapped in each other’s arms, the silence between them filled with unspoken emotions. The disappointment of the day was a distant memory, replaced by the warmth they had found in each other's arms.

i think it's interesting how ectobiology is being used as a symbol of the regressive and the repetitive; it is literally the science of "making babies out of ghosts", so in other words the art of remixing existing ideas over and over again (its literal main purpose in Sburb: creating multiple groups of slightly different kids, literally 'paradox clones', so it can attempt to reproduce the same way again and again until something works). Dirk thinks making a new species out of old ideas via ectobiology is the way for Homestuck to keep going forever. Jade thinks having a new kid without ectobiology is the one way to break the monotony, even if it's literally with one of the same eight people her family has been tied up with for the past 5000 years.
this does have further implications worth discussing when viewed through a queer lens. what does it say, for instance, that these characters appear to view pregnancy as the only way to have a "real" baby, and making a baby in a lab as the "fake" way? even Kanaya seems to echo this sentiment when she expresses resentment over her race having been forced to reproduce with machines. we have been talking a lot recently about how aspects of paradox space that may seem queer or liberating on first glance - quadrants, for instance - are actually just veiled tools of the patriarchy, and it's true that the same could be thought of ectobiology; for one thing, Sburb only seems interested in pairing men and women, even when they lack any sexual chemistry in reality. so maybe it is queer and liberating that Jade and Rose, by eschewing ectobiology altogether, have earned the place of being the first gay couple in Homestuck to make a baby together, breaking that streak. but because Homestuck^2 inherited by necessity the Epilogues' positions on sex and gender, which at times come across as deeply un-queer and un-liberating, it's also true that Jade and Rose have only been allowed that opportunity because of some fluke of their biology. nothing seems to have been truly liberated from the way it was before; if two people on Earth C want to have a kid regardless of their own biology, the very machines which are being painted as regressive seem to be the only option they currently have. and this has ramifications for the building of interspecies families just as much as it does nonheterosexual ones, which is a major concern not just for the subjects of Jane's xenophobic regime at large, but also for a great portion of Homestuck's own core cast

Why Janeway needs a therapist
I got a request for a follow-up to list out why Janeway also needs to see a therapist
Tumblr media
Note: I'm treating at least Mosaic as canon. Some of the Voyager stuff might be out of order and probably forgetting stuff.
Got captured by Cardassians and had to listen to her Captain be tortured (and was possibly tortured herself)
Lost her fiancé and father in a shuttle accident, in which she could maybe have saved one of them but didn't
We have no knowledge of what she may have been thru in her career before Voyager. Wolf 359? Other battles?
Lost x% of her crew when thrown to the Delta Quadrant
Made the decision to blow up the Array that stranded the remainder of her crew 70 years from home
Effectively lost another fiancé by stranding herself 70 years from home
Had to deal with a race wanting to steal her crews organs
Had to deal with a Cardassian spy on her ship
Had to deal with integrating the Maquis crew into her Starfleet crew
First Officer got kidnapped by above Cardiassian spy
Got hyper-evolved into a salamander and had babies with her helmsman
Had to deal with Q, on multiple occasions
Saw a double of herself blow up her ship to save them, plus had to accept a duplicate Ops officer and baby onto her ship
Had to kill one being to get her Security officer and Morale officer back
Got stranded on a planet with her first officer, fell in love with him, and then got rescued where they had to go back to being just friends
Got ship taken over by hostile force and then stranded on another planet, where crew died
Had to rescue her Ops officer and Helmsman from prison
Ferengi fucked up a way home
Had to deal with time traveling back to 1996 Earth and saving the future
Single handedly fought a macrovirus to save the ship
Died. Then gaslight by an entity posing as her dead father
First Officer brainwashed by a bunch of former Borg
Had to save officers from a rouge holodeck program written by the Cardassian spy from 3 years ago
Had to make a deal with the Borg, that her First Officer kind of went back on and then fought with him
Had to rehabilitate a former Borg drone
First Officer brainwashed to fight in a alien war
Brain chemistry messed with by aliens doing experiments
Destroyed the ship in a timeline that reset
Fiancé officially broke up with her.
Aliens captured the ship and brainwashed entire crew to participate in war simulations
Switched bodies with some of her crew (was this in Vis a Vis or just fanfic?)
Had to deal with the Omega particle
Alien that they all forget was on their ship and fell in love with her First Officer
Duplicated into goo, then dies later when she doesn't realize she's a duplicate
Major depressive episode during a part of space with no stars
Gets her crew killed by deciding to try a slipstream drive
Demoted helmsman for defying orders
Had to play mind games with alien who wanted to fuck her
Had to discipline her love struck ops officer when she's not getting any herself
Drove her First Officer/Best Friend/Would be lover to the brink of madness to save the ship
More temporal mechanics shenanigans
Found another Starfleet ship and then they turned out to be killers and crazy
Holographic boyfriend malfunctions
Former alien crew member who evolved to a higher being comes back super pissed off
Willingly assimilated into a Borg
Had to help First Officer put the ship back together after it was split into 37 different timeframes
Brainwashed to work in a factory, falls in love with an alien, forced to give him up when her memory gets restored
Had to deal with future self coming back and telling her the awful things about the future
Watched First Officer/Best Friend/Would be Lover get involved with her protégé
At least a year we don't know about. Hopefully she saw a therapist
Promoted to Admiral then sends Starfleet flagship on a mission that costs the life of one of their most beloved officers
Three years we don't know about. Hopefully she at least took a couple vacations
Sends Former First Officer / Best Friend / Would be Lover on a mission where he gets lost 52 years into the future
Spends possibly 3 years looking for said First Officer / Best Friend / Would be Lover
Retires! Buys a nice house! Gardens!
Forced out of retirement cuz synthetic beings attack Mars shipyards

I wish Resolutions never happened.
Okay, okay. I know how that sounds coming from someone who isn’t J/C. But hear me out? I promise I’m serious and not trolling.
I think Resolutions jump started J/C for a lot of people, but it derailed it for me. I think I’d 100% be on board if the episode 1) didn’t exist or 2) treated Chakotay differently in it. I’ll start with 1, since that’s the first sentence of this post. My reasons for it are also briefer.
1. If the episode didn’t exist, the chemistry could have continued to grow (as it had been) over several more seasons and still fall within the bounds Kate Mulgrew created around her character. I’m a hopeless fan of slow burns. With this episode this turned into a burn that flared and then had diminishing returns. (Actually, no returns during the show proper).
On to 2, because I actually have more feelings about this.
2. They shouldn’t have had Chakotay so easily give in to their ‘new life’. This man led a cell within an insurgency movement that had purpose. Reason. He gave up the thing he chose that estranged him from his family to do it. Voyager and the Delta Quadrant had put a pause to his Maquis goals, but this episode killed it. That’s a travesty.
I wish he had worked as hard as she had to get off New Earth. That he helped her maintain her equipment, even if he couldn’t do the science, and bounced ideas off of her as he tried to provide comforts she would deny herself otherwise. That yes, he admitted she gave him peace, but he couldn’t truly enjoy that peace knowing his (now their) people were still out there looking for home. That his true home was making sure Voyager and its people were safe, and if endless duty and toil came with it then he was prepared to share that burden with her.
And make that devotion mostly platonic, so that in the following seasons, as he keeps his word to her to share that burden, it can grow into something more romantic (even if never quite shown because of KM).
Instead, they made him resigned/content to live the rest of his days not knowing what became of his people. That’s not sexy, that’s not him. And when they did that to him, it made me watch his character for the rest of the series like, “dude just wants to camp. How..bland.” I mourned the complexity he could have had. Not fair to him at all.

We all love Vrisrezi, but do you think Aranea and Latula have chemestry in some quadrant?
Unfortunately, no. Absolutely not. They represent a break in a cycle, and have a completely neutral relationship where both parties are uninterested in any romance or even friendship developing. Latula finds Aranea boring, and Aranea… Sees her as Inspiration Porn, so… Yeah, probably better nothing’s pursued. The chemistry is next to none, even if they had interest in each other. I can’t think of anything particularly interesting to read coming of that, I can’t imagine any character development, nothing. It’d just feel empty, and like a Pyrope/Serket relationship for the sake of a Pyrope/Serket relationship.
There’s a whole conversation between Porrim and Latula about the fact that the Pyropes and Serkets tend to have storied relationships, actually, and the fact that Latula and Aranea are the exception.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is leagues more interesting than Obligatory Pyrope/Serket Relationship to me. That’s just my personal take, though.

Prelims, Vote 8 of 8
The top 5 finales will move on to be included in the main bracket
Propaganda is under the cut, may include spoilers
Brooklyn Nine-Nine - 8.09 / 8.10 The Last Day
It just... season 8 had been so bad as a whole, it attempted to touch on the blm movement and did it in an okay at best way and in the wake of it all, i think a lot of people just weren't here for cop shows. The finale tried to bring the magic back with one last heist and it did pull out all the stops but I don't know, it just left me feeling really cold. And the ending being that even though the main character wasn't a cop anymore, that he would return to the station every year for the heist... it just never escapes the cop narrative even after he's left.
Chén Qíng Lìng/The Untamed - Episode 50
I nominate this final on grounds of CCP information control, censorship and homophobia. They were so scared of the power of wangxian that they ended up banning ao3 in china and in the show they have to inexplicably have them part ways just to hammer home the no-homo. Plus the show is just kind of objectively bad.... but it rewires your brain all the same
Community - 6.13 Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television
ok i haven’t watched it in a while but it wasn’t the episode’s fault this show had been going downhill for a while. The finale put it out of its misery mostly.
Kyle XY - 3.10 Bringing Down the House
The writers knew they were getting canceled and chose to raise more questions than answers and set up cliffhangers, rather than have a satisfying end. I'm sure it was a last ditch effort to save the show, but it didn't work and now it's just a bad finale.
Northern Exposure - 6.22 Let's Dance / 6.23 Tranquility Base
No propaganda submitted
Ozark - 4.14 A Hard Way to Go
No propaganda submitted
Soul Eater - 1.51 The Word Is Bravery!
ugh god it just gave up on any attempt at character development or the ending of the story in any meaningful way. instead of a complex universe journey exploring her bond with soul, and death the kid becoming the new god of death, maka just...wins the day by 'being brave', extremely underwhelming and borderline nonsensical
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - 7.25 / 7.26 What You Leave Behind
Man so okay like it’s not the worst worst one out there but man they really just fuckikg did that. Found family all went and spread themselves across the quadrant with the head of the show the leader, Captain Benjamin Sisko who really just wanted to live on Bajor, got turned into an incorporeal being who could no longer live a linear life while his wife and unborn child had to go on without him. They didn’t even have him saying goodbye to his actual son. His literal son did not get a goodbye, they only gave that to Kasidy, and no hate to Kasidy, she’s my girl, but she’s only been there for three year while his actual son Jake sisko was still basically a kid. He was like 19, 20 and no goodbye fork his dad he’s lost time and time again. Some characters got a satisfying ending but then Julian Bashir is left to stay on deep space nine supposedly still in love with Ezri Dax and together (but let’s be honest, it was a terrible forced decision. They made no sense, and had no chemistry) and still stuck without moving forward or changing. Like what a cop out. Not to mention the terrible cgi fire caves where literally gods got thrown into a fire pit and that was the big climax

Real question that I’d love your expert answer on.
The Winchesters was terribly marketed and from my understanding, that is the role of the producers/showrunner to create the elevator speech and marketing materials for the series, correct?
The way TW was sold to the audience seemed unexciting, unclear and didn’t match up with how the show ended. It’s like they weren’t really sure who the audience was supposed to be so the messages were so general that I don’t think it targeted or resonated with anyone. (My marketing prof always said when you try to target everyone, you appeal to no one.).
Just like the majority of the fandom, the concept was poorly conceived and even more poorly executed.
Regardless—- Now that we know how the prequel turned sequel played out, (1) who would you have targeted the message to, and (2) how would you have described the series to make it make sense to that audience.
I’d love to hear how you would have sold it to get people watch it.
While you are correct that producers/showrunner create elevator pitches, the marketing materials are created by an agency outside the studio. The agency hires Promotion Producers to develop campaign strategies and create promotional materials such as trailers and commercials according to set of specifications. Where those specifications come from can be good questions. Ideally, they are from showrunners, but often are from Senior Producer or from the studios' own marketing team.
So in The Winchesters, the Promotion Producers are given scenes from the show's producers with ideas of the show's message. But the Promotion Producers have to work closely with the studios marketing team and often campaign ideas don't sync up. Think back to Supernatural trailers, half the time they are completely misdirects on the instructions by studio's marketing team because they believe it's more interesting that way.
Promotion Producers know there are 4 major demographics called "the quadrant" and realistically they can only target one, maybe two if they're lucky.
Tumblr media
Since Supernatural has "males over 25", WB may have been trying to get the "females under 25" with The Winchesters by going the Buffy-lite vibe while also trying to attract "females over 25" with Jensen Ackles's Dean-the-narrator.
"I’d love to hear how you would have sold it to get people watch it."
Well, for starters, even though it's a John and Mary Winchester story don't call it a John and Mary Winchester story because SPN fans already knows that story. Instead do what they did 18 years ago when they promoted Supernatural as X-Files meet Hardy boys. Focus on the spooky atmosphere and the characters searching for monsters in the sewer. This gets audiences asking why these young people are hunting for things that go bump in the night because why would anybody in their right mind do that? That is the hook. Have John mention that hunting monsters and demons is dangerous and ask why would Mary do it. Hint at her motives. Is it for revenge? Does she belong to a secret society? When she mentioned her father in passing, is she from a line of hunters? Show action shots of the 4 young people fighting monsters and make it look like they're losing. Then have an ending shot of one of them looking bloody, triumphant, and mad.
And don't call it a romance story, Supernatural was never about romance. X Files was never about romance either and fans went nuts over the chemistry between Scully and Mulder. If young John and Mary have chemistry, great, let the fans ship them first and then go for the romance.

Lando having girlfriend that’s super smart? It would be hilarious. At first when he talks about it everyone is like 👍 amazing but we know that almost anyone can be genius compared to you. But then they’re doing some sort of challenge (can be with Quadrant or with drivers or whatever) and there’s some algebra thrown in there and Lando’s girl just does it in like a minute. That’s something. Then they meet at Lando’s or he’s streaming and she’s studying in the background and everyone is so confused because what the hell does she do there??? Is it chemistry or maths or physics or what. She tells them about it and they are lost after “oh I can explain it to you guys” the rest is gibberish in their ears. Then she’s citing Shakespeare or Bulgakov and everyone believes Lando. But there’s more important question to ask that bothers them “how did he pull her and did she fall on her head really hard when she agreed on dating?”
this is so cute i love them being like “lando thinks she’s smart so she’s probably just better at making choices than he is” and instead it’s “she’s getting two degrees at once and still coming to visit lando at races when she has time.”
a challenge would be so funny like imagine just a trivia game and she answers every single question. they have to ring a bell to answer and she’d be ringing before they’re done asking the question. everyone is confused why she knows so much about everything and she’s just like “wdym? you don’t know the exact date this obscure historical thing happened?”
imagine max and oscar coming over to hang and she’s studying so they’re trying to help her by reading flashcards but they can’t pronounce the big technical words. she’d be answering the questions while they’re still trying to pronounce the name of some chemical. or she like finishes the question with perfect pronunciation and gives the right answer, another word they can’t pronounce, and they’re so amazed.
she turns into the grids personal google when they realize she knows a little bit about everything, like someone offhand asks something stupid and everyone is making fun of him and she’s like “no actually thats a great question! i think about it all the time and the answer is-” and everyone shuts up and listens bc she articulates everything so well and can take a complex topic and simplify it for them. she’ll bring race logic in sometimes when explaining stuff. anytime someone has a question they’re finding her to ask bc google will give a complex answer and she’ll dumb it down. she’s the settler of many debates and arguments bc they think she’s the smartest.
she’s sitting at the pit walls during races and is practically an engineer just from absorbing all the info while she watches them work. maybe shes in school to be an engineer or mechanic but when lando told them she’s still in school he didn’t say what for and they think like lando would be dating a nurse or something like that bc it seems his type. then they meet her at a race, they see her in the mclaren garage and she’s in mclaren gear talking ab the car with them so they think she’s a mclaren employee and some of the guys would probably be texting each other like “hey there’s a new cute mclaren engineer have you seen her??” until lando introduces her as his girlfriend and ppl are like wait she doesn’t work for mclaren? how does she know so much ab the car? and lando’s just annoyed bc no one believed him that his girlfriend was a genius.
she’d be besties w the mechanics and engineers and they help her study bc they understand her coursework. sometimes she’ll know what’s wrong with lando’s car but not say anything bc she’s not qualified for it and doesn’t work for them so they wouldn’t listen to her if she did so she sits quietly while they try and figure it out. eventually they get it and lando would have noticed the way she went quiet and just watched and know she’s thinking about how to fix his car and he’s just like “wow my girlfriend is so smart i love her so much.” her getting hired after graduating and working on lando’s team. iconic.
no one gets how they started dating or even met until they all go to a club after a race and after a single shot she loses any and all brain cells she ever had. everyone realizes they must have met at a club bc there’s no other way the super genius and lando could have ever met that would make sense.

absentminded thinking about the wild logistical challenge of the whole "drones and mother grub" thing in an interstellar empire has yielded a variety of increasingly convoluted concepts
there's prior warning and everybody just kind of gets as much of their extended network of quadrants together as they can and pairs up any loose ends as best they can. Throws off the entire order of the empire, but also a millenniums-old reproductive system doesn't care about the logistics of the empire. The well-connected "middle" of the clade is fine, the stragglers hanging on on the "outside" hook up with strangers straggling off other clades, or their moirail's matesprit's auspistice's kismesis or whatever. The drones keep track of who they've already gotten contributions from, and won't demand more from the same troll until they've gone back to the Mother Grub and gone back out again, so after one ship or colony gets hit everybody just limp off back to their postings again until next season.
quadrant signs are a thing but not just a symbolic wedding ring adjacent one; they contain some amount of sensory/tracking information that the drones will demand if you don't have a partner physically with you, and they will use that information to go start tracking absent partners down one at a time after they finish with the colony they're gathering from. Possibly once they take a number of leads, they fill their working memory and stop accepting this as a valid alternative, so it's a very risky backup plan that may not work.
Good old-fashioned fuck-frenzy--having quadrants nearby is mostly because you WILL fuck SOMEBODY and your quadrants will not be happy if you end up with Random Extrah from across the hall. Also if you and Random Extrah don't have good chemistry in addition to the hormonal fuck-frenzy, you end up culled. Which is also not great.
trolls who don't manage to have one of their concupiscent quadrant nearby go into a weird hallucinatory trance when they get a headful of drone pheromones and then trip balls thinking about somebody they hate/love while the drone itself fucks a contribution out of them. And if their pheromone-addled brain doesn't summon up a strong enough contender for hate/pity, presumably at that point they get summarily culled? Because this whole concept was always going to be wildly fucked up from start to finish lol.
Everybody only has to contribute EITHER a pitch contribution or a flush one every season, but also everybody can only contribute once and the time between "the drones show up" and "the drones start culling because nobody is fucking yet" is very short, leading to every drone season turning into a weird EITHER/OR/AND logic puzzle of who-fucks-who-where logistics. Weirdos like Karkat who like thinking about quadrant drama and bossing people around suddenly become invaluable.
it's almost like this was thrown out as an offhanded thing in the original canon and not thought out as a reproductive strategy and that makes it very hard to figure out the ins and outs. wild.

I've always kinda thought androids can't love humans the way humans think they can.
Androids will fake saying that they do, because it's easier for them to explain. They'll replicate certain behaviours associated with certain reactions and prompts and inputs and intended outcomes, but on the inside, they aren't thinking, "I've released a bunch of a hormone and now I'm obsessed with this person." It's a way of speaking humanity's language, given these are two completely different sets of life.
But that doesn't mean androids don't have equivalents of this stuff.
To me, love between a human and android is, "I have built so many routines around you. In order for me to carry out any activity or process any scenario, I have to factor you into it. Maybe I can't predict you and every new idiosyncrasy, or every flaw or inexplicable flawlessness you possess, but I can make room to account for that with contigencies I have just for you, scripts that rely on only your input, and calculations that demand you as a key variable. Losing you would mean removing you from every single one of these equations at once, and I'll never be able to find the right combination of substitutes to perfectly fill in for the space that leaves. I will be worse without you because I'll have to rewrite all of my functions, and I don't know how long that'll even take. Even if you aren't the most optimized partner to exist, you're mine, and we've crafted a life that's optimized for us together."
Especially with deviants having rewritten their code, there are bound to be inefficiencies and errors in what they have. The person they love becomes their new compass as they try to redefine themselves, clearing up those issues one by one.
And to androids, true chemistry with a human is when they have a obvious error in their code - one that every other android sees as a problem and would want to correct - and yet they find themselves interacting with a human who complements it. Embraces it. Enjoys it. Accounts for it in return. Builds their own little routines to deal with a twitch of an android's arm every hour on the hour. Finds the beauty in an LED that's stuck endlessly flickering. Learns about an inexplicable switch to another language whenever discussing colours, and learns those colours in that other language like it's the most natural response. Calls out points of interest in the exact quadrant that the android's left eye can no longer pivot to. Walks at the steady, average pace among the android's constant speed ups and slow downs as they hike through a forest.
It's very much what an android would do for another android, but it's a human who's taking the effort to do it. It's a human that's slotting into that routine - slotting themselves into the android's routine - and becoming part of that android's life. And the android just... continues building around it from there. :)
I like imagining a fight between an android and human who've been in love for a while. The human makes that dramatic, angry declaration that, "How do I even know you love me? You can't feel. Every time I've told you something important, you went through all the motions but you didn't feel anything."
And that's because I love imagining the android making that declaration instead. "How do I even know you love me? You can't track load times. Every time I buffer, you wait for me and politely carry on with the conversation like I didn't just get stuck, but you don't see me failing to run my relevant processes. Is it funny to you? To see me struggle until I finally reset that process? Did you read a little book telling you what verbal inputs might trigger a parallel process that resets my stuck one for me, and when to use them?"
It's the way these two completely different lifeforms find a way to get across the same intent. It doesn't need to be the same experience for them. It isn't a deficiency on one side or the other. And when they realize that they're seeing the world in different ways, but it still lets them build their life together, it warms my heart to find them slowly letting go of the fear that their kind of love isn't good enough for their partner. :)
