What the fuck is wrong with me, I shouldn’t be looking at embroidery machines, i still don’t have a serger OR a dress form. 

Because I finally ordered the Simplicity patterns for Anna’s dresses (despite complaining about them before) and a dress form would be a heck of a lot more useful (for fitting the bodices/corset) than spending hundreds of dollars on a new machine, then additional money for the embroidery patterns when I can just use the applique patterns that come with the dress patterns anyway.

Goddammit.

(Complaining about lack of workspace, plus pondering all the stuff I’ll have to do for my upcoming cosplays under the cut.)

I’m not actually going to buy an embroidery machine. I need those other two things much sooner, the dress form for general things and the serger for my eventual Sailor Uranus that I SWEAR I will do. (She’s my dream cosplay. It’s going to happen, hopefully this spring.)

However, I am still an idiot, though for a completely different reason. I apparently decided today that I should do three cosplays for the con I’m going to in November. Three brand new cosplays that I will have to do from start to finish.

Guys, all my current stuff is in multiple pieces and as a result, I have ZERO cosplays to wear to the sci-fi/fantasy convention I’m attending a week and a half from now. There’s no chance of me pulling off a miracle and getting any of them done in time, I have nowhere to work on anything. Kairi’s vest is THIRTY-ONE PIECES. NOT INCLUDING THE ZIPPER AND ALL THE TRIM. The dining room table, the only table big enough for cutting/sewing in the entire house, is constantly in use by my mother. Right now, it has an in-progress jigsaw puzzle on it. Last week, it had her packing for the camping trip she and my dad went on. Etc.

And as for props? Forget about it. Constructing my keyblade back in March was a nightmare. We have two huge workbenches in my dad’s woodworking shop in the basement. Perfect place to work, right?

Wrong.

One is covered in my mom’s disorganized crafting supplies. Took me half an hour to find our X-acto knife when I was starting the keyblade. The table is maybe three by six, seven at the most. But she has her yard art, and birdhouses, and wreath-making supplies, and god knows what else, covering the entire thing. Point is, there is zero work space.

The other work bench is much bigger, say four by eight feet. But half of it is covered in MORE junk. There was barely enough room for me to fit my keyblade on there to work on it. And speaking of working on it.

The workshop that my dad NEVER uses must be immaculately clean AT ALL TIMES. This means no leaving anything out (unless it’s his stuff of course). Every last single thing I was working with, aside from the keyblade itself, had to be put away. Even if I would be using the exact same stuff the next morning. And the leaving the keyblade there was forced on him by my mother. Because she didn’t want me using glue on her dining room table. And what was I supposed to do, glue it together in the basement and then bring it upstairs to dry overnight??? Yeah, I can see NO WAY that could POSSIBLY go wrong. /s

So yeah, he yelled at me for scraps of newspaper on the floor. What else is new.

ANYWAY, back to me somehow magically making three cosplays in five months.

Two of the costumes involve applique work, something I’ve never done before. One involves a lot of leatherwork, something that I have almost zero experience in. This includes sewing a pair of moccasins, something I actually have done before, my only leatherworking experience, though in a different style. (I did Ojibwe-style moccasins in an Ojibwe crafts class in college, these will be more Plains-style with the switch-out-able bottoms.) Not to mention the prop-work: a magic staff, plus the shoulder armor(?) and hat for the Silent Magician; AND a sword, shield, bow, quiver, and arrows for Link.

There is no way in hell I’m getting all of that done.

So now the question is, what do I drop? Maybe my excitement about Anna will die down within the usual twenty-four hour period and I can just concentrate on the two that I decided on last week? Because I can’t drop the Silent Magician, I already have her wig, boots, and MOST of the fabric, plus notions and dye, for the robe. (I had to lengthen a trapeze dress pattern and didn’t allot enough fabric for the sleeves when I originally went fabric shopping back in January. GOD I hope they still have that fabric.) And I have my heart pretty set on Link, I was originally hoping to do his Gerudo Vai outfit for that con coming up in a week and a half (though I’ll be doing his snowquill outfit for the November con. I’m not an idiot). I even have a Sheikah slate! (but literally nothing else yet, haha)

Okay, so as a toddler Ben tried to eat a bee, this went exactly as you would predict it did, and so now he will hear nothign good about them ever.

Also even at like four Gwen was laughing at her cousin’s self-induced misery

Gwen, looking to take advantage of a bee festival to go from 130 facts about bees to a round 200. Also that is a lot of fucking honey stalls.

Bee lands on Omnitrix, Ben panics and turns himself into Four Arms trying to swat it. Bad Ben, no cake for you.

Ben: “I was attacked by a swarm of killer bees! Luckily I was able to fight ‘em off” Gwen: “You poor, strange boy”

They have a ‘sweetest honey’ contest

Oh gods and it’s rewarded to the queen of the hive that wins, and the queens have their own little jars next to their hives to they can be properly ribboned

Oh my gods the presenter of the prize is, herself, a queen bee. Queen Obeelia. Be still my bug-loving heart

Here we are, last day, and I have zero fucks left. Like I almost didn't wear a cosplay levels. But I put in Hong Kong and remembered why I've worn this one like ten times. SO COMFY. And the colors just look really nice together. Such a rich red. Not to mention I spent obscene amounts of money on stuff. My credit card bill this month is going to be craaaaazy. Everything I bought is super-awesome though. No regrets on anything. I'm registered for next year, so you'll get to see this again in one year's time. Maybe next year, I'l even be brave enough to post a selfie.

I have a hotel room at Detour, so I figured I could watch the masquerade on the closed circuit television channel as usual. But they're having technical problems this year, so the opening ceremonies AND the masquerade didn't get on the tv. Luckily, someone livestreamed it on their phone and had it up on Detour's Facebook page. So I got to see my friend, who's competing for the very first time, totally KICK ASS for her walk-on entry. You go girl.

Hadn't even sat down to eat breakfast and someone asked for a picture of Kairi. It's got to be the keyblade, because it can't be me. My vest is too big. I'll be taking in the waist and shortening it before I wear it again.

Oh My God

So I went through the costumes and weapons policies for Detour to make sure my keyblade isn't going to be a problem (I didn't think it would be, which is why I didn't check it until now) and Under the rules about steel weapons, which is usually about swords and stuff, they specifically say that ice skates, even with guards on, are live steel. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. Serious question though, who would WANT to walk around a convention in ice skates? Those things are so uncomfortable and it's just asking for a broken skate or a broken ankle.

All checked in, set up, and settled into my hotel room at Anime Detour. Only now am I finally eating dinner. Which I had to buy from the nearby gas station because everything else was closed.

Cosplay update. Accidentally bought too much black bias tape and no black piping, so the vest is on hold until Saturday, when I can go out and get some. Because I’m at the point where I do actually need it. My keyblade is. . .not falling apart, so I guess that’s good? There’s so much work left to do on it, hopefully I’ll be able to put in a productive weekend on it. It needs at least one more layer of foam board, then paper-mache, then paperclay, then flowers and paint and the keychain and ugh. Why did I talk myself into doing a Kingdom Hearts character again??

Shorts need to be made out of the white capris I bought at the second hand store, because apparently white shorts don’t exist in my size?? At least not there. Need to add the trim and pick up a pair of black bike shorts too. Her shoes still need paint, though now that the vest fabric is dyed, I have no excuse not to take care of it, since I can color-match now. Also, black shoelaces, if I can find them. I wonder if the original black laces from Toko’s boots will work. . .

Also, gotta make sure Toko is still wearable. I have no idea where her shorts are, I need to borrow that vest from my mom again (because apparently plain black vests aren’t a thing), and I need to check on that ponytail extension, see if that really will work. And how badly it needs to be de-tangled. . .then sew it to the hat, because my hair isn’t long enough for it. (It was when I bought it!)

And I’m going to be pulling out Hong Kong. Again. I swear, I’ve worn that costume like ten times, but I’m still not sick of it! I love it! Though now that I’ve decided to grow my hair out again, I really do need a wig. And I bought one. Tonight. We’ll see if it comes in time for next week. Why couldn’t I just have ordered it with my other two wigs two months ago???
