Must see things on DS9 while on shore leave!
Deep Space 9, simultaneously the most important military outpost in the Alpha Quadrant and the most popular shopping mall this side of Freecloud, has rapidly become a Shore Leave destination to rival Risa. This is your guide to making the most of your leave!
The Promenade
The hub of the station is the Promenade where you can view the station’s many stores. You’ve got gift shops, a tailors to dress up for a night out, the Jumja stick stand, Bat'leth’s R Us and the bowling alley. As far as food or drinks, you’ve travelled around the quadrant in seconds! Choose from Bajoran, Bolian, Klingon, Vulcan, the replimat, and of course Quark’s which we will come back to soon.
Can’t I just replicate all of this, you ask? Sure but cosplaying ancient capitalism is a hobby so many Federation citizens enjoy these days. Just remember to bring some currency and brush up on the terms you need to “haggle” and “gamble” before you go so you don’t look like an “easy mark” (Have you got advice on how to spend currency? Leave a comment!). If you’re looking for handmade “unreplicated” items, however, get your purchase externally verified before parting with your chosen medium of exchange.
If you’re not someone into aesthetic scarcity, there’s more to do! Opposite Quark’s is the Bajoran temple where you can take in a slice of Bajoran culture. After all, they’ll soon be a Federation member! If your captain has been savvy in scheduling your visit, you may even get a chance to see the Gratitude Festival. Finally, fans of the first Ferengi in Starfleet may want to find a spot opposite Quark’s and dangle their feet over the edge. Enjoy the ambience of Commander Nog’s favourite spot before security moves you along.
Watching the Wormhole
You may be wondering why we didn’t point out the best spot to see the wormhole on the promenade. Well, that’s because the best spot isn’t on the promenade. Every insider knows to head to a vacant upper pylon (our favourite is number 2). Up there you’ll get a beautiful view of what the Bajorans call the “Celestial Temple”. Maybe you’ll have a religious awakening?
Don’t forget, they say that if you see the wormhole open, you get to make a wish. I guess the dockmaster at DS9 must be a very lucky person by now.
Ops
The nerve centre of DS9 is off duty to casual visitors (such as young ensigns on shore leave) but since the war ended tours have been scheduled twice a day. Visitors will be shown around Ops by a member of the crew and told stories about the events that happened there. You will also get to see inside the station commander’s office including Sisko’s famous baseball. If you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of Colonel Kira! The wait list is very long so book ahead.
Note that holo imagers are not permitted in Ops and the tour may be cancelled at short notice in the event of an emergency situation. For a more in-depth experience, see the “Ops: Battle Stations!” holosuite programme in Quark’s which recreates various dramatic battles from the station’s history.
Quark’s
This isn’t just any Quark’s, it’s the original Quark’s! A bar so good it’s spread across the quadrant like Caitan nip. It’s got drinks, live music, auctions, a Dabo wheel (with some very good-looking Dabo girls and guys to help you part with your currency) and some amazing holosuites (with none of the content filters recently applied to Starfleet Holodecks). This is also the spot where Captain Sisko punched Q!
Those looking for something special should ask after Quark’s private stock. It comes at a premium, but who can turn down some Aldebaran whiskey? Share a glass with Morn who is renowned for regaling fellow patrons with war tales. Meanwhile, Ensigns who have studied under Professor O’Brien at Starfleet Academy might also be looking out for his famous dart board. It’s located just to the left of the bar and you can try it out yourself! See if you can beat O’Brien and Doctor Bashir’s high scores!
Speaking of O’Biren and Bashir, check out Vic’s Lounge in the holosuites. This recreation of an old Earth club was so popular among the crew of DS9 that Bashir kept it running 26 hours a day. The eponymous Vic himself, the proprietor, is a sentient hologram much like Voyager’s EMH. So speak freely and enjoy the vibe of old Earth.
Don’t forget to stop in the gift shop on your way out!
The Tribble Experience
Something away from the promenade is a Tribble cafe, opened in a cargo bay after the crew of the Defiant brought back the one-extinct Tribble from the 23rd century. Realising they could stop its spread by ensuring they were away from any food supply they managed to relocate the tribbles away from the promenade to a cargo bay.
Lacking a better idea, they opened an “experience” where you get to pet, play with and roll around a cargo bay with several hundred tribbles. Their cute purrs will calm even the most nervous disposition!
Please note they have a strict no-food policy for all visitors. Anyone inadvertently bringing food into the Tribble Experience will be held legally liable for all the Tribble offspring that result as well as any containment or cleanup costs the station incurs.
Dukat’s Ghost
Several years back, the crew on DS9 triggered a Cardassian self-defense mechanism built into the main computer designed to suppress a Bajoran uprising. While the station locked down and attempted to kill its now Cardassian-free inhabitants messages of the old prefect, Gul Dukat (yes, that Dukat), played on monitors across the station.
After the program was purged, a bug remained in the system. Head down to level 32, section H. Stand outside the cargo bay there and turn right. Walk to the next junction then left, right then straight on for 12 meters. On your left you’ll see a flickering display screen. At 12 minutes past the hour, every hour, an automated message from Dukat to his Bajoran workers will play. However, the audio generation gets spliced with the general communication system of the station so you’ll get a unique presentation from Dukat. We stayed for 3 hours and heard these;
“Bajoran Workers, I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it.”
“Bajoran Workers, it is said that in the right hands the Mercury Stone has the power to cleanse the land of evil and bring prosperity to all.”
“Bajoran Workers, come to Quark’s, Quark’s is fun, come right now, don’t walk, run!”
Enjoy your stay on DS9 and remember to leave a review on FourQuad.

Writer Q&A Tag Game
Thanks again to @digital-chance for the tag! You can find their original post here!
1)What motivates you to write?
My own ego (I kid...sorta).
I love creating worlds and giving life to the various voices inside my head. I love teasing out ideas and constructing (too) intricate plots and scenarios. Writing is my escape from the daily grind (for good and bad) and my main outlet for expression. I honestly wouldn't be me without my writing.
2) A line/short snippet of your writing that you are most proud/happy of. If not maybe share a line of someone else's work you love (just please credit them)
I'll share something from a short story currently on ice until I get around to editing it. It's tentatively called "Cosmic Self-Serve"
Unfathomable eldritch horrors weren’t on my Tuesday night bingo card but it takes all types to keep a gas station in the black. I took another pack of gum from the rack and popped a stick in my mouth, praying for brain freeze. Cool mint took over my senses and I felt like a person again. Gary won’t be happy with my lack of respect for “stock integrity” but that’s why our corporate gods gave us shrink. Also Gary’s an asshole so screw Gary.
3) Which OC makes you smile every time you think/talk about them and what are they like?
I'm going to have to give this to September from my Festival Project WIP. He's such a mess of a character despite his best efforts to keep it together. He has a pretty lengthy backstory for "reasons that drift a smidge into spoiler territory." On the surface, he's calm and collected and can weather any storm with clear head, but that comes from a long history of battling demons (both real and internal). He currently puts these talents towards being the Editor in Chief at his newspaper office.
4) What process of writing do you enjoy the most?
The initial brainstorming and outlining stage. I love plotting out stories free from the expectation of making the words sound pretty. I do still enjoy making the words pretty but sometimes I stall getting too caught up in that.
5) What part of writing do you think you are the best at? (Yes stroke your own ego it's okay)
The dialogue, though I will be the first to admit that I can get carried away with it. I also credit myself as a very meticulous plotter, in the actual plot and with character backstories. I've been told that my shorter stories tend to subvert expectation and go in unexpected places (but this too has its pitfalls as my earlier writing has been labelled as confusing by certain peers in writing workshops).
Even when I'm trying to stroke my ego, I keep offering caveats.
6) What is something in the writeblr community is most enjoyable?
Honestly, how supportive everyone is! We're always trying to build each other up and the discussions I see on my feed where people excitedly talk about their stories and OCs remind me why writing is so much fun. And the games, of course. My god, these games! I love them!
7) A writing tool/device you use that helps you with writing? (It could be speech to text, a writing program etc)
I recently took the plunge and bought Scrivener and I'm liking it so far. It's a bit of a learning curve with all the features you can play with, but I love how you can organize stories and bookmark things within each text section for referencing. Best of all, (and as far as I'm aware) you only have to pay once for it (unlike some other subscription based programs). With that being said, I do love Microsoft Word for smaller projects and its backup feature.
I also use a timer on my computer (I have Windows so there's a clock app that you can adjust). On days that I'm really struggling to motivate myself, dividing my time into smaller increments can get me through the slog.
8) A piece of worldbuilding that you like in your own story? (It could be the magic system, a particular place in the story, a law etc)
Egad, what a broad question! I have to think about that for a second...
There's a unique Protestant-inspired church branch within Hollow Grove that's known as the Edelhaus Coalition Church. It's also uniquely American, whose foundation is the old Puritan work ethic that emphasizes hard work as a core tenet that guarantees a path to heaven.
Where it diverges is its belief in The Founder and the concept of The Faithful. The Faithful are the true believers that have gained immense favor with God through their hard work and aptitude. As evidence of his favor, he gives The Faithful powers over nature. The Founder (who many believe was the original historical founder of the town, Goodwin Hollow) was the first Faithful and every Festival of Shadows, the evidence of his will is seen in the resurrection of the recently deceased every festival year. This holiday is celebrated by all in the Edelhaus Coalition church for this reason. It's also why many acolytes within the church opt for natural burial for a chance to walk the earth again.
There's more to it but in the spirit of brevity, that's all I'll say for now.
9) What piece of advice would you say to encourage others to write if they are having a rough patch?
I'll say it again, write what you love. There's no point in writing something you don't.
I also want to emphasize the importance of breaks. Sometimes if the words aren't flowing (or there's just so much going in your life), never feel ashamed of putting the pen down and coming back to a story later. The time away can offer fresh perspective. It can divert your attention to something else that you're equally passionate about. I sometimes like to procrastinate on one story with another. If I can't write at all, sometimes reading or watching something can inspire you.
10) Tag some people whose works you love/have been your biggest supporters
I'm truly inspired by reading the snippets of stories from @digital-chance (that's two mentions now!) @rmgrey-author @palebdot @tabswrites @writingbyricochet and @fatexweaver. I appreciate the support and interactions I've had with @vintagecivet @macabremoons @friendlyshaped @aestatismors @leisoree @words-after-midnight @axl-ul @nai-nty-8 and @nonsenseramble. Seriously, you all rock and I appreciate all of you!
I'm going to go ahead and gently tag all these beautiful folks listed above as well as some newer mutuals who I hope to get to know more @girlfromthecrypt @elhuei @isherwoodj @poemsbymo @robin-writes-a-lot and anyone who would like to participate!

Kate Kenzie Christmas Q&A
In the run up to Christmas, I am delighted to be hosting a series of interviews with the authors of some of my favourite seasonal books. Kicking off the festivities is Kate Kenzie, whose debut novel A Blend of Magic was released earlier this year. First things first Kate, what are we having for Christmas breakfast? Does chocolate orange count as breakfast? We always have one in our stockings and…

Destiny Bond Interview
Destiny Bond is a hardcore band from Denver, Colorado. They enjoy a good craft beer, the occasional CBD gummy, wearing North Face puffy vests over collared shirts, and watching the Colorado Rockies lose. Wait, I'm thinking of my uncle Eric. Destiny Bond probably also likes those things as well. So it sort of works out.
We asked them some annoying questions and they answered them! Read below!
Q: Who is Destiny Bond?
A: Destiny Bond is the sexy daughter of James Bond who uses seduction to accomplish her missions.
Q: Why is Destiny Bond?
A: Because it simply must be.
How is Destiny Bond?
A: Pretty good! You?
Q: For the Dreyfest peeps who don’t know, where are y’all from and how’d you all meet?
A: We are Cloe, Adam, Rio, Emily and Amos. We all met through playing DIY music in the Rocky Mountain Region.
Q: I think three of you played the very second Dreyfest, in different iterations! There are a lot of funny photos from that fest, I'll have to remember to bring them to show you. Any moments from that fest stick out in your memory?
A: I remember playing in my old band justinedrugs at that festival and having the best reaction we had had anywhere up to that point. It was awesome! I also played the first Dreyfest with my old band Weather-Control from Cody, Wyoming and with my solo project Oxen Free. -Amos
The first Dreyfest I attended was while my band stoic. was on tour with Adam’s band Caged Bird Songs. There was only room on the fest for CBS, so I just got to watch bands that time. stoic. did return to Dreyfest a few years later, we played under a basketball hoop and it was a slam dunk - Cloe
Q: Favorite city/cities to play in? I've always been a fan of Milwaukee shows myself!
A: Some of my favorites are Cleveland, Columbus, and Minneapolis. -Amos
My recent favorites are NYC, Columbus, and Springfield, IL! I may be biased but Denver is an all time favorite for me still -Cloe
Q: The band has a vitality and energy about them live and on the record - where do you source that energy (rage?) from?
A: The rage is one of the wolves that lives inside me….but honestly it is sourced from every day frustrations living as a transwoman in today’s climate, seeing the marginalized people in my community being trodden upon, and the everyday difficulties of seeing the changes I want to make personally and in the world, but struggling to find motivation for such big undertakings. I want my voice in this band to echo the part of your mind telling you to keep going, to find solutions, and to find them with and in your community in ways that bring others up with you. I want that rage to be turned into a productive and proactive force, rather than adding more negativity to already bad situations. - Cloe
Q: If Destiny Bond were a cover band for a day, who would they want to cover for a set?
A: I would like to do a two song Egg Hunt cover set -Amos
The Distillers, covering all three albums - Cloe
Q: Hardcore seems to have been making a comeback - any other hardcore bands you’d recommend?
A: Everyone reading should check out Candy Apple, SPINE, Punitive Damage, Yambag, Bootcamp, Mexican Coke and Skinman - Amos
What Amos said, plus G.O.O.N., Concealed Blade, Jivebomb, Violencia, and Stress Positions - Cloe
Q: If you were given a million dollars, but it had to be spent in ways to directly improve the Denver music scene, what would you spend the money on?
A: Purchase a space to run all ages shows, community events, and affordable practice spaces in perpetuity that could survive any changes that may take place in the city.
Fuck/Marry/Kill- Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter
Why pit three bad bitches against each other?! Okay, I guess fuck Chappell Roan, marry Charli (the supreme discography of the 3), and very regretfully kill Sabrina, like in the style of the stock image with that little kid crying holding a gun - Cloe
Fuck/Marry/Kill- the Denver omelet, Colorado Style Green Chili, Colorado style pizza
I don’t know what Colorado style pizza is so you can kill that, marry the chili, fuck the omelette - Amos
Fuck/Marry/Kill- Coors, Fat Tire, Dale's Pale Ale
Marry Coors, Fuck Fat Tire, Kill Dale’s - Amos
Q: Favorite 90s movie to cry to?
A: Dumb and Dumber - Amos
The Incredibly True Adventure of 2 Girls in Love - Cloe
Q: Favorite 90s album to mosh to?
A: Satisfaction is the Death of Desire by Hatebreed - Amos
Life. Love. Regret by Unbroken - Cloe
Q: Favorite 90s video game to lose to?
A: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater - Amos
Diddy Kong Racing - Cloe
Q: Favorite 90s TV show to laugh at?
A: All That - Amos
The Nanny - Cloe
Q: Any gnarly tour stories or experiences with crashing at houses, house shows, car stuff?
A: We got caught in a really scary snowstorm outside of Rock Springs during a night drive and had to stop and stay in a hotel and then the next day we blew a tire and had to change it and put on a spare in -11 degrees. We got it fixed and made it to the show though! -Amos
I’ll just add that immediately after that harrowing experience, we played a show in a garage with the garage door open in 20° weather in SLC. I played in a hoodie, hat, and gloves, but the show was incredible with kids literally hanging off the ceiling. - Cloe
Q: What are Destiny Bond’s plans for the future? Signing a lifetime contract to be the spokespeople for an up and coming VPN service based out of Singapore that I can get you on the ground floor of no later than the end of this fiscal quarter?
A: Nah, we won’t be doing all that but we are planning on playing a show in India before the end of the year at the largest cultural festival in Asia. - Amos
Whoa idk Amos, this VPN sounds pretty promising, and “Destiny Bond - Be My Virtual Private Network” has a nice ring to it. Can I access Netflix in other countries with it? - Cloe
Q: What can we expect for Sunday’s set on August 11th at Craft Local at 8:30 PM MST 2024
A: Uncompromising high octane punk rock fury - Amos
That, and probably one of us hurting ourselves from jumping - Cloe
Catch Destiny Bond at Craft Local on Sunday, at 9 PM.

so i'm in a Christmasy mood and wanted to just ramble about Christmas, so i found some ask games, picked my favourite questions, and answered them below, just for some festive fun! 😊🎄🤶
Favourite Christmas film? -- i think it's a tie between White Christmas and National Lampoon's Cmas Vacation
Favourite Christmas song? -- oooh i've got WAY too many favourites!!! it also depends a lot on who's singing it. i can tell you my LEAST favourite which is Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Cmas Is You", god how i loathe that song 🤮
Real tree, or artifical? -- a real tree, every year!! we've even started taking them from our own backyard, literally! (there's a forest on my mom's property.)
Favourite gift you've ever gotten? -- my Tamagotchi, back in the 90s when they were a big thing!! i still remember that moment! i had wanted one so bad, i opened it up immediately and ignored the rest lol
Do you have Christmas dinner? -- yes! every year we do the traditional north american style of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, veggies, etc.. Typically on the 25th.
Favourite food or treat? -- MINT CHOCOLATE EVERYTHING
Do you like Eggnog? -- yes! but only in small, infrequent doses. like not every day, and only half a cup at a time
Do you have any Christmas family traditions? -- not anything special or unusual, i don't think? we always open presents on Cmas Day, not Eve. and we always do stockings first. stockings are for smaller gifts and chocolate, maybe a clementine or two lol
Favorite Christmas tradition? -- decorating!!! and honestly, the variety of desserts/treats i get to indulge in 😋
Have you ever gone on a tropical or ski vacation during the Holidays? -- i could never do tropical. i need snow, i love snow, too much!! and well i hate skiing so that's also a no, lol. but i would be open to going to a winter chalet in general, and doing other stuff like snowshoeing, skating, sledding.
Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? -- every year! born and raised in Ontario, Canada, up far north enough that we get lots of snow, and green christmases are extremely rare. so having no snow is very weird and depressing to me. thankfully we have a blanket of white for this year! 💖⛄
Your favourite thing about the holidays? -- everything about it, to me, is so beautiful. the music, the decorations, the tree, the snow, the lights, everything! it gives me such warm fuzzy feelings. 😊💕
more christmas Q&A below the cut!
Do you get excited for Christmas? -- VERY much so, i'm well known amongst family and friends for how much i love it 😁
What do you want for Christmas? -- my big ask this year was for $$ and gift cards towards an e-reader (specifically for e-books)
Do you make a list of what you’d like when people ask? -- yes; my immediate family and i run on 98% wishlists and 2% "i once heard you say you like this". i need to both give and receive wishlists because i like both giving and receiving exactly what is wanted. (surprises are nice too! sometimes lol)
Do like wrapping presents? Or are you a put it in a gift bag person? -- i LOVE wrapping presents!!!, and i will only use a gift bag if it's much easier than wrapping
Did you snoop for presents when you were a kid? -- honestly, never! but i did always feel my stocking to "see" what was inside. i still do that today lol
Is your tree topper an angel or a star? -- an angel
Do you have a favourite Christmas book from your childhood? -- YES, i still have my "I, Spy" Christmas book. i look through it every year, the pictures are amazing!!!
The song that instantly puts you in the Holiday spirit? -- Run Run Rudolph, or Here We Come A-Caroling
Is there a Christmas song that makes you emotional? -- uhhh, most of them, lmao. in a happy, it's-such-beautiful-music-i'm-literally-moved-to-tears kind of way. Silent Night is the easiet way to get me teary lol
Do you go to church at Christmas? -- yes, on the 24th, despite being atheist, because i was raised Christian and my family still is. and honestly, i still love the songs and hearing the choir sing them, so it's ok
What do you like to do on Christmas Eve? -- it depends on the weather and which aunts/uncles/cousins are available; sometimes we do finger foods & drinks w/family, sometimes we just sit at home and watch Cmas movies!
When do you wake up on Christmas morning? -- in recent years, our "timeline" has gotten more relaxed, so my mom let's me sleep in lol. but i try to be up by the time she comes back from church service (11:30).
What do you like to do on Christmas Day? -- sleep in, wait for my siblings & their partners to show up, do gifts together, lounge around, then we have family over for our big turkey dinner!
What do you like to do on Boxing Day? -- nothing lol! i am NOT a Boxing Day shopper, not in-person anyways. (might look for some tech deals online this year.) we typically sit around, read books, watch movies, eat leftovers, be VERY lazy 😁
thanks for reading this far!! i hope this has you thinking about your own Christmas traditions and such, and gets you into a festive mood!
((i took questions from these ask games: 1 2 3 4 ))
#christmas#R&Rpersonal#long post#full disclaimer: i am ABLE to enjoy christmas#because i have a very good relationship with my immediate and extended family#so i never have to stress about the family visiting aspect#for which i am very grateful#my heart goes out to anyone and everyone who has shitty family [members] they have to deal with#who make their holidays stressful and horrible#i think about you guys and i hope you find other ways to enjoy this time of year <3

Some miscellaneous self care things that I don't usually see in these posts!
So since winter's coming and I know that, however beautiful these seasons may be, a lot of people struggle with seasonal depression or just general depression in these months. So here are some things I like to do to prepare while I'm still feeling good, and these are also just good things to do in general as well.
Wash all your plushies/stuffed animals. Especially if you sleep with them, these guys can get seriously dirty. I like to use the "fragile" setting on my washing machine so they're still nice and soft.
Restock all hygiene products, because I know I probably won't have the time or energy to replace them. This includes shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, toothbrushes or electric toothbrush heads, toothpaste, any other skincare products you might use, pads and tampons, razors, and just anything you think you might need. Don't hoard stuff, but make sure everything's up to date.
For school, I like to get a head start on any long-term projects that I might have early in the year, when I still have motivation. Some of my teachers have extra credit points that you can use to "buy back" a 100 on a homework assignment, and I've been working hard to get those because I know I may not be able to finish my homework later in the year.
I like to stock up on my bedroom snack stash. My mom's not real big on snacks, and I'm not supposed to eat in my room, so whenever I'm out and about I like to snag some candy or other treats. Right now I have a lot of Halloween themed candy and treats. Seasonal snacks are awesome, and I also like to have some backup safe foods
Humans thrive off of variety! Change your phone and laptop background (I prefer either fandom stuff or seasonal stuff,) rearrange or redecorate your bedroom, maybe even throw up some festive decorations for whatever holiday is closest.
Clean your headphones!!! Dirty headphones can lead to pimples in ears, which hurt and are super annoying (I have one rn ;-;) and can just make you feel gross in general. It can also decrease sound quality. There's loads of guides online; I usually just use q tips.
Wipe down your phone, too! Not only can screen crust be annoying, but all the gunk from regular phone use builds up, and can get on your face and cause breakouts, or it can be covered in germs since we use it all the time. I clean mine about once every couple weeks.
If you have a show or book you've been wanting to start, start it! I've found it's way easier to keep watching something that you've been meaning to watch if you've already started.
I recently downloaded the extensions OceanHero and Ecosia, and I love them. With OceanHero, you can help remove plastic from the ocean with every search you do and tab you open, and Ecosia plants trees for every search you do.
Feel free to add more, and I hope everyone has a happy, healthy, and safe season.
