im doing a deep dive into old hetalia comics and i found this... so were spain and france actually married???? canonically????????? he called france his boss a little earlier in this same page but now...

If I could say one thing about Hetalia's old chapters, it would be... wild... especially those featuring France and Spain 😭😭😭😭😭

Hima once commented that their relationship is ''their relationship is actually undesirable, yet the two remain inseparable''.

I think this emphasizes a lot on how much France and Spain have been through together… including being married as you mentioned.

During this time, I saw that their personal relationship had deepened. They not only worked together more but also shared more with each other. The dialogue below is taken from here.

In Hetamyu, Spain was very worried when the French Revolution broke out, because before that both he and France were attached to the House of Bourbon. If you look at the history of the alliance between France and Spain during this period, you will see that the two were no different from getting married 😂

One thing I found interesting was that Hetamyu also canon France, Spain and South Italy as living together during the Second French Empire; which emphasized that France was the one controlling this family. He let Spain take care of South Italy closely, but behind the scenes, France was the one who managed everything.

It sounds cruel, but whether it is politically or personally, Spain was a valuable ''bride'' to France during these time.

Interestingly enough I do think Antonio's rage is also quite bad. Laughs.

So, what is Antonio's bad side?

Now I'm curious if you have one for other characters like Austria or England.

On the outside, we already know that Spain is a bubbly and sociable person. But on the very inside, Spain has many aspects that he doesn't like to show. Especially when it comes to... rage.

It would be very debatable on this topic but my view concluded that Spain is quite a judgemental person 😂 When he judges, he judges hard and this even applies to himself. I believe sometimes Spain is more honest with his feelings when he lets out his anger.

But... Spain really knew how bad he was when he got into that state (Hima even drew the ''caution keep out'' tape 😂). If that rage gets him some benefits (e.g.: showing his enemies that he is not the easy guy for them to deal with), the situation would be more convenient for his emotions. But life is more complicated. Most of his rage I think comes from possessiveness and jealousy.

So is there any reason why Spain tried to cover up his rage?

Funny how Spain loves to know that people really like him and will be very proud if they praise something like ''Oh, Spain is such a nice man to talk with'' or ''I love spending time in/with Spain''. So most of the time, he likes to keep that beautiful image. It became more evident when he joined the EU and more people started to get to know about him.

Our Spain really surfing the Internet to read how much people like him and save it.

Like it or not, people would die to have such a good impression on people like the way Spain is doing right now. It is even more enviable when Spain actually feels comfortable being that kind of person most of the time. He is like a magnet that attracts people from the beginning.

I think Spain has the behaviour of someone who finds it hard to deal with anger and frustration in a good way. He can get extremely violent when he gets angry and he really knows it. But he also deeply cares about how people think of him, it is even crazier if it is a person that he likes.

So if he still had a little bit of composure, one of the ways he does is hiding the ''not so beautiful'' part. And that attitude has had a huge impact on his personality.

I feel like many people judge Spain as a bland and shallow character. But if you read more of the manga of Hetalia (I highly recommend some of the old chapters), you will find more interesting canon about him. So... let's have ''a buono mood'' Spain to chill this post 🧊

If Francis and Antonio started dating each other, I think Gilbert... took a while to know that Francis and Antonio were in a serious relationship with each other... because even when they were friends, Francis and Antonio were always flirting and cuddling with each other so it was hard to tell if they were in a relationship or not 🤣

Honestly, I feel like Gilbert is easily cringed and a little bit worried about the way Francis and Antonio love each other. Gilbert's view on love would be quite different from Francis and Antonio's even though he is also very sweet and caring when dating 😂

Even in the AU, I still think Gilbert is very attached to the church... somehow he is a lot more prudent when it comes to love. If he starts dating someone, he is really serious and wants to be in a long-term relationship. Literally, the type of person you would see dating someone for 7-10 years 🥹

Francis and Antonio are also (kinda) religious... but they are Francis and Antonio... 😭 Their love is passionate but also full of troubles. You could see them break up tonight but then make love again (still do not forget to post a Story on Instagram) tomorrow morning 😭

Haha studying International Studies while being a Hetalian is so much fun. I actually survived many subjects thanks to Hetalia 😂

To me, international politics and history become very close and easy to understand if you are a Hetalian. I also volunteered for some diplomatic events in my country a few times and the atmosphere in those events made me think of our characters a lot.

This is a major (at least for me and my friends) that I think will give students a great self-study attitude because the basic knowledge of politics or history is assumed by teachers that you have had since high school, so they will teach you more about other more specific things. If you enjoy connecting events and thinking about different perspectives, I think you will enjoy this major.

At the same time, I also feel that foreign affairs in general allows you to meet many people that you only see in the media before. I once attended a class taught by a teacher who worked at the United Nations for a few years and he told many insightful and also very funny stories about the world situation (very Hetalia) 😭

Do you have frain headcanons?

I have been thinking for weeks that I would make a whole Frain headcanon list, but somehow this idea just stuck in my head. It seems like a compilation of some of their historical and personal relationships headcanons that I have. I hope you enjoy it <3

I like to think Spain has many exes, and France is clearly one of his, but the point is Spain keeps coming back to France... even when he is in a relationship with someone else.

Sometimes, it is not always wild s3x or a deep conversation. Maybe Spain just wants to be sitting silently on France's lap while he strokes his hair. Or Spain came to his house with a grocery bag, then made him a nice meal.

He misses France, but clearly not his manipulated and cruel side, haha. He longs for someone who understands his nature, gets his personal pace, and knows when to quietly take care of him or leave him alone. (Tragically) France is always a person like that for Spain.

Even before being a very close ally of France, Spain was canon fond of spending time with France. During the time when both he and France were ruled by the House of Bourbon, I think they spent a lot of time together and this makes Spain especially nostalgic now.

They hunted together, feasted together, and fought together. In those heady days, they ''belonged'' to each other. Nowadays, the ''Pacte de Famille'' will always be a time that Spain thinks of when he looks at the fleur-de-lis on his flag.

The not-so-funny part is France sometimes does the same when he is in a relationship with someone else. He also craved Spain. I think reminiscence is the knife ''killing'' both of them.

Both France and Spain know it is wrong to do that to their partner, but they can't stop it for centuries. Because they are both committing this sin, they can feel calm and relaxed that the other will not judge them.

They are secretly (+ wrongly) proud to be one of the most missed exes of the other.

I've always enjoyed portraying France and Spain having a complicated, conflicting and toxic codependency relationship. Plus, the way Hima describes them enjoying spending time together but not being able to trust each other really attracted me to write about them.

To talk about France in relation to Spain, I always found him to be a sweet but also very scheming person. He can be all romantic with Spain today but tomorrow… well. Perhaps the only thing France is honest with Spain is how hot he finds Spain lol.

To be honest, I think every character of Hetalia has a terrible side since day one 😂 I just like sharing about France's dark side because I feel quite comfortable with his fansite on Tumblr.

I mainly write Frain fanfics on AO3 so after a few Frain fanfics I've written, I’ve discovered that I always enjoy writing about France’s rage, whether from a third-person viewpoint or through Spain’s perspective.

For example, the "everything has to go my way" attitude of France intimidates even those closest to him. However, he's very skilful at masking it with an openness and sweetness that only a charismatic person can achieve. That makes those close to him often the ones truly receiving France's angry language or terrible coldness. You can see these traits of France more in old Hetalia (especially manga) and also Hetamyu.

As of now, I'm still writing an Omegaverse fanfic where Francis and Antonio get married (yes, Antonio is pregnant in that); and the more chapters I go through the more I think about the caring/ruthlessness of Francis in his relationship with Antonio.

It is also funny that somehow a lot of the fanfics I like about France are fanfics where France is the antagonist.

Hi. I'm not sure you knew, but France and Spain were kinda together too when they were just Roman procinces, during the so called, Imperium Galliarum, after Gallia (France) " conquered" Hispania for 14 years. It also included Britania. (I used " " because it doesn't seem Hispanic people minded much about it, lol). Nauhghty bratty kids, they were. I always imagined Francis kinda going: "Hey, we should get together, don't you think?" And Antonio being his oblivious self and thinking there was nothing wrong with joining his friend being like "mmm ok, why not?" And Rome in the background damning the haughty spoiled rotten brat Francis is.

so earlier this morning i listened to a podcast and it talked about the perfume tradition in France. Apparently there's this kind of perfume which "scent to be so delicious that people would want to eat it", and the inspiration is not drawn from flowers, but the scent of "french childhood breakfast drinking hot chocolate"

the "scent being delicious" part sounds like good fanfic material 🥴 but then the inspiration popped up and now i just think it's sweet and wholesome

Lately, I've been haunted by a Vietnamese song lyric in which at the beginning, a girl says in the rhythm of the song, "You said you love me? It's not worth it… Live for yourself; consider it as me begging you'' in a very leisurely and willing-to-let-go voice.

But for some reason, I keep thinking that the lyrics contradict the song's message, that this is the only way Spain can accept to overcome his complicated personal thoughts with France.

Although, I think the word "love" here is different from what we as human imagine. We know they are both personifications. But sometimes I think they have looked at each other a few times and just said the word. They have been together for a long time, grasped each other in some of the most thorny emotional aspects… and also not understood each other at all.

They both have tons of hard feelings for each other, and the deeper they get, the more they will destroy each other. I think this becomes even more obvious during the time they were married and living together.

We even have a canon from Hima that ''their relationship is actually undesirable, yet the two remain inseparable.''.

This toxic dependence on each other makes them behave more toxically when they are together. Spain always wants France's preferential attention/treatment, and France really needs someone who is willing to let him pour out his extreme emotions/behaviors.

It's not until they're ready to let go of those things that their relationship can change. And oh, how difficult this was!

Let say... I've spent years practising writing 🔞 scenes and writing from France/Francis' POV has helped me a lot, lol. To me, he's truly one of the most sexually adventurous people in Hetalia. This is a slightly… daring passage in my long ABO fanfic, where Francis begins to gain Antonio's obedience in their marriage. Here's the English translation of that excerpt: ‘’Antoine seemed to have been my favourite calf from the start. A calf that I secretly thought would be marked with my favourite number and have a bell around his neck and a bow on his tail''

I think the above paragraph alone captures some of the wildest parts of my brain, lmaooo 😭😭😭 But I'm really into MPREG so yeah...

🐇 Do you write for yourself, for others, or both?

After getting back into fanfic writing (I stopped writing quite a few years ago because I was so busy… and had writer's block), I felt like I wanted to write for myself more. There were so many ideas and words that I wanted to use so I started writing fanfic again. I think this "I write for myself" mindset helped me have more stamina to write because if I focused too much on things like kudos or comments, I would get discouraged really quickly and tbh I don't want that to happen to me.

🦈 Which character is the toughest to write?

So far, definitely England/Arthur, haha 🤡💥 I tried writing a Frain + EngSpa fanfic before, and everything went very smoothly at first. But when it came to the part where I had to write England/Arthur's feelings, my hand could barely write a complete paragraph 😭 I think this might be because I've never delved deeply into the psychology of a character as "cold on the outside, warm on the inside" as him before, so that's why I'm so confused with his mood and thought 🥹 Hopefully, in the future, he and I can sit down and get to know each other more in a teashop 🫣

💭 What inspires you and your writing?

I think from everything in my l-… Oh but wait, my life is filled with things like world history and international politics 🤡 At this point, I feel like I'll try reading almost anything to get an idea 😭 International relations analysis, French poetry, the National Center for Biotechnology Information research on childbirth, etc... if I can absorb something, I'll ''take it'' with me 🤡

💌 Is there a favorite trope you like to write?

There is a trope that I've always wanted to write, but haven't been able to write yet: Forbidden love: AU Catholic clergy... that the Cardinal had a romantic relationship with another man. (I would be happy if I could write about a Cardinal). I'm currently struggling with a long fanfic of mine so I don't dare to develop another multi-chapter fanfic 😭😭😭 And really this is a plot that needs a lot of research before writing and I don't know where to start, so right now it is still ''idea stuck in Ellavei's head for many years'' 💥

I often use historical paintings as a reference for the clothes I want to see. Personally, I like to browse the Museo Nacional del Prado because I like to research historical Spanish clothes (the search bar is the magnifying glass at the top). The Louvre is also a great place to research. The paintings or objects are scanned in excellent quality.

If there is a book that is really easy to understand about the history of fashion, I highly recommend ''The Concise History of Costume and Fashion'' by James Laver - he is one of the leading scholars in this field. Everything is presented straightforwardly so you can grasp it quickly. Feel free to message me if you need the PDF.
