Commentary

This tablet contains one of our most complex sentences in Mycenaean Greek and is the first in the Ta Series, a list of banqueting equipment from Pylos.

o-wide - hō wide - ὡς εἶδε. o- often alternates with jo-, < *yo. This alternating initial *y- suggests that the common Greek sound change of *y > [h] is already occurring in Mycenaean Greek. This suggests a link to ὡς - a main clause interrogative, or adverb, or ὅς - a relative pronoun indicating the beginning of the tablet. wide - εἶδε (with original initial digamma) - 3rd person singular aorist of οἶδα - he saw.

pu2-ke-qi-ri - Phugegwirins. A personal name, most likely the person writing this tablet. This name also occurs in the Thebes tablets as an adjective pu2-ke-qi-ri-ne-ja. The presence of -ne- suggests that this name ends in -ins, or -ῑς in later Greek. The name itself is composed of two parts: Phuge - "he who flees" and - gegwirins - "violence, force, or toil."

o-te - hote - ὅτε - when.

wa-na-ka - wanax - "king." Related to ἄναξ, Homeric word for king and survives to some extent in Classical Greek.

te-ke - (ἔ)θηκε - 3rd person singular aorist of τίθημι. Here this means "appointed." Some people speculate that this means "buried," but seems unlikely in this context.

au-ke-wa - Augewan. Accusative singular form of Augewas, a personal name - seen in Homer as Αὐγειας and Pindar as Αἰγεάς. Object of te-ke.

da-mo-ko-ro - seems to be the title of an office to which Augewas was appointed. Augewas appears alongside other officials (ko-re-te) in a J-series tablet. da-mo = people (δῆμος) - further evidence of this being a public office. -ko-ro = associated with the ko-re-te's - potentially related to κορέννυμι - "satisfy, fulfill?" Could also be associated with κοίρανος = old Greek for king?

qe-ra-na - presumably a type of vessel - translated by Killen as "ewer." 1st declension feminine noun of unknown case - presumably a nominative of rubric, or an accusative. The form could be related to θερμός (from PIE *gwer- > qe-r-).

wa-na-se-wi-ja - wanassa (female wanax) + -i-ja adjectival suffix - "queenly." Unsure what this means. Ventris and Chadwick suggest "of the queen's set"; Killen (2024) suggests "fit for a queen." "Queenly" is the safest translation to fit the meaning without ascribing unnecessary value or assumptions about society.

qo-u-ka-ra - "cow's head". From PIE *gwou-kar-ās (genitive singular). Likely means to be depicted with a cow's head. Drinking vessels are commonly found in Mycenaean periods depicting cow's heads, such as rhyta from the Mycenae Shaft Graves of Grave Circle A and the Vapheio Cups.

ko-ki-re-ja - made of conch shell, or decorated with conch shell. e-jo adjective of material ending. The root of the adjective is likely *konkhil-, related to Classical Greek κογχή (a potentially pre-Greek word). The *-il- (-ir-) suffix seems to relate to sea creatures, such as the nautilus. Sea animals were a common theme in Mycenaean iconography, seen on the painted floor of the palace at Pylos, as well as decorating many pots, etc.

a-mo-te-wi-ja - "of the wheelwright type." This corresponds with wa-na-se-wi-ja in form. -e-w- suggests that this comes from an -eus agent noun - largely agreed to be harmoteus - wheelwright. However, harmosteus, meaning governor (ἁρμοτής), has also been suggested. harmoteus meaning wheelwright has a PIE root of *asrmn(t)-. A related word in Mycenaean is a-mo, meaning wheel - which emerges as ἅρμα (chariot) in Classical Greek. It is unlikely that this ewer belonged to or depicted a wheelwright, so there is little idea as to what this means.

ko-ro-na-we-sa - "decorated with a curved handle?." The -we-(s)sa suffix of this adjective means "decorated with" and is the feminine version of the masculine/neuter suffix -went-. This suffix is seen in Homeric Greek as -οεις- and comes from the PIE root *-wnt-ya-, which then palatalises to -wassa and analogises with masculine went- to -wessa. The root of the word is harder to discern. Classical Greek κορώνη can mean either "curved handle" or "seabird." It is more likely that this ewer has a curved handle. ko-ro-n- could also be κλον- with a dummy vowel (ko-r-). Classical Greek κλόνος can mean "throng" or "turmoil" and is often associated with the throng of warriors motif that appears on vessels at the end of the Mycenaean period. However, it appears more likely that this is describing the vessel's handle.

ku-na-ja - gunaia - womanly. This could once again refer to a picture of a woman, or a vessel fit for a woman, but both of these descriptions seem redundant when the vessel has already been referred to as wa-na-se-wi-ja.

to-qi-de-we-sa - "decorated with a spiral." to-qi-de appears to be a dative or instrumental form - torkwidei, related to Latin torqueo? This likely means spiral.
